Traffic in the Philippines 2015 It's official. As of Oct 1, 2015, our country has the worst traffic in the world and Manila has the worst traffic on Earth! This is certainly not something we can brag about. It's something we need to reflect on and think of, so we can come up with ways on how this problem could be overcome. I know that this country of ours has other problems that need attention like corruption and poverty but if you think about it, if a seemingly minor issue like traffic could not be resolved, then how much more would we be able to solve this country's major setbacks? Moreover, the chaos and disorder that this traffic bring us reflects on what kind of lives we, Filipinos, live. It's time we do something about this and bring order because at the end of the day, we are the ones who are negatively affected by it all.

In fairness to our government, efforts are now being made to alleviate and neutralize this mess. Total truck ban is being enforced in the busiest NCR areas and the PNP-HPG is taking over EDSA. From our end, we, citizens, should also do our part and help out. No matter how small, if each of us contributes for the betterment of any pursuit, there's nothing we could not conquer. Filipinos, we can! Happy reading, cheers!

Holy Family Parish: Catholic Landmark in Kananga A pious practice amongst Catholics is to write “J.M.J.” as a reference to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as the Holy Family. Decades back, my religion teacher inculcated in my “Christian mind” that the Holy Family consists of the very famous and well-loved biblical characters - that of the Child Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph. Gospel truth speaks little of the life of the Holy Family in the years before Jesus’ public ministry. All that is known are the sojourn in Egypt, the return to Nazareth, and the incident that occurred when the 12-year old boy accompanied his parents to Jerusalem. The Holy Family is the patron of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The Holy Cross Sisters are dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Holy Cross Brothers to Saint Joseph, and the Priests of the Holy Cross to the Sacred Heart, while the Sons of the Holy Family are also a religious congregation devoted to the Holy Family. Veneration to the Holy Family formally began in the 17th century by Saint Francois de Laval, the first bishop of New France, who founded a confraternity. The rest is history, so to speak.
Rev. Fr. Albert T. Opiniano, parish priest of Holy Family Parish
Amidst a vast fertile agricultural land lies a quaint and peaceful second class municipality in the province of Leyte, named Kananga. It is approximately 24 km north of Ormoc City (30-minute land travel), 85 km from Tacloban City (1 1/2-hour land travel), and 993 km or 25-hour trip from the heart of the City of Manila cruising the

Maharlika Highway, and passing the famous San Juanico Bridge (the bridge that connects the Province of Leyte to the Province of Samar). On February 14, 2015, Rev. Fr. Albert T. Opiniano was installed as the 26th parish priest of Kananga’s Holy Family Parish in succession since its inception in 1952 as a mission station. The Holy Family Parish (HFP) was formally declared a parish with Rev. Fr. Manuel Colasito as the first parish priest on July 9, 1959. When I entered the modest HFP that Sunday morning of July 19, 2015 for the 7am Holy mass officiated by Fr. Opiniano, I was struck at the stained-glass windows, the beautiful main altar, the very impressive tabernacle, the life-sized statues of the Sagrada Familia, statues of several saints like that of San Lorenzo Ruiz, San Pedro Calungsod, Santo Niño in red cape encased in a glass frame, Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Santo Entiero. Conspicuously noticeable also was the standard glass frame of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, banners of Mama Mary with the Christ Child

Jesus, antiques 14 Stations of the Cross, one confession box, and pews made of narra wood, and moreso, at the lighting fixtures (chandeliers). Although I hardly speak Waray and Cebuano dialects, I definitely understood his homily in Visayan parlance which centered on the importance of Sunday mass to all and sundry, and the goodness of the Sagrada Familia in the growth of one’s Christian life. The angelic voices of the HFP choir impressed me! Their version of the Lord’s Prayer and Sunday’s mass hymns were distinctively notable. Father Albert was assisted by his lay ministers (Eucharistic ministers) in the communion proper. The churchgoers were dressed to a T and they participated in singing mass hymns. Some members of the Knights of Columbus served as collectors, while the altar boys assisted the mass-presider with the sacred chalice, bread, wine and water during the offertory. I witnessed the solemn ceremony of the “Commissioning of Catechist” which consists of 50 religious individuals who pledged to spread the “Good News”, God’s unconditional love, magnanimous mercy and overflowing compassion. Fr. Albert presided the oath of office of the catechists. After the mass, Fr. Albert or Fr. Nene to his family, close friends and parishioners obliged to a têteà-tête with this writer. “I have been a priest for the past 33 years. I served as parish priest in Javier’s Saint Michael the Archangel Parish from 1984 to 1989, Mac Arthur’s Saint Isidore Labrador Parish from 1989-1995, Dagami’s Saint Joseph Parish in 19952000, Saint Francis Xavier Parish in Abuyog from 2000-2006, and from 2006 to February 10, 2015, I was assigned at Palompon’s Saint Francis Xavier Parish. This is now my 6th post as a parish priest here in Kananga,” his opening spiel when I asked his past posts as parish priest.
Fr. Nene is under the Diocese of Palo. Most Reverend John Forrosuello Du, D.D., is the Archbishop of Palo. “Rev. Fr. Eugene B. Almamento is the HFP parochial vicar, while Rev. Fr. Vox Arvelido is the parish priest in a mission station in Barangay Tugbong in this town. Ninety percent of Kananga’s populace is Catholic,” he quips. Masses at HFP from Mondays to Saturdays are at 5:30am, then there’s an additional mass on Wednesdays afternoon at 5:30 with Mother of Perpetual Help novena; and there’s a 5:30pm mass also on Fridays. Sunday masses are at 5am, 7am and at 6:30 in the evening. Confessions are at any time of the day! Tuesdays are reserved for the parish office staff and the priests’ day off.

