• THE EDITOR'S NOTE I hope you like our cover image this month. The Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) have commissioned six of these fabulous prints to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the formation of this AONB, which was the second one formed in England and covers a quarter of the county. If you do like these images, we are running a competition this month to win a framed copy of the print of your choice. Please see our competitions page in the magazine and online for more details. We do feature information about and from the Surrey Hills AONB reasonably regularly in these pages as I think they do an absolutely marvellous job of helping to protect our glorious countryside. As another celebration of their 60th anniversary, they have also produced a list of 60 places to see in the Surrey Hills, a small number of which we have featured in this issue. I am guilty, like many of us I suspect, of visiting places far and wide and leaving interesting places on our doorstep for another day, which then seldom comes. I shall therefore try to visit all of these before the end of the year if I can! Staycations have become more and more popular, given the cost and the irritation that overseas travel often brings with it. There is always so much to do and to see in this country and given recent weather, we can now stay at home to get a sun tan. Godalming has run its own Staycation programme for the past eight years, probably the largest one in the country. The town council works with many local organisations to put on more than 70 free or subsidised activities and attractions for adults, children and families. It really is a great community event and I am always surprised that more towns or villages do not do something similar.

Blenheim Court is a beautiful 60 bedded care home in west Liss, Hampshire. Our aim is to provide unique personalised care through supporting the independence of the people who choose to live at our home. The care homes facilities include Bistro and Bar, Beauty Salon, Cinema, Music room and Library, all set in a luxurious and modern surroundings. Choosing the right care home can be a difficult decision, however at Blenheim Court we believe that you can give your loved one the opportunity to live a fuller and more vibrant quality of life in a safe and warm environment. One of the family members of a lady living in the care home wanted to share her experiences of the home since her mother came to stay with us. What attracted you to Blenheim Court? Well I kept seeing the ads and wondering where it was. I drove past, and then called in. Lee the Care Home Manager showed me around and it such was an amazing place, I knew it was right for Mum. How would you describe the care that your Mum gets at Blenheim Court? You can't describe it, it excels everything we have ever expected of a care home. Nothing is too much trouble for any of you. She (Mum) will mention things and it happens, her individual needs are met and everything she could possibly hope for.
How does Blenheim Court support you as a family member? Well in every way. We know all of Mum's needs are being catered for. I went on holiday recently, completely relaxed, knowing if anything arose she would be well looked after. The staff are very well trained, and I honestly don’t think anything could happen that couldn’t be dealt with by the people working there. What does good care look like and how does that differ for your Mum? Nothing is too much trouble, nothing we have asked for has ever been a no, every need is catered for. You have dealt with Mum so well, she is encouraged daily and has companionship, from the people living with her and the staff that pop and speak with her throughout the day. She doesn’t have to ask for anything, it is offered, and that goes for us too. She is so happy there at Blenheim Court she said to me she would rather have less time here then longer anywhere else. Her social life is incredible and I have to check if she is there or not. Everyone is included and everyone is looked after, it is a brilliant place. Its not like a care home, it’s a hotel. The whole family, including grandkids, are happy to see her so happy in her new home. The care that we have available here at the home includes Dementia Care, Short Term Care, Nursing Care, Palliative Care, Residential Care, Respite Care and Day Care.
For more information or a tour of our facilities please contact Sabrina at 01730 606530 or email Sabrina.waterhouse@blenheim-court.com
FOR THE LOVE OF
CHEESE Phil Kemp meets artisan cheesemakers Pam and Francis Gimblett OPERATING FROM a well-equipped microdairy in the Surrey Hills near Haslemere, Pam and Francis Gimblett produce a fragrant soft washed-rind cheese they endearingly call Floyd, to their own unique recipe developed through sheer hard work and undoubtedly mixed with an intuitive creativity. Their cheese adventure has proven to be one full of challenges, many of which they hadn’t predicted, as Pam explains.
“When Francis first suggested we make cheese we thought six months down the line we’d be in production, but it was crazy to have assumed that. There is so much you have to learn, and the first time you make cheese there are lots of problems you have to solve, and faults you’ve got to refine. And that takes an awful amount of time.” The couple complement each other perfectly as a team. Pam grew up on a farm, and Francis dreamt of being a chef. This personal chemistry eventually saw them create a successful business running cheese and wine events for over 20 years. “Clients at these events asked us to provide a myriad of different accompaniments, and increasingly cheese,” said Pam. “So we did a lot of research into the cheeses we were providing, and it was on the way back from an event about five years ago that Francis posed the question: ‘Wouldn’t it be a natural progression that we start making our own cheese?’ – and I rather foolishly and naively said yes!” The Gimbletts both burst into laughter, which I sense was broadly congratulatory but perhaps tinged a little with the harsh reality of what this has involved. “We did most of our research in France where we met with cheesemakers, making lots of friends along the way,” said

