THE EDITOR'S NOTE IN THIS issue, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War. At 11am on Sunday 11th November 2018, communities throughout the country will mark this annual act of remembrance which this year takes on additional significance. For 11 years, I have been a councillor in my home town of Godalming and have been enormously proud to represent those who elected me at our annual service. In all those years, the weather has been extremely kind to all of us who parade and then gather at the war memorial for our act of remembrance. What has struck me most is the increasing number of people, mainly families, not only coming along to view the parade but actually take part in the service. Our service is one of great solemnity, where the two minute silence is only ever broken only by the gentle clatter of the London to Portsmouth train, as hundreds of men, women and children remember those who gave their lives in WWI, some 281 from Godalming alone, as well as those who fell in subsequent campaigns. It is a service replicated all over the country, a time for us all to reflect, to honour, and to give thanks. Every year I also get the chance to sell Royal British Legion poppies, and I am always delighted with the generosity shown by so many. People already wearing a poppy quite often will empty their pockets into the tin as they walk past, and notes are now much more common, although it must be said that the new polymer bank notes are not as easy to fold â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but please do not let that stop you from giving as generously as you can this year! It would be very fitting for the Royal British Legion to collect a record amount, this year of all years.

Will making – when is pressure “undue influence”? In our specialist Contentious Trusts and Probate team, we are often approached by clients who have concerns that a recently deceased loved one may have been pressurised into making their Will. Is this grounds for challenging the validity of a Will? In short, perhaps - but it is not straightforward. A legal challenge as to the validity of a Will on the basis of excessive pressure by a third party is known as “undue influence”. One of the most succinct definitions of what constitutes “undue influence” came in Hall v Hall, a case from the 1860s. In this case the type of pressure that would be classed as unlawful was described as of such “character if so exerted as to overpower the volition without convincing the judgment of the testator (the person making the Will)… though no force has been either used or threatened”. However, some pressure exerted on a testator is not unlawful. In the Will making process it is not uncommon for testators to consult with others (for example, their children) and for these third parties to try to influence the testator into making a Will in their favour. The key is that the contents of the Will must still reflect the testator’s own freely made decisions. For pressure to be unlawful, we are looking for examples of coercion where the testator is acting contrary to their own free will and choice.

However, having said that, note that a frail testator giving into pressure for a “quiet life” could constitute undue influence. Circumstances are key and different levels of pressure will overpower different individuals. Practically speaking, how common are these claims? Whilst we receive a lot of enquiries about undue influence, one of the first points we like to make is that historically successful claims challenging the validity of a Will on the basis of undue influence are very rare. Whilst the legal concepts are relatively straightforward, the real issue is evidence. The person with the best knowledge of the events is unfortunately dead (i.e. the testator). Whilst we would advise clients to approach undue influence claims with extreme caution, this should not put people off from carrying out investigations if they have suspicions of foul play. There are also linked claims which can be run as an alternative to undue influence and as such, it is always worth seeking a specialist legal opinion if you have concerns regarding a Will.

100 YEARS OF MUSIC A CONCERT of great Russian Masterpieces on 24th November at G Live marks the start of Guildford Symphony Orchestraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Centenary season, a stunning achievement for an organisation made up of local musicians from every walk of life. Since its foundation in 1919, the Guildford area has produced a continuum of amateur musicians playing to an incredibly high standard, generation after generation. Doctors, teachers, lawyers, housewives, students, techy whizzes, accountants and more â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this area has been rich in musical talent for 100 years. GSO now performs five concerts a year. Under musical director Darrell Davison, it specialises in the grand symphonic works of the 19th and 20th centuries and also works with young soloists and encourages a love of music in young children. Vibrant, up for challenges and still full of enthusiasm, GSO is ready for its next century. The orchestra was created by an extraordinary man who had been a towering musical force in the Army during the First World War. Claud Powell was a man of incredible drive and enthusiasm who believed in the power of music to heal the country.

