ST. MATTHEW-DANIEL
Voice of the voiceless By - Jemi Ekunkunbor
M
rs. Laila St. Matthew Daniel is a leadership and peak performance coach as well as a seasoned administrator. Although she is better known for her activities in defence of hurting and traumatised women, she is an accomplished entrepreneur and furniture maker who made her mark in the early ‘80s and ‘90s as a premier female furniture manufacturer. Born into the O’dwyer family of Calabar and raised in a strict Saro-based background, the woman fondly called Mrs. D by her numerous radio fans, developed a knack for fighting injustice at an early stage. Her passion to fight the cause of the oppressed stayed with her to adulthood. Today, that same passion has led to her becoming a voice for the oppressed and battered of society. A pretty sight for sore eyes, nothing about this glamorous grand mother and mother of four depicts her as an activist. In the wake of the slaughter of the Mubi Boys, she was out on the streets along with women of like minds protesting their killing in a march tagged, “Nigerian Women Mournâ€?. She also led another march when the Chibok Girls were taken. But her desire is not just to advocate for the rights of women only but to build a place of rest, a shelter for traumatized women, who are victims of violence. In 2006, she set up Acts Generation, an NGO dedicated to offering counselling and rehabilitation services to women whose rights have been violently infringed on. In celebration of International Women’s Day, we spoke with Mrs. Laila St. Matthew-Daniel and like the activist that she is, she likes to call a spade a spade. How did you get interested in activism and advocating for women? Well, being a social activist for women came out of the deep burden for issues that affect women, especially in a society like ours where some women are short changed in a lot of things. Added to that, is the call of the UN for gender parity. When I was growing up, I found out that I had a lot of compassion, especially when women were badly treated. In my life time, I have been through what I call the good, the bad and the ugly; times of pain and hurt. In our society, if anything happens, it is always the ZRPDQ¡V IDXOW 0RVW RI WKH WLPH ZKHQ VRPHWKLQJ KDSSHQV WKH\ ZLOO WHOO \RX ÂśJR DQG EHJ \RXU KXVEDQG¡ Even when rape happens, you realise that the onus lies on the woman to prove that she was actually not the cause of the rape. So, it started off fully about 8 or 9 years ago; when I decided to start holding small seminars for women on issues affecting them. From there, it just evolved. I organise awareness drive. We go on the streets to let women know that there is help. We offer counselling and therapy. When you started, it was just a passion for advocacy but what is it like when you began to see really bad cases of violence and what bad case can you share with us? It is when, for whatever reason – which is not MXVWLĂ€DEOH D PDQ ORVHV FRQWURO DQG DFWXDOO\ EHDWV D woman to the point where she passes out; to the point where she breaks an arm; to the point where she has her face all bruised; then, the worst case scenario is when he takes a knife to her. It is very harrowing to see how another human being could deface, demean
a woman who is the mother of his children, whom he says he loves. At the end of the day, he wants his conjugal rights. The <RUXED DGDJH VD\V LI \RX GRQ¡W WUHDW PH ZHOO KRZ FDQ I pleasure you? It can be harrowing but with training, I have learnt to dissociate Laila from the issues. Initially, what was it like for you? Initially, it was very traumatic for me. In fact, I used WR IHHO OLNH JRLQJ WR Ă€JKW WR JLYH KLP D WDVWH RI KLV medicine. But then, with more studies, you have to stop being reactionary if you want to be of help. Rather, you start asking, why is this happening, what are the causative factors? What can be done to assist the couple? The essence is not to break the home; the essence is WR Ă€QG RXW ZKDW LV UHVSRQVLEOH DQG KRZ WR Ă€QG VROXWLRQV because, most times, the man who is violent has issues that can be traced backwards. The woman who stays in a violent relationship has issues too. But a lot of women would rather hang in there than walk away for fear of being scorned by family? You are right there but it is not only in Nigeria. Even societies where they have managed to overcome cultural biases, the woman endures violence because of her children. Sometimes, religion will say stay there and pray. Culturally, they say stay there because once you are married, you are married. Another thing is that those who mete out this violence are controllers. They subject another human being to beating because it feeds their ego as a man. The same ego that was subjected and bashed when they were young. And one

