ollywood star ac tors, Chinedu Ikedieze popularly known as Aki, and his screen twin, Osita Iheme a.k.a Pawpaw will smile to the bank soon as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has allegedly set aside $800,000 approximately, N138.4 million to sponsor 10 Nigerians in the entertainment industry to cheer
the Super Eagles in the forthcoming world cup in Brazil. In the financial plan allegedly presented to the National Assembly, the NFF had revealed its decision to invite the duo of Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme and eight other Nigerians in the entertainment industry for the world football fiesta in June. An online publication had alleged the federation had yesterday,
received in audience four Nollywood stars who came to make case for themselves. But the General Secretary, Musa Amadu was quoted to have refuted the rumour saying, “ we are not taking any Nollywood star to Brazil. There’s no truth in the agency report that you are telling me about. A Nollywood star visited me but he is my friend and it had nothing to do with the World Cup in Brazil.” he said.
Nine arrested over bloody clash in Ondo By Dayo Johnson Akure ETECTIVES in D Ondo have arrested nine members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) Ondo town branch and their rival National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) over a bloody clash. They are presently detained at the Police headquarters in Akure. Four persons including Vice-chairman of the RTEAN Alhaji Alimi Arowosola were seriously injured in the clash. Those injured are on admission at the emergency ward of the State Specialist Hospital in Ondo town. A source alleged that members of the NURTW led by a branch chairman of a unit attacked the other group within the premises of the Enuowa divisional police station in Ondo town at about 9 am. C M Y K
Our source alleged that the RTEAN members were in the police station to lodge a complaint about their vehicles which were vandalized by the members of the NURTW, at Awoyaya area on the outskirt of Ondo/Ore road in Ondo town. Saturday Vanguard was informed that the vehicles were reportedly seized following the refusal of the NURTW to allow members of the other group to carry passengers from Ondo town to Ore and Lagos state. The attackers allegedly came in two Hummer Toyota buses to unleash mayhem at the station and inflicted injuries on the union members. Dangerous weapons such as bottles, cudgels and sticks were freely used by the warring g r o u p s . The NURTW branch chairman of the union, Mr Dele Mallah declined comment.
Leaders of both unions have besieged the Enuowa police station in the town to explain to the Divisional Police Officer Ebenezer Adegalu the cause of the bloody clash while broken bottles and sticks littered the whole places. Following the clash in the police station, a patrol van of the Special Ant-robbery Squad (SARS) has been stationed at the police station with stern looking p o l i c e m e n . Nine members of the two drivers union have been arrested and taken to the appropriate section in Akure, the capital of Ondo State. Police Image Make r Wole Ogodo confirmed the clash but added that his office is yet to be properly briefed. Leaders of both groups traded blames on who the aggressor was. However, they called on the security operatives and the state government to investigate the crisis.

FG sued over refusal to reverse same-sex marriage law BY IKECHUKWU NNOCHIRI ABUJA—A United Kingdom based Nigerian, Mr. Teriah Joseph Ebah, has dragged the Federal Government to court, contending that the newly enacted same sex marriage law, is inconsistent with the provisions of sections 34 and 37 of the 1999 constitution, as amended. In a suit he filed before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, the applicant, is seeking an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the Nigerian government, whether by itself or by its officers, agents, servants or privies, from enforcing the provisions of Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2013,
particularly sections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the said Act. Among other things, he prayed the court to go ahead and determine, “Whether the provisions of the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2013, particularly sections 1(1) (a) & (b), (2) and 3, do not violate and contravene Nigeria citizens’ fundamental rights enshrined and protected in section 42(1)(a)(b) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, and Articles 2, 3(1) and (2), 19 and 28 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Right (Ratification and Enforcement) Act, Cap A9, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria,
2004.” He is further urging the high court to declare the law as unconstitutional, null and void, and also hold that its provisions are impediment constituting disabilities to Nigerian Citizens’ Funda-
mental Rights enshrined and protected in section 40 and 37 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Articles 6 and 10(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Meantime, Justice Abdul Kafarati has slated April 2 to commence hearing on the suit.

ngered by the al legation by the ruling People’s Democratic Party, that ravaging terrorism attacks in parts of the North were sponsored by the opposition APC to stop President Jonathan’s transformation agenda, Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, yesterday, challenged the PDP to provide evidence of its claim or shut up forever. Nyako, who is insisting that the President unjustly imposed emergency rule in his state for political expediency, warned the PDP to desist from making wild allegations against the opposition but to face the realities of its failure to address Nigeria’s rising challenges, including terrorism, which he described as a by-product of the ruling party’s 15year incompetent leadership of Nigeria. Nyako, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr. Ahmad Sajoh, accused the Presidency and the PDP of playing politics with the Boko Haram terrorists and using the attacks as an alibi for its failure to cater for the people in the affected areas of the north. The governor said: “It is too late for this administration, which has failed in all areas of human development index to begin to look for scapegoats in the opposition APC. “The Presidency and indeed the ruling party should ask themselves why in spite of the fact

The governor said it was alarming that the nation has been plunged into a mine-field under the leadership of the PDP, citing the recent release of the Report of the Judicial Commission of Enquiry into the Ombatse attack in Nasarawa State, which indicted some of its supporters. The governor said the silence of the Federal Government over the massive killings of its security personnel was an indication that it was not taking action to punish the perpetrators be-

ing down innocent Nigerians -women, children and the elderly in a way that defies all reason and logic, only summarizes a well considered agenda of national destabilization for a purely selfish political cause. We pointedly finger the opposition,” National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh had said. Meantime, about 24 hours after President Goodluck Jonathan warned that the Federal Government would no longer treat Boko Haram terrorists with kid gloves, suspected members of insurgents yesterday, launched fresh attacks in Borno State, killing two people along the Maiduguri - Damboa-
Biu federal highway. The terrorists reportedly slit the throats of two passengers along the road, before setting ablaze all the vehicles including a truck loaded with firew o o d . The incident took place around Mustafanari village in Konduga Local Government Area of the state, when some terrorists who were suspected to have emerged from one of their camps in the Sambisa forest, ambushed the motorists and the passengers. However, several passengers were said to be lucky as they escaped into the bush. The terrorists were said to have stolen some cash and other items which they fancied from some of the
abandoned vehicles before setting the vehicles a b l a z e . Mustafanari is a village located along the troubled road and about 40 kilometres drive from Maiduguri. Several passengers had been killed by terrorists who usually ambushed their vehicles. Just last week, four people suspected to be a driver and passengers were attacked and killed while on their way to Biu Council Area, while several others who sustained gunshots wounds were admitted at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, UMTH, receiving treatm e n t . When Saturday Vanguard visited Borno Express motor park located at the heart of Maiduguri, it was observed that there were less vehicles at the spot where passengers boarded Maiduguri to Biu vehicles for fear of being killed on the road, while the few ones waiting for passengers said, they will rather follow Damaturu road, instead of Damboa road which had remained a death trap for the past three weeks. The state Police Commissioner, Mr. Lawal Tanko denied any knowledge of the story when he was contacted on the telephone over the incident, but promised to find out and get back. ”I am not aware of any attack on the said road yesterday, but as you have called me, I will order my men to find out so that I will get back to you”. Tanko said.

President Goodluck Jonathan (C); Secretary to the Federal Government, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim (L) and Conference Chairman, Justice Idris Kutigi arrive at the national conference in Abuja
NATIONAL CONFERENCE:
More questions than answers Constitution also benefited from reports and recommendations arising from the 1994/1995 Constitutional Conference. ”Although not enshrined in the 1999 Constitution, the idea of the current Six GeoPolitical Zones that have become one of the avenues for equitable distribution of projects and public offices in Nigeria was also a product of Dialogue that emerged from the 1994/1995 Constitutional Conference. ”The 2005 National Political Reform Conference produced a number of key recommendations that were sent to the 5thAssembly, which were however not perfected. In 2010, I reasoned that the outstanding recommendations from the 2005 Conference needed to be revisited.” Soon after the inauguration, the committee immediately kick started, toured the zones where it collated the views from Nigerians, socio- cultural groups, associations, organised labour, the academia and all strata of the society on the form, shape, format, content and structure of the proposed National Conference. At the end of its three month exercise of brain-
,,
FTER weeks, months and years of shouts, in trigues, calls for the convocation of a National Conference to determine the future of the country, President Goodluck Jonathan as a prelude to the conference, Monday, 7th October, 2013 put in place a 13- member national Dialogue Advisory Committee with Senator Femi Okoruonmu as Chairman. Other members of the Advisory Committee were Prof. George Obiozor, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, Senator Khairat Gwadabe, Senator Timothy Adudu, Col. Tony Nyiam rtd, who was later dropped, Prof. Funke Adebayo, Dr. Mrs. Mairo Amshi; Dr. Abubakar Sadiq; Alhaji Dauda Birma, Mallam Buhari Bello, Mr. Tony Uranta and Dr. Akilu Indabawa as member and Secretary. Inaugurating the Committee, President Jonathan noted that he was sceptical in having another conference because there were already existing democratic structures that were products of the will of the people as against the backdrop of views by some Nigerians that there was no need for people to sit down and dialogue over the socio- political challenges facing the country. However, he pointed out that in democracy, leaders must respond with best available strategies as challenges emerge to ensure that the ship of state remains undeterred in its voyage. President Jonathan while inaugurating the Senator Femi Okoruonmu committee had said, “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let us remind ourselves of the gains from previous Conferences and Dialogues. The Conferences that were held before 1960 were designed to produce a political system and a roadmap to Nigeria’s independence. ”The Constitutional Conference of 1957 in ‘London, for example, effectively prepared Nigeria for Independence. The Eastern and Western regions were granted self- government in 1957, while the Northern region got its own in 1959. The Office of the Prime Minister was created and it was also decided that the Federal Legislature would be Bi- cameral. “Furthermore, the Constituent Assembly of 1978 gave us the 1979 Constitution and also created the current Presidential system with its attendant checks and balances and Fundamental Human Rights provisions. The 1999 Constitution we operate today, is a successor to the 1979 Constitution and records show that the 1999
Although not
enshrined in the 1999 Constitution, the idea of the current six geopolitical zones that have become one of the avenues for equitable distribution of projects and public offices in Nigeria was also a product of Dialogue that emerged from the 1994/1995 Constitutional Conference storming and cross fertilisation of ideas, the Okoruonmu’s Committee in January submitted its 69- page report to President Goodluck Jonathan. Part of the 38- point agenda set by the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue if we must have a virile and all embracing Conference were that delegates to the Conference
should note that issues that will divide Nigeria are nogo areas; Conference should be managed by a 13member secretariat under an Executive Secretary with two members from each geo-political zone. Majority of delegates should be elected directly on the principles of universal adult suffrage. Each Senatorial zone would send four elected delegates; each state government to nominate one delegate; FCT to nominate one delegate; President to nominate delegates for key interest groups and nominated delegates should not exceed one-third of total number of delegates. Other issues raised in the agenda set by the Advisory committee were that the Conference should hold for at least three months and not more than six months; Conference should hold between February and July 2014; President should send a bill to the National Assembly for an enabling law. Alternatively, President can convene conference via provisions of section 5 of 1999 Constitution. Emergence of delegates should be based on any of four options; Option A (Representation on the basis of equality of geo-political zones. This will give conference size of 349 delegates with each zone having 45 delegates); Option B (Repre-
sentation on the basis of senatorial districts, with each district producing three delegates. Total delegates will be 502 with 364 elected through Electoral College made of five electors from each local government area; Option C (Representation on the basis of equality of constituencies of House of Representatives with total delegates being 536)and Option D (Equality of senatorial districts with four delegates per senatorial district and total delegates size of 500 with 436 elected). Barely two months after the submission of the Report, President Jonathan in his determination to prove critics wrong, to shame his seeming detractors and to tell the world that he was ready for business nominated Retired Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi as chairman of the national Conference, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi as Vice Chairman and Dr. Valerie Azinge as Secretary, followed by the appointment of Dr. Akilu Indabawa as Assistant Secretary, Conference Proceedings; Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as Assistant Secretary, Finance and Administration and Mr. James Akpandem as Assistant Secretary, Media and Communication. As a follow up and in preparation of the Conference, the President rolled out 492 names as delegates. The list was made up of 37 Elder statesmen, one each from the thirty- six states and the Federal Capital Territory and nominated by the president; retired Military and Security Personnel from each of the Armed Forces, the Police, the State Security Services and the Nigeria Intelligence Agency; traditional rulers, two per zone and one from the FCT; retired Civil Servants, one from each of the geo- political zones and the FCT; NLC and TUC whose nomination must reflect the geo- political zones and gender balance; the organised Private sector with two nominations from NECA, MAN, NACCIMA, NESG; the Media, Professional bodies; women organisations; Youth Organisations, people with disability, among others. Some of the big names serving as delegates include the South South leader, Chief Edwin Clark; Dr. Tunji Braithwaite; Chief Ayo Adebanjo; Chief Richard Akinjide; Chief Olu Falae; Erelu Olusola Obada; General Ike Nwachukwu; Achike Udenwa; Chief Olusegun Osoba; Nduka Obaigbena; Chief Raymond Dokpesi; Senator Jim Nwobodo; Chief Mike Continues on page 11

President Jonathan on Monday, 17th March at 5.05 pm, formally inaugurated the National Conference at the National Judicial Institute, Jabi, Airport Road, Abuja, with a charge that as delegates, the interest of Nigeria must be above any other interest and they must be ready to re- launch Nigeria, just as he urged the delegates to engage in intense introspection about the political and socioeconomic challenges confronting the country, adding that the interest of Nigeria as one indivisible, stable and a united nation was not negotiable. President Jonathan pleaded with delegates that as citizens of the country, all must strive to do away with harbouring negative biases against one another, stressing that there must be no room for what he termed
A cross-section of delegates holding the office in trust for the people as sovereignty belongs to them, adding that their voices must be heard and factored into every decision taken on behalf of the citizens of Nigeria. As delegates settle down to work, the presidency insisted that there were no go areas as they must not touch on issues that could lead to the dismantling of Nigeria, but the President tasked the delegates to address issues relating to form of government, structures of government, devolution of powers, revenue sharing, resource control, state creation, state police and fiscal federalism, to indigeneship, gender equality and children’s rights, amongst others, adding that as Nigerians, they must be open- minded and work to achieve what was best for

As delegates settle down to work, the presidency insisted that there were no go areas as they must not touch on issues that could lead to the dismantling of Nigeria selfish considerations, divisive cleavages and ethnic jingoism, but only national interest and said that yesterday’s prejudices must die with yesterday. He urged delegates to patriotically articulate and synthesise the peoples’ thoughts, views and recommendations for a stronger, more united, peaceful and a politically stable Nigeria; focus strictly on the Nigerian agenda as well as ensure that the winner at the end of the day was Nigeria. President Jonathan who reiterated that he has no personal and hidden agenda in putting in place the National Conference, said that the Conference was about the people of Nigeria against the backdrop that elected public officers were
Nigeria. President Jonathan who started his speech at 4.46 pm and stopped 5.05 pm, however explained that the National Conference was not designed to usurp powers of the National Assembly, but to complement the legislature, adding that both the National Assembly and the State Houses of Assembly should speed up the Constitutional amendment process especially the Referendum aspect that would be required at the end of the National Conference. President Jonathan said, “I am delighted to welcome you all to the inauguration of this historic National
MOSOP Leader, Mr. Ledum Mitee (r) and other delegates. Conference which promises to be another significant landmark in our efforts to strengthen national unity and consolidate democratic governance in our beloved country. ”I also believe that this National Conference is coming at a very appropriate time. Having just celebrated the first centenary of our country, the most compelling task before us, as we move ahead and contemplate what our nation will be at the end of it’s second century, is to lay a much stronger foundation for faster development. ” This we can achieve by building a more inclusive national consensus on the structure and guiding principles of state that will guarantee our emergence as a more united, progressive and prosperous nation. In our history as a political entity, we have experienced highs and lows but have always forged ahead. To my mind, the fact that we have weathered all storms and continued with the mission of evolving a truly national identity signifies that we are going in the right direction. ”The strongest nations in the world today also went through their own formative stages; some for decades
and others for centuries. We must learn from them that nationhood will not happen overnight, especially given the circumstances of our birth as a nation. History also teaches that nationbuilding is a journey of dedication, commitment, diligence, perseverance and patriotic vision. To be successful, nation-builders must continually strive to evolve better and more inclusive societies in which every citizen is proud and committed.” President Jonathan continued, “ It is our expectation that participants in this conference will patriotically articulate and synthesize our peoples’ thoughts, views and recommendations for a stronger, more united, peaceful and politically stable Nigeria, forge the broadest possible national consensus in support of those recommendations, and strive to ensure that they are given the legal and constitutional backing to shape the present and the future of our beloved fatherland. ” In inaugurating this national conference today, we are not unmindful of the argument of those who say that we do not need such a conference since we already have an elected parliament
and an elected government in place. As cogent as that argument may sound, I have chosen to act on the sincere conviction that in the truly democratic nation we are striving to build, we must never ignore the loudly expressed views of the majority of ordinary Nigerians. “ I have heard that majority say, that we need to rebuild trust by involving them in the process of developing a guiding document of our national political relationships which is more acceptable to all sections of the country. I have heard our people say that we need to openly and frankly discuss our problems and seek acceptable solutions instead of allowing them to fester and remain sources of perennial conflict. “I have also heard them say that, as the elected representatives of our people, we must never arrogate to ourselves all knowledge and wisdom regarding the development of our country. “And I am in full agreement with our people. The power we hold is, without question, in trust for the people. Sovereignty belongs to the people. Their voices must be heard and factored into every decision we take on their behalf. “This National Conference is a very important avenue for the voices of our people to be heard. Our people have yearnings and desires that need to be discussed. Their representatives at this conference are neither usurping the role of the National Assembly nor the Executive. They are complementing us in our march towards a greater and stronger union. “Over the years, wellmeaning Nigerians have drawn attention to inadequacies in our current constitution. Some have described it as a militaryinspired document which does not take into full consideration the genuine desires and wishes of the people. “The phrase in the preamble that says “we, the people,” have been variously criticised as being misleading because, according to the critics, the constitution was not written by the people. There are also those who believe that the constitution is not our problem but the political will to faithfully implement it for the peace and progress of Nigeria. “While opinions on the matter can be as diverse as rain showers, I believe that irrespective of our personal views on the issue, no one can deny the fact that every constitution is a living document that needs to be Continues on page 16 C M Y K

