Vanderbilt raised eyebrows in the SEC, as well as in the larger university community, when it announced that James Franklin would be the new head football coach at Vanderbilt on the social networking website Facebook. The announcement was met with both praise and criticism of the university for using social media to deliver the news.

The Decision “Commodore Nation: We have a new head football coach. James Franklin will leave Maryland to lead Vanderbilt. More details later today at a news conference scheduled for 1 p.m. and streamed live at http://www.vanderbilt. edu/coach” This Facebook status, posted on Dec. 17 at 10:30 a.m., marked the first time an SEC university introduced a head football coach on a social networking site before using traditional media outlets. The announcement sent the online college football community into a frenzy,

with some blogs criticizing the university’s decision to use Facebook before a traditional press conference was held.

“We thought Facebook would be a terrific way to create more attention on an important university and athletic hire,” said Rod Williamson, Director of Communications for Vanderbilt University Athletics. “It should be noted that we followed our Facebook confirmation within minutes with all the typical methods of communication so that people not on Facebook would not be ignored.”

In the weeks leading up to the university’s official coaching announcement, Twitter and Facebook, two of the nations leading social networking sites, were each the site of significant amounts of heated debate and speculation as to who should be Vanderbilt’s next head football coach. The discussion elevated Vanderbilt to a top trending topic on Twitter, signifying the large amount of discussion taking place in the social media world.

Vanderbilt lost a well-known fixture of the university and Nashville community during break, with the Jan. 2 passing of Jean Keller Heard, widow of former Chancellor Alexander Heard. She was 86.

“As the ‘first lady’ of Vanderbilt for many years, Mrs. Heard left a lasting imprint on the university during a crucial time in history,” Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos said in a statement. “She was a devoted and loving mother and wife, who warmly welcomed students and faculty into her home. On behalf of

the Vanderbilt community, I offer deep and heartfelt sympathy to her family.”

529 women lined up Monday morning in freezing weather for recruitment rounds after approximately three inches of snow fell on Nashville the night before.

“As long as it’s not wet, I’m fine,” said freshman Carly Kilgore, “but I definitely opted for the snow boots option rather than cuter boots, so I’ve had to explain my style.”

Hannah Parker, Vice President of Panhellenic Recruitment, says the weather hasn’t affected rounds in any major ways.

“The week has gotten off to a great start, even with the snow. We’re very grateful to have a wonderful Plant (Operations) department, who have kept the roads and walks clear – and thus kept us safe,” Parker said.

Moran, “We wanted to be sure our fans heard the official word from us first, and Facebook provided a way to do this.”

In an interview with the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), Moran elaborated on the university’s social media efforts.

“Not putting big news on Facebook simply isn’t an option – that is where many of our audiences get their news, so we’re there, just like we’re on Twitter, on YouTube, at press conferences, on our website, etc.,” Moran said. “So we learned that these tools are no longer just nice-to-have additions but are, in many ways, at the center of our efforts.”

The Reaction A unique feature of using Facebook to make the announcement is the ability for Commodore fans to directly interact with the university through comments on the status post.

As of Tuesday morning, the announcement post had received 77 “Likes” and 89 comments.

The reaction was mixed.

“Welcome Coach! Go Dores,” wrote Facebook user Karlkim N’ Mod. “Whoever is running Vandy’s communication efforts : IE YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE, please call me for a free lesson in PR 101. Seriously...who let’s people comment like this? EPIC FAIL,” wrote Facebook user Emma May. Vanderbilt declined to remove negative comments, explicitly stating that they encourage all feedback from their fans. Moran said that the decision was part of a larger policy at Vanderbilt in favor of open discussion with the university community.

“We reaffirmed our commitment to our social media policy and philosophy of openness and non–censorship. We were not going to throw that out of the window when things started getting tough,” Moran told CASE. “We monitored the comments for what we always monitor for – vulgarity, obscenity and outright hate speech – but refrained from deleting anything from folks who simply were blowing off steam.”

Freshman Lindsey Franklyn likes the idea of the university using Facebook to spread information.

“I don’t see a problem with the way (Vanderbilt is) using Facebook right now. We’re using it the

way a university should; we’re using it to spread information to prospective students in an efficient manner,” Franklyn said. “Students check their Facebook. The Vanderbilt Facebook page is run in a very professional way.”

Williamson said he considered the announcement a success.