commitment to music-making and in particular his promotion of English composers. Come the end of the Second World War however, and councils were encouraged to support and provide music for the public. Powell understandably refused the peremptory summons to hand over his orchestra to the borough with no role for himself. Suddenly there were two orchestras in Guildford. The borough had created the professional Guildford Philharmonic. Powell soldiered on, his achievements recognised with an OBE, Hon RAM and Hon RCM for services to British music. After his death in 1959, the orchestra continued under Ralph Nicholson, but its fortunes dipped in the 1970s-80s until Darrell Davison took up the baton in 1990. Under Davison, the GSO developed a new profile: to perform good music, encourage young talent and support local charities. The 1990 chairman Robin Chase was inspirational, involving members of the orchestra in publicity, social events and fundraising and the orchestra took on a new zest for life. Davison

He had an ambitious vision to set up a series of subscription concerts across the South East. Reality kicked in and Guildford Symphony Orchestra was born, providing a huge range of concerts involving local choirs and drawing critical acclaim from the national press. Powell had an enviable network of friends and contacts across the musical world. GUILDFORD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - 100 YEARS OF MUSIC children. Peter and the Wolf was the highlight of this autumn’s family concert. Where does the orchestra perform? It has always struggled to find suitable venues. It started 100 years ago in St Nicholas’ Hall, the Technical College Hall and the Borough Hall in North Street. More recently it used the Civic Hall, Guildford Cathedral and Spectrum Leisure Centre. Now it centres on G Live, St Catherine’s School concert hall and Charterhouse Hall.

The Philharmonic was disbanded in 2013 because of council cuts. So GSO is once again the premier symphonic orchestra in the borough. This spring, as part of the GSO Centenary Season, it will play St John’s Smith Square on 23rd Marchbefore returning to G Live on 18th May. Please go and support it. How to retire with more income. There is a saying, “The more you put into life the more you get out”. Of course, that is all blindingly obvious, but it is the same with your pension. What is not so obvious is how to get more into your pension so that you can get more out, when you retire. Here are a few ideas, which may help. THE IMPORTANCE OF ONE PENSION POT. If you have a number of pension plans of different employers or companies, it helps to bring all these plans together into one pension pot. This gives you a wider choice of the best investments and helps you keep track of your pension pot. Moving all your old pensions to a single modern pension plan would ensure you benefit from the new Pensions Freedom. STATE PENSION * Ensure you check your state pension in case you need to top it up. This is particularly relevant if you are self-employed or a woman. In the years leading up to your retirement, topping up your state pension could make a big difference. INCREASE YOUR PENSION CONTRIBUTIONS ANNUALLY If you are self-employed, make sure that you put in an escalation feature on your pension plan. This could be an annual increase in contributions by RPI or say 5% per annum, thus keeping your pension in line with inflation. If you are employed this increase may be done automatically. MAXIMISE YOUR WORKPLACE PENSION CONTRIBUTIONS You and your employer pay a minimum amount into your workplace pension scheme based on your total earnings between £5,876 and £40,000 per annum before tax. If you were to increase your contributions, some employers will increase theirs. It would be beneficial to have a conversation with them to discuss this. Clearly, the more that goes into your pension plan the higher your income in retirement. ENSURE YOU HAVE PAID THE QUALIFYING 35 YEARS OF NATIONAL INSURANCE * If you have any gaps on your National Insurance record resulting from caring for children or illness, National Insurance credits allow you to filI in those gaps. INCREASE YOUR PENSION CONTRIBUTIONS WHEN YOUR SALARY INCREASES Increase your pension contributions when your income increases. If you are looking to receive a pay rise or if you are selfemployed and you increase your profits then you can put part of the increase into your retirement pot by increasing your pension contributions. REMEMBER TO GO BACK 3 YEARS AND CARRY FORWARD YOUR TAX RELIEFS * The maximum annual contribution permitted from both employer and employee combined is currently £40,000. ‘Carry forward’ allows you to make use of any unused annual allowance over the previous three tax years. This can boost your pension considerably without incurring any tax. By planning sooner rather than later could ensure a greater amount of income for your retirement.

They shall grow not old… Andy Thompson commemorates the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI ‘THE WAR That Will End War’ wrote the famous Surrey-based writer HG Wells in October 1914 as he reflected on the opening weeks of what was to become known as the Great War. The chiming bells at 11 o’clock on 11th November 1918 suggested his prescience to be very accurate. The First World War cost over 10 million young men their lives, 20 million were wounded and millions more traumatised and simply sent back to pick up the pieces of civilian life. Britain was bankrupt, the class system seriously eroded and, for a great many, any thought of a loving God became a difficult concept and the role of women in Britain was changed forever. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month this year the bells across the length and breadth of Britain will ring again to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the armistice that caused the guns to fall silent, ending the war that had engulfed the world with 89 countries being directly involved in the conflict. The 11th November is a Sunday this year and across Surrey and Sussex local communities will join the nation in remembering those who made the ‘supreme sacrifice’ for their country.

The men who returned to Surrey and Sussex after the war were promised ‘A Land Fit for Heroes’ but reality proved to be far harsher, as the collapse in the world economy led to hardship and widespread discontent. Wages were cut, the working week lengthened as war time contracts were ended. The millions of women who had responded to the call of ‘total war’ found themselves thrown out of work as the men returned. Whilst those over 30 and who owned property were given the vote in the Khaki election held in December 1918, most women returned to their role as homemakers and mothers. As with counties across the UK, the war brought out the best of the men and women of Surrey and Sussex. Thousands of men volunteered or were conscripted to fight for King and Country and joined their local regiments – The Queen’s (Royal West

THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD Surrey Regiment), The East Surreys or The Royal Sussex Regiment. All three regiments fought proudly with bravery and discipline fashioned in their distinguished histories. The East Surrey Regiment was deployed in August with the B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) and became part of the legendary ‘Old Contemptibles’ (so called when the British army was described as ‘a contemptible little army’ by Kaiser Wilhelm II). They fought in most of the major battles of the war. Seven of their number were awarded the Victoria Cross – the highest medal for ‘bravery in the face of the enemy’ and Captain Billy Neville entered the history books when he gave footballs to his attacking companies with a promise of a bottle of champagne for the first to get their ball into the German front line trench. As with 446 of his men, Captain Neville didn’t survive the first day of the Battle of the Somme. In total the regiment lost 6,223 officers and men killed during the war. The Queen’s list of Battle Honours is equally impressive with their involvement in the bitter fighting of the autumn of 1914, Loos in 1915, High Wood on the Somme, the taking of the Messines Ridge in June 1917 and the final 100 Days in 1918 which saw the German army driven out of France and Belgium. Their casualties impacted on the communities and families around Surrey. 7,399 officers and men being killed, and 4 Queen’s being awarded the VC.

The men of Sussex would have, in the main, joined The Royal Sussex, another regiment with a proud history. They too were deployed along the Western Front and served in the ill-fated attempt to defeat the Turks in Gallipoli during 1915. On 30th June 1916, the day before Haig launched his attack on the Somme, the men from Sussex led a diversionary attack on the Germans at The Boars Head. Commanded by Lieut Col Lowther they suffered appalling casualties with over 1000 of ‘Lowther’s Lambs’ being killed or wounded. The action became known as The Day Sussex Died. Undertones of War, the autobiography of Edmund Blunden, who fought with the regiment during most of the war, became a set text for those trying to



The explosion damaged 70,000 houses and the bang was heard in Norwich and Salisbury! In 1920, the body of the Unknown Warrior was returned from the battlefields of the Western Front and was received at the Cenotaph in Whitehall by King George V. He asked the committee organising the event that as the clock of Big Ben struck 11 the nation should fall silent for two minutes – the first minute to remember the dead and the past, the second to be thankful for those who had survived and the future. In 1920 the nation did indeed fall silent – trains, traffic and factories all stopped and the populace across the land stood still. We should do the same this year. month, Ian Swankie will examine the ‘Treasures of the Square Mile’. Next March, the day is devoted to ‘Monet and the Impressionists’. There are outings for members to country houses and gardens, exhibitions and galleries. Last April, a walk round the City of London looked at some of the impressive new buildings, with visits to some wonderful old churches and the Roman wall. The most recent annual tour, based in Birmingham, took in the ‘Treasures of the Kingdom of Mercia’ including the Jewellery Quarter, Lichfield and Bletchley Park. Next May, ‘The History and Heritage of the West Riding’ will focus on Yorkshire. WHAT’S IN a name? Guildford Wey Valley DFAS may have changed its name, but the range and quality of its monthly talks is still as impressive. If you like watching ‘The Antiques Roadshow’, or appreciate well-researched talks about architecture, art, ceramics, gardens, music or ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, come along and judge for yourself. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month, in Shalford Village Hall. Coffee is on hand from 9.45am. Talks begin at 10.45am.

