A look behind the runway: Vancouver Kids Fashion Week with Haley Sengsavanh VKFW

It’s a crisp spring morning and the David Lam Hall is quiet. Rows and rows of empty clothing racks are housed backstage, ready to be adorned with colourful garments. The audience area is unfilled, waiting for stylish show goers to take their seats and enjoy showcase after showcase of brilliant chil drenswear. But that quiet doesn’t last for long, as Vancouver Kids Fashion Week (VKFW) volunteers and staff begin to ar rive with clear mindsets, months of preparation, a cup of coffee or two and an eagerness to get the day started. The venue is abuzz with zest and vi brancy even before the show begins, a fact that becomes even more ap parent when the lovely kids models arrive. Their energy is electric and infectious. Many come through the doors skip ping, looking forward to being pampered by hair and makeup. You can hear delighted giggling as their hair is curled up, and see them grinning from ear to ear when the makeup artist hands them a mirror to check out their finished look.

ing their sharp outfit be fore they hit the runway. Putting on a fashion show takes a lot of hard work, time and collaborative spirit. But the moment the lights come on, the music booms and the first young model struts down the runway with stars in their eyes, it becomes apparent to everyone that it was well worth it.

For our first-time models, their confidence notice ably blooms during rehearsal. Volunteers encourage and guide them down the runway, and they become more comfortable in front of the clicking cameras tak ing

Interview with Model Nicole Kot

"My name is Nicole Kot, and I am 14 years old. I am a model, actress and young positive health influencer from Vancouver. I enjoy being a brand ambassador by helping various name brands from all over the world. I am also a content creator, @kotnicole on Instagram and Tik Tok. I am a proud Ambassador of Vancouver Kids Fashion Week. I love all the fun little projects we do together because I get to be a role model for the young er models. The new YouTube video was just re leased on the YAP TV channel @young_actors_proj ect. In our opinion, my friend and I, Desi G, @desig. music, played some annoying little boys, and it is a hilarious video. Check it out! Recently, I partnered up with @blanx.me and was blessed to be able to design my sneakers! I am an avid volleyball play er and a member of the BC Army Cadets, which I take very seriously as it's my way to give back to our veterans. For fun, I love cooking healthy snacks and longboarding with my friends."

When did you first start modeling?

What advice would you give to someone who wants to be a runway model?

VKFW 31

I want to do more acting projects and am very interested in fashion design. I hope to do more reporting projects with @teenswannaknow from LA in the next few years, which may help me towards the five-year plan. They feature talented teenagers and valuable information about teens' lives on their so cial media channels. I enjoy meeting new people and interviewing them. I value any opportunity to vol unteer in my community or participate in chari table events and fundraising projects, so please send any projects for me to join in. Hopefully, I can open my own business in the industry one day.

My mom’s friend did runway modelling at Vancouver Fashion Week, and she suggested I try the Kids’ section in 2017. She did a private lesson on the catwalk for me, and I was selected for the next VKFW casting. I fell in love with the opportunity to be able to promote so many positive causes. My first appearance at VKFW was for Lamovida at the FW2018 season, and I was chosen to open the show. In the following season, I was walking for Korean designer @kipop021 and was chosen as an ambassa dor for local designer @littleprincessgown and was modelling for them for every season until now. I was a front model in each show to open the very flattering showcase.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

The last season I also walked for Mexican designer, Nolo. In the Summer of 2018, I participated in the Chi nese modelling competition in Guangzhou,China the “Show Idol Model Contest,” with over 600 contests worldwide. I won a trophy, “Influential Child Model,” a memorable international modelling experience for me!

In 5 years, I will still be working hard at everything I do and work towards. I will be busy with some of the most critical school years of my life and my direction on where I can add the most value in being a positive motivator within this fashion industry. I have some other plans and things I am passionate about, one of the most important being family.

Follow your passions and desires – go for it! Be yourself! Strive to be your best! Know that positive and healthy brand modelling can in fluence society’s perceptions and views!
