MICHIGAN ANGUS CELEBRATES 100 YEARS The Michigan Angus Association was organized in 1914 with eight charter members. The late Sidney Smith, then with U.L. Clark at Hunters Creek was elected president and Alex Minty of Weekcote was elected secretary-treasurer. Annual membership dues were one dollar. Very little record of association activities from that date until about 1940 was preserved. Sidney Smith was president for many years prior to 1949 when he was replaced by C. H. Reynolds. Since that date our state association presidents have been: 1950-51 1952-53 1954 1955 1956-57 1958 1959 1960 1961 1962-63 1964-65 1966 1967-68 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975-76 1977-78 1979-80

An important function of our association has been the sponsorship of a field day program and picnic with a breeder volunteering as host. The first such event was an “open house” held at Wildwood Farms in 1941 after an association sale in East Lansing, but was not officially sponsored by the association. The first field day, as we know them today, was held at Raona Farms in 1947 and while not held every year since then, the association has had many summer or early fall field days for the majority of the years. Association sponsored consignment sales were held prior to 1925, but were discontinued that year until 1940. Since their resumption, they have been an annual event with either or both a spring and fall sale being held, including the first Michigan Angus Futurity Show and Sale which was held in 1958. In recognition of the Michigan Angus Association’s centennial in 2014, several special activities and programs were held. Michigan Angus trivia was featured at the 2014 annual banquet and attendees were invited to bring along Angus memorabilia to share with everyone at the banquet. The trivia quiz was also available at the Michigan Angus Futurity and was posted on the Michigan Angus website. A large poster listing Michigan’s historic Angus herds as well as breeders who have been involved with Angus cattle for more than 35 years was displayed at the Futurity, the Michigan Cattleman’s Summer Round-up, the Preview Show and the summer field day. The Michigan House of Representatives also proclaimed March 31-April 6, 2014 as Angus Week in the State of Michigan, which coincided with the Michigan Angus Futurity. Several breeders also set up 10 www.michiganangus.org

information tables at the fall feeder calf sales held around the state. Our final activity was sponsoring a trip to Certified Angus Beef, headquartered in Wooster, Ohio. Sixteen members of the Michigan Angus Association enjoyed an in-depth and behind the scenes look at Certified Angus Beef (C.A.B.) as they took part in a special visit on October 3rd to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Michigan Angus Association. CAB is a unique stand-alone subsidiary of the American Angus Association, whose mission is to increase demand for registered Angus cattle through a specification-based, branded beef program to identify consistent, high quality beef with superior taste. CAB is considered the premium beef brand in the world and celebrated its 8th consecutive year of record volumes. During the 2014 fiscal year 880 million pounds of CAB products were sold to consumers throughout the United States and internationally. CAB is currently sold in 46 countries. Approximately $50 million was paid back to cattlemen in grid-based premiums as reported by packers back to CAB. The CAB Education & Culinary Center, opened in February 2012, was the hub of the visit. It includes industrial kitchens, multiple meeting spaces, dining areas and a meat lab. The center is capable of hosting multiple groups for hands-on learning and promotional events. Participants had a live view of a CAB carcass and perspective of the 10 science based specifications and they also had a tour of the CAB office building which displays an array of signs and posters from past marketing campaigns, original logo designs and photos of the key people behind the conception of CAB. An overview of the consumer research data driving the marketing efforts at CAB was also part of the program. We also hope to update the “History of Michigan Angus, 1873-1973 in the future. The Michigan Angus Association greatly appreciates the hundreds of breeders and Angus supporters who have given so much to the association over the past 100 years and we look forward to the future. www.michiganangus.org

