City Councilmember Darlene Mealy gave the students the opportunity to create a building for a vacant lot located in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. The students used the blender platform to create gaming centers, water parks, universities, stores, basketball courts, performing arts centers, Walmax Plus, and much more. The use of the oculus made it possible to visually walk through each project. The students voted on the project they believed should be constructed on the vacant lot. The preforming arts center won the challenge.

Pipeline

Dr. Ronald E. McNair/P.S. 5 wanted to provide students with the importance of going to college and some of the experiences they would encounter. At Medgar Evers College, City University of New York, classes are arranged for our 4th and 5th grade students on campus two afternoons weekly. Students enrolled in three courses, technology, math, and science. Students created their own apps and engaged in math and science projects.

Gardening

Our community residents, restaurant partners, Saraghina & Grand Champs, have worked with the gardening team to build planters for vegetables and flowers.. We partner with Open Global Education, Technology and science Team in collaboration with IBM. Our students are partners in education, in agriculture, science, technology, climate change, and pollution monitoring. Students will engage in inquiry about their vegetables and plants with students and farmers in Africa and other parts of the world..

Students in the cooking and restaurant programs will utilize vegetables from the school garden and other healthy food choices to prepare in their restaurant. Students will design the restaurant in the STEM program. Proceeds from the restaurant will go to support the “Shower Bus” initiative and a new program of choice.

In the news

Two young Bedford Stuyvesant activists have thrown their voices behind bringing a shower bus to Brooklyn for the borough's homeless community. Jada Warren, 10, and Serenity Dixon, 11, who have just graduated P.S.5 Dr. Ronald McNair Public School, dedicated their 5th-grade project to getting public support for a bus furnished with shower cubicles that would provide homeless people with a dedicated place to wash. After studying human rights in class and attending the annual WE Day for young change-makers, the girls were motivated to do something positive for their community.
