THE EDITOR'S NOTE IN THIS issue, we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War. At 11am on Sunday 11th November 2018, communities throughout the country will mark this annual act of remembrance which this year takes on additional significance. For 11 years, I have been a councillor in my home town of Godalming and have been enormously proud to represent those who elected me at our annual service. In all those years, the weather has been extremely kind to all of us who parade and then gather at the war memorial for our act of remembrance. What has struck me most is the increasing number of people, mainly families, not only coming along to view the parade but actually take part in the service. Our service is one of great solemnity, where the two minute silence is only ever broken only by the gentle clatter of the London to Portsmouth train, as hundreds of men, women and children remember those who gave their lives in WWI, some 281 from Godalming alone, as well as those who fell in subsequent campaigns. It is a service replicated all over the country, a time for us all to reflect, to honour, and to give thanks. Every year I also get the chance to sell Royal British Legion poppies, and I am always delighted with the generosity shown by so many. People already wearing a poppy quite often will empty their pockets into the tin as they walk past, and notes are now much more common, although it must be said that the new polymer bank notes are not as easy to fold – but please do not let that stop you from giving as generously as you can this year! It would be very fitting for the Royal British Legion to collect a record amount, this year of all years.

HEALTH IS WEALTH Jo Butler from Physio 1to1 on the benefits of keeping active ‘HEALTH IS wealth’ is a saying we don’t use enough in daily life. Unfortunately ‘Time is money’ tends to get quoted far more often. We live in a wealth-focussed landscape but it is really our health that will ultimately define us. It is our health that allows us the ability to make the most of the personal circumstances we find ourselves in.

tension can contribute to musculoskeletal injuries. We need to pay more attention to the ‘health is wealth’ mantra and take time to reflect on how our lifestyle is impacting on our inside health, then take control by taking steps to change and improve it.

During the good times, our good health can help us reach our highest goals and achieve our dreams and ambitions. When we find ourselves in difficult times, sometimes challenging circumstances, our good health can help us be robust enough to withstand all that befalls us and get back on our feet. Health is the currency we use to navigate through the various circumstances we find ourselves in throughout our life.

As a Chartered Physiotherapist, I spend a lot of my time encouraging people to be more active. Regular exercise is one of the lifestyle choices that can have a profound effect on improving your health and wellbeing. Evidence suggests that physical activity boosts the natural production of serotonin (a feel-good chemical), not just during the activity but for hours after it. Serotonin is also used in antidepressants due to its positive effect on mood and wellbeing. Rather than take medication, you can produce it yourself just by exercising.

An online poll by YouGov this year worryingly found that in the past year, 74% of people have felt so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope. 46% responded that they had begun to eat too much or eat unhealthily due to stress, whilst others reported an increase in alcohol consumption. It is all too easy to get into a downward spiral with stress. When we feel stressed a hormone called cortisol is released by the body and if this happens too often, our body can no longer respond to stress and starts to feel fatigued. Stress can also exacerbate heart, respiratory and other underlying conditions. Even something as mild as increased muscle

Starting to become active can be daunting, especially if you haven’t done much exercise before or if you are managing a health condition. It is all too easy to stop moving when you have a health condition. Keeping moving is one of the most important aspects of managing long term health conditions, ranging from arthritis,

HEALTH IS WEALTH chronic pain through to conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or Parkinsons Disease (PD). If you have arthritis, it is okay to experience some pain, or even a slight increase in pain during and after exercise. As long as it settles back to pre-exercise levels within 24 hours, your activity level will be about right. If it lasts longer try reducing the level of exercise.

activity levels and do things at your own pace, monitoring your improvement over time. If you are in a wheelchair most of the day, move within your level of ability. This could be arm movements holding light weights, marching your legs up and down or bending and straightening your knees. It is sometimes useful to adopt a 24-hour approach to moving. Try to break up your day so you don’t stay in the same position for too long. This is particularly important if you are limited in your ability to move. Sometimes a change of position, such as lie down in bed to stretch out your legs, can be hugely beneficial to your wellbeing.

HEALTH IS WEALTH

The pain should also not be too severe or coincide with protracted swelling, heat, or redness of joints. You could try exercising in a pool initially where there is decreased weight bearing through your joints. You don’t have to be able to swim, just walking in the pool, doing some squats or marching will all help build muscle strength. You can then aim to do this on land once you feel stronger. If you have chronic (long-term) pain, focus on how your ability to do the activities changes rather than expecting the pain to reduce. Once again gradually increase your

With long term conditions you can have good and bad days. Monitor your activities based upon how you feel and don’t get overly concerned with the bad days, they will come and go. If you are unsure always talk it through with your GP or Physiotherapist. Exercise should be gradually introduced to allow your body to get used to the increased activity. Remember ‘Health is wealth’ so take time out of your schedule to pay attention to your body. Get moving, enable those natural feel good chemicals to flood your body and melt away your tension. They shall grow not old… Andy Thompson commemorates the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI ‘THE WAR That Will End War’ wrote the famous Surrey-based writer HG Wells in October 1914 as he reflected on the opening weeks of what was to become known as the Great War. The chiming bells at 11 o’clock on 11th November 1918 suggested his prescience to be very accurate. The First World War cost over 10 million young men their lives, 20 million were wounded and millions more traumatised and simply sent back to pick up the pieces of civilian life. Britain was bankrupt, the class system seriously eroded and, for a great many, any thought of a loving God became a difficult concept and the role of women in Britain was changed forever. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month this year the bells across the length and breadth of Britain will ring again to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the armistice that caused the guns to fall silent, ending the war that had engulfed the world with 89 countries being directly involved in the conflict. The 11th November is a Sunday this year and across Surrey and Sussex local communities will join the nation in remembering those who made the ‘supreme sacrifice’ for their country.

You only have to walk to your local war memorial to reflect on the men from your village or town who are remembered ‘In Perpetuity’ by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission at one of their 23,000 sites in 150 countries.

The men who returned to Surrey and Sussex after the war were promised ‘A Land Fit for Heroes’ but reality proved to be far harsher, as the collapse in the world economy led to hardship and widespread discontent. Wages were cut, the working week lengthened as war time contracts were ended. The millions of women who had responded to the call of ‘total war’ found themselves thrown out of work as the men returned. Whilst those over 30 and who owned property were given the vote in the Khaki election held in December 1918, most women returned to their role as homemakers and mothers. As with counties across the UK, the war brought out the best of the men and women of Surrey and Sussex. Thousands of men volunteered or were conscripted to fight for King and Country and joined their local regiments – The Queen’s (Royal West

THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD Surrey Regiment), The East Surreys or The Royal Sussex Regiment. All three regiments fought proudly with bravery and discipline fashioned in their distinguished histories. The East Surrey Regiment was deployed in August with the B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) and became part of the legendary ‘Old Contemptibles’ (so called when the British army was described as ‘a contemptible little army’ by Kaiser Wilhelm II). They fought in most of the major battles of the war. Seven of their number were awarded the Victoria Cross – the highest medal for ‘bravery in the face of the enemy’ and Captain Billy Neville entered the history books when he gave footballs to his attacking companies with a promise of a bottle of champagne for the first to get their ball into the German front line trench. As with 446 of his men, Captain Neville didn’t survive the first day of the Battle of the Somme. In total the regiment lost 6,223 officers and men killed during the war. The Queen’s list of Battle Honours is equally impressive with their involvement in the bitter fighting of the autumn of 1914, Loos in 1915, High Wood on the Somme, the taking of the Messines Ridge in June 1917 and the final 100 Days in 1918 which saw the German army driven out of France and Belgium. Their casualties impacted on the communities and families around Surrey. 7,399 officers and men being killed, and 4 Queen’s being awarded the VC.

The men of Sussex would have, in the main, joined The Royal Sussex, another regiment with a proud history. They too were deployed along the Western Front and served in the ill-fated attempt to defeat the Turks in Gallipoli during 1915. On 30th June 1916, the day before Haig launched his attack on the Somme, the men from Sussex led a diversionary attack on the Germans at The Boars Head. Commanded by Lieut Col Lowther they suffered appalling casualties with over 1000 of ‘Lowther’s Lambs’ being killed or wounded. The action became known as The Day Sussex Died. Undertones of War, the autobiography of Edmund Blunden, who fought with the regiment during most of the war, became a set text for those trying to

understand and comprehend the enormity of the slaughter. Whilst the men were fighting bravely in the front line, the women they left behind rose to the challenge of winning the war on the home front. Initially some became nurses whilst every village formed committees of women to make bandages and sandbags. By 1916 with the move towards 'total war', where every man or woman was directly or indirectly involved in the war effort, the women took to the plough by joining the Women’s Land Army to help feed the nation. Others moved into the factories manufacturing the weapons of war – the guns, ships, tanks and munitions to keep the men fighting. This work was dangerous and dirty – in January 1917 an explosion at the Silvertown munition factory in London killed 73 workers who were mainly women. The explosion damaged 70,000 houses and the bang was heard in Norwich and Salisbury! When the men came home, many women became untrained counsellors offering comfort and healing to the men damaged and ravaged by their experiences in the

On Sunday 11th November at 11 o’clock the nation will fall silent as collectively we pause for two minutes of reflection. In 1920, the body of the Unknown Warrior was returned from the battlefields of the Western Front and was received at the Cenotaph in Whitehall by King George V. He asked the committee organising the event that as the clock of Big Ben struck 11 the nation should fall silent for two minutes – the first minute to remember the dead and the past, the second to be thankful for those who had survived and the future. In 1920 the nation did indeed fall silent – trains, traffic and factories all stopped and the populace across the land stood still. We should do the same this year. FASHION Kirstie Smillie

The Shoe Fits You may have sorted the outfit but sometimes getting the right shoe is the hardest part, says personal stylist Kirstie Smillie. THERE ARE so many different lengths and widths to fashion these days that getting the right ratio of shoe to fabric can be challenging and variations depend on occasion, budget and comfort. Here are a few inspirational ideas but think proportion and cobbled high streets before you venture out.

The Wide Flare

The Slim Crop

The Wide Crop

The Loose Cut

The Slim Jean

The Midi Skirt

It’s chicest with a trainer style shoe, from street to smart, you can really choose your own level. Look for quirky details. Mint Velvet striped trainers, £89

The most flattering style is to add a heel to balance the oversized hemline and a slim fit ankle boot will keep you warmer too. Top Shop stretch ankle boots, £85

Moving on from the long boot over jeans, choose a short ankle boot; buckles add drama. Office buckled boots, £92

Choose heels for evening but for day wear, think French style with a loafer. Go classic or modern metallic. Reiss metallic loafers, £165

This boyish cut needs a sharp heel to balance. Patent or animal print work well here. Hobbs Grace court, £159

The long boot sits well with a fluid hem and adds warmth once the chill really hits. Slim fit ankle boots too for the more adventurous. Clarks dark tan boots, £155

Q&A How do I make a statement this season?

Animal print is a great way to stand out as it works as a neutral with all colours and shouts quiet attitude. Style Tip: one item of animal print per outfit works best. Inspiration: Dune snaffle trim loafer £80

What shoes are best for a fuller ankle?

Avoid ankle straps and choose an open front design that elongates down to your toes. Style Tip: Neutral shades and metallics flatter too. Inspiration: LK Bennett Corrina closed courts, £250

What are the best long boots for fuller calves?

Boots with elastic sections are most comfortable. Style Tip: Try with an asymmetric hemline for a softer silhouette. Inspiration: Clarks suede and elastic panel long boots, £155

I need some height, but prefer flats?

So choose a platform style loafer, a walkable ‘flatform’, we are not talking huge crepe styles, just an extra inch of sole. Top Tip: Use a little Vim to keep the sole white all winter. Inspiration: Dune Gessie loafers, £49 Check out the independent shoe retailers in our area for great service and less known brands: Cockerill Shoes 131 High Street Cranleigh GU6 8AU 01483 274402