“We had tremendous feedback and participation so, yes, I’d call the Facebook rollout a success,” Williamson said. “However, there will always be some heartburn when negative comments are made as this is – for the time being – against the grain of ho w an organization typically has made big announcements. The tendency is to want to ignore negative opinions and put out a totally positive point of view.”

Following the announcement, Vanderbilt’s Facebook page experienced a significant increase in activity, according to Moran.

“We saw a jump of 113,665 more post views and over 5,700 more active users during and after the announcement compared to the previous week,” Moran said. “We are always looking to grow the Vanderbilt community using social media.”

The Future According to Moran, the university’s plans for Facebook do not end with announcing the new head coach. “(The university will) use it to bring Vanderbilt to students, faculty and staff, alumni, parents and the general community wherever they are, and to hear back from them,” Moran said. “We’ll continue to use it to share important and interesting news and information. Our overall goal is to use whatever tools are available to communicate with the global Vanderbilt community, and right now, Facebook is one of the most powerful of those tools.”

The university has launched a new photo stream on Flickr.com, a photo oriented social media site, called “365 Views of Vanderbilt”, that allows online users to view a new feature photo of campus taken

by Vanderbilt Photography Services team every day.

“These tools enable us to hear what our audiences are most interested in and give them dynamic and engaging content in ways that are most accessible to them,” Moran said.

Med Center uncompensated care costs on the rise kyle blaine News Editor Economic conditions and enrollment reduction to TennCare are to blame for recordbreaking uncompensated care costs, according to John Howser, Director of the Office of News and Communications at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

With a local unemployment rate of 8.7 percent and a national rate of 9.4 percent at the start of 2011, according to the Department of Labor, uncompensated care costs to VUMC are expected to rise as Americans have more difficulty obtaining affordable health care insurance privately or through an employer.

“I would say that yes, of course, there are ongoing concerns for the university about the ability of Middle Tennesseans to find and keep jobs, and with those jobs also have access to affordable health insurance,” Howser said.

VUMC shouldered the largest financial burden of uncompensated care in the city, $173,045,893 worth, out of a record-breaking $502.8 million dollars total in 2009, according to a Nashville Business Journal Report. The figure, which includes charity care, medically indigent and bad debt, is a 7.6

The figure is expected to rise to $216 million in 2010, said Warren Beck, VUMC’s Senior Vice President of Finance.

“Providing uncompensated care is not only necessary for VUMC to qualify for its nonprofit status, this continues as one of the university’s longstanding missions, treating those who cannot afford medical care for themselves or their families,” Howser said.

According to Howser, potential changes to the Health Insurance Reform Act following the 2010 elections make it difficult to determine its effect on uncompensated care costs.

“If (the Health Insurance Reform Act remains) unaltered by legislative changes intended by some members of the U.S. Congress and the Senate, yes this should help more Americans and Tennesseans gain access to affordable health insurance,” Howser said. “But until such time changes to the legislation are complete there is no way we can say for sure what the outcome will be for the medical center’s uncompensated care percentage.”

playing with several symphony orchestras throughout the Southeastern United States.

Upon arriving in Nashville with her husband in 1962, Heard soon established herself as an activist in the city’s social, music and civic scenes, a reputation she held for more than four decades.

Heard was an avid supporter of Vanderbilt’s main library, co-founding and serving as president of the Friends of the Vanderbilt University Library. In 1984, the library was named the Jean and Alexander Heard Library in honor of the couple’s dedication.

“If it wasn’t for Jean, we wouldn’t have the Friends of the Vanderbilt University Library,” said Vice Chancellor Rob Roy Purdy in a 1982

interview with The Tennessean. “She gave it birth and nurtured it through the years.”

She also played a key role in the merger of the Blair School of Music and Vanderbilt University in 1981.

Heard was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 2009. Plant Ops handles recent snow Nashville International Airport survives the snowy conditions

Plant Operations followed its snow removal plan, which indicates areas to be cleared first based upon whether students are on campus or if other events are taking place.

“Our number one priority is [clearing access] to the emergency room at the Medical Center,” said Mark Petty, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Plant Operations. “If students are here and in class, our secondary priority is to start at dormitories, working our way to student centers, and then to the academic buildings.”

While Plant Operations does purchase some equipment specifically for snow removal,

much of the equipment serves multiple uses. Much of the snow removal fleet consists of Hustlers – vehicles that function as mowers during the spring and summer but can also brush away snow in the winter.

“We hadn’t had a significant snow (storm) in about 10 years until last year,” said Petty.

