From the editor... The unfriendly business clime in Nigeria often galvanized by lack of power, good bank credit has been the bane for many women shying away from going into business. Those who do, never make it into the big league. Frustrated by these challenges, many end up dropping by the way or remaining small scale business women. For some of these women, their gender becomes the limiting factor. It is for this reason that women are still calling for 30 percent affirmative action in the appointment of political office holders in Nigeria. Mrs. Folake Abosede Oyemade, Managing Director, Sam and Sara/Omoluabi Garment Factory, is not one to play feeble in the business arena. She takes on challenges as they come constantly exploring new grounds and heights in business. Today, she has her hands in many pies; fashion, farming, mining. She comes to the business arena not as a mediocre or inferior to any gender. Her victory is evident in her thriving businesses. Her success story will inspire many. Gracing

Looking for the latest trends to transition into? Hopefully our weekly fab list will help you decide the major trends to keep you looking fab all day and all week.

CULOTTE JUMPSUIT

The culotte jumpsuit is this season’s fashion must-have trending on the fashion radar.Since culotte jumpsuits tend to be voluminous at the bottom, it is always advisable for the top to be fitted to create balance. Lipsy culotte jumpsuit Calvin Klein culotte jumpsuit

PRINTED MIDI SKIRTS

Lanvin yellow shift dress

You want to feel like Audrey Hepburn? Throw one of these chic skirts on, with a plain tee or a top. That is all it takes to achieve this trend.

YELLOW TREND There was one colour that dominated the runway this season above all others yellow. Designers like Oscar de la Renta, popped the cheery hue into floor-sweeping evening wear, while Marni offered day wear, sunny-side up. We spotted neon, canary, lemon, mustard — you name it. The key to being on-trend here, lies less in the silhouette and more in the depth of colour. In short: Ditch the pastels. Go bright or go home. Celine yellow box bag

Topshop khaki midi skirt

KHAKI

Charlotte Olympia yellow heels

River island khaki camisole

#LIVEFROMNEWYORK: THE CURVYCON 2015

but I guess living an exemplary life isn’t just talking but also in your actions too.

The CurvyCon was another of the fabulous events I had the opportunity to attend while in NewYork last month. Created by two American curvy bloggers, CeCe Olisa and Chastity Garner, the event was a gathering of major plus size bloggers, curvy style enthusiasts, plus size fashion retailers, key media platforms and such. It’s aim beyond meeting, greeting and networking was to allow for exchange of information, ideas and support between likeminded curvy/plus sized ladies. There were several guest speakers as well as speaking panels covering subjects ranging from relationship to wellness and health. Celebrity guest included top gospel singer, Kierra Sheard, Hollywood actress Amber Riley, Curvy model/designer, Nadia Abhoulsson and so many others. It was the first outing for the brand and hopefully not the last as ladies travelled from all over the world to be a part of the day’s activities. Personally, I enjoyed meeting so many of the bloggers that I’d followed over the years and just seeing so many beautiful women, built like me and for the first time in my life, not feeling like a fish out of water. It is definitely something I look forward to seeing happen here in Nigeria someday. Here are a few women I met on the day and their Instagram handles so you too can also check out their personal style.

KANAYO EBI Instagram: @Kachmeifyoucan_ Stylist to the celebrities and stars, fashionista, creative director and enthusiast are just a few labels one can use to describe Kanayo. She is Nigerian but studied abroad and is currently based in NewYork. Her resume boasts of an impressive list of shows like 106&Park, Rip the Runway, Music Meets Runway etc where her impressive sartorial skills have been put to good use over KANAYO EBI and over again. Her presence at CurvyCon was a huge nod to the fact that plus size women can also be stylish as she was interviewed and photographed endlessly. It also helps that her personal style is completely off the charts.

KIERRA SHEARD Instagram: @Kierrasheard Kierra comes from a strong gospel preaching and singing background with a successful career in her own right in gospel music. Her family had a reality show on BET called The Sheards and I was a big fan of it. Meeting her in person was an awesome opportunity at the CurvyCon as she KIERRA SHEARD took a selfie of us both and posted on her Instagram page. She also launched her plus size luxury clothing line Eleven60+ on the same day which I browsed through on the display rack. The pieces were quite detailed and very stylish too. I bought a pair of full flared pants because the fit was quite nice and the length was perfect! With such a huge fan base and social media following, her humility and pleasantness really surprised me

SUSAN UJAQUE Instagram: @Sustyletv I actually met Susan a few days before the CurvyCon at one of the events lined up on the Full Figured Fashion Week schedule. I was drawn to her quirky, yet totally wearable sense of style. I struck up a conversation with her and she was sweeter than a baby. From the way she dressed to the passion she exuded for her blog as well as fashion SUSAN UJAQUE in general, I was impressed by Sue. Running into her again at CurvyCon was a delightful mini reunion and we talked extensively about style matters for both straight size and curvy women. Her accessories were also quite outstanding.

