Sketches are not about looking pretty but about communicating
ideas. Whether it is solving initial design problems or sketching iterations, it is how us colleagues can communicate to one and other , especially to our clients. Being able to invision your idea on paper is a skill that an architectural field needs.

Urbino, Italy Study abroad
Urbino, as with most cities in Italy, is a palimpsest. That is, it is constructed over long periods of time and appears as layers of different constructions and periods that respond one to another. Urbino is more than just the location of our study abroad program. It is an encyclopedia, a history that documents the evolution of architectural thinking and its corresponding search for a language. The semester’s project was divided into two parts: part one is primarily focused on the analysis of the existing urban fabric of Urbino for the purpose of discovering its genetic code or the logic that binds its construction, material and elements. Part two continues the analysis: the genetic code of Urbino will become a primary influence on the design of an architectural intervention at the campus of the University of Urbino, near the design studio and student housing. All final projects will demonstrate each student’s understanding of De Carlo’s genetic code of place, the urban environment and structure of Urbino.

Longitudinal site consists of three elements: concrete, vegetation, and water. There are two piazzas tying as one and in between this journey are rhythmical space allowing four buildings to protrude out the topography. One piazza is surrounded and emphasize on the tectonic architecture atmosphere. Standing by the fountain point of view, it draws one’s eyes towards the thin channel of water that step downs with the hill, leading to the other end of the piazza; enclosed by vegetation and overlooking the hill country side.

The objective of this project is to bring forward the concept of water to the public’s attention. In designing this boutique hotel, we took on a didactic approach to explore contemporary ecological uses of water. One of these ecological uses of water is aquaponics. Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (the soil-less growing of plants) that grow fish and plants together in one integrated system. The fish waste provides an organic food source for the plants, and the plants naturally filter the water for the fish. Aquaponics is a natural ecosystem that uses only 1/10th of the water of soil-based gardening, and even less water than hydroponics or recirculating aquaculture.
Because Aquaponics is a cleaner, more sustainable and economical form of gardening, it can have a benefical impact to Mexico City which struggles with water scarcity. To instill this didatic approach of design within our hotel, the aquaponics were incorporated on each floor of the hotel;from the bar and resturaunt to the actual hotel rooms. The aquaponics systems were placed to be seen on the building exterior in order to attract visitors so that they may enter the hotel and learn about aquaponics. Another ecological system we incoporated within the hotel design is hydroponic green walls. These green walls were used to illustrate a bold statement.

Eight-Eleven Roosevelt is located between Roosevelt Street and Mission road north of I-10. Our proposal aims to blend the urban life style with spaces used for the performing arts. The design of the auditorium re-uses an existing warehouse built in 1920 located on the corner of the site. Adjacent to the theater is an outdoor plaza that can hold large events for the surrounding community.

Polaris Polaris is a wall mounted light design which luminate the room with a soft radiance. The crystal is manufactured of two contrasting materials: transparent arcyclic and opaque arcylic with a brown seal in the back. The brown seal made it successful due to its richness of warm white afterglow. The rear of the crystal is transparent so light can be reflected off the plywood walls and on the back there is slit of voids to let light through and touch the wall. Polaris got its name as a result of resemblance of a glowing star. Polaris is located in the end of one of the most popular constellation called the Little Dipper. Because constellations are geometric, I taken the concept into the light design’s form.