Sexual predators on the prowl O
RDINARILY, rape is forcefully having sex with someone against her wish or will, especially using violence. Over 90% of predatory sex is perpetrated by males against females. To some extent, rape reflects the ambivalence, moral decadence, ethical bankruptcy, materialism, corrupt soul, widespread promiscuity and hypocrisy that have characterized Nigerians over the years. There is no age limit regarding rape as children, babies, adolescents, matured adults, mothers, grandmothers, and women of over 70 years are being raped or defiled recklessly. Rape, generally speaking, is an infringement on the rights of individuals, particularly children and could amount to gross violation of child rights. It is believed that there are 181 rape cases within six months in Lagos State alone. Compared to other states of the federation (36-
state structure and FCT Abuja), one can easily imagine the number of rape cases which in totality could be alarming. Recently, Edo State Police Command paraded 50 suspects for various criminal activities including being members of deadly secret cults, armed robbery and so on. Out of the 50 for an example, 12 were held for rape and defilement of underage children. Among them are suspects above 65 years who are to be arraigned in court. Victims of rape generally are female children hawking on the streets in towns, cities and villages who are often lured by predators or seized outrightly and taken into a room, sometimes uncompleted buildings and raped. Poverty and lack of access to basic education are some of the contributory factors to the unwarranted defilement of underage girls. Hawking has become a cultural trait in many communities whereby female children are given oranges, yams, cooked maize, groundnuts,

They could end up being lured into secret, quiet places or rooms and raped even by neigbours. Incidents of rape are not limited to children. Young women, married or single can be victims. overtaken by two youngmen and forced into a quiet secluded uncompleted building. They brandished sharp long knives and told me that if I make any noise, I will regret and therefore should co-operate with them. There was nothing I could do at that instance. No one was around and the place was extremely quiet. The two boys took me into the building and forcibly had sex with me one by one. “When they finished, they ran away and left me on the ground totally exhausted. I could not get up for 30 minutes. When I managed to get up, I went home to where I was staying with a girl friend ; wounded, sad and unhappy.” But she was unable to narrate the incident to her friend who noticed by my appearance that something was wrong. Defilement has taken a spiritual dimension also. A pastor in Olorunsogo, Abeokuta, Ogun State, 34, had carnal knowledge of a 20 year old church member. A charm was reportedly used on her after which she went into a trance as the pastor eventually had his way. Another pastor reportedly raped a girl allegedly to “cleanse her spirit of dirt,” according to the victim in an Abuja court where the pastor was standing trial: “I cannot remember the number of times that he raped me. Papa (pastor) told me it was a continuous deliverance and he had to sleep with me to clean the dirt inside me and cleanse my future.” There was another incident in Enugu in which two girls – aged 10 and 11 years were raped in one room by a 42 year old man. The two girls were defiled together, locked up n the room as the man engaged them in sex. Neighbours who suspected had to force the door open to rescue the victims who were already bleeding. Also in Calabar, Cross River State, two men – aged 27 and 24 years respectively, allegedly conspired to rape a 12-year old girl whom they have been admiring for some time. On her return from school on that fateful day, both men reportedly had sex with this girl. One of the men held her while the other performed the act. After the first person satisfied himself, he held her for his friend to do the same. The victim’s mouth was held to prevent her from shouting. When the girl reported the incident
It is believed that there are 181 rape cases within six months in Lagos State alone. Compared to other states of the federation (36state structure and FCT Abuja), one can easily imagine the number of rape cases which in totality could be alarming

Most rape victims don’t turn out as normal adults —Foluke Daramola BY JULIET EBIRIM & ADERONKE ADEYERI Nollywood Actress and Founder of the NonGovernmental Organisation, Action Against Rape in Africa (ARA) , Foluke Daramola-Salako shares her ordeal as a rape victim and the experience of other rape victims.

second marriage. In my first marriage, despite the fact that my ex – husband had his own issue and couldn’t help me, I was frigid and kept a lot of things to myself. When it happened, my mum told me to keep quiet, that such things are frowned at by the society. So I had it all bottled up inside me and carried it into marraige. Apparently, my first marriage was wrong from the onset. Eventually, when I came out, I had to see a psychiatrist and he told me that the first step to take is to talk about it. I’m about the only celebrated face in Nigeria who has come out to say,“this is what I’ve gone through”. The reason why I can talk about it is because I have an understanding husband. Some men will tell you not to go out and say such things. You have a Non- Governmental Organization (NGO) that is concerned with fighting rape in Africa, can you talk about it briefly? My foundation is called ARA, Action against Rape in Africa. It was inspired by the experience I had. I was deflowered by a rapist. As a celebrity, I feel if I am able to share my experience as a living example, it will help a lot of people out there. The foundation is

one that cuts across class, culture and tribe. I recently went for a symposium on gender issues and I shared my story with a lot of people. At the end of the programme, there were two parents whose daughters had gone through such at the hands of relatives. They went about in guilt, thinking of how to deal with it. It is said that a problem shared is half solved. In Africa, especially in Nigeria, a lot of rape victims feel they are the cause of what befell them. They think they inflicted the pain on themselves. In this kind of situation, we make them relax, talk to them and make them realise that

they are just victims and didn’t inflict the pain on themselves Can you share some of the ordeals rape victims you’ve encountered passed through? Ninety-five percent of rape victims in the world do not turn out right as adults. It’s either they are frigid, nymphomaniacs, lesbians and so on. And this is because, they don’t talk about it. This is a psychological problem that has to be addressed. Victims should seek psychological help. Most Nigerian marraiges are not working because most times, women have issues they don’t disclose during and before their marriages that often have negative consequences. Why do you think rape victims find it difficult to speak out? I feel it’s basically because of the stigma that goes with it. It’s pathetic that most people don’t want to share their experiences. Recently, when I shared my experience with the media, a lot of people called me to ask why I did that. A lot of people in high position went through this, but nobody is talking, that’s why it’s a big problem. So, I told my friends and family that I had to do what I did to help someone
out there. It was recently recorded that over 181 cases of rape occur in Lagos monthly, what do you think can be done to reduce this scourge? A lot of times, those things that we take for granted are the things that matter most. I’ve always said mothers should try to understand their children, whether male or female. Sometimes, you find that a young girl will be trying to convey a message to her mother, but she’s not listening. For instance, a relative might be abusing the child and the child might be trying to pass the message to the parents, but they are not listening, because they see the person to be harmless. We recently had a crisis two weeks ago where a four year old girl was being raped by a forty- four year old man. When it happened, they took the case to the police but the rapist wanted to sweep it under the carpet. He started harassing the mother of the child and even tried to bribe her with N100,000. Though the woman didn’t take the money, she just wanted to run away because she was being threatened and harassed. She was scared and wanted to keep it to herself. We waded into the matter, told her not to worry and our lawyer took over the situation. Right now, the case is in court. These things happen everyday and they are not being addressed properly. How can the government and law enforcement agencies help to tackle this problem? The police is not helping matters at all. Most times, they let the perpetrators of this injustice go scotfree. For a rape victim to summon the courage to report that she has been raped, that person ought to be given support, instead they are ridiculed, blamed and reprimanded for what has happened. If that person leaves there in shame, you’ll agree with me that the person is not going to go there or talk about it again. When a victim reports that she has been raped, you don’t have to make that person feel worse than she already is; you listen to the person and show her love and support. If we can come out to fight this, taking cognizance of the fact that it could happen to anyone - your wife, sister or mother, then the country will be better for it. A rapist should be made to face the law and be severely punished.
Sexual predators on the prowl with rising rape cases Continues from page 13 infection. The matter was reported to the police who took them to court for prosecution. It has been discovered that rapists were taking undue advantage of deaf girls to commit their heinous crime. According to a NAN report, a researcher, Dr. Oyeduni Arologun of the Department of Health Promotion and Education, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, in her research work titled “Sexual and Reproductive Health Needs of Deaf Girls: A case study of Ibadan,” revealed that many of the rapists of these deaf girls are their step fathers and other people well known to them. They experienced sexual, physical, and psychological violence like anyone else. When they are sexually violated, they cannot com-
plain. They don’t have the language to communicate and so most of the rape incidents go unreported to security agencies. The persons supposed to help them often do not understand sign language which is a means of communication of the deaf. Many of these deaf girls have been found to be HIV/AIDS positive when tested, because there are no intermediaries to interprete as deaf girls are not usually predisposed to disclose information to medical personnel. According to the research finding, deaf girls are special needs people and so efforts should be made to provide them with the necessary skills to have a sense of belonging. Security agencies have been urged to promptly arrest and prosecute rape victims. There are several men who defiled children for ritual purposes with the intention of
getting rich after sex with kids of ages between one year and two years. Some also believed having sexual intercourse with underaged children could cure them of the dreaded HIV/AIDS disease. These are strange things bordering on occultism which propel men to engage in weird sex acts. “Some men defile their own little daughters due to occult promptings. At the same time, they rape toddlers with the belief of getting wealthy or making money excessively. Many herbal doctors encouraged these unholy, immoral, incest-like behaviour,” said Meyiwa Green, a Sociologist. He added: “Many youngmen rape grandmothers who are between 70 and 80 years and such have become rampant in recent years. The society has lost its moral bearing because of materialism. We have to go back to God for forgiveness so as to avoid hell fire at the end of our journey here on earth. The iniquities are becoming too many.”

T
he dust is yet to settle on the suspension of the CBN Governor Mallam Lamido Sanusi. Until it does, one will never know just how wise the Presidency was in the unprecedented suspension of a CBN Governor three months before his tenure was due. For starters, the stock exchange reacted badly as foreign investors withdrew their funds. You can argue, if you are on the side of government, that these are never loyal friends to any country. But precisely because they are fair weather friends, they are usually good barometers of good government policies and decisions. The exchange rate also fell, prompting the need to withdraw over three billion dollars from our reserves just to stabilise our currency. These are not good signs. And the Economist, the respected British journal, says there will be more. Again, we can dismiss the journal as we usually do to unfavourable predictions and commentaries.
B
ut we can’t dismiss the niggling feeling that perhaps we were too sensitive and too hasty to dismiss the messenger because he was deemed voluble and indiscreet, rather than look at the message. (Maybe the message was too stark, too uncomfortable and too close to home). We also can’t dismiss, so easily, the notion that if we did get it wrong, there will be collateral damages not only to the economy, but to some people’s political and professional future. It is probably in this light that the BBC’s Will Ross asked the coordinating minister for the economy, Dr Ngozi Okojo-Iweala in an interview if she feared for her reputation given what is swirling around in the country generally—the prevalent corruption, the parlous state of the economy, and the leakages in NNPC which nobody seems to be able to do anything about. From where I sat, I thought it was a fair question. Obviously, Dr Okonjo-Iweala did not think so. She became belligerent as she said that Will Ross, a Briton, would not come to Nigeria to repair the economy. She went on to tell the interviewer— and the listening public— how she left a comfortable job at the World Bank to come home in order to contribute her quota to help her country. It was a sacrifice and a labour of love. How could her reputation be damaged by it? She concluded.
to look out for. This is where the layer of equanimity is peeled off to reveal the layer of raw, natural emotion. This is where good quotes come from. And precisely because of this, it is where anybody who is used to giving interviews tries to avoid. Simply put, this zone, where guards are down, reveals more than it hides.
J
ust because Dr Okonjo-Iweala violated the basic rule of interviews which is that you should never, ever lose your composure let alone your temper, she came across as impatient, temperamental and proud. Her reply also portrayed her as someone who has been worried by this question and has been unable to deal with it within herself. She must however realise that this sort of question must be asked, not only of her, but of anybody who has a reputation to protect and find themselves surrounded by sleaze. Now, let’s get back to her outbursts. She said she left a comfortable job to come home. That may be true, but I don’t exactly think she is wallowing in poverty here. I may be wrong, but I have never run into her at airports. She probably uses one of the many presidential jets, or at worst, a private jet to do her runs. This is just one of the many perks of office in Nigeria; one that the World Bank is unlikely to give her. She has the kind of security— financial and social—that is not extended to over 98% of her fellow Nigerians. She is also probably worth tons more now than she was worth at the World Bank. On top of it, she has the power to change lives for good or ill. That must be heady; even for a woman! And if she said she made a sacrifice to come home and become the de facto Prime Minister of Africa’s most populous country without the rigors of a coup or the ballot box, then it’s the kind of sacrifice all homo sapiensblack, white or yellow- will give anything to make.

r (Mrs) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; you are a privileged person doing a privileged job. Don’t whine about it or patronise us. You also have the skill and the knowledge to make a difference in our dear country and change the world’s perception of the black man when it comes to money and power. So go for it! You will have no one but yourself to blame if you allow your reputation to be tarnished. And as to how to handle press interviews, I will advice her, and anybody who has to give interviews often, to read Collin Powel’s book ‘It Worked For Me’. He devoted a chapter in it on how to handle press interviews.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE:
What Nigerians want Continues from page 11 revised and improved upon from time to time. The United States, which is the model democracy in the eyes of many, has amended its constitution 27 times since it was first adopted in 1787.” Barely twenty- four hours after the President inaugurated the National Conference, the Chairman, Justice Idris Kutigi on Tuesday convened the first session where he urged delegates to the National Conference to work as a team if the set goals for the conference and the country must be achieved, just as delegates were assured of fair hearing in the presentation of issues. The first meeting was informal as logistics, how to settle down to work, the environment, materials to work with, method of getting the allowance, among others were tabled, but Kutigi asked Delegates to use this week in acquainting themselves with the new environment, the National Judicial Institute, venue of the Conference, announcing that adjournment of sitting till Monday 10am to enable
personal or tribe or ethnic colouration or region; it is also hoped that delegates will remember that President said it was not about him and no personal agenda, but about Nigeria; it is also hoped that delegates have the opportunity to relaunch Nigeria and not to play to the gallery or just talk for talking sake or shout for shouting sake because you want your people to see you as garrulous, then use it as a vehicle to contest for House of Representatives, the Senate like most delegates to previous ones and panels like Oputa panel. As delegates settle down on Monday, it is hoped that they will remember what the former Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Florence Ita- Giwa said that most of the delegates were architect of Nigeria’s problems; it is hoped that delegates will remember that this is the time to correct past problems and mistakes; it is hoped that most delegates will note that this may be the last opportunity for them to help solve the problems of Nigeria especially considering the age of some persons

As delegates begin serious business on Monday with discussions on the President’s inaugural speech, it is hoped that they will remember the good counsel of Mr. President that Nigeria first and not anything personal or tribe or ethnic colouration or region.
delegates have enough time to study the various documents the secretariat provided them with which will give them deeper understanding and insight into the issues they will be deliberating on at the conference. But before the close of day on Tuesday, issues that will be expected as delegates reconvene on Monday reared their heads, with one of them as religion, that divisive and contentious matter that has for long pitched Nigerians against one another came up. As delegates begin serious business on Monday with discussions on the President’s inaugural speech, it is hoped that they will remember the good counsel of Mr. President that Nigeria first and not anything
and against the backdrop that students of history have been reading about them since after Nigeria’s Independence as being around the scene. Though they may still live for another twenty years, but their shock absorbers will be very weak then to participate in an event of this kind.
It is also hoped that some delegates will note that they have been recycled in many governments and they are still around. This is the time to help save Nigeria from its woes. It is hoped that as delegates begin the process of nation building and discussing issues, we do not have any other country to run to, it is hoped that delegates will note

that many Nigerians are suffering and may not have transport fare to travel from one village to another, but they can afford to do that through their private jets; it is hoped that delegates as they sit down for serious business would understand that amidst poverty in the land, government will spend over N7 billion on the Conference; it is hoped that delegates will reflect on what happened last Saturday where some young Nigerians in search for job died during the test organised by the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS.
As delegates settle down, issues of infrastructure, how the systems will work, marginalization of some sections of the country, issues of equality, issues of getting to administer a country like Nigeria and states by all irrespective of the area one comes from, issues of how power must rotate among the three Senatorial Districts of a state, among others should be on the top burner during the discourse. Delegates must be frank to themselves because minority groups will stand up for their rights in the affairs of the country, but we must respect the views of others. Groups like South South, South East, South West, North East, North West, North Central, Middle
Belt, Midwest, the Itsekiri, the Afenmais, the Banchamas, Moslems, Christians, Northern minorities, Southern Kadunas; the Idomas, Southern minorities, among others will express their views, their plights, predicaments, among other problems. At the conference, we expect to see the South South leader, Chief Edwin Clark spearhead the talk as he is to be supported by the leading South-South political leaders who already have a kind of working relationship with the SouthEast and South-West in realising their goals. Clark, former Vice President Alex Ekwueme and Rev. Emmanuel Gbonigi are pushing the position of the South South, South West and South East under the aegis, Southern Nigeria Peoples’ Assembly, SNPA, where they had before now listed a 31-point agenda for the national conference.
The group had listed the issues to include: the unity and indivisibility of Nigeria, structure of the federation, true federalism (devolution of powers), fiscal federalism, status of geopolitical zones, form of government and resource control. Others were local government issues, state creation, regional/state police and other internal security agencies, land
ture. Also on the group’s agenda are issues of federalised judiciary, corruption, anticorruption agencies, armed forces, single legislative list in the constitution, tricameral legislative system, role for traditional rulers, equal representation by geopolitical zones/ federal character principle, indigene/settler relationship, Bakassi peninsular as part of Nigeria, population and census, religion and secularism, tenure of government, immunity clause, gender equality and justiciability of fundamental objective and directive principles of state policy. As delegates begin, the major focus of the South-
East would be the demand for the creation of an additional state for the zone and the enthronement of justice and fair play in the management of the nation’s resources. South-West delegates will be involved in calling for the emergence of true federalism and a return to regional government as practised in the First Republic. The preponderance of opinion of the zone is hinged on the need to reconfigure the nation in a bid to offer all components of the state an opportunity of realising their full potential. Amidst the security challenges in the country, the South-West is set to be in the forefront of calling for state police to ensure the protection of lives and property, just as the north will also discuss the issue of security, the federal structure, control of the nation’s resources, among others. We watch as events unfold at the 2014 National Conference to know if the conference will take us there or back to where we are coming from. Till then.

I joined Nollywood to forget boy who broke my heart By AYO ONIKOYI
B
udding Nollywood actress, Princess Eze from Arondizogu in Imo State never planned to join the make-believe world. The Business Administration undergraduate of Lagos State University, who was born in Owerri and raised in Lagos, was told by a friend to try her hands in acting as a way of getting over her boyfriend who ditched her for another girl. That soon became a vocation, then a passion and now the beautiful Lasuite cannot imagine life without acting. According to her, the journey was anything but easy. Hear her story: I first came into Nollywood in 2011, after I broke up with my former boyfriend. A friend of mine sensed I was down emotionally and wanted to encourage me. He asked me to accompany him to an audition alongside some of his other friends . When we got there, they gave us scripts to read as well as rehearse. I wanted to drop the script but my friend asked me to give it a shot, telling me it would help me to get over the pain inflicted on me by my ex boyfriend. There and then, they cast me for a role. But after that, I went for more auditions but things were not as easy as that first time. Back then, I went for many auditions. In some, they would pick me but they would not call me for the job; and in some, they would call me but before I got there, they would have given the role to someone else. It was so discouraging that I had to stop going for auditions for a while and decided to face my study. I didn’t go back until I met Mr Kingsley Omoefe through a friend who decided to give me my first substantial role. I later joined a theatre group to sharpen my skills as an actress and returned finally in 2012 to begin again. My journey has been dogged with
many difficulties but I thank God I am beginning to find my foot in the industry. I have featured in some soaps like Yours Faithful; The Couples; Single Ladies and others. For home videos, I have featured in Pregnant Hawker;, Private Parts, Daddy Goes to School and BB Anointing, among others My impression of Nollywood generally, is that of a place filled with kings , queens , princes and princesses, a place for intelligent and creative people. For you to be successful as an actress, you must first of all, build a personality that is endearing to the people and you must be sound in English. You must also be open to learn, be humble, determined, intelligent and friendly. No doubt, there is sexual harassment in the industry and it is one of the reasons some actresses have not been able to gain any measure of prominence because they cannot play the game by those rules. We are all different from one another. What some people can take, others cannot take it. So, I always walk away whenever I come across such people. I believe there are still good and decent ones out there. So, I will take my time. In this industry, one has to be unique. Some of the things I believe are unique about me are ability to control my temper and my good nature. In addition, I have a good height, nice skin colour and good figure and I speak good English. I am also very intelligent and creative. As an actress, I can take up any role given to me. Just give me my script and I would bring the character to life. I can go as far as going nude, if my doing so, has a message to pass on to the society. But if it only for amoral reasons then count me out of it. As for having sex on set, I don’t think that is acting any more. I don’t think any actor in their right senses would do such. It is against our tradition. For going nude, yes, I can do that if I

Are the Ghanaian actors taking over Nollywood? G
hanaian actors like Jackie Appiah, Van Vicker, Majid Michel, Yvonne Nelson, John Dumelo, Nadia Buari, Yvonne Okoro amongst others have become household names in Nollywood, and Nigeria has become more like home to them. Is this a healthy development? Are the Ghanaians gradually taking over the Nigerian movie industry? Saturday Vanguard spoke with some Nollywood stars on this issue and these are their opinions.
Nigerians prefer foreign things!- Actor - Bob Manuel
I
t’s a sad reflection of Nigeria’s craze for something foreign, even if it’s from smaller countries around us. Those countries don’t reciprocate in kind, so in the end, we become fools! We really need to sit up both as a nation and as an industry (Nollywood).
The Ghanaians are catching up fast - Bose Arowosegbe, Actress
T
he Ghanians are really catching up with us fast. They learned from Nigerians with very good producers, directors and good crew members who left Nollywood to Ghana. The competition got so high, but we will still continue to be the best in Africa. They are still behind us. We are neighbours and they are equally good. A lot of good directors and producers are either from Nigeria or started from Nigeria,so they will sure want to have actors from both sides in the movies.

I
don’t think the Ghanaian actors are taking over, I believe we are all one, be it Nigerian, Ghanaian or Kenyan, we are all actors. And as an actor, you can be featured in any type of movie, be it Hollywood, Bollywood or Nollywood movies, as long as you are good and the producer believes you can give him the best. There shouldn’t be any discrimination!
The industry is big enough for everyone - Belinda Effah, Actress
I
don’t think so. The industry is big enough to accommodate everyone. It’s not a a problem, because I still get to play major roles alongside these Ghanaian actors.

his collaboration has helped the industry to grow. It’s easier for Nollywood to break into Ghana and Africa as a whole. Africans like partnership. A united Africa sells anyday, anytime. It’s been a great partnership so far. They’ve added colour to Nollywood and they’ve brought about healthy competition that has made the industry ( Nollywood) to wake up.

E
ver try on a pair of glasses you thought you really liked, but then take them off immediately you caught your reflection? Most likely, those shades were just the wrong shape for your face. With so many options out there, it’s not easy to decide what will look best on you. Getting sun glasses means being technical about face shapes to help you pick the right glasses for your look. Sunglasses for men are the best accessories to add flair and style to your look while shielding your eyes from the glare of the sun. You can also make a fashion statement and be a trendy guy around town. Sunglasses are necessary accessories both for men and women. They serve two purposes: protect your eyes and provide your clothing ensemble the perfect finishing touch without trying too hard. Here, the basic rule for the shape of your glasses is to figure out what your face is lacking, and get frames that provide it. If you have a very angular face with lots of lines and planes, you’ll need rounded glasses to add some curves there. If you have a soft face with curving features, you’ll do better in straight or angled glasses. That’s the basic paradigm.

A weekend with Honolulu There’s no doubt that if you have a good knowledge of cocktails and where you can get them, hanging out for a weekend will always be fun for you and your friends. There are literally thousands of recipes for cocktails and mixed drinks, but there are a select few that are universal to the entire drinking public. Cocktails typically contain one or more types of liquor along with several mixers such as fruit juice, honey, bitters, soda or cream.
•Gin fizz
Bloody Orange Maria A
Bloody Mary becomes a Bloody Maria when you swap tequila for vodka. Our twist here is cutting the tomato juice with crimson blood-orange juice. It turns what normally feels like a meal in a glass into a brighter, more refreshing drink. This class of cocktail is made up of two lime slices, for glass and garnish; flaky sea salt, such as Maldon, for glass; Ice three tablespoons; fresh blood-orange juice or regular orange juice, plus 1 twist from

This class of cocktail is prepared by: Running the cut side of 1 lime slice around the rim of a glass; dipping rim in salt. Fill glass with ice and add juices and tequila. Add hot sauce, stir once, and garnish with twist, pepper, and lime slices.

he Honolulu cocktail was one of the signature cocktails in 1930s Hollywood at the Brown Derby and it remains one of the best tropical gin cocktails. The menagerie of fruits in the drink likely led to the name and create a taste and feel of the islands, even if you're in Manhattan. It is a nicely designed drink and would be a great classic choice for those who like the fruitier drinks like those adorning many modern Martini menus. It is made up of, 2 ounces gin, 1/2 ounce pineapple juice, 1/2 ounce orange juice, 1/4 ounce lemon juice, 1/4 ounce simple syrup, dash of Angostura bitters, lemon spiral for garnish and, super-fine sugar for rimming. It is prepared when you rim a cocktail glass with sugar; pour the ingredients into a chilled cocktail shaker filled with ice; shake well; strain into the prepared glass and then garnish with a lemon twist.

28—SATURDAY Vanguard, MARCH 22, 2014 ho exactly, pre cisely, specifical ly, do you consid
er to be a quality guy? Figuring this out now doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be fluid and open to change, but it helps to at least start with some objective in mind. It’s time to set some standards and start learning to reject those guys who fall far below the bar. First, assume for a moment that you have found somebody who rings your bell, lights your fire and gets your motor running — all at the same time. How do you feel, knowing that this person is head-over-heels in love with you? Are you feeling a sense of belonging? A sense of acceptance? Are you feeling lucky, blessed and proud of yourself and of your partner? Do you feel peace, joy, security? Do you feel you have finally found your place in this world through this person with whom you are going to share your life? Those feelings are your real goal. So why go through the process of developing the Character of Him? Because those are the traits and qualities likely to create the feelings described above. So, while it’s important that you have a wish list, it’s equally important to remember that you’re actually looking for the character that will give you the feeling. Women should not let themselves be seduced by a man’s good looks. Your perfect match has to make you feel the way you want to feel. Physical attributes that seem so important in the beginning become superficial. Height, weight, job and all those sorts of things that may have attracted you to him initially and made your chest swell with pride when you walk into a party together will be at the bottom of the list. That’s because what you are looking for is the experience of you. And the things that will create this for you will be his values, personality style and interaction style, and the way he helps you to feel. Be mindful though that the 100 percent candidate doesn’t exist. Instead of wasting time searching for an exact match, look for the guy who is free of the dealbreakers and has 80 percent of what you do want in a partner. The other 20 percent you can grow. If the guy has 80 percent of what you want and potential to grow the extra 20 percent, you have found your match. Remember, life is a com promise. To figure out the kind of guy you want, go through the following lists and check off everything that you can
r e t te c a r ra a h c ch s Hi y a w g n o l a goes imagine as a desirable trait in your special someone. Don’t worry if your wish list seems too long. Check as many items as you desire. Think about you, your life and your potential targets as you go. Which qualities would get you all hot and bothered? Which ones will make your life easier? And which ones have you been looking for all along? What are you looking for in your man? Your preferences here should be made with full consideration of what would complement or compensate for your personality. Funny: He should be someone that makes you laugh out loud even when you’re having a bad day, and makes you lighten up when you are too serious. Serious: He shouldn’t be afraid to think or talk about the deeper issues in life. Seriousness should be important to avoid superficiality. When you need someone to resonate with you mentally and emotionally, the class clown should be the last person to be with.
ASK THE SEXPERT I have sex with my married girlfriend two to three times a month. She also has sex with her husband. Initially, we had unprotected sex, but when I ejaculate I wear a condom. A colourless liquid comes out of my penis during foreplay. My girlfriend is pregnant and she is confused as to whose baby it is. Please help, we are extremely worried? You are indulging in unsafe sex. The colourless liquid called the precum fluid can have sperms. Either men could have caused the pregnancy.
Women should not let themselves be seduced by a man’s good looks. Your perfect match has to make you feel the way you want to feel Leader: He must know how to take charge both at home and at work, so you’d feel safe knowing that if things get out of control, he can step in and make them right. Supportive: Does he boost your ego with plenty of praise and stands behind you no matter what? This is important if you like to run things so you’d not see yourself as a Lone Ranger. Intellectual: Can he participate in more esoteric discussions with you and others? This is important if you like to learn new
things from you partner. Emotional: He must feel deeply and can relate to you on more than an intellectual level. This is important if you have an active emotional life and need someone who understands this side of you. Street-smart: Does he have great social skills and is a real survivor. Will he make it in any circumstance? You’d need this either because you can be naïve sometimes and you’d like to have someone around who knows the score, or how it all works. Honest: He must be candid and forthright, doesn’t play games, even when it’s not easy such as telling you when you have food in my teeth and have had for days. Sensual: A true guy must bring out the sexual vixen in you. You’d need this if you are usually pretty calm in the sexual realm and need someone to stir up that side of you, or because you are so sensual that you tend to overpower partners who aren’t. Motivated: He must be driven to succeed in every aspect of his life. This is important because you deserve to live like a queen
I am a 25-year-old man. The number of times I masturbate has considerably reduced after I turned 20. Will this affect my marriage? Also when I was 15, I had sex with a 24-year-old woman. She started bleeding and I experienced pain in my penis. Can this lead to an HIV infection? Get over your anxiety. There is nothing wrong with you. Your married life will be fine too.
I am a 28-year-old married man. While having sex, I get excited only after fantasising about other women who are dominating in bed. I am unable to tell this to my wife. Is this normal? This is known as masochistic behaviour. Your wife is
and your kids like princes, not paupers. Stable: He should let you feel safe and comfortable because he is so solid. This is important if you are a free spirit and need someone to be the ground beneath your feet, or because you work hard to be reliable and can’t stand people who don’t reciproc a t e . Carefree: Does he help you escape from stress with his easygoing, go-with-the-flow attitude? This is great because life is too short to worry all the time. Spontaneous: He should be able to live on the edge, pick up and go on the spur of the moment. This is important if too much planning takes all the fun out of having a good time. Unpredictable: Does he keep you on your toes so that you never get bored? This is important because, even though you are quite structured, you shouldn’t get get stuck in a rut. Organized: He should be ready to take care of things like bills and makes sure everything that needs to get done is done. This is great if you are a little scatter brained sometimes. Responsible: Can he be relied upon to do what he says he will do? This is important if you need someone who can be an equal partner when it comes to doing the stuff that’s not fun as well as the stuff that is. Dangerous: You need someone that gives you intense emotions, huge ups and downs, and makes you feel that you are really alive. This is important or you’d be bored to death any other way.
your life partner, so tell her. The only other option you have is to continue your fantasy. My wife delivered two months ago and underwent tubectomy 20 days later. For how long should we abstain from sex? It’s best if you ask the doctor who operated on her. I think you can start immediately without any anxiety. Can pre-cum make a woman pregnant? It is very rare. That can only happen when a stray sperm wanders in at the wrong time.

The sexy singer in a recent interview on her kind of man said, “ When the right time comes, and the right time is when God will bring for me the right man. I cannot just give in to a man blindly without thinking of the long term consequences. I must look at his qualities keenly. Apart from being my husband, the man will be the father of my children. Getting a responsible man to connect with and who has respect for God and himself in this era is not an easy task. I want a man I will marry to be proud of me. He must show me love at all times; he must be Godfearing and hard working and creative in everything he does. My man must take me out to different places to have fun, not just at one particular joint every now and then,” she said.

You starred in the movie, Mr & Mrs; was it your first movie? Yes, it was my first movie. After Mr and Mrs, I have featured in two other movies. At the moment, I have a new script which I wouldn’t want to talk about now. How were you able to play the role of a housegirl where you had to sleep with your mistress’ husband? At first, I was very anxious about what people would say concerning the role I played in the movie. But then, it’s not all about the role, it’s about my job acting is my job. It’s something I am passionate about. I didn’t stumble into acting. It has always been my dream to be an actress. The movie required me to play that role as a housegirl. It doesn’t mean I am a housegirl in real life. So, I had no problem playing the role in my first movie. What was the reaction of your friends and family members when they saw the film? First and foremost, I got a negative reaction from my elder sister who is based in Ireland. She sent me a text message which told me that she was not really happy with me. But my other three sisters were proud of me. They encouraged me, and commended my skill as an actress. My mum didn’t want me to go into acting initially because she had this fear that actresses hardly get married. But when she realised that I have strong passion for the job, she had no choice than to allow me to follow my dream. My father has no problem with me. My friends are really happy for me. While playing the housegirl role, were you tempted to give in? Not really. The guy I was paired with is a married man. He isn’t even an actor. He was compelled to play the role after the person who was supposed to play the role did not show up. So, he had to play the role. He didn’t plan for it, and there was nothing intimate about it. It was just a 3-minute action, and something done in the presence of the cast and crew of the film. There was no dialogue. What was it you did that earned you the
role? It was shocking to me given the kind of movie it turned out to be. I went to a restaurant to eat, not knowing there was an audition going on there. I met a friend of mine, who thought I came for the audition. But when he realised I didn’t, he encouraged me to be part of the audition. However, after the audition, I went home and forgot about it. But one day, I got a text message, instructing that I should join other actors on set. That was it.
My mum didn’t want me to go into acting initially because she had this fear that actresses hardly get married
You have not had any bad experience so far? Not at all, I haven’t had any bad experience. I have featured in three movies, and I had a cool relationship with the producers I have worked with. I have never had any negative experience since I joined the industry. In the name of fame, most emerging actresses sleep their way to the top. Are you one of these

ertility is an unpredictable thing. It can begin to diminish at any time— usually much earlier than anticipated. Worse still, there are no tests that can guarantee someone who is fertile today will be fertile in a year, or two or 10. In several ramifications, the average couple is saturated with information regarding reproduction. As it turns out, many women (and men) don’t have much of a grip on the realities of fertility. While everyone knows something about child bearing, no one knows everything about the subject. Majority of women don’t even understand their own reproductive life cycles. The reason is not farfetched. Until now, there’s been no meaningful effort to disseminate this knowledge simply because no one seems to have seen the need. It has been almost completely assumed that producing offspring is a biological

If you find yourself consistently wishing you had hit the hay earlier but staying on track with a calming bedtime routine is virtually impossible for you, consider setting an alarm to go to bed regularly.
If the quiet reflection above isn’t your style, some simple breathing exercises may do the trick. Breathing deeply mimics how your body feels when it’s already relaxed, so after inhaling and exhaling for a few rounds, you just might find yourself feeling calmer.
Keep your bedroom cool and dark
A room that’s too hot and a room that’s too cold can both mess with your sleep. Aim for a midpoint. Even the most inconspicuous glow — like that from a digital alarm clock can disrupt good quality sleep. If you can’t seal up all the light sources in your room, consider using a comfortable eye-mask.
Power down an hour before bed
Dim the lights and turn off all your devices - smartphones, iPads, laptops, TVs, all of which belong outside the bedroom - about one hour before bedtime. Bright light is one of the biggest triggers to the brain that it’s time to be awake and alert, so start sending the opposite signal early.
Avoid heavy meals when it’s late
Your body isn’t meant to be
Take a hot bath
digesting while you sleep, so a big meal too close to bedtime may keep you up at night. Proteins are the worst culprits. If you have to eat late, opt for lighter meals.
Keep your bedroom quiet
Noises can easily be distracting to sleep. For snoring bed partners or blaring sirens outside your window that are slightly more difficult to avoid, try a handy pair of earplugs. But when your sleep haven is so silent you could hear a pin drop, every occasional bump in the night becomes that much more evident and disruptive. Exercise regularly but not at
bedtime Regular, vigorous exercise helps you get good sleep quality. Adding even just a few minutes of physical activity to your day can make a difference in your rest. However, especially in people with trouble sleeping, it is agood idea to exercise at least two hours before bedtime.
Avoid drinking liquids close to bedtime
Don’t go dehydrating yourself, but consider reducing water intake to a couple of hours before bedtime to save yourself middle-of-the-night trips to the rest room.
Cut caffeine
Your afternoon jolt stays in your system longer than you
might think. Experts recommended stopping intake of caffeine by early afternoon to guarantee it won’t keep you up in bed later.
Make sure your mattress fits
Lots of tossing and turning may be less about you and more about what you’re lying on. An uncomfortable mattress might the source of your sleepless nights. It’s important to recognise the signs that it’s time to buy a new one. Change your mattress every five to 10 years.
Try a new pillow
Dust mites might just love your pillows even more than you do and make it harder to sleep. You’ll also want to
A cozy soak raises your body temperature slightly. Then, when you hop out, you’ll cool down quickly, which mimics the natural drop in body temperature caused by the brain as it readies the body for sleep. A warm bath before bed seems to help people fall asleep more quickly, but also get better quality sleep.
Get out of bed if you really can’t sleep
If all else fails, get out of bed. Continuing to lie there only stresses you out more, making it even more difficult to nod off. Experts recommend getting out of bed to do something else — as long it’s relaxing and doesn’t involve bright light. Then, climb back into bed when you’re really tired.

H
aving a big belly has consequences beyond trouble squeezing into your pants. It’s detrimental to your health, even if you have a healthy body mass index (BMI), says a new international collaborative study. Men and women with large waist circumferences were more likely to die younger, and were more likely to die from illnesses such as heart disease, respiratory problems, and cancer after accounting for body mass index, smoking, alcohol use and physical activity. Researchers pooled data from 11 different cohort studies, including more than 600,000 people from around the world. They found that men with waists 43 inches or greater in circumference had a 50 percent higher mortality risk than men with waists less than 35 inches, and this translated to about a threeyear lower life expectancy after age 40. Women with a waist circumference of 37 inches or greater had about an 80 percent higher mortality risk than women with a waist circumference of 27 inches or less, and this translated to about a fiveyear lower life expectancy after age 40. Importantly, risk increased in a linear fashion such that for every 2 inches of greater

Large waist, poor health circumference, mortality risk went up about 7 percent in men and about 9 percent in women. Thus, there was not one natural “cutpoint” for waist circumference that could be used in the clinic, as risk increased across the spectrum of circumferences. Another key finding was that elevated mortality risk with increasing waist circumference was observed at all levels of BMI, even among people who had normal BMI levels. Because of the large size of this pooled study, researchers were able to clearly show the independent contribution of waist circumference after accounting for BMI. BMI is not a perfect measure, the researchers stated. It doesn’t discriminate lean mass from fat mass, and it also doesn’t say anything about where your weight is located. We worry about that because extra fat in your belly has a metabolic profile that is associated with diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.
Physicians need to consider both BMI and waist circumference as part of risk assessment for obesity-related premature mortality. The primary goal should be preventing both a high BMI and a large waist circumfer-
ence. For patients who have a large waist, trimming down even a few inches through exercise and diet - could have important health benefits.”
Do not keep your pregnancy a secret
T
he nausea had come on strong, even before the results of my first pregnancy test showed positive. I felt a catch in my throat when the fragrance of my hair cream wafted into the bedroom. A few days later, my breasts began to feel heavy and sting. I knew I was pregnant. It announced itself loudly. The symptoms were much more pronounced than with my first pregnancy. And as the symptoms strengthened, my love grew for my baby. About six weeks into the pregnancy, I woke up one morning and could finally take little tea. I thought the nausea was supposed to get worse. I pushed the anxiety away, but the knot never released. A few days later, I went to the doctor. After much examination, I was told that no baby was seen. My pregnancy was between me and my husband. So we pretended it never happened. Little did we know that we
were in for another problem. I respect any woman’s decision to keep her pregnancy or miscarriage a secret but I don’t think we should
feel ashamed if we decide to share the news with whomever we choose, whenever we choose. Weeks later, the symptoms
never seized and my stomach continues to swell. It was then I opened up to a nurse who advised I should see my doctor. Getting there, I was told that I needed a D & C to flush out the pregnancy completely and urgently. So I opted for a D & C, though it was painful but it saved my life and my womb for other pregnancies. Today, I have more children. Take a look around you. Chances are, if you’re sitting in a room with five women of childbearing age, one of them has had (or will have) a miscarriage. And if you are one of them, don’t be afraid to open up. You just might find comfort in the arms of any one of them.

Why I feel pity for today's school children--- Akinmeji
M
rs. Nike Akinmeji is a passionate Child Development Professional with over 10years experience working with kids. She is the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Green Oaks Kiddies Entertainment Limited, also known as Kiddies Kingdom. Her focus is on growth and development of children, creating an enabling environment to help children develop self direction, self motivation, creativity and problem solving skills needed for life long experience. In this interview with Saturday Vanguard , she advocates the need for school children to be given the opportunity to recreate. According to her, excess academic workload for school children tell on their social life and growth. Excerpts:
As a stakeholder in the education sector, who is involved in leisure for school children, how would you rate the tourism sector in Nigeria? Well, I would say that stakeholders like us in the sector are really trying to put things in place. For the sector to thrive, we in the edutainment sector of the tourism business need to do more. We have a lot of tourism sites in Nigeria. If we would take our time to manage these sites the way they should be managed; put people who know about tourism in charge, people who are committed, people who would introduce new innovations, you’d see that when these sites are well packaged, tourists from outside Nigeria will be encouraged to come in. If the
clock in the evening, you still see them on the road returning from schools. And I begin to ask, what time do they have to rest, what time do they have to study what has been taught in school before the next day? And then, it happens like this from Monday to Friday. Then on weekends that they are supposed to rest, lesson teachers come in. Even their parents who are supposed to encourage them to rest don’t because they don’t know how to recreate. Therefore, they pass it onto their children. Mind you, you can’t give what you don’t have. So, it’s on this premise that GOKEL stands. Our key initiative is to constantly create
I feel bitter when I see children setting out for school with bags on their backs, as early as 5 O’ clock and then, by 6 O’ clock in the evening, you still see them on the road returning from schools enabling environment is created, foreign investors would be encouraged to come in and invest in the Nigerian tourism sector. We have lots of tourist sites, but we must revive our maintenance culture. Nigeria must guard what it has because if we put in more efforts to the sector, in the next four to five years, we will get to the top. What does GOKEL stand for? GOKEL stands for Green Oaks Kiddies Entertainment Limited. Our playground is in Anthony Village here in Lagos State. Also known as Kiddies Kingdom, this is an edutainment outfit providing both educative and entertainment activities to children aged 1-10 years. Here, our approach is creating the right mix of educative programs with entertainment through play and fun. We have a leisure centre specially designed and equipped with various play equipment to help children play, interact, socialize, learn and celebrate. Why do you limit your services to kids? The reason is very clear. I feel pity for children of these days, because they don’t recreate. I feel bitter when I see children setting out for school with bags on their backs as early as 5 O’ clock and then, by 6 O’
an enabling environment of leisure to kids; to help kids develop self direction and self motivation; to help them discover and harness creative skills and to help them develop problem-solving skills through our various educative and entertainment programmes. You will agree with me that nowadays, children’s moral and social life are being affected negatively because they don’t recreate, and when they do, it’s the wrong thing they indulge in. As an edutainment outfit, particularly interested in children, what do you usually have in stock for them during festive periods and what makes yours special from others ?
Thank you. During Christmas, we make sure that parents and guardians do not bury their heads in worry over where to take their children for recreational activities. That is why we opened a Santa Claus Cantana where children are assured of being given a good taste. What makes our Santa special is that we believe in childhood memory. That’s why our slogan is giving memory to childhood. We so much cherish the memories of childhood, so that when they are adults, they could cast their minds back to what they enjoyed as recreational activities when they were growing up. And coming from the days of Leventis and Kingsway, my staff will tell you that yes, they enjoyed those days. That’s why we have it at the back of our mind that we must give these children the best. For those of them who have not been outside Nigeria, they will have the feel of what other children experience outside the country here. It might not be totally what they experience but at least, let them have a little feel of it. So, that’s why every year, we have different varieties of our Santa well packaged for children. We have the Summer Santa, the Winter Santa, the Cherry room, the Merger, before you now get to the Santa room itself. And every year, we have a theme for our Santa. When we started in 2011, we had Santa Town, in 2012 we had the Santa Village and last year, we had the Santa Tunnel. The design we had was a tunnel, and in it, we had various sites that students explored and learnt certain things about Christmas. So, it’s always a lot of fun for them.
SARTURDAY Vanguard, MARCH 22, 2014 — 35 Have you ever been heartbroken? I have been heart broken so many times. But for now, I need to put myself together.
d men me be
Nonye Ike
What will it cost to break a princess’ heart? Nothing, because a princess is also a human being. I am recognised as a princess when I am in my father’s kingdom. Even when I’m known as a princess, anybody who wants to break my heart will go ahead and break it. A crowned prince broke your heart? I don’t want to go into that now because that was my past. How was life on campus? I was really a tough girl during my university days. I didn’t have time to keep relationships. But my best friend on campus was a guy. In fact, most of my friends were men. I prefer to hangout with men than women. This is because I don’t like drama and gossips. When I hangout with men, I feel secured and I’m able to be myself without anybody being jealous or being envious of me. Are you avoiding men now because one broke your heart? I’m not running away from men. Actually, I just walked out of a relationship not quite long ago and I’m giving myself some time. I don’t want to jump into another relationship now. What led to break -up in the relationship?
actresses? You would want to do anything stupid when you don’t know what you want as a human being. If you know what you are doing, and you have the talent, you can never be a desperado, or sacrifice yourself to get what you want. This is because I know that whatever it takes, I will surely get there. Talent doesn’t hide. I know that I have the talent, and I’m not going to be a desperado or do anything stupid to hit the top. How do you describe yourself ? I’m an easy-going person. I’m reserved because of my background. I am a Princess, so I am not supposed to misbehave. I grew up reserved. My mother is a retired Secondary School Principal. Naturally, I am a no-nonsense person, but I respect people a lot. I am a very cheerful and serious person. I just have different personalities.
I am a very passionate person. I am highly emotional and when I fall in love, I fall in love 100 percent. That’s the reason I cannot jump into another relationship now I don’t think I would want to talk about it now. But things really changed. Why would you want to be in a relationship that you are not happy in? Happiness is the first thing anybody should think of in life. My happiness matters a lot to me. My happiness is what is going to make me excel in my acting career because when I am happy, I am able to read my script, understand it and interpret my role excellently. So, I wasn’t happy any more in that relationship because of some reasons I cannot mention here. Do you fall in love because the man is handsome, rich and famous? All these things you mentioned, I
like them, but then, I am a very passionate person. I am highly emotional and when I fall in love, I fall in love 100 percent. That’s the reason I cannot jump into another relationship now. If I were in love with the man because of money, fame or his looks, at least, I would have been able to find myself another man. It’s some months now since I broke up with my man. I am on my own because I am not looking for those things, though, they are good. I want someone who is going to make me happy. I don’t really want to know who you are,or what you are. I just want to love you for what you are, someone who will support my career and encourage me. I don’t like men who are dramatic. I like men who are easygoing and loving. Are you one of those actresses that like to sleep with married men? Why would you say this kind of thing to me? Of course, married men like me. They come around. On social media, they try to chat me up. But I usually tell you, I am a very reserved person. I am from a royal home and I carry that aura around me as a princess. I don’t want to defy myself. I understand tradition very well and it’s a wrong thing for a single girl to sleep with married men, even in Igbo tradition. Also, young men run after me. Even the ones that are not my age mates. It’s a normal thing for every woman, but the difference is making your own choice out of the lot. When I was in a relationship, everybody knew about it. I keep one man at a time. I am a one-man kind of girl. I don’t mess around because I have respect for myself. How are you faring without a man in your life? I have always been an independent woman even when I was in a relationship. I’m not the kind of girl that depends on her man for everything she needs. I shop for myself. Besides acting, I have other businesses I do. I am into interior decoration and I have my own clothing line which I am going to unveil very soon. I believe in working for myself and getting my own money. So, it’s not a big thing to stay without a man. I still feel the same, but the only thing I don’t feel again is someone I could call and send text to, saying ‘I love you too’ , and all that. Money wise, I am taking good care of myself. Even when I was in a relationship, it’s still the same thing. Do you think you can find love again in the industry? I told you earlier that I am not after money, fame or whatever. I just want a man in my life, no matter who he is, provided he has a sense of humour and is prepared to make me happy. I like men who are intelligent and smart. I don’t like dull people. You need to communicate with me and if you are not smart, you can’t communicate with me. I don’t care who the man is, whether he ‘s an actor, a musician, or anybody, as long as you possess the qualities I want in a man. I know when I see what I love, and I’m sure I will find love again.

Paris Saint-Germain are keen to lure Juventus midfielder, Pogba back to his native country and are ready to make him one of the highest paid footballers in the world. PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has met with his Juventus counterpart Andrea Agnelli again to discuss a potential move for Paul Pogba. The Ligue 1 champions have long been linked with the France international as they aim to further strengthen their squad this summer and Al-Khelaifi has now sounded out Agnelli in a bid to test the water over a summer transfer. Pogba has a contract with Juventus until the summer of 2016 and the Serie A giants are keen to extend the 20-yearold's stay at the club beyond the expiry date of his current deal. Fergie's man Moyes' time running out K
ey Manchester United board room figures have now turned against David Moyes, as the prospect of the manager getting sacked has been properly raised for the first time, club sources have said. The Glazer family owners are now more open to the idea of a change of manager, although they presently remain behind Moyes. Inspite of their 3-0 win over Olympiakos, in the Cahmpions League. The Glazers are said to have become very "nervous" about the nature of recent performances.
Some United officials now openly maintain that a managerial change is needed. Doubt, however, has increased at virtually every level of the club. Despite the poverty of recent perfor-
mances, sources state that one of the most influential factors now has been financial concerns. A number of recently signed-up sponsors and commercial partners have reportedly let it be known to the club that they are less than enthused with now being linked to failure, especially since they specifically came on board because of the reputation for extreme success. This is said to have most unnerved the hierarchy, and long-term damage to United as a "brand" could be the clinching point in any decision.
S
erie A has slowly been displaced from its position as one of the best leagues in Europe, but it could be about to receive a
boost. Over the past few years, match-fixing, poor attendances and the falling of giants such as AC Milan have all seen a once great league become rather boring. But Italian football may soon be on the rise again. Meet Elena Tambini, a 25-year-old referee and part-time model who is receiving her fair share of attention around the continent. Tambini currently officiates in the Italian minor leagues, but she could soon be on her way to Serie B and then Serie A and maybe even international football. Female officials at the highest level are incredibly rare. Assistant referee Sian Massey is currently the only active female official in the Premier League.

head of the global release of Lancelot Imasuen's bigbudget film,”Invasion 1897”, the crown Prince of Benin Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Eheneden Eradiauwa has concluded plans to pay a royal visit to the area where Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi was kept, and later, died while on exile in Calabar. This latest move by the heir apparent to the Benin throne is coming two months after Lancelot gathered friends, colleagues and the media in Lagos, to mark the centenary of the death of Oba Ovonramwen on January 14, 2014. Prince Eheneden Eradiauwa, whose pet project, Benin Royal Dynasty Trust, has endorsed “Invasion 1897”said, part of the reason he wants to visit Calabar is to meet with the traditional ruler of the area as well as to implore the community’s dance troupe to accompany him to the United States, where he has been invited to be the guest speaker at this year’s edition of the annual Arts and Culture Expo/ Award, holding in Atlanta. The dance troupe, according to him, will be expected to mount a cultural display at the 2-day event that will reflect the culture of the area that played host to Oba Ovonramwen while he was on exile in Calabar. On the film, the Crown Prince who was Nigeria’s former Ambassador to Italy, Norway and Angola said, besides “the Royal Dynasty Trust, “I will throw my weight behind that kind of film because it is telling the story of the Benin kingdom from the perspective that the international community ought to know about. The trust is endorsing the film.” Interestingly, “Invasion 1897” will premiere at the event, which will also showcase the culture heritage of the Benin kingdom. last year, the Benin monarch, Oba Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolopolo Erediauwa 1, endorsed the film as well as honoured Lancelot Imasuen with the 2013 Oba Erediauwa Excellence Award. The historical film highlights the restoration of the looted priceless ancient artifacts of the Benin kingdom, including the famous commemorative head and pendant of ivory mask representing Queen Idia (from court of Benin, 16th century) who was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. "Invasion 1897" parades an international cast, including famous British actors Rudolph Walker and Charles "Chucky" Venn and top Nollywood actors, Charles Inojie, Paul Obazele, Segun Arinze, Mike Omoriegbe as Oba Ovonrawmen and the late Justus Esiri in a cameo role

ollywood star-actress, Mercy Johnson-Okojie who was banned last year by the movie marketers has resumed work again. The embattled actress resumed work last week after resolving her differences with the marketers cum producers. Confirming the good news to HVP, Film and Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria,FVPMAN’s spokesman, Mr. Norbert Ajaegbu said, “The disagreement between producers/mar-
keters and Mercy Johnson finally ends following the FVPMAN’s national working committee meeting, held on Sunday, March 9, 2014. Mercy having diligently concluded all the jobs in dispute leaves us with no choice than to accept her apology. She is one wonderful personality we would not want to join issues with. She knows when to say sorry. She has concluded all that we asked her to do. Any insistence on penalizing her, will then infer prejudice. We have directed our members to resume all the previous
existing relationship with her. She has fully resumed all location activities without interruption. We are quite hopeful that circumstances such as the very one that caused the last disagreement will not repeat itself.” Movie marketers last year resolved to ban Mercy Johnson from acting for being too expensive. But interestingly, since she resumed work, insiders hinted that the actress has gotten not less than twelve scripts in the past one week

