The Dutch town of Zundert is possibly best known as the birthplace of artist Vincent van Gogh. Situated near the Belgian border, this quiet town where Vincent spent his early years, has a few significant sights and offers visitors a chance to walk in the artist’s footsteps, to ‘meet his family, discover his roots, and experience his hometown’.

During our visit to Zundert, we started out at the Vincent van GoghHuis, part of which is on the former site of Vincent’s boyhood home (note: the original house is no longer there). This rather small center serves as a tourist information office, living arts center, and gallery.

Family Tree Display

The permanent exhibit consists of several interactive displays with an audio guide focusing on Vincent’s family and his life in Zundert.

The room adjoining the interactive display holds an exhibit dedicated to artists influenced by the life and work of van Gogh. Here you’ll see quotes from the artists and samples of their own artwork.

The double doorway covered with a portrait of Vincent leads back to the multi-level corridor providing access to the gallery and gardens.

From the Vincent van GoghHuis, we made our way around the corner to Vincent van Goghplein to see the modern statue of Vincent and his brother Theo. Erected in 1964 the statue was designed by sculptor Ossip Zadkine and serves as a lasting monument to the strong bond between these two brothers.

Just across the square is the early 19th-century Dutch Reformed Church. It was here, in this very small church that Vincent’s father Theodorus began his career as a Protestant minister, and it was here that Vincent was baptized.

Of great significance in the church graveyard is the simple stone slab marking the burial site of Vincent’s brother (also named Vincent) who died at birth in 1852, exactly one year before Vincent the artist was born.

In addition to exhibition space and special workshops, the Vincent van GoghHuis offers an artist-in-residence program, welcoming artists who wish to live and work in Zundert.

Adjacent to the church, is the small sexton’s house, now used as a gallery and living space for the artist in residence. Next-

door is a modern guest studio also for use by the visiting artist.

As part of a joint initiative of the Van Gogh Europe Foundation, Zundert and other locations in the Netherlands, Belgium, England, and France are hosting VanGogh2015, a series of special exhibits and events commemorating the 125th anniversary of Vincent’s death.
