It was a brilliant production and extremely moving which suggests that the Life of Christ will be very special. Based on a true story, it’s about a 5 year-old Indian boy who gets trapped on a decommissioned train, taking him over 1500 miles away from his home and family. Petworth Festival Takes place from 12th-29 July 2017
To many people the word ‘festival’ has become synonymous with muddy fields, unsanitary toilets and loud, loud music. And there’s no doubt that the likes of Glastonbury, Latitude, Love Supreme and all the rest have created for themselves a very genuine niche in the summer calendar. Live music is a great thing and the shared experience you get at a large scale event is unquestionably something that should be on anyone’s bucket list. But festivals are far from the preserve of the big blockbuster. For centuries mankind has been drawn to celebrate and in the UK we have for many years been blessed by a more understated form of ‘festivalling’, or that of the ‘arts festival’. But in case the term ‘arts festival’ sounds a little dry or austere, let’s put things straight. The word ‘art’ covers an enormously wide creative terrain, and anyone involved in festivalling will immediately tell you that the celebratory part of the word festival – or fiesta! – is a central part of what they attempt to do. Stewart Collins is the Artistic Director of one of the jewels in West Sussex’s crown where the arts festival is concerned, Petworth Festival. As increasing numbers across the county already appreciate, Petworth Festival has been growing and growing in recent years, and Stewart is in no doubt as to the reasons why: “There are several key ingredients to any festival, whether it be the behemoth rock block busters, or the more intimate versions that exist across the county, and primary amongst these is place. A festival without a memorable, beautiful or contained location simply won’t have either an identity or a soul”. And Petworth is nothing if not one of the area’s most attractive and elegantly contained towns, nestling as it
does amongst the South Downs; partly dominated by the great Petworth House, but also an intimate town with an international reputation as a centre in the antiques world. But it also has a festival, and a festival can often be an invisible glue that helps pull a community together. Stewart Collins again: “Somehow my predecessors at the Petworth Festival managed to create a momentum and an affection for an event that is not only hugely valued in the area, but which has also gained a national reputation amongst both audiences and performers. It is quite simply a place where great events happen and where the appreciation is on a level you don’t always get in larger communities”. So what is it that makes the Petworth Festival an event that clearly punches above its weight? “Although there can never be anything as restrictive as a formula, there will always be a number of key ingredients to our festival” says Stewart. “Firstly we should show off the town and the locale; secondly we should do our darnedest to ensure that we put on events that will appeal to many audiences and many differing tastes; thirdly we should do everything we can to provide opportunities for young people to experience music and performance;

and also having my brain and emotions taxed and turned by the skills of the playwright. Now to be working week in and week out with all of these wonderful people really brings a spring to one’s step on a daily basis.”

Stewart’s own background is hugely eclectic having been a singer, actor and writer before moving backstage. “From my earliest days I was inspired by great classical music, I loved having my funny bone tickled by the wit and wisdom of our great comedians,
So who will be bringing a spring to everyone’s steps in Petworth this coming summer? The cornerstone of the Petworth Festival has always been great performances of classical music, and this year is no exception as the festival welcomes the hugely charismatic operatic baritone Roderick Williams, the man who was such a hit at a recent Last Night of the BBC Proms; and he is just one of many performers who have graced the Royal Albert Hall stage. Former BBC Young Musician of the Year Natalie Clein plays at the festival this year, as does former child prodigy violinist Chloë Hanslip, not to mention one of classical music’s fastest rising stars, harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, and Lithuanian pin-up-classical-accordionist Martynas Levickis. But the range of performers and performances stretches much wider. Jazz has long played a role at the festival, and the 2017 jazz programme is headed up by top chanteuse Claire Martin, London’s Savoy Hotel residents Alex Mendham and his orchestra, and jazz musician, food writer and BBC radio regular, Jay Rayner with his Quartet. Comedy plays a greater role than ever with a second Comedy at The Stables night scheduled to feature four acts including the Rainer Hersch Orkestra and stand-up

comedian extraordinaire Hal Cruttenden, with Angus Deayton due to feature alongside his Radio Active team members at the festival’s annual visit to Midhurst’s Rother College theatre. World music features in two very special events and there are activities aimed at the younger and family audience and community participants. The festival returns to beautiful Bignor Park for the annual family picnic theatre event, whilst the Leconfield Hall hosts other shows tailor-made for the younger audience. The Silent Pool Distillery Phil Kemp visits an artisan gin distillery, situated locally in the beautiful Surrey Hills The beautiful Surrey Hills offer stunning countryside and boast a host of hidden surprises, including the magical Silent Pool, where its eerie stillness embraces local legends of ghostly intrigue. Rated in the top ten of Best Hidden Gems by Visit Surrey, the pool is fed by underground chalk springs that in their turn have provided a perfect location for an innovative and trendsetting local artisan distillery that draws water from the springs for their spirit production. The Silent Pool Distillery, located in Albury near Guildford, was founded only four years ago but has quickly enthralled not only local gin and vodka lovers but those all across Britain, Europe and as far away as Japan, the USA and Peru. 14
Their signature Silent Pool Gin, with its distinctive bottle design embracing the mythology and aqua-green waters of the adjacent pool and entwining these with the botanicals that are used to create the distinctive profile of the gin, has provided the cornerstone on which to build a truly inspiring distillery business. I met up with Ian McCulloch, founding partner, who provided a walk-through of the distillery and the full story behind the success of the Silent Pool Distillery. “I go to Scotland a lot and if the weather is really bad we inevitably end up in a distillery,” said Ian. “I have looked at the way the Scots were marketing their whisky. bottle of malt around you’ll see words like ‘you can taste the salty mist as it drifts in at the dawn over the heather’ providing a narrative. You can virtually see and smell Scotland, the sky, the water and the rocks before you’ve even drunk their whisky. There’s a lot of theatre around it bringing it to life. And I wondered if we could do the same in the North Downs.” We walked across the courtyard, which provides a breathing space between the distillery, its bottling plant and the administration office which, although somewhat cramped, radiates an infectious energy from the team working there. “As a drinker, I’ve always enjoyed gin. It’s one of those products you can do something adventurous with. We’ve likened it to painting with colours, or with flavours. If vantagepointmag.co.uk
you think of flavours as paint, and somebody gave you a white canvas and a load of colours, you can paint a million different pictures. Well it’s the same with flavours.” The impressive copper pot still, with its almost H G Wells-inspired rectifying column towering 10ft above provided surreal reflections in the polished metal of the distilling team working busily behind us as we talked. The still was hand-built in Germany and the imposing stainless steel holding tanks standing alongside was sourced from Slovenia to hold both the spirit used in the distilling process and the crystalclear water pumped from the Silent Pool and filtered. “The problem with whisky is you make it, store it in wooden barrels and then look at it for five or ten years. With gin it’s ten days end to end. And if you want to make floral gin you can make floral gin. If you want to make juniper-rich gin you can make juniper-rich gin. Or summer gin, or a winter gin. You can do what you like, as long as it’s juniper-led, which by law gin has to be. So you’ve got a lot more scope creatively, and that’s what we’ve done.” Earlier Ian had opened a large Perspex box which contained the all-important botanicals that give their gin its highly distinctive flavour. Each gin distillation uses a combination of these ingredients from 24 carefully-selected botanicals that the master distiller, Cory Mason, uses in his recipes. These included cardamom, coriander, cubeb, orris and juniper which are macerated in the base spirit for 24 hours before being added to the 250-litre copper pot still which extracts the botanical oils. The more delicate ingredients including elderflower and kaffir lime leaves are macerated separately and added later. The June 2017

last of the botanicals, which include coriander, lavender and pear are added to the gin basket, which hangs inside the still so that the vapour rising up the rectification column picks up the extra flavours. All in all, a mouth-watering fusion of diverse flavours which undoubtedly is why Silent Pool Gin has stolen the limelight and is quickly building a world-wide reputation. “The whole distillation process takes about three hours, which delivers enough spirit for 380 bottles of gin,” explained Ian. “However, all this takes power to provide the steam for the still. Ian led the way to a door behind the copper still, down some metal stairs into an open-sided back room where we stood by a stack of split logs and a large ancient-looking metal boiler. “The distillation needs heat. We originally looked at modern biomass boilers and the quote for a steam generating one was a crazy £120,000. So I started to investigate heritage steam, and talking to the Bluebell Railway and the boys in Alton on the Watercress Line we found a chap in Canterbury who trades in reclaimed boilers. This old boiler was one-tenth of the cost, is really simple to run and maintain, you just need a spanner! We are 15

supplied with wood by the Albury Estate, which is felled locally and chopped just over the road. In fuel miles that’s around half a fuel mile. It works fine.” As we clambered back up the metal stairway into the distillation room Ian added: “We attach a whistle to the boiler occasionally just for the visitors who come along to our distillery tours. It’s a three-chime whistle so that everybody in the valley knows we are distilling. After all it’s the steam that drives the distilling process.” Now standing alongside the large stainless steel holding tanks, with each labelled according to which part of the process they are being used for, Ian opens the steel cap on a pipe protruding at an angle from one of the tanks. “Take a smell. That’s high-proof Silent Pool Gin in there, around 85% strength. We use these tanks to cut the spirit down to 43% bottling strength by mixing with the filtered spring water taken from the Silent Pool. It’s a chalk spring and we take all the minerals out of the water when we filter it. Everything is done on site, nothing leaves the site – unless it’s in a bottle. Water flowing from the spring goes from the Silent Pool into Sherbourne pond. From there it goes into the Tillingbourne, the Tillingbourne into the Wey, and finally the Wey into the Thames.” 16
We walk through the packing area and briefly watch the small but industrious bottling team handfill the distinctive blue Silent Pool Gin bottles, cap and sticker them with the necessary barcode and customs labels, and pack these into cartons ready for shipping out to customers eagerly awaiting the next shipment of one of their favourite gins. Pausing briefly by the courtyard table groaning under the weight of the distillery’s wide range of products - which include several different flavoured gins, their popular Wry Vodka, a strawberry and gin liquer that apparently mixes well with Prosecco, and several flavoured sprays and cordials – Ian continues to emphasise their preference for sourcing locally.

“Our strawberries come from Tuesley Farm and the blackberries are local. The yeast for the vodka from a supplier in Godalming. The charcoal we use for filtering the vodka is from John Sinclair with the hornbeam logs sourced and burned locally. Juniper has been grown on the North Downs for thousands of years.”
“We want to get back into whisky so the new still is a ‘stripping still’ which is ideal. We had started producing whisky but when Silent Pool Gin took off we had to concentrate on that. We have got an innovative product plan, which I’m not going to tell you. Nobody has done it yet and we think it will be a world beater. For whisky you in effect need beer which you distil, and one or two of the local brewers are quite interested in that. There’ll also be quite a bit of grain waste so we’re thinking of distillery grain-fed pork from pigs brought up on the side of the hill here.”
The distillery is located on Albury Estate, land owned by the Duke of Northumberland, and is set in beautiful countryside and farmland. To the rear of the existing distillery is a large agricultural building which at the time of my visit had building workers pouring a new concrete floor.
The Silent Pool Distillery runs 90-minute ‘deep dive’ gin tours which include a tasting of their full range at the end. From my brief visit there I came away impressed and inspired by their creativity, originality, and enthusiasm – but as I was working I didn’t touch a drop. But make sure you do. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Haslemere Arts and Crafts Weekend Friday 7th to Sunday 9th July 2017 at Haslemere Museum The Arts and Crafts Movement was one of the most influential international artistic movements of modern times. Inspired by the work and writings of John Ruskin and William Morris, it grew out of a concern for the effects of industrialisation on society and traditional skills in the late 1800s. The movement influenced many areas of the cultural landscape including architecture, garden design, clothing and home furnishings. Next month, Haslemere will play host to an Arts and Crafts weekend to celebrate the town’s rich Arts and Crafts heritage. Organised by Haslemere Museum and supported by Haslemere Events and the Visitor Information Centre, the weekend of special events promises a fascinating insight into the Arts and Crafts Movement. In Haslemere, a thriving centre for a community of artists and craftspeople inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement formed the Peasant Arts Society which flourished until the early 1930s. Determined to revive lost country crafts and rejecting the industrial economy with its mass production of goods, they set up craft workshops and weaving houses in the town teaching local girls to weave. Many different types of crafts were produced from striking handwoven textiles to printed cards, some of which survive in the collection at Haslemere Museum. Members of the movement, including Godfrey Blount and Joseph King collected beautifully decorated household objects and intricately embroidered textiles from all over Europe and brought them back to Haslemere displaying them in their own 20
20 years, a series of lectures by expert speakers including garden historian Dr Sarah Rutherford author of the Arts and Crafts Garden, Professor Neil Jackson from the School of Architecture at the University of Liverpool in London and Donna Steele, Curator of Ditchling Museum. There will also be a trail around the Arts and Crafts industry buildings and houses of Haslemere, a guided garden tour of Gertrude Jekyll’s iconic woodland garden at Munstead Wood and dinner by candlelight at St Christopher’s Church, a stunning example of an Arts and Crafts building. Joining them in this pursuit of collecting was Gerald Davies, a master at Charterhouse School in Godalming and his collection was later purchased by the Peasant Arts Society. The craft workshops and weaving houses have long since disappeared from Haslemere but the history of this inspiring movement is still visible today in the road names and buildings, together with a lasting legacy in the European Peasant Arts Collection at the museum. Hair we go again! It all started with ‘big ears’, remembers fashion stylist, Kirstie Smillie.
Through my early school age years, I have memories of trying to tuck my ears into my swimming cap, cycling with my head at forty-five degrees so my hair just covered them and allowing my curls to go all ‘poofy’ for maximum volume to keep my ears from peeking out! Eventually when I was fifteen my parents realised it was affecting my outlook and I had them pinned back (not as painful as it sounds). So at
last I could cut my hair and let the breeze rush through with out fear of embarrassment. It took me a few years to actually get a re style but from 80s frizz came my 90s page boy! Midlength mop with my homage to Joanna Lumley (so I was told) and then after my daughter’s birth, a reinvention of very short and later, bleached crop by time of the millennium celebrations.

Hair up for sport or hair down for coverage of that damned spot and dark circles, the extra mass just helps me on a less confident day. In my job as a fashion stylist, I love clothes and enjoy experimenting with vintage and high street

looks, although I am often happiest in jeans and stripy top. But my hair is just ‘there’, no statement. It’s only hair, it will grow back, so why the big debate? After researching on Pinterest, there are plenty of hair inspiration of ‘real’ women and those in the public eye. LOWDER MILL GARDENS
OPEN UNDER THE NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME - 3RD AND 4TH JUNE
One of the loveliest gardens in the region will once again open to the public under the National Garden Scheme, on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th June. The garden at picturesque Lowder Mill is not to be missed, as it is sure to delight and inspire, as it has done for the many visitors it has had over the last 13 years.
has grown so has the number of visitors. This will be the 13th consecutive year that the garden has been open, and over these years over £70,000 has been raised for the National Garden Scheme charities.
Lowder Mill is in an idyllic setting in a valley below Blackdown in Bell Vale Lane, Haslemere. It is now fifteen years since Anne and John Denning moved to Lowder Mill and since then they have transformed the garden, as well as renovating the seventeenth century mill. The listed house and former mill, both dating back over 300 years, are set in three acres of garden, of which almost one acre is the former mill pond, served by natural streams, and the many smaller ponds, streams and waterfalls that bisect the garden. The garden is now open for two days in the late spring each year, and as the garden’s reputation

At every turn the garden takes on a different aspect. There are many quirky features and it is full of fresh ideas, reflecting Anne’s passion and creativity. Raised vegetable beds are punctuated with runner beans growing over metal arches. The charming courtyard, full of soft colours and unusual planting, forms a link between the house and mill, and in early June the irises adjoining the lower pond will be in full bloom. But it is not only the garden that visitors come to see, as Lowder Mill’s afternoon tea has also gained quite a reputation, served on vintage china, overlooking the lake. There is a vast selection of homemade cakes and dainty sandwiches, making a visit a must. There is every chance that the resident kingfishers will be sighted, swooping over the water. The keen gardener will be tempted by the extensive plant stall, with most of the plants having been raised at Lowder Mill. A choir will entertain visitors on Sunday morning.

‘Do it Yourself’ Wills and LPAs Is your Will Tax Effective? ‘Do it Yourself’ Wills • These often end up in court and cause bitterness within the family. • The internet abounds with providers of ‘forms’ But forms do not give advice. • Forms do not ensure full tax allowances are claimed. • The new Residence Nil Rate Band allowance (RNRB) will not apply to many current Wills. • This RNRB is currently £ 100,000 per person. (rising to £ 175,000 per person) Family relations are complex and so is the law. • How can you provide for someone on means tested benefits? • Are you concerned about divorces in the family? • Have your children benefitted already unequally? • Will Care Fees erode your estate? • Can you exclude an undeserving relative? • Can a former spouse make a claim? The cost of a legally drawn up Will with full advice depends on the complexity. This cost is paid only once and the tax saving can run into thousands of pounds. ‘Cheapie’ Wills are written quickly and without proper advice. It is far better to do the job properly and ongoing legal costs and tax costs are avoided.

The Surrey Hills Trust Fund Caroline Price tells us about this trust fund, which safeguards the future of the Surrey Hills The Surrey Hills Trust Fund was established in 2014 to safeguard the Surrey Hills landscape for future generations. Designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1958, the Surrey Hills cover approximately a quarter of rural Surrey, and include the chalk slopes of the North Downs from Farnham in the west to Oxted in the east and extending south to the deeply wooded Greensand Hills which rise in Haslemere. Famous beauty spots including The Devil’s Punchbowl, Newlands Corner, Box Hill and Leith Hill are all situated within this special landscape. Established as a fund within the Community Foundation for Surrey (CFS), a registered charity, the Surrey Hills Trust Fund helps to conserve and maintain the fragile environment of the Surrey Hills by awarding grants to support a wide-range of local projects from landscape conservation to community enterprise schemes. Working with Young People A grant was awarded to the Leatherhead Youth Project who took ten students into the Surrey Hills for two days to undertake Forest School Survival Skills training which involved building shelters, camp fires and learning how to forage for food as well as outdoor team building. The aim of the project was to offer a unique outdoor learning experience to young people who may not always get the opportunity, helping them to engage with the Surrey Hills countryside and to boost confidence and learning. Inspiring Views Viewpoint clearance, access work and a series of 5 artistic benches along the Greensand Way were kindly funded through the Mittal Foundation. The Surrey Hills Trust Fund will maintain these artworks so that they can be enjoyed and experienced into the future. Conservation work at Quarry Hangers This is a Site of Special Scientific interest (SSSI) in the east of the Surrey Hills at Chaldon, near Caterham which benefited from a grant so that extensive targeted scrub clearance could be carried out to improve the landscape and restore the rare and precious chalk grassland, typical of the North Downs. Creative Landscapes in Health Project This recently awarded project will commission a writer, musician and artist to research and respond to areas of the Surrey Hills including Farnham Heath, Thursley, Moor Park, Leith Hill and Gatton Park. Each artist will create new work to share with the local community through a programme of creative health walks and workshops. Contact with green spaces and natural environments is proven to reduce symptoms of mental health problems and stress, and can improve mental wellbeing across all age groups. The walks and workshops also have social benefits and increase residents’ knowledge, connection and satisfaction with their local area. Small Blue Butterfly Project A grant has been awarded to Butterfly Conservation to help conserve the Small Blue Butterfly in Surrey. A ‘habitat 34
stepping-stones’ project will permanently link the Small Blue colonies on the North Downs between Guildford and Box Hill. This important work also involves partnership working with Surrey Wildlife Trust, Lower Mole Partnership, National Trust and Natural England. Wendy Varcoe, Executive Director of the Community Foundation for Surrey comments; “Through generous giving by local people, we are able to support wonderful projects that help preserve and enhance the stunning landscape. Wey & Arun Canal Trust The Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) began as a society in 1970, as a few enthusiasts considered a canal restoration, and quickly grew to become a charitable trust in 1973. It now has nearly 3,000 members and around 350 volunteers engaged in various activities from admin to hedgelaying, boat crewing to bricklaying, repairing and maintaining equipment to grass-cutting. The trust is an almost entirely voluntary organisation, relying on the support of members and friends, as well as the generosity of local businesses and the goodwill of local authorities. It has the services of volunteer professional engineers to design and supervise the restoration work, much of which is carried out by the various working parties plus visiting organisations like the Waterway Recovery Group. There are six parttime staff, including boat trip administrators, canal centre supervisor, book-keeper and a fundraising, press and public relations officer. The Wey & Arun Canal is actually a combination of two canals – the Arun Navigation and the Wey & Arun Junction Canal. The southern part, the Arun Navigation, reached Newbridge near Billingshurst in Sussex in 1787 to serve industries including chalk pits and lime manufacturers. It was linked to the English Channel via the River Arun. In around 1810, visionaries saw the opportunities in linking the Arun to the River Wey, and therefore

also London via the Thames. In 1813, an Act of Parliament authorised the building of the Wey and Arun Junction Canal to extend the navigation up to Stonebridge Wharf, Shalford. The combined canal is 23 miles long and was declared open at Compasses Bridge in Alfold on September 29th 1816. Sadly, the canal had a relatively short life and was eventually usurped by the railways, including the Guildford to Horsham line. It was closed in 1871. WACT is restoring the canal as a public recreation and wildlife amenity. It is enhancing essential features of the natural and manmade landscape, the diversity of habitats and the nature conservation value. A full feasibility study and an independent cost/benefit analysis by the Atkins engineering group boosts confidence that the obstacles can be overcome all along the route, as they have been already on canal restoration schemes elsewhere in the UK. So far, the trust has re-created 3½ miles of fully operational canal in the Loxwood area, where it has a visitor centre and operates three excursion boats. Twenty two bridges have been built or repaired, two aqueducts reconstructed, 11 locks restored, and culverts and towpaths have been rebuilt. For the first time since restoration began, the trust is carrying out simultaneous major projects at more than one site, including building a new Compasses Bridge and the revival of navigation on 1¼ miles of the Summit Level. The new bridge was officially opened by actor Dame Penelope Keith as part of celebrations to mark the combined canal’s 200th anniversary. The design study for phase one of the Bramley Link section, from Shalford to Gosden Aqueduct, is substantially complete, as is the Environmental Impact Analysis. A flood impact study was completed in January 2017, to be followed by the preparation of a planning application and a fundraising campaign. Over the border into West Sussex, volunteers are finishing the re-construction of Gennets Bridge Lock, the next lock north from the current limit of navigation, Southland Lock. WACT is in the early stages of planning restoration from there. Other smaller projects are taking place along the length of the canal, such as the rebuilding of farm bridges across the waterway, restoring towpaths and building a slipway. Favourite container plants
Beautifully-scented plants are always top of my list. The dwarf, compact, lavender cultivars, known as Lavandula angustifolia, are such lovely options for containers in a sunny spot, where their calming, soothing fragrance can be welcomed and enjoyed by all. Lavandula angustifolia 'Lavenite Petite' has a naturally compact habit and produces purple flowers, which grow up to 35cm (15 inches) in height. Lavandula angustifolia â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Purityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is a smidgen taller, growing up to 40cm tall, producing white flowers that are less grey toned than many of the white lavenders currently available. Lavandula angustifolia 'Little Lottie = Clarmo', grows up to 40cm tall and produces quite charming pink flowers. Other options are available such as Lavandula angustifolia 'Miss Muffet = Scholmis', L. angustifolia 'Loddon Blue', and L. angustifolia 'Peter Pan', to name a few. Heliotropes make fantastic container plants. Their flowers are a beautiful shade of deep purple and they produce the most delicious fragrance which is warm and sweet like a cherry pie. Sarah Raven stocks Heliotropium arborescens 'Midnight Skyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Alternatively look for plants at your local nursery. Pelargoniums, erroneously known as Geraniums, grow fantastically well in containers where they will flower all summer long. These floriferous plants are widely available in a variety of different forms and flower colours. Pelargoniums are very accommodating and grow well even if you forget to water them on occasion. Scented leaved Pelargoniums have aromatic foliage. If their leaves are rubbed or crushed their fragrance is released. Some cultivars can be rather pungent! Their fragrant 38
leaves can be used in potpourri or to add flavour to culinary dishes. Pelargonium 'Sweet Mimosa' features larger than usual flowers, in a pretty pale pink colour, touched with a darker shade of plum, and produces leaves that emit a rose scent, as does the widely known Pelargonium 'Attar of Roses' which has gentle pink coloured flowers. Pelargonium 'Lavender Lindy' produces lavender scented leaves and vibrant purple-pink flowers. There's no prizes for guessing the scent produced by Pelargonium 'Prince of Orange'. This very beautiful cultivar features many white flowers, which are brushed with pink, and purple markings. Pelargonium 'Islington Peppermint' produces flowers which feature upper petals of the darkest maroon and contrasting white lower petals. Many other scented-leaved Pelargoniums are available. If you're interested in buying Pelargoniums, Fibrex Nurseries are specialist Pelargonium-growers with an online store. I love the irrepressible cheer that sunflowers bring to the garden. Dwarf sunflowers are ideal for containers, but make haste and sow your seeds now to give your plants sufficient time to grow, flower and set seed before the frosts arrive. Helianthus annuus 'Choco Sun' and Helianthus annuus 'Irish Eyes' are two of my favourite dwarf sunflowers for containers. Seeds of forget-me-nots can be sown now, either in containers or directly in the soil, where they will flower next springtime. Chiltern Seeds offer some lovely varieties, including Myosotis sylvatica 'Snowsylva' a floriferous white flowered forget-me-not, there's also Myosotis sylvatica 'Rosylva' a pink form, and Myosotis sylvatica 'Bluesylva' available in this special forget-me-not series. All of the plants I have recommended here will thrive in peatfree compost. To ensure your plants grow and perform well, it's important to use good quality compost. Dalefoot Composts came top in my recent peat free compost trial. They are made from natural ingredients including sheep's wool, which is absorbent, thus creating moisture retentive compost that doesn't require watering as often. It has a late Saxon/early Norman window and is a hidden gem tucked away in the woods – the signpost is to Milland Church. It was declared redundant in 1974 and has since been under the care of the Friends of Friendless Churches and painstakingly restored. It no longer needs restoration, but needs constant care and maintenance. It is a charming venue and the exhibition is held to support the chapel. There will be about 70 paintings and craft items for sale, as well as a plant stall. There is plenty of parking and places to picnic. Oakleaf Enterprise They are a local mental health charity based in Guildford. They offer vocational training in horticulture, upholstery and IT and also operate as a social enterprise, offering these services to businesses and individuals in the local community. However, the sweet and floral flavours in the gin come through beautifully in this classic cocktail: 60ML SILENT POOL GIN 20ML DRY VERMOUTH In a mixing glass, add the gin and dry vermouth. Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir through until chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass. Finish off with an olive, a twist of lemon peel or a few sprays of Silent Pool Mist Liquid Garnish.

Gin-cured Salmon Gin-cured salmon with juniper berries and coriander seeds is a light and bright garden party favourite. This recipe is by Gill Dupleix and is taken from www.taste.com.au. Image by Ben Dearnley.
Ingredients: 75g table salt 75g caster sugar 1 tsp grated lime zest, plus 1 lime thinly sliced (a mandolin is ideal) 1/2 tsp whole black peppercorns, lightly crushed 1 tsp pink peppercorns (see note) 2 tsps coriander seeds 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 tsp juniper berries, lightly crushed (see note) 80ml gin 400g centre-cut salmon fillet, skin on, pin-boned 2 cucumbers (Lebanese if you can find them) 2 tbsps mint leaves Borage flowers, extra virgin olive oil and toasted sourdough slices, to serve (see note) Serves 4
Method: 1. Combine salt, sugar, zest, black and pink peppercorns, spices, juniper berries and gin. Spread half the spice mixture in a glass or ceramic dish. Add fish, skin-side down, and cover with remaining spice mixture. Cover with plastic wrap and chill overnight, turning fish after 12 hours and spooning any liquid in the dish over the top. Remove salmon from dish, reserving any liquid, and rinse. Pat dry with paper towel. 2. Very thinly slice cucumbers lengthways (a mandoline is ideal) and marinate in the reserved liquid for 30 minutes. Drain, reserving 1 tablespoon 44
spices from curing liquid. 3. Very thinly slice salmon on the diagonal, discarding skin. Arrange on a serving platter. Scatter with cucumber, lime slices, mint, borage flowers and reserved spices. Drizzle with oil and serve with sourdough. Note: â&#x20AC;˘ Pink peppercorns and juniper berries are from delis. Borage flowers are from garden centres and farmers' markets. â&#x20AC;˘ Begin this recipe a day ahead.

Waggoners Wells and Ludshott Common Lakes strung like a necklace; a glistening heath strewn with crimson toadstools in autumn; majestic limes and maples; three historic villages. There is no other walk quite like this quiet and peaceful wander. Waggoners Wells is a famous beauty spot, popular with weekend families but large enough to absorb them all, whilst Ludshott Common is one of the largest areas of heathland in the South East. Dogs are welcome as nearly all the stiles have a generous gap except for one just before Bramshott but Humphrey and I managed it when we did this lovely walk in April. This walk is taken from www.fancyfreewalks.org where the walk can be downloaded with full mapping.
The walk
1. Leave from the back of the car park, past the noticeboard on a broad sandy track. In 30m, you reach the heath by a rustic bench with terrific views south to Butser Hill (with the aerial) and beyond. point your feetto another Cross straight over the crossing track on aofnew sandy track. In 20m, at a fork twopath grassy paths, choose the right fork. In less than 100m, at another fork, take the right fork (really straight on). Immediately veer left on a path coming from the right and, in 10m, turn right on a path uphill, thus regaining your original direction. As the path curves right, a narrow path joins from the left. The path ends at a T-junction with a very wide bridleway. You have reached the far edge of the Common. Turn right on the bridleway. This patch is often muddy, but you really need not worry because in just a few metres the mud will become more manageable. You have meadows on the left and soon on the right too. Nearly 500m after joining this path, you come to a major fork. 3. Turn right at the fork and continue until you join a lane (Gentles Lane) coming from the left. Follow the road past High Hurlands Home and, just after Hurlands itself, fork left on a narrow path through hollies and turn left at a T-junction on a bridleway. Follow the track, first past entrances to Harambee and other properties, then past meadows and a line of poplars and finally down to a road by Tilburys with its well-groomed hedge. Turn left on the road, going past oast houses on your right. Oast houses, used for drying hops, are mainly associated with Kent, but they do in fact appear in other home counties and as far north as Worcestershire. At a road junction, veer right in the direction Whitehill, Liphook. Traverse the deceptively sleepy village of Passfield, passing The Old Forge, The Old Cricketers and other witnesses to rural life. 4. Just before a bridge visible ahead, turn left on a bridleway (a sign says No Fishing). On your right is one of a line of lakes and water meadows that are a feature of this area. (Don’t worry about the sign that says Private Property Keep Out: it refers to the water meadows, not the bridleway.) At a 4-way fingerpost by a house, keep straight on on a track. (As a small diversion, it is worth turning right a few paces down to the waterside where the water fowl, mallards, swans and coots, can be observed close up.) Over on your right are the fine buildings of Passfield Manor. At the end of the track, by a fence, turn sharp right on a track, crossing the Wey South via an old bridge and passing through woodland. The track eventually joins a drive and meets a lane. Turn right to come almost immediately to a T-junction with a main road. 5. Go straight over the main road, a fraction

right, onto a footpath by a National Trust sign for Passfield Common. In just over 100m, turn right before an oak tree across the luminous centre of the common. On the other side, you reach a tree line. Fork left here on a narrow path that skirts the trees and finally leads out to the hamlet of Conford. Turn left through the hamlet, passing the village hall (the old school). When the lane bends right after the last house, leave it by continuing straight ahead on a tarmac bridleway with the elegant stone Conford House up on your left. Ignore a footpath right at a fingerpost. Once again, you have a long lake and water meadows on your right. You pass Conford Park Barn, about 250 years old, usually with fluttering white doves. The bridleway leads through an iron gateway and ends at a tarmac drive. Turn left here, immediately meeting a main road, the B3004. Turn right on the road. 6. Go past houses, and continue to a right bend. Cross the road carefully and turn left on a footpath by a metal gate beside fields. After the first field on the right, turn right along its other edge. At the other side, officially, the path goes over an awkward stile by a metal gate into the farmyard of Bramshott Vale Farm. However, most walkers veer right and left over the grass in front of a barn to avoid the stile. Keep ahead on a concrete track, ignoring a footpath left. After a brick shed, go half-left across the grass, as signed, to meet a wonderful lime avenue. Cross the avenue and negotiate a stile [now made awkward by a fence across it], the corner of a meadow, another stile and another meadow that is often the home to highland cattle and shetland ponies. After a metal gate, turn right on a drive (first glancing left to view the impressive house). Go over a bridge across a lively stream, go through a metal swing-gate and turn left on a lane. After a short distance, you meet a minor road, Church Lane. Turn right here. This deeply sunken lane takes you to
steps where you can turn right up to the churchyard of Bramshott Church of St Mary the Virgin. Leaving Bramshott church on the right, turn left at the T-junction onto Rectory Lane and stay on this lane as it bends right, ignoring all minor lanes off. 7. Stay on this deeply sunken quiet lane for some distance. In about 900m, you pass the gatehouse of Downlands House. 250m further, you reach a T-junction. Turn left. In about 500m, the lane ends at a car park. Go straight on through a metal barrier, keeping to the left side, on a woodland path downhill. Stay on the main, rather uneven, path. At the bottom of the hill, keep to the left

WALK || of a steep slope. A rather muddy path takes you all the way down to the waterside where there is an MoD sign and a bridge. There are several attractive walks around Waggoners Wells and you may prefer to find your own way and diverge from the text. Don’t cross the bridge but keep right and walk parallel to the stream on your left, soon reaching the first lake. Stay on the right bank and, after a section of woodland, reach the second lake. After more woodland, you reach the third lake, which has an especially picturesque wooden bridge over the sluice. Stay on the right bank, soon to pass a noticeboard and, up on the right, a car park . 8. On meeting a tarmac lane coming from the car park, turn left on it and cross a ford, or the footbridge beside it. Just 10m after the ford, turn left on a marked path and immediately fork right uphill on a bridleway, going past a stone memorial on your left. After a modest climb, the path flattens out and, in about 100m, goes over a crossing path. In about another 200m, the path goes under wires and, in a further 80m, meets a junction with a crossing track. Turn right on the crossing track, ignoring the path almost opposite. Soon another track joins from the left. In another 60m, there is a wide gap in the birches lining the track on your left. You are now on a high plain with views left to the Hampshire hills. The path descends to a T-junction. Turn right here. 9. Very shortly after, the path forks. Take the lefthand fork. The path curves left uphill. Stay next to the trees on your right, avoiding all turnings off. The path passes close to a bench seat and runs downhill for a bit passing minor paths off to the left and right until you come to a waymarker on the right. Immediately after it there is some broken down fencing. Immediately after the fencing, and just as the path begins to rise again, take a right fork on a wide path into the woods. The path soon runs clear of the trees and you have fine views again. About 250m from the fork, you finally reach the Ludshott Common car park where the walk began.

St. Wilfrid’s Hospice A vital service for the local community
experienced occupational therapists and physiotherapists who work with patients within all settings with the aim of enhancing overall wellbeing and quality of life. The Education Centre provides a wide range of courses; clinical, degree level and complementary therapies; some of which are open to general public, such as Mindfulness and Dementia Friends. St. Wilfrid’s Hospice in Chichester provides specialist end of life care for people living in the local community free of charge. The hospice serves an area south of the downs broadly stretching from Emsworth in the west to Arundel in the east. Since opening in January 1987, it has cared for over 16,000 people, relying on public support to raise 87% of its annual running costs, which this year will be just over £7 million or around £20,000 per day. These funds are raised by a variety of methods. These include gifts in wills and income from the various hospice shops throughout the area. In addition, contributions are made through general fundraising, including a full programme of events, regular giving and the local hospice lottery. The hospice relies on the support of around 280 volunteers in and around the hospice, with another 200 in the shops. They cover a range of roles from fundraising in local Supporter Groups, transporting patients, assisting the nurses on the ward, supporting bereaved relatives or helping out in the offices. You may be surprised to learn how the work of the Hospice stretches way beyond its Donnington premises…at any one time the hospice cares for around 240 people, and also offers support to their families and friends. As well as the Inpatient Unit with 14 beds, the Day Centre provides patients with emotional support, art therapy, access to complementary therapies, physiotherapy and occupational therapists, and clinical/medical input. Around 40% of patients admitted to the ward for respite or symptom control are able to return home. The specialist trained community team consist of three main services, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Hospice at Home and a Rehabilitation team. The Clinical Nurse Specialists provide support, advice, care co-ordination and much more throughout the community. Each patient has a dedicated nurse who would be their first point of contact after referral. The Hospice at Home team provides more hands on nursing care for people at the very end of life in their own homes, including symptom control and emotional support. The Rehabilitation team consists of highly June 2017
Since 1987 the services offered by the hospice have expanded hugely, and as a result the current hospice building is no longer fit-for-purpose. Relocation was the only cost-effective solution and a new hospice will be built on a site in Bosham, starting this summer with a view to completion in late 2018. This purposedesigned building will incorporate all the 21st Century facilities needed to enable the nursing teams to continue to provide the necessary standards of end of life care to patients and support for their loved ones, now and for the next 30 years and beyond. In January 2016 St Wilfrid’s launched its DREAMBUILDING fundraising campaign, asking the local community for its support, just as it did 30 years ago, to help raise the remainder, which currently stands at £3 million. The DREAMBUILDING website www. dreambuilding.org.uk gives more details of how to get involved. Chair of Trustees, Angela Wormald, commented, “We are right at the start of this exciting project and we have a long way to go in raising at least £15.5 million to build our new hospice. However, from the swell of support we received throughout the planning process, I have no doubt we will achieve this.”