Getting kids into the kitchen
A
s a parent, you worry about your child and how he will take care of himself as an adult. You worry about your child’s health and his self reliance like knowing how to cook for himself. When your child can cook his meals, he has control over what enters his body and he's able to make better food decisions and go through with them. But, what do you do when you’re dealing with a child that just isn’t interested? There are many ways to get kids interested in cooking, you just have to play to their current interests. Catch his interest by playing cooking games The easiest way to get a child interested in cooking is to play games with them that involves food. Usually, the messier, the better when it comes to cooking games. Use kid friendly recipes. Show him how everything is done and give him a chance to do it himself even when you are afraid he might make mistakes. Also choose recipes that will produce things that he will actually want to eat. Noodles might be easy. (continues next week)

SATURDAY VANGUARD, MARCH 22, 2014—49 Aunty Julie, It seems like everyone my age (25) is progressing with their love life, and I havn’t even had my first kiss! I think I have a lot to offer, and I don’t know why things have ended up this way. I’m afraid I’m going to get so left behind that no one will want me. I like a few guys, but they hardly know I exist. It’s especially hard for me because I just moved to a new town a year ago and I still don’t know anyone very well. I’m really lonely and I’m getting desperate! Am I destined to be dateless forever? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Zainab, Ilorin Dear zainab, I know it isn’t easy to be 25 and it also isn’t easy to be the new kid on the block. I know that it seems everyone has someone but you but believe me, that just isn’t true. How quickly a woman gets a boyfriend has very little to do with what will happen to her
Am I smothering her?
I have never had a boyfriend
in the future. My guess is that moving to a new town put you back in your socialization a bit but don’t worry, you will catch up! No one is dateless forever! Some beautiful girls didn’t start dating till University largely because they just aren’t ready emotionally. As a matter of fact, it appears many girls rush into having boyfriends because they lack the emotional security to be on their own a little while longer. But don’t despair! Use this time to work on yourself and
make yourself the best self you can possibly be. Work on your self esteem and confidence. Do well in school,
develop some other interests, possibly a sport, musical instrument, or something that you can really excel at, make some good girl friends to hang out with, and be patient with yourself. If you feel insecure about your looks, join a gym or do whatever it takes to help your body image. Above all, even though
you feel lonely and sad, try to smile and say hi to people you wouldn’t ordinarily greet. That will make you feel more self assured. You would be surprised how others respond to people reaching out to them. High school is a painful time and has its ups and downs. Life really does get better, so don’t be so hard on yourself. Give yourself time and space to develop into someone that you yourself like! Others will notice and like you too.
I’m not feeling him Dear Julie, I have been dating a great guy for two months now. He is wonderful. Newly divorced, as am I, we have both found ourselves in the city. I have been separated for three years and have long since resolved any issues with my exhusband. I feel healthy and sane, but have been guarding my feelings after a married boyfriend returned to his wife and crushed me two years ago. I am a single parent with two children I am raising myself. Their father is about 500 miles away and sees them on occasions, but I carry the weight of everyday.
My problem is I like being with this guy, but can’t bring my heart to feel anything. It doesn’t switch, feel sad, miss him, feel happy, a n y t h i n g . I am like a cold fish. I have been in a self protective mode for so long that I don’t know how to feel anymore. Am I the only one who feels like this? I really like this guy and want to share my heart with him. How do I let myself love again? Is this going to be one of those wait it out and it will come
things? I feel sad that I cannot feel for him. Patricia, Kaduna Dear Patricia, You understand yourself well. You are definitely in pain over the way you have been treated by the men you have allowed to get close to you. You are still angry at your children’s father and because of his absence, have a tremendous amount of pressure: parenting, work, etc. Then, you chose another emotionally unavailable
man and he also has hurt y o u . Ask yourself: why do I choose men who can’t accept the responsibility of a relationship? Think about your own childhood and examine your unconscious attitudes about men in general and what they provide for the women in their lives. Tell the man you are with that you are still recovering from your own past and that you want to continue seeing him but that you need more time.
I can’t keep a woman
Aunty Julie, During the past year, I have had a rough time with women. I am 28 years old. At my first try, I blew after two dates. I made the mistake of telling her she could not date other guys. I got really serious with another soon but after we had our first “sexual encounter, she stopped calling and having interest. The next one really liked me but some how I messed up and she then had no interest in us being more than friends. Finally, the last girl I guess I an-
Father In Law “Mom, Dad, sit down. I have something very important to tell you,” said Samantha, upon her return home from college after graduation. “I met a guy who lives near the college that I really like and we decided we are going to get married!” “Oh Samantha! I am so happy for you!” gushed her Mom giving her a big hug, “I hope you two will be really happy together! I can’t wait to meet him!” “Tell us more about him” said her Dad, “does he have any money?” “Oh Dad! Is that all you men ever think about? That was the first question he asked me about you too!”
noyed with lack of trust. After I was told that we should only “be friends”, I again pursued her and we once again got back to dating. However, again we came back to the “just friends” scenario. Now there is a new girl my friend introduced me to. I have only seen her and have never talked to her and I feel with the right advice ,I can do right with her. My friend has told me I become too controlling with girls and that is why I always come
I suggest counseling to help you deal with past pain and to help you to examine the earlier choices you have made. Your heart is closed because you’ve been hurt and now you have to begin the process of healing so that you may love freely once again. My heart does go out to you and I know that you have it in you to do this. A caring counselor can do wonders. Let me know how it goes.
to “lets be friends” scenario. If she is indeed interested in me, I plan on asking her on a date and pursuing a relationship. Please tell me how I could do things different with this girl so that we perhaps can be more than “just friends”. Thank you for your time. bite of a barracuda. It wasn’t so much that he was a coward, or too timid to talk back, but you know how it is…let’s keep peace in the family. One day, the wife invited a group from the local women’s club to her house for tea and discussions. To make sure that her husband did not interrupt the goings-on, she ordered him into the closet and sternly told him to stay there until the last lady had left. During their bridge game, the ladies of the club spoke of the authority they wielded over respective husbands. Not to be outdone, the hostess informed the others that not only had she ordered her husband into the closet, but she could order him to come out, at will. “I’ll The Man Of The House A man was married to a woman whose com- prove it,” she boasted. “Bob!” she commanded, mands to her husband were as sharp as the “come out of that closet!” No response. “Bob!” she called in a louder voice, “come out of that closet this
Dear Julie, I’ve been seeing my girlfriend for two years now and I think things are gradually getting worse. I feel like I’m totally attached and can’t go a day without seeing her. But she feels overwhelmed by always being with me, and it is now becoming a real problem. I feel trapped, because I want to give her space, but I’m so stuck in the routine of being attached. It is very hard to stop seeing her everyday. What should I do? How do I get unattached? I know I should get out there and do things with my friends, but it is so much harder said than done. Jerry, Lagos Dear Jerry, Nothing turns a girl off more than a clingy guy. It makes them feel smothered and choked. While I’m glad you are aware of your negative pattern, you will have to take some extra special pains to break a very bad habit. It’s kind of like giving up smoking. You just have to not do it. Try to spend time with others, get some interests, concentrate on work/school and basically get a life that doesn’t always include her. Develop the areas of yourself that are special and which attracted her to you in the first place. Here’s a good start: try not calling her for three days. See what happens! Not only will you be proud of yourself, but she will probably be wondering what happened to you!
Would you like someone to do that to you? Probably not! If you halfway like this new girl, take it very slowly and play a little hard to get. Telling someone you want it to be exclusive before you actually fall in love will only drive them off. Honestly, the best way to handle this is to develop a friendship first and let it build into something more. If you like this new girl, date her but don’t try to “own” her. By doing that, you only betray a lack of self confidence and that is not appealing.
instant!” Nothing. “Bob!” she screamed at the top of her lungs, “I order you to get out of that closet this instant!” “No, I won’t!” came her husband’s muffled cry from inside the closet. “I’ll show you who’s boss in this house!” Domineering woman A cop pulled over a car and finds a young couple in the front seat. “Where’s your seat belt young man?” asked the cop. “Oh, I just took if off now when you were walking up to the car ”, responded the man. “No you didn’t!” exclaimed his wife, “you never wear your seat belt!”. A little taken aback, the cop asked to see his license. “Aw shucks!” cried the man, “I must have left it home!” “Yeah right!” screamed his wife, “You know it expired 3 months ago!” At a loss for words, the cop asked the woman “are you always so tough on him?!” “No” responded the young woman, “only when he had too much to drink!”

known as ‘slut shaming’ fuelled by blogging websites in which teenagers post vicious criticisms online, targeting peers they deem to be dressing to provocative or wearing too much make-up. “I was shocked and deeply upset to see my daughter being bullied like this —yet
coming though. Last year, she’d transformed almost overnight from a little girl into a tall adolescent with impressive boobs and an amazing figure — which she seems hell-bent on exposing as much as possible. As a result, it’s practically impossible for
her to leave the house whenever she’s on holidays without a fierce alteration. I would yell: ‘You’re not going out dressed like that, put more clothes on!’ She would stomp upstairs to change, before shoving the offending outfit into her bag— no doubt to put back on the moment I’ve vanished from sight. “I should have been firmer about her birthday outfit, but the problem is Joyce has become clever about getting her own way, and on her birthday, she had a few of her friends over helping her to get ready.
W
hen she eventually came down the stairs, she looked exactly like everything we all loathe about the crazy modern girl. She was wearing a really short and tight mini skirt I’d never seen before and a skimpy top with panels revealing her midriff. In her hand she was carrying a pair of 6in heels she was intending to slip on when her guests started arriving. Quite simply put, my daughter looked like she was far more sexually aware than she actually is. “Unfortunately, I didn’t have the courage, or the heart, to lecture her about the dangers of dressing this way just minutes before the start of her
long-awaited party and in front of her friends Instead, I reassured myself that she was just experimenting with fashion and that on this occasion — thank God — it was to be in a controlled environment where I would be present I hurriedly poured some wine down my throat, fixed a smile to my face and took a picture of her in her birthday outfit.

ooking at that picture now, I can see the expression on her face is part defiance, part uncertainty. She wanted my approval and for me to tell her she looked lovely (which I just couldn’t manage). At the same time, she was pretending she couldn’t care less what I thought.” Desperate for a younger person’s view, I discussed the barrage of Face-book attacks on teenagers with my daughter who told me most users of the network don’t see these vitriolic comments as bullying. “This is just normal amongst some youths these days,” she said as if wiser than her age. “Everyone is horrible to everyone else. I wouldn’t make rude comments about other people but there are girls out there who will because they know they can get away with it. It’s the same as the people who comment on your articles as a journalist. They are rude about you because they can remain anonymous. They’d never say half the stuff they put on your e-mail to your face.” I’ve now resolved not to lend her my computer again — l mean, just how much of you readers’ stuffs (which at times could be lurid) has she seen?

s your love life getting better? Are you working to keep that relationship alive? A strong, healthy relationship can be one of the best supports in your life. Good relationships improve all aspects of your life, strengthening your health, your mind, and your connections with others. However, if the relationship isn’t working, it can also be a tremendous drain. Relationships are an investment. The more you put in, the more you can get back. Everyone’s relationship is unique, and people come together for many different reasons. But there are some things that good relationships have in common. Knowing what a healthy relationship entails helps keep them meaningful, fulfilling and exciting in both happy times and sad times. What makes a healthy love relationship? Some relationships get stuck in peaceful coexistence, but without truly relating to each other and working together. While it may seem stable on the surface, lack of involvement and communication increases distance. When you need to talk about something important, the connection and understanding may no longer be there. Some couples talk things out quietly, while others may raise their voices and passionately disagree. The key in a strong relationship, though, is not to be fearful of conflict. You need to be safe to
express things that bother you without fear of retaliation, and be able to resolve conflict without humiliation, degradation or insisting on being right. No one person can meet all of our needs, and expecting too much from someone can put a lot of unhealthy pressure on a
Are you keeping your love alive? relationship. Having friends and outside interests not only strengthens your social network, but brings new insights and stimulation to the relationship, too. Honest, direct communication is a key part of any relationship. When both people feel comfortable expressing their needs, fears, and desires, trust and bonds are strengthened. Nonverbal cues—body language like eye contact, leaning forward or away, or touching someone’s arm are critical to communication. Touch is a fundamental part of human existence. Studies on infants have shown the importance of regular, loving touch and holding on brain development. These benefits do not end in childhood. Life without physical contact with others is a lonely life indeed. Studies have shown that affectionate touch actually boosts the body’s levels of oxytocin, a hormone that influences bonding
Be sensitive to what your partner likes. While touch is a key part of a healthy relationship, it’s important to take some time to find out what your partner really likes and attachment. In a committed relationship between two adult partners, physical intercourse is often a cornerstone of the relationship. However, intercourse should not be the only method of physical intimacy in a relationship. Regular, affectionate touch—holding hands, hugging,
Her ex keeps coming back Ques: I’m an 28 guy and I really like this lady. A couple of months ago, a friend of mine told me she knew a girl who she thought I would get along with a lot and wanted to set me up on a date with her. I told her I was not big on the whole blind date idea but I went along with it anyway. We met up one day for lunch and we clicked instantly. A couple of days later, I found out that she and her boyfriend had broken up a few days before we had met, but I didn’t think very much of it. She and I became very close and would see each other almost everyday. We both seemed to have a very good connection with one another because we both felt very comfortable and could open up completely with each other. However, I also found out a little later that her ex was the first guy to take her virginity and she was with him for a year which was the longest relationship
she has ever been in and she still had a bunch of feelings for him. During the time that we were seeing each other, her boyfriend would call her and always yell at her and act as though she was his property and she seemed to think that was natural. After about a month of us seeing each other everyday, she told me that she still has a lot of feelings for her ex and doesn’t want to give up on that. At that point, I was quite hurt but knew there was nothing I could say to change her mind. So, I left it at that. However that same day, she called me crying and told me that she had broken up with her boyfriend and this time it was for good. So I went and met up with her. So again the same thing happened where I would see her on a regular basis. And then her boyfriend started calling her again. But this time he would not yell at her but talk to her properly. And after a couple of weeks, she told me the

or kissing is equally important. While touch is a key part of a healthy relationship, it’s important to take some time to find out what your partner really likes. Unwanted touching or inappropriate overtures can make the other person tense up and retreat—exactly what you don’t want. You probably have fond memories of when you were first dating your loved one. Everything may have seemed new and exciting, and you may have spent hours just chatting together or coming up with new, exciting things to try. However, as time goes by, children, demanding jobs, long commutes, different hobbies and other obligations can make it hard to find time together. It’s critical for your relationship to make time for yourselves. If you don’t have quality time, communication and understanding will start to erode.
Ans: I know you are hurting but the answer is pretty clear cut. You got involved with this girl long before she was remotely ready to even consider having another relationship. One of the problems with being on the rebound is that unless the other person has completely finished with her ex, those old feelings for him are bound to resurface and get in the way of whatever the two of you had. Personally, I don’t doubt that the two of you had a connection, but she definitely is with him and not with you and the very best thing you can do is really tell yourself that she was never “yours” to begin with. Isn’t it ironic that most of us can connect more easily when someone isn’t entirely available? From what you have written, this girl is confused about her feelings and is with a very dominating guy who seems to be able to manipulate and control her and she likes it. As hard as it may be, you have to completely cut it off. Don’t try to call her or contact her again. She has moved on and so must you.

as any education in the world; a future when the high prices of food and fuel don’t undermine every family’s quality of life. “This is the future that we start to build here, today. This is why we have come from all parts of the nation. From the Northwest and Southeast; from the North Central and the South South; from the Northeast and Southwest. We have come from all regions of our great nation to show our unity; to show our love for our country; to show our commitment to each other and to building a New Nigeria. “And while we come together today as APC members to support the mission, principles and work of the APC, we come together first and foremost as Nigerians. “The future we envision, the future we will build together, is not just for one political party; it is not just for one region; it is not just for one community, it is for all Nigerians. And that future is a future of change. “Our nation longs for change and the APC is committed to leading a movement for change. Look no further than how the party was formed; we in this room are the products of the first ever merger of political parties in Nigerian history and many of those who devised and directed that merger will talk with us today, telling us how it happened and what it will mean for the nation.Today,we’re just not going to talk about change; we’re going to embody change. So today, not only will we get a look at our “Roadmap to a New Nigeria” in the afternoon, but this morning, we will start something maybe no other political party has ever done for a long time – we’ll present a Code of Ethics – a set of guiding principles that will be our common bond together and to the nation;