“I noticed you have a school at the right wing of the parish compound”,I told the softspoken priest. “Yes! I converted the old and unused convent to a kiddie school. Thus, the birth of the Angelicum School on June 8, 2015! At present we have 50 students: Nursery-25 students, Kinder1-13 students, and Kinder11-12 students. I want you to interview the school administrator so she can provide you an in-depth information about Angelicum School,” Fr. Opiniano says matterof-factly. Is there any project you envision for your parish? “Months back, I was in Barcelona (Spain) and I saw a unique statue of the Holy Family. Hawak ni Jesus ang kanang kamay ng kanyang “ama”at siya ay nagmamano. Unbelievable but true! I was awed when I saw that! So my plan is to have one like that here Prosperity shot (from left) Mrs. Eufemia Hermoso, Teacher Sweetie, Teacher Angel, in my parish. Eugene when I learned he was scheduled to officiate the 6:30am mass at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Hermitage. Fr. Eugene is the chaplain of Hermitage. It takes 15 minutes to travel from HFP and Kananga’s town proper to reach the said place. The long and winding road were cemented, with tall coconut trees proudly standing firmly like electric lampposts and banana leaves swaying like pliant bamboos. Truth is, there were no signs at all that Kananga was hit by super typhoon Yolanda on Nov. 8, 2013. Rough roads met us when we entered Barangay Natubgan where the Hermitage is located. Children waved to Fr. Eugene when they saw his service vehicle maneuvered
Nativity, trimmed green grasses, tablets of the 10 Commandments of God, the tableau of the 14 Stations of the Cross are tourist attractions on their own. During the mass proper, the Hermit Nuns were in a separate room away from the eyes of the regular mass attendees. I was barefooted when I entered the sacred place. Its white flooring tiles were spick-and-span. There were no benches and pews, only cemented bleachers (risers). I was hoping against hope to meet and talk with the Mother Superior of the congregation, but she was humble enough to say it was not possible according to Fr. Eugene. Nonetheless, I wrote my petitions in a piece of paper and dropped them in a box. The congregation provides the visitors with pen and paper to scribble their petitions for the Hermit Nuns to include them in their daily prayers. There were donation boxes, likewise. White is the color scheme of Hermitage which to me, symbolizes Godliness, purity, innocence, completeness, and cleanliness of one’s soul. The stained glass attracted me. Our Lady of Peace Hermitage was founded on February 21, 1989 by Mother Mary Teresita of the Trinity (Sr. Teresita C. Bello, O.P.), with Sor Mary Magdalene of the Holy Cross (Fe dela Cruz) and Sr. Josie dela Cruz as cofoundresses. Most Rev. Pedro Rosales Dean, D.D., Archbishop Emeritus of Palo granted the nuns’ petitions and established residence in the said barangay in Kananga on Nov. 20, 1989. Truly outstanding! “Most of our students are Table setting- -an on-the-job training of hotel high school graduates or out-ofand tourism students school youths from the different barangays in Kananga, while others came from the neighboring barangays from Ormoc City,” Sheryll informed this writer. The school expects that successful graduates will repay the training center through an “adopt-atrainee” program or “pay-it-forward” scheme upon employment. Not bad after all! This is what I personally call, “payback time.” In a nutshell: “To my dear KEITECH students, the quality education you earn from KEITECH are just the beginning of your ultimate dream in life. Dreams never end. Big or small, set your inspiration in life. Continue dreaming. For it will inspire you for the betterment of life. Reach for your dream. A new horizon awaits you.” KEITECH is the answer to a better future of today’s youth. Soar high, KEITECH!

Piquadro, the premium Italian leather luggage, bag and accessories brand launched its latest collections by talented Italian designer, Giancarlo Petriglia through a swanky and very artsy cocktail party and collection exhibit. The amazing 200 square-metre space that is the AXON room in the newly christened Green Sun venue was beautifully transformed into an art gallery exhibiting just some of the fine works of Piquadro’s and Petriglia’s collaboration in silhouettes spanning the briefcase, the trolley, the hangbag, the messenger bag as well as small leather goods. Inspired by - and an extension of - Piquadro Italy’s Opera collection launch, the gallery was akin to a “Creative Lab” whereby unique art installations were designed and built based on each collection’s personality and look. These collaborations with Petriglia threw a new creative spin on the very technical Piquadro, thus taking functional style to the next level. Seen imbibing good bubbly and absorbing the sights and sounds were the country’s top editors and bloggers, celebrities, personalities, and select Piquadro VIP clientele. Welcoming the attendees that night were Gabriele Boschi (CEO of Brand Gateway, Inc., exclusive distributor of Piquadro in the Philippines), together with his wife, Julie as well as Marta Mischiatti (Piquadro’s Export Area Manager APAC). Jessica V. Maloles Stunning Beauty with a Golden Heart
By: Lorna S. Emata
You think that beauty and a kind heart can’t go together? Well, think again. More often than not, we get to meet people lacking in either one of these traits. However, I’m lucky enough to have met one person who possesses both attributes and is even so much more. Our dear readers, make way for our cover this month, Miss Jessica V. Maloles. At first sight, you won’t be able to help but admire her dusky looks and say, “This is one alluring beauty”. And it gets better once you get to know her. For me, I found myself warming up at once to her charming and engaging nature. Her candid responses and witty retorts during the interaction that we had left a great impression on me about how friendly and smart she is. Looking at her sweet face, you wouldn’t be able to tell right away how accomplished this beauteous woman is. But she is that, and as I said, much, much more. Ms. Jessie is a native of Davao