Beat the itch this winter Zoe Blake takes a look at a common problem in house pets IT’S THAT time of year many pet owners fear, as the weather turns colder, the heating comes on, and the fleas appear. Did you know that the fleas on your pet represent only about 5% of the flea population? The other 95% sadly live in the environment that your pet spends its time in. To keep fleas at bay, it's important to understand the flea life cycle The life cycle comprises approximately eggs (50%), larvae (35%), pupae (10%), flea (5%). When fleas land on your pet they feed, breed and start to lay eggs. The eggs will drop into the environment, where they will hatch into larvae. Larvae don't like light so they will burrow away into carpets, bedding and floor cracks. They live off flea dirt and skin debris and then spin into a pupae. Here the flea develops before hatching out to find a host (you or your pet!). The pupae have a very tough coating which makes them robust to vacuuming and chemicals. When faced with the correct stimuli they will hop onto their host and so the cycle starts again. Vibration, CO2 and humidity are what fleas prefer, so turning the heating on and spending more time in the home is creating the perfect ambiance. Pupae have been known to remain in the environment for up to 2 years. So what should you do if your pet has fleas? If you use effective flea treatment on your pet, then it can take about 6 weeks to take effect. This is allowing for the various stages of the life cycle to complete and re-infest your pet. You need to back this up with regular vacuuming and washing of your pet's bedding.

22

V.

Godalming & Cranleigh

If you want to reduce this to about 3 weeks then an environment product will also be needed. Before using the household products, turn your heating up, place bowls of steamy water into each room and hoover. This will ensure that you can eradicate as much of the flea life cycle as possible. I recommend that you repeat this process in 10-14 days. The pupae is the most resistant of the cycle and so leaving some time gives the immature fleas time to develop in the pupae and allow them to be ready to hatch out at your next treatment. Eliminating fleas is about providing effective treatment correctly and safely. If you're having problems despite taking these measures then something could be wrong. Are your products effective? Are you following the correct instructions? Having a flea infestation can bring misery to many pet owning families and also bring skin conditions with it. So don’t delay, get rid of those fleas today. FIND OUT MORE Zoe Blake is a registered veterinary nurse and runs The Friendly Pet Nurse. The Waverley BIG Awards were open to organisations of all sizes as well as social enterprises. The award categories and judging criteria were designed to give start-ups the same chance of winning as their larger cousins. Godalming & Cranleigh

President’s BIG Awards Each Chamber of Commerce presented an award to an organisation from within their catchment area. The judging criteria was the same for all four Chambers. They were looking to reward and recognise a well-rounded organisation which struck a balance between delighting customers, engaging and developing employees, innovation and social/community partnership. Waverley BIG Award for Community Partnership They were looking for that organisation whose business ethic includes giving back via the partnerships they have formed with the council and their community. Waverley BIG Awards for Innovation Innovation can come in lots of different guises. It could be a new product, a new service, a new process, technology or something the committee had never thought of! WAVERLEY BIG AWARD WINNERS Waverley BIG Award for Customer Delight We were looking for businesses with a reputation for ‘delighting their customers', either with the quality of the customer service, or the quality of the product(s) they sold that delighted their customers, either in person or online – or both. Waverley BIG Award for Employee Engagement, Education & Empowerment According to Gallup global averages only 13% of employees are engaged. So we were looking for companies that engage, educate and empower their workforce. The Awards On Friday 19th October, a Gala Ceremony at the Lythe Hill Hotel was attended by 200 sponsors, finalists and guests who watched throughout the evening a series of short videos of each of the 24 finalists. With bated breath, each category winner was announced and awarded a fabulous glass trophy, champagne and certificate. Each finalist also received smaller trophies, champagne and certificates ensuring that every finalist felt like a winner! The four Chambers of Commerce from Cranleigh, Farnham, Godalming and Haslemere have been working together as Waverley Joint Chambers of Commerce in partnership with Waverley Borough Council to develop the awards. Their shared aim is to encourage businesses to locate here, to retain local companies and help them grow, to promote Waverley as ‘the’ place to do business south of London and to market the many skilled employment opportunities on our residents’ doorsteps. Designed ‘by local businesses, for local businesses’ the awards recognise, promote and celebrate the achievements of the innovative and entrepreneurial business community in Waverley. Waverley Borough Council’s Economic Portfolio Holder, Cllr Jim Edwards, said "Waverley Borough Council is delighted to be principal sponsor for the first ever Waverley BIG awards. Local businesses play a key part in our community, supporting the local economy, providing jobs and adding to the attractiveness of the borough". The Waverley BIG Awards 2018 are also generously sponsored by Dunsfold Park, Edwards Greene Accountants, Downs Solicitors, Blink, Taybridge Consulting, SI Capital, Cornmeter, Blue Dot Display, PAAC IT, Marley Flowers, The Remarkable Studio, Angus Lyon Action Coach, Lythe Hill Hotel, Surrey County Council, Farnham and Haslemere Town Councils. GARDENING Beth Otway