FOR THE LOVE OF CHEESE the fields to be milked as and when they want, with milking done by robotic milking machines which for the cows’ welfare is very beneficial.” I was now totally intrigued, and also becoming a tad distracted by a yearning to start exploring Floyd’s undoubtedly very individual flavour. Francis suggested a tour of the Gimblett cheese dairy which is compact but very well-equipped and carefully controlled, both in terms of temperature and hygiene. “We collect our milk from the farm and heat it to about 38°. We add our starter cultures, which are lactic acid producing bacteria that provide flavour and also serve to make the cheese safe, and then the animal enzyme rennet which coagulates the milk into curd and adds flavour too.” Francis was guiding me around the dairy as he spoke, and we had paused by a collection of circular moulds. “We cut the curd into little cubes and stir to dispel the whey, with around a litre of milk producing one cheese. This is quite a high ratio compared to say a dry cheese like Cheddar as we retain a lot of moisture to give the gooeyness we need for our cheese. This is drained into these moulds to create a 200g cheese.” Francis moved towards the first of two temperaturecontrolled rooms. “These are then kept for three or four days at around 18° which kickstarts the bacteria. Then we drop the temperature to 11° for about three weeks, washing the cheese in a solution of brine and diluted vodka. This discourages unwanted mould and yeast, encouraging the bacteria we had added which turns the cheese a pinkorange colour. We leave it a further week before finally chilling it down to about 5° so it is ready for sale.” Previous page: Gimblett cheese; Pam and Francis Gimblett. From top: one of the Jersey cows (Kimberley Archer); the cheese in production.
Francis. “We took little bits and pieces of their knowledge to gain an understanding of the nuts and bolts, and it was all about flavour really. We wanted to create something of our own, a cheese that is very complex in flavour, similar to a fine wine which gives a range of persistent and changing flavours.” Milk of course is the core ingredient of cheese, and my question as to where they source their supplies was fascinating in itself. “Our milk comes from Pierrepont Farm in Frensham,” explained Pam. “Mike and Bev Clear are tenants of the farm’s owners, Countryside Restoration Trust, and their ethos is focused on the welfare of their herd of around 130 Jersey cows, all of which they know by name. The cows come in from August 2018
I then posed an impossible question, asking them to describe Floyd’s flavour. This was really a poorly disguised hint for a taste but I failed miserably by default. At the time of my visit the dairy was closed in readiness for some building work and the installation of new equipment, so I will have to wait until they are shortly back in production! But based on the tantalising way both Pam and Francis had attempted to convey its flavour exactly as you would taste it - which included wild-mushroomy, gamy, and even at times chocolatey – I will be eagerly joining you in the queues at the outlets where it is on sale. 60 PLACES TO SEE IN THE SURREY HILLS
Chilworth Gunpowder Works The Surrey Hills isn’t the first place that you’d associate with heavy industry, but in the village of Chilworth, near Guildford, are the ruins of an industry that dominated the area for almost 300 years – the manufacturing of gunpowder. The fast flowing Tillingbourne river attracted industry to Chilworth, as the river could be utilised to power water mills. In the 16th Century, the Evelyn family set up a gunpowder works in the area after being awarded the royal monopoly on gunpowder manufacture. In 1626, the East India Company also established a gunpowder mill on the banks of the Tillingbourne, the gunpowder works it opened at Chilworth in 1626 was used to supply its forces abroad. There’s a great 2km heritage walk of the Gunpowder Mills with downloadable leaflet available from the website; www.surreyhills.org/surrey-hills-60/chilworth-gunpowder-works/
Reigate Heath Windmill Reigate Heath Windmill is a grade II listed post mill which has been restored and is used as a chapel. It is thought to be the only windmill in the world which is a consecrated church. The windmill was built c.1765, and was last worked by wind in April 1862. In 1962, the mill was purchased by Reigate Borough Council and the mill was restored, with new sails fitted. A church service was held on 18 October 1964, and since May 1965 a service has been held on the third Sunday of each month during the summer. You can take in the Mill by doing a 4 mile walk across Reigate Heath; www.surreyhills.org/surrey-hills-60/reigate-heath-windmill/
The Atlantic Wall D-Day training sites were created in Britain in order to practise for Operation Overlord, the invasion of Northern France in 1944. In 1943, in an area of Hankley Common known as the Lion’s Mouth, Canadian troops constructed a replica of a section of the Atlantic Wall. It is constructed from reinforced concrete and was used as a training aid to develop and practise techniques to breach the defences of the French coast prior to the D-Day landings. The wall is about 100 m (330 ft) long, 3 m (9.8 ft) high by 3.5 m (11 ft) wide. It is divided into two sections between which there were originally steel gates. Nearby are other obstacles such as dragon’s teeth, reinforced concrete blocks and lengths of railway track set in concrete and with wire entanglements. Many of the relics show signs of live weapons training and the main wall has two breaches caused by demolition devices. You can discover the Atlantic Wall on a 5 mile walk; www.surreyhills.org/surrey-hills-60/atlantic-wall/

