project : Integration of culture, landscape and reforestation year : September 2010 - May 2011 location : Mount Kinabalu, Borneo professor : Julia Watson brief : Language is the essance of a group of people’s culture. Language is memory. Research began through the connections found between culture and nature ir relationship to ecological disasters. A deep tie was found in the forests of Borneo, where the indigenous people have a intrinsic cultural connection to the land and its development. A design intervention was created that would combine local cultural and reforestation through “growing education centers, entitled ethnobotanical medicinal centers.

A multi-scalar framework is established within the design in order to ensure a viability of the regrowth system as well as creating a reconnection between the local cultures and the forest ecology. The largest, global scale, is established with interest in the area as not only a place for resource extraction but instead as a place for growth and economic establishment with carbon offsetting. The design criteria form a framework that moves from larger strategies to local tactics that focus on a connection between the local culture and the forest, this being the plant life found at the forest floor used for medicinal purposes. Thus establishing the medicinal centers as an architectural installment.

project : Cantos National Music Centre year : January 2010 - May 2010 location : Calgary, Canada professor : Demetrios Comodromos and Mark Mistur brief : This project was developed within the Design Development studio along with a team of engineering students in order to understand the construction and detailing of a building while maintaining a strong conceptual design. Adapted from a competition project submitted by SPF Architects, the project is intended to revitalize the area while exposing the people to a new concept of sound.

By understanding the layering done within acoustical theaters in order to create barriers for sound, a new type of theater space can be created. An interactive and publicly exposed acoustic and performance space. In opening up the wall system and creating a “soundscape”, movement through the space reflects the program of the theater and establishes a new boundary between the listener and performer.

project : Single Family Housing year : January 2009 - May 2009 location : Long Island, New York professor : Ted Ngai brief : Developed at the Center for Architecture Science and Ecology, this studio had two primary interests in re-examining the typical single family house. First, the wall. How poche space in a drawing that indicate a separation of spaces can be designed in a different way to allow for perforations to be created while maintaining privacy required in a house. Second, the skin. How developing technologies can be applied to housing in order to minimize global impact and maximize new design systems.

The paneled, weaving wall system that is implemented along the skin within optimal positions creates a blend between design and new technologies. The center of the panel hold a magnifying glass that focuses solar on to a chip. Through the ceramic pieces, runs water that is used to both cool down the chip as it heats up as well as provide hot water for the house minimizing the need for alternative heating.

PRIVACY IS ONLY CREATED THROUGH THE ILLUSION OF A BOUNDARY.

Professional Design Work year : Jul - Sep 2010 + Dec - Jan 2010/11 location : Ballinger A|E brief : During my internship at Ballinger A|E I was involved in various modes of design work. I worked closely with the design team and studio heads during the development of various educational and health care projects. Tasks included designing, presentation mediums (rendering + physical modeling), drafting, interior layouts, surveying, and on site punch listing of completed projects. Here I have included some of the final presentation materials that I created.

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Participation on this project includes: developed and edited construction documents for the kitchen/cafeteria redevelopment. On site punchlisting of completed floors. Developing proposal drawings for on-going construction areas. Worked primarily within AutoCad in a design team as well as directly with the studio leads.

GWU Science + Engineering Hall Developed initial schematic models for design presentations as well as site plan research and drawing.

University of Texas Engineering Complex Proposal Constructed site model as well as addition proposal model for design presentation. Also developed and photoshopped initial renderings for proposal. Worked within the design development team and lead design principal.

University of Pittsburgh Salk Hall Addition Led the development of the final model for client. Laid out all laser cut files and worked within a team for the construction of model.

Professional Design Work year : May - Sep 2012 location : CorePower Yoga brief : As an associate designer for studio design and development at CorePower Yoga, my primary position consisted of working on construction documentation (including drawings, material specification and other various construction documents). Assisted during the construction management phase of projects. Acting main liaison between Ellis Contracting Inc. and CorePower Yoga for studio maintenance and repair.

CorePower Yoga, various locations Worked on construction documentation for upcoming studios in Illinois, California, Washington D.C and Boston. Assisted with studio openings for projects in California and Washington.