There came a point in her life when she became restless and felt she wanted to do and become more. She wanted to make a difference not only in her own comfortable sphere but outside of it as well where her life could possibly become more meaningful. This need was what got her started being involved in sociocivic projects. Soon, she was busy doing charity work and community services as well. She joined both The Rotary Club Manila South Chapter and the Inner
and she pursued her studies in Gen. Santos City. Love beckoned at a tender age. She became a proud mom while she was on her third year in college. Proves how attractive she really is :). She now has 5 beautiful children, 2 boys followed by 3 girls. Her eldest is 19 years old and the youngest is 7. Her husband, a native of Batangas, is very supportive of all her endeavors. Business-wise, this is one tough and hardworking lady. She runs a realty leasing company which is doing extremely well under her more than capable hands. With all these, one would assume that Ms. Jessie has got her life cut out for her. Absolutely not.

To date, she has been awarded “Most Outstanding President” of The Rotary Club and is presently the Charter President of the Inner Wheel Club. And to attest to her dedication and devotion to serve mankind, she has the “Gawad America-Dangal ng Bayan” award to her name. If you think that’s where Ms. Jessie’s accomplishments end, you got another think coming. She also entered the world of modelling, which was not at all surprising, given her good height and looks. invited to join a beauty pageant with a cause, the Mrs. Asia International stint. On her initial attempt, she emerged as the 1st runner-up in that illustrious beauty contest. With her eyecatching loveliness and shining personality, she easily gained recognition and popularity among her peers which she so richly deserved. She is presently active in this endeavor, being constantly invited to fashion events and shows, which of course, are all for good causes. She also recently hosted the La Masquerada Filipiniana Masquerade Ball which featured thecreations of fashion icon Boy Lizaso last August 9, held at the Manila Polo Club. The social event was a big hit, having been attended by the Who’s Who in the fashion and socio-civic industries. The question now is, how does this seemingly fragile and delicate lady play all of her roles in this life effectively—from that of being a devoted wife and mom, a cunning businesswoman, a sought-after model and beauty queen, to that of a generous socio-civic leader? Her answer? Time management and unending dedication. She says she has achieved the 6 areas of focus - what this
is, I leave it to you, dear readers, to discover for yourselves. On top of all her achievements and triumphs, she refuses to sit on her laurels. She still dreams of having her own charity foundation, while maintaining her socio-civic duties and continuing with community service to her fellowmen. Such a remarkable and truly inspiring woman. The first time I saw Ms. Jessie, my first impression of her was that she was genuinely beautiful. After our encounter, I came to know the real person behind that beauty, her humor in life, her depth, sincerity and sweetness, and most importantly, her passion and love for mankind. Jessica V. Maloles — a total beauty in body, mind and heart. It is truly a pleasure and honor to get to know you. Here it is, the longawaited sequel to the Samarrific Adventure. I just knew I would be writing this. Boy, do I have so much to share with all of you that I'm sure, after reading this, you all would be itching to go visit and see for yourselves what Samar is definitely all about these days. August is a special time for Samar. It is the month it celebrates Samar Day. But it's not just simply a celebration, mind you. It is a culmination of activities for a number of days with each of the municipalities participating, introducing and present-
Tandaya Festival 2015 in Samar San Francisco where we were billeted for those 3 glorious days we were there. We rested for a bit and soon, we were off to Maria's Restobar, where a sumptuous lunch

We arrived in Samar, Catbalogan in particular, in the early hours of Aug 9 to take part in its festivities. Though the entire celebration kicked off on Aug 3, we have yet to witness the highlights of the festival. We went directly to Hotel

with the Governor took place at the Capitol Bldg. It was a dinner well attended by guest celebrities Pateros Councilor Daisy Reyes, who travelled with us, much to our pleasure, and Troy Montero, the host of the pageant, and a few select media who were invited to the occasion. The dinner was exceptional with of course the famous and rich-tasting lechon being the main course of the meal. Then, it was time to watch the Mutya Han Samar -
the most prestigious beauty stint in Samar. It was a dazzling evening and the audience were very much entertained by the production numbers that were carefully prepared. Every one of the contestants representing each of the municipalities gave their best in showing off their talents, brains, and beauty. Eventually, the deserving beauty who was crowned as Mutya Han Samar was none other than Miss Talalora, who was really radiant and a standout that night. All in all, it was one enchanting
evening. Next day, Aug 10, we made it a point to go to Tina's Garden where the Maiz Con Hielo that they serve there is to die for. Its heavenly taste has haunted me ever
since I came to this homely snack place the first time we visited Samar in October 2014. We ate to our hearts' content and were truly satisfied and filled when we left the place. That evening, we were entertained by True Faith, where they held a free concert that night. We were taken back in time when the band was very popular as they played the songs that endeared them to us. We had a truly relaxing night as we listened to their music. Aug 11 - this was the final day of the Tandaya Festival. It started with a street dance contest among some of the participating municipalities as they interpreted their culture in the form of dance. We were captivated by the colorful and lively presentation of the performers. This was followed by the parade of Samar festivals, equally entertaining and vibrant to watch. Before this was a lunch with the Governor where representatives

from the towns' barangays partook of the meal the Governor had set for them. The day was capped by the Youth Night where celebrities like The Voice Philippines champion Jason Dy, ABS-CBN talent Sofia Andres and Ms Daisy Reyes serenaded the townspeople with songs. Thereafter, a street party ensued until the wee hours of the next morning. Everyone had the time of their lives as they dance the night away. It was time to leave for home the next day. But before that, we had the honor to say farewell to the tireless Governor and her staff who took good

