Letter From the President For nearly 100 years, Vanguard University has existed to serve God, and to teach, equip, and empower our students to pursue their calling and find their true self. As we look ahead to the next century of the Vanguard story, we remain committed to our vision of becoming a nationally recognized leader in Christian higher education by cultivating academic excellence, character development, and global perspective as seeds of greatness in the life of every student. As these seeds come to fruition throughout their lives, Vanguard continues to deeply impact their future. Each year offers another opportunity to serve and care for our diverse students. We grow and adapt, ensuring that we have the facilities, programs, services, and resources needed so our students are equipped to walk in the calling God has for them. All that we do – whether breaking ground on new buildings, renovating athletic fields, expanding academic programs, or developing funds for organizational innovation – enables us to better serve and shepherd our students with excellence. We also seek to steward the financial support we receive to the highest standards, ensuring we remain fiscally sustainable. We also continue to engage our community of alumni, staff and faculty, and university partners to ensure every interested and qualified student has access to the transformative education for which Vanguard is known. With another year of victories behind us, we lead forward by serving our students with truth, virtue, and service at the heart of all we do. There are exciting adventures ahead, and we are grateful for your ongoing partnership as we continue on the journey God has for Vanguard. Serving with you,

DR. MICHAEL J. BEALS (’81, MA ’89) PRESIDENT, VANGUARD UNIVERSITY

Expanding Academic Programs With student growth and experience at the core of what we do, Vanguard University remains committed to academic excellence. In addition to adding two new programs – Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences and Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Vanguard continues to strengthen our programs through the development and achievements of our faculty. This includes: » Dr. Frank D. Macchia published his latest book, Jesus the Spirit Baptizer: Christology in Light of Pentecost (Eerdmans, 2018). This book by one of our most renowned scholars represents another significant contribution to the field of Pentecostal scholarship by Dr. Macchia. » Dr. Jackie Parke has been collaborating with two child-and-adolescent psychologist colleagues on refugee research for the past few years. They were in Lebanon together in March 2018 to train Lebanese mental health professionals serving Syrian refugee youth. Dr. Parke and her collaborators shared their research by presenting a poster at the National Conference in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. » Dr. Bonni Stachowiak recently was a keynote speaker at the University of Houston College of Education’s Learning, Design, and Technology Conference. Her talk was entitled: CREATE. » Drs. Mary Wickman and Annette Callis traveled to San Diego to attend the California Organization of Associate Degree Nursing/California Association of Colleges of Nursing Joint Fall 2018 Conference in October 2018. » In September 2018, ESCALA Educational Services Inc., a professional development consortium that focuses on Hispanic Serving Institutions, facilitated a two-day reflective retreat for approximately 35 faculty, staff, and administrators at Vanguard. The overarching goal of the gathering was to come to consensus on what it means to be an asset-based, equityoriented Hispanic Serving Institution.

Building the Future As Vanguard University enters its centennial year, the next chapter of our story begins to unfold with the building of our student center. The groundbreaking event on October 5, 2018 marked a historic moment: another visual representation of God’s goodness and faithfulness to continue the work and global impact of Vanguard University. Opening in spring 2020, the student center will be far more than another building. It will be a place to further Vanguard’s mission and create much-needed space for our students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members to connect under one roof. This space will be designed to serve the whole person: mentally, emotionally, relationally, physically, and spiritually. It will have a world-class fitness center, recreational center, dining hall, food service area, lounge, and study areas to serve as an inviting “living room” experience. But these are just venues to create what is most important: a place to share God stories, encourage one another, explore career and academic goals, and deepen faith. Vanguard University also recently saw much-needed updates to two pillars on campus: the Lyceum Theater and newly named Dean Harvey Baseball Field. Supported entirely by donations, both projects are testimonies of God’s faithfulness through our generous community.

Impacting Our Community Vanguard University students, staff, faculty, and alumni remain committed to serving not just around the globe, but in our local community. In the 2017/2018 academic year, 84 students served and studied in twelve programs across the United States and in nine countries. They painted, paved, prayed, and played in schools, churches, and ministries, extending Vanguard’s impact across the country. Furthering Vanguard’s commitment to making a global impact, the university hosted its fourth annual “Global Education and Outreach (GEO) Week.” During the five-day event, students were empowered and challenged to use their education and skillsets to meet Kingdom needs. They attended chapels, workshops on raising financial support, individual coaching on applying for passports, and panel sessions focused on how other countries view mental health. Other opportunities during GEO week included tasting international food and beverage, praying for our world, participating in service projects, and even riding a camel! Students, faculty, staff, and alumni also gathered to serve one of their own during the sixth annual Run for Mercy. The event, which was a color run for the first time in its history, benefitted Dawn (Murtagh ‘02) Mandville and her family, who lost their patriarch, Jared ’00 to stage-four lung cancer in 2015. More than 100 runners attended, raising nearly $10,000 for the Mandville family. Throughout its five years, the Run for Mercy has raised more than $30,000 for Vanguard alumni in need.

Athletic Achievements The roar of a crowd is common at a Vanguard Athletics event. However, that roar is now louder, thanks to junior softball player and Program Board Athletics Director Emily Howard, who has started a new student-led spirit section called “The Roar.” Now, if you attend a Vanguard sporting event and shout “Lions,” most students will yell back “claws up” with arms crossed in the air, “claws” out, and game faces on. “The Roar” attends both home and away games, showing support for teams. Vanguard Athletics programs have much to cheer for, including a newly renovated baseball field named after Dean Harvey, new STUNT team, the addition of golf and beach volleyball, as well as having all five fall teams – women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s cross country – represented at the NAIA National Championships. Also worthy of celebration, the women’s basketball team opened the 2018 season being ranked number one in the nation, while women’s cross country and men’s and women’s soccer won the GSAC championship.

Letter From the CFO The University Strategic Plan has five strategic priorities. Three of these are Construct Excellent Facilities, Grow Enrollment to 2,700, and Strengthen Financial Sustainability. I’m happy to report we are making progress on all three of these priorities. The fall term was busy with construction as we completed two donorfunded projects: an $850,000 renovation of the newly named Dean Harvey baseball field and a $650,000 renovation of the Lyceum Theater. We replaced about 11,000 square feet of aged modulars with new ones, and moved two graduate programs offsite to office spaces in Santa Ana. Finally, we finished plans for a new $28 million student center, which broke ground over the summer and is expected to be open spring 2020. At June 30, 2018 we had received $8.5 million in pledges towards our $12.9 million Imagine: The Campaign for Vanguard University goal. Vanguard also recently went through Robert Dickeson’s Program Prioritization to create a system of institutional self-evaluation that helps us determine how to grow and manage change and opportunity. These changes will help improve students’ growth as we become more missionally aligned, financially sustainable, academically excellent, and organized for innovation. This prioritization plan created a three-year roadmap for us to reduce costs and reallocate funds to innovation and improvement. We began implementation this year, reducing expenses $600,000 and reallocating another $700,000 for innovation and improvement. Overall, long-term debt decreased from $14.9 million to $12.4 million, which is similar to our debt level in 1996 when I was a student here. God is good!

Letter From the Vice President for University Advancement As I look back on the last year, I am overwhelmed by God’s faithfulness! Each year brings new miracles and God-sized victories to Vanguard, and it’s my honor to witness them. Just 10 months after we began fundraising for what would become Imagine: The Campaign for Vanguard University, I am thrilled to share that we’re currently nearing the $10 million mark on our $12.9 million goal. We recently broke ground on the student center, which served as a historic moment in Vanguard’s nearly 100-year history. As I reflect on the day, I am reminded of God’s faithfulness to Vanguard University over the last century, as well as His blessings through your continued support. Our last fiscal year also brought blessings in the form of grants to support our STEM programs. We received a $300,000 grant from Fletcher Jones to fund a new Outdoor Learning Lab that will open this summer with a greenhouse, butterfly conservatory, and aquaponics area. Edison International also recently awarded Vanguard with a $25,000 grant to support Summer Undergraduate Research Program, a 10-week summer intensive research experience. We could not celebrate these wins without our generous community of donors, alumni, and friends. I am especially grateful for our volunteer leaders, who have made it their personal goals to ensure Vanguard has the resources needed to fund our mission of ensuring students have access to the Spirit-empowered, Christ-centered education for which Vanguard is known. Thank you for allowing God to use you to bless Vanguard. You are God’s provision and love to our community! Gratefully,

JUSTIN MCINTEE (’98, MBA ’09) VICE PRESIDENT FOR UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT
