Book Launch: Britannia's Navy on the West Coast of North America, 1812-1914 by Barry Gough Thursday, October 6, 2016 - 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm Location: Vancouver Maritime Museum Join us for a talk, Q&A session, and book signing with Dr. Barry Gough, author of Britannia’s Navy on the West Coast of North America, 1812-1914. Get your hands on this new expanded edition of the classic book about the maritime and naval history of the Northwest Coast and the wider Pacific. About the Book: Through the turbulent century from 1812 to the First World War, Britain gained imperial supremacy over the vast Pacific region by means of foreign trade and the unrivalled power of its navy. Key to this policy of expansion was the naval station at Esquimalt. From a small, protected anchorage on southern Vancouver Island, the base would grow to play a central role in the consolidation of British Columbia and the defence of British interests from Victoria to Hawaii to Hong Kong. In this updated edition of his classic naval history first published in 1971, Barry Gough brings new insights to an overlooked chapter of BC history and weaves a fascinating story of diplomacy, nationhood, and colonial conquest in the age of sea power. About the Author: Canadian historian Barry Gough has published more than eighteen books to critical acclaim, including From Classroom to Battlefield: Victoria High School and the First World War; Juan de Fuca’s Strait: Voyages in the Waterway of Forgotten Dreams; http://us7.campaign-archive1.com/?u=0bdd2a5ddde1149e87d0baa93&id=11132a88e4&e=c2be38edb1

VMM September News:

Each year the Vancouver Maritime Museum hosts a Youth Team comprised of high school Subscribe Share Past Issues Translate students from across Vancouver. This year we had 9 youth participants. The Youth Team meets once a month to work on a major project. In addition, Youth Team members help with special events including birthday parties and community events.

This year the Youth Team took on a major project of designing and creating an imaginary chart painted on canvas that can be used as a covering during our Pirates! school program and Pirates! birthday party. Thank you to our 2015-2016 Youth Team members, Hudson Bishop, Priyangah Karunakaran, Justin Wu, Kai Wessner, Josephine Chiang, Kaitlin Xu, Myra Song, Christine Luo, and Joy Gong. Also a big thank you to marine artist, Rosemary Hanna, who came onboard to help guide the artistic process. In September 2016, the Vancouver Maritime Museum will begin the process of recruiting a new Youth Team. Regular meetings will begin in late October or early November. We still haven’t decided on a project for this year’s team to work on, but stay tuned! Any interested high school students should get in touch with Volunteer Coordinator, Andrew Hildred by emailing programs@vanmaritime.com.
