How to build a sustainable wardrobe for kids
Suncun 2024 VANCOUVER KIDS FASHION WEEK 5
Since my childhood, I have always been fascinated by the beauty and diversity of flowers. Their unique essence and vibrant colors inspire me to create designs that reflect the beauty and harmony of nature. Being a floral designer allows me to combine my love for plants and my ability to create floral compositions that surprise and excite those who admire them.

But who is the face behind the bully blocker? Donna Brittingham is the businesswoman who took the high road with this being her second-time entrepreneur and got the Runway. Donna was born in Texas but as the child of an Airforce officer, she had the chance to travel the world from a young age, making her a curious child and outdoor enthusiast. She suddenly became aware of the needs of the market around her and asked herself how she could look fabulous, protect herself and preserve the planet.
This is when Bully Blocker was born and brought to us this amazing line that does not overlook its environmental impact, they go by the golden rules: reduce, refill, reuse, recycle, respect. From ethically sourced ingredients to minimal packaging, they strategically create products that are multipurpose/multitasking and minimize product volume and unnecessary waste. We had the chance to interview Donna herself and she got to tell us some of her best experiences, challenges and tips
How did Bully Blocker make it “from the ranch to the Runway”?
A couple years back Vancouver Fashion Week was looking for a makeup partner and Bully Blocker caught their eye with its sustainability vision, making Vancouver Fashion Week able to create cleaner and faster runways “As you may know show timing is critical, a last minute curveball had the makeup artists transforming the already done looks to a completely different theme all with the help of the Bully Blocker makeup sticks” Donna shared with us Shortly after their first fashion show together VFW adopted Bully Blocker as their only and official makeup supplier and she is here for it! “It’s the energy for me! But is this makeup safe for your kids? Given the fact that VFW and GFC showcase a younger base of models, we wanted to make sure the products used were as safe for them as for adults with mature skin. The brand pro motes transparency since everyone is just a click away from getting to know all the ingredients used in their products.

We all know that when it comes to buying clothing for kids, nothing lasts for very long These littles seem to grow bigger and bigger each day, and before we know it, there’s another jumper in the donation bin This can be hard on our wallets and the environment So, how do we create a wardrobe that is fashionable, but also won’t end up being thrown out in a couple of months? We can break it down into three sections, Versatile Use, Grow with Your Kids, and Sustainable Fabrics.
HOW TO BUILD A SUSTAINABLE WAREDROBE FOR KIDS
By Jessica Pang
Have you ever bought a stunning dress for a spring backyard party, just for it to end up collecting dust in the back of the closet? This seems to be an all too familiar issue for most parents. When clothes are too fancy for everyday wear, but somehow seem to have shrunk three sizes the next time an appropriate occasion comes up again
To reduce the chances of only wearing a piece of clothing once, parents can opt for versatile pieces that are fancy enough for an afternoon tea, but simple enough for the playground For girls, having a couple of simple dresses is an absolute must. They can be worn with a zip-up hoodie for a fun day outdoors, or elevated with a nice jacket and accessories for fancy dinners. For boys, having a couple of simple polos or button-ups will ensure they are ready for any special occasion, while also being simple enough to be worn to school The polos can be worn with various styles of pants depending on the occasion, and the button-ups can be worn over a t-shirt for a more casual look.
Opt for versatile pieces that are fancy enough for an afternoon tea, but simple enough for the playground.

