2016 IAA Officers President 1st Vice President 2nd Vice President Secretary Treasurer

John Finke Kevin Swaim Cody Sankey Kelly Carrico Les Carmichael

President’s Message John Finke

Greetings! By now, most Indiana Angus breeders and friends know me by this simple word “Greetings” I have used in many eblasts. Now, my first message as your state president, I again bring you greetings, this time with much humbleness and thanks. When my life switched gears after cancer, I had no thoughts of ever leading this great association, following the footsteps of some pretty incredible people. I am truly honored....thank you for your support and I ask for your continued support and encouragement. As we tackle 2016 opportunities and challenges, it makes me smile to see those that have stepped up to volunteer or accept my invitation to be on one of the state committees. A few had to decline my invitation and each one could have been an asset, but we all have life priorities and I understand that. But, hopefully you have seen the list by now....our committees are filled with dedicated Angus members, some known to most of you and purposefully, NEW names which offers NEW ideas to our association. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you to those on the committees! 12 | Indiana Angus News

As NicKatie Farms hasn’t tried to tackle the show ring, I have noticed the show aspect and the junior aspect have been mainstays of IAA and they certainly have attained high status in our association from OUTSTANDING leadership. Those actively involved in the lives and promotion of our Indiana juniors have proven over and over again how talented our young members can be....thank-you to the adults that have been tremendous role models for our youth! I didn’t change a thing in those categories except to ask the chairmen to include at least one new committee member in 2016. In the past, I got to know many of you through membership collection duties. The Innis family and their committee are simply outstanding replacements to accomplish new goals and instill new ideas for IAA members! January was a challenge for the communications committee, but they SUCCESSFULLY hired a temporary (at this point) replacement for Lou Ooley as editor of Indiana Angus communications, We welcome John Carter to our Angus family and because of his tremendous efforts, you are able to read this issue! The committee all chipped in to help, but special thanks to Lou Ooley for her unending support to John Carter and the committee when asked. As I look forward to 2016, I look for help from the whole membership and committees members so we get the most bang for your membership dollars. I have big shoes to fill and tough acts to follow. Indiana will host the American Angus Association meeting in November! We want to show the world what Indiana has to offer! I close with a simple thank-you again for supporting me.....contact me anytime with ideas, advice or just to chat.....let’s make 2016 a rewarding and fun year! John Finke

Junior Jabber Hunter Grace Royer

Hello Juniors, Here’s to a great 2016 and I hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of calving season. First, I would like to remind everyone to check for upcoming shows and events deadlines. We don’t want any juniors to be left out of an event they would like to attend. Secondly, We can always count on our Angus juniors to represent Indiana Angus strong throughout the Angus industry as was evident in Denver this year. I would like to congratulate all our juniors that exhibited at the National Western Stock Show recently. Way to go! I would like to send a very special CONGRATULATIONS out to Indiana junior, Leslie Rogers for winning Grand Champion Heifer in both the Jr. and Open Angus shows this year at the NWSS in Denver. What a way to end your junior career! A huge feat that I know we all would love to accomplish during our junior careers. What a role model you are to all us juniors! Good luck to everyone at the upcoming IJBCA sanctioned shows this spring. I hope to see you all at some of the shows. And lastly, “Never give up on what you really want to do. The person with big dreams is more powerful than the one with all the facts.” - Albert Einstein If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me at RoyerGirlsCattleCompany@yahoo.com Take a smile wherever you go, Sincerely, Hunter Grace Royer

A Note From The Editor John E.K. Carter

Hello! I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is John Carter, and I am the editor of this February 2016 issue of The Indiana Angus News. I live with my wife, Chelce, and our cat, Emmy, on my family’s farm between Muncie and Alexandria, Indiana, where my family raises Hereford cattle, Horned Dorset and Border Leicester sheep, and Welsh Cob horses. I am a 2013 graduate of Ball State University with a Bachelor of Arts in English— Creative Writing and a Minor in Professional Writing. My creative work is primarily poetry and creative nonfiction, and focuses on issues of agriculture and rural life. My goal in writing about these topics to narrow the gap between the people producing food and the people consuming it. I also work in literary editing and layout design, and I co-manage a small creative nonfiction journal. I just want to say thank you to everyone who helped me fill the big shoes here at The Indiana Angus News, particularly John Finke and Lou Ooley. I am very excited to use my interests and skillset in agriculture, literary editing, and layout design to work with The Indiana Angus News. More information about me and examples of my work can be found at my website: jekcarter.com.