MICHIGAN JUNIOR ANGUS ASSOCIATION MICHIGAN JUNIOR ANGUS ASSOCIATION TO CELEBRATE 50 YEARS In the mid 1960’s several Angus breeders – Herm Bakhaus, Richard Crissman and Herb Diuble, met with Dean Hurlbut from the American Angus Association to talk about the possibility of forming a junior Angus association in Michigan. The Angus breeders at that time had the foresight to want to provide an opportunity for young Angus breeders to learn leadership skills, promote the breed, train future leaders, develop interest in Angus cattle and become part of the “Youth Activities Department” of the American Angus Association. The Michigan Junior Angus Association was organized July 24, 1966 at the Michigan Angus Field Day held at Michigan State University. Duane Feikema of Evart was elected as the first President. Other officers and charter directors were Vice-president Jim Crissman; second Vice-president Dennis Good; Secretary-treasurer Pat O’Mara; and directors Bill Sheridan, Nancy Diuble, John Caviness, Dennis O’Mara, Sue Crissman and 1969-70 Michigan Junior Officers & Directors Mary Nagel. Bill Brittain, owner of Mahogany Farms, donated a heifer to the junior association. The heifer was sold in the 1967 Michigan Angus Futurity and the money from the sale of the heifer went into the junior Angus association treasury to provide funds for a beginning in Angus promotion. Kitty Kurtis Farms purchased the heifer for $1050. The organization grew tremendously in both numbers and activities. The first Michigan Junior Angus Association field day was held at MSU in 1967 and it was open to juniors from all breeds of cattle. The first Michigan Junior Angus newsletter was written in 1969 and the first Premier Jr. Exhibitor Award was presented in 1969. The first Michigan Jr. Angus Association Preview Show was held in June 1971 at the MSU Livestock Pavilion and the judge was Dr. Dave Hawkins. Other early activities the association helped to sponsor included a Michigan Junior Beef Education Day held in 1970 at MSU, a beef 1971 Michigan Junior Angus Showmanship - Pete Sweeney management clinic in 1974, a breeding certificates receiving the Curtis M. Brown Memorial Trophy. MICHIGAN JUNIOR ANGUS ASSOCIATION
Over the years the Michigan Junior Angus Association has continued to sponsor many activities and recognize members for their achievements. They have held socials at statewide shows, organized workshops focusing on youth and communication and recordkeeping skills, as well as multi-breed workshops, hosted breakfasts at the National Jr. Angus Show, held workdays to prepare for national contests, participated in every contest at the National Jr. Angus Show and helped promote beef at various activities throughout the state. When the National Junior Angus Board was organized in 1980, a Michigan junior, Sharon Diuble, was elected to the first national board of directors. Since that time, nine other Michigan juniors have served two year terms on the board and carried on major leadership roles. They were Lisa Bohlen, Clifford Simmons, Christine Simmons, Lisa Hawkins, Jennifer Hawkins, Ryan Sweeney, Renee Thelen, Andrew Foster, and Danielle Foster. Throughout the years the Michigan juniors have compiled an impressive record of accomplishments at the state and national level. Few states can claim as much national recognition as Michigan. This is not only a tribute to the young people, but to the many adults who have contributed their knowledge, support, time and advice over the years. The success of the juniors was made possible by many Angus breeders and enthusiasts. Over the years our Michigan Junior Angus Association members have had a large impact on agriculture, the Angus breed and current junior members. The juniors deeply appreciate all the support of their adult advisors over the years as well as Angus breeders from throughout Michigan and the country.

Since 1967 the Michigan Angus Auxiliary has sponsored a total of 82 Michigan juniors who have participated in the National Showmanship Contest. In 2013 there was no candidate. In 2014, Dylan Kennedy and Kendra Merriman represented Michigan. Dylan is the son of Jeff and Heather Kennedy of Nashville, and Kendra is the daughter of Joe and Susan Merriman of Lowell. Over the years, many women have given numerous hours of their time to the Auxiliary serving as officers, committee members and chairpersons, as well as helping out wherever needed. Several members have also been active in the American Angus Auxiliary, serving on various committees and as officers. Patti Rae, Lois Foster, and Nancy Thelen served as president of the American Angus Auxiliary in 1981, 1990, and 2008 respectively. Michigan has had the privilege of hosting the national auxiliary luncheons in 1968, 1981, 1990, and 2008. A heartfelt thank you is extended to everyone who has helped the Michigan Angus Auxiliary achieve its mission over the past 48 years. We look forward to working with Michigan Angus enthusiasts as we continue to embrace the tradition! 2015 MICHIGAN ANGUS AUXILIARY President:
