With the explosion of popular music comes the star- fetish syndrome – our seeming occupation with the private lives and idiosyncrasies of our creative talents. Peter Okoye sets the record straight in his chat with Pamela Echemunor. ulti-talented duo, Peter and Paul Okoye, a.k.a. P-Square, started their rise to fame over a decade ago; starting small, performing on a local scale before making it to the big league. The duo, managed by big brother Jude Okoye, introduced pop into the Nigerian music scene during an era it wasn’t a popular genre. From street to stage, the limelight took them beyond borders, performing beside the biggest names in the music industry, locally and internationally.The second half of the duo, Peter, shares his story with Allure Vanguard. He speaks on his love for music, life and family. 8

For us, it was all about the love of music. Music was something we loved doing. All we wanted was not just for people to listen to P-Square, but for people to start listening to Nigerian music too. I have always been a huge fan of garlic bread, beans and red meat. A few days ago, I was asked to make a dietary meal for a cancer patient and amidst my research, it occurred to me that garlic and legumes such as kidney beans when paired with tomatoes is bumper packed with antioxidants. Immediately I thought... Garlic bread, delicious beans and chilli con carne. My mouth began to water as I rushed into my car and headed for the grocery store. I wanted to make this quick, easy and delicious so I went straight to the canned food isle and picked up a can each of kidney beans, white beans and tomato purĂŠe. I could use cooked brown beans but that would have been boring. Then to the butchers for 250g of fresh minced meat and then to the vegetable mart for onions, tomatoes, pepper, fresh basil and coriander, garlic and ginger and scotch bonnets (ata rodo). I also got a pack of cherry tomatoes and headed back to my Miele kitchen for the throw down. I put on my apron and turned up the heat in the oven. Chopped a quarter green, red and yellow pepper, set aside; Diced 1 medium onion, 2 scotch bonnets (ata rodo); Grated 1 clove of garlic, 1tsp worth of ginger and one medium sized carrot; Tomatoes also got a chop, seeds and all.

Then the real throw down started. I put on the cooker, heated up my sauce pan and threw in 1 tablespoon of olive oil. In went the garlic for a few seconds and WKHQ WKH RQLRQV DQG JLQJHU WR GL̆XVH WKH ÀDYRUV Tomatoes followed shortly after and covered it to let simmer.

I wanted my mince to be cooked and well seasoned before being paired with the tomato stew so, In the sauce pan, I put in 1 tsp. of olive oil and 1 crushed garlic clove then 1/2 a tablespoon of diced onions and in went the 250g of mince beef. Stirred until browned and season with 1tsp of black pepper, 1tsp of fresh basil, 1 tsp. of steak seasoning and salt to taste... It

tasted heavenly. Back to my tomatoes stew, which was beginning to reduce a little too much but ended up working in my favour, where I added the rodo and stirred in the mince. Seasoned with some more salt, 1/2 tsp of white pepper, and some more fresh basil (1/4tsp). Tossed in the mixed bell peppers for 3 minutes and set aside. Meanwhile, I emptied the can of kidney beans and white beans, measured 1/4 cup each and sautĂŠed in the same pan used for the mince.

KINABUTI LAUNCHES MIA BY KINABUTI By - Olubukunola Femi-Dagunro

Fashion outfit, Kinabuti recently launched its new collection, “Mia by Kinabuti” in Lagos. Tagged “Sex and City Lagos”, the new collection featured over 40 peices of outfits that are simple, playful and fun. AKINTUNDE AKINLEYE PRESENTS EACH PASSING DAY By - Oscar Ochiogu LagosPhoto Foundation presents “Each Passing Day”, a solo exhibition of iconic photojournalist, Akintunde Akinleye,showcasing his documentation of Nigeria. “Each Passing Day”, Brings together photographs categorized to reflect series of unrelated events and activities in the daily lives of ordinary citizens of Nigeria. Central to Akintunde’s storytelling of the post military era in Nigeria, are the trials, tribulations and joys of ordinary Nigerians, as they aspire for a better quality of life. The pictures depict a truthful rendering of each passing day in the life of resilient Nigerians and show the political, social and physical landscape in which we exist. “Each Passing Day” is a few of hundreds of thousands of single images, extracted from different documentary projects and spot news events, but inspired by the Nigerian space during the last decade and now. This exhibit is a retrospect of Akintunde’s style, good taste for aesthetics. Akintunde has been exhibited in Washington, Los Angeles, New Mexico, Lagos, Amsterdam, Graz, Bamako, Madrid, Munich, U.K and Pordenone in Italy. Akintunde lives in Lagos and works for Reuters in Nigeria. Captured here are some faces that graced the event.
