FUTURE HOMEOWNERS As soon as I opened the door and saw the burgundy living room with its huge fireplace and then the gray primary bedroom with its own fireplace, I knew the house was meant for us. Now after forty one years of living in the house and raising a family, it is time for me to move on and let another family enjoy it. I hope they love the house as much as we did; holiday dinners in the dining room, parties in the living room, hanging out with friends never leaving the kitchen table, secret club meetings in the attic (the kids), roasting marshmallows before the fireplace (all of us), candlelight dinners before the fireplace and sleeping before the fireplace.... Not only did we love the house, we loved the neighborhood, its location and people. When we were younger, my husband heard the train whistle, ran from the house and caught the train to work in New York. When I forgot birthday candles, I ran to the village and got them without anyone knowing I had left the party. We walked to the library, the post office, restaurants, stores, Memorial Park, Maplewoodstock, the Village Halloween Parade, heard concerts, and saw the Memorial Day Parade and fireworks from our yard. We saw young couples not yet pregnant have babies, and those babies go off to college and have careers of their own. We were always sad to see our neighbors, who often became our friends, move away. We were sure the new people couldn’t possibly be as nice and we were amazed to find out they were. When we first moved in, our children shoveled snow for the old lady across the street. More recently neighbors snow blew our walks, never making us feel bad, claiming the snow blower was a Christmas gift and like a new toy. They shoveled our driveway, even the hard iced over part at the bottom. When we were sick, they brought us homemade chicken soup. When Covid came, they brought us masks, hand sanitizer and toilet paper. When my husband died they came to the funeral, they brought me sunflowers to brighten my darkest days. As the torch is passed to a new family, I hope they experience the same sense of belonging, warmth, and community that has defined our time at 137 Maplewood Avenue.
