ANNUAL REPORT VANGUARD UNIVERSITY
16/17
Letter from the President
2
annual report 1 6 / 1 7
Most people will look at a tree's leaves to understand its overall health. The truth, though, is that the health of a tree is best seen by cutting the trunk and observing its rings. With each season in the life a tree, a new layer grows and a new ring appears. Trees with more rings show a longer lifespan, and trees with thick rings show sturdy health. If Vanguard University was a tree, our rings would be both many and thick, demonstrating the dense heritage and deep health of the institution. For nearly a decade, Vanguard has experienced mighty winds and nourishing sunshine, while continuing to yield fruit and remain steadfastly planted in the rich soil of our Assemblies of God denomination. Today, we have rich, leafy foliage; a representation for our financial sustainability, as well as our vibrant programs and dedicated community of staff, faculty, donors, friends, alumni, and, of course, our hard-working students. The true health of our institution, though, rests on the strength of our roots: our mission to seek truth, act virtuously, and serve and lead like Christ. We are approaching our centennial anniversary steadfastly, and there are great opportunities on our horizon. With serving our students and God at the center of our hearts and minds, we will continue developing our campus and programs into those that cultivate academic excellence, authentic community, and Christ-centered leadership and service.

A Diverse, Global Perspective
4
annual report 1 6 / 1 7
Each year, Vanguard University continues to explore new ways to honor and respect our diverse community and ensure all within it feel welcome and supported. Thanks to its Pentecostal roots, Vanguard has a strong heritage of diversity and was one of the first Hispanic Serving institutions in the county. Vanguard currently is welcoming a “majority minority” student body, as 62% of incoming freshmen are from underrepresented populations. Vanguard is a leader in the national conversation on race and ethnicity in higher education, a position it continues by fostering healthy on-campus dialogues with students by hosting diverse speakers and monthly Courageous Conversations. “A global perspective is key to Vanguard’s vision and mission," said Dr. April Harris Akinloye, Chief Diversity Officer and Courageous Conversations Facilitator. "We want our students to learn from the mishaps and mess-ups of interacting with people from different backgrounds, be it culture, denominations, social and economic status, gender, ability, whatever it may be. We focus on helping students become not just tolerant, but inclusive. Vanguard is the place where that training starts and where that concept is demonstrated.” Vanguard also focuses on spiritually caring for diverse students. Director of Vanguard’s Institute for Faculty Development and alumnus Dr. Pete Menjares highlights the importance of diverse chapel programming in the 2017 book, Diversity Matters: Race, Ethnicity and the Future of Christian Higher Education. His contribution explores the importance of offering a variety of chapel and spiritual life programs that features the wider Christian church and honors students’ multicultural backgrounds, a concept to which Vanguard closely adheres.

Cultivating Character and Industry Leaders
6
annual report 1 6 / 1 7
For more than 45 years, Vanguard University’s business department has been led by faculty who challenge students to think critically, to integrate faith into all aspects of business, and to uphold a strong moral character. The strength of the department increased this year as Bjorn Jonsson, Vanguard alumnus and former Vice President of International Sales for GUNNAR Optiks, joined the full-time team. Jonsson’s career also has included senior executive roles with notable brands including Oakley and Boost Mobile, where he led all international sales and marketing efforts. He also has served as a board member for the Vanguard Athletic Board and on the Board of Directors for Santa Margarita Little league, as well as an adjunct professor at Vanguard. With courses that weigh heavily on interaction with industry titans and leaders, Jonsson’s approach in the classroom is to ensure his students remain inquisitive in their journeys to becoming successful businesspeople who have high moral character. “I constantly urge my students to embrace adversity, rather than try to avoid it,” said Jonsson. “Just as the thorn in Paul’s flesh reminded him of God’s strength in his weakness (2 Corinthians 12:7-9), the challenges we face in life and in the boardroom can forge us into the tools by which God fulfills his plans.” Jonsson continues returning to Vanguard for a simple, yet profound, reason: the faculty care about their students. “Our faculty really pour into our students. That was true when I was a student and it’s still true today,” Jonsson said. “Just like healthy families invest in the well-being of one another, my teachers – now colleagues – truly invested in me and were always approachable. This is the legacy I hope to leave with my students.”

