From the president
I look back on 2015, with great satisfaction, at the continuing success of all those associated with the Vancouver Maritime Museum. These include the Executive Director, staff and the volunteers. Their efforts have been well supported by the 15 member Board of Trustees who continue to oversee and work with management as we all seek to ensure that the vision and mission of the museum are clearly present in our collective minds. The Board, the Executive Director and a number of staff met to review and reorganize the priorities to reaffirm a clear and sustainable plan and to ensure continued progress towards our goal of being a “world class maritime museum.” The result was The Strategic Plan for 2015 – 2020 which outlines the steps to achieve an expanded curatorial vision including such things as digital technology to make a more exciting, educational and entertaining experience for our visitors. Now on display is a recreation of the St. Roch wheelhouse, with a simulator allowing the vessel to be steered through an ice bound passage. Other equally exciting digital projects will be completed by mid 2016.
The Board has encouraged and supported the work of the Executive Director to promote the profile of Arctic stories particularly with the recent discovery of the H.M.S Erebus. The exhibit “Across the Top of The World” tells the story of the search for Franklin’s vessels in a most effective way. The support of the Arctic cruise operator One Ocean Expeditions is much appreciated. In addition to being welcomed on board to lecture during a voyage our Executive Director and staff have created pop-up exhibits to be placed on the ships. The Director of Development has been active during the past year in organizing two very successful fund raising events (“Evening at The Museum, fireworks” and the tremendous party “Arctic Gala”). In addition, the Director and staff have worked diligently in preparing applications for funding from such bodies as the City of Vancouver, The B.C Arts Council, the Washington and TK Foundations and many others. We are very appreciative of the support given by all contributors in assisting the VMM to achieve our short and long term goals. Peter Bernard, President of the board of trustees

From the director
“The rise and fall of the ocean swell felt more a comfort than a threat, yet it was never far from my mind that this can be a dangerous place. This is where the weather quickly loses its temper and in fury hurls winds at you way beyond gale force. Storms here have destroyed big ships.” Paul Heiney rounding Cape Horn Over the past few years the Vancouver Maritime Museum has charted different courses, to different places at different times. On my arrival, in 2014, it appeared that we had drifted for a while in a virtual Sargasso Sea while hoping and praying for fair winds and following seas. With the help of an incredible group of individuals from our Board of Directors, Patrons, the Maritime Business elite, the community, staff and dedicated volunteers we began to search out the fair winds and following seas. We found them. At different times storms would rise and tides turn. We would be battered but not broken. Crew would leave and new team members arrive. Rigging would fail and lines needed to be tended – sails mended and course corrections made. But we made them! We made them together! The Vancouver Maritime Museum has been on an incredible voyage and I feel like we have just rounded Cape Horn. We found safe refuge at times with our supporters and patrons, were challenged by the winds of change and embraced opportunities when they arose. Today we are an institution that has touched both the Arctic and Antarctic with the “Across The Top of the World” exhibition, worked with institutions all across Canada, the United States and reached as far as Australia and Greenwich. Truly a global footprint is being established.
The Vancouver Maritime Museum is one of but a handful of Canadian Institutions to benefit from the “Franklin Museum Network” and as such we will be one of the first to acquire educational and historical items, images and material from the exploration of Sir John Franklin’s vessel HMS Erebus. The St. Roch has been fully digitized and the data is finding permanent storage (physical and virtual) with CyArk. The St. Roch simulated wheelhouse experience is up and running, entertaining/educating a whole new generation of children about the St. Roch in the Arctic. Anthony of the Arctic, an interactive virtual underwater experience, will be launching in the next few weeks. This is to introduce children to underwater archaeology and the story of the Erebus. Complimenting this later in the summer “Orion” will open and feature Inuit legends combined with celestial navigation components. All these installations thanks to a partnership with the Center for Digital Media and key community and business leaders. A Northwest Passage transit in 2015 has led our Educational Director to develop a new program called “Extreme Explorers” for delivery to museum visitors. In August of 2016, our Curator will be leading some shore based historical tours and surveys at Dundas Harbour, Devon Island on yet another Northwest Passage transit. These transits are thanks to One Ocean Expeditions.
Our little museum is still facing challenges. Although the Cape has been navigated, ongoing administrative and organizational fine-tuning will continue through until the end of 2016. Modern accounting practices have been introduced; harmonized systems, measures, reporting policies established; and sound business tools are in place. The ship still needs some repairs – the beaten and battered bulworks need attention and we all need your continued support. Safe harbour is just over the horizon and the course corrections now are moderate and measured.