Fabulous Phalaenopsis! Phalaenopsis plants are such a blessing; they’re always at our side, bringing elegance to our living rooms, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Phalaenopsis can be so floriferous; they flower whatever the weather or season, and can bloom continuously for a year or more at a time. These glamorous plants enhance any home, from chic apartments to country estates. I first saw Phalaenopsis ‘Sunny Smell’ at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year 2016 stand at Chelsea. In the cool temperatures that day I could not detect any fragrance from this orchid’s sunset yellow blooms, but now that I have my own plant, I can enjoy the fragrance of this Phalaenopsis. It’s a warm perfume, which has been enjoyed by my visitors. Another AGM Phalaenopsis that I have particularly enjoyed getting to know, is Phalaenopsis ‘New Life’. This is a truly delightful Phalaenopsis. ‘New Life’ produces ivory flowers, which are delicately infused with a soft dusky pink. The overall look of the plant is very romantic and ethereal, it has a rather soothing quality. The centre of each bloom is quite charmingly freckled and the overall look is divine! Phalaenopsis ‘New Life’ produces a light, floral scent, these orchids are most fragrant in the mornings. THIS YEAR, I’ve enjoyed getting to know a couple of new Phalaenopsis hybrids. These plants were grown in the UK by Double H Nurseries, and they’re part of the nurseries’ new range of Phalaenopsis plants, which have all been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. The Award of Garden Merit (AGM) was set up by the Royal Horticultural Society, to help gardeners find plants that will perform well in regular growing conditions, without any specialist care or attention. Plants that receive this accolade are reliable plants, that are reasonably disease-resistant and free -flowering. If you’re looking at a selection of plants and aren’t sure which one to choose, an AGM plant is a plant you can purchase knowing that particular plant has been trialled and tested and will perform well given the appropriate conditions. You’ll find AGM plants at your nursery, or garden centre, and online. These plants display the RHS AGM trophy symbol.

28

V.

Godalming & Cranleigh

If you’d like to grow these scented Phalaenopsis plants for yourself, you’ll find the full range of Double H Nurseries’ AGM Phalaenopsis plants sold in Waitrose and Marks and Spencer: look out for the British flag and the RHS AGM logo when purchasing your plants. Tesco and Sainsbury’s now stock Phalaenopsis plants grown at Double H Nurseries, but not plants from this AGM range. When choosing plants, look out for Phalaenopsis plants that display the British flag to ensure you purchase plants grown at Double H Nurseries in New Milton.

TRAVEL ADVERTORIAL

GRENADA Enjoy a visit to one of the lesser known islands in the Caribbean, says your local Personal Holiday Planning Concierge service, Tony Chant from Not Just Travel. IN THIS issue we share some of what we learnt on our recent visit to this beautiful island. Grenada is the ‘spice island’ of the Caribbean, so named because of its production of Nutmeg and Mace and is a truly unspoilt Caribbean experience waiting to welcome you. This lovely island has one of the most spectacular beaches in the whole of the Caribbean. Grand Anse Beach on the west coastline is 2kms of powdery white sand and home to some of the finest beach resorts on the island. A beach of this size ensures that you can always find a private spot to soak up the rays throughout the day until the evening comes, when you can enjoy the most beautiful of Caribbean sunsets. Grenada is more than just a beach destination, touring the island you can enjoy the majestic St Margaret Falls, Concord Falls and Seven Sisters Falls. The capital of St George on the south-west coast is a colourful, picturesque harbour and a hub of trade and tourism, fringed with historical buildings, businesses and waterside dining. North of St George in Molinere you will find the Underwater Sculpture Park, a collection of ecological contemporary art created by British sculptor, Jason Decaires Taylor in 2006; a must for snorkelling and diving fans. Of the many Forts on the island, Fort Frederick, completed in 1791 commands the most breath-taking view of the inland mountains, the steepled St George skyline and extensive portions of the southern and western coastlines.