The Wilberforce Memorial On 19 July 1873 Samuel Wilberforce, ‘Soapy Sam’ the Bishop of Winchester, had a tragic accident on the Abinger Roughs. His family erected a granite memorial on the spot where he fell, and you can see this Grade II listed monument near Leasers Barn. The Roughs was formerly part of the Abinger Hall Estate. In the late 19th century the land was planted with specimen trees, plantations and rhododendrons to form open glades with interlinking paths; a wilderness garden. It was created by Thomas Henry Farrer of Abinger Hall, and you can still see some of the original garden today. There’s also a great 3 mile walk around Abinger Roughs which takes in the memorial; www.surreyhills.org/surrey-hills-60/the-wilberforce-memorial/
Wanborough Great Barn Wanborough Great Barn is the oldest and most important wooden building in Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. Built in 1388 by the Cistercian monks of Waverley Abbey and used for storing and processing crops and fleeces. It is an aisled barn, made from massive oak timbers, with large doors on both long sides to permit entry and exit by carts. Constructed from some of the many oak trees that covered much of Surrey in the middle-ages, Wanborough Great Barn was part of a ‘grange’ – a farm supplying the abbey’s needs. PETS and FAMILIES Zoe Blake looks at how pets can be good for the whole family THE UK is known for being a nation of animal lovers and so it is not surprising that a 2015 Pet Population Report estimated almost half of UK households own a pet, giving a total of approximately 58 million pets. I feel that owning a pet (or in my case three cats and one dog) will enable my son to grow up having learnt a whole variety of skills which he can hopefully translate to other areas of his life. I see a pet bringing behaviour improvements, emotional benefits and, most importantly, health advantages. I recently stumbled across a report resulting from a survey and studies run by Pets at Home in 2015 which confirms my beliefs. Children are being given the opportunity to care for pets on a daily basis. At this young age, they are taught what a responsibility it is and so understand what work and commitment is involved in owning a pet. Their relationships towards others should improve as they learn about compassion, which could also help reduce self -focus. Pets can become a comfort tool where the children find they can open-up if they are upset, as their pets won’t laugh at them or tease them. They provide a great way to get our children learning about nature, getting fresh air and exercise, which can work wonders for a child’s nights sleep (I can vouch for this first hand). It will also get more sedentary members of the household out and about. The survey felt that people who were dog

owners were deemed friendlier and more sociable than non-dog owners. So if you decided to get a dog to enjoy some nice quiet walks alone, you may need to think again! Pets have also been known to have benefits if a child is finding it hard to concentrate or are anxious about performing a certain task. The study showed that when a dog was placed in a classroom of children, they were able to perform tasks better and faster making fewer mistakes. It has also been studied and documented that exposure to dogs in the first years of life can mean a lower incidence of hay fever and asthma for our children. So owning a pet has surely got to mean a happy, healthier family? It is obviously important if