We are looking forward to the Mangrove Safari, Lulugayan Falls in Calbiga and the Calbiga Caves. We hope we will again have the privilege of experiencing these natural wonders. ACTING IS AN AGELESS DREAM FOR NIDA MONDARES, OFW
“She who persists, suceeds.” That’s both a fact and an expectation for Nida Mondares, an OFW in Hong Kong who desires to build a career as an actress—in the Philippines, and, if possible, as well as in HK and wherever the good life takes her in her persevering ways. Nida never gives up on her self and on life. When she first worked in HK as a household help, she had extremely strict and stingy employers. She survived on rationed food which she secretly supplemented with biscuits and water she stashed in her bedroom which was a mere hole in the wall. She can cook, but she wasn’t allowed to touch the stove for her own use. She hanged on to the last day of the contract. She lost a lot of weight and came home emaciated. “My second employers were similarly disgusting. I also endured them and simply kept praying that my next one will be so much better,” she confides in Filipino. Again, she finished her contract. And the next one did turn out to be a greater blessing, which is why she has stayed with them to this day. They are French, expats like her. They allow her to cook her own food and to take her meals at a time she chooses. The wife recently brought her to Spain for a onemonth grand vacation. “We would have stayed in Spain for another month had the husband followed us, there,” she discloses. The trip to Spain was a dream come true. Nida has had other dreams that have begun to come true: to be an actress in front of the camera. “Some years ago, while I was back in Baguio and waiting for another job in HK, I was cast in a short role in the indie film Ay-Ayeng, with Heart Evangelista in the title role and with Ed Palmos as the film’s director. This was after I attended an acting workshop, also in Baguio,” she recalls. John Arcilla, who’s now being raved for his title-role performance in the critically-acclaimed indie film Heneral Luna, was also in that film, along with former Bb. Pilipinas Ma. Isabel Lopez and Jao Mapa. Nida has also begun to fulfill even in HK in little ways her dream of building a showbiz career. She joined a promotional beauty pageant, Ms. Richload Hongkong 2015, won third runner-up and several special awards, including Richload Ambassador HK 2015. She has also joined a singing group there known as HNM Blenders, which is managed by a Filipino promotion company and headed by entrepreneur by the name Russtar. Then, too, she auditioned to be in an employment agency commercial and easily landed a part. “I am very happy about my getting into that commercial because I was told that it will air for eight years in various TV stations in HK and will also be shown in moviehouses there. That means, a lot of people, including my fellow Filipinos will see me in HK both in the small screen and in the big screen,” she thrills.
By instinct, Nida has even learned to adapt the maxim “There are no small roles, only small actors.” She grabs every opportunity to face the camera and considers it an “acting role.” For instance, she was recently asked to be interviewed for a documentary on animal welfare which will be shown in Germany. She gamely accepted, quickly realizing that where she grew up in the province of Albay, her family was taking care of a variety of animals as pets and for food. “I was just walking in the park when I was approached by the crew. I considered the request to be interviewed a blessing because of all the people hanging out in the park that day, the crew deemed me personable and photogenic enough to be part of their documentary. I did my best to talk well in front of the camera. I did it as if I was acting out a role, a character,” she confides. She seems to have become a recognized OFW personality in HK. She has been getting invitation to various glamorous events. Just this September, she was invited to be a judge in the beauty and personality pageant Miss Noble Life International held in South Horn Auditorium in Central HK. Nida, who is nearing 50 despite her youthful looks, dreams of being able to work with Robin Padilla one day. “We both spent many years in Baguio, though I never had the chance to meet him there. I heard he is a very charming gentleman in person, and there’s no doubt that he is a very good actor, so it will be a privilege and challenge to have scenes with him on camera...,” she muses. Doesn’t she want to be Robin Padilla’s leading lady? “Yes, I want to be. I dream of it. And I think, dreaming and acting are both ageless. They will all be fulfilled in God’s time.” Need one say more?

