rofessor Ibidapo-Obe’s profile can fit into a book. It was quiet a task abridging for the purpose of this interview. For a man with such formidable accomplishments, I think we are missing out on true professionals who would have contributed to the development of their chosen sector. As is normal – even in our football, so it is in national development – we never field our first eleven. Meet Prof. Ibidapo-Obe who I spent an enlightening afternoon with him(and wife, pictured with him below) in their Lekki, Lagos home. Professor Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, a professor of Systems Engineering and President of the Nigerian Academy of Science is a former Vice Chancellor (2000-2007) at the University of Lagos and the inaugural Vice Chancellor of the new Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. I think it is more of the Science in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy [Ph. D] Lanka. We loved him a lot. I got interested in teachers. REPORTAGE If you were the minister of education, what are the changes that will turnaround the education sector? Quiet a few; from the primary up to the university level. One of the changes will be to re-invent the type of schools I went to, even at primary level. I want to see a school that does much more than teaching to pass secondary school examination; a school that will teach PRUDOV D VFKRRO WKDW ZLOO KDYH D ÀHOG ZKHUH FKLOGUHQ FDQ play football, netball, volleyball or basketball; a school where you come in the morning and you are ushered into the classroom after the assembly with drums. This is the type of school I went to. I am not even reinventing. I am not talking of schools in the United States. I am talking of schools that I went to. Re-invent those schools; get teachers re-motivated. Teachers are going to be doing that 24 hours, they are not going to look for extras – because the type of salaries we will be paying WKHP ZLOO EH VR VXIÀFLHQW WKDW WKH\ ZLOO QRW HYHQ ORRN IRU anything else to spend their time doing that. Same also goes to secondary schools. We will put in modern infrastructures so that they will be happy to go to school. Your tenure at UNILAG was when they had a lot of issues, especially with cult‌ (Cuts in) No, no, no! I moved the cult thing out in two ways. Number one, I got out of my shell – of sitting on a pedestal and came to talk to the students. I formed a group; I called them Intellectual Model Committee. These were young people in various departments and faculty. I formed them into a committee; they diffused with the students, the lecturers and assistant lecturers – not professors. 7KHLU UHVSRQVLELOLW\ ZDV WR ÀQG RXW ZK\ SHRSOH ZHQW into cultism. So, they mingled at parties and had drinks to sift out what was really going on. Through them, we discovered that people go into cult because they want to get things that they cannot get under their present circumstance, i.e. beautiful girls, money to be able to impress those beautiful girls, etc. How can you blame that on beautiful girls? The whole problem now rests on women? Most of the problems rest on women; even female cults are actually based on women and men. The female cult like the Vikings was formed to protect who goes to this man or that man. That is the truth and it is painful. I set up a committee to motivate and encourage students to come forward and renounce the groups. We had some professionals like sociologists, psychiatrists and psychologists to assists the students because there were some genuine needs which we tried to tackle. With this, there was no cultism during my tenure. You are in Ebonyi as vice chancellor and you are also in UNILAG. You have to travell all the time. What time do you have to relax? I plan my itinerary in such a way that I do everything in order of priority. Once in a while, when in Abakaliki, I go and play golf. In Lagos, my social events are there. I relax

Ă *CJEBQP 0CF at weekends. I stay with my wife and we go out together. This last vacation, about a month ago, I was with my grandchildren and it was fun. Do you have any plans for retirement? Our retirement now is 70. I am 65 so, I have 5 years more. I like what I am doing. For example, going to Ebonyi opens another vista in the sense that I never knew that DFFHVV FRXOG EH VXFK D GLIĂ€FXOW WKLQJ , VDZ SHRSOH LQ Ebonyi who have never been to Enugu. They have just been around Abakaliki. These are villagers. Unfortunately, when we now set up these universities and bring them in, VRPH RI WKHP DUH VR EULOOLDQW WKDW WKH\ KDYH Ă€YH RYHU Ă€YH total scores; brilliant people, where have you been! I think, we have a lot of work to do to educate people so that they can actually achieve their maximum potentiality but we need strong leadership. I know the question is: So, if you believe so much in strong OHDGHUVKLS ZK\ GRQ¡W \RX JHW LQWR SROLWLFV DQG JHW LQWR political affairs? The reason is that the way it is right now, politics is not played on a level ground. You need to do a few things; godfatherism you need to go through. By the time you go through the process and emerge, you would have lost your personality. So, it is better to stay like away and enjoy yourself. Talking with you, I get a feeling that you love teaching. You are a consummate educator, if I may say that? I love youths. I believe in the youth. I look at my case and I think if the right environment is there, in many cases, our youths will do excellently well. Look at the case of United States. What are our people doing in the United State? Most of them are in top jobs, doing very well. Of
course, some of them are not doing well. How come those WKDW DUH GRLQJ Ă€QH DUH GRLQJ VR ZHOO" 7KLV LV EHFDXVH LQ the United States, there is an enabling environment. This is what I wish should be created in this country. I am passionate about this country because I think this FRXQWU\ KDV HYHU\WKLQJ LI LW GRHVQ¡W KDYH , ZRQ¡W ERWKHU , have a vision of this country; that this country should expand to the whole of West Africa – the whole of Africa – that is the geo-political zone. Then, we can start talking face-to-face with America. But we are not doing that. We are busy divided over religion and other inconsequentials because people want to cheat; not because they believe so much in religion. It is because they want to cheat. What really makes you happy? When I see people that are happy; when I am able to do things that make people happy. For example, we commissioned a building for the bishop of my church at Ilesha. The enthusiasm of the people of the town; they were excited seeing the building. That makes me happy. I am motivated to do more. I like to see people happy; then, I am happy because I know life is short. You have to do as much as you can do. I have no particular choice but I like to feel and smell good.

My dear Lady, I think you are making the same mistake most ladies are making today which is: She believes she is in a UHODWLRQVKLS ZLWK D JX\ DQG WKH JX\ GRHVQ¡W EHOLHYH he is in a relationship with her. From your statement “It is not as he gives me anythngâ€?, it seems you have given him your body through sex, and secretly expects that the least he can do is take care of you. If that is the case, you need to know that these days, guys see Ladies as cheap and READILY AVAILABLE, and they know that sex is no longer an essential commodity, but an exercise our ladies today even beg for so they can just have the presence of a Man in their

lives. But even then, I am not surprised, because IT IS WRITTEN that “Because they refuse to acknowledge God in their lives, He gave them up to a REPROBATE MIND to do the things that are not convenient. Now tell me my dear, HOW CONVENIENT IS IT TO BREAK UP WITH SOMEONE WHO WAS NEVER DATING YOU, because from the little you have indicated here, he was never committed to you in anyway, but was just sleeping with you like guys just have a lot of free sex with babes these days. Please accept my deepest sympathy.
I DON’T WANT SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE!