SABRINA SERVANCE Instagram: @sabrinaateam Reality star of Lifetime Tv’s “Big Women, Big Love”, Sabrina is exactly as the show’s title describes. She walked up to me like she knew me and paid a compliment. In surprise, I actually turned around to make sure it was me she was speaking to and she burst out SABRINA SERVANCE laughing. The girl was so bubbly and full of life, one really can’t help liking her. She was also one of the many speakers on the panel. CHANTELLE BURKETT Instagram: @Everythingcurvyandchic I’ve followed Chantelle’s blog for about three years now and if I could describe her in a word it would be Confident! The girl can work a camera like it was nobody’s business and meeting her in person was just incredible. She was funny, playful, energetic, friendly CHANTELLE BURKETT and wouldn’t stop making me laugh. Her Ankara skirt was made by a friend of hers and she got tons of compliments on it. ROCHELLE JOHNSON Instagram: @Iambeauticurve So gorgeous, chic and put together. when I spotted Rochelle, I simply said to myself, “Who is that girl”? I do not consider myself a slacker by any account in the style department but there was something about her that made me just want to stop, stare, follow her home and raid her ROCHELLE JOHNSON entire wardrobe. You know that girl you meet and you immediately want her to be your best friend? That’s Rochelle!

ON YOUR MARKS! TELL LIES! GET MARRIED! ...CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK.

I was in a women’s meeting once at Wuse Zone 7, Abuja, when a good female friend of mine said openly that one thing she is sure of is that while it is easy for you to catch a man who is into adultery, it may take forever for you to discover that a woman has been cheating on you all along. You know what! I couldn’t agree less. She is quite right about that. That is why I pity men who instead of spending time loving their spouses or fiancées, would rather spend time doing things that keep building a gulf between them. Women can be good with lies, and better than men when it comes to telling it, but I’m sure we can prevent that from happening as we find out what the emotional needs of our woman are, and do our best to meet them. Be careful to note that no two women are the same or have the same emotional needs. One woman may have a need for loyalty, another may need Space. I am talking about emotional needs here and not developmental needs. We have been told to cherish, before attempting to nourish our women. (That’s a topic for another day). Now back to the issue at hand. After the encounter I had with this lady, I also found out that it’s a common practice amongst ladies now to keep two or three boyfriends at the same time, and sleep with them. For the ladies, it’s called “keeping my options open”. Now that scares me because I am put in a fix that way. I don’t do this work alone. I work with God. You may fool me, but can you fool God? You may fool yourself, but can you fool God? Most of us have laid a faulty foundation for ourselves, and unfortunately we have also chosen to go on building on it. I hope very soon, we won’t start singing “atishoo! atishoo! We all fall down”. Some of you men are fantastic, and full of prospects. Don’t lie to these ladies about who you are and where you are, because the ones, who will marry you for what they see and like, will marry you, and won’t be disappointed, because as a person of truth, you will always show up. I have heard people say something like “after all the sacrifice she made for him when he had nothing, now he goes around with different ladies just because he now has some change in his pocket”. Maybe you need to know something about men, which is whether he has money or not, during midlife, he will find himself chasing women, and this has nothing to do with the fact that he hates you or is tired of you. It is just a crisis moment in his life that he may not be able to explain unless a counselor sits him

down to tell him what is happening to him at this time of his life, and why he may need to stay away from other women at this time. I need to warn you Religious Leaders that are

