THE EDITOR'S NOTE As you will see on page 8, we are celebrating 10 years of publishing local community magazines this month. Our first ever magazine was delivered week commencing 30th March 2009 to just 16,487 homes in the Godalming area. Looking back at that edition, it is pleasing to note that eight of the advertisers are still advertising with us ten years later. In fact, two of them have never missed a single month in all that time, so take a bow Cornmeter (Church Street, Godalming) and Milford Window Company – and thanks for your very loyal support! With Easter falling towards the end of April, I read that it is possible for most people to take an 18 day holiday yet only take nine days off work by taking advantage of the three bank holidays and weekends. It’s the perfect time to take in a long-distance holiday, with the added advantage of returning in May to take advantage of what we are being told might be the hottest summer on record. Mind you, we have heard that before… For once, I have all my holidays planned already. A few days skiing just after this edition goes to press will be followed in June by something very different a week’s cruise in the Med. I am a bit trepidatious at the prospect of ‘cabin fever’ but the boat will stop and there is a great deal to do (and eat) on board, so while I may put on weight, hopefully I won’t get bored! Later in the year, a city break to Riga in Latvia is in prospect, another first. According to the Lonely Plant guide, “it is quiet and reserved on the outside, but there is some powerful chemistry going on inside its hip bars, modern art centres and the kitchens of its cool experimental restaurants”. Sounds good to me. By coincidence, Humphrey is half Latvian as his mum (and her owners) originated from there before coming to Surrey. Sadly he is not allowed on either of these trips but subject to Brexit shenanigans, he will be with me on the annual trip to the French house in August, where the swimming pool and left-over cheese rinds will offer him a most perfect fortnight…

The local magazine produced by local people for the local community

antage Publishing was set up in 2009 with the sole purpose of producing a brand new free community magazine for the Godalming

Its founder, Stefan Reynolds, had the idea after being involved in a government sponsored market town appraisal, which had found that there was a need “to improve the availability of information to residents and visitors”. This confirmed his view that there was no easy way for local people to find out about all the community events taking place. Having lived in the town since 1973 and with a background in publishing, Stefan decided to leave his job and embark on a new career in local magazine publishing. The first magazine was published in April 2009, and was delivered for free by the Royal Mail to 16,487 homes in the Godalming area. It was well received as it uniquely concentrated on the local area, with charity news, community and events information as well as articles written by and for local people. “Cornmeter started advertising with Vantage Publishing in their first magazine in April 2009 and we have advertised with them every single month since. We always get a great response and I love the fact that we almost always see the magazine in every house we visit when fitting blinds and curtains.” John Taylor, Cornmeter DIY In July 2009, Marcus Atkins joined as a partner to look after the sales side of the business and in October 2009, a second magazine was launched covering the Farnham area, adding a further 21,331 local homes. A Haslemere edition followed in June 2010 followed by a Guildford issue in April 2011. Cranleigh was added to the Godalming issue in August 2011, bringing the circulation up to 79,362 - a near five-fold increase since it launched. The biggest change happened in January 2014 when the magazines were re-branded and VantagePoint was launched. At that point, Midhurst and Petworth were added to the Haslemere issue and in April 2014 the Dorking issue was launched. In October 2016, East & West Horsley joined the Guildford issue and Leatherhead was added to the Dorking issue, taking the total circulation to more than 120,500 copies every month.

In addition, we have just over 19,000 e-newsletter subscribers and also promote our customers and community events via various social media channels. The company is based in Godalming, right in the middle of the VantagePoint circulation area, enabling easy interaction with local businesses, charities and organisations. It helps to be in the heart of the local community as this gives the business and staff a much better understanding of what goes on around them. “'I met Marcus Atkins at a networking event seven years ago. I did not have much faith in advertising, but Marcus persuaded me to advertise with VantagePoint. I am very glad that I did. It has been brilliant for my business and I have found the staff at VantagePoint unfailingly helpful and efficient.” Susan Shaw, Shaws Wills and Trusts All those who work for and with us are based locally, many of them having lived in the area for more than 40 years. Nick and Angie Crisell, Marcus's in-laws, have been with us since we started as our original Jotters, and Jane Gosnell started in 2016 to help with Jottings and credit control. On the sales side, we have Jesse, Claire and our latest recruit Sarah, and Alex was recently appointed to work on graphic design and social media. David Pakeman joined us in 2016 as a nonexecutive director and Marcus's wife Sarah does bulk deliveries for us every month to various places across the region, including libraries, cafés and surgeries. We are also very grateful to our regular contributors including Phil Kemp, Beth Otway, Kirstie Smillie, Andy Goundry and Zoe Blake. Since starting in 2009, the ethos of the business has been to support everything local. Through the Jottings section, which appears in each magazine, well over 350 local charities, community groups, organisations and schools have their events promoted free of charge every month. The majority of advertisers continue to be local, as are the contributors and writers. Supporting a local business supports the local community, and we were very proud to receive the Trade Mark Surrey Hills last year for our services doing just that. Here's to the next 10 years!