“We just bungled up the snow removal because we hadn’t done it in so long. This is our third event in just over a month, so I think we’ve handled this one a lot better than we’ve handled others in the past.”

Despite the higher-thanexpected snowfall this season, Petty said that his office has no shortage of ice-melt, the salt alternative substance used by Plant Operations.

Because Metro Nashville’s Department of Public Works is responsible for public roads, that office also plays a role in snow removal. While the city typically keeps major traffic arteries such as 21st Avenue

Around 20 flights were cancelled as a result of the storm, mostly from other cities and airports hit with snow including Atlanta, Charlotte, Detroit, Memphis and New York-LaGuardia. Regardless, the storm brought “no overwhelming number of cancellations,” according to Richard.

that started it on Monday are anticipated to complete all rounds and join a chapter on Bid Day. “We have a large number of transfer students coming through recruitment this year,” Parker said. “We’re very excited that they have chosen to explore this aspect of our Vanderbilt community.”

According to Kristin Shorter, director of Greek Life, registration and first round participation numbers are very similar to last year’s numbers. 568 women registered for formal recruitment, down four from last year’s total.

However, the number of participating women in the first round went up by nine.

“Recruitment is an exciting time for both sorority women and potential new members,” Shorter said. “We hope that everyone will trust

the process and keep an open mind to find their best fit through it.”

Freshman Sara Fernandez says that despite the weather, the rush process had been worth it.

“Rush has been the most amazing sort of craziness I’ve ever experienced,” Fernandez said. “By the end of the day, I could not feel my face and toes, but I love how the process is just as exciting and important for us as it is for the sorority girls.”

Some, however, like freshman Kristin Adams, have found ways to enjoy the weather during the busy day.

“I do like (the snow),” Adams said. “It helps pass time between rounds because you can have snowball fights and make snow angels.”

Formal recruitment, which consists of display, philanthropy, entertainment and preference rounds, will continue until Jan. 16. ■

Welcome back seniors It’s good to be home.

Writers often—probably too often—use The Hustler’s opinion page to lament that something is occurring for the last time.

In three and a half years at Vanderbilt, I’ve read essays that waxed poetic on the last day of classes, the last football game Theodore of the s eason, the last tailgate preceding Samets that football game, the last days of the Bush administration, and many other Opinion Editor lasts.

Sometimes I’ve felt the same sorrow as those writers; other times I’ve rejoiced in the same event that they’re disappointed about.

But as I begin my last semester as an undergraduate at Vanderbilt, I’m not lamenting that I won’t be back in the fall. I’m getting ready to celebrate that right now, I’m here.

And given that I’ve got a plan for next year (law school) and I’m not too worried with maintaining my 4.0 (OK, maybe it’s a little bit lower than that), I’m going to enjoy my last hurrah.

In my last semester at Vanderbilt, I’m going to say no to Taaka and yes to Lonnie’s—no matter what’s due the next day. I’m not going to miss a chance to see our basketball team take on an SEC opponent in Memorial, and I’m not going to set foot in Stevenson.

Attention seniors: We have 13 weekends left here.

That’s it. I don’t want to hear anyone regretting that they did something that their friend suggested (but which sounded terrible) instead of doing what they really wanted on any one of those weekends.

Let me give you an example. My roommate has an

irrational hatred of Dan McGuinness. I can understand why it’s not his favorite bar; it can get a bit too crowded for my taste too. Whenever anyone wants to go out, they don’t even have to suggest Dan’s to elicit a fiveminute lecture from my roommate on everything that’s wrong with the bar. But if my roommate heeds my advice this semester, he’ll either just stop going to Dan’s on Thursday (or Friday, or Saturday), or he’ll stop complaining about it when others want to go.

But in some sense, he’s right too. We’re graduating in May. While I want to spend my last months here with the same folks I’ve spent my first three and a half years with, I also want to do what I’ve been saying I should do for all that time too: I want to enjoy Nashville—the Nashville beyond West End or Demonbreun.

For example, I’ve never been to Tootsie’s. I’ve never watched the sun rise from the top of Love Hill. And I’ve never been to a Sounds game. These are all things on my bucket list for this semester, as is crashing a Belmont party.

These places and more are all on my final semester bucket list, as is finally getting to the roof of Stevenson.