sleeping around with these vulnerable women, that they mention your names when they visit counselors, and they don’t just mention it alone, but your name alongside others that they have slept with like the man who sells drugs at the pharmacy, the guy who helps them to procure VISA, their male hairdresser and you their Pastor. Is that what you want? We cannot find a LIFE PARTNER when we are not done with a life of lies. Marriage requires more than anything else, TRUTH! And I am sure that with God’s help, for those who seek it with all their heart, they will not only find Truth, but discover that it can become their nature. What inspiration you to veer into uniform production at a time others were doing regular fashion? Well, one thing about business is that it is very dynamic. You have to move with the times otherwise, you will find yourself doing something outdated or something that is not worth your while anymore. I am bold to proclaim that I am a pace- setter. I have always been. At the time I did retail clothing, we were the first to start selling sportswear. I was just in my 20s and as a young girl, I traveled, brought things in and sold. It was quite exiting. But as I grew older, that fulfillment wasn’t there anymore. I needed to move away from what everybody else was doing. I figured I had to do something more challenging, more tasking and original because, anybody can buy and sell but not everyone can actually run a factory or go into manufacturing which required certain skills. In the early days, I had factories abroad that produced for me. When I did that, I provided jobs for people there. But as a patriot, I decided that as long as we manufactured these things abroad, we won’t create jobs here in Nigeria. So the passion to put food on the tables of many Nigerians made me go into uniform production. I love the fact that, I am creating job opportunities for people here in Nigeria. Was there something you saw with school uniforms then that made you decide to start designing new ones? Oh yes! A lot of uniforms were awful and tacky; only a hand- full of them had presentable uniforms and I kept telling myself that Nigerians deserve better. In the whole of Africa and the black race, we are the most fashionable and most intelligent. Nigeria has everything going for it, but it just looks like there are some forces that keep dragging Nigerians and Nigeria backwards. But I believe that I’m an agent of change, even before the change mantra came. I am a stickler for perfection. I like everything around me to be prim and proper. So in my own little way, I just felt this is the least I could do for the education sector. But things are getting better now. It seems schools are competing amongst themselves. They are all trying to look the best because now they know that when you are well kitted, you are confident and your rate of assimilation is higher. Statistics and research show that students who love their uniforms, enjoy going to school than students who don’t. Of your many designs which is your favourite? Every design is my favourite because you can always bring out the best in every uniform. If you give me the worst uniform in the world today and tell me, ‘’don’t alter it completely, I just need a rework’. I will rework and remodel it in such a way you won’t believe it’s the same garment.

Did you get any mentoring from anybody as an entrepreneur? Well, I wouldn’t say I got any official mentoring but when you grow up with a mother like mine, what you get is a form of mentoring. My mother was a trained teacher and business woman even before I was born. I grew up in a business environment, and that taught me a lot. I recently read a book about people driven by passion and how some people allow passion to die because they are not driven…. Passion is stronger than drive, because if you have drive for something but aren’t passionate about it, if you experience one or two disappointment, that drive will die. What do you think people should do with their passion? Follow your passion, you would always do very well with your passion and you will always have drive for it. If you have a drive and the passion is not there, it will die off. A lot of women are very laid back; that’s a problem, because as an employer of labour, I have very few women and I usually have to sit a lot of them down and say I’m sure you’re this laid back because you rely on your husband. I don’t think that is okay. You must be your own person, be a support for your husband, do not be another form of liability to him. Times are hard, and I think any right thinking man will not want to marry a woman who will be there breeding kids and cooking, because for those of us who have the drive and passion, we still have children and still cook, so what makes you special if all you can do is breed children and cook? What is your advice for people who want to give up because they are not able to balance work and home? These things happen naturally. I m a mother of twins by the grace of God and somehow, I have been able to cope with taking care of them as well as running my business. I believe that if you are truly passionate about something, you will always find a way. When my husband met me, I was a young girl already set in my ways. I was working as a civil servant as well as running a business. Later on, as my business grew bigger, I saw that it was hard to combine work and business. I had to resign to face my business full time. So, my passion has always driven me to do everything that I did. Having done Sam & Sara these many years, what new thing are you pursuing now? There are many new things but let’s keep it under wraps. Presently, I am also into mining and farming. I tend to find myself in the areas where men hold sway. • Oyemade and family myself that I am a human being with endless possibilities to achieve whatever God puts at my disposal to achieve. Let’s just say I am a woman of many parts and business runs in my blood. Are you passing it on to the children? Oh sure! My children are very driven business wise. In fact, sometimes when we are talking, they would say ‘mummy, look this is business’ and I would say, is it me you want to practice your business exploits on? So, it runs in the family. Although my husband a politician isn’t exactly a business man, but I believe it is rubbing off on him. What is the major challenge you have as an entrepreneur? We have lots of challenges, that’s what makes manufacturing the worst type of business to get into in Nigeria. I don’t know which to tell you is worse than the other, because the manpower bit is a very big one and then the issue of electricity, funding with high interest rates, unstable government policies, too many issues. That’s why I said passion and drive is necessary, we have to keep at it.

God has been marvelous in my marriage, He has been wonderful in the lives of my children in the lives of my children, in my business, He’s been awesome. There is no area of my life where I have not experienced the greatness and mercy of God.