FASHION Kirstie Smillie

Pack it in! What and how to pack for a spring city break, by personal fashion advisor Kirstie Smillie Who doesn’t love a weekend away? A few days to unwind and forget the mundane chores at home and in my case, the bathroom that needs a paint job! Excitement rises as I think of the breakfast bar but then mild panic sets in at the thought of packing and getting it right. As a family we have made some real clangers at the Check In and even later upon reaching the security conveyor belt. As a toddler, my daughter had decided to slip in my hefty cutting scissors into her own little case, causing a bit of a stir and loss of my trusty tool, so I now try and be far more organised.

Packing smart Step one… suitcase allowances vary from airline to airline and keep changing. For instance: For hand luggage, Thomas Cook states measurements of no bigger than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm plus one other item on their list, like a handbag, laptop or overcoat. British Airways offer the largest size and weight allowances, whereas EasyJet are generous in size but everything has to fit in your case, unless you want to pay a fee of £37 or even £47 if you leave it until the boarding gate. I remember having to squeeze my handbag into an already bulging case, which was very stressful and embarrassingly uncool!

Hand luggage Allowances 2019 / Economy EasyJet Case: 56cm x 45cm x 25cm No weight restrictions No other hand luggage British Airways Case: 56cm x 45cm x 25cm Maximum weight 23kg Plus one small item Thomas Cook Case: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm Maximum weight 6kg Plus one small item

How to pack Lay your items out on your bed and then reduce by a third. For a weekend trip avoid taking the ‘just in case’ options. Arrange outfit ideas with accessories needed for each look and take a snapshot to remember. Fold and Roll - no, not an exercise move but a packing suggestion for items like T-shirts, sweatshirts and jumpers which means you can fit them around the edges of your case. Smarter items, like cotton shirts, trousers and jeans are better folded around each other to help avoid creasing - known as the ‘bundle technique’. For those who like more separation, Lakeland’s Packing Organisers offer a simple solution inside your case at £20.99 for three (right). Belts are better unrolled and slipped in around the perimeter of the case. Well before travelling, start collecting trial and sample sizes as it’s often the wash bag that just won’t fit! Remember the maximum 100ml liquid rule too, inside one small plastic bag per person to avoid dumping new products, which is never a great start to a holiday.

V. What to pack Check the weather forecast for the time of year you are visiting - how likely is a rain cloud - is an umbrella a must or will a rainproof jacket be enough for light showers? A capsule collection is key to travelling light, one colour palette that means you can make more outfits out of a few items. Scarves are a space-saving item to make the changes and pop of colour. A selection of tops will make more impact than lots of bottom halves - whereas a couple of pairs of dark trousers or jeans are useful for day and into the evening. Comfy footwear is an essential, of course, but make sure they are tried and tested, not brand new and likely to cause blisters! A small cross over bag will not only be a safer option but it distributes the weight for all-day sightseeing, just reduce what you need each day to small bag necessities. A lightweight cosy sweater is a useful layer for cooler mornings, rolled into a scarf for breakfast chill, through jeans loops for afternoon strolls and then diagonally across the body for early evening cocktails. A waterproof lined pouch like this one from Oliver Bonas, £24, is great to transport make-up and becomes a cheeky clutch on a night out. For comfortable feet inside trainers, I love Ecco bamboo footsies, £7.99, breathable and dry all day. One lightweight overcoat should be enough for smarter day and into evenings, something like a trench coat that layers over a denim jacket too. Remember a dress can be a perfect day-into-evening item, dressed down with trainers and a denim jacket for day and a metallic belt and ankle boots added for evening. One or two statement pieces of jewellery will add a simple change; go bold with these raffia drops from Oliver Bonas, £19.50 Images: Easy pieces for day to evening, Pinterest.com Bag and earrings, Oliver Bonas, The Friary, Guildford 01483 300615 Footsies: Ecco, 41 High Street, Guildford 01483 306369

