"Bunny and Polaroid"- Graphite Pencil Piece References
My first assignment in IBHL Visual Art was to create a realistic pencil drawing on an object that was important to us. For this project, I chose a bunny that my friends got for me during Valentine’s day and Polaroid camera I used that day I used to capture the memory of that day.
This object was important to me because it was a gift that was unexpected and very nice of them. even though it may not be
of value to anyone else, it reminded me of that day as well and the effort my friends put into maintaining friendship and being there for me.

The reason I chose to do a piece in charcoal and in B&W was because I had never really experimented with charcoal before this and I thought it would be a good chance to do so. The oldest version of the film camera was all in black and white and I wanted to recreate that effect through my medium as well.
Brainstorm
My piece""Snapshot," a thematic extension of a graphite pencil artwork I did earlier in the year called "Bunny and Polaroid", however, this piece captures 5 different scenes and angles of a bunny and Polaroid camera.
For my next assignment, I decided to expand on the idea of capturing a moment so that it can be recalled and treasured for a long time. To capture the sense of a moment being timeless, I decided to do my piece in black and white and to create a snapshot effect through cutting out one of the panels of my artwork.
In the center of the piece, the black space in the center represents the viewfinder on the Polaroid camera which can be used to observe the scene that a person is capturing. By seeing through it, the viewer can imagine the sixth picture as anything they want to.
"Snapshot"Charcoal Piece
When I was a child, I always drew the sun in the top left hand corner of the page and I wanted to incorporate a similar technique.
The other concept I explored was one which described childhood as a maze; confusing and exciting. Upon leaving the maze, one would enter into adulthood.
Brainstorm
I also sketched out the most classic flavors and types of candy to incorporate into my piece for the gingerbread house that awaited Hansel and Gretal at the end of the forest.
Before creating a concept, I did a mindmap of the things I associated with stuffed animals and dolls. Most of them were happy memories associated with childhood and the stories of childhood such as Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, the three little pigs and the Wizard of Oz.
To convey the happiness and naivety of childhood, I decided to incorporate and combine elements from classic childhood tales such as "Hansel and Gretel" and "Wizard of Oz"

I also utilized a more "childish" stroke and technique to replicate how children draw in to convey a more imaginative style.
AHS Jack Doherty Pottery Exhibition
The Jack Doherty pottery exhibition was the first outing of our art class this year. Jack Doherty, an irish potter, is most famous for his soda fired porcelain and his works have been widely featured across Europe and Asia.
His working process involves a unique soda firing technique which features a mixture of water and sodium bicarbonate into a kiin at high temperatures which added a unique texture to his pottery. His works have been a source of inspiration for me because I haven’t really gotten the chance to explore 3D artworks prior to this exhibition.

I wanted to create a comic that depicts a fictional story of what pets do while their owners are out running erands. Some activities included hosting a party with neighboring pets, doing household chores and ,in general, just being up to no good.
When I finished drawing, I scanned all my pages into the computer and cleaned it up using photoshop and rearranged the order of the pages in In design.
"While You're Gone"- Micron Pen Comic Art
Creating Thumbnail Sketches and Drafts of the Pages
Each spread of the comic discusses a stage in Katherine Johnson's life. Sections include early life, education, early career, major accomplishments, legacy, etc.
Creating the Prototype I created the prototype of the comic by printing out each page of the comic separately and gluing the back side of it together.
Encountering Obstacles When I printed the comic, it frequently came out either upside down or in the incorrect order, so I had to attempt it lots of times in order to get my comic to be in the perfect order. Also, I made sure to fold the paper really neatly when it printed because, if I missed the center even a little bit, the whole book just came out looking really messy and had pages that weren't the same width.

Creating "Shoot for the Stars"- Micron Pen Comic
Original Order of the Comic I figured out the order at which I would arrange the pages so that they would print right side up using my comic prototype.
When my comic was in the right order, i scanned the separate pages into Indesign, rearranged it into the double sided order and printed it out.
Sewing the entire comic together with a book binding needle After I printed the pages of my comic out double sided, with the order of the pages rearranged, I put holes through the spine of the comic in order to sew the seperate pages of the comic together.

"Home"Photography
I learned a lot from my mistakes while I was developing photos. During my first attempt at developing my photo, I accidently opened the door to the dark room and all my photos were runied.
This project was the first time I used a film camera and developed photos in our school's dark room.
Eseentially I went around Taipei taking photos of things that caught my interest.I I took lots of photos of popular tourist destinations but ultimately, the photo I ended up as my favorite was the outside of an apartment near my house.