Book in November when we are offering VantagePoint readers free Lounge Passes* with every booking made for this month only. We believe that this offer combined with the competitive prices we achieve through our buying power will give you ‘the holiday experience you will remember for all the right reasons. We are also now posting some exclusive special holiday offers for VantagePoint readers on the VantagePoint website and in the VantagePoint e-newsletter so make sure you look out for these. 450g/1lb lean braising or topside steak, cubed, 5ml/1tsp fennel seeds, 5ml/1tsp ground coriander, 2 sprigs fresh thyme, 1 garlic clove, peeled and finely chopped, 2 small onions, peeled and sliced, 2 carrots, peeled and roughly chopped, 50g/2oz dried apricots, chopped, 50ml/2floz orange juice, 2 sticks celery, roughly chopped, 100ml/3½floz red wine, 30ml/2tbsp red wine vinegar, 30ml/2tbsp oil, 30ml/2tbsp plain flour, 15ml/1tbsp tomato puree, optional, 800ml/1½pint beef stock, 175g/6oz button mushrooms.

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 4-5, 180-190°C, 350375°F 2. In a large bowl mix together the beef, fennel seeds, coriander, thyme, garlic, onions, carrots, apricots, orange juice, celery, red wine, red wine vinegar and seasoning. Cover the marinade and if possible leave in the refrigerator for 2 hours or overnight. 4. Drain the marinade mixture and reserve. Heat the oil in a medium-sized casserole or ovenproof dish and brown the meat with the vegetables in batches. Stir in the flour, reserved marinade, tomato puree, beef stock, and bring to the boil. Add the button mushrooms, halved, if preferred. 5. Transfer to the oven and cook for 1½-2 hours, stirring occasionally, or until the meat is tender.

Ingredients:

2 tsp olive oil, 50g chopped chorizo, 1 onion, sliced, 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into thin strips, 4 pork loin steaks, 2 tsp smoked paprika, 400g can chopped tomatoes, 400g can butter beans, drained and rinsed, 150ml hot vegetable or chicken stock, salt and freshly ground black pepper, 2 tbsp freshly chopped flat-leaf parsley.

Method:

1. Heat the oil, in a non-stick frying or sauté pan with a lid, over a medium heat. Add the chorizo, onion and red pepper and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chorizo has released its oil and the onion and pepper have softened. Remove from the pan to a plate and set aside. 2. Add the pork steaks to the pan and cook for three minutes on one side, then turn over, and cook for 2 minutes. Return the chorizo and pepper mixture to the pan and stir in the paprika. 3. Stir in the tomatoes, butter beans and stock. Bring to a simmer, then cover the pan with a lid and simmer for 5 minutes, until the steaks are cooked through and the juices run clear.

6. Serve with herb mash and spring greens.

4. Season to taste and sprinkle with the parsley. Divide between 4 plates and serve with green vegetables.

WEEKEND WALK

Aldershot and the Basingstoke Canal This is a walk of great variety, combining pine woods, an oak wood, a great sandy wilderness and a canal towpath. The route goes over the huge wild Aldershot sand hills and pine forests. This is Defence land but if there are no live exercises, families, children and dogs are always welcome. Humph and I very much enjoyed it in June of this year. Before you do this walk, check that there is pedestrian access to Rushmoor Road. There is some uncertainty about the small pedestrian access which is locked at night and should be opened each morning, except for some military or ceremonial reason. Sometimes the main gate is open; sometimes walkers and cyclists have to climb over because both gates are locked. We’re trying to get definitive guidelines from the MoD. Do not do this walk during the Farnborough Airshow because some paths and especially Rushmoor Road at the start will be closed off. This walk is taken with permission from www.fancyfreewalks.org. SR 1. From the Duke's Wood car park, go out to the road, turn left and, in 50m, turn right on Rushmoor Road. (Rushmoor Road is closed to motor traffic: your access is through a pedestrian gate on the left of the large metal gates.) After 500m through forest, just after a left bend, you see a metal barrier on your right, just before a bridge over a track. Turn right here down a slope to arrive at a junction of paths. Avoid the first path on your left, continue another 25m to cross a narrow stream (the Claycart Stream) and turn left on a narrow path which runs beside the stream on your left. 2. The path is muddy at first but quickly improves. In nearly 100m your path goes over a crossing path. In another 200m your path reaches a crossing track. Go straight over, still following the Claycart Stream but this time with it on your right. If you hear a din of engines nearby on your left, this is from the Aldershot Raceway where hotrods compete in the Caravan Destruction Derby and other delights. As you continue through this beautiful oakwood, the stream on your right sinks into a deep cleft. Finally, 400m from the last crossing, you meet a narrow path on your right where the stream runs over a concrete channel and cascades down. 3. Turn right here over the channel, to come out in 50m onto the open sandy moor. Turn left on a The Walk 8