2015 saw the Vancouver Maritime Museum present a number of exciting exhibitions. Invisible Threads was extremely well received. The mayor of Yokohama saw the display while she was in Vancouver and several of the families of Sugihara Visa recipients attended the exhibit’s opening. Across the Top of the World was a wonderful exhibit to present to the public and it was a wonderful opportunity to send a version of it into the Arctic on One Ocean’s Sergey Vavilov. Among the items donated to the museum in 2015 was a flask that belonged to Jack Foster (St. Roch) . What makes this flask particularly unique is the fact that every inch of it is inscribed with names of different people. It was determined that many of these people were individuals Jack Foster met during his time in the Arctic on the St. Roch. This flask was one of the artifacts included in the display on the One Ocean vessel and passengers were encouraged to see how many names they could decipher. Another Arctic endeavour that came to fruition in summer 2015 was the installation of the St. Roch Wheelhouse simulator. The wheelhouse was a wonderful collaborative effort between the Vancouver Maritime Museum, the Centre for Digital Media
(CDM), Haley Sharpe Design and Robert Allan Ltd. which brought a new interactive element to one of the main areas of the museum. For their efforts, the CDM were recognized with two award nominations for the wheelhouse simulation. The popularity of the wheelhouse also resulted in an invitation from the Vancouver International Boat Show to be an exhibitor in 2016. Continuing with the theme of the St. Roch, during the summer and fall of 2015, George Liu from Absolute Space Engineering Inc. spent several weeks creating a 3D digital scan of the St. Roch, both inside and out. This work was done on behalf of CyArk, an organization at the forefront of heritage digitization. Their mission is to digitize the top 500 heritage sites from around the globe and to store this information in a future-proof format for posterity. The Vancouver Maritime Museum also entered into an exciting partnership with several institutions across Canada for “The Franklin Network”. The Network, headed up by Parks Canada and the ROM to tell the story of the historic search for John Franklin’s expedition as well as the recent work done by Parks Canada on the Erebus wreck. 13

inVisiBle threads: liFe saVing sugihara Visas and the Journey to VancouVer apr 10 - Jul 1 2015 In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Vancouver and Yokohama’s sister city relationship, the Vancouver Maritime Museum presented the story of the thousands of Jewish refugees who fled from Nazi occupied Europe during World War II using transit visas issued by Chiune Sugihara, Japanese ViceConsul in Lithuania. Sugihara issued approximately 4,500 visas against the direct orders of his government, permitting the refugees to enter Japan. From the ports of Kobe and Yokohama, many Jewish refugees boarded Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) cruise ships crossing the Pacific Ocean and arrived safely in Seattle and Vancouver.
st. roch Wheelhouse experience permanent interactiVe exhiBit
In 2015 the Vancouver Maritime Museum undertook a unique project in collaboration with the Centre for Digital Media. This simulation is controlled by the visitor, who uses a real ship’s wheel to steer the simulated St. Roch. The sounds and sights of the immersive experience combine to give the visitor the sense that they are standing in a moving ship.
harBour art oct 6 2015 - Jan 3 2016 salt mist seasons: marine art By rosemary hanna Jul 8 - oct 4 2015 Salt Mist Seasons depicted a series of unique and intimate interpretations of vessels and places along the coast of British Columbia. This themed exhibition followed the BC coast from the Southern Gulf Islands north to Desolation Sound.
During the summer of 2015, local Vancouver artists were invited aboard the historic SS Master, moored in False Creek at Granville Island. From this unique location the artists created maritime themed artworks that celebrate Vancouver’s harbours. In October, the Vancouver Maritime Museum was pleased to present a selection of these works in an exhibition titled “Harbour Art”, curated by Jeanne Krabbendam.

across the top oF the World: the Quest For the northWest passage – and traVelling exhiBit In recognition of the discovery of HMS Erebus by Parks Canada, the Vancouver Maritime Museum presented an exhibit telling the story of the quest for the Northwest Passage and the search for John Franklin. The display was based on the book Across the Top of the World, written by former museum director Dr. James P. Delgado, and highlights some of the major endeavours to find a route to Asia through the Canadian North. The exhibit featured artifacts left behind by those searching through the centuries. In the summer of 2015, the museum entered into a partnership with One Ocean Expeditions to provide one of their Arctic cruise ships with a small version of our Across the Top of the World exhibition.