Breakthrough phytomedicine clinically proven to provide sustained pain-relief from Osteoarthritis
Dr. Eduardo Rommel Poblete, Assistant Director and Fellowship Training Officer, Geriatric Center, St. Luke’s Medical CenterQuezon City
A breakthrough phytomedicine for Osteoarthritis (OA) further proved its efficacy with the first local clinical study that shows sustained pain-relief to individuals suffering from the joint disease that affects 11 million Filipinos.* Arthrite, the first traditional herbal medicine approved by the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for joint pain, consists of 14 herbal components that work synergistically to reduce pain caused by osteoarthritis. Apart from pain relief, Arthrite contains several active herbal ingredients which are responsible for reducing joint inflammation, pain management and improving joint mobility. “Osteoarthritis has been affecting millions of lives, limiting one’s ability to perform daily tasks, reducing the quality of life and even contributing to the development of depression among elderly patients. But we need not suffer all throughout our lives because there is an effective and safe medication that can provide relief from joint pain, Arthrite is the answer to osteoarthritis!” said Dr. Eduardo Rommel Poblete, Assistant Director and Fellowship Training Officer, Geriatric Center, St. Luke’s Medical Center-Quezon City. To further prove the efficacy and safety of Arthrite in providing
symptomatic relief to patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis, a local clinical study was conducted by Dr. Poblete. The clinical trial tested 60 patients, with ages ranging from 45 years old and up, who were clinically diagnosed with mild-moderate osteoarthritis. For the duration of 8 weeks, patients were prescribed to take 2 Arthrite capsules after breakfast and 2 capsules after dinner, for a total of 120 capsules for a period of 2 months. Patients were also prescribed to take 1 tablet in the morning of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) called Meloxicam as a rescue medication.
Results of a clinical study shows that Arthrite provides sustained pain relief to patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis.
Getting proper relief from osteoarthritis is often a complicated issue because people in their golden years often also have to deal with other health complications.
As a result, the physician’s global evaluation showed that 83% of the patients experienced moderately effective pain relief and 17% had very effective pain relief on first month of observation. During the second month of physician’s global evaluation, 45% experienced moderate effectiveness;
vanity ..................... 34
30% had very effective pain relief; and 25% were symptom-free. Patient’s global assessment in the first month shows majority (75%) had experienced moderate effectiveness, followed by very high effectiveness (23%) and symptom-free (3.2%). No side effects were reported during the clinical trials and the physicians global evaluation revealed a positive result from moderately effective to symptoms free after 2 months of treatment. Meanwhile, Patient’s global assessment shows beneficial effect specifically to pain. Majority of the patients were symptom-free after 2 months of treatment. Due to the effectiveness of Arthrite, it has been recommended to be part of the treatment regimen of patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. What’s your message to San Jose De Trozo parishioners? “Let God surprise us as we walk together.” Barely 3 months in our parish, he has instituted the following: (1) Orderly distribution of the Holy Communion done by rows. (2) Donation envelopes will be on special occasions only. (3) Thirty minutes before scheduled Sunday masses, there will be praying of the rosary, and the chaplet of the Divine Mercy. (4) Confession is visible and open before mass schedules. To ease the heat inside the church, Fr. Tony and Fr. Lemuel provided additional 10 industrial fans to existing small ceiling electric fans. Thank you!

elementary days at Saint Benedict Academy in Guinobatan, Albay; secondary grades at Saint Gregory the Great Minor Seminary in Tabaco (Albay). My college days were at Lorenzo Mission institute in Guadalupe, Makati,” he reminisced the past with a smile in his eyes. “My Theology class was at San Carlos Seminary in Guadalupe, and I majored in Philosophy,” he added. “At what age did you discover that you wanted to be a priest”, I asked. “I was 9 years old and Grade 3 at that time. I already knew my vocation was priesthood. My friends and friends of my friends who were older than me were destined in the calling to serve God as priests, so I was in the company of future God’s ministers” the amiable priest stated matter-of-factly. Fr. Tony was ordained priest on November 9, 2006, and on July 5, 2009, he was assigned parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Parish located in Damar Village, Sgt. Rivera Street, in Quezon City. On August 30, 2015 he was appointed as the new parish priest of our parish, San Jose De Trozo (SJDT) in Masangkay Street, City of Manila. His Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, the Archbishop of Manila formally installed him to office. His post as parish priest of SJDT is his first-ever assignment under the Archbishop of Manila. Rev. Fr. Lemuel Tibay, is SJDT parochial vicar. If you did not become a priest, what would you be today? “I never thought of that! Let me think. I think I would be a lawyer, or a songwriter, or probably a college professor.”
The altar boys led the procession march on the red carpet nave with their lit candles, Holy Cross, and thurible with incense, followed by the Eucharistic ministers, lectors, guests and priests in white vestments from the LRMS congregation, Fr. Lemuel and Fr. Tony. At the end of the line was Cardinal Tagle in his white and green cassocks and over his red skullcap was his miter, and he walked with the “pastoral staff” in his left hand as he smiled and blessed the people. My sisters, nieces and I had the wonderful feeling of joy and happiness that Sunday afternoon. For the 3rd time, we met Cardinal Tagle up close in our parish again. His first visit was in 2012 and the second time was in 2013. Both visits were in line with SJDT 79th and 80th founding anniversaries. Father Tony officiated the 5pm mass while the homily was delivered in Filipino parlance by the good Pontiff. In a nutshell he said, “Obey the law of God. Pag pinapakita ang Eskinol commercial sa TV ang tao ay bumibili, pag may shampoo commercial bumibili rin. Sinusunod natin ang sinasabi sa TV commercials. Dapat sumusunod din tayo sa batas ng Panginoon.” In between his homily, he drew jokes like a professional comedian. “May natanggap akong text at ang sabi ako daw ay hindi mukhang Obispo. Eh, sa totoo lang naman, hindi po talaga ako mukhang Obispo. Ako po ay mukhang artista. Naiingit ang mga kaparian sa akin.” Laughter ensued. “Kayong mga kabataan maglingkod kayo sa simbahan at sa Panginoon. Ang mga lalaki. Magpari kayo. Punta kayo sa opisina ng Lorenzo Ruiz Mission Society. May nakita akong mga madre, kaya kayong mga babae, magmadre kayo. Lapitan niyo ang mga madre,” he said seriously. He did a couple more jokes and the good Cardinal received a thunderous applause. In his closing spiel, Cardinal Tagle quipped: “Mga parishioner ng San Jose De Trozo, hinahabilin ko po sa inyo si Fr. Tony. Alagaan po niyo siya at mahalin. Fr. Tony, hinahabilin ko rin sa iyong mga kamay ang mga San Jose De Trozo parishioner mo. Alagaan at mahalin mo rin sila. Pagsilbihan mo sila ayon sa iyong sinumpaang tungkulin bilang kura-paroko nila,” his piece-de-resistance. Before the final blessing, a group of teenyboppers parish ministry youth animators did a remarkable dance interpretation of the ditty aptly dubbed, “We Give You Thanks!” All of us were awed with so much happiness in our hearts. I had that palpable feeling of being at cloud 9. Cardinal Tagle, thank you for the visit! Fr. Tony, Mabuhay ka!