Cruel Love- Photography
Symbols I associate with both China and its marital culture

I started brainstorming this concept with a mind map and the words and phrases associated with family.
Final Pieces
Even though this culture was in many ways cruel, they have learned the significance of compromise and respecting one another because they didn’t love each other in the beginning of their relationship. Because of this, I decided to make a piece both to celebrate this beauty of this culture and the cruelty of it.
Objects in the final piece
My first cultural piece was inspired by the wedding culture of China in the 1960s. It stressed the importance of power, wealth and the creation of alliances in marriage rather than love. Most couples at the time, including my own grandparents, got married into this culture which downplayed the significance of love before duty.Â
After my
Into the Rabbit Hole Themed Exhibition 3D art installations at the exhibition
"Into the Rabbit Hole" is a traveling "Alice in Wonderland" themed exhibition.
The concept behind this show was that the viewers would perceive the the exhibition as if they were Alice; traveling chronologically and experiencing different spaces in a warped sense of time.
Illustrations at the exhibition
Through visiting this exhibition, I gained lots of inspiration on how to approach incorporating a more whimsical and dreamy style into my artwork while trying out different mediums.
Pool of Tears
In addition to Magritte paintings, the illustrative pieces at this exhibition also became a source of inspiration for my own exhibition as I also really liked the organisational curation of the show and how the works were arranged together.
For each of the still lifes, I learned a different technique for how to approach observation drawing with different mediums For instance, I used a huge amount of charcoal on my monochromatic still life and worked by coloring in really dark sections then erasing portions to add details.
Still life practice- using charcoal and oil pastel
Charcoal A new technique I learned was to draw in a complementary color to whatever color I am drawing on top of that in order to darken the color later on
I started both of the still lifes by using a viewfinder then sketching out a thumbnail
Oil Pastel
Andy Warhol is one of the many artists who inspired me into centering my artworks around daily objects and common experiences that everyone can understand.
"Cows"
"Mao Zedong" This Warhol exhibition also encouraged me into learning more about the Pop Art Movement and popular consumer culture from the 50s.
"Marilyn Monroe"
"Marilyn Monroe"
i especially like his pieces of Marilyn Monroe. Warhol portrays his subjects in an extremely bold and straightforward way which is an artistic technique I really like.

For this piece, I wanted to replicate the style and format of a Pantone color palette.Â
Like the Pantone palette, each day in life is also unique and a cause worth celebrating so I decided to incorporate a lot of celebratory imagery such as champagne and a Polaroid camera to help presure the feelings of different moments.
I also used glitter on top of the spilt portion of the nail polish in order to convey a more celebratory mood and to add a more unique texture to the piece.
Missing Michael- Gouache Observational Piece Practice Drawing
When I was in elementary school, I had a dog named Michael. Unfortunately, by the time I reached middle school, he had died from old age.
This piece celebrates his life and his sense of compansionship.

I utilized all light colors and gentle- looking florals to give the piece more dimension.
During the summer between Junior and Senior year, I was exposed to a lot of very illustrative styles of art while I was on a trip to Los Angeles.

When I finished the drawing, i colored the background hot pink with a marker. however, I didn't really like the effect of it and I scanned the word into my laptop and changed the background into a lighter more gentle shade of pink.

When I was first introduced to the project, the first image I associated with Taipei was 101. Later on however, I decided that it was way too common of a symbol and decided to go with something else. I thought about the connection that I personally had with Taipei and the experiences I’ve had in Taipei that are unique to me.

Production: Galaxy Dreams The production of "Galaxy dreams" was the first time I worked with a sculptural medium like ceramics.
It was difficult to make the sides of the bowls and plates without hitting the clay too hard.
I mixed lots of different colors together in order to create a whimsical, marble like pattern.
"Galaxy Dreams" are a series of ceramics pieces that were inspired by the random whimsical patterns of galaxies and planets. Though each galaxy is a unique color and pattern they are all pretty consistent in the way they look, which is the appearance I was trying to replicate through this piece.
My class brainstormed a concept for our IB art show together. Our final decision came down to "Wandering Mind, Happy Mind".
Production: IB Exhibition Poster and Invitation
The reason for deciding this theme was because there are some who question the value of a wandering mins and letting your imagination roam free. But our class believed that this was a trait which defined as all as artists, hence naming the show after our common ground as artists.
Later on, however, our IB art class ended up doing a giant sketch together. I really liked some of the imagery that we incorporated into this collaborative piece. So I decided to curate our show based on the imagery in this piece.
Some of the ideas I initially explored included a paint spill which would change into a different whimsical scene.