What area of business do you envy and want to break into? I’d rather not tell. I’d say I have broken into it already but I can’t share that on the pages of newspaper. It’s an area where you don’t employ too many people but when it begins to unfold, you’d know. I don’t want people to know my next move. Let that be my surprise.

If you were to live life again would you do Sam and Sara? Yes, because then I am able to employ and put food on the tables of many Nigerians. It doesn’t matter if my other lines of businesses give me a billion dollars a day, I will not stop Sam and Sara even if I have to take money from another line of business to fund it, because it is my way of developing Nigeria.

You recently turned 50. What are you grateful for life for? I’m grateful for life for too many things. God has been gracious to me in every area of my life; God has been marvelous in my marriage, He has been wonderful

What is the trend in uniforms now? In Nigeria, there is really no trend. I can tell you what the trend is in a place like America. But in Nigeria, we are somewhat conservative. If you are making uniform for a Christian school for instance, they will tell you, the

12

/ July 12, 2015

neck must be high, the sleeve must be long, so there is really no trend. You hardly have schools where kids wear fashionable trousers to school. In the USA, you have what they call skort. They look trendy and smart and make for decency if they want to jump up or sit well. People should consider kids wearing trousers or skorts to school. With more men harassing young girls, if a girl wears a pair of trousers with a belt, it’s going to be a little more difficult for any man to assault her. How would you describe your style? I like things that are smart. I’m not really the type that likes loose clothing. I like things that can help me carry myself easily. I hardly wear traditional clothing except if I’m going to an environment where they will raise an eyebrow. I am not a traditional dresser. I love wearing English clothes. It’s smarter. Where is your travel destination? I like exotic destinations like Hawaii, the French Riviera, Waikiki beach, Fiji etc. The truth is if they are really exotic and they are far, you don’t go back there so quickly. You just look for another one to go to. So far, the one I have enjoyed most is Hawaii. What do you splurge on? A good holiday! The memories stay with you forever. People put so much money on clothes and jewellery after a few wears, you get tired of it. But a holiday especially with your family, you never forget that. You keep talking about the experiences over and over again. Do you have a philosophy that guides you? Yes. Whatever you want to do, do it well. I’m not a mediocre. I don’t like it. It really annoys me. What do you look forward to? I look forward to a lot but I won’t say here.

Foods You Never Knew Were Loaded with Carbs 1. BAKED BEANS: The more you eat, the more you… load up on carbs? Sure, if they’re premade baked beans. In their natural state, beans are naturally high in carbs, but much of those are complex carbs and beneficial fiber. Plus, they are high in protein. But many popular varieties of canned baked beans have a lot of added sugar. About 12 grams per half-cup serving. “The American Heart Association recommends women consume no more than 24 grams a day of sugar.” So that’s half a day’s sugar in one side dish. Don’t write off beans altogether, though, just baked beans. 2. FIGS: No doubt about it, figs are a superfood. Full of fiber, they are also a great source of copper, potassium, manganese, and pantothenic acid. But when you take the water out of a fig, you’re left with a tiny, toothsome nugget dense in nutrients, fiber—and carbs. Mindlessly pop half a dozen dried figs and you’ve just consumed more than 30 grams of carbohydrates! Still, according to Lori Zanini, R.D., with HealthCare Partners and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, dried figs have plenty of pros. “They are fat- and cholesterol-free and a great whole food snack option on the go because they don’t require refrigeration. Just be mindful of portion size 3. PRUNE JUICE: It’s not often (if ever) that we wake up craving a glass of prune juice. But it is healthy—packed with

fiber and sorbitol, it’s also a good source of vitamins C, K, B6, riboflavin, niacin. All that and nearly 45 grams of carbs per eight ounce serving. The good news is that the naturally occurring sugar in prune juice is preferable to the stuff you find in sugar-sweetened beverages. But if you’re craving for some juice and watching your carb intake, opt for a glass of orange juice freshly squeezed that is, (26 grams of carbs) or grapefruit juice (23 grams). 4. CHESTNUT: Whether they’re eaten raw or roasted over an open fire, you may think that all nuts are both calorie and protein dense, but the chestnut is the exception to the rule. This little carb capsule is a starchy oddball amongst its nutty brethren. A single ounce serving has about 15 grams of carbs and less than a gram of protein; the same serving of peanuts or almonds have around six grams of carbs, while walnuts have less than four. On the flip side, chestnuts only pack about one-third the calories as the same amount of other popular nuts, so moderation is key.