wide surfaced track. In 250m, you reach a major 3-way junction. Turn sharp right on a wide path which curves left uphill. Keep going for 650m on this undulating path to pass a large pinewood on the right of your path with a track running through it. Continue past the pinewood, out into the open again, for another 80m. Here the wide path forks. Take the right fork, a wide sandy path which branches off diagonally. 4. Your course is now fairly straight for 1m. In 150m your path runs beside a pinewood on your right, enters the wood and emerges again in 150m. It winds left and right and comes out of the dark woods up into an open space where a path joins you from the left. The path descends gradually, reenters woodland and arrives at a metal barrier with a warning notice about the Test Track ahead which is used to test military hardware. Shortly after the notice, a wide track merges with your path from the right and your path ahead forks. Keep to the left fork here. (The right fork could be used by military vehicles although they are very rarely seen anywhere, even by regular walkers). In 300m, your path goes through a metal kissing-gate next to an animal grid. Just 30m further, turn left through a metal kissing-gate. 5. In 100m, your wide path bends left and passes a little pond on the right (which may be dry). 40m after the pond, turn right on a clear path through gorse bushes. Keep following this undulating and winding path with a hillock on your left, avoiding side turnings, heading towards the pinewoods and the possible sound of traffic on the main road. Your path curves left to meet a crossing path. Here turn right on a narrow path, thus leaving your previous path which continues upwards over the heath with the hillock on the left. Your new path keeps you in the same direction as before, down a small dip. Note that it is very narrow. (This area has been cleared of gorse bushes and you may still see the remaining stumps). The path goes past some pines and takes you through a swing-gate (sometimes awash: please help by dropping a brick or a log!). Cross straight over a wide grassy strip onto a very narrow path into the trees opposite. Keep to this winding path, through hollies, leading up to a car

park of the Foresters pub/restaurant. Cross over into the pub’s main car park. 6. After a possible break for refreshment, go to the back of the pub’s car park and turn left through a metal kissing gate. Turn sharp right and follow a path which runs outside the back of the pub’s garden. The path runs down to a T-junction. Turn right, going through a gate beside an animal grid, to arrive at the Aldershot Road car park (alternative start). 7. Turn left just before the car park on a wide straight path, going through a gate beside an animal grid after 40m. Immediately after the grid, turn left on a wide straight path. Follow this woodland path for most of a km to its end where you can hear a main road close by. Ignore the path where it bends left and instead keep ahead through a large kissing gate to arrive shortly at a side road (Valmead Road). Turn left on the road and quickly turn right between bollards over a canal bridge. After the bridge, turn sharp right to join the canal towpath, going under the road (mind your head!). 8. You will be following the canal on your right for a total of 3½ km, with the main roads far enough

away to your right to allow you a long period of peaceful walking. In 1km you pass under two carriages of a main road. The trees change to thin birch and the terrain opens out as you become aware of Farnborough Airfield close by on your left. The next bridge is the Eelmoor Bridge, a black girder bridge, which has a small car park. Continue along the towpath, now in quiet woodland once more. After 1km, you see a second black girder bridge. Fork left to turn right over the bridge. On your right is one of the gates into Duke’s Wood: worth a look for its wooden sculpture, bridges and nature trails. In a minute you are back at the car park where the walk began.