Members can take advantage of all these activities and receive the quarterly Arts Society magazine. There are opportunities for heritage volunteering, including Young Arts and Church Trails, and the chance to acquire new skills. Membership costs £45 per year. Visitors are welcome at every meeting, and pay £7. You can be sure of a warm welcome, so come along and find out for yourself.

Recent topics have ranged from Frieda Kahlo to Eric Ravilious, Architecture in Docklands to the East India Company. Another speaker presented numerous examples of the work of David Hockney in a superb talk focusing on Hockney’s unique contribution to British Art. In contrast, ‘Three Great Families and their Gardens’ explored the lives of the Sackville-Wests, the Astors and the Rothschilds and the beautiful gardens they and their armies of gardeners created. This coming year, talks range from ‘The Glories of Byzantium’ to ‘Poet in Paint; the Art and Life of Paul Nash’. Unmissable is the May talk on ‘The Punch and Judy Show’ by Bertie Pearce, highlighting the subversive nature and anarchic figure of Mr Punch. As a member of the Magic Circle, Bertie holds his audience spellbound, peppering his talk with conjuring tricks. On study days, twice a year, speakers explore a topic in greater depth. ‘Great Tarts in Art’ offered a fascinating exploration of the court of Charles II and his bevy of lovely ladies, whose looks are still admired today in the portraits of Peter Lely. This

Beat the itch this winter Zoe Blake takes a look at a common problem in house pets ITâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S THAT time of year many pet owners fear, as the weather turns colder, the heating comes on, and the fleas appear. Did you know that the fleas on your pet represent only about 5% of the flea population? The other 95% sadly live in the environment that your pet spends its time in. To keep fleas at bay, it's important to understand the flea life cycle The life cycle comprises approximately eggs (50%), larvae (35%), pupae (10%), flea (5%). When fleas land on your pet they feed, breed and start to lay eggs. The eggs will drop into the environment, where they will hatch into larvae. Larvae don't like light so they will burrow away into carpets, bedding and floor cracks. They live off flea dirt and skin debris and then spin into a pupae. Here the flea develops before hatching out to find a host (you or your pet!). The pupae have a very tough coating which makes them robust to vacuuming and chemicals. When faced with the correct stimuli they will hop onto their host and so the cycle starts again. Vibration, CO2 and humidity are what fleas prefer, so turning the heating on and spending more time in the home is creating the perfect ambiance. Pupae have been known to remain in the environment for up to 2 years. So what should you do if your pet has fleas? If you use effective flea treatment on your pet, then it can take about 6 weeks to take effect. This is allowing for the various stages of the life cycle to complete and re-infest your pet. You need to back this up with regular vacuuming and washing of your pet's bedding.

Before using the household products, turn your heating up, place bowls of steamy water into each room and hoover. This will ensure that you can eradicate as much of the flea life cycle as possible. I recommend that you repeat this process in 10-14 days. The pupae is the most resistant of the cycle and so leaving some time gives the immature fleas time to develop in the pupae and allow them to be ready to hatch out at your next treatment. Warming dishes for chilly days Aromatic beef with orange and apricots

Spanish pork with butter beans and chorizo

Ingredients:

450g/1lb lean braising or topside steak, cubed, 5ml/1tsp fennel seeds, 5ml/1tsp ground coriander, 2 sprigs fresh thyme, 1 garlic clove, peeled and finely chopped, 2 small onions, peeled and sliced, 2 carrots, peeled and roughly chopped, 50g/2oz dried apricots, chopped, 50ml/2floz orange juice, 2 sticks celery, roughly chopped, 100ml/3½floz red wine, 30ml/2tbsp red wine vinegar, 30ml/2tbsp oil, 30ml/2tbsp plain flour, 15ml/1tbsp tomato puree, optional, 800ml/1½pint beef stock, 175g/6oz button mushrooms.