Top tips * The simple sock can be used to ‘bag up’ cables and adaptors. * Fill shoes with rolled socks/ underwear and use to protect sunglasses. * Avoid easy creasing fabrics that will need ironing on arrival. * Add your contact details, visible inside the bag and tagged outside. * Wear larger items like ankle boots or trainers and pack the slip-ons. * If in doubt, double-wrap your toiletries to avoid a mess on arrival. * A cotton bag is useful for storing ‘to be washed on return’ items. * Remember, to reduce your makeup bag, take out Christmas sparkles. * Keep your medicines in a separate easy to reach plastic bag. * Try and leave a little breathing space for purchases made.

“If you would like some help packing for a romantic weekend or longer summer break, I offer a Perfect Packing session to take your stress away. I will photograph your outfits and make sure you only pack what you need so you can concentrate on enjoying your holiday.”

Health Spas Top left: Grayshott Health Spa. Top right and above: The Coach House

Health Spas provide a lot more than just a way of pampering yourself, as Phil Kemp was to discover.

I

have always thought of myself as being healthconscious, although perhaps not particularly effective at implementing a beneficial routine to guarantee I’m as fit as I should be, both physically and mentally. We are bombarded by a huge choice of options to improve our well-being through exercise, diet, lifestyle as well as mindfulness. But how to make sense of it all? Initially the suggestion that I should visit health spas for me brought up an image of simply being pampered in luxurious surroundings, but in reality what spas offer is far more sophisticated than this - and really did give me a sense of what you can do to improve well-being. The first of two health spas I visited was The Coach House in Leatherhead. Set in the 400-acre estate of Beaverbrook House, once the home of the newspaper publisher Lord Beaverbrook, the newly-opened spa has transformed the building that once housed horses and coaches, and of course in its day the Rolls-Royces. Rene van Eyssen, the spa’s director, was to give me a fascinating introduction into what the spa provides for its members – as well as explaining the thinking behind the stunning decorative décor. “What you find when you walk through is this beautiful artwork of Brian Clarke, who is one of the world’s leading stained glass artists,” explained

12

V.

Farnham & Villages

Rene as she pointed up to the striking glass ceiling of the reception area. “The whole ethos of The Coach House is rooted in nature, and how nature can optimise our well-being and general wellness. So this beautiful stained glass represents nature with these oak leaves and blue sky filling the space with a vibrant light even on a glum day.” On our way to the treatment rooms we stopped by the spa shop and boutique where Rene explained how much emphasis is placed on herbal apothecary and the use of natural and organic treatments, with some using plants grown on the estate. “We have created our very own Coach House oils which we use in treatments such as our relaxing massage, therapeutic massage and biodynamic massage.” Perhaps noticing my bemused look on the latter Rene smiled, adding: “This goes beyond just treating your muscular and soft tissue. Our therapists look at structure, with treatment going deeper

HEALTH SPAS into the energy flows of the body. And they can even go into cranial sacral work as well.” As we toured the four treatment rooms, Clarke’s beautiful glass, tilework and mosaics really did bring a vibrant energy into the spaces around it. “Each of the rooms has its own signature energy with coloured light from the ceiling, and here you can see a mosaic of daffodils. The rooms are spacious and really help the therapists with their healing, energising and regeneration treatments.” Rene explained that she is herself a qualified cranial sacral therapist, and you could feel the energy she brings to the overall day-to-day operation of the spa. “Here we have our thermal spa, sauna and steam room which enable you to get rid of toxins post-exercise, and also to relax and soften up your muscles. We also have a traditional English bathhouse where we remove old layers of skin with our black soap, and also stimulate to help the metabolism of your skin and detoxify your body.” The spa also has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, with spa members enjoying the lovely 29° temperature, wicker furniture poolside and beautiful cornflower design wall tiles of the indoor pool. We walked past the manicure and pedicure lounge and headed towards the gym where I was to be totally intrigued by one of their workouts.