Hands-On Experience, Hands-On Leadership
8
annual report 1 6 / 1 7
When St. Jude Medical Center sought a university partner to offer advanced nursing degrees to its medical staff, a focus on education and leadership, professor-mentor relationships, and online courses won the Vanguard University Masters of Science in Nursing program the spot. Thanks to the accredited program, which welcomed its first cohort in Fall 2017, nurses at St. Jude Medical Center now have hands-on experience through Vanguard's simulated nursing lab, which features patient care equipment and simulation mannequins. The student-nurses also receive hands-on leadership, thanks to dedicated faculty members like Dr. Mary Wickman, interim dean of graduate studies and chair of the nursing department, and Dr. Annette Callis, associate professor of nursing and coordinator of offsite MSN programs at Vanguard. "It's an honor to lead a program that helps caregivers in the medical field looking to advance their careers, change policies to improve and meet the needs of their workplace, and improve their overall professionalism," said Dr. Callis. "The unfortunate truth is that there is a local and national shortage of nurses because there aren't enough teachers to teach them. I know we're helping fix this problem, as well as support nurses who desire to live out the passion of the cross through their passion for helping hurting people."

Letter from the CFO At Vanguard, we constantly evaluate how to best steward the resources required to fuel our mission. We’re blessed by wise leadership from President Beals, just as we are blessed to have a community of faithful colleagues that supports our vision to pursue financial health as an institution. Whether we’re expanding an academic program or renovating a building, each financial decision is evaluated in light of its opportunity cost and its potential to positively impact the students we serve. We truly have been doing our part internally this year, and God has poured out His blessing as a result. We’ve seen His hand on Vanguard in the diversification of revenue through an increase in contributions from $1.6 million last year to $5.2 million this year, as well as in reaching a new milestone for our endowment, which has exceeded $5 million for the first time in our history. We are also humbled and happy to report that our long-term debt was under $15 million at June 30, 2017. We also thank God for the eight-year reaffirmation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, who commended us for improving our financial status over the past five years, including significant increase in unrestricted net assets, a significant reduction in liabilities, and improved key financial ratios. We are grateful to be approaching our 100th anniversary with these signs of internal health, which allow us to plan for future capital campaigns and improvements to Vanguard’s campus. As we move toward this momentous celebration, we will continue our commitment to stewarding our financial resources well. We can’t wait to see Vanguard’s continued growth over the next year.

Letter from the Vice President for University Advancement What a year we've had! Since we began our last fiscal season, it's been my joy to experience miracle after miracle at Vanguard University. With the completion of every step in the journey toward securing what's next for Vanguard, we recognize and celebrate the people, programs, and prayers that have brought us there. Lovingly, I call each of these triumphs a "God story," as I know He's laying our foundation, guiding our paths, and building the future of our institution. We experience true success when we see God win. Thanks to our generous community, our God stories were overwhelming this year. It was such a thrill to watch the first pitch thrown on the renovated, renamed, and now pro-style Dean Harvey Field – and I will never forget seeing students' faces light up during our Annual Scholarship Reception as they met the proud donors whose generosity has enabled them to attend Vanguard. With equal excitement and anticipation, I look forward to cutting the ribbon on our newly renovated Lyceum Theater next month, and to seeing plans to improve Vanguard's campus, programs, and student resources come to fruition. It is with trust and confidence that we look ahead to the next 100 years of God's faithfulness and blessings on Vanguard. His provision, through your support and generosity, have brought us to our current financial stability. Thank you for trusting God, supporting Vanguard, and ensuring each interested student has access to academic excellence and a spirit-empowered life in Christ. Gratefully,
JUSTIN MCINTEE VICE PRESIDENT FOR UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT
