THE EDITOR'S NOTE I am really delighted with our lead article this month on Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, which I hope will shed some light on not only this important community role but also some of the people behind it. It has been a pleasure to have met both Michael More-Molyneux and Bill Biddell and there is no doubt that they are two of the most dedicated people you could hope to meet. I know that they work enormously hard, take their responsibilities very seriously and give of their time freely, like so many others who also play an active, if less formal and high profile, role in community life. We are lucky to have them representing us. We should also thank Sarah More-Molyneux and Bridget Biddell for the support they give to their husbands. Attending lots of engagements and functions is really not as glamorous as it sounds! One of the Lord-Lieutenant’s roles is to present the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services to volunteer groups and I am pleased that so many local groups whom we have and continue to support in VantagePoint have been honoured with this prestigious award. It is a real thank you to everyone involved in those groups and I know first-hand just what receiving this award means to them. This month we have teamed up with a few partners to extend some special December offers for our readers. Please visit www.vantagepointmag/offers for full details.

Albury Organic Vineyard

Phil Kemp meets the team who are passionate about organic viticulture and biodynamics – and discovers many other surprises too. THE FAMILY-OWNED Albury Vineyard nestles on the southfacing slopes of the North Downs in the picturesque Surrey Hills, right alongside the supposedly ghostly Silent Pool. They produce award-winning wines, but perhaps what makes them stand out from the growing number of successful English vineyards is their bold and imaginative engagement with organic and biodynamic wines.

school’s prize for economics on speech day. We were allowed to choose the book we were to be awarded - and much to his annoyance I had chosen The World Atlas of Wines and Spirits! But it took me some 35 years or so before I actually realised my dream.”

I was invited to meet Nick Wenman and Lucy Letley, the father and daughter team who founded the vineyard in 2008, to discover what is motivating them in what is undoubtedly a challenging but successful journey. The response to my initial question as to how it all started was to set me on the path of a fascinating story.

Seated in their vineyard barn, which serves both as their wine and cheese tasting venue and shop, I had a good view of the vines stretching up the slopes towards the top of the downs.

“My dream of owning a vineyard started in my late teens,” Nick explained. “I still have the wonderful memory of my headmaster’s expression when he presented me with the

“Growing vines is an extremely long-term business. Our original plan was for a 12 or 13-year return on our investment,” Nick explained, and turning towards his daughter added: “But I now see it in terms of generational – so no pressure there then Lucy!” They both laughed out loud. I did however get a very quick impression of how committed the whole team are, which includes their vineyard manager Alex Valsecchi and her assistant Dominic Travers. From my visits to other English vineyards, I was already aware of the considerable threats that viticulturalists face in successfully growing their vines, but at Albury they have extra challenges. “In common with all vineyards, in the growing season we have to guard against both downy and powdery mildews. However, growing organically means we can’t use

ALBURY ORGANIC VINEYARD earth and the plant and the cosmos. And I guess there are broadly two things that we do to try and achieve that. One is that we do our best to follow cycles of the moon and its position in the cosmos. The moon’s gravitational impact will affect the sap flow of the plants so that there are certain days when we might prune, spray or pick for example. And the other thing we do is make lots of natural spray teas and use natural plant preparations in our compost which we make here. The tea we spray over the vines improves their vitality and suppresses disease.” I must confess that this was a new concept for me and I could perhaps understand why, in Lucy’s words, some people might think it sounds a bit crazy. But I was genuinely intrigued, and what Nick explained next reeled me in. He pointed to a large cow horn mounted to the wall behind us. “We gather together cow horns and stuff them with manure from a cow that has recently given birth and is therefore rich and organic manure. We then bury them in the vineyard to over-winter. Come the spring we dig them up by which time they will have fermented and absorbed all of the sub-micro elements from the vineyard.” They then remove the contents and make a tea to spray on the vineyard to improve its vitality. What a concept - but it actually originated at the beginning of the 20th century in Austria in response to increasingly sterile soil on farms. “By the look on your face I’m surprised you haven’t asked if we dance naked on the vineyard too!” laughed Lucy. “But in reality, many great wines of the world come from biodynamic vineyards.”

the effective systemic chemicals but have to take preventative measures using organic friendly sprays without herbicides and pesticides, which makes life a lot harder. And it’s the same in the winery too where the grapes are processed.” Lucy had placed a selection of bottles on the table to show the range of wines they produce, with these including their gold award-winning Sparkling Rose, Classic Cuvée and Blanc de Blancs. However for me one immediately stood out. Their Biodynamic Wild Ferment. “Ah, I wondered when you were going to ask about that!” Nick quipped. “Put simply, biodynamics is a sort of holistic approach to horticulture and viticulture. What we’re trying to do is get a harmony between the

And there was much, much more, to come. However, as space here doesn’t allow I’d thoroughly recommend a visit. You won’t be disappointed. Whilst there be sure to ask about the half a million bees they have in hives - and do taste their Albury Honey and Surrey Hills Mead. Don’t miss out on the brandy that they make from late pressings of their grapes and ferment in little oak barrels. Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey Phil Kemp discovers what duties our representative of the Crown undertakes and how these directly benefit the local community. I was invited to meet Michael MoreMolyneux, who was appointed LordLieutenant in 2015, to explore the multiple roles he undertakes on behalf of The Queen. We were joined by his Vice Lord-Lieutenant Bill Biddell on what for me proved to be a very engaging journey. I must confess that, probably in common with many other Surrey residents, having seen their military-style uniform at events, I assumed all the activity was just handshaking pomp and little more. I very quickly started to appreciate that their responsibilities far exceeded my very simplistic view. “The position of Lord Lieutenant is one of being the Queen’s representative for the county,” Michael started to explain. “There are several responsibilities. Number one are the royal visits, and we have something like 30 royal visits a year to manage. We are also actively involved with local charities, volunteer groups, local businesses and the magistracy.” I knew that the Lieutenancy had its origins during the 16th century and to put

everything in context asked for a potted history. “It started in Henry VIII’s time and was essentially a military position. Although nowadays we don’t have any direct military involvement, we do still have a uniform based on a general’s rank,” said Michael. “Originally the High Sheriff was responsible for raising the army, the taxes, and was in charge of law and order. Henry VIII thought that this level of power was wrong so repealed the Sheriff’s powers and gave the military responsibility to the Lieutenancies. And in fact it wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that the military connection was removed.” I must in passing say at this point that both Michael and Bill very gracefully ignored my regular mispronunciation of ‘Lieutenant’ confusing this occasionally with the Americanism of ‘lootenant’ - although I think Michael’s dog who came to join us and sat close to me for a while was less forgiving, if his regularly raised eyebrows were any indication! As the Queen’s representative for Surrey there is a lot to get to grips with, and this was effectively emphasised by Michael as he picked up and leafed through a rather hefty handbook he had been issued when taking up the appointment. He smiled seeing my reaction. “As well as being formally responsible for upholding the dignity of the Crown in the county, when you break the job down into all of its different facets it then makes much more sense.” “If you looked at the Lord-Lieutenant’s diary you’d be amazed at the variety of things that we get involved

in,” Bill added. “It’s colossal, it really is, and a lot of it is recognising what’s going on all over the county. It touches every area, be that recognising volunteers and charitable activities, or education, media and business. They’re all represented, and most of it I feel is hidden under the surface. You’ll see the photo of the Lord-Lieutenant in his uniform looking magnificent presenting something, but that’s the tip of the iceberg. There’s so much also going on underneath it all.” I suggested we start with what’s involved in the royal visits and what benefits these bring for the local community. “So, for the royal visits we have to decide which of the many representations we get, whether it’s from a charity or a business or another organisation, will be submitted as a bid. These bids are for several royal households and we are planning many months ahead of course,” Michael explained. “Once a visit has been confirmed a lot of additional planning is involved. We meet up with representatives from the royal household, the police, and the venue and walk the course often refining the visit so that literally every minute is catered for. They of course also have security in mind. It’s a huge job just organising a visit. The number of people involved is incredible.” In response to my question as to the benefits that these visits generate Bill was quick to answer. “All visits generate so much goodwill. Everyone involved comes away feeling about six inches taller, they are walking on air. You cannot underrate the value that brings for that organisation, the hospital or whatever it might be.” Bill was looking visibly moved as he recounted a visit by the Queen to the new veterinary school at Surrey University. “It was remarkable.

14

There were people at every single window, and people were crammed down every corridor we went down. The noise of people cheering and shouting. The waving of Union Jacks. It was just like Wembley Stadium.” Both Michael and Bill were smiling broadly at the memory. When I asked Michael to give a brief description of the military uniform they both wear at the more formal events he explained about the difference from a serving general’s uniform, which in essence is in the crown motif and pips on their shoulder-boards as well as the fact that they carry a curved sword. But this triggered a good bit of laughter between the two Lieutenants when they recalled visits, especially to schools where pupils will often ask about their swords. “When asked why I’ve got a sword I’ve been known to jokingly reply: ‘It’s in case I’ve got a problem here at school!’ and in response to ‘How often do you clean it?’ my retort of ‘Well, it depends how often I have to use it!’ always gets a laugh!” said Michael laughing. “My ‘I can get four chickens on mine for the barbecue!’ always goes down well too,” added Bill. “On a serious note though,” said Michael. “Our visits to schools always generate a lot of interest and give them something

I could give lots of examples, but we’ve presented twice to a company in Artington that exports cutting-edge MRI scanners, and then in Shackleford, which has to perhaps be the sleepiest village in the county (both laugh at his quip) to a hightech communications business operating out of Stovolds Barn.” “I chair the Advisory Committee on Justices of the Peace every three months and I’m full of admiration for what JPs do, especially when you see the cases that they have to deal with - and all unpaid? Did you know that?” I must confess that I didn’t. Both Michael and Bill spoke highly of the support that they get from the 40 or so Deputy Lieutenants and from Caroline Breckell, Deputy Clerk to the Lieutenancy who has been in post for over 25 years. I must say that overall my departing impression of the Lieutenancy was one of their commitment and service, not just to Her Majesty The Queen but equally to the communities of Surrey.

Above: Michael More-Molyneux, who presented the Queen’s Award for Enterprise to David Taylor, CEO at MR Solutions in Artington, along with the Rt. Hon. Anne Milton, MP for Guildford, the Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Nigel Manning; and Sarah More-Molyneux.

else to learn and discuss. We get many appreciative comments from the teaching staff.” And what of the other Lord-Lieutenancy roles? “Well, the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services is very important,” explained Bill. “We have the most fantastic groups of volunteers in Surrey that have been put forward for this. Nominations go through the Cabinet Office and the successful awards really do put a feather in their caps. A great example is Frensham Pond Sailability where volunteers educate and train disabled sailors. I think Surrey is very fortunate to have really good groups of volunteers in all sorts of areas spread right across the county.”

WINCHESTER AT CHRISTMAS

Lynda Lawrence visits the one-time royal capital, a world apart and just an hour away AS THE one-time royal capital of England, Winchester’s strategic location close to the two major ports of Portsmouth and Southampton makes it a perfect place to stop for a short break. Yet this beautiful city is close enough for a day trip, with the travel time from most of our homes to the historic heart of Winchester Cathedral’s Inner Close taking no more than around an hour. December is probably the most exciting time to visit the city as it prepares for the festive season, with the cathedral hosting its Christmas Market throughout December until the 20th. Considered to be one of the best in Europe

because of its unique location, the market has over a hundred ski chalet style shopping outlets selling a vast range of unusual and interesting gifts. The market surrounds a large ice skating rink, also open throughout December and on until 2nd January, and visitors can also enjoy Christmas Tower Tours of the cathedral with elevated view of the market and across the city. This compact cathedral city is still on a human scale, with most of its attractions and amenities within walking distance of each other, such as the Theatre Royal Winchester which will be presenting a traditional pantomime ‘Beauty and the Beast’ throughout December. The theatre is just a few minutes walk from the High Street with its range of interesting shops, street entertainers and regular street markets. The city has also become the foodie capital of Hampshire, with its wide choice of eateries and has attracted renowned chefs such as Rick Stein and Raymond Blanc into the city to open their own restaurants, with the recent addition of The Ivy Winchester Brasserie. TV presenter Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall has also opened up his

WINCHESTER AT CHRISTMAS

River Cottage Kitchen at the old Abbey Mill in the tranquil setting of Abbey Mill Gardens, just a short walk from the hustle and bustle of the shopping area. Another very short walk will take you to the National Trust’s Winchester City Mill, fed by the River Itchen which offers some peaceful wildlife walks and the feeling of finding yourself instantly in a country setting, yet it is just a stone’s throw from the busy city.

This is just one of the many historic places to visit during a short stay in the area, along with Gilbert White’s House and Museum at Selborne. White was an English naturalist and ornithologist and best known for his book ‘The Natural History of Antiquities of Selborne’, one of the most published books in literary history.

Winchester also boasts one of the largest farmer’s markets, The Hampshire Farmer’s Market, bringing delicious local produce showcasing the best of what Hampshire has to offer. All of the stallholders are the producers; small businesses based in rural areas of the county. The market is so popular that it holds two markets, on the second and last Sunday of each month, from 9am-2pm in the High Street.

There are also a number of attractions in the area that all the family can enjoy including The Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium, located next to the Holiday Inn Winchester, which has a huge range of Christmas and festive events running throughout December. Paulton’s Park with its Peppa Pig attraction is also within easy reach of Winchester, as well as Marwell Wildlife and the National Trust’s Hinton Ampner estate.

The combination of so many experiences may be too much to fit into one day and there is always the option to stay a little longer with a short break, giving time to really explore all the aspects of this fascinating and historic city from its statue of King Alfred to the enchanting back streets, where you will discover some of the most beautiful architecture in the country. It is along these back streets and into College Street where you will find a blue plaque on one of the houses that commemorates the place where Jane Austen died. This renowned author is buried inside Winchester Cathedral. Jane Austen completed the majority of her novels in the quintessentially English country village of Chawton with her former home now a museum, just 20 minutes drive from Winchester just off the A31 on the way back to Guildford.

Take another short drive from Winchester and you will be able to access all of the history and beauty of our two major South Coast sea ports, with Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard a ‘must see’ attraction with HMS Victory, the Royal Navy’s most famous warship, best known for her role in the Battle of Trafalgar. Further along the south coast the vibrant city of Southampton’s Sea City Museum is just one of the many interesting places to visit while on a short break to Winchester. For those wishing to linger a little longer there is always the New Forest to explore, which looks beautiful at any time of the year. www.visitwinchester.co.uk/whats-on/christmas/

Smoked salmon tasting - our verdict! AT A recent editorial meeting, it was our Lauren who came up with the idea of tasting various smoked salmon in the December issue and give our verdict to readers. As you can imagine, we all warmly embraced the idea. I researched the contact details for all the major supermarkets in the VantagePoint area, and also contacted a couple of mail order specialists. The first person to get in touch was Lance Forman from H Forman & Sons in London, the world’s oldest producer of smoked salmon. He immediately offered to provide some of their salmon but insisted on bringing samples down himself so that he could talk to us about the evolving history of smoked salmon and offer tips on what to look for when doing a tasting like this, to which we readily agreed. H Forman & Sons was founded in London’s East End by Lance’s great-grandfather, Aaron ‘Harry’ Forman, in 1905 and is the last surviving smokehouse in London. A Russian émigré from Odessa, he saw potential in the curing of fresh salmon as a means of preserving the fish. The fish used originally originated from the Baltic but they soon started using Scottish salmon, which became very popular and Britain’s first home-grown gourmet food. The secret was the ‘London Cure’, which was and is a very simple recipe which preserves those wonderful flavours – the freshest salmon, a little salt, just the right amount of oak smoke. Nothing else. ‘London Cure Smoked Salmon’ is the only smoked salmon in the world with the highly prized protected name (PGI) status, and London’s first ever food or drink to achieve this coveted recognition. The popularity of smoked salmon and its introduction to supermarkets and a wider audience saw big changes in the industry. Salmon farms started, and bigger, more commercial

22

V.

Godalming & Cranleigh

H Forman & Sons

smokehouses started up, mostly in Scotland to be nearer the source of the fish. The way the fish was preserved also became more commercial for a number of reasons - to reduce costs, increase margins, meet price points and generally keep the product affordable for most consumers. As you can imagine, this has an impact on the flavour. Three quarters of all smoked salmon in the UK now comes from Norway, and while it is 10-15% cheaper, it also takes much longer to arrive, compromising the freshness of the fish. The rest comes from Scotland, almost all of which is now farmed, as there are currently some curbs in place over the fishing of wild salmon, making it very much more rare and thus expensive. Do remember to check the packaging and note that ‘Scottish smoked salmon’ is not the same as ‘Smoked Scottish salmon’! When deciding what product to buy, the key ingredient to look out for is sugar. This is used for a number of reasons - to reduce the taste of additional salt sometimes used to prolong shelf life or to add weight to the fish by retaining more of the water in it to make it a cheaper product. It may also be used to counteract excessive smoking on fish that is perhaps not as fresh as it could be - the smoke helps disguise the flavour. Purists insist that quality smoked salmon should contain no sugar at all, unless it is Gravadlax which is not smoked and has a completely different curing process. The two main complaints about smoked salmon tend to be that it is too smoky and/or too slimey. Good quality salmon should be neither. See overleaf to see how the whole team got on with our tasting, which took place at the beginning of November...

In addition to the H Forman & Sons salmon, we were provided with samples sent to us from the following suppliers: Loch Fyne, Sainsburys and Waitrose. In addition, we bought packs from Aldi, Lidl, Marks & Spencer and Tesco. All were tasted straight from the packet with no other flavourings. Full star Half star

1

London Cure Smoked Salmon (H Forman & Sons)

This really was excellent. Lovely light colour, very slightly smoked with a great, almost buttery salmon flavour, not overly salty. A lovely soft texture. We tried two versions, a ‘lean’ cut and a ‘fatty’ cut which come from different parts of the same salmon, both having their devotees. You can specify when ordering or the standard packs will have some of both. We also tried the Royal Fillet, which was exceptional.  £12.95 for 200g. www.formanandfield.co.uk

2

Bradam Orach Smoked Salmon (Loch Fyne)

This was not too smoked with a good texture. Very meaty and a good flavour, reasonably salty but not excessive. Light colour. Very enjoyable. Winner of the Fish & Seafood category of the Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards 2018.  £10.50 for 200g. www.lochfyne.com

3

Twice Smoked Scottish Lochmuir Smoked Salmon (M&S)

This was perhaps a little chewy but not too smoky, very lean, with a good salmon taste, smooth texture. Attractive colour. Very good.  £5 for 100g. www.marksandspencer.co.uk

5=

Sliced Smoked Salmon (Aldi)

This looked as if it had been previously frozen and it was a little mushy on the palate. Quite lean, lightly smoked, a little greasy perhaps but a good flavour. The fish is Norwegian.  £3.99 for 200g. www.aldi.co.uk

4

Finest Mild and Delicate Smoked Scottish Salmon (Tesco)

Quite gamey, good texture, quite lean and not over smoked. Pale colour. A bit oily and salty but very pleasant.  £4 for 100g. www.tesco.com

5=

Chestnut Smoked Scottish Salmon (Waitrose 1)

Quite a good texture and very lightly smoked. Not a great deal of flavour and certainly no chestnut. Very lean, pleasantly thin slices. Not bad at all.  £5.99 for 100g. www.waitrose.com

The others: Finest Strong and Robust Smoked Scottish Salmon (Tesco)  Very smoky flavour, quite chewy, salty and not comparable to their other salmon. Deluxe Scottish Smoked Salmon (Lidl)  Quite smoky, very chewy, not a good texture and not much flavour. Odd colour. Maple Cured Scottish Smoked Salmon glazed with Maple Syrup & Orange (Sainsburys)  The salmon flavour drowned out by an overly sweet glaze which was not great. Good texture though. Specially Selected Smoked Salmon (Aldi)  Did not taste very fresh, quite tough, very smoky, greasy and not a great aftertaste. December 2018

PROFILE

THE PURPOSE of The Arts Society Cranleigh is to promote interest and the appreciation of a wide range of art, not just paintings, but also, for example, music, architecture, photography, furniture, gardens and much more. An integral part of the Society’s promotion is to offer 10 talks each year, presented by accredited specialists in their own fields. The Art of 19th Century Vienna, Mille Miglia – cars and culture, Arts of Zen and Great Artworld Feuds are examples of topics covered this year. As certain subjects require a more detailed investigation, the society presents Special Interest Days, held on Saturdays twice a year, when two or three talks are given on the same topic. A history of the Shaker movement, and the background to Stonehenge are the two fields covered this year. As well as talks, the society organises group holidays with Arts themes – this year to Malta and Suffolk. Less time consuming are day visits, to such places as Winchester, Mottisfont Abbey, the Blue Idol Quaker Meeting House, a London Tour of places relevant to the Suffragette movement, and a private tour of Westminster Abbey with the Purcell Club.

all details of such items as stonework, woodwork, textiles, paintings, and memorials are recorded, and a bound copy presented to the Church, with further copies given to the Victoria & Albert Museum and similar institutions. Forthcoming talks of the society include: Art and the Suffragettes The Music and Life of J S Bach The Magnificent Maya Plus a visit to Waddesdon Manor at Christmas The society welcomes new members, and on Saturday 8th December, will be presenting a free event to celebrate Christmas, with Bertie Pearce, a member of the Inner Magic Circle. All are welcome, to both this and to any of our monthly talks, held in both the afternoon and evening on the fourth Wednesday of each month, except August or December.

The society also seeks to foster interest in The Arts amongst young people, through Young Arts, which coordinates the funding of art projects involving local schools, in particular an annual exhibition of the work of students at the Cranleigh Arts Centre. Church Recording also comprises part of the Society’s brief, by which a comprehensive record of everything within a local church is prepared –

OUR LATEST NEWS

NEW MEMORIAL PLAQUES Godalming Town Council’s Remembrance Sunday was particularly poignant this year as, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh month of 2018, the Godalming War Memorial was rededicated to remember all those who died in 20th Century conflicts.

Farncombe, Busbridge Church, The United Church or the Fire Station. During the last four years both Godalming Town Council and Godalming Museum have recorded as accurately as possible the list of 281 Godalming names who fell during WW1 plus subsequent campaigns. Four new plaques have been engraved and installed on the wall next to the existing plaques commemorating those who died in WW2.

281 Godalming men fell during WW1 but not all of their names are recorded on the Memorials which can be found in St Peter & St Paul’s Church, St John's Church

NEW MEMORIAL GARDEN HONOURING 281 GODALMING WW1 MEN November during the weekend of commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the armistice. Based on an idea from Councillor David Hunter, the memorial garden will serve to honour the 281 men from Godalming who died in the Great War, together with all those in the Godalming Community who were affected by the war. The garden has been designed by Michele Clackson who won a competition organised by the Go Godalming Association’s Godalming in Bloom Committee. The garden design brief included the necessity to provide a garden of interest for visitors throughout the year and a space for peace, relaxation and contemplation whilst remembering the sacrifices that were made by the local community during the First World War.

As well as the four new memorial plaques, work has been carried out over the summer months by the Godalming Joint Burial Committee to build a new memorial garden in the Victorian Nightingale Road Cemetery.

The Godalming Joint Burial Committee hope residents and visitors will enjoy the peace and tranquillity within the garden especially those connected with the 281 fallen of Godalming.

The garden was officially opened by the Mayor of Godalming, Councillor Nick Williams, on Saturday 10

GODALMING FLOOD ALLEVIATION SCHEME

to refurbish The Pepperpot have been identified, along with works needed to be able to offer Godalming businesses a centrally located modern meeting and training room. An internal refurbishment will mean that a suitable environment will be created, not only to meet the needs of Godalming’s small and medium business market, but also assist the Town Council’s desire to enhance the educational provision of Godalming Museum by providing a safe classroom environment for visiting school groups.

Godalming has a history of flooding with four notable events in recent years, in 1968, 1990, 2000 and 2013. During the most recent 2013 flood, the Meadrow and Catteshall Road area was flooded, with access from Meadrow to Godalming severely restricted. To reduce flooding in the Meadrow/Catteshall area and to create resilience to those homes and businesses affected by the 2013/14 flooding of the Meadrow and Catteshall Road area a flood wall is being built along the banks of the Hell Ditch with a demountable flood barrier on Catteshall Bridge Road. This will reduce the likelihood of flooding to at least 90 properties in the area. The Plan is for construction to take place from both ends and work towards the middle (near Catteshall Bridge). To see newsletters (including site map) and more information on GFAS please visit https://godalming-tc. gov.uk/godalming-flood-alleviation-scheme. The Godalming Flood Alleviation Scheme (GFAS) is a partnership project between the Environment Agency, Godalming Town Council, Surrey County Council Waverley Borough Council, Thames Water, Scottish and Southern Electricity, Regional Flood & Coastal Committee, the Godalming Flood Group, and supported by the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP.

TOWN IMPROVEMENTS Godalming Town Council is undertaking a number of significant improvements to areas in Godalming including the public toilets at Crown Court, noticeboards, a new bench at Spring Grove and Green Lane and most noticeably improvements to the treasured and iconic pink building at the top of the high street, where works 30

The refurbishment to Godalming’s iconic Pepperpot has been made possible, once again by the generosity of The Peter Caudle Memorial Trust. Peter was a staunch guardian of the historic character of the town and especially the Church Street area and we are sure he would approve of our plans to give the old Council Chamber "a new lease of life”. The support of The Peter Caudle Memorial Trust will ensure that the refurbishment of the building will be carried out sympathetically and in keeping with its listed status. PUBLIC TOILETS CROWN COURT As part of the continued improvement programme of the public toilets, a number of improvements will be made to upgrade the Crown Court facilities to offer a more pleasant experience including replacing the existing WC’s and making good and re-painting of all woodwork and replacing existing lighting with LED fittings. NOTICEBOARDS Godalming Town Council is responsible for public noticeboards that are available at various sites around Godalming and Farncombe. These ‘open’ boards are at locations listed on the Godalming Town Council website (Streetscene). Two new noticeboards will be installed in Crownpits and Borough Road over the next few weeks. NEW BUS SHELTER Residents of Furze Lane & Northbourne will soon see work to install a new shelter at the bus stop at the end of Furze Lane. This shelter is being installed by Godalming Town Council with funding made available from Section 106 Funds. NEW PUBLIC BENCH Godalming Town Council will be providing a new public bench at the bus stop in Spring Grove, which should be installed before Christmas 2018.

A GREENER LOOK FOR GREEN LANE SHOPS

Our floral displays are at their peak during the summer months and it would be a lovely way to mark a special occasion such as a birthday, anniversary or even to remember a special friend or relative. If you would like to support Floral Godalming in 2019, please contact community@godalming-tc.gov.uk.

EVER THOUGHT ABOUT BECOMING A COUNCILLOR?

Godalming Town Councillors and Members of the Farncombe Initiative (a volunteer group dedicated to making improvements and building a sense of community in Farncombe and Binscombe) were recently involved in a planting session in the area around the Green Lane shops. The green areas surrounding the car parks had become tired and most of the trees and shrubs had died. Two action days took place in September – a group of volunteers and residents took part in preparing the ground for new planting and on Saturday 29 September, the newly prepared areas were planted with carefully chosen shrubs and plants. As you can see from the picture, the area is looking very smart. Further improvements are in the pipeline as the area will benefit from some new benches and planters too.

FLORAL GODALMING

Having received many lovely comments from residents and visitors about the new floral planters and hanging baskets throughout our town, Godalming Town Council is making plans to bring back the delightful blooms for 2019.

Having already received pledges from local businesses to sponsor a flower trough, bollard planter or a hanging basket to brighten up our town centre with a glorious splash of colour and magnificent blooms in 2019, it is also possible for residents to celebrate a loved one in a completely unique way by sponsoring a hanging basket or trough in Godalming town centre. December 2018

Would you like to make a difference to your area or improve the lives of local people? Are you passionate about the area you live in? Would you like to represent your community? Town Council elections are being held in May 2019. If you live or work in Godalming and are over 18, you have an exciting opportunity to stand as a Town Councillor. As a local councillor, your residents will expect you to represent their area and: • respond to their queries and investigate their concerns; • communicate council decisions that affect them; • know your patch and be aware of any problems; • know and work with representatives of local organisations, interest groups and businesses; • represent their views at council meetings; and • lead local campaigns on their behalf. If you wish to find out more about the work of GTC please call the Town Clerk on 01483 523575 to have an informal chat or see www.godalming-tc.gov.uk/ supporting-our-community.

GODALMING DEMENTIA FRIENDLY CINEMA SCREENING Visiting the cinema is a great pleasure which most people take for granted. People affected by dementia find it difficult to continue to participate in this form of entertainment. Under the Town Council’s Community Grant Scheme, £500.00 was awarded to support Dementia Friendly Godalming, Godalming Film Society and the Town Council in a pilot Dementia Friendly Cinema Screening at the Wilfrid Noyce Centre on Saturday, 15 December. The matinee screening of It’s A Wonderful Life starts at 2.00pm, door open at 1.15pm. Christmas gifts for gardeners

In this column I share my favourite gift ideas with you. These are the best products that I have personally tried and tested this year (full reviews at www.pumpkinbeth.com), as part of my quest to help you find quality presents for your loved ones this Christmas! VEGEPOD IS an award-winning container gardening system that is really quite marvellous. This raised bed system has universal appeal. You don’t need access to the soil, so if you’re gardening on concrete but ache to grow vegetables, this is for you. Vegepod is ideal for gardeners with

back problems, as it eliminates the need to stoop or bend, while disabled gardeners can actually garden sitting in their wheelchair, facing forward, without the need to twist around. Vegepod’s design benefits everyone, which is wonderful. The Vegepod is self-watering, while the cover protects your plants from pests and light frosts. If you’re renting or likely to move home, you can take your Vegepod with you. I got my Vegepod this summer and am so looking forward to using it in 2019! If you’re an indoor gardener, you might be interested to see my BiOrbAir terrariums and my indoor gardens. This year I have installed a custom-built terrarium from RainforestVivs, I am thrilled with it. Whether you garden indoors or outdoors, you might be interested to read how I track the temperature, light, and humidity levels inside my home, terrariums, glasshouse, and outdoors.

GARDENING Christmas gifts, he kindly offered to make me a complimentary trug of my choice. I love growing cut flowers, so I chose the Trug Makers Daffodil Trug. Over the past three years, this rather lovely trug has helped to harvest cut flowers, fruit, vegetables, and herbs. I love it! If you’re looking for a special gift for a teetotal friend or relation, you may be interested to hear about Seedlip, a range of distilled non-alcoholic spirits, which contain no sugar or calories. Seedlip is also vegan, suitable for diabetics and free from most allergens including gluten, wheat, oat, and barley. I am proud to be a member of a number of Surrey horticultural societies. Membership of a horticultural society is a great gift idea, which can introduce your gift recipient to a lovely new group of friends and widen their gardening knowledge in the process. There are many great local gardening societies who meet regularly across Surrey. If you’re looking for a society that meets near you, or a friend or relation, visit www.surreyhorticulturalfederation.org for information of local horticultural societies and their talks and events. The Surrey Horticultural Federation are hosting a special afternoon talk with Gardeners’ World presenter Nick Bailey. Nick will be giving his new talk, entitled, ‘Revive your Garden’, at 2.30pm, on Sunday 10th March 2019, at Normandy Village Hall, Manor Fruit Farm, Glaziers Lane, Normandy, GU3 2DE. Tickets are limited and available in advance. Ticket prices: £7.50 for members of affiliated societies, £10 for non-members, any unsold tickets will all be £10 on the door. Please enclose a stamped envelope, marked with your address, with a cheque payable to Surrey Horticultural Federation and post to SHF Secretary, Redleaf Nursery, Green Lane, Tilford, Farnham, GU10 2AP. The National Vegetable Society are hosting a very special evening with Vegetable Expert Barry Newman. Barry Newman will give a talk entitled ‘Growing in Containers’ providing advice for all aspects of growing vegetables, fruit, and herbs in containers, covering growing mediums, varieties, and

cultural instructions, at 8pm on Wednesday 14th March 2018, at East Horsley Village Hall, Kingston Avenue, East Horsley, Leatherhead, KT24 8QT. Entrance is free for NVS members. Tickets are £1 for members of affiliated societies, £2 for RHS students, and £5 for all other visitors. Please post an SAE (stamped envelope, marked with your address), together with a cheque for your tickets, made payable to the National Vegetable Society Surrey District Association to NVS Treasurer, 1 Oakfields, West Byfleet, Surrey, KT14 6RZ. Dalefoot Composts produce a range of peat free, woolbased composts that require less watering than regular composts. Dalefoot Composts have won my Compost Trials for the past five years in a row, so I can highly recommend them. Dalefoot Compost is delivered to homes across the UK, making it a super gift for a friend or relation who is unable to collect bags of compost from the garden centre themselves. I’ve read some interesting and informative books this year, including three books by Jeff Lowenfels: Teaming with Nutrients (ISBN:978-1-60469-314-0), Teaming with Fungi (ISBN:978-1-60469-729-2) and Teaming with Microbes (co-authored with Wayne Lewis, ISBN:978-1-60469-1139). Tony Kirkham and George E Brown’s excellent book, Essential Pruning Techniques for Trees, Shrubs, and Conifers (ISBN:978-1-60469-288-4) is also recommended. All published by Timber Press. Garden membership (or the National Trust) makes a super gift. You’ll find a list of local gardens which offer membership on my website. You could also give membership of conservation charities, like Plant Heritage, who hold regular meetings and talks in Cobham, or Plantlife, who work to protect wild flowers and the British countryside. Presents are lovely, but true friendship and time spent together are priceless. I hope that you’ll enjoy a magical Christmas, may all your gardening dreams come true in 2019! FIND OUT MORE You’ll find full product reviews for all of these gift ideas and many others at www.pumpkinbeth.com along with gardening advice for the month ahead and information about houseplants, terrariums, orchids, and all manner of indoor and outdoor plants.

V. Leith Hill, Surrey - Hills, Mills and Gunpowder WEEKEND WALK

The perennially popular Ramblers Festival of Winter Walks is back, taking place this year from Friday 21st December to Sunday 6th January. Ramblers groups across the UK are offering a selection of free festive walks to give everyone the chance to enjoy the wonderful winter landscape in good company, and to make new friends at a time of year when many people can feel lonely or isolated. During the festival there are hundreds of walks planned across the country, so there is something for everyone, from short festive strolls to more strenuous walks: Visit www.ramblers.org.uk/winter for details of hundreds of free group walks taking place across the country. Our walk this month is taken with kind permission from the Ramblers. It is a circular route in the Surrey Hills AONB which passes sleepy Surrey mill hamlets and 'hammer' ponds and climbs to a 360-degree view from Leith Hill Tower. It follows wide, well maintained bridleways to Friday Street, then along narrower forest tracks. 1. With Holmbury St Mary bus stop (one stop after the Royal Oak) on your left, walk a short distance along the road then turn left into Pasture Wood Road. Walk past Bulmer Farm on your left and a minor turning on your right. As the road turns left take a right turn onto the Greensand Way. Follow the Greensand Way through Pasture Wood for approximately 20 mins until you reach High Ashes Farm. Go past the farm and turn right at the fingerpost and continue on the Greensand Way, but take the first left to cut a corner and rejoin the Greensand Way 5 mins later, where you turn left up the hill to a road. Cross the road, turn right and then turn left onto a footpath. Turn left again immediately, ignoring the wide main track. After approximately 2 mins turn right and after another 1 or 2 mins take the right fork, following a sign to the tower. After a further 2 mins fork left and continue on the upward path following more signs to the tower. The path joins a wide track which leads up to an open space and Leith Hill Tower (TQ139431). Leith Hill at 294 metres (965 ft) is the highest point on the Greensand Ridge, and is the second highest point in south-east England. Leith Hill Tower, an 18th century Gothic tower, stands on the summit with panoramic 23/10/2018 Print route - Ramblers views northwards to London and the English Channel Print route to the south. 2. From Leith Hill, with the tower on your left, walk Leith Hill, Surrey - Hills, Mills and Cake downhill on the Green Trail toGunpowder a crossroads where you turn left along the Greensand Way again. There 4 hours 10.5km / 6.5mi Moderate is developer: now Walk a pleasant descent through the woods Route Britain Route checker: approximately Steve Hull lasting 20 mins, passing a crossroads at Whiteberry Gate, past Warren Farm to the track junction.

3. For an optional 15 min detour to the source of the Tillingbourne and Brookwick Copse, turn right towards Tilling Springs (signposted), and then left at a finger post, passing across the bridge over the Tillingbourne and uphill to a staggered gate. Turn left downhill just before the gate and follow the poorly defined track passing through holly and bracken of Brookwick Copse which eventually becomes marshland. Use the boardwalk provided then follow the path uphill again to rejoin the Greensand Way at Pond Cottage. There are some fairly steep ascents and descents in this short detour and it can be muddy in places. The Evelyn family of Wotton dominated Surrey's milling industry from the sixteenth century. Over 400 years ago, George Evelyn learned the secret formula of producing cheap saltpetre during his military service on the Continent. The Evelyns were rewarded by Queen Elizabeth I when she granted them the monopoly for the manufacture of gunpowder. George wasted little time, and soon a number of large gunpowder mills, but also iron and paper works, sprang up along the banks of the river Tillingbourne. Many 'hammer ponds' – artificial basins – were gouged along its course to power the waterwheels. Against great opposition, Brookwick Copse was taken from the common land and enclosed by George Evelyn to power his mill at Abinger Hammer. 4. If you’re not taking the detour, continue along the Greensand Way past Pond Cottage down to a road and riding stables at Broadmoor. Turn left up the road to Broadmoor and turn right on the path next to the Parish Council noticeboard. Bear right at the first fork and left at a second fork and press on uphill to a T-junction. Turn left and across two small roads and past the sign for the Wotton Estate. Continue through the woods past Severalls Copse (National Trust) down to the road, turning left to the mill pond at Friday Street. Circle the pond round to the left and up to the Stephen Langton pub in Friday Street. Friday Street features a huge man-made pond, a hammer pond used to power a large waterwheel. Its pub is named after the thirteenth century Archbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langton, a member of the