DESIGNER’S SPOTLIGHT: MANELLE CHAMIAN
Splendid and Breathtaking collections inspired by beautiful skyscrapers in Europe acquiring my couture design. Who is your design inspiration? I am inspired by Christian Dior, Valentino and Madeleine Vionnet... Each designer has his own aesthetic, character and texture, but all three of them are all leaning towards ubiquity in their designs... Divine and breathtaking creations. What advice did you give yourself when you were starting out? I always spoke to myself and would say, “Always focus on what you want and don’t be affected by whoever antagonizes you, rather, take it as a challenge and motivation to move further ... God will always be the best fashion designer in the world. Whenever you feel empty, call Him and He will help you create beautiful couture dresses... Lastly, never stop learning and mastering your craft. After all, people may forget you but the tenacity of your work will become the retrospection and standard of the future designers.” What do you want women to feel when they wear your clothes? Confident. She would feel that she is one of the sexiest women alive...a superstar in her own way. Sophisticated is the only word that will best describe her. Is there anything you want to share to all our readers? Craftsmanship is priceless... Never compromise quality over quantity... Beautiful clothes will never be cheap but you will never forget that feeling of confidence while wearing it... There is no “price tag” for confidence. An LBD ( little black dress) is a must in your wardrobe, you can never go wrong with it...Red lipstick can brighten up your gloomy day, try it, and it can do wonders. There you have it. One word to describe her collections is “PERFECTION”. To get to know more about Manelle Chamian, checkout her social media accounts: Atelier: Lazatin Boulevard,Villa Victoria, Dolores, City of San Fernando (Pampanga), 2000 Philippines. Mobile Number: +63915.512.4106. Email: manellechamian@yahoo.com.ph. Instagram: Manelle Chamian. Hashtag: manellechamiancouture
Manelle has dressed some of the biggest stars in the country. The FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) trained designer is as full of clench as her personal style is very feminine, figure-flattering with a little touch of fusion. Since she was in high school, she had known that designing was her passion. Her gowns are timeless and she never leaves her client feeling less than breathtaking and confident. She would feel that she is one of the sexiest women alive, a superstar in her own way. In this Designer Spotlight, I had the chance to chitchat with Manelle about her inspirations and how she started her fashion career and found her inspiration from simple ornate objects to the skyscrapers in Europe. What inspired Manelle? I am inspired with everything I see... I see art even in the smallest details. I can get inspiration from simple ornate objects to the tallest architecture in Europe. Wherever I go to different parts of the world, I get design inspirations. Where are you from?
I am based in Pampanga from the City of San Fernando. When did you realize you wanted to be a designer? I was just in high school then, I knew that what I wanted was to become a Fashion Designer. I usually sketched prom dresses for my classmates and helped them materialize their dream gowns. I even made a deal with my mom that after acquiring a degree in college (where she insisted I should take a four-year course... I graduated as BS Nursing) I will pursue my dream of becoming a designer and so...I made it possible. Describe your personal style. My personal style is feminine, figure-flattering with a little touch of fusion... I
would always want my creations to be timeless. A little piece of classic that every client would be proud of many years after

travel I’m a travel buff if I may say. But I chickened out at the idea of taking a dip in the cold waters that day when I visited the Shannet Mountain Resort in a farflung place in Barangay Lonoy in Kananga, Leyte due to my earnest desire to photograph the people there, the swimmers, most of all. Likewise, I was terribly hooked on taking pictures of the sylvan rocks, the mountainous area and the cottages made of nipa huts. The artist in my persona prevailed. Shannet Mountain Resort is more than a hectare, with spring waters to boot, and is surrounded by tall coconut and beatiles trees, ferns, espada plants, and fruitbearing trees such as caimito, banana and santol.

Entrance fee at the resort for both children and adult is only P50.00. Cottage rental is P500. Pool time is from 9am-6pm, beyond 6pm the management charges P200.00 per hour. Since there’s no store or canteen in the premises yet, swimmers are allowed to bring their own baon (food).
The resort has 10 cottages made of nipa huts. Two resthouses with private comfort rooms are available with bed foam and can be rented at Php1,800 for 24 hours. Two mini-sized swimming pools and one circular wading pool for children are its attractions. Three lifeguards are on alternate shifts to safeguard the security of the resort’s guests. Good idea! For islanders short on cash, one can rent a wooden table with bench at the price of P150 only. There’s a common shower area, and separate comfort rooms for male and female guests. The 8-month old Shannet Mountain Resort is owned by Anita Orbe and was named after her mother, Shannet; with Rodelyn Oliveros as the resort caretaker. Aling Mely (Melita Dacal), the mother of Rodelyn entertained us. So if you’re a nature lover, Shannet Mountain Resort is the place for you to explore and appreciate the wondrous beauty of Mother Nature. I dare you!