While your list might be slightly or completely different from mine, my point is this: make a list. Seriously. An actual, physical list. Use this newspaper if you want. And tack it to your bulletin board or refrigerator. And on May 13, when your parents are here, moving you out, make sure you can toss the list in the trash, knowing that you did everything you set out to do and more. ­ Theodore Samets is a senior in the College of Arts — and Science. To the editor: As a student from the Northeast, I am constantly reminded of how little the university actually does for students during inclement weather, especially wintry precipitation. The roads are no longer snow-covered and are melting all around campus. West End is clear!

Therefore, why suspend the Vandy Van service?

Now, you may counter with the argument that the streets inside Vanderbilt are not fully cleared or melted and are, therefore, unsafe to traverse, but I challenge you and the rest of the university staff to see past your shortsightedness. Last year’s January snow that was not cleared from campus roads for four days and suspended many key services for students made

me think about our school’s snow responses. Vanderbilt, the institution to which most of us pay ungodly amounts, should either invest in equipping a few of their many Plant Ops vehicles for plowing duties or hire someone to do it for us the few times a year it is necessary. This being the second night before school starts, it should be noted that many students are driving back to campus today, tonight and tomorrow.

Wouldn’t it be appreciated if the roads on campus were as well cleared as those leading to it?

In my Safety, Security and Risk Management class last spring, we analyzed the many faults associated with Vanderbilt’s snow-clearing response. The majority of the students wondered if Vanderbilt even did anything to help make the forced movements of students (classes were not cancelled) safer. I was pleased to see some cleared paths on campus

today and a few with a mini-Bobcat clearing the sidewalks on the west end of campus. However, this response is still not enough.

In short, please stop making reactionary decisions in a manner that will promote students to grow discontent with the services of our famed institution in the same way that New York City residents became enraged at their government for failing to clear their streets in a timely manner.

Be proactive, make a plan, and realize that shoveling and plowing snow isn’t just a courtesy; it is a necessary safety initiative.

Maybe then students won’t slip on the icy paths and will be able to use the new Vandy Vans with GPS mapping to their advantage when combating the cold temperatures.

Southern pride is misguided This year marks the 150th anniversary of the onset of the Civil War. Ideally, this meaningful anniversary could serve as a time of reflection about the current state of the South. In many quarters, including sections of Hudson Vanderbilt itself, the South’s role Todd in this war is viewed as heroic.

Columnist Large segments of the population view the South’s secession from a federal government as completely justified because they believe that government violated their states’ rights. As the Sons of Confederate Veterans put it this year, “All we wanted was to be left alone to govern ourselves.”

It is wrong for Southerners to glorify our past, though, because there is absolutely nothing glorious about it. The reality is that the most significant state’s right being usurped from the South was the right to own slaves. The first line of the Declaration of Secession by Mississippi states, “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth.” All other Southern states that wrote declarations of secession identified slavery as the principle inducement for secession as well.

Admittedly, the South was not only concerned about maintaining slavery. It also cared about the states’ rights to suppress freedom of speech, such as that of abolitionists, the right to violate the sovereignty of non-slave states by abducting runaway slaves with the use of lethal force, and the right to secede after elections they found unfavorable. Many southerners to this day still believe in secession after elections they disagree with. Shortly after Obama took office, an anti-tax rally was held in Texas, during which protestors chanted, “Secede!”. Afterwards, Governor of Texas Rick Perry suggested that, while he does not endorse the idea of secession, Texas could secede if it wanted to.

Why, then, do millions of Americans still treat the Confederate flag with such reverence?

Whatever their reasons are, it is unlikely they are positive. The South has dragged its feet on every single civil rights issue this country has faced. Its citizens were (and are) more opposed to women’s right to vote, desegregation, and the decriminalization of sodomy than any other region of the country. The South currently has higher rates of violent crime (despite its use of the death penalty with its purported deterrence effect), higher rates of obesity, and lower educational attainment on average than other states. It also has the highest rates of teenage pregnancy, divorce (despite its religiosity), and wealth inequality. In fact, the term “culture of honor” is regularly used to describe how southerners respond to slights with more physical aggression than other Americans.

What is there to be proud of? What, in all of American history, has the South ever done that has separated it from the rest of the country in a positive light? Even if the South had positively distinguished itself from the rest of the U.S., which it hasn’t, why would that reflect well on the people who just happen to be born there?