In the spacious well-equipped gym I was introduced to instructor Ali Shah who described their ‘functional movement’ sessions. “I trained with the Animal Flow programme, which is quite new to the UK,” Ali explained. “Basically, you mimic animal movements in a functional way which impacts core, joints and stability. So we can do stretches that mimic holds used in the wild, for example by cheetahs and crocodiles. It combines quadrupedal and ground-based movements with your standard workouts. I tailor this to individual capability and get amazing feedback!” Grayshott Health Spa, which has for the last two years been awarded ‘England’s Best Wellness Retreat’, also takes advantage of a spacious country house and its 47 acres of gardens - and which was once the home of Victorian Poet Laureate, Lord Tennyson. My guide was the spa’s marketing director Tina Laing. “We have three different types of guests. Day guests who come for the spa treatments; overnight stayers who have prescriptive treatments for health reasons; and members who come largely from the local area. You may have noticed the house’s original and today very apt inscription over the front door: ‘Pax Intrantibus’? This translates in effect as ‘Peace on Arrival’ to which we can add ‘Health on Departure’. And we preserve the very peaceful ambience here by not allowing groups of more than six to keep the noise down, and we discourage use of mobile phones.” Walking from reception, with its huge lampshade hanging from the grand entrance hall ceiling, we head towards the spa. “We offer everything from

classic massages and facials to EFT tapping counselling, physiotherapy and sound healing,” explained Tina. “A lot of our therapists have been here for over 20 years and many of our clientele have been coming back over decades as they like to see our familiar staff. It’s a very warm and comforting place – and our regulars don’t let go of the place!” We push open heart-shaped doors to enter the fitness studio. “Here you can do everything from aerobics and stretching movement to yoga, Tai Chi and Zumba, and we have over 40 classes a week.” In the adjacent gym there were a number of people clearly enjoying an energetic session on running machines. Seeing my obvious look of discomfort mixed with guilt at my clear lack of gym experience, Tina added supportively: “We also offer one-to-one training in our personal training room if you prefer!” Grayshott Spa also has indoor and outdoor swimming April 2019

pools, and a nine-hole golf course and tennis courts where members can take advantage of coaching, including group sessions. Tina pointed across the gardens. “We are adjacent to National Trust land and we provide guided walks at three different levels – a gentle walk, a normal intermediate walk, and power walks that are the most powerful cardio classes we do with participants who will have been assessed in advance by our personal trainer.” In the spa area I was introduced to Sharon Wood, who co-ordinates treatments, and she gave an overview of the extensive range of treatments on offer. I was particularly intrigued by the sound healing Tina had mentioned earlier. “This is one of our newest therapeutic treatments monitoring how your body reacts when vibrations from musical instuments are applied.” Other intriguing treatments were described, including HeartMath which reduces stress, lymphatic massage for improving digestive health, facial movement exercises by celebrity facialist Su-Man Hsu, and body composition analysis, which scans for visceral fat so an analyst can advise on dietary improvements and fitness regimes. Tina explained that many of these treatments are part of current plans to upgrade officially to a medical spa. “It’s all about physical, mental and spiritual well being and the journey you can go on here is through our expert advice, our lectures, our dietary health food - and with recommendations on what people need to do to maintain a healthy life.” For me personally, my visits to these two spas really drove home the benefits of actively caring for your mental and physical wellbeing – and doing this in a caring and relaxing environment with expert advice and tailor-made treatments is without doubt the most effective way of achieving this. AppArt attracts artists from Farnham and surrounding districts

F

arnham artists will feature strongly in AppArt’s Easter Art Exhibition and Sculpture Trail at Prior’s Field School, Godalming. AppArt was founded by Evelyn & Gwyn Phillips and is now in its 6th year at Prior’s Field School and continues to attract artists and art enthusiasts from far and wide. This year internationallycelebrated Surrey artist Alexander Creswell will open the exhibition and Sculpture Trail on Saturday 6th April. Alexander Creswell is known for his extraordinary fluency and technical skill in watercolour. His ground-breaking ‘grand scale’ watercolours are some of the largest ever painted. He was the first artist ever to paint scenes at Westminster Abbey. Glenys Ambrus works mainly in oils or pastels and in a figurative style. She enjoys painting all subjects; portraits, gardens and still life. Her 'Still Life with Anemones' shows her skill and delight in the use of colour. Another artist that exploits a full colour palette is mosaic sculptor Denise Jacques. In her detailed work she forms all sorts of shapes and creates movement and 'Swoosh' is a colour explosion of her art. Marie Ellis's appreciation of nature shows through in her acrylic and ink paintings. 'Oystercatchers' is a vivid example of her technique. Penny Fleet’s recent work also features birds and 'Kingfisher Blues' is one of her collage creations. Kit Bowles is mainly a figurative artist “whose preferred medium is oil paint, as she loves its flexibility and the pigments have a depth of colour that is exciting". 'Winter Clementines' is an attractive study that illustrates this. Jane Chadbon is a “fine artist” and her watercolour painting 'Fritillaries and eggs' is a delicate still life. Georgina Rey likes painting in quiet remote places and enjoys