The Effects of Aging on the Face
As we age, the years will noticeably, inevitably show on our faces. Skin sags, cheeks sink, and chin lines widen. Laxity commonly first occurs on the forehead, which leads to eyebrow descent, excess skin or hooding on the eyelids, and a less open-eyed appearance. Meanwhile, cheek and neck tissue laxity can lead to flattening of the mid-cheek, nasolabial folds, “marionette” lines surrounding the chin or downturned mouth, the loss of jawline angularity or jowls, and sagging under the chin. Fortunately, there is an effective, non-invasive, and sound solution for these effects. Merz Aesthetics’ press conference on Natural Youthful Skin Through The Beauty of Sound Ultherapy on July 17 at Le Jardin, with medical practitioners Hsien-Li Peter Peng, M.D., Venzo Viceral, M.D., Z Teo, M.D., and Ronaldo G. Elepano III, M.D. as speakers, shares information on the procedure.
See the Beauty Of Sound ULTHERAPHY is a non-surgical skin lifting procedure that uses tried and true ultrasound energy. It’s the ONLY non-invasive, US FDA cleared procedure that’s to LIFT the skin on the neck, brow and under the chin! Cosmetic procedures typically involve improving superficial layers of the skin of imperfections like fine lines,
wrinkles, pigment changes. On the other hand, Ultherapy addresses deeper skin layer where weak collagen is reorganized and strengthened by the growth of new collagen leading to cosmetic enhancement that lends support to the skin. ULTHERAPHY uses micro-focused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V) to show the different tissue layers being targeted and structures, such as bone, to avoid. And it treats at pre-determined depths while bypassing the surface of the skin. Focused ultrasound energy is delivered non-invasively to heat deep tissue without affecting the surface of the skin. The heat created triggers the body’s natural response mechanism, which is to rejuvenate weakened collagen and supplement it with fresh, new collagen. Results build gradually over 2-3months and can continue to improve up to 6 months post procedure. Ultheraphy is brought to you by Mervs’ Aesthetics, a division of Merz, the innovative leader in aesthetics. Let us all say goodbye to the effects of aging face, and see the beauty of sound.

Scars may be a reminder of pain and personal tragedy. However, scars are also a sign of healing wounds. They are a testament to an individual’s courage and resilience. Scars mean closure on whatever pain and tragedy has happened, and it is something that can be visually improved as part of the healing process. Scarvivor, is an advocacy from the country’s leading scar
management brand Contractubex® (Extractum Cepae + Heparin + Allantoin), in support of the burn centers of the Philippines, and the Philippine Association of Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeons (PAPRAS) mission. As part of the advocacy, Contractubex proudly shares inspirational and life-changing stories from 6 courageous SCARvivors. ”There were issues with those big scars, particularly after my first modified radical mastectomy when I was just 28. Then, I realized It’s about getting well. What you went through. And getting over that,” says Nikoy de Guzman, who has undergone a double mastectomy. “Hindi ka lang scarred physically. Pati yung self-esteem mo natamaan. Nung time na yun, I didn’t want people looking
at my scars. Ngayon, I know there’s more about me than my scars,” shares Sherilyn Bruan, a survivor of the Ozone Disco fire. “My scars are very big and my left leg was deformed. It was a very difficult experience, but with the help of many loving people especially my Mom and Dad, I am now on my road to complete recovery,” says Giboy Billena, a 13-yearold bone cancer survivor. “Dahil sa scars, dati binubully ako. Sinusulatan yung libro ko ng sunog. Ganun. Pero hindi ko hinayaang masira ang buhay ko,” says Rubylyn Cua Rodel, who got burned in an accident. “My experience has been a painful struggle. But I didn’t let it hinder me from doing the things I wanted to do. I want others to know that you can be so much more than your scars. Just trust yourself and your will to fight,” shares Dwight Bayona, a racer who lost his leg in an accident.
“Ang mahalaga, muli akong makabalik sa aking tungkulin. Dala ng paninilbihan ang sugat na ito, nagbibigay sa akin ng lakas ng loob,” according to Richard Tagapan, a PNP SAF officer injured in the line of duty. T h e Scarvivors event press launch on August 27, 2015, 10 am at Amici Restaurant, features talks from Dr Jose Joven Cruz, President of PAPRAS; Dr. Dorothy Dy Ching Bing, Burn Rehabilitation Consultant on burn centers in the Philippines; and Nikoy De Guzman, one of the SCARvivors, for the closing remarks. The SCARvivor exhibit at Exhibit Space 3, UGF Building A, SM Megamall runs from August 27, 2015 to September 2, 2015. We encourage you to be part of the advocacy by visiting the exhibit and extending your support to other SCARvivors out there. You can also support the SCARvivor advocacy by purchasing Contractubex®. For every Contractubex® purchased, patients from selected burn centers will be given their own SCARvivor Kit. This is in line with the commitment of Contractubex® to helping patients manage scars, so that someday, being SCARvivors themselves, only their stories of hope and courage remain.

