he was a young, beautiful single lady attending the Monrovia Conference when the late Minister of Information, Chief Theophilus Benson, first cast his eyes on her. A year later, in 1962, she was on her way to Nigeria to begin life as Mrs. Opral Benson. After a couple of years as a full time wife, Mrs. Opral Benson decided to apply herself productively. She joined the University of Lagos as Registrar and spent the next 10 years working with students and staff. The desire to follow her passion and own her own thing led to early retirement. She left to establish a salon and followed with a beauty school, The Opral Benson Beauty Training Institute; that has churned out so many beauty experts and entrepreneurs in the last 30 years. In 1973, recognising her sterling beautiful qualities, the then Oba of Lagos, conferred on her the title, Iya Oge of Lagos. The former chairman of Johnson Products turned 80 recently and members of the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria rolled out the drums to celebrate her. As the world celebrates women in the month of March, Allure celebrates a woman whose contribution to the beauty industry in Nigeria is unparalleled. At 80, she stands as proof of what she does: beautiful and ageless.

has expanded and developed and when I look around WRGD\ DQG VHH ZKDW KDV KDSSHQHG ZLWK KDLU , FDQ¡W believe that we have gone that far. Everybody is into hair. Now when I look back, I say WR P\VHOI WKDW LW ZDVQ¡W D EDG LGHD DIWHU DOO WR KDYH OHIW academic for salon business. At that time, I brought two people from the USA, to teach people how to do the hair and to give me some courses. And when there was a company in Chicargo that wanted to come to Nigeria, to establish and make hair products, they invited me to join them. So I was one of those who established the -RKQVRQV¡ SURGXFWV DQG ZH PDQXIDFWXUHG 8OWUD 6KHHQ KHUH LQ 1LJHULD , ZDV WKH FKDLUPDQ RI WKDW FRPSDQ\¡V board for a long time before I left. We also started a product known as Opral B. it was for babies and children. We made products and we also imported products at the same time. And Johnson products in Nigeria became very popular. And after so many years, the Johnsons decided to go back home and they left me in charge of the company. Finally, I wanted my own time. And so when others came and wanted to buy into the company, I decided to leave and work more or less with my own school which I had established. The Johnson product is still out there. Most people criticise and perceive as vain people who take deep interest in beauty. What would you say for beauty? , ZRXOG VD\ WKDW EHDXW\ LV D JUHDW WKLQJ ,¡YH DOZD\V believed in it whether you are beautiful facially or in the VRXO $QG ZKHQ \RX VD\ EHDXW\ LW¡V D SRVLWLYH WKLQJ WKDW was why I left academic work at a time when people respected lawyers, doctors or engineers to go into beauty. But when I was made the Iya oge of Lagos by the Oba of Lagos in 1973, I thought this is a fashion FDSLWDO ZK\ GRQ¡W , GR VRPHWKLQJ DERXW EHDXW\" 7KDW was how I started a beauty company and started going DURXQG ZLWK LW" ,W LV RQH RI WKH EHVW SURIHVVLRQV WKHUH LV , GRQ¡W FDUH ZKDW DQ\ERG\ VD\V $SDUW IURP WUDLQLQJ SHRple and teaching them how to look after themselves, it gives them opportunity for jobs. It gives them opportunity for helping others and to put up a good appearance. Putting up a good appearance is very positive for you because then, inside you feel good about yourself. And if you feel good inside and you now add the outward beauty to it, you are a made person. There must be something that the Oba saw in you at that time to confer on you such awesome title. How would you describe your style? Fashion changes all the time but I think whatever one feels good in and if you can set a pattern that you think is good, do it. I always like to do things that I feel comIRUWDEOH LQ , GRQ¡W OLNH WR RYHUGR RU XQGHU GR DQ\WKLQJ , GRQ¡W OLNH IDVKLRQ WR EH WR WKH H[WUHPH , OLNH WR NHHS myself in the middle course. And I think fashion today has developed much more than in those days. Some of it is good some bad. But still, if it makes them feel good about themselves, fashion is about feeling good, looking good, appearing and making others appreciate you for who you are. What was fashion like in 1973? &DQ , VWLOO UHPHPEHU ZKDW ZDV LQ YRJXH" ,¡OO VWDUW ZLWK the Yoruba iro & buba which has gone through a lot of phases- from short sleeve to long sleeve and then back to short sleeve again. I did a lot of wrappers and split VNLUWV :H GLGQ¡W GR DV PXFK JRZQV DV ZH DUH GRLQJ QRZ , WKLQN PRVW RI RXU FORWKHV ZHUH D ELW PRUH Ă€WWHG 7KH ZUDSSHU \RX FDQ WLH LW WR EH DV Ă€WWHG DV \RX ZDQW The fabrics we used are different. These days you see SHRSOH ZLWK VKLQ\ IDEULFV DQG VWRQHV :H GLGQ¡W KDYH that in those days but whatever we had was appreciated and I tried to always come out the best I could from what was available. You recently turned 80 years. What is life like at 80? ,W KDV MXVW VWDUWHG VR LW¡V VWLOO HDUO\ WR WHOO ZKDW OLIH ZLOO be at 80. I just hope it will be as it has been with other years. What has the journey to 80 been like? , WKLQN *RG KDV EHHQ JRRG WR PH ,W¡V EHHQ D VRUW RI experiment in terms of what you have to do, people you meet, how you get along with people, which type RI ZRUN \RX GR ZKDW DUH \RXU DFFRPSOLVKPHQWV" ,W¡V been a long journey but I think I have had a good time because I have been lucky to have met people in my work, home, and family that have been good to me. , ZRXOGQ¡W ZDQW WR VD\ WKDW , KDYHQ¡W KDG DQ\ W\SH RI problems because life is made of good things and bad things, but I think the good things that have happened to me are far more than the negative things. So I look forward to continuing that kind of process.