Grow with Your Kids
One of the main issues with dressing kids is the way they grow so fast. Sometimes it even feels as if there is something wrong with the washer A new trend is pieces that can be resized with adjustable waistbands or even specially engineered fabrics that stretch as kids grow Some of these new technologies allow clothing to grow by over seven sizes! By incorporating these pieces, it will reduce the amount of clothes entering landfills, as kids outgrow them Clothing will last longer in kid’s closets, and the costs saved can go to more fun activities with your kids.
This is the most intuitive way to dress sustainably, but by buying sustainable fabrics, it ensures that when clothes do leave our closets, they are biodegradable Some of the most popular include recycled polyester, organic cotton, Tencel, and hemp These are not only gentle on the environment but can be more comfortable Natural fabrics are better at keeping you cool by being breathable and quick to absorb moisture They are also softer with hypoallergenic properties, which can be more comfortable for kids with sensitive skin. While natural fabrics may be a bit more expensive, their comfort and durability may convince you to make the investment
As the world becomes more sustainable, it is essential to become more aware of how we can do our part. Dressing in more sustainable fabrics, or finding different ways to style the same pieces can be the first step in creating a smart wardrobe We hope this article has inspired you on your next shopping trip. Atelier Henriette
In 2017, a brand by Japanese designer Anri Komai started by making clothes for his own children. This season, I expressed nature motifs such as flowers in a mid-colour dress inspired by nature with embroidery and patchwork that designers are good at. The warmth of nostalgic handicrafts and the fresh expression with plenty of drapes match beautifully. You can also feel the commitment to children’s clothes, such as using 100% cotton for the material used.
20 VANCOUVER KIDS FASHION WEEK 2024
Fuhan
Fuhan, a kimono brand for children, that started with the desire to wear a kimono more fun and casually. You can easily handle a kimono, wearing it at home and washing it right away after use. In the collection, while feeling the traditional unique beauty from Japan, he brought to the world the possibility of kimonos as everyday fashionable clothes.
2024 VANCOUVER KIDS FASHION WEEK 21
A high-sense collection that upgrades children’s daily wear, like a brand name that means “daily life” in Korean. We aim to make sustainable clothes using natural materials such as cotton and linen. Everything is handmade, so the decoration on the chest is carefully expressed in every detail. The comfortable texture and wide range of fashion are designed with inspiration from Japanese culture.
22 VANCOUVER KIDS FASHION WEEK 2024
Haru
Lily Annie
Lily Annie brilliantly creates the world view of the story, and is packed with plenty of classic and fantasy elements from the profound feeling of the fabric to the use of accessories. For each look, the design and styling that makes you feel the story are eye-catching. Japanese designer Kanako Inoue makes clothes with the wish to keep the memories of his childhood, which will be the most treasure for his family, with high-quality clothes.
2024 VANCOUVER KIDS FASHION WEEK 23
Lino-Pepe
Lino-Pepe has the brand name “Shining Baby” in Hawaiian. A Japanese designer, who is also a mother, is handmade one by one with the brand goal of delivering smiles to mothers and children. In the collection now, models show off a dramatic collection as if they came out of a picture book story. The fine frill sleeves finished by hand, which can be said to be synonymous with the brand, and the use of tulle that changes the expression every time you move are beautiful.
24 VANCOUVER KIDS FASHION WEEK 2024
Little Princess Gown
Little Princess Gown, a dress brand from Canada that fulfils the dream of a girl who dreams of a princess. “ According to the concept of “Treating all little girls like royalty”, we aim to make a dress that sticks to quality. Using gorgeous materials indispensable for dresses, such as glittery glitter, fluffy tulle, and swaying feathers, we created a world view of a princess that exalts the heart.
2024 VANCOUVER KIDS FASHION WEEK 25
MAMACAMO
Mamacamo, a daily wear brand from France, was born so that children who grow up can wear clothes comfortably for as long as possible. By adopting elastic materials such as OEKO-Tex® Standard organic cotton and recycled cotton, and adjusting the length of the sleeves, waist and pants of the top, you can change the size of up to 4 sizes compared to general clothes. Evolutionary clothing that is possible. While taking care of the environment, we are also focussing on reducing the expenditure of the parent generation.
26 VANCOUVER KIDS FASHION WEEK 2024
Moda by Cheerful Mama
A collection that incorporates Japanese elements on the themes of fairy tales, oiran, samurai, etc. You can combine dresses and kimonos, and the back is decorative. The Japanese and Western mix completed with its own interpretation is unique. The costume brand by Japanese designer IKUMI, who started his career as a designer 14 years ago, has fine details like craftsmanship and fresh to match.

Seeds And Bloom
Announces Children’s Clothes For “special Days”. A brand launched in 2021 by a Japanese woman who worked as an MD at a select shop after taking her own maternity leave. This season’s flower motif dress contains the thought that the unique and unique talents of children bloom while cherishing the children as they are, which is also a brand philosophy. We make clothes that stick to high-quality fabrics made in Japan such as lace, embroidery, and jacquard, and environmentally friendly materials.
28 VANCOUVER KIDS FASHION WEEK 2024
Ujmatsu
A collection by an up-andcoming designer duo that opened a new door to the world of children’s clothing. The loose silhouette, beautifully swaying lines, and the look that makes you feel playfulness and fashion while being wearable are eye-catching. It is a next-generation collection that beautifully expresses passion for design and rich creativity, such as oversized dresses that also make you feel artistic elements.
2024 VANCOUVER KIDS FASHION WEEK 29
Wood Wood Wood
A children’s clothing brand by a Japanese handmade artist. The soft dress made by hand made one by one using double gauze that complements the childlikeness is impressive. We dare to eliminate high-quality materials, flashy decorations, and modern functions, and express the true “love” that parents have for their children with a gentle material called gauze. The way the dress with a mediaeval world-like appearance sways softly every time it moves is very dramatic.