He will encourage her to do a business that she is in charge of her time. In some situations, the man might ask her to put a price to her staying at home. These are the exception to the rule. The ones that are controllers want to make sure that you do not have anything. They keep money away from you; they keep friends away from you. They talk GRZQ RQ \RXU IDPLO\ DQG E\ WKH WLPH WKH\ ÀQLVK \RX will be standing all alone. So, when the woman gets to the point where she is abused or violated, she has nowhere to turn to and she is without any money. So, lack of empowerment keeps them there. But all that is changing. My role is to make women aware of the things they can do. Besides awareness, is there any form of intervention - like providing shelter? There are many ways we intervene. We provide counselling and therapy and try to realign abused ZRPHQ SV\FKRORJLFDOO\ , DP DIÀOLDWHG WR RWKHU SHRSOH The person who handles rape (issues) like Itoro Anaba of the Mirabel Centre; she has all the equipment. In Nigeria, we have reasons to celebrate because we are not where we were 20 or 30 years ago. Gin A drink speaks volumes about your sense of style and occasion. A classic Martini is simplicity itself – yet conjures up images of James Bond, of languid cocktails and of elegant people dressed for an evening of opulence. And at the centre of it all – is usually a bottle of gin. $V RQH RI WKH PRVWO\ SRSXODU DQG ZLGHO\ GLVWULEXWHG VSLULWV JLQ LV ERWK UHÀQHG DQG GHÀQHG DQG FDUULHV DV PXFK KLVWRU\ DV LW GRHV à DYRXU *LQ LV D ZKLWH VSLULW à DYRUHG ZLWK MXQLSHU EHUULHV D KLJKO\ DURPDWLF EOXH JUHHQ EHUU\ RI WKH MXQLSHU D ORZ VOXQJ HYHUJUHHQ EXVK JHQXV -XQLSHUXV WKDW LV FRPPHUFLDOO\ JURZQ LQ QRUWKHUQ ,WDO\ &URDWLD WKH 8QLWHG 6WDWHV DQG &DQDGD *LQ LV DOVR à DYRXUHG ZLWK so-called botanicals and a varied assortment of herbs and spices including anise, angelica root, cinnamon, orange peel, coriander, and cassia bark. Gin has birthed many other cocktails – such as the famous Gin and Tonic, Dirty Martini and the Tom Collins and after several years of being seen as out-dated on the cocktail circuit, the drink is successfully re-acquiring old and new enthusiastic followers. All Gin and Genever makers have their own secret combination of botanicals, the number of which can range from as few as four to as many as 15. CLASSIFICATIONS OF GIN
slightly fruity, and very aromatic.
London Dry Gin is the dominant English style of Gin. As a style it lends itself particularly well to mixing.
Old Tom Gin is the last remaining example of the original lightly sweetened gins that were so popular in 18th-century England.
Plymouth Gin is relatively full-bodied (when compared to London Dry Gin). It is clear,
Genever or Hollands is the Dutch style of Gin.
HERE ARE 5 THINGS YOU DID NOT KNOW ABOUT GIN: 1. There are more classic cocktails made with Gin than with any other spirit. Where do we start? Negroni, Ramos Gin Fizz, Gin Rickey, Red Snapper, Tom Collins, White Lady, Hanky Panky, Clover Club, Alexander, French 75, Gimlet, Vesper, Singapore Sling, Silver Bronx, 3HJX &OXE %HH¡V .QHHV 6RXWKVLGH DQG OHW¡V not forget The Martinez. ‘LATE NIGHT WITH NIKE OSHINOWO’ SEASON ONE CURTAIN CALL By - Oscar Ochiogu The curtains fell on Season One of ‘Late Night with Nike Oshinowo’ at a swanky party held at the Moorhouse Sofitel recently. The lit poolside party glistened as the star of the night, Nike Oshinowo, glowed. With guests including members of the LNWNO production crew, sponsors, and partners and The Lagos State Government represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism & Intergovernmental Relations, Mr. Disun Holloway. Ms Oshinowo treated the audience to a jocular speech, as champagne flowed. In her typical fashion, Nike was flawless, unruffled and beautiful to the eye. It was pure delight to watch her do the ‘Shoki’ and take ‘Selfies’ with her guests. The night was a well deserved celebration of a successful first season and an exclusive peek preview of Season Two.