‘ Ah, but then one night in some empty room where no curtains ever hung Like a miracle some golden words rolled off of someones tongue. After years of being nothing they are all looking right at you. And for a while you will go in style on Sixteenth Avenue.” (16th Avenue by Thom Schuyler) Agricultural production and song writing do not have much in common, but there are similarities. The beef and grain that we have produced in the last few years were extremely valuable compared with the prices that we have been accustomed to receiving. They were like those golden words that bring great rewards. Many improvements have become affordable during this time period. Farm equipment manufacturers sold a lot of iron during the years when corn and beans were flying high. The return to “normal” prices has caused equipment sales to fall so drastically that many manufacturing workers have been laid off and even some plant consolidation (closing) has occurred. The trailer loads of field tile and the resulting drainage investments have positioned many operations to be much more productive for years. New equipment with increased operating efficiencies will allow some reduction in production costs. The consolidation in the seed and crop chemical production manufacturing business and the increasing need to use anti-fungal products will prevent cost reduction. The increasing resistance to Roundup type herbicides will change the input mix in grain Februaray 2016 | 17

production and continue the upward pressure on production costs. The cattle markets in 2015 have sadly probably been a once in a lifetime glimpse of what “going in style” could be like. Our good times did not last as long as those of the grain producers. Economists say that the cure for high prices is high prices. The cure at the other end of the scale is that the cure for low prices is low prices. Many heifers have been diverted from the feedlots to the breeding pastures. Our calf numbers for 2016 will be higher, but by how much? How did cattle producers use the increased income from 2015 prices? I hope that more safe, convenient working facilities have been installed. Tub grinders and bale processors can reduce feed costs and increase efficiency. Better fences and more reliable waterers or other water system improvements produce benefits for years. High cow prices should have allowed more troublesome cows to win a one-way ticket to get up close and personal with sesame seed buns. Bull buyers decided to buy the bulls that they wanted instead of settling for what they thought that they could afford. Those better bulls should leave improved cowherds that will make life better for those remaining or expanding in the cow/calf segment of the industry. The late Pat Goggins, who published the Western Ag Reporter, always advised his readers to lay back some cash in the good times to help farming operations survive the inevitable bad market times. “Producers shouldn’t wait until economic conditions force them to make adjustments before they consider changes in their operations.” according to Wells Fargo’s chief agricultural economist. “Everybody has three or four things that they know that should do better.” Mike Swanson said at the recent Ft. Wayne Farm Show. “But some wait until it gets so painful that they have to change how they do things.” he stated in a recent FarmWorld article. Hopefully the cash that the increased cattle prices of 2015 have allowed all of us to make were used to make purchases that will lower our production costs during this rapidly declining market.

Cattle with documented capabilities to increase efficiency and productivity will continue to lead the sale price averages. Both the Southern Indiana Angus Association and the Northern Indiana Angus Association sales will include Angus genetics that can help improve the herds of those that choose to purchase cattle from those offerings. I hope to see many Indiana Angus Association members consigning and purchasing useful genetics through those sales.

