vanguard university annual report
: a letter from the president As we get closer to our vision of becoming a nationally recognized leader in Christian higher education we have an increasing responsibility to be not just academically relevant, but to be spiritually relevant as well. Such a commitment demands a breadth of excellence not required of other organizations. When our students arrive for the first day of class, they bring us their minds and their hearts – and the moral obligation to steward and shepherd each. By continuously pouring into the lives of these students, through mentorship, through prayer, through curricula that teach not just knowledge but also wisdom, we are meeting that obligation, preparing our students, and supporting our alumni and partners to lead spirit-filled lives of Christ-centered leadership and service.
It is in light of this high calling that I am honored to share with you the outlook from the 2015-2016 academic year. We remain relentless in our pursuit of academic excellence, character development, and a global perspective – as well as in the wise stewardship of the financial resources that make it all possible. We have much to celebrate. For that, I am thankful to each one of you for the contributions that have made our successes possible. I am humbled by your dedication to our shared mission and your commitment to virtue, truth and service. I look forward to continued collaboration as we work together to create an even brighter future for our School and our students, alumni, and partners.
Dr. Michael J. Beals President

: building character The athletics’ GOLD PRIDE program, initiated by former athletic director, Bob Wilson, is making a mark on student athletes. Each student athlete at Vanguard takes a required class called “Champions of Character,” where the basics of character, integrity, servant leadership, responsibility and respect are the primary subjects. Small groups are formed among athletes, led by coaches and encouraged by athletic director, Rhett Soliday. These small groups walk the walk—even heading back to campus early from vacation to serve the Costa Mesa community at places like Second Harvest Food Bank.
The transformative power of GOLD PRIDE is apparent on a daily basis. A good example is a beloved student from the class of 2015. This beloved player, grew up with a difficult background family life and an unwavering dream of playing baseball. Although he made some bad choices along the way (using drugs and alcohol), he enrolled to play baseball for a local community college—and was then recruited by Vanguard University’s athletics program, where his life would quickly change. Just weeks after enrolling, this student turned his life around after getting involved with Vanguard’s reputable studentathlete program, GOLD PRIDE. This young man, who was at one time headed down a difficult, tumultuous path, is now a Vanguard graduate, working as a kinesiology professional on the East Coast, and has a strong relationship with the Lord. “We give all of the credit to God, who is using us as coaches to pour into our students,” said head baseball coach, Rob Pegg. “That’s why students can walk away from Vanguard saying it changed their lives.”

of five new buildings. “Our goal in constructing excellent facilities on campus is to match the student experience at our great Christian institution. We will serve our students and honor the legacy of Vanguard, while also preparing Vanguard for a vibrant future, said Dr. Tim Young who serves as Vice President for Student Affairs and has led the community through the visioning process thus far. A new gym, student union, and science building are included in phase one of the plan, while a robust campus quad, new learning resource center, and residence hall are also in consideration. Each building is engineered specifically to help Vanguard achieve its mission and to revitalize the campus, ensuring that the quality of our facilities will soon match the quality of our academics.

: setting the stage One of only a handful of colleges and universities accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), Vanguard University’s department of theatre arts maintains its reputation and ability to attract stellar students, and to cultivate talented, capable theatre professionals. But maintaining this esteemed accreditation from NAST doesn’t come without work and a strong sense of commitment – to both the program and the facilities.
This year, for the first time, five scholarships were given to top musical theatre students, bolstering the musical theatre emphasis within the fine arts program. Already, Theatre Department Chair Susan Berkompas, has seen positive shift. “These scholarships have singlehandedly changed the talent that has come our way and impacted the musical theatre program,” Berkompas said. “You can see the quality change in our musicals–you can only do so much when you don’t have the right students coming in. You have to have the students who are born to do this for all of their lives. When you start attracting and pursuing the right kind of student who has the passion and the skill, that is what changes the scope of your program.” In addition, the department has moved to producing more than half of the season’s shows to be musicals, and added dance and private dance instruction for students in the program. The next step is adding a space to house these new programs, and attract more of the top-notch students that the program can now accommodate. Renovation and safety to the backstage areas of the Lyceum Theater, adding nearby restrooms for patrons of shows on campus, and clearing the trailer space in the back is needed as well. “We can’t get the top-notch students without a top-notch facility,” said Berkompas. “The program deserves this and the students do too.”

Vanguard University has been blessed with strong leadership from President Beals, and the faithful stewardship of our financial resources within the community. At Vanguard, our finances fuel our mission. That is why every decision, whether it be adding a new academic program or expanding our athletic programs, is evaluated in light of its opportunity cost and its potential to positively impact the students we serve. In a climate of high-leverage and debt-funded growth, our leadership has courageously maintained its commitment to aggressively reduce our debt, which is now below $16 million. This commitment has resulted in a 50% reduction since 2008, even during a period where we completed a full remodel of Huntington Hall and a remodel/expansion on the Scott Academic Center. Additionally, our high standards for financial integrity and accountability earned the school accreditation through Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA). In the accreditation process we were objectively assessed in seven key standards of responsible stewardship. These standards include: a commitment to operating in accordance with biblical truths and practices; submitting to the governance of a healthy board; the transparency through the availability of financial statements; evidence of appropriate management controls to ensure resources are utilized responsibly; impartial policies for internal decision-making; and the honorable stewardship of all charitable gifts. I am pleased to report that, based on these criteria, Vanguard University received accreditation from ECFA. These signs of internal health are preparing the foundation for future capital campaigns and improvements to Vanguard University’s campus. We’ve been attracting high quality staff and volunteers, and these individuals have been continually working to help Vanguard achieve the next level of excellence. It is truly an exciting season.

: a letter from the vice president for university advancement An annual report is a time to reflect. Not just on the accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff – which have been many – but on the continued blessings that have been poured out across our campus. This year has been a success and we have seen God’s faithfulness in every story, every student, and every step we take as a community. With strong leadership and a healthy financial stance, we are thrilled to be at the lowest level of debt in almost two decades. Our athletics programs are thriving, our fine arts has drawn in a new class of talent, and a new master plan for growing the university is coming into place. God is good. With a bright outlook of what is ahead, we remain committed to our foundational values of truth, virtue and service. Developing critical thinkers, who are committed to Christ, and serving our community with purpose is paramount. And your generosity plays a major role in making this possible, to serve our students well. We look to a new fiscal year with enthusiasm. Vanguard University’s unique contribution to higher education—promoting academic excellence, providing professor-mentors, and cultivating a Spirit-empowered life in Christ—is what creates these seeds of greatness in the life of every student, and we are blessed that you are a part of that. Thank you for your support!