There is absolutely no reason to honor the South on the anniversary of a war it fought in order to maintain the right to own human beings. Even the more thoughtful individuals I encounter still honor confederate soldiers’ bravery as they do all soldiers who died in the Civil War, but what is bravery for the cause of injustice? We Southerners should be embarrassed by, not proud of, our ancestors who volunteered to fight and die for the Confederacy. There is nothing intrinsically praiseworthy about sacrificing your life, and there is nothing laudable about taking a position that was indefensible 150 years ago and attempting to defend it now. ­ Hudson Todd is a sophomore in the College — of Arts and Science. Where to drink on the card in 2011

Noshville... Who knew?

Who knew that Noshville, Nashville’s premier New York-style delicatessen, has a full-service bar? The restaurant features a full selection of liquors, wines and various domestic and imported beers, all within walking distance of campus.

Pros: Noshville’s bar selection is impressive for this kitschy restaurant. The food is not only delicious but served up quick and with a smile from an attentive wait staff. Having a mimosa with breakfast — the best way to beat a hangover — is a refreshing, tasty addition to brunch.

My mimosa was delicious, and I think it might have even been made with freshsqueezed orange juice — extra points in my book.

Cons: At this kind of restaurant, I wouldn’t feel comfortable ordering my favorite drink (Grey Goose with lime juice) alongside a pastrami sandwich, even if said deli has a full-service bar. Also, the total for my breakfast—mushroom and spinach omelet, potato pancakes, toast and a mimosa—came to almost $20 after tax and tip.

Yes, eating sushi in a landlocked state is fishy. Zumi, resident Japanese restaurant of Hillsboro Village, may make a mean “spicy chick” roll, but I’ve always been of the opinion that ‘real’ sushi isn’t

made with chicken.

Zumi redeemed itself with a new, full-service bar. The restaurant has always had a liquor license — that’s how they were able to sell you adorable miniature cans of Sophia champagne — but until recently, the layout of the restaurant wasn’t conducive to a bar scene. With the renovation, Zumi has transformed itself into a chic eatery with a sleek, wood bar.

Pros: With a new menu of signature cocktails — which I was lucky enough to sample during the concoction process — as well as the old staples of Asian and domestic beers, sake and wines, one could easily get plastered on the card. Purchasing drinks with monopoly money? I’m in.

Cons: Did I mention they make chicken sushi? If you’re from a coast, Florida or anywhere with fresh fish you may be disappointed.

However, along with the renovation, Zumi updated its menu, so perhaps the sushi experience may be more authentic than past visits.

For the debut column, Kyle Meacham, Assistant Life Editor, interviewed one of the most recognizable faces on campus: Frank Wcislo, the Dean of the Commons, and a member of the Vanderbilt Arts & Sciences faculty since 1984. With almost 30 years teaching at Vanderbilt under his belt, this campus fixture reflects on the music of his adolescence and what’s on his iPod today.

What were you listening at age 5?

We didn’t own a stereo. This was the dawn of television, and I don’t remember albums at all. I guess, “Who’s the leader of the club that’s made for you and me? M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E,” from the Mickey Mouse Club theme song.

15 (1960s) Diana Ross and The Supremes, “Come See About Me,” “Stop! In the Name of Love,” “Baby Love.” By listening to Motown, white kids growing up in the segregated Chicago suburbs learned about the African-American world they were isolated from.

25 (1970s) Bob Dylan, “Blood on The Tracks.”

The words still meant something, when music seemed to be drifting into a meaningless “groovy” and then the disco phase.

35 (1980s) Bruce Springsteen, “Born in the USA.” Loved that the title cut was a protest against what happened to Vietnam veterans when they came home, and the line from “Dancin’ in the Dark”— “you can’t start a fire without a spark.”

45 (1990s) “The Lion King.” My family and I were living in England. My kids were 13, eight and one-and-a-half-year-old twins, and I was barely standing. The twins loved dancing and being swirled around to “The Circle of Life.”

In 2011, at age 59…

Black-Eyed Peas, “The E.N.D.” I live in The Commons and listen to “I Gotta Feeling.” It reminds me of you all... that and Lady Gaga.

This past year was one for the record books in Vanderbilt sports, highlighted by three head football coaches, two big wins in basketball over instate rival Tennessee and an SEC individual champion. The Hustler sports staff reviews the top ten storylines from 2010 in Commodore sports.

Magical: that’s the only way to describe the atmosphere in Memorial Gym on Feb. 9, when the Commodores took down rival Tennessee, 9071. After triumphing in Knoxville just two weeks earlier, Vanderbilt completed its first sweep of the Vols since 2005. Few expected an easy victory over the No. 12 Volunteers for the Commodores, especially with freshman sharpshooter John Jenkins hospitalized with a stomach virus.

