MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

AT VANGUARD YOUR STORY MATTERS. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? WHAT ARE THE EXPERIENCES GOD HAS USED TO SHAPE AND PREPARE YOU? WE CARE ABOUT YOUR STORY, ABOUT WHO GOD IS MAKING YOU TO BE. AND WE WANT TO EQUIP YOU— TO GIVE YOU THE SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND EXPERIENCE YOU NEED—FOR THE JOURNEY GOD HAS SPECIFICALLY FOR YOU.

This has been an exciting year in the life of Vanguard University! Presiding over this season of growth fills me with gratitude and expectancy, and I can’t wait to see how God continues to use the lives of Vanguard’s students, faculty, staff, and alumni to serve His glorious purposes. Major construction is underway on our campus, as we broke ground this fall on a large-scale renovation and expansion of the Scott Academic Center, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015. The beautiful transformation of this building will give Vanguard a bold new visual identity in the community and develop state-of-the-art space for programs like the Veterans Resource Center, the Global Center for Women and Justice, and the Nursing Center. This impressive project has been made possible by a large and generous community of donors, including alumni, business leaders, and many others who believe in the mission of the University. Vanguard University’s men’s basketball team made headlines on the national athletics stage with an inspiring run to its first-ever NAIA Division I National Championship title. The team combined hard work and athletic excellence with dignity and sportsmanship, and its accomplishments were emblematic of the commitment of the coaches, athletes, and trainers in Vanguard’s entire athletic department. As we continue to pursue a growing student population at Vanguard through strong recruitment and enrollment efforts, we will stand on a foundation of more than 90 Spirit-empowered years of Christcentered leadership while we look beyond to where God is calling us!

A SCIENTIST OF FAITH AND PERSEVERANCE

:beyond academics “WHETHER IN A WHITE LAB COAT OR WHILE MANAGING PROJECTS AT A TOP PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY, DR. JULIE HOYE IS PROUD TO BE EXPLORING HOW THE LEADING EDGE OF SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY CAN SERVE THE NEEDS OF HUMAN HEALTH.” — JULIE (HARRIS ’02) HOYE, PhD

When Julie (Harris ‘02) Hoye arrived at Vanguard University, the mentorship she received from biology professor Dr. Cecil Miller and chemistry professor Dr. Don Lorance opened her eyes to a vast world of opportunities for students with a biology and chemistry degree. After landing a spot in an undergraduate research fellowship at Cal State Fullerton and touring the labs of a pharmaceutical company while a Vanguard student, Julie went on to earn a PhD from the University of Arizona in Pharmaceutical Science. Dr. Miller’s and Dr. Lorance’s mentorship followed her there. “They were there for me all the time,” says Julie. “Whenever I was discouraged and overwhelmed in graduate school, they encouraged me.” After many years of doing research for oncology and diabetes, Julie transitioned out of the lab into project management. She now works for a company that studies viruses and manufactures vaccines, contributing to research for future cancer therapies. Julie’s time at Vanguard and in graduate school did more than prepare her for a future career. “While at Vanguard and during my PhD work, God became very real to me,” she says. “I felt like a failure so often, but God picked me up and gave me strength to go on.”

THE LEARNING RELATIONSHIPS THAT ARE FORMED DURING THIS SHARED QUEST WILL LAST FOR A LIFETIME. THIS IS THE VANGUARD LEARNING EXPERIENCE.

in interviews after the game, he kept his focus on more intangible achievements. “It feels amazing,” he said. “We just praise God. We said before this game, win or lose, that we’re going to give Him the glory, because He made this a special season. Our guys believed from day one. They have a strong faith in each other.” A week after the title game, Vanguard hosted a rally called “A Season of Significance,” which gave the community an opportunity to celebrate the excellence of the women’s basketball team in addition to the men’s team. Vanguard’s women spent their entire undefeated season ranked number one en route to the GSAC Championship, coach Russ Davis won his third NAIA Coach of the Year, and point guard Nicole Ballestero received NAIA Player of the Year honors. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters packed The Pit for the rally, where various coaches, athletic staff, and Vanguard president Michael Beals gave short speeches thanking the individuals who supported the teams along the way and congratulating the teams on conducting their championship seasons with character and excellence.

THE VETERANS RESOURCE CENTER

:beyond leadership AFTER EIGHT YEARS IN THE MILITARY, TWO DEPLOYMENTS TO IRAQ, AND A BRONZE STAR MEDAL AMONG OTHER HONORS, CHRISTOPHER MICHAEL KUPITZ RETURNED TO THE UNITED STATES A DEEPLY DAMAGED MAN. FORTUNATELY, HIS SEARCH FOR A WAY TO SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITION TO LIFE AFTER THE ARMY BROUGHT HIM TO VANGUARD UNIVERSITY.

