CONCEPT

FOREWORD

This thesis was an opportunity for me to realize that we might actually really help people by making playful designs, and this is the real spirit of “WHY DESIGN”. The reason I chose this topic because of my grandparents. They are both retired, but their lifestyles are totally different. My grandpa is very social and active, but my grandma is opposite. My grandpa used to be a serious police officer, but he found his hobbies and courage to pursue his dream. So he became an artist who is happy to specialize in calligraphy. He is 86 now, and he realizes he has to increase and recreates his social network and he is not afraid to make new friends or actively participate in activities. My grandma used to be a very social and active person. After they moved to another city, she lost contact with her friends. As the time passed, she didn’t increase her group of friends, so her social network became smaller and smaller. Now has she stopped seeing the purpose of life, and her emotional health and physical health are declining. After I moved to the U.S, I found out that the seniors who live here have more chances to have a more active life than in Taiwan. The seniors’ average health scores are better, and there are more activities, clubs, events and classes for seniors. That is why I located my thesis target location in the U.S. Here retirees have more opportunity to be come active, and I’m happy help more people with my design.

BACKGROUND ABOUT THE TOPIC

A STUDY AT HEBREW UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER AND HEBREW UNIVERSITY HADASSAH MEDICAL SCHOOL REPORTED THAT SENIORS WHO DO ANY AMOUNT OF EXERCISE APPEAR TO LIVE LONGER AND HAVE A LOWER RISK OF DISABILITY.

Retirement involves a change in lifestyle for most people, and a number of reports show that retirement is bad for mental and physical health. It also increases the chances of depression. Retirees need to keep their mental, physical, spiritual and social lives active. Most of the organizations and associations for retirees are focused on “What you can do” in retirement, but I think retirees should set their life goals based on re-energizing and finding new insights into themselves. Then they will realize “What they want to do and why.” REVERVE

WHY IT MATTERS DEFINING THE PROBLEM

A NUMBER OF REPORTS SHOW THAT RETIREMENT IS B A D F O R M E N TA L A ND PHYS I CA L HEA LTH, A ND ACTUALLY RETIREMENT INCREASES THE CHANCES OF DEPRESSION BY 40%.

I found out that a lot of retired people are actually unhappy with their retirement. Some of them even feel depressed, or that their lives are without purpose. Oddly enough, during all our working years, we wish for freedom. People can’t wait to be wild, happy and free in retirement. When retirement comes, not all of seniors feel relaxed and happy.

REVERVE

In fact, according to statistics, there are 41 million people over 65 in the U.S, and 19% of those people over 65 are unhappy. This amounts to 7.9 million retirees. Moreover, in the U.S., the average age of retirement is 62, and the average length of retirement is 18 years. That means those 7.9 million retirees were dissatisfied for over ten years.

RESEARCH COLLECTING AND ORGANIZING

RETIREES NEED TIME TO TRANSITION INTO RETIREMENT. DURING THE FIRST FEW MONTHS OR YEARS, RETIREMENT BEGINS IN A HONEYMOON PERIOD, BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT WILL NOT LAST LONG.

The way I did my research is to read a bunch of statistics, news, online information, moreover, I did the surveys and user testing by online or face-toface meeting. I also went to a senior center and a church; randomly talked with retirees and small talked by phone with friend’s families who are my target audience because I wan to get closer to my audiences and get more insights from them.
