AUDIO EXCERPT

Louis Gallait’s painting representing the abdication of Charles V hides an improb able story. Between 1841 and 1845, this monumental painting was effectively dismantled and rolled around a large wooden cylinder to be sent across a part of Europe by train. The work was exhibited in various cities as propaganda for Belgium, which had only been independent for ten years or so at the time.

I invited students from the Academy of Fine Arts of Tournai to roam from the Museum through the city of Tournai with the wooden roller that was used to transport the painting. The performance was filmed with a drone. Each landscape crossed by this curious object suggests different interpretations. It is reminiscent of a religious procession when the roller approaches the cathedral, of a funeral when the bearers enter the graveyard in the north of the city, and it looks like a tree trunk when it is engulfed in a park. The video delivers the performance as it took place in November 2021, in its actual length. It takes the form of a long visual silence interrupted by short dialogues taken from the film Dispute in Valladolid by Jean-Daniel Verhaeghe. The film refers to the political and religious debates that took place in the middle of the 16th century within the empire of Charles V to determine whether the indigenous people in the New World had a soul or not and to frame the consequent rules for dominating and converting them.

Strolling through the greenhouses of the Botanic Garden in Meise, young women discuss the survival strategies peculiar to specific plants. They explore different themes around the theory of “mutual aid” by Peter Kropotkin. Contrary to the Darwinist hypothesis of survival of the fittest, Kropotkin demonstrated that coop eration and mutual aid are the major factors of evolution and progress. Their discussions then evolve to discourses on the foundations of capital ism in the Middle Ages. With personal interpretations of the research by historian Silvia Federici, they discuss the place of women in this growing paradigm based on the privatization of land. At that time, many women were marginalised after being dispossessed of common parcels of land on which they used to cultivate for subsistence. Instead of healers they were judged as witches, initiating a social hunt onThewomen.discussions with moments of collective singing and of watching a video explaining how African women used to hide rice in their hair before fleeing from slavery.01-02