Christopher Kupitz’s story is one of unique brokenness and unique healing, authored by God and potently augmented by Vanguard, its faculty, and its Veterans Resource Center. At the conclusion of his military service, Christopher had few options in civilian life, so he enrolled at Vanguard, where everything changed. “Vanguard became a place of healing for me,” says Christopher. “When they asked about my story, I realized that the people here cared about who I am and who I was. ‘Your story matters’ is the best phrase for the returning soldier. You just need one person willing to invest in your future. The Veterans Resource Center reaches out to veterans and shows them that it’s okay to ask for help and to receive help.” Now after having graduated, Christopher’s story is coming full circle. He is applying to Fuller Theological Seminary in order to become a military chaplain. He once vowed that he would never go on another deployment. But now he sees God’s hand in preparing him all along. “I would always pray, ‘Use me Lord, send me,’” he says. “I had always fought against the idea that I’d become a pastor, even though I joined the Army seeing it as a mission field, and now I feel like God is sending me right back there specifically to minister to other soldiers. There is nothing in this world I haven’t gone through. God used Vanguard University to bring me out of despair and to thrive, and God has been preparing me all along to be this man, and to do this job.”

THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE

:beyond integration MUSIC STUDENT JENNY CHEN OFTEN CAN’T BELIEVE HOW FAR SHE’S COME AS A RESULT OF ATTENDING VANGUARD UNIVERSITY, NOT THE LEAST BECAUSE SHE CAME ALL THE WAY FROM GUANGZHOU, CHINA.

A viola performance major in the music department, Jenny first heard about Vanguard from the parents of Dr. James Melton, Vanguard’s Chair of the Department of Music, who were holding a Bible study in Guangzhou that Jenny attended. After later meeting with Dr. Melton, Jenny’s dream of studying in the United States came to fruition through Vanguard. The community at Vanguard has made Jenny’s transition as an international student much easier. “I had never experienced a Christian community before. In China, I know other believers, but there’s no such thing as a Christian school. People here are so nice, friendly, willing to help, and accepting.” Jenny developed great relationships with a number of faculty, including Dr. Melton, Teresa Dovel, and Tiffany Rogan. The experience of receiving her education in music from a Christian university in the United States has been demanding and rewarding for Jenny, especially as she’s been able to explore the true freedom to honor the Lord with her gifts. “I play with the worship team at Vanguard and outside of school,” she says. “I want to use music to touch people and express my worship to the Lord. I feel connected to him when I play to him.”

GLOBAL CENTER FOR WOMEN AND JUSTICE

:beyond the classroom HAVING ALREADY CULTIVATED A PASSION TO FIGHT HUMAN TRAFFICKING AS A YOUNG STUDENT, BARBARA ISAAC CAME TO VANGUARD UNIVERSITY AND CONNECTED WITH DR. SANDRA MORGAN, IMMEDIATELY BECOMING INVOLVED IN THE GLOBAL CENTER FOR WOMEN AND JUSTICE.

This last year Barbara served as the president of the student group Live2Free, a branch of the GCWJ that advocates and educates about women’s rights and against human trafficking. “Live2Free provides an opportunity for students to have a voice, speaking out about human trafficking issues,” says Barbara. “We go to high schools all over Southern California and give presentations to students about what human trafficking is, how prevalent it is right here in Orange County, and how they can get involved.” Over the last six years, the GCWJ and Live2Free students have presented to 30,000 young people in Orange County, and Barbara has been able to see the influence the club has had on high school and college students. “I’ve seen so many confirmations that we’re making an impact,” says Barbara, now a junior at Vanguard. “We put together a huge event last year at Vanguard to help educate the community, and so many people came, even from other campuses, and felt empowered to do something to help.” In the summer Barbara traveled with the GCWJ to Italy, where she attended a trafficking conference and helped train non-government organizations (NGO) through Hands That Heal, which is a curriculum designed to coach caregivers in providing effective aftercare to victims and survivors of human trafficking. Barbara is thankful for the opportunity to be involved in such important, life-changing work as a student. “I’m really lucky to go to a school that has the Global Center for Women and Justice,” she says. “It’s a big deal, and I’m thrilled and grateful to be a part of it.”

LETTER FROM CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER: God has shown his favor and faithfulness to Vanguard University this past year. Beginning with our exit from financial exigency in June 2013 and continuing with the largest undergraduate enrollment in Vanguard’s history, our financial position has significantly improved. We launched our Through These Doors capital campaign, with the goal of raising $7 million toward a renovation of the Scott Academic Center, and continued to focus on debt reduction and increasing the university endowment. Major campus improvement projects included the completion of a 3-year $3 million renovation of our men’s freshman dormitory and a $2 million conversion of our soccer field to turf, which included the addition of 3 futsal courts. Vanguard finished the year with a 50% growth in Net Assets over the prior year, and we feel confident that this is just the beginning of what God has in store for Vanguard University as we continue our mission to equip each student for a Spiritempowered life of Christ-centered leadership and service. We look forward to reaching our goal for the Through These Doors capital campaign and completing the renovation of the Scott Academic Center by the end of 2015.