Fashola’s speech read: “This is a historic day not only for the APC but also for our nation. The work we begin today is the work that will build a New Nigeria; a future when there are jobs for everyone who wants to work; a future without leaders who deprive the very families they are supposed to protect; A future of peace and stability; a future when Nigeria can feed its families; a future when a Nigerian education is as good

It was a turnout of Nigerians who shared a belief that together we can build a New Nigeria. It was a turnout of people who have had enough of division in our country; people tired of the politicians who turn one group against another for their own political gain. We’ve all seen it. We all know how it works. We all know how demeaning it is to our nation. “Look around our country, what has division brought us? Has it brought us peace? Has it brought us prosperity? Has it brought the future we’ve wanted for our family, for our children. No, it hasn’t. We must come together. We must work together. We must live in peace together. believe our nation must be peaceful, just and secure. We believe that corruption must no longer be tolerated in any corner of our nation, not in political life and not in our business or civic affairs. We believe in investing in our people, because they are the most important assets of our nation. We believe every person deserves work that enables them to provide for their families, to contribute to the community and to have a favorable, quality of life. “This is what we believe. This is what brings us together. This is our mission, the mission of our party; the mission of our nation. No party in more than fifteen years has done what we’ll do today; publicly, and most importantly, together as a party, tell Nigeria what we believe in a meeting, not in a rally, not in the middle of a political campaign. But systematically and transparently – we want people to know what we stand for, we want people to know about the change we are offering; we want people to join us in building a New Nigeria: A nation of progress, a nation of hope, a nation of opportunity. A nation together. One Nigeria.36 States but one Nigeria;290 ethnic groups but one Nigeria;521 languages but one Nigeria. The new nation we want, the new Nigeria of our dreams. It is only possible through unity. It is only possible if we value each and every person and hold tight every child as our greatest asset. It is only possible if we respect every person’s choice of faith. It is only possible if we commit ourselves to one rule of law for everyone, if we commit ourselves to fairness and opportunity for all; if we commit ourselves to a strong system of government at the federal, state and local levels. It is only possible if we bridge our inequalities and if we put our nation back to work. “There cannot be true freedom when there are not enough jobs. There cannot be shared opportunity when there are not enough jobs. There cannot be peace and justice when there are not enough jobs. These are the promises we must make to each other, the promises we must make to our brothers and sisters across our nation from Sokoto to Rivers, from Borno to Oyo, from Adamawa to Lagos. These are the commitments that forge our mutual bond; these are our code of ethics. When times are tough, when our pathway becomes hard to navigate, when forces block our way forward, when challenges stand in the way of our vision, when hope seems just outside our grip, this set of principles must guide our path. “When people ask us, who we are, when people ask us, what we believe, when people ask us, what makes the APC different,we will tell them, we have a code of ethics. We will tell them we have a roadmap to the future. We will tell them that Nigeria is a great nation that has been misdirected. We will tell them that no nation, no people are more hard working but that we

Lagos set to pull down buildings to avert flooding BY OLASUNKANMI AKONI

agos State Government, as part of 2014 pre-raining season measure against flooding, late last month, ordered the immediate stoppage of further construction of structures by a developer at Osborne foreshore, Ikoyi area for encroaching on limitation area as well as violation of the state’s environmental law. It will be recalled that there was heavy long- hour rainfall on July 10, 2010 in Lagos that left in its wake, loss of lives and properties across the state, with women and children being the highest causalities. The major cause of the incident was later attributed to lack of adequate effective drainage system. The state government, also, late last year discovered that over 51 percent of wetland areas including mangrove swamps along the coast and freshwater swamps in the state had been encroached upon indiscriminately due to urbanization. According to the topography, the state, haboured about 78 percent water bodies of various sizes such as ocean, lagoon, lakes, streams, wetlands, among others. It was also discovered that most of the wetlands in the state had been severely bastardized as a result of anthropogenic activities, thus the need to sensitize residents on the importance of wetlands to the survival of humans with a view to returning it to its natural state. Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, described wetland as an area that provided valuable services to satisfy economic, social and ecological needs of local, national and international communities, adding that wetlands also played important role in flood assimilation as well as source of food, medicine, fuel and building materials to people living around them. He explained that the explosion of the state population vis-à-vis limited land size and the demand for housing and
industrial development had placed the wetlands in state on the verge of extinction. Similarly, a study carried out by the Building Nigeria’s Response to Climate Change (BNRCC) in partnership with the Nigerian Environmental Study/Action Team (NEST) on Lagos State Climate Change Adaptation Strategy, stated that in 1965, wetlands covered about 53 per cent of Lagos State, but as at 2003, this has been reduced to 2 per cent with great loss of biodiversity. marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six metres”. Agriculture, (fishing and cultivation of crops) had the highest land use with 55.9 percent occupancy, followed by residential with 31.2 percent, recreation 3.9 percent, transportation 2.6 percent, herb collection 2.6 percent, worship 2.6 percent and 1.3 percent for others (sand mining and trading). “The preservation of wetlands is a compulsory option for life and living. If we continue to destroy it, we compromise our future and endanger pos-
terity. If our forefathers had preserved it for us, we also have the sacred responsibility of conserving it for unborn children”, he said. Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, a Professor of Botany and Director of Academic Planning, University of Lagos, Akoka, described the relationship between wetlands and agriculture as resourceful and healthy. He posited that there should be strategic plan for bio-diversity management so as to achieve the partnership of wetlands and agriculture, stressing that the state government should put in place a policy that would protect wetlands in the state. Some of the wetlands still noticeable around the state includes: Majidun, Ipakodo, Owode, Ise, Ibeju-Lekki, Iba, Abia, Iworo-Ajido, Morogbo, Ajido, Isheri-Olofin among others. Rolling out strategy to combat flooding in 2014, Bello who disclosed the first edition of the monthly sanitation exercise in January, monitored in Ifelodun Local Council Development Area, LCDA, said that the strategies were already ongoing and would be intensified as the state moves closer to the rainy season. According to him, “We will do more of what we did last year in 2014 and some of the strategies include: prerainy season cleaning, mid-rainy season cleaning and post rainy season cleaning. “We will sustain this. Our plans are already on ground and we are ready to work towards it this year to ensure that Lagosians enjoy a flood free 2014.” He explained, “We are ready to start rolling. We have started the cleaning and we have deployed all the relevant agencies especially officials of the Emergency Flood Abatement Department, EFAD. You will begin to see some of them on the road. So we will intensify on that. He however urged residents “to tidy up their surroundings and do mild cleaning of your drainages. We need to be positive and mobilise ourselves to respond to our environmental chal-
lenges.” However, while conducting an on the spot assessment to various de-flooding projects, which was part of the ongoing inspection of drainage systems and canals in preparation for this year rainy season in the state, Bello, ordered immediate demolition of a developing structure built along a wetland foreshore on Osborne, Ikoyi, as well as under high tension cable of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN. According to Bello, the construction of the structure on drainage course, being a wetland, could lead to heavy flooding during high tide of the lagoon and rainfall. The commissioner said: “It is not only dangerous to the occupants of the estates around here, but also to residents and road users on the Lagos Island as it could cause serious flooding that could claim lives. It is a disaster in waiting, and we (the state government) will not allow it to happen. “Whenever, there is high in water level, this canal will not be able to absorb much water as it has been encroached upon, hence, the entire area is in danger. We will resist it by all means. It must be stopped.” When Bello approached the site manager of the construction company, (names-withheld), and discovered that the structure with the plan to build an estate was approved by the Federal Ministry of the Environment, he retorted: “How can this be approved by the federal government. If you look at that fence there, that is the limitation. This is a natural water way and this is a high tension capable passing through. How can anybody approve this.” Also speaking on the encroachment, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Engr, Muideen Akinsanya, explained: “From the lagoon to the foreshore, a limitation has been done in terms of the extent the federal government can develop in order to be able to facilitate the backlog for water to be able to recede without causing any havoc in Lagos and to residents. “This drainage is called Osborne, it is the one parallel to the expressway and as we all know, the expressway is deck compiled and the most important aspect of it is that the popular Dolphin and Ijeh canals is connected to Ijeh. So, if there is any back flow, it is here the water will depend on. So, if there is any obstruction here, we all know what will happen. So, this is a surprise to us and we will not allow this.”. It was however, learnt that officials of the Federal Ministry of the environment had denied knowledge of any approval given for such construction. Also, conducting another inspection in Ifako-Ijaiye Area, the Special adviser to the Governor on Environment, Dr. Taofik Folami, decried the level at which canals and drainages were being subjected to by residents, as most of the places visited showed blocked and abandoned drainage projects that needed quick intervention or else flood will be inevitable in the event of slightest rainfall. At Orimolade Street off Yaya Abatan Road, Ifko-jaiye, Folami ordered an immediate stoppage of a building that had reached roofing stage as it was built on canal alignment. One of the community leaders, Alhaji Olayiwola Salami, accused the contractor of abandoning the drainage project which allowed the developer to build along the course of the drainage.

he above titled piece written several weeks ago basically captured the effect and transformation that living in this country can trigger in any individual no matter how refined and was inspired by a friend’s totally ‘out of character ’ reaction to a particular situation. My friend, an Afro-American returnee was gracious enough to explain his reaction... I thought it worthy of sharing...perhaps we can all gain insight. Enjoy. “...I do not think it takes years for the base nature inherent in all of us (especially diaspora returnees) to surface. It is not a slowly developing reaction, but many times a spontaneous and angry response to events and situations that one simultaneously finds so unexpected, unsettling, surreal, and unnerving. In short, situations that you have probably not had to confront in years or which you’ve long pushed to the deepest recesses of your mind because of the ‘civilized’ climes one may have become conditioned by. Immediately upon one’s return, you are faced with mayhem, madness, and mindless chaos. The response is sudden, rapid, and I am not proud to say, sometimes as crass as the irritating situation you are confronted with. Where does one begin? Is it policemen, bank security guards, immigration and customs officials and a whole range of public officials, who instead of doing the work they’ve been hired to do, have perfected the art of groveling, begging and sycophancy? You are not used to having your senses

I have been domiciled for 25 years, expected to hear a simple, courteous, and complimentary “thank you for your business.” Instead, I was caught off guard by the female cashier who said since I looked famous, I should “do what celebrities normally do.” I asked, “and that would be?” Without batting an eyelid she said, “drop something for the girls.” I don’t know what I found more offensive — her rudeness or her brazen but yet casual request.

that a truck pusher was trying ever so gingerly to meander through the corner of the Alausa and Agidingbi intersection in Ikeja with his ‘omolanke.’ A lorry driver comes up behind him and even though it is obvious there is only enough space for the poor truck pusher and his omolanke, the driver throws caution to the wind and proceeds to take the corner at the same time. All he needed to do was wait for 5 seconds. But no,

International Women’s Day (2) daughters only are sulking and mourning, what do they expect childless couples to do? Three, why do we take vows during marriage to accept all children lovingly from God knowing that we will have issues with female children if there are no male children? Four, if having male children means so much to you, why not spend time in acquiring the needed knowledge, and patiently exercising the discipline needed, in order to successfully preselect the sex of your babies? Five, if God were to grant our wishes and we all start having only or mainly male children where will the females they will marry come from? hat I have found out is that we are very chauvinistic. Forget about the “daddy ’s girl” stuff you see or hear about. “Daddy ’s girl” is only sweet when daddy also has sons who make him feel complete. About 99.9 per cent of the men who have daughters only will change the situation if given the opportunity. Some have gone ahead to either marry more wives or have children from other women. Others with Rhino-skin simply hauled defiance at a chauvinistic society and moved on with their lives. Yet others only keep their cool because they cannot handle the disruptions and fallout of their actions, not that they are happy having daughters only. A friend who has three daughters once narrated how her husband hit the roof when a family friend suggested a recipe for having male children to them. He advised that their legs should face east, west, south, or is it north; during their conjugal act (there is no nonsense you do not hear when people think you need help). The husband claimed to be satisfied with his “three angels.” If he was, why glare at the friend with such a laughable proposition? Why not laugh it off? I had a pre-marriage class of about 50 participants two Sundays ago. I asked the men, especially, how many will be contented having only female children? Not a single person responded! I have come across only one man who seemed genuinely contented with his daughters. “I’m done with baby making,” he told me, with an air of finality after three daughters. Now, I have some posers. One, we are a very religious people and all the major religions accept that there is heaven and hell: the joy of the heavenly kingdom is so much, we are told, that our lives on earth pale into insignificance in comparison, while the torment of hell is so much that people do not have time to think about what they left behind on earth. If this is true why do we bother about perpetuating a family name when it means nothing to us when we are gone, heaven or hell? Two, while these couples who have

with her. She said she does not even know when her ovulation occurs and she is well educated. She has five daughters. Even those who have the knowledge and know how to apply it sometimes misfire due to impatience and indiscipline. You know this thing called sexual urge can bring out the worst in a man. That is why a famous writer said that when a man gets an erection, his brain goes on recess. Not to worry, it is all part of God’s plan to perpetuate humanity. There must be some form of equilibrium between the population of males and females; if not, mankind is in trouble. We live in a society where women

men. That is why even though he gave couples the knowledge and power to determine the sex of their children; he made it common sense that is not common. That is why a gynecologist in whose hospital my friend’s first son was born was surprised to hear that they naturally preselected his sex. Even though she studied reproduction and theoretically knows about it more than my friend does, she probably did not believe in preselecting, or tried it and it did not work out. All her children are girls and I suspect that it is not by choice. Another friend of mine behaved as if I was speaking Greek when I was discussing ovulation and natural family planning
are disadvantaged. This discrimination is probably responsible for the aggression we experience with some women. They are just unnecessarily difficult. In offices, they drive fear into subordinates and all, especially men, who cross their path; on the road, they will not give way even when you have the right of way. They are fighting against the odds, swimming against the tide of a society that sees them as inferior and expects them to prove otherwise. I work in the same office with my wife. Even though I am no longer part of the day to day running of the business, some people still prefer to talk “man to man” with me. Sometimes women are their worst
his ego, stupidity, or both, gets in the way. Instead, he forces his lorry through the narrow space, his back wheel completely crushes the omolanke, and the hapless truck pusher escapes with his life, just by a whisker. As if that was not bad enough, the driver looks out of his window, ignores the damage and simply drives off. This would never happen in many seemingly civilized parts of the world. But not in Nigeria. The size and ‘importance’ of the driver’s lorry simply trumps the truck pusher and his omolanke. Consequently, when I caught up with the lorry driver, my response to his blatant callousness took me by surprise. “Where did that come from?” I would later ask myself. Ours is a society where perceived might is right. Ours is a society where the thugs and goons of Government Minister’s, Governors, and yes the occasional pastor, terrorizes other drivers and pedestrians with whips and the cacophony of their sirens even when it is all too evident that traffic has come to a complete standstill. Nigeria has a way of getting to you. No wonder heart attacks and strokes are at all time high for 40 - 50 something men and women. Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad to be back home in spite of the craziness that is Nigeria. However, I daily pray that I not lose my sanity in the process and that the Lord delivers me from my own susceptibility to ugliness. May God help us all.” enemies. When an aunt of mine who wanted my father to marry a second wife could not use the absence of a male child to justify her request, she simply told my father that sleeping with only one woman leads to impotency. When I was growing up the chief protagonists of female genital mutilation were women. They called it circumcision and will readily point to women of a particular ethnic group they claimed were very promiscuous and unfaithful to their husbands because they were not circumcised; so they have unlimited libido and insatiable appetite for sex. A female banker, who pleaded with her female boss to take female bankers’ place of residence into consideration when carrying out transfers, got this reply: “ you can choose between your husband and your job.” `She lives about 70 kilometers from her branch and travels through a traffic-infested route, so she leaves home before 5am and gets back between 10:30pm and midnight every working day! How many women who have daughters only are truly happy and contented? Isn’t it sisters who are in the forefront of prodding their only brothers to marry a second wife who will give them boys “so that the family name will not die.” These are educated women, who studied biology in secondary school level, and know that biologically it is the man who determines the sex of a baby. For them the sex of a baby has become a matter of luck and the wife in the house is not lucky. Women need to help women a lot more. I know things are changing and improving, but a lot of minds are still in prison. For me, it is really a battle of the mind. What we see is a fixation of our mindsets. The theme of this year ’s Women’s Day is EQUALITY FOR WOMEN IS PROGRESS FOR ALL. Agreed but my interest is not really in equality but equity, more like giving to Caesar what is Caesar ’s and to God what belongs to God. This makes more sense to me due to the natural circumstances of men and women. Men’s and women’s needs are simply different.

very employer wants to employ the best hands to achieve organizational goals, but not all of them know how to source for skillful staff in our today skill deficient work force. There are enormous benefits that can accrue, directly or indirectly to an organization by employing people with disability. Disabled people are twice as likely to be unemployed as non-disabled people, and it not because they are all lazy benefit scroungers, but because there are myths and misconceptions preventing the inclusion of people with disabilities in the workforce. For example, the cost of employing a person with a disability; in terms of possible workplace adjustments, the impact on their compensation and sick leave, the belief that people with disability will take up too much time to manage, the fear of other people in the workplace doing or saying the wrong thing, etc are some of these misconceptions.“The difference people find when dignity and independence. trustworthy, have good work ethic, also have a positive attitude like can-do spirit and are willing to go the extra mile…. Employing disabled people can open up new opportunities and improve market share. Good customer service requires people to think creatively about the needs of all their customers. Those with direct experience of living with a disability provide an invaluable perspective. This could be in the front line as customer service staff, signaling to
clients that disabled people are welcome and that their needs will be met. People with disability are a resource of abilities, and a pool of willpower —they are real economical and social actors who can stimulate a wide range of interest, and even proffer solutions to problems in order to improve productivity.
E
mploying disabled people makes good business sense, the benefits of which includes: attracting and retaining the best of the talent pool, including latent talent, improving customer service, strengthening workplace morale and productivity, being a good corporate citizen, complying with legislative requirements and meeting international standards. The truth is, to possess a competitive and effective
workplace, employers need to ensure they recruit the best person for the job while retaining and developing them. And emphasis should be placed on the disabled workers' skills and not their disability. If a section of people are excluded from the job market for reasons that do not relate to their ability to do the job, workplaces will inevitably miss out on skills, talent and energy. Learning to respond creatively to life’s challenges means many disabled people develop good problemsolving skills, flexible and innovative ways of approaching issues, as well as determination and focus. Yet, despite these positive qualities and work records at the disposal of prospective employers, the percentage of disabled people in the workforce is still largely insignificant, this and the perceived fact that the disabled people in the country, aged between 20-50 years have the highest unemployment rate of any population group in Nigeria; this is a very sad statistics. These talents and skills wasting as a result of lack of job opportunity could help grow our Gross Domestic Products (GDP), businesses will grow and the economy will thrive.