How much should your children inherit? Bruce Forsyth’s Will: Bruce Forsyth died on 18th August 2017. In 2015 he commented” I think your inheritance should go to your children...of course you owe your country a lot ...but I think inheritance tax can be a bit over the top.” Most of us think the same. Sir Bruce left an £ 11.7 million estate. He left assets to a trust for his grandchildren and the rest of his estate to his wife and thereafter to his six children. Each of us has a Standard Nil Rate Band of £325,000 and a Residence Nil Rate Band of £125,000 (rising to £175,000 in the year 2020).
Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) Are not only for the elderly. We are all at risk from illness or accident particularly those who travel or do risky sports. An LPA for financial matters permits your chosen attorneys to manage your affairs. An LPA for health matters permits your attorneys to speak for you if you are too ill to make decisions or speak for yourself. Thus matters such as medical treatment and even ‘Care’ are decided by those who are close to you.
A legally married spouse or registered civil partner does not pay Inheritance tax (IHT).
If we are unable to act for ourselves and there is no LPA even a joint bank account is frozen and all our financial matters grind to a halt.
Thus marriage and Registered Civil partnership is the main tool in tax planning.
A policy of ‘wait and see’ can be disastrous. You can only sign when you have full capacity.
We should be careful to use both allowances:
✓ We quote our fixed fees up front ✓ We meet with you in informal surroundings and spend a lot of time making sure we get everything right and you are happy ✓ We believe in plain English ✓ We advise on the most tax effective solutions ✓ Our clients tell us that the experience has been a pleasant one and they are extremely glad that they have the necessary documents in place. ✓ We will check your Will for you.
If assets are given outright to the surviving spouse they can be affected by the future remarriage of that spouse or by that spouse’s Care Fees. However a Trust in the Will can secure the full spouse exemption and all the benefits of the Nil Rate Bands and safeguard your estate ensuring that the right people benefit.

dedication and they should definitely been seen as a lifelong commitment, not just a phase. It is important to remember that an adult should always be supervising children when they are around their pets. You must also communicate and teach children the ‘5 welfare needs’.
So what pet would be best? This one is always a hard decision to make and has to be a discussion that is made with the whole family. Who will be responsible for the main care of the animal and what is your main reasoning for adding another family member? Think about the individual types of animals and what care and attention they require. Visit your local pet shops and rescue centres and have a look at the different options you have. Speak to friends and family who have pets and see how they feel.
The need for:
The obvious choices would be cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters. However other pets like tortoises, snakes, lizards and hedgehogs are starting to become popular. How much interaction would the family like to have with the pet and are they going to be rewarded with attention? For example, there are no guarantees that a cat will become a lap cat if that’s what you were wanting. A hamster’s waking hours will often be when the family is asleep and a nice cuddly rabbit may not like to be handled unless it has been done correctly from a young age. Animals all require attention and

He will also come with me when they go to the vets which I feel is vital in him understanding the need to treat a sick or injured animal, to keep them healthy and give them the best life we can. Our pets give us unconditional love and it is important that we provide them with a safe and healthy life. If you feel that your family can do this, then there are many great reasons to do so. Howard Shelley has a world reputation as an accomplished pianist and conductor, often at the same time, with over 150 CDs to his name. Having played and conducted a string of Mozart and Beethoven works for Grayshott Concerts, organisers have invited him back on Friday 21st September 2018 to perform a popular programme of works by Schubert, Dvorak – and Shostakovitch. Both Schubert’s ‘Unfinished Symphony’ and Dvorak’s lively ‘8th Symphony’ are well known to audiences – but Shostakovitch’s ‘2nd Piano Concerto’ has been rather less well-known – until recent times. Over the last 10 years or so, this beautifully lyrical and melancholy work has been shooting up the popularity polls thanks to the many requests the work receives on Classic FM. In 2017, the work reached No.17 in Classic FM’s ‘Hall of Fame’. The composer himself, however, writing in 1957, the year of composition, expressed the opinion, with tongue-in-cheek, that the work was “of little artistic
merit”. Clearly, the public thinks otherwise. ’With Shostakovitch’s reputation as a somewhat ‘noisy’ composer, packing his works with percussion, the 2nd Piano Concerto is unexpectedly sublime and instantly appealing. Its languorous melodies linger in the memory long after the performance. So audiences can expect a rewarding experience for a September evening in Grayshott’s ‘acoustic masterpiece’ of St Luke’s Church in the heart of the village. Howard Shelley, Grayshott Concerts’ Associate Artist, will perform the Concerto and conduct the music group’s Orchestra-in-Residence, the renowned London Mozart Players. Early booking is recommended as every Grayshott Concert since 2004 has sold out in advance. Tickets and more information are available on the website at www.grayshottconcerts.co.uk.