However, led by sophomore swingman Jeffery Taylor’s early onslaught and a strong showing on the defensive end by sophomore Andre Walker, Vanderbilt raced out to a 19-4 lead. Taylor finished with a then-career high 26 points, and senior point guard Jermaine Beal dropped 20 of his own, including several timely three-pointers that kept the home crowd rocking until the final buzzer sounded.

After forcing Florida State into the decisive game in a best-of-three series, the Commodores fell one swing short of advancing to the College World Series, falling to the Seminoles, 7-6. While the Commodores outscored Florida State 2018 overall in the NCAA Super Regional series, Vanderbilt was unable to get the final run it needed, as Florida State instead punched their

Rather than charge for admission, Vanderbilt encouraged fans to make a donation to the Nashville chapter of the American Red Cross at the gate.

Seconds later, it was the Commodores instead who saw their season end in disappointment when Danero Thomas sank a 15-foot jumper as time expired. This marked the second time in three years that a fourth-seeded Vanderbilt team exited the postseason after a stunning first round loss.

As the first sole SEC Golfer of the Year in Vanderbilt women’s golf history, Marina Alex had something of an above-average sophomore year in college. With four top-two finishes and six top-five, Alex saved the best for last in the 2010 spring season. Alex shot five-under par at the SEC Championships then defeated Tennessee’s Erica Popson on the second hole of a sudden death playoff to win the conference crown.

After a top-10 finish by Alex helped the Commodores qualify as a team for the NCAA Championships, Vanderbilt placed seventh. Alex became the sixth player to earn an All-SEC first team nod and second to win SEC Golfer of the

Seven weeks before the season opener against Northwestern, Coach Bobby Johnson abruptly retired as head football coach, leaving Vanderbilt football fans speechless. Johnson never gave concrete reasons for his retirement — he only said, “Football is not life.” Johnson had been with the program since 2002.

His replacement, Robbie Caldwell, led the football team to its second consecutive 2-10 season and resigned on the day of the final game of the season. Due to the timing of Johnson’s retirement, Caldwell was forced to use Coach Johnson’s system and did not have time to recruit any players previously untargeted by the Commodores.

Sports Editor With an 11th place finish at the NCAA South Regional competition on Nov. 14, sophomore cross country runner Jordan White qualified for the national championship a week later in Terre Haute, Ind. At the championship race, White finished 112th of 255 runners with a time of 21:24, the best result for a Vanderbilt runner at the NCAA Championships in school history.

As if the community’s generosity wasn’t enough of a spectacle, the Commodores battled back from three separate deficits against the Cardinals, setting up a towering walk-off home run by Jason Esposito in the 17th inning to earn Vanderbilt an 11-10 victory.

Football hires coach James Franklin to lead team

jackson martin Asst. Sports Editor After a three-week search following Robbie Caldwell’s resignation, James Franklin was named Vanderbilt’s 27th head football coach. This marks the first head coaching job for the former Maryland offensive coordinator, who turns 39 in February. Franklin is the first black coach of any major sport at Vanderbilt and only the third black football coach in the Southeastern Conference, following former Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom and current Kentucky coach Joker Phillips. Franklin had served as an assistant wide receivers coach for the Green Bay Packers and the offensive coordinator at Kansas State before being hired by Head Coach Ralph Friedgen at Maryland in 2007.

After seven hours of driving, you’ll want to free yourself in Chicago’s bustling urban atmosphere.

Sports fans will appreciate the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, which boasts more than 5,000 sports artifacts on display. If you’d rather be outdoors, check out the Birmingham Zoo, a nonprofit organization that lets you “adopt” an animal to ensure its care and feeding. Birmingham also features various attractions such as an Adventure Water & Theme Park and plenty of golf courses for those looking to spend time in the sun. Bowling Green, Ky. 1 hr. - 70 mi. from Vanderbilt

For a brief escape, visit Bowling Green for a day and still make your Sunday night study group! Car aficionados will love the Corvette museum which features more than 70 models in a 10,000-squarefoot building. You also can experience the great outdoors through the many recreational activities available in the area. Mammoth Cave, Ky. is only 45 minutes northeast of Bowling Green, so you’ll be sure to find adventure here too.

Bowling Green still sees snow early in the year, so take the quick drive at the end of March or beginning of April when temperatures are more comfortable.