baron's council which forced King John to sign the Magna Carta in 1215 at Runnymede. It is claimed Langton was born in Friday Street. 5. Carry on with the pub on your left up the lane and take the first right (unmarked footpath) at the gate into the woods of Abinger Common. Push through any overgrowth and climb the short steep woodland track which soon levels out. Continue (westerly), ignoring another path leading backwards, to reach a fork where you turn left (ignoring a small path to your right) to reach a five-way junction. Take the second right down through the woods, crossing another path (ignore the downhill path going slightly right here). Continue for another 5 mins ignoring small paths to right and left until you emerge on the road. Abinger Common bus stop is to your right (buses to Guildford and Dorking). To your left is a small green with a well, built by William John Evelyn (1893), and Goddards house, designed and built by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1898. 6. To continue back to Holmbury St Mary, cross the green and follow a well defined footpath through Pasture Wood, which starts nearly opposite the red phone box. Pasture Wood is one result of the drive to reforest the Surrey Hills started by the diarist John Evelyn in reparation for the damage done to the local environment by his ancestors. Ignore all turnings left and right and stay on the

main track, which undulates through the woods. Pass a plantation of large conifers on the right and stay on the main track until it narrows and starts to descend. Here bear left to leave the main track and head steeply downhill on a narrow forest path to a kissing gate (about 15 mins). Continue straight ahead across the path junction turning left on the main road to reach Holmbury St Mary and the Royal Oak pub. Continue along the maIn road to reach the starting point at the next bus stop. Please note that one walker had problems with locked gates on MOD land on last month's walk Aldershot and the Basingstoke Canal. It may be therefore be worth checking with the MOD beforehand.

What an amazing year for apples. Our neighbours have a magnificent Bramley apple tree that very fortunately for us overhangs quite a lot into our garden. We have been picking up windfalls for weeks and have made apple pies, baked apples and crumbles; not to mention all the apple puree we have bagged and frozen. Now looking forward to some roast pork and apple sauce! Anyway, we hope you have a wonderfully peaceful and happy Christmas and a great New Year. Peter Pan and The Loose Boys Thursday 29th November to Saturday 5th January 8pm Guildford Fringe Theatre Company returns to the Back Room of The Star Inn with Guildford’s sixth Adult Panto. For people who haven’t been to see an adult panto before, it can be described as “Fun, yet professional, rude but tasteful (in places... not many places!)”. It is strictly for over 18s and not for anyone likely to be easily offended. There are Saturday matinees at 3pm, Sundays at 5pm and the venue is The Back Room of The Star Inn, Quarry Street, Guildford. Tickets: £18.50 (£17.50 concessions) + booking fees. The Arts Society Haslemere Tuesday 4th December 2pm Valerie Woodgate will be giving a lecture at Haslemere Hall, Bridge Street, Haslemere entitled ‘The Art of Christmas’. Only Matthew and Luke describe the birth of Christ and the circumstances leading up to it, and give very few details. Over many centuries the limited information in the Gospels has been expanded into a rich blend of legend and fact. This lecture will explain how the wise men became kings, how it was decided that there were three of them, the symbolism associated with their gifts, how animals turned up at the event, why the stable is always in ruins, and much more. The lecture is followed by a Christmas tea. Visitors and new members are very welcome. For more details, contact The Arts Society Haslemere Membership Secretary Sue Wright on 01428 683578 or email membership@ theartssocietyhaslemere.org. More information at www. theartssocietyhaslemere.org.uk. Parkinson’s UK Are you responsible for booking speakers for your club meetings? If so this could be just who you need! Valerie Box is the volunteer speaker in Surrey and borders for Parkinson’s UK, the charity that supports those affected by Parkinson’s and also provides the greatest amount of research funding in the UK. She can adjust the length of her presentation to suit your needs, and does not charge. 1 adult in 350 has the Parkinson’s and 1 in 10 is diagnosed before they are 40. Valerie covers Parkinson’s itself- what it is and its effects; the various support facilities provided by the charity, the latest research and finally ways in which individuals or groups might like to help that work. If you are interested, email vbox@parkinsons.org.uk, or phone Valerie on 01428 682678. Surrey Youth Theatre Christmas Show Wednesday 5th December 7pm Everything you see on stage at this Cranleigh Arts Centre event will be devised and performed by the students of Surrey Youth Theatre. It is a thrilling experience for them. Using themes, emotions, situations and locations, the show will be 30 minutes of rollercoaster emotions. Tickets are £8, call 01483 278000 (Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4.30pm) or visit www.cranleighartscentre.org. Guildford Rugby Club They are continuing their winning ways and as I write are still lying third in the London & South East Premier League. I watched them play Wimbledon recently in an absolutely thrilling game. Guildford won by a single point after scoring under the post in the final play of the match. Wimbledon are top of the league and have long been a bogey team for Guildford so this was a memorable result. The next home games are Bedford Athletic on Saturday 1st December and a local derby against Dorking on Saturday 15th December when most of the VantagePoint team will be there for the club’s Christmas Lunch. Hope to see you there!