650g pork steaks, cut into 2.5cm cubes (leg or shoulder), 12 shallots, peeled and cut in half, 3 tbsp jerk rub, 3 tbsp olive oil. For the Salsa: ½ fresh pineapple, chopped into 1cm cubes, 3 shallots, finely chopped, a handful of coriander leaves, roughly chopped, juice & zest of 1 lime, 3 red chillis, deseeded and chopped. Plus 8 wooden kebab skewers, soaked in water for an hour to prevent burning. Serves 4.
Method:
1. Make a paste with the jerk rub by mixing it with the olive oil. Add the jerk paste to the cubed pork and shallots and mix thoroughly. Leave to marinate for a minimum of half an hour – an hour would be better if you have time. 2. Whilst the pork and shallots are marinating make the pineapple salsa by combining all the ingredients in a bowl. Leave to rest at room temperature to allow the flavours to develop. 3. When the marinating is finished, thread the shallots and pork alternately onto the skewers. Cook the skewers on a BBQ or grill pan on a high heat for a couple of minutes on each side until they are nicely coloured. Move to a cooler part of the BBQ or turn the heat on the grill down and cook for further 10-15 minutes, turning regularly until the pork is cooked and the shallots are tender. 4. Serve with the pineapple salsa.

Plant Heritage • GARDENING
With Beth Otway
PLANT HERITAGE are a plant conservation charity, based in Guildford, that encourage horticulturists, botanists, and gardeners to grow, propagate, share, and conserve a wide range of plants to protect and safeguard the variety of plants we have available to grow and enjoy. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary, so to mark the occasion they asked garden designer Jackie Currie to create an exhibit for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018, to publicise the value of Plant Heritage’s work. Plant Heritage are a self-funding charitable organisation with limited resources, but thanks to the efforts of their staff and trustees, as well as the dedication of the growers of over 600 National Collection holders across the country, the actual value of this charity’s work is priceless. It’s often assumed that a plant, once it’s released for sale, is held in vast numbers and will always be available for us to purchase forever more, but this is seldom the case. Plant stocks are often lower than you might expect; many plants that are popular one minute can fall from favour the next, so unless nurseries and gardeners grow, propagate, and share

plants, there is no guarantee that we will be able to find a particular plant in the future. Plants are valuable to us in so many ways. They may produce compounds which are essential components in medical treatments, a plant may produce delicious fruit or vegetables, or a plant might be a valuable garden plant, which flowers earlier or later, or flowers for longer. A plant might be special as it copes when grown in a particular soil type, or a plant might be valued for its ability to survive extended periods of cold, heat, drought or wet weather. National Collection holders are passionate growers of a particular group of plants. These range from National Collections set up to honour a particular plant breeder, for example Sarah Cook’s National Collection of Irises introduced by Sir Cedric Morris, or National Collections set up to safeguard plants from a particular location, such as Linda Heywood’s National Collection of Echium Species and Cultivars from Macaronesian Islands. PLANT HERITAGE many collections of fascinating plants, like Nigel Hewitt-Cooper, of Hewitt-Cooper Carnivorous Plants’ National Collection of Drosera. Jackie Currie holds a National Collection of Allium Species, Cultivars, and Hybrids, and Julian Reed holds a National Collection of Hardy Polypodium Cultivars, while Jonathan Hogarth holds a National Collection of Small and Miniature Hostas. Jackie Currie, as a National Collection holder as well as a garden designer, was the perfect choice to design and build the Plant Heritage exhibit for the horticultural calendar’s most prestigious event, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Having said this, Jackie had quite a challenge before her. The RHS contacted Plant Heritage just five weeks before the Chelsea Flower Show was due to open when an exhibitor pulled out due to the effects of the unseasonable cold weather this spring. Jackie had just over a month to come up with a design, source the plants, and create an exhibit! She had to fit in her full-time day job as well as organising the display, so had a very busy time. Thankfully she was ably assisted by Plant Heritage’s Show Manager, Gill Groombridge. Plant Heritage’s Chelsea exhibit was entitled ‘The Heart of Plant Heritage’, as the National Plant Collections are at the heart of Plant Heritage’s conservation work. The exhibit featured plants from 25 different National Collections, including roses borrowed from Mottisfont Abbey’s National Collection of pre-1900 Shrub Roses. Mottisfont Abbey’s National Collection of Roses was established by Graham Stuart Thomas in the 1970s, and this magnificent rose collection is home to many old and rare varieties of rose. Without the dedication of the renowned plantsman Graham Stuart Thomas, who planted the roses, and the support of Plant Heritage and the National Trust, who maintain the collection, these roses may otherwise have become extinct and lost to us forever. Plant Heritage’s Chelsea exhibit featured an Acer from the National Collection at Westonbirt Arboretum, lavender from Downderry Nursery’s National Collection of Lavender, as well as Alliums from Jackie Currie’s National Collection of Alliums.