2015 was an interesting year for the w.B. & m.h. Chung library and leonard G. mcCann Archives. We experienced some great highs by receiving many new and exciting donations, but we also had some lows as we mourn the loss of the Archives’ namesake and Curator Emeritus, Len McCann. The Archives has now received the entirety of Len’s records and the immense task of processing the records will begin in 2016. The Library and Archives continue to average approximately 35 reference requests per month with a total of 427 this year. We receive requests from many types of patrons including staff, the general public, authors, film makers, corporations, media, students, and more. Our unique collections continue to draw attention from researchers around the globe. This year we corresponded with clients from France, England, Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and many from across Canada and the United States. This year the Library and Archives received 27 new donations to the collections. Exciting new additions to the Arctic collection include a complete series of the 15 longitude acts including the original 1714 act which offered £20,000 for the discovery of the measurement of longitude. We also gratefully received a copy of the 1745 Northwest Passage Act. These acts that spurred the discovery of the Northwest Passage and inspired many Arctic explorers, are featured in the Across the Top of the World exhibit. Another fascinating donation is the Myles Frederick “Jack” Foster’s memories of the St. Roch recorded on reel-toreel audio tapes. It is our hope that the Archives will be
able to digitize and make these intriguing recordings available to the public in 2016. Another donation of note is the complete works of the magazine Harbour & Shipping (1918 - 2010) bound in high quality leather. Thanks to the publisher, Murray McLellan, this wonderful publication spanning nearly a century has found a permanent home with us. The Librarian & Archivist continues to write the “History Lesson” column for the industry magazine BC Shipping News. Some of the topics covered in 2015 were the story of the supply ship to the Erebus and Terror, the history of the Britannia Shipyard, the history of Vancouver’s foghorns, the story of Vancouver’s fireboats and more. We continually receive positive feedback from readers who discovered the Library and Archives via the articles. We would like to give a special thanks to our volunteer cohort, Elizabeth Hawkins, Michelle Spelay and Dominique Swennen for their fine work this year. We also hosted a wonderful Professional Experience student this spring, Robin Belcher. Robin began a massive collections management project with our chart collection. She truly paved the way for proper arrangement and description of the charts which will greatly improve access to the collection. The Library and Archives looks forward to another extraordinary year of new exhibits, events, donations, and projects in 2016. The best is surely yet to come.
Heritage harbour The Heritage Harbour is an outdoor display of privately owned classic and heritage vessels. The Oarlock and Sail Wooden Boat Club is a Vancouver-based club for enthusiasts of small wooden boats and operates out of a floating workshop at the Heritage Harbour. The Museum partnered with OLSWBC to present several public programs this year. In August 2015, the Heritage Harbour hosted the Ex-Forest Service Vessel Squadron Rendezvous, a public event showcasing former BC Forest Service vessels and their stories as an integral part of BC’s coastal maritime heritage.
Model workshop In the first quarter of last year our Model Maker, Lucian Polias, completed a small model of a classic sailing yacht designed by Vancouver based naval architect Bill Roedde. The model is plank on frames at 1:24 scale showing standing rigging only with no sails. Also during the year lots of repairs and maintenance work was completed on a considerable number of models from the collection. Another exciting project started in 2015, but that will be completed in 2016, is the construction of a historically accurate gun carriage for the 18th Century 24 Lbs British gun we have in our collection. A complete set of drawings was prepared for the execution of this complex and challenging project. One of the most important achievements for 2015 was the completion of the inventory for the entire VMM ship model collection. This gives the Museum a precise view of all models and the option to choose to deaccesion a large number of models which don’t fit the Collection mandate. There is a total of 413 models and about 1/3 are eligible to be deaccesioned. 17