SWEET DREAMS WITH ELICA When a child can’t sleep at night, it’s usually because of the monsters under the bed. And that keeps mommies awake too. That’s why they do everything in their power to drive away the scares so that kids can have a good night’s rest. But there’s one monster that is difficult to put to sleep: the monster that attacks the skin, eczema. Eczema is characterized by red, dry, itchy rashes on the skin. It is more common in children than in adults. It can also have a huge negative impact on a kid’s life, like sleep deprivation. Such is the case for celebrity mom Cheska Garcia-Kramer and her daughter Scarlett. According to Cheska, Scarlett used to cry at night because of her itchy rashes. But after their doctor recommended mometasone furoate or Elica, a topical steroid from Bayer Philippines, both mom and child saw results within 24 hours. The peaceful rests returned and since then, both mother and daughter have had sweet dreams. Cheska shared her daughter’s itch story in the “Sweet Dreams with Mometasone furoate (Elica)” launch on August 19, 2015 at Ascott, Bonifacio Global City, where both she and Scarlett were revealed as the newest celebrity endorsers for Elica. “Scar couldn’t sleep talaga when she gets eczema flare-ups kasi

Greg Banzon, General Manager of Century Pacific Food Corporation. “We hope we can inspire more people out there, too, to start living a healthy lifestyle as we gladly feature the return of our ever fit endorser Derek,” he added. Standing at five feet, ten and a half inches and weighing 175 pounds, Derek is ripped. Tagged one of the hottest celebrities in the local entertainment industry, the actor maintains perfectly defined abs, strong, sculpted shoulders, and toned arms and legs. However, one might be surprised to know that Derek does not only engage in extreme workout to achieve this chiselled state. “I learned that achieving a 100% fit body is 30% exercise and 70% diet,” Derek shared. “That’s why it is important for me to find a source of protein that has less fat, less salt, and made from 100% pure tuna,” he added. Century Tuna Lite has 50% less fat and 50% less salt versus other regular flakes in oil. Aside from protein, tuna is an excellent source of important nutrients such as the
minerals selenium, magnesium, and potassium; not to mention vitamin B complex and omega-3 essential fatty acids. Omega 3 DHA is not only good for the heart; it also helps burn body fat, shrink abdominal fat cells and stop certain genes that trigger inflammation on belly fat. Above all, Century Tuna Lite is made from 100% pure tuna, no extenders, making it a perfectly delicious and healthy meal. While one can conveniently enjoy it straight from the can, Century Tuna chefs also share a line of deliciously healthy recipes that are low-calorie yet rich in nutrients. Resisting unhealthy food may be difficult, but Derek reminds everyone that “Every goal requires 100% dedication, so don’t give up! and needs only to be applied once daily, unlike most topical steroids that are applied twice a day. Moreover, clinical studies have demonstrated Elica’s efficacy and safety profile. Elica has also been recommended and prescribed by doctors for many years. “Eczema should be treated i m m e d i a t e l y, because it can affect a child’s selfesteem, social activities and of course, sleep,” Dr. Yamat further explained. W h e n Eczema strikes, use the effective treatment of Elica and see results in 24 hours, so that both kids and moms can sleep tight. “Our pediatrician recommended Elica and it really helped relieve Scarlett of the itch, redness and swelling because of her eczema,” Cheska said. Elica comes in cream and ointment formats, available over-the-counter without doctor’s presciption. For more information on Elica, go to www.treateczema.ph or visit www.facebook.com/ElicaPH.
Eczema flare-ups can be triggered by several factors, including dust mites, family pets, heat or harsh soaps. “These triggers should be controlled in order to avoid the symptoms of eczema,” Dr. Lyra Yamat iterated. Flare-ups may require more than just moisturizers and in such instances, a fast and powerful treatment is needed. Elica, a topical steroid, is considered to be the first line of defense for eczema. It can help relieve eczema symptoms with visible results in 24 hours,

The Return of an Old Favorite
Today’s generation of pageant fans and enthusiasts in the country no longer have any vivid recollection of the beauty contest that completed the trifecta of national competitions during the 60s and 70s. After all, Binibining Pilipinas and Mutya ng Pilipinas are the only ones that stood the test of time and continued to exist up until now. So it really bears watching that an old institution has been revived after thirty-nine (39) long years and ready to make its mark anew. Miss Republic of the Philippines has been given a muchanticipated rebirth with an added twist. It is now a scholarship pageant that will have education and tourism as main thrusts.
What’s more, members of different fashion association in the country -mostly coming from FDAP (Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines), FDCP and independent designers from Ilocos and Cebu in cooperation with the talented young minds behind Vatican Fashion Museum, will be on hand to dress up the candidates in the National Terno Competition that promises to evolve the pageant to new creative heights of cultural appreciation. This is one important segment that should not be missed. Twenty (20) homegrown delegates and an equal number of representatives from Filipino Communities abroad have already been selected to vie for two (2) crowns - Miss Republic of the Philippines and Miss Republic of the Philippines International. And this early, much interest has already been generated with local government offices in support of the same. Some key individuals from the previous Miss RP in the mid-70s have also agreed to be back on board, apart from having Robert Rivera of RPN-9 (now CNN Philippines) as Line Producer.
Truth be told, the excitement with the return of an old favorite is fast building up. And Miss Republic of the Philippines promises to meet the expectations of those people who still have memories of pageant years gone by and the new breed of beauty contest aficionados who want to see nothing but the best from a national competition. Full steam ahead for Miss Republic of the Philippines! Miss Republic of the Philippines is proudly partnered with Fisher Mall (Official Mall), Mila Imson & Kitsilver Jewelers (Official Crown Maker), BNU (Official Legal Partner), Vibe (Official Gym & Wellness Clinic), Informatics , Tinapayan and Sun Itch.