Chidham Circular Summer is a lovely time to visit the seaside, as long as you are away from the crowds. This is a 5 mile circular walk with some of the best panoramic views of the harbour at Chichester. There is always something to watch on the water, whether it is groups of young people learning to sail or kayak, or birds diving for fish. This walk is taken with permission from Chichester Harbour Conservancy.
• THE WALK 1. Take the first path on the left out of the car park. Going up a few steps you can see Bosham Church in the distance (position A on the map). Turn to the right and then left along the field edge, heading towards the shoreline. 2. At the shoreline path, turn right and keep going. Just before you reach the big accommodation boat for Christian Youth Enterprises (B) , the path turns inland. Carefully follow the footpath signs around the buildings and activity fields of the two sailing centres. You will shortly come onto a hard surfaced path through a dinghy park. 3. The path then turns left towards the shoreline. This section is suitable for wheelchairs. It was opened in 1988 on land kindly donated by Martin Beale, whose family still live at Cobnor House. 4. Keep on the path, there are a number of benches along this route for a break and to enjoy the view. The path eventually leads down a few steps to the shoreline. Turn right along the
shore. Once you have passed the shoreline oaks, climb back up onto the bank. Take the footpath that heads inland to the right of the fence (C) . 5. When the path reaches the shoreline, turn right and look out for the footpath sign to the right (D) . The path goes down a few steps and turns back on itself. Turn left at the field edge to walk inland across fields. At the road, turn right. You will shortly come to some houses and then the Old House at Home pub. 6. Past the pub the road bears to the left. Take time to visit the church and look out for their collection of historical ‘teasel people’. Just before the church there is a footpath on the right (E). Keep on this wide grassy path as it wiggles around fields. 7. On the straight section with electricity poles look out for the small unsigned path on the left leading back to the road. Turn right to return to the car park. St Marys Church, Chidham (Bob Parkes)

TIDES Please note some paths are flooded at high tide. If you have misjudged the times, you usually only have to wait a short while before the path is clear enough to use. Tide times can be found at www. conservancy.co.uk or from the Harbour Office; please note these are only a prediction and factors such as low pressure can make the tide higher than expected. The shoreline section to the southwest floods when the tide is 4.5m or higher. Aim to reach it two hours before or after high tide.

Les Amitiés Françaises • PROFILE Founded in 1989, on the initiative of a Belgian married to an Englishman, Les Amitiés Françaises now has around 100 members with an interest in all things French. Les Amitiés organises a monthly programme of evening talks in French, held at the Baptist Church hall in Godalming. French art is always a popular topic, as are talks giving an insight into French history, but it is not all high culture. Members of Les Amitiés have also had the opportunity to learn more, for example, about the very different approach to ethnic minorities across the Channel and about the rise to power of President Macron. France – our nearest neighbour. Two nations with a shared history, but often eyeing one another with a degree of suspicion and mutual incomprehension. A relationship not helped by what seems to be a particular difficulty in mastering each other’s language, especially the spoken word. For almost 30 years, though, a local society, with the support of the Alliance Française de Londres, has been doing what it can to break down some of these barriers.