Throughout the year we hosted an archaeology symposium, Greenpeace book launch, a number of wellness seminars, bar mitzvahs, an overnight dry grad, weddings on both the terrace and St. Roch, family celebrations and corporate events. The TK. Gallery was the location of numerous conferences and workshops, including The Surfrider Foundation, Lululemon and a City of Vancouver Active Transportation open house. The Museum opened its doors to offer the Bard on the Beach’s Young Shakespeareans a rehearsal space. We supported the Georgia Straight Alliances’ Waters Edge Day by providing the venue and offering free admission to all that day. It was a fantastic day featuring activities and booths educating visitors on protecting our coastal waters. The year ended with a number of holiday parties, both corporate and private. The trees on the terrace and surrounding area were strung with hundreds of lights, adding a special touch for the season. The lights will stay up year round to add a magical element to events, inside and out. 2015 was a busy year, where we welcomed old partners and made new connections.
Partners & associations Community Partners The museum’s community engagement extends beyond the programs and activities provided by museum staff and volunteers. The museum encourages and supports the activities of other likeminded maritime community groups by offering low cost meeting spaces and business services. The primary criteria for participating in this program are that the group must have a mission statement and objective that is in alignment with the mandate of the museum. This mutually beneficial program not only supports these organizations, but it also enables the museum to engage with different communities of maritime enthusiasts. • Artificial Reef Society of BC: To create environmentally and economicallysustainable “artificial reefs” in British Columbia;
• Oarlock and Sail Wooden Boat Club: Wood boat enthusiasts who build, operate and maintain fleet of small wood boats;
• SS Master Society: Dedicated to the preservation, restoration and operation of the SS Master - the last operational wood hull steam tug on the coast;
• Tiddly Cove Yacht Club: A Vancouver yacht club focused on keelboat cruising and PHRF racing;
• B.C. Ex-Forest Service Vessel Squadron Dedicated to the retired vessels of the B.C. Forest Service and associated vessels;
• Underwater Archaeological Society of BC: A group of volunteers who conserve, preserve, and protect the maritime heritage lying beneath British Columbia’s coastal and inland waters;
• Gulf Yacht Club: A collection of sail-boat owners and their families who like to cruise under sail and explore the waters of British Columbia and beyond (does not include racing);
• World Ship Society of BC: A research community primarily of ships and shipping company history enthusiasts.
The museum continues to support the community by maintaining its membership of the Alliance for Arts and Culture, International Council of Maritime Museums (ICMM), Council of American Maritime Museums (CAMM), Lower Mainland Museum Educators Association, as well as the British Columbia Museums Association (BCMA) and the Canadian Museums Association (CMA).

Arctic gala
It was an evening to remember! The snow fell as promised. The Arctic feast was spectacular. The Dakhká Khwáan Dancers were engaging and the guests enjoyed the audience participation. Hans Gatt, Susie and the two musher dogs were a great attraction with plenty of photo ops. Many braved the sourtoe cocktail challenge and lived to brag about their experience. Special guests Claire Martin, Carson Schiffkorn and Robin Esrock added an extra dimension, humour and insight into the Arctic. We made lots of new friends and caught up with old ones too.

It’s such a great pleasure to work with our amazing group of volunteers at the Vancouver Maritime Museum. In 2015 our core group of volunteers remained consistent, but the number of volunteer hours increased significantly. This means we have been able to efficiently draw on the amazing knowledge and experience that our volunteers bring to the organization and really utilize the talent that volunteers contribute in their various roles. From volunteering in the library, to leading education programs, to helping with special events and to providing the museum with governance and leadership our volunteers have been key to the museum’s success in 2015. A big thank you to all of our volunteers. At our annual volunteer appreciation event, we recognized Norma Dixon as our volunteer of the year. Norma has been volunteering with the organization since 1999. She is very active in the community and her dedication and positive attitude is greatly appreciated by the students and teachers who have visited the museum over her many years of service. Thank you Norma, we really appreciate all that you bring to the Vancouver Maritime Museum. The Vancouver Maritime Museum would also like to recognize two volunteers who contributed over 100 hours as part of their studies. Robin Belcher volunteered in the library to gain professional experience towards her degree at the University of British Columbia and Svea Kramer came to us from ILSC Education Group, an English language school in Vancouver. Both made significant contributions to the museum in 2015.