DISTANCE: 6 miles OS MAPS: OS Explorer 145 (Guildford). DIRECTIONS: From Farnham, take the A325 towards Aldershot. Go straight on at each roundabout or junction, passing the Royal Arms, after 1½ miles. Continuing over a small roundabout and, ⅔ mile later, straight over a large roundabout. After ⅔ mile, at the corner of the Potters International Hotel (postcode GU11 2ET), turn left at a sign for Fleet A323. At the end, turn left on a major road and immediately stay on the road as it elbows right. The car park is ⅔ mile on the right: it is not marked. It is also reported that sales of Prosecco have dropped in part because more people are buying English sparkling wine; good news I say. Earlier this year we visited Albury Vineyard and had a lovely tour around the vineyard followed by a superb wine tasting. Their wines are delicious, not the cheapest but real quality. This autumn, they are organising a number of tours and tastings. Their cosy vineyard barn is the perfect retreat for their friendly team to take you through a tasting of their three award-winning sparkling wines, as well as a 'guest' English wine. Once you've decided on a favourite, sit back with a glass of your choice accompanied by a selection of English cheese. Admire views from the barn over the vineyard, or venture outside for a walk amongst the vines and enjoy their new self-guided tour of the vineyard. Various dates between October and December are available, and booking is essential via www. alburyvineyard.com. Fairtrade Days in Godalming Friday 9th and Saturday 10th November 11am–4pm The most effective way of helping the poorest of the poor – and, relatively speaking, that’s got to be overseas – is through ‘Fairtrade’; helping people, particularly poor small-scale producers, to trade-out of their own poverty. That means ensuring that they get a fair price for whatever they produce, e.g. coffee, tea, sugar, chocolate, wine, and loads more. In supermarkets, the Fairtrade Mark can be found on quite a few items; however, these two special pre-Christmas Fairtrade Days are dedicated to selling some of the 4,500 Fairtrade items which most directly help to alleviate pressure on poor communities around the world. They are being held at 3 Braemar Close, Godalming (first turn on the right coming up to top of Holloway Hill). There is also a simple lunch (12.30pm2pm) with donation for Christian Aid. Do and try and pop in and support this very worthy cause. Julian Lewry Music Throughout November Julian has been busy and has organised an unprecedented number of gigs during November. Elizabeth Finn comes to Haslemere

You may not have heard of Elizabeth Finn before, but her former home in London is commemorated by an English Heritage Blue Plaque. Why? At the age of 72, this visionary lady decided to make a stand against poverty, rife in Victorian times, and founded the Distressed Gentlefolks’ Aid Association, a wonderfully old-fashioned term today. Over the years the name of the charity has changed, finally to Turn2us, but its aims remain today as they were 120 years ago, to help those living in poverty. Elizabeth Finn Homes Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the charity, operates a group of nine awardwinning care homes across England providing personal and nursing care. Although the Homes are run on a commercial basis, any operating surplus at the end of the financial year passes to Turn2us to support its work – how brilliant is that? The tenth home in the Elizabeth Finn Group will open in Haslemere in the autumn, on the site of the former Wispers School. Along with all other Elizabeth Finn Homes, Oak Hall will focus on providing industry-leading personalised care, with first-rate facilities and equipment throughout. Oak Hall has four categories of room ranging from standard to suites, suitable for a couple. All are light, airy and have ensuite wet-room facilities; all have restful colour-schemes with high quality softfurnishings. There are also assisted-bathrooms available and the floors are serviced by three lifts. The dining experience will be to the same exceptional standard as the care provided, with restaurant-style dining from a changing menu

utilising fresh, seasonal ingredients. The impressive reception areas in the Home are complimented by the adjoining Country Club, complete with a bistro, fully licensed bar and a coffee area. The residents of the retirement village in the grounds of Oak Hall are welcome to use these facilities. Oak Hall will offer a range of care options: residential, full nursing care, respite, convalescence and specialist palliative care. We employ the best in order to provide the best care and will have high ratios of staff to residents. We believe that quality of life is as important as quality of care, and our social engagement team will liaise with residents to establish their interests in order to develop engagement opportunities tailored to the individual. Oak Hall will have an enlightened, innovative approach to care of the elderly with the holistic needs of our residents firmly at the centre of everything we do. As autumn approaches, all the team at Oak Hall are focussed on ensuring that everyone and everything will be ready to do precisely that. If you would like to find out more about life at Oak Hall please contact: Karen Williams, General Manager Oak Hall Nursing Home, Wispers Lane, Haslemere, GU27 1AB.
