Billing systems have always been central to communications service provider (CSP) operations. The first modern CSP billing systems were deployed in the 1960s. In the early days, such systems were mostly developed by the CSPs themselves and were quite basic in what
they could do. Billing supported a single service type and all charges were billed monthly. It was not until the 1980s that CSPs started considering billing systems from third party vendors.