Partnering Asian economy would help Nigerian business environment —LATUNDE
Abdulai Latunde, Chief Executive Officer, Crystal Productions; an integrated media, events and marketing consulting and productions outfit based in Lagos. The company was established in 2000 for the sole purpose of revolutionalising the Below the Line (BTL) industry in Nigeria and this “we are doing and it has earned us the acronym of being referred to as the “BTL Gurus”. In this interview with Saturday Vanguard Business, he foresaw the benefits of Nigeria partnering Asian economies and this is one of the reasons his company is bringing into the country the trade and industry promotion agency from Hong Kong to create a trade relationship with Nigeria. Excerpts: Your company is partnering a trade delegation in Hong Kong that is coming to Nigeria, what is the essence of the partnership and what does Nigeria stand to gain? We represent a number of international organizations, one of which is Roller Signs Global and Hong Kong Trade Development Council happens to be one of our esteemed clients. They are the trade and industry promotion agency of the Hong Kong government. They are also the big-
gest organisers of Trade events in Asia, making them a vital resource and sourcing platform for companies in the region. They also organise such events globally, one of which is to hold in Lagos on the 1st of April, 2014; Where members of the Nigerian business community will be able to have one on one interactions with a potpourri of Hong Kong business owners for a no fee business matching and seminar. More so, it is going to serve as an opener to new business opportunity to Nigerian business community as it attracts huge benefits to business environment in Nigeria. Again, such trade relationship would definitely help grow our economy as unemployment is reduced at the end of it all. Who are your targetted audience in this trade programme? The purpose of the event is to merge players in the Fast Moving Consumer (FMCG) and consumer goods industry with A class manufacturing and trading companies from Hong Kong who, using their knowledge of the vast Chinese market, can provide world class quality products to their teeming consumers and also forging trade alliances that will benefit both parties
and equivocally boost both economies. The delegates are major players in the areas of building materials, hair extensions, cosmetics, household appliances, Latunde Contemporary Chinese Medicine, etc. These items everybody is in need of and with our population here is going to a good market. Our targetted audience are those honest Nigerian business men and women who can afford the terms. Is it the first time of this programme in Nigeria? The maiden edition of this event was held in 2012 and this sequel is a result of the unprecedented success of that event. We had a delegation of 22 Hong Kong business at that event and recorded a turn out of over 400 Nigerian based business persons that graced the event. We also had the presence of notable dig-
nitaries at the event as well. It was a good business session. Nigerians were able to interact with these foreigners who had the interest of establishing a business relationship with Nigeria. Those who participated in the maiden edition are the ones benefiting it today. What do you think could be the challenges of this kind of trade interactions? We don’t foresee much of a challenge as we are prepared for all possible contingencies and are taking adequate precautions to ensure a hitch free event. That is why we make use of our webside to control things: www.hk2asia.com
World Water Day: Sustainable Water-Energy solutions take centre stage The importance of water and energy will dominate discussions across the globe today, as the world celebrates yet another World Water Day as it has done since 1993 following a declaration by the United Nations the year before. The theme for this year’s celebration is Water and Energy and expectedly, the various discourses will attempt to explore the interconnectedness between water and energy, and trace how the linkages can impact both the economic and social lives of people across the world, as well as impact a sustainable environment in general. According to the objectives set out for the celebration by the United Nations (UN), identifying policy formulation, approaches and solutions to water-energy issues can achieve greater economic and social impacts. One of the objectives is to identify relevant stakeholders in the water-energy nexus and actively engage them with a view to further developing the water-energy linkages. Focusing this much energy and attention on water and energy is understandable. It is known that water is very essential to human survival. Energy is also inevitable if clean, healthy water must be delivered to households far and near. Against this backdrop, it is then worrisome that even with the pre-eminence of water, many of the people of the world still lack access to clean drinkable water just as it is with renewable energy whether for household or commercial uses. “The World Economic Forum has identified the Water-Food-Energy Nexus as a risk where a rapidly rising and urbanizing global population is putting unsustainable pressures on resources. Demand for water, food and energy is expected to rise by 30-50% in the next two decades,” noted Dominic Waughray, Senior Director and Head of Environmental Initiatives, World Economic Forum. The water problem in Nigeria, our correspondent found out, is no longer limited to the rural areas. Many urban settlements lack access to clean water while a great number of them depend on private boreholes or hawkers for water to cater for their daily chores and water needs. This has further exposed a greater number of people to water borne diseases. Rather than lamenting the seemingly gloomy picture, the way to go certainly is to
borrow a leaf from the Canadian example. In a demonstration of rare foresight, the Canadian government initiated The Canadian Water Summit in 2010 to unite leaders, experts and stakeholders with a view to surmounting water-related challenges by creating partnerships between business, government and the public. The 2013 edition of the summit held in Calgary, Alberta focused primarily on the Water-Food-Energy Nexus that connects us all and according to the Luncheon Keynote speaker “recognises that water is the only medium through which major crises can be addressed. Decisions affecting water are made without realizing the importance and role of water. Trade offs are generally political decisions. The elements of the nexus are important. It is not just a part of the nexus, it is the nexus.” That the summit held in Calgary, Alberta is instructive. The province is rich in oil and gas. Alberta is also known for its crop and livestock production. As for water, Southern Alberta is one of the driest in the country. A major energy and food exporter, Alberta is primed for this sort of gathering to explore the risks and opportunities that come with growth and limited water which is a challenge faced by countless cities across the globe. To solve Nigeria’s water problem, taking learning from the Canadian experience, may just lie in the partnership between business, government and the public. But then, in a country where businesses are allegedly groaning under the yoke of multiple taxations, it is expedient to be cautious in calling on private businesses to spearhead the partnership between governments, business and the public in the charge to solve the country’s water challenge. Yet, this may not be totally out of order. A few businesses are openly doing so. Guinness Nigeria Plc is one. The company is in fact making commendable statement with its long standing commitment to helping communities solve their water problem by providing them with mini water works through its
Water of Lifeplatform. Beneficiary communities are spread across the different geo-political zones of the country. They include, Ona Ara Local Government area of Oyo State; Lantoro, Abeokuta in Ogun State; Mararaba, Nassarawa State, Agoi Ibami, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State; Ijora Badia and Mafoluku areas of Lagos State. Other States with beneficiary communities include Abia, Edo, Delta and Kaduna States. The Corporate Relations Director, Guinness Nigeria, Sesan Sobowale underscored the company’s commitment towards provision of water through the Water of Life platform during the commissioning of the Agoi Ibami Mini Water Works Project. According to Sobowale, “Access to safe water is a global concern.
There are about 1 billion people globally living without or with poor access to potable water. Of this figure, 400 million live in Africa, including Nigeria. For this reason, the provision of potable water to communities in Nigeria is an integral part of Guinness Nigeria corporate citizenship agenda. The construction of mini water works such as this, under our ‘Water of Life’ programme is part of Guinness Nigeria’s contribution to resolving this global problem in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals to ‘halve the number of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation by 2015’. To date we have completed water projects in over 15 states of the federation serving over a million people in households across the nation.
Owing to poor maintenance culture in Nigeria, an expert and Principal Consultant, Codub Services Limited, Mr. Chidi Umeano, has advised all and sundry the need for regular maintenance of infrastructure if the country must develop to attract foreign investors thereby reducing unemployment. Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos recently, Umeano said whatever infrastructure built by both government and private organisations should be given proper and regular maintenance done by the professional consultants. “In addition, Nigerians generally do not have the right attitude towards cultivating good maintenance culture as seen in the western world and some other black nations. There are so many structures abroad that have been in existence for ages and still functioning very well. The bottom line is that there is absolutely need for maintenance for a period of five years or there about,” he said. He stressed that as part of efforts to promote maintenance culture among Nigerians and for a better future hope, his company is organising the 3rd An-
rica from March 31 to April 1, 2014 in Lagos. According to Umeano, the event will discuss more on how costs can be reduced, improved safety, increased profitability through effective asset management and maintenance for industry leaders, practitioners and investors respectively. Speaking on business sustenance, Umeano affirmed that there is need for policy to be made but that most importantly is implementation, which is lacking in the country and advised that chief executives of industries and agencies should not be afraid of training those under them because it would help in maintenance and sustainability when they are no longer there. “We shouldn’t be afraid of training those under us to take over from us when we die or live office. They have experience and we should stop the idea of our children taking over though, nothing is wrong with that but the question is, do they have the capability to do so?” he asked.

Anambra:
Thrills, fanfare as Obiano takes oath of office BY VINCENT UJUMADU, Awka
B
Y every standard, the swear ing in of Chief Willie Obiano and Dr. Nkem Okeke as governor and deputy governor of Anambra State respectively on Monday, March 17, 2014 was a carnival. The mammoth crowd that witnessed the ceremony was an indication of the acceptance of the duo by the people of Anambra State who believe that going by the pedigree of the two men, there is every hope that they would take the state to the next level. Enthusiastic crowd started trouping into the famous Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka as early as 8 am and by the time the ceremony started at about 2 pm, the entire square and its environs were filled to capacity by spectators, most of whom were witnessing such an event for the first time. Visitors from outside the state were so much that at a stage, the masters of ceremony for the event had to be making appeals to every Anambra indigene occupying a seat to vacate same to ensure that visitors from other parts of the country and abroad were properly seated. It was also time for brisk business for vendors of all kinds, including photographers who framed hundreds of Governor Obiano’s pictures which they sold at the venue. Despite the apparent inconveniences suffered by the people, most of them still danced, shed tears of joy and thanked God for eventually ensuring the return of stability in Anambra politics after a long period of political rascality fuelled by the infamous political godfathers. Reason for the way the people felt was not far –fetched because it was the first time such an event took place in the Anambra State, as the state had never witnessed a situation where an outgoing governor peacefully handed over to his successor. For instance, after 13 years of military rule from 1966, the second republic began in 1979 with Chief Jim Nwobodo as the first civilian governor of the old Anambra State. Nwobodo could not be re-elected and the manner in which Chief Christian Onoh was sworn in at the old Governor ’s Lodge in Enugu less than one hour after the court declared him winner of the 1983 election showed the type of political acrimony that existed between them. After another eight –year period of military rule, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife was elected governor in 1991 and with another coup, Ezeife could not hand over to anybody. For the fourth republic which began in 1999, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju was
elected and the circumstances that surrounded the way the ruling PDP which denied him ticket for second tenure did not provide a conducive environment for him to hand over as expected to Dr. Chris Ngige who was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. When Chief Peter Obi recovered his mandate from Ngige in 2006 after three years in court, he too was not handed over the reigns of power. So, the joy of the people knew no bounds when Obi, the former governor and Obiano, the man taking over from him, drove into the arena for a proper handover. Obi, after inspecting a guard of honour mounted by the police, made a valedictory speech in which he expressed happiness that Anambra had returned to what it should be. Describing Governor Obiano as lucky, the former governor recalled that after his swearing in 2006, there were no office for him to move into and no official car for him, adding

Your clamour for continuity in Anambra State as captured in your slogans “from Agulu to Aguleri” and “from Obi to Obiano,” has finally been fulfilled that his successor was lucky to have them in place. As Obi was speaking, Obiano’s bullet –proof SUV, with accompanying back-up vehicles, were lined up in one part of the Ekwueme Square. He also said that Obiano assumed office at a time the state was financially stable and with no indebtedness to any financial institution, whether local or international. Dressed in a well cut suit with tie to match, Governor Obiano, in his speech, thanked the people of Anambra State for voting him and his deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke in to serve them and promised that they would not disappoint them, having realized their expectations. Reading from his eight- page address, Obiano said: “Beloved Anambrarians, with humility, I stand before you today, to accept this historic responsibility that you have given to me to serve. Our great leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, advised Ndigbo that only wise political

choices would ensure their survival as a nation within a nation. I am happy that you heeded that advice. “I wish to assure you that you made a wise choice when you voted me and Dr. Nkem Okeke as your governor and deputy governor. Not only that, in voting for our great party, the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, you once again listened to the wise advice of the great American Civil Rights leader, Dr Martin Luther King Jnr, that; ‘We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.’ “Let me quickly say that the occasion we have today is not a celebration of the victory of one party over another, but the triumph of the human will over the challenges that make democracy a reluctant seed to grow in Africa.” Going down memory lane, the new governor recalled that about 10 years ago, the situation in Anambra State was so appalling that Anambra’s famous son and writer, the late Professor Chinua Achebe referred to it as a place where a small clique of renegades had turned into a “bankrupt and lawless fiefdom.” He said further: “To the glory of God, the tables turned against enemies of Anambra when our great
leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu built a new political ark for our people and gave us a fighting chance in the ever-threatening flood of Nigeria’s political climate. Today, our story is different. “After eight years of a remarkable leadership under the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), our narrative has changed from the story of near-bankruptcy to that of the only state in the federation that hosts Nigeria’s first indigenous automobile manufacturing plant. Yes, it is a thing of pride to know that our brother, Dr Innocent Chukwuma has launched Nigeria into a new industrial orbit by fulfilling the country’s dream of indigenous automobile manufacturing with Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Limited, Nnewi. The story of Innoson is the story of courage and vision. It is the narrative of the New Anambra! “Slowly but steadily, we are regaining our self-belief. We are reminding ourselves that a people who astonished the world with their ingenuity and resourcefulness in wartime can lend a weighty hand to efforts to remake our world in peace-time. “Indeed, the time has come to prove Continues on pg 57

Anambra: Thrills, fanfare as Obiano takes oath of office
Obiano's Inauguration
Continues from pg 56 to ourselves that the entrepreneurial spirit for which our people are known all over the world can take firm roots at home; that together as one, we can be masters of our own house! Fellow citizens, under my administration, we have no choice than to decide whether we are truly the sons and daughters of our fathers and true heirs to their long history of pioneering excellence! “At this juncture, I pray you to join me in thanking our brother, Mr. Peter Obi for the excellent job he has done in Anambra State. Similarly, we must not forget to thank the ebullient chairman of our great party, Chief Victor Umeh for providing the vision and stability that made it possible for APGA to deliver on its campaign promises to our people. “We must also thank our great party men and women who worked night and day to actualize the victory we are celebrating here today. My greatest gratitude however goes to Anambra people, some of whom broke party loyalties and climbed over narrow interests to cast their votes according to their conscience. I salute your courage! Your clamour for continuity in Anambra State as captured in your slogans “from Agulu to Aguleri” and “from Obi to Obiano,” has finally been fulfilled! This victory belongs to you all. “A time comes in history when the ebb and flow of life makes extraordinary demands on a generation of people. Now, the natural question that you may want to ask is; what plans do you have for us? Going into the priority areas of his
administration, Obiano continued: “We shall aggressively address the challenge of power supply with the proposed citing of ultra-modern Independent Power Plants (IPP) in the three industrial hubs in the state; specifically, in Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka. When fully operational, these plants will generate enough electricity to power the entrepreneurial dreams of our people. “In the area of security, Anambra will be different under my watch. Not only shall we redraft the operational manual of the entire security apparatchik of Anambra State to ensure a lightning-quick response,
that fully reflects the essence of our people will be addressed by my administration. We shall re-design and re-model Awka to meet the structural and aesthetic requirements of a 21st century city that we can all be proud of. We shall also faithfully implement the master plans for Onitsha and Nnewi.” The governor also spoke on the four pillars on which his administration would anchor namely: aggressive mechanized agriculture; oil and gas; trade and commerce; and industrialization, which he described as four pillars of the Anambra wheel of development.
,,
The governor also spoke on the four pillars on which his administration would anchor namely, aggressive mechanized agriculture, oil and gas, trade and commerce and industrialization, which he described as four pillars of the Anambra wheel of development
we shall also re-orient our people to see that every citizen has a role to play in the security of our communities. The concept of community policing or what is better known as the Vigilante Groups, has worked well in Anambra State. “The next challenge however is to re-train, re-equip and refocus them to meet the dynamics of our time. Along the same line, we will strengthen the Police and other law enforcement agencies in the state to enhance their efficiency and response rate to distress calls. “Your clamour for a capital city
He said further: “The remarkable thing about this blueprint is that it is centred on the family. When we create jobs and boost the earnings of workers, we are strengthening the family. When we subsidize education and revolutionize healthcare delivery in the state, the family is the ultimate beneficiary. When we secure our communities and build new estates with first class infrastructure, we reinvigorate the family. All over the world, the role of the family as the first point of civilization is fully acknowledged. Sadly, today, we are too driven by narrow
pursuits to build strong families and stronger communities. “Beloved Anambrarians, I would urge you to also spare a thought on one thing that has held down this state from the full realization of its manifest destiny for years. Fellow citizens, the greatest challenge that we face as a people is the challenge of fostering peace and brotherhood amongst ourselves. “Over the years, we have allowed narrow interests to put a knife on the things that held us together and today, we can no longer act as one. Our land yearns for healing! It is our collective responsibility to heal this land with love! That is why we have started this movement; a social hurricane that will sweep through our towns and villages, through the nooks and crannies of Igbo land and through the Igbo Diaspora. We are calling on everyone to rethink and re-engage our heritage, our history, our families and our future. “There comes a time in history when a generation plagued by uncertainties and doubts must grind to a halt to take a hard look at itself in the mirror and the time to do that is now! . “The hard question we must ask ourselves is; how well have we fared as a people with a political future? The South Eastern Nigeria is the only region which does not have a dominant political party. Today, APGA is the only political party in Nigeria whose geographical coverage has yet to match its inherent potential. The time has come to reinvigorate the party and reclaim all the states in the South East and South and the rest of Nigeria. “To do this; we must climb over the recriminations of the past to build new bridges of understanding across Nigeria. If our ancestors sacrificed so much to create Nigeria, we must not sacrifice any less to rebuild this country. I have no doubt whatsoever that our future as a people is guaranteed in Nigeria”. Extending an olive branch to his political opponents who contested for the position with him, namely, Senator Chris Ngige, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, Comrade Tony Nwoye and others, Obiano appealed to them not let the ideologies that polarize the polity deny the people the full benefits of democracy, urging them to join hands with him in brotherhood and love to create a bold new world for everybody in the state. Already, the governor has started to assemble his team with the appointment of Mr. Oseloka Obaze, who also served former Governor Peter Obi as the new Secretary to the State Government, SSG; Professor Joseph Asike, a professor of philosophy at Howard University in the United States of America, USA, as the Chief of Staff and Mr. Willie Nwokoye as the principal officer to the governor. As the euphoria of the emergence of Obiano as governor of Anambra State continues, one institution whose present and past students are holding their heads high is Christ the King College, CKC, Onitsha. By sheer coincidence, the former governor, Peter Obi, the new governor, Willie Obiano and the SSG, Oseloka Obaze, are all old boys of the college. At the swearing in ceremony, the old students of the college were there in large numberto lend support to their mates who had made their alma mater proud.

