A year long project was dedicated to looking at the ties between culture and nature, and how as an architect we can find seemingly unconnected links between the two to develop projects that focus on ecological and environmental issues. This particular project, “Rehabilitating Forested Languages”, focused on the ties between the loss of the world‘s languages and deforestation. Language is the essence of a group of people’s culture. Language is memory. A deep tie was found in the forests of Borneo, where the indigenous people have a intrinsic cultural connection to the land and its development. A design intervention was created that would combine local cultural and reforestation through “growing” education centers, entitled ethnobotanical medicinal centers.