Indiana Family Honored for Historic Angus Herd Melinda R. Cordell, Angus Media

The year 1953 was a significant one for the Haag family. The same year Mike Haag was born, his parents, Paul and Betty, established the family farm on Queen Road outside of Plymouth, Ind. On the farm, they raised beef and dairy cattle (as well as a pony for his sister Margaret), and eventually made the transition to entirely Angus cattle. Mike became a lifetime member of the American Angus Association in 1965, and there was no looking back. To recognize his dedication to the Angus breed, the American Angus AssociationŽ is proud to name Haag Angus Farm as a Historic Angus Herd. The award is presented to Angus breeders or immediate families who have been in continuous production of registered-Angus cattle for 50 years or more. In 1965, Mike and his father purchased two females at Billy Grimm’s Farm Sale. These O Bardoliermere females became Mike and Margaret’s 4-H projects and the foundation of the herd. Mike says the day he brought those two cows home was the proudest of his life. Februaray 2016 | 19

In 1967, father and son went to the Woebbeking Bros. Dispersion Sale, where they bought a bull that was sired by Centurion Royal King to add new genetics to their herd. The herd continued to grow. Mike met Peggy Sue Roda at the LaPorte County Fair, where both were exhibiting cattle. They were married in 1978 and had two children, Jeremy and Chad, who continued the tradition of showing Angus cattle. The family was recognized with many show champions over the years at many prestigious Angus events. One of their bulls won grand champion bull at the Indiana Angus Futurity Show and Sale, was sold to Whitestone Farms, renamed Whitestone Pilgrim, and won the reserve ROV grand champion bull at the Atlantic National in 1995. Peggy, Jeremy, and Chad continue to manage the herd of registered Angus cows at the home farm in northern Indiana. Their passion for the Angus business, started more than 50 years ago, is sure to continue for many years to come. Visit http://www.angus.org/www.angus.org for more information on the Historic Angus Herd Award and view a list of awarded members since the program began in 1988.

From the Boardroom Doc Howell

On September 9-11, 2015 the Board of Directors of the American Angus Association met at St. Joseph, Missouri. The Activities Committee approved that the 2018 National Junior Angus Show will be held in Madison, Wisconsin. The 2017 Regional Show will be the Western Regional, at Reno, Nevada. The 2017 regional preview shows will be: the MAJAC Regional Preview at Harrisonburg, VA, the Atlantic National Regional Preview at Timonium, MD and the All American Angus Breeders Futurity Regional Preview at Louisville, KY. The Breed Improvement Committee voted to reduce the minimum number of days required for feed reporting from 70 to 45 and the requirement for mid-test weights will be dropped. Staff was directed to develop a structured sire evaluation program and to report back to the Board. MaternalPlus participating herds can add sale book inserts and logos explaining the benefits of the program. The Finance Committee reported that the current assets of the Association are $55,732,000. Investments total $40,548,000. Net income for the period was $9,399,000 (eleven months of the fiscal year). The staff of Angus Genetics Inc. reported on ongoing genomic recalibration and discussed plans to go to a single-step genomic evaluation. An AGI GE-EPD logo is available for AGI customers to use in denoting genomically-tested animals in their catalogs and ads. Angus Productions Inc. reported that Angus Journal subscriptions are up 3%, and all measures of the public use of all of the media platforms indicate growth. A website Februaray 2016 | 21

that will incorporate all of the media platforms is in development. (The platform went online in January 2016. It is angus.media or just AngusMedia.) Certified Angus Beef reported on opening an office in Tokyo, Japan. CAB was recognized as the #1 Best Employer in Ohio. Sales figures indicate consumers are choosing quality even with higher prices. Certified cattle numbers are down 2.5% from a year ago, but acceptance rates are up 1.5% with some recent months exceeding 30% . The Board “discussed developing additional management tools for commercial producers in order to increase engagement of the commercial sector, provided that in no way would this result in certificates of registration being issued or EPDs being provided for non-purebred animals. Some bylaw changes to be brought before the annual meeting were approved defining who could nominate, be nominated or vote in the delegate election process and defining an Eligible Voting Member. Jim Sitz of Montana was nominated to serve as President and Chairman of the Board for 2016. Charlie Boyd II of Kentucky was nominated to serve as Vice Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Board. Kevin Yon of South Carolina was elected to serve as Treasurer of the Association for 2016. Mark Duffell of Virginia was elected as Outside Representative on the Angus Foundation Board of Directors for a one year term. Dwight (Kip) Palmer of New York was elected as the Industry Representative on the Certified Angus Beef LLC Board of Directors for a three year term. Dr. Larry Kuehn of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska was elected to serve as an industry liaison to advise the Boards of the Association for a three year term. The Board of Directors of the American Angus Association met in Overland Park, Kansas just before the Annual Meeting during the first week of November. The success of the Trade show was discussed. Future dates and locations of the annual meeting are: 2016 November 5-7, 2016 Indianapolis, IN; 2017 November 4-6, 22 | Indiana Angus News