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 4-5, 180-190°C, 350375°F 2. In a large bowl mix together the beef, fennel seeds, coriander, thyme, garlic, onions, carrots, apricots, orange juice, celery, red wine, red wine vinegar and seasoning. Cover the marinade and if possible leave in the refrigerator for 2 hours or overnight. 4. Drain the marinade mixture and reserve. Heat the oil in a medium-sized casserole or ovenproof dish and brown the meat with the vegetables in batches. Stir in the flour, reserved marinade, tomato puree, beef stock, and bring to the boil. Add the button mushrooms, halved, if preferred. 5. Transfer to the oven and cook for 1½-2 hours, stirring occasionally, or until the meat is tender.

Ingredients:

2 tsp olive oil, 50g chopped chorizo, 1 onion, sliced, 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into thin strips, 4 pork loin steaks, 2 tsp smoked paprika, 400g can chopped tomatoes, 400g can butter beans, drained and rinsed, 150ml hot vegetable or chicken stock, salt and freshly ground black pepper, 2 tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley.

Method:

1. Heat the oil, in a non-stick frying or sauté pan with a lid, over a medium heat. Add the chorizo, onion and red pepper and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chorizo has released its oil and the onion and pepper have softened. Remove from the pan to a plate and set aside. 2. Add the pork steaks to the pan and cook for three minutes on one side, then turn over, and cook for 2 minutes. Return the chorizo and pepper mixture to the pan and stir in the paprika. 3. Stir in the tomatoes, butter beans and stock. Bring to a simmer, then cover the pan with a lid and simmer for 5 minutes, until the steaks are cooked through and the juices run clear.

6. Serve with herb mash and spring greens.

4. Season to taste and sprinkle with the parsley. Divide between 4 plates and serve with green vegetables.

Fabulous Phalaenopsis! Phalaenopsis plants are such a blessing; they’re always at our side, bringing elegance to our living rooms, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Phalaenopsis can be so floriferous; they flower whatever the weather or season, and can bloom continuously for a year or more at a time. These glamorous plants enhance any home, from chic apartments to country estates. I first saw Phalaenopsis ‘Sunny Smell’ at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year 2016 stand at Chelsea. In the cool temperatures that day I could not detect any fragrance from this orchid’s sunset yellow blooms, but now that I have my own plant, I can enjoy the fragrance of this Phalaenopsis. It’s a warm perfume, which has been enjoyed by my visitors. Another AGM Phalaenopsis that I have particularly enjoyed getting to know, is Phalaenopsis ‘New Life’. This is a truly delightful Phalaenopsis. ‘New Life’ produces ivory flowers, which are delicately infused with a soft dusky pink. The overall look of the plant is very romantic and ethereal, it has a rather soothing quality. The centre of each bloom is quite charmingly freckled and the overall look is divine! Phalaenopsis ‘New Life’ produces a light, floral scent, these orchids are most fragrant in the mornings. THIS YEAR, I’ve enjoyed getting to know a couple of new Phalaenopsis hybrids. These plants were grown in the UK by Double H Nurseries, and they’re part of the nurseries’ new range of Phalaenopsis plants, which have all been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. The Award of Garden Merit (AGM) was set up by the Royal Horticultural Society, to help gardeners find plants that will perform well in regular growing conditions, without any specialist care or attention. Plants that receive this accolade are reliable plants, that are reasonably disease-resistant and free -flowering. If you’re looking at a selection of plants and aren’t sure which one to choose, an AGM plant is a plant you can purchase knowing that particular plant has been trialled and tested and will perform well given the appropriate conditions. You’ll find AGM plants at your nursery, or garden centre, and online. These plants display the RHS AGM trophy symbol.