‘I want QQQ boobs!’ M
other of six who’s ‘proud to be plastic’ vows to defy doctors — and her family—to DOUBLE her LLL breasts.
After 12 breast augmentations which took Lacey Wildd from a 32AA to a LLL size, you might think that the 45-year-old single mother of six
might want to call it a day. But the reality TV star wants to defy the advice of doctors and the pleas of her children to go under the knife once more and DOUBLE in size her already huge breasts. Viewers of the TLC show My Strange Addiction will see Wildd being turned down for more breast surgery by a plastic surgeon who warns that it will ‘destroy’ her chest. However, she is undeterred and vows to seek out a surgeon who will carry out the surgery in spite of the risks involved. Wildd’s cartoon figure and outlandish dress sense means that she turns heads wherever she goes. The huge weight of her chest — each breast weighing 21 pounds — means that
she has to prop pillows underneath her while driving, can barely run and only uses the back burners on her stove in case she burns her breasts while cooking. But she declares: ‘I’m proud to be plastic.’ However the cosmetic surgeon she approaches during the programme refuses to carry out the operation. He says that he carries out thousands of breast implants each years and ‘I’ve never seen implants this big.’ He tells her:‘It’s dangerous and it’s not worth it. I don’t think you should do this. This will destroy your chest forever. I don’t think anyone would feel comfortable with doing this procedure.’ But Wildd is not going to give up on her dream and eventually fits a surgeon who agrees to carry out the procedure.‘I’m dead cert on getting the surgery regardless of what everyone says.’ However, she does admit that she sometimes misses her old body. ‘There are days I do think I’d like to be the old Paula,’ she admits. ‘But do I regret it? Absolutely not.’

His daughter and victim Heather Orr tracked Hertel down to a bar he was running after seeing a news article about her grandfather being arrested. Hertel sobbed an apology to his daughter, Heather Orr at his sentencing in an Ohio court. Mrs Orr, 31, told the court: ‘I love my dad because he’s my dad but he hurt me more than anyone could imagine’. She was told by the authorities she was molested from aged three until 18. Her husband Daniel Orr told the court his wife ‘had lost her childhood’ and begged the judge to send Hertel away for a long time. Hertel sentenced to up to 95 years in prison and will not be up for parole for 20 years. Outside of the courtroom Mrs Orr told NBC4: ‘I want to give a face and a name to women, I want them to stand up and say this is not right what is happening to children and women who are abused.’

resh fears for Colombian pres ident’s health after he appears to wet himself during election speech. Questions about Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos’ health have been raised after he appeared to wet himself during an election speech. The 62-year-old was giving a talk to supporters in the coastal city of Barranquilla when a dark patch appeared across the politician’s beige trousers. Santos, who underwent surgery for prostate cancer in 2012, did not stop the speech. Doctors gave him a 97per cent chance of beating the disease after removing a prostate tumour. Upon leaving the hospital, Santos spoke to reporters and said the tumor
had not metastasized. President Santos, a graduate of both the London School of Economic and Harvard, was elected president in 2010. The video of the the Liberal-Conservative, who is hoping to retain power when Colombia goes to the polls on May 25, has now gone viral.

The two-year-old girl was driving her small pedal car outside her Florida apartment complex when a police cruiser pulled into the car park with its blue lights flashing. During a heartwarming moment, Officer Christian Velasco took out his citation book and handed little Za’Dariyah a ticket. Officer Velasco and his colleagues were patrolling the area in search of a criminal suspect when they saw little Za’Dariyah playing. He said: ‘She was going pretty fast. It took me a while to catch up to her, but we did, and she was cited.’ The traffic stop was captured by Za’Dariyah’s uncle Keyth Mishaw who was watching his niece play. He said: ‘Everyone always has bad things to say about the Jacksonville Sheriff ’s Office, well, I want to say “big props” to these officers for making a memorable moment for my family. ‘It was fun moment, brightened up the whole day.’ Later, Za’Dariyah appeared on television with her uncle, Keyth who took the photographs and her mother, Zumekia Mishaw. ‘I’m still in in shock right now,’ Ms Mishaw told First Coast News. ‘But she’s gotta pay her ticket.’ When asked how much the ticket was going to cost, Za’Dariyah replied: ‘Four dollars.’

Confab is not panacea to Nigeria’s problem — Ogboru
OLOROGUN Great Ovedje Ogboru is a former governorship candidate of the Democratic Peoples Party, DPP, and the leader of the opposition parties in Delta State. In an interactive session with journalists recently, he spoke on the proposed national conference among other issues of public interest. Gab Ejuwa was there. Excerpts What is your take on the just inaugurated national conference? It depends on those who are for or against the conference. Those who are against believe that nothing good will come out of it. They believe it will end like an empty talk shop just like the previous ones. But my view on this issue is that we have to talk. I am not so sure that the mood of the country today would permit a talk shop for the sake of it. I want to believe that whatever agenda will be put in place, restricting the parameters of the conference may not necessarily hold water because from the agitations so far from the ethnic nationalities, several stakeholders and eminent opinion leaders, the tendency is that people want to get to the root of the problems bedevilling this country from the time of the amalgamation till today. They believe that we have to do it in such a way that it ends up on the table of the people of this country. There is a consensus that solutions to our present challenges are far beyond existing political arrangements. That is to say,the outcome of the conference has to go beyond what we have today as a national assembly. It has to go through a referendum of the people if we are truly sincere. That way, the people would have to decide their fate once and for all. And if we want to look
nationalities in Delta. In any case, that will be restricting my person to an ethnic nationality. I do not speak for an ethnic nationality. I represent the aspirations of all our people and speak about the Nigerian state as we have inherited it. We are looking for a solution to the so-called nationality question. And that is what the national conference is all about. Do you subscribe to the idea that there must be no go areas at the conference? There should be nothing like no-go areas. The notion of no-go areas presupposes that there should be no conference at all. If there is a conference, the outcome cannot be predetermined. I believe that some of the fears being nursed by some Nigerians are uncalled for. The fear of no-go areas is to imagine that there are some persons coming to the table of brotherhood to ask for the country to be disintegrated. That is not going to happen. I want to believe that 99% of Nigerians believes so much in this country. They have lived together for the past 100 years under one nation call Nigeria. Therefore, they have acquired mutual understanding, mutual benefits, mutual tolerance, mutual vulnerabilities, and interdependence in these 100 years. So, the basis for discussing our unity, which was
,,
Whatever the outcome of the conference cannot be restricted again to the same National Assembly which by the very convocation of the conference has been established as incapable of handling the fundamental issues
at it very well, what do we talk about and why are we talking in the first place? If we are satisfied about what we have today, then there is no need for the conference. If there is a conference of this magnitude in the first place, knowing that we have a national assembly in place, it shows that something is lacking which is beyond the capacity of the National Assembly. If that is the case, it goes to the root cause of the national question, our ethnic nationalities, who we are, where we are and how we got to where we are today. That is to say, whatever the outcome of the conference cannot be restricted again to the same National Assembly which by the very convocation of the conference has been established as incapable of handling the fundamental issues. Therefore, the people must decide their future through a referendum. You are an Urhrobo leader, are you working with others to present a common view at the conference? I am not so sure when you say I am an Urhobo leader. Traditionally, we have leaders whom we very much respect and defer to and we trust them to present a common view for our various ethnic
absent in 1914 is actually there today. Therefore, whatever affects the Northern part of the country will mostly likely affect the South. To these extents, we have to look for a solution that will make us united even further. Having said so, the philosophical underpinning for that kind of union has to be consensually defined from the conference. What are those areas we have found in the past that make it impossible for our union to work efficiently? Why is national cohesion elusive? How do we build a strong and a virile nation? I believe that these and much more are fundamental issues that the conference must attend to. Sometimes, we just have misplaced fears. In a conference where all issues are inclusive and with no restrictions, everybody can come there and say whatever they want to say. At the end of the day, Nigeria will be better off for it. Take for an instance, if I were to ask all of you here even as educated people from different parts of this country, how did your ethnic nationality come into Nigeria? With all your education and exposure, you will be looking at me. You may just be able to say, Lord Lugard amalgamated us in 1914. Where are the amalgamation documents? What
OLOROGUN Great Ovedje Ogboru
are the conditions for that amalgamation? What are the limits of that amalgamation? We cannot be living under a treaty or a union that is not defined, that we don’t know how we relate to. Those are the things we have to discuss. Forget about the fears of disintegration. That is not going to happen. But we have to build a lasting legacy for generations to come. That is not right with the Lugardian treaty and we have to correct it. And then the military constitution that we have talks about the ‘Nigerian people’ and they did not participate in its making! These are the issues that the conference has to talk about. Our experiences living together for 100 years as one nation inspite of the imperfections show we are a resilient people. But we cannot continue to live with mistakes we can correct. The fact that we have realized that now, we are mutually vulnerable and interdependent means we are ready to look at the hundred years that we have lived together and the shortcomings to have a workable direction and arrangement for the future, an arrangement that can lead to a better Nigeria. That is what this conference should be about. Where there is peace, there will be prosperity and security of lives. I am very sure that we will be having a better environment, a more prosperous nation, a healthier nation and a better country. That is what the conference should be about, nothing short. How will you assess President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration? I will not be able to justify that President Goodluck Jonathan has not done very well but against the backdrop of other political leaders, I can see that there is progress in his administration. The administration that came before this, that was the one of our father, Obasanjo, spent outrageous sums of monies on electricity and we got nothing. This one has taken major pragmatic steps to ensure that sector of our economy is privatized like we did in telecommunications. And I think that will yield dividends in the no distance future. But as a humanist,
I am more interested in the development of the human resources portfolio of our country. I am more interested in the development of our leadership capacities and institutions. With this premise, I look at what this president did in 2011 by ensuring that 99% of the National Assembly
that we have today is freely and fairly elected unlike in the past when 99% of the national assembly was hand-picked or selected. That for me is a singular most important achievement because it guarantees proper leadership and the effect goes down to the root of the society and then synergy comes in and makes it possible that we can have good administration. It leads to better management of our resources to create better gains because of qualitative leadership inputs. Where that is absent, the growth and development of society becomes stunted. And that must be absent where leaders are imposed. Today, we see what has been happening in the National Assembly. It is because we have choices. That is because we have elected representatives. What is happening in the National Assembly today did not and could not have happened at any other time because we had monologue National Assemblies. Everything was yes. What the master said must be obeyed. But this is a national assembly, representing the variety of diversities of the Nigerian people, elected to represent their people. So, you don’t even look at it as a dysfunctional assembly. It is a virile national assembly. At the end of the day, water will find its level. You have to give that credit to President Goodluck Jonathan. Are you going to take another shot at the governorship election in Delta State? Like I have always said, the question of whether I am going to re-contest or contest is to be answered not today but at a later date in the future and that God Almighty will take control of that situation. We are looking at all options. All we have done is to try to rescue our people, to lead them, to show them what democracy is all about and to make them understand that alternatives are important in a democracy and that we are an alternative. Should they think we are right and proper, elect us. Until the people say they no longer want us, we will continue to stand there and wait for them to decide.

The relays are like a tradition to Nigerian athletics, but in recent times Nigerian athletes have struggled at world meets including the recent World Indoors where the 4x400m teams failed to make their presence felt. For about four hours,
the students, boys and girls, were locked in competition for victory in 111 race-dominated events, including relay, sack, low hurdle, hoop, band, egg and spoon, 3-legged, high steppers, bead bag and bouncers. Anambra plots total take over of athletics
A
NAMBRA commis sioner for sports, Edozie Aroh has said that a comprehensive programme for athletics is awaiting approval of the new government and when operational it will put Anambra State in a dominate position in Nigeria athletics. Mr. Aroh was speaking against the background of Anambra athletes representing other States in national competitions as funding be-
came problematic. He noted that starting from the 19 th edition of the National Sports Festival, Anambra will put up a good showing in athletics and indeed other sports that it has representation. The State is a catchment area for athletics. Notable names like Innocent Egbunike, Mary Onyali-Omagbemi, Mbanefo Akpom, Obinna Metu and many others have their roots in Anambra.
“We have put together a comprehensive programme to reposition athletics and other sports. Anambra is home to sports and we want to have a solid development base that will see Anambra in healthy rivalry with other athletics endowed States. “The national sports festival is still a long way off and its even open. But we are going to concentrate on grassroots development of talents. We are also going to renovate the track facility at the Onitsha Stadium to a world standard facility to give credence to our development efforts,” said the commissioner. He added that local coach Johnny Igboka was already working towards that direction by training grassroots athletes that have done the State proud in national competitions, stressing, “We are impressed with what he is doing and will continue to support his efforts. His programme has produced a lot of athletes and we will key into it.”

S
UPER Eagles combative mid fielder Ogenyi Onazi has stated that it will be unwise for the team and its coaches to pay too much emphasis on the Argentina/Nigeria match in the group F of the 2014 World Cup starting June in Brazil. This is just as Iran coach, Carlos Queiroz has vowed to beat the Nigerian team in the group opener on June 16. Nigerians seem to be obsessed about beating Argentina that have had the best out Nigeria on three different occasions at the World Cup. They see the Argentine team featuring Lionel Messi as the major obstacle to their progression from the group stage, forgetting that Iran and Bosnia-Herzegovina could be banana peels. “We are concentrating on the Nigeria match, then we will think about Argentina. For us, Nigeria means the World Cup,” Queiroz said. “An idiom says ‘everything or nothing.’ The Nigeria match means everything for us. I don’t care about the Portugal, England, Spain, and Brazil matches, but I just think about Nigeria,” the veteran Portuguese coach added.
Onazi who plays for Lazio in Italy recognized the danger Iran could pose for the Eagles and has rightly cautioned his teammates of underrating the games against Iran and Bosnia-Herzegovina. “We won’t play Argentina until we are done with both Iran and Bosnia. We have to avoid concentrating on one team alone and forget others that we will even face before Argentina. No doubt, Argentina are a big team and they are favourites, but that’s where it ends. We are going to take it one game at a time. For now, we have some preparatory matches to look forward to before the World Cup. When we get to Brazil, we will worry about Iran, Bosnia and Argentina in that order.

through sports. “The Governor has to get to work immediately as it affects sports development in the state as we are lagging behind in that area,” Umeh said, adding, “it is a shame that Anambra State does not have a state owned football team in any league in the country. How do we empower our youth?” he asked. Chief Umeh said although he is in support of the League Management Company’s decision to force government divestment from clubs, he does not believe it can work in the present economic life of the nation. “It can only work under an ideal situation. I don’t see it working now because government remains the biggest spender that can adequately fund clubs. To say clubs should go private can only work in future. It is a policy for the future, ot now.” He said that is what he would love to see the newly sworn-in Governor of Anambra State do. “He has to empower the youth and keep them gainfully engaged through sports because beside providing employment, it will keep the populace healthy and more productive.”

Enyeama, Ejide key to Eagles’ World Cup campaign—Rufai JACOB AJOM
I
F there is any aspect of the Super Eagles that can win the World Cup for Nigeria, that part will definitely be the goalkeeping department. This was the view of former Nigeria captain and first choice goalkeeper, Peter Rufai in a chat with Saturday Vanguard Sports. Rufai expressed confidence in the ability of goalkeepers Vincent Enyeama and Austin Ejide to lead the Eagles to victory in Brazil. “I can tell you categorically that the goalkeeping department will be key to Super Eagles campaign in Brazil because Enyeama and Ejide are in the form of their lives. They are good, experienced and dependable,” Rufai, who was fondly called Dodomayana in his active days, said. He said the goalkeepers’ skills were being enhanced by
the sound technical hands in the bench and with adequate training, the sky will be their limit. “Ike Shorunmu was a first grade goalkeeper and he has been doing a lot to keep these guys in top shape whenever they are in the national camp. I believe the three weeks or so they will work together before the World Cup will be crucial.” Asked to choose his number one between Enyeama and Ejide, Rufai hesitated. When he offered to speak he said, “independently, they are fantastic goalkeepers. Both of them have been to the World Cup. It is not something I can sentimentally say it is Ejide or Enyeama. It all depends on current form. The form they will show will determine who I choose as number one.”