Where you sit is absolutely the key. Many people make the mistake of trying to get a bulkhead seat and bassinet by checking in earlier and putting their request in upon arrival at the airport But in fact, as early as when you book your ticket, you can call the airline first and reserve the bulkhead seat with a baby bassinet
However, each airline's guidelines are different. Some airlines only provide bassinets for babies under six months old Some airlines can accept infants older than six months if the height and weight do not exceed the airline's standard limit For details, you can ask the airline staff first when you call.
We flew with Air Canada, Thai Airways and Cathay Pacific for this trip Except for Thai Airways, we were able to get first row economy seats with a bassinet In addition to the fact that the baby can sleep peacefully in the bassinet, there is also more space in the first row of seats, which is a great help for parents to take care of their babies and is more comfortable This makes a huge difference on long flights
Remember this tip next time you travel!
Put your mind at ease by booking the bassinet right when you purchase your airfare so you can think about the more exciting parts of your vacation!

Growing up Nadia Lee was told several times that modeling was something she should try at least once in her life
She can't recall a specific moment, but she vividly remembers the feeling of knowing deep down that this was the perfect path for her After she decided to pause her Biology major studies at UBC, Nadia was determined not to waste her time and took the advice of her friends and family to give modeling a try That’s when she found her current agency, Model Made. Model Made is a Canadian-based agency that also represents the international market They are known for being a boutique agency, keeping their model roster very tight Nevertheless, they signed Nadia after just a month of her training at modeling workshops with them!
How did you hear about VFW?
“When I was looking for modeling opportunities in Vancouver, I found out that VFW was holding a casting and I decided to submit on a whim, thinking it wouldn’t hurt to try!”
After she submitted her casting tape, Nadia realized VFW was looking for volunteers to assist with the show's production, backstage tasks, and technicalities before the show Given her eagerness to immerse herself in the fashion industry, she also applied to join as an intern. One way or another, the goal was set
Nadia was soon asked to join the VFW team as a marketing intern “I didn’t join the company to be a model but when I started the internship and modeling they overlapped and intertwined in a way that benefited both opportunities.” Thus getting the internship Nadia booked the modeling job that she first submitted the casting for
“Fast forward to April of 2024, I am now working for VFW and GFC as the PR and RSVP Coordinator

2024 VANCOUVER KIDS FASHION WEEK 45
Having the chance to walk for VFW so early in her career made a great impact not only on her portfolio but in her confidence as an emerging model
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting out in the industry?
“The biggest challenge is learning not to be so selfcritical It is unhealthy to compare yourself to other models both physically and in terms of your career path Everyone’s path to finding success, whether it’s big or small, is drastically different.”
While Nadia is still in the early stages of her modeling career, she recognizes that practice truly does make perfect "Whether it's runway walking or posing, everything in this profession takes real dedication," she affirms. It's worth noting that she has experience in beauty photoshoots, where she had the opportunity to meet incredibly talented individuals from the industry with whom she had created meaningful relationships and gained insight into the Vancouver modeling scene
“
Even though Nadia secured bookings for a variety of jobs as soon as she began modeling, she advises against setting unrealistic expectations, particularly in Vancouver. She reflects, "I booked lots of runway shows and went to Europe Fashion Week in my first months in this industry, which isn’t typical of the modelling life " Instead, she suggests focusing on more work that benefits the portfolio, rather than expecting to be fully booked simply because you're signed by an agency.
I’ve been in Vogue Korea, Vogue Mexico, Elle Japan, Vogue Italia, Elle Italia, Harper's Bazaar, Schön! Magazine, and more that I’m sure I haven’t seen yet!
Nadia remains flexible, and willing to book either runway or commercial jobs However, her most significant opportunities came when she participated in New York, Milan, and Paris Fashion Weeks as part of the Global Fashion Collective. It was a sudden uprising for a model who got signed a couple of months prior before her first Fashion Week walks