Its members are a mixture of native English and native French speakers who have a chance to chat in French over tea or coffee before each meeting. For keen readers of French literature, there is a very active book group, which reads seven books each year and discusses them in French over tea and cakes. Of course, no society with a focus on France can ignore the French love of food and drink. So each year Les Amitiés celebrates the Fête des Rois (Epiphany) with a dinner including the traditional galette des rois, with the person finding the hidden fève (lucky charm) being crowned king or queen. And each July, Bastille Day is celebrated with a festive evening which, given good weather, continues under the stars. In the new season, there will be talks on aspects of French history from Louis XIV through the French Revolution to the Occupation, on the neoimpressionist painters, on those regions of France so touched by war – from Agincourt to Dunkirk – Picardy and Flanders, and on the ‘maisons closes’ set up under Napoleon in 1804. The season kicks off at 7.30pm on Thursday 20th September with a talk on the 18th century philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who had a great influence in his day, and spent some time in England, but who is little more than a name to most people today. Les Amitiés is always welcoming new members and visitors to its meetings, so if you have a reasonable knowledge of French and an interest in French lifestyle and culture, why not give it a try? HIDDEN SURREY THE COMMUNITY Foundation model is a global, philanthropic movement operating in over 1,800 communities worldwide. In the UK, there are 46 Community Foundations. At the heart of the concept is the simple theme of ‘local giving for local need’. Laura Thurlow, Chief Executive at the Community Foundation for Surrey, explains how the foundation is supporting many ‘hidden’ charities helping meet local needs that exist right on your doorstep. When responding with the name of the organisation I am so delighted to work for, it is not uncommon to be greeted with a dazed expression. There are many local people still unaware of The Community Foundation for Surrey, despite the vital work we do in enabling local philanthropy and supporting hundreds of Surrey based charities and groups each year. Perhaps this is because Surrey is predominantly thought to be one of the most affluent counties in the UK. But while parts of our county are rated as the best places to live, sadly our research, titled ‘Surrey Uncovered’, has revealed the very real needs that surround us. Did you know that Surrey has one of the highest levels of domestic abuse? Or that, in some areas, income deprivation is affecting more than 30% of children? It is these needs which motivate us to raise awareness of the importance of philanthropy and encourage local people to get involved.
Charities Supported Near You A Place to Be is a youth group which supports young people aged 11-14 in Haslemere. The organisation offers one-to-one support to disadvantaged young people and those with learning difficulties, as well as their open youth club sessions which include sports, cooking and other positive activities. Experienced youth workers are on hand to ensure that young people are supported and are able to talk about any problems they may be facing. Haslemere Music Society provides a place for the people of Haslemere to meet regularly and practice music. Participation in the choir, orchestra, and in an audience, enhances the social life of both performers and audience members. Both the concerts and rehearsals provide participants with the possibility of socialising and making friends, which is especially useful for the socially isolated, elderly or infirm. If you are from a community group in Haslemere, our Haslemere Challice Fund awards grants to local projects making a difference in this community. Please contact us to find out more. FIND OUT MORE For more informatiuon, email: info@cfsurrey.org.uk, phone 01483 478092 or visit the website at www.cfsurrey.org.uk.
We work with donors who want to give back to their communities and voluntary groups providing vital services for local people and disadvantaged individuals. Companies, individuals, families and trusts can establish a fund with us, and we will work closely with them to help direct their giving to the causes and themes they care about in Surrey. Last year, we awarded £1.2 million in grants to charities and groups working hard to better Surrey, that sadly often go unnoticed, despite making a significant impact within the local community. It is these ‘hidden’ charities making the biggest difference that we are so proud to support. We are incredibly proud to have generated £22m across Surrey since our inception in 2005 and we are confident that, by inspiring more philanthropic individuals to become involved, it will not be long before we generate even more for our communities. Whether you’re a local group looking for funding, or someone wanting to support the local community, we would love to hear from you, so please do get in touch! August 2018

Your colourful creation could end up on display at London’s Natural History Museum! The Global Canvas Children’s Art Competition was set up in 2004 to encourage young people to express their concern for the environment through art. The 2019 theme is ‘Habitats of the World’. Each year they look for imaginative group entries from children aged 16 years and under, using creative media including art, sculpture, textiles, collage etc. to present a miniexhibition reflecting the competition theme. They encourage an emphasis on wildlife, but all of earth’s fauna and flora may be represented in as creative a way as possible. Entry to the competition is FREE and the closing date for entries is 31st January 2019 – so get painting, drawing, sculpting, printing, knitting, sewing and collaging! Why should you install a Resin Drive? That’s simple; our product naturally drains water through it which means no puddles. Also with a slip resistant surface it provides better traction for tyres and gives more grip for when you walk on it, making your drive a safe place to be!
