From the moment we sketch the original brief, through countless hours finalising computer designs and prototype testing, to the final phase of production – we keep in our minds the Van Nicholas philosophy of engineered allure.

making plans We know what we are aiming for, but how do we get there? Through hours and hours of painstaking Computer Aided Design, in the first instance, as our initial ideas about desired form and eventual function are mapped out in the 3D virtual world. Here we can test the parameters of our fledgling Van Nicholas using the Finite Element Method to determine, for example, the optimum angles for connecting tubes, the optimum tube thickness to allow effective welding and the optimum diameter to deliver the required performance. Through the combined knowledge and experience of our designers and fabricators, all of these possibilities and problems can be imagined and solved before a single tube is shaped in the real world. And by the end of the process we have a plan we are confident will work, a Van Nicholas on paper, ready to make the next step into its prototype form, already shaped by its distinctive DNA.
coming to life This is in turn the most exciting, and most nerve-wracking part of the process. Our skilled fabricators have
worked with our plans, shaped the Titanium into the frame we envisaged many weeks or months previously. We finally get to see the imaginary made real, hold the cool Titanium balanced in the palm of our hand, weigh up our creation. What if it fails to perform the way we anticipated? What if our rigorous testing regime uncovers a reliability problem we failed to foresee? If these, or other issues arise, we feedback; we take our realworld experience and adapt our design further, keep tweaking and honing and perfecting our prototype. Only when all of the tests have been passed, only when our prototype has become as good as, or better than, the bicycle we first imagined, will we proceed into full scale production. If this takes longer than we wanted, so be it. No Van Nicholas bicycle was ever rushed into being. Of course, a new frame is just

But it does not end there. Once we complete a Van Nicholas and it starts its new life, it also marks the beginning of a new cycle. Any new product will be subject to review; by the press, by the customers, by others in the industry, and, of course, by us. And this feedback is the starting point for the next Van Nicholas. What did we do well? What can we do better? We are never satisfied. Perfection is a fleeting thing: it soon becomes room for improvement when new components appear on the market, or there are advances in fabrication technology, or new discoveries in the field of aerodynamics. The parameters are forever moving, and so we must keep moving, too.

At Van Nicholas, testing falls into four categories: safety, stiffness, fatigue and impact. No matter how long we spend designing and computer modelling, if a prototype fails one single requirement of our testing procedures, the product will be sent back to the design stage to be remodelled. The only thing as tough as our testing? Our Titanium.

This is the first phase of our testing, needed to check the quality of our products and required by law before we can sell our products. Weight and stiffness range, dimensions, and safety markings are checked. And of course no rattling sound or resonance may occur. We must meet ISO/ENstandards, but we believe perfection is only achieved by surpassing expectations, so we set our parameters

en much higher than their requirements. We therefore expect that our design and fabrication stages provide us with prototypes that sail through these tests. The next three phases provide the most interesting feedback on performance. They also happen to be the most punishing.
They all have to conform to our expectations. stiffness The second phase of testing is primarily used to determine whether our frames fall within accepted deflection parameters for functional purposes, but it is also an important barometer for key performance characteristics. We conduct a lateral stiffness test, an out-of-saddle load test and a Gates stiffness test, which concentrates on the high stressed dropout area of the frame. The results will vary depending on the type of frame on test, but they all have to conform to our expectations or it’s back to the drawing board once more.
fatigue This is where it starts to get brutal. For a frame, the primary fatigue tests are the head tube, saddle load and out-of-saddle tests. The first two tests of a road frame simulate a 110kg rider, stressing the upper portion of the frame to its limits over a demanding road surface. The third test simulates the stresses of a sprint or climb by a 110kg rider by applying 1200 Newton to each crank. A lever mechanism conveys chain tension to the rear of the frame. Each of these tests runs for 100,000 cycles, to simulate real world fatigue in a shortened time span. There must be no cracks, no visible deflection and no weakness. Only then can we progress to the final phase.
impact The toughest test of them all. First, we drop the frame so it rotates over its rear axle with an additional 80kg weight which simulates a heavy impact. To pass this test, no cracks or dents should be visible and the difference in wheelbase must be less than 10mm. The second phase involves dropping a 22.5kg weight on the front fork from two different heights, to simulate a head-on impact. A small amount (less than 45mm) of permanent deflection is permissible, but any cracks or loss of structural integrity will result in a fail. So even if a frame

Bij al deze tests worden 100.000 cycli uitgevoerd om metaalmoeheid in het echt te simuleren, maar dan over een kortere tijdsspanne. Er mogen geen scheuren, geen verbuiging en geen zwakte zichtbaar zijn. Alleen dan kunnen we door naar de volgende fase.