2017 Fort Worth, TX; 2018 November 3-5, 2018 Columbus, OH and 2019 Reno, Nevada November 2-4, 2019. Details of the structured sire test mentioned at the September meeting were discussed.

Past: 1956 - Sixty (60) Years Ago – was a very big year for the Angus Breed in Indiana. The first of many Indiana Angus Futurity Shows and Sales was held on February 10 & 11, 1956 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. There were 255 members listed in the 1956 Indiana Angus Directory – and 53 WCIAA members listed. Present: Today –WCIAA offers many opportunities for members and non-members alike. Current WCIAA programs include:  WCIAA Winter Educational Meetings – on topics of interest to all beef cattle producers – regardless of breed preference and / or registered or commercial operations. 2016 meetings are planned for Saturday 1/23/16 at Turkey Run State Park - Marshall, IN and Saturday 3/19/16 at the Masonic Temple - Crawfordsville, IN.  WCIAA Newsletter / ADVS Program - newsletters are sent via US Mail to WCIAA members at their homes at least six (6) times per year. ADVS is an Advertising Supplement to the newsletters – and includes paid advertising for cattle and / or cattle related items that cattle producers are interested in buying and / or selling.  WCIAA Summer Tour / Field Day Program - a gathering of members, guests and anyone else interested in beef cattle – usually involving at least one herd visit - is held annually in late summer. It has been very popular and usually well attended. 2016 date, time and location TBA. We hope many of you will plan to attend in 2016. Future: WCIAA members and its leadership team – whose contact information is provided in the header above – plan to do all we can to promote the Angus breed in Indiana – with fun, fellowship and education along the way. We encourage your suggestions on how we can add value to membership in WCIAA. WCIAA Membership: Our membership goal for 2016 is 100 or more total members. 2015 membership was 101– up from 11 in 2005 (900%). We hope YOU will join us. Annual Dues: - $15.00 for First Year Members - $25.00 for Regular Members. We need dues paid by April 15th for your name to be included on the WCIAA Pages of the annual Indiana Angus Directory. Please contact Jack Sweeney at 317-844-5895 to join or for additional information.

Welcome to 2016 We hope you had a great 2015 and are enjoying the New Year. December was one of the warmest on records and for most of us one of the rainiest. Hopefully you did not have a lot of flooding or wind damage. The first week of the New Year was nice weather for January, but the second week brought winter reality with snow and cold. We want to thank all the people who visited, called, purchased cattle, semen, or just talked cattle.

In 2016 we’re looking forward to calves from the following sires: SAV Harvestor 0338---This performance powerhouse bull is one of our favorite sires. Sire of Resource, Renown, Recharge and more. SAV International 2020---This exciting proven performance son of Harvestor has super structure. His offsprings are deep, muscular and stylish. His first two calve crops have been outstanding. SAV Renown 3439---This Rito son is a full brother to Resource and Recharge. He combines; fleshing ability, muscle and supreme structure. Look for his calves to be in high demand. SAV Ten Speed 3022---Combines the popular sire AAR Ten X and the proven sire SAV Bismark. He adds low birth weight. We are excited to see his calves. SAV Birthstone 8258---We can always depend on this calving ease sire for low birth weights, yet he still transports capacity and thickness. SAV Cobra 9281---Our son of Final Answer has been a consistent sire of quality cattle. Calves have moderate birth weights but strong yearling weights. SAV North Dakota 7451---Our now deceased herd sire, has always sired moderate birth weight calves with style and capacity. His calves are popular with our customers. The first 2016 group of calves look great, see details in next issue.