WEEKEND WALK

Aldershot and the Basingstoke Canal This is a walk of great variety, combining pine woods, an oak wood, a great sandy wilderness and a canal towpath. The route goes over the huge wild Aldershot sand hills and pine forests. This is Defence land but if there are no live exercises, families, children and dogs are always welcome. Humph and I very much enjoyed it in June of this year. Before you do this walk, check that there is pedestrian access to Rushmoor Road. There is some uncertainty about the small pedestrian access which is locked at night and should be opened each morning, except for some military or ceremonial reason. Sometimes the main gate is open; sometimes walkers and cyclists have to climb over because both gates are locked. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to get definitive guidelines from the MoD. Do not do this walk during the Farnborough Airshow because some paths and especially Rushmoor Road at the start will be closed off. This walk is taken with permission from www.fancyfreewalks.org. SR 1. From the Duke's Wood car park, go out to the road, turn left and, in 50m, turn right on Rushmoor Road. (Rushmoor Road is closed to motor traffic: your access is through a pedestrian gate on the left of the large metal gates.) After 500m through forest, just after a left bend, you see a metal barrier on your right, just before a bridge over a track. Turn right here down a slope to arrive at a junction of paths. Avoid the first path on your left, continue another 25m to cross a narrow stream (the Claycart Stream) and turn left on a narrow path which runs beside the stream on your left. 2. The path is muddy at first but quickly improves. In nearly 100m your path goes over a crossing path. In another 200m your path reaches a crossing track. Go straight over, still following the Claycart Stream but this time with it on your right. If you hear a din of engines nearby on your left, this is from the Aldershot Raceway where hotrods compete in the Caravan Destruction Derby and other delights. As you continue through this beautiful oakwood, the stream on your right sinks into a deep cleft. Finally, 400m from the last crossing, you meet a narrow path on your right where the stream runs over a concrete channel and cascades down. 3. Turn right here over the channel, to come out in 50m onto the open sandy moor. Turn left on a The Walk 8

wide surfaced track. In 250m, you reach a major 3-way junction. Turn sharp right on a wide path which curves left uphill. Keep going for 650m on this undulating path to pass a large pinewood on the right of your path with a track running through it. Continue past the pinewood, out into the open again, for another 80m. Here the wide path forks. Take the right fork, a wide sandy path which branches off diagonally. 4. Your course is now fairly straight for 1m. In 150m your path runs beside a pinewood on your right, enters the wood and emerges again in 150m. It winds left and right and comes out of the dark woods up into an open space where a path joins you from the left. The path descends gradually, reenters woodland and arrives at a metal barrier with a warning notice about the Test Track ahead which is used to test military hardware. Shortly after the notice, a wide track merges with your path from the right and your path ahead forks. Keep to the left fork here. (The right fork could be used by military vehicles although they are very rarely seen anywhere, even by regular walkers). In 300m, your path goes through a metal kissing-gate next to an animal grid. Just 30m further, turn left through a metal kissing-gate. 5. In 100m, your wide path bends left and passes a little pond on the right (which may be dry). 40m after the pond, turn right on a clear path through gorse bushes. Keep following this undulating and winding path with a hillock on your left, avoiding side turnings, heading towards the pinewoods and the possible sound of traffic on the main road. Your path curves left to meet a crossing path. Here turn right on a narrow path, thus leaving your previous path which continues upwards over the heath with the hillock on the left. Your new path keeps you in the same direction as before, down a small dip. Note that it is very narrow. (This area has been cleared of gorse bushes and you may still see the remaining stumps). The path goes past some pines and takes you through a swing-gate (sometimes awash: please help by dropping a brick or a log!). Cross straight over a wide grassy strip onto a very narrow path into the trees opposite. Keep to this winding path, through hollies, leading up to a car

Mary Watts: Pioneering Suffragist Throughout November The eightieth anniversary of Mary Watts's death in 2018 marks one hundred years since the Representation of the People Act in 1918, which enabled all men and some women over the age of 30 to vote for the first time, and ninety years since the Equal Franchise Act in 1928, which finally gave women the right to vote at age twenty-one on the same terms as men. To coincide with this significant anniversary they will present a display titled 'Mary Watts: Pioneering Suffragist'.