Assembling our bikes involves a dedicated team and several stages – order picking, wheel making, handlebars and seat post sub-assembly – before the final station, where one of our master mechanics double checks the sub-assemblies and brings everything together to complete the build. There is no time limit for this process at Van Nicholas; our mechanics must take as long as they need to ensure nothing is overlooked and the finished bicycle is of the highest standard. Once the bike is fully assembled, it passes to our quality control team, who ensure everything, from hood covers down to dust caps, is correctly fitted and fully operational. Only then will the final product be delivered to the toughest tester of them all: you, the Van Nicholas rider.

We have been designing Titanium bicycles for over a dozen years, and during that time we’ve seen a lot of components. Some of them are excellent, truly world-class and impossible to better, but others haven’t lived up to expectations. Sometimes the right component for the particular bike we’re designing doesn’t exist. Sometimes the component exists, but it doesn’t perform as well as we would like. We could compromise, make do, accept what we have and get on with it. But we’re on a quest; a quest for perfection. So this will not do. We applied our design expertise to the problem instead, and made a range of components that fit our bikes perfectly, that solve problems, that meet our expectations. They also deliver on performance and minimalist Van Nicholas aesthetics, too. But then, they wouldn’t be here if they didn’t.

One of my first childhood memories was my father teaching me to ride. Everyone saw that I wasn’t exactly a natural talent. But when my father eventually gave up and told me I would never learn, I picked up my bike, told him ‘I can do it’, jumped on and left. From that moment on I haven’t stopped.

Maar toen mijn vader het opgaf en mij vertelde dat ik het nooit zou leren, pakte ik mijn fiets, zei hem dat ik het wél kon en fietste weg. Vanaf dat moment ben ik niet meer gestopt.
About a decade ago I bought my first road bike and took up triathlon. That’s when my affection for the bicycle became a passion. A passion so intense I can’t imagine my life without it. As a competitive triathlete, most rides are completely dominated by the bike computer. It’s all about speed, heart rate and power. I use my Van Nicholas to escape from this regime. Having owned a Van Nicholas Yukon for nearly ten years, only one MTB stood out: the new Revelstoke. I liked the 650B+ wheels, the long seatpost, and most of all, the appeal of titanium: comfort off road!
Ik ben al 10 jaar in het bezit van een Van Nicholas Yukon en bij het zoeken naar een nieuwe MTB sprong één fiets erboven uit: de nieuwe Revelstoke. Ik viel voor de 650B+ wielen, de lange zadelpen, en vooral voor de eigenschappen van Titanium: een comfortabele offroad ervaring!
I prefer long rides, I like to be ‘out there’ rather than ‘in the zone’. I prefer taking in the fresh air and sights over circuits and intervals. The latest ride (a 300km off road event), had me chasing large badgers down tracks, bunny hopping rabbits, watching in awe at the barn owls as they swooped silently overhead; enjoying the solar rays, the relentless deafening wind, and then the quiet and stillness of the night. The sure-footed poise of Renée (yes, I name my bikes!) and the muffled sound of the plus-sized tyres deforming around the endless rocks. The feel of the wind and sun, then the dampness of the dew as the night grew cooler, my senses heightened by exhaustion; the bonus of Strava KOM’s at the end of the ride – it was an extra special experience. Attack and Renée will lead me forward, relax and she will comfort me. She is my one bike to do it all; the ride of my life.

For the past decade my bike has served as my premier means of transport. The humble bicycle allows me to venture into areas cars, trains and busses simply cannot go. I often cycle for more than 12 hours in a day, then camp in places few people ever visit. Forests, beaches and canyons become my private hideaways.

On that particular ride my bike struggled with the stresses and strains of crossing a continent, so for my latest adventure through Scandinavia I knew I needed something better suited to the job.