the solitude this allows. In 'Sazanna Tuscany' she captures the landscape in her subtle use of colours in oil. Jane Webley is a member of the Farnham West Street Potters and uses raku firing to create intricate ammonites such as 'Turquoise Ammonite'. Allan Wallis continues to produce humorous animal sculptures and this year he has returned to one of his favourite subjects 'Moon Gazing Hares'. AppArt has an indoor exhibition with approximately 500 artworks and outside in the Gertrude Jekyll inspired garden, there will be a trail of over 100 sculptures. AppArt is open daily to the public from 10am to 4 pm from Saturday 6th to Easter Sunday 21st April. Admission is free. HEALTH IS WEALTH Jo Butler from Physio 1to1 on the benefits of keeping active

H

EALTH IS wealth’ is a saying we don’t use enough in daily life. Unfortunately ‘Time is money’ tends to get quoted far more often. We live in a wealth-focussed landscape but it is really our health that will ultimately define us. It is our health that allows us the ability to make the most of the personal circumstances we find ourselves in.

tension can contribute to musculoskeletal injuries. We need to pay more attention to the ‘health is wealth’ mantra and take time to reflect on how our lifestyle is impacting on our inside health, then take control by taking steps to change and improve it.

During the good times, our good health can help us reach our highest goals and achieve our dreams and ambitions. When we find ourselves in difficult times, sometimes challenging circumstances, our good health can help us be robust enough to withstand all that befalls us and get back on our feet. Health is the currency we use to navigate through the various circumstances we find ourselves in throughout our life.

As a Chartered Physiotherapist, I spend a lot of my time encouraging people to be more active. Regular exercise is one of the lifestyle choices that can have a profound effect on improving your health and wellbeing. Evidence suggests that physical activity boosts the natural production of serotonin (a feel-good chemical), not just during the activity but for hours after it. Serotonin is also used in antidepressants due to its positive effect on mood and wellbeing. Rather than take medication, you can produce it yourself just by exercising.

An online poll by YouGov this year worryingly found that in the past year, 74% of people have felt so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope. 46% responded that they had begun to eat too much or eat unhealthily due to stress, whilst others reported an increase in alcohol consumption. It is all too easy to get into a downward spiral with stress. When we feel stressed a hormone called cortisol is released by the body and if this happens too often, our body can no longer respond to stress and starts to feel fatigued. Stress can also exacerbate heart, respiratory and other underlying conditions. Even something as mild as increased muscle

Starting to become active can be daunting, especially if you haven’t done much exercise before or if you are managing a health condition. It is all too easy to stop moving when you have a health condition. Keeping moving is one of the most important aspects of managing long term health conditions, ranging from arthritis, chronic pain through

HEALTH IS WEALTH to conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or Parkinsons Disease (PD). If you have arthritis, it is okay to experience some pain, or even a slight increase in pain during and after exercise. As long as it settles back to pre-exercise levels within 24 hours, your activity level will be about right. If it lasts longer try reducing the level of exercise.

If you are in a wheelchair most of the day, move within your level of ability. This could be arm movements holding light weights, marching your legs up and down or bending and straightening your knees. It is sometimes useful to adopt a 24-hour approach to moving. Try to break up your day so you don’t stay in the same position for too long. This is particularly important if you are limited in your ability to move. Sometimes a change of position, such as lie down in bed to stretch out your legs, can be hugely beneficial to your wellbeing.

HEALTH IS WEALTH

The pain should also not be too severe or coincide with protracted swelling, heat, or redness of joints. You could try exercising in a pool initially where there is decreased weight bearing through your joints. You don’t have to be able to swim, just walking in the pool, doing some squats or marching will all help build muscle strength. You can then aim to do this on land once you feel stronger. If you have chronic (long-term) pain, focus on how your ability to do the activities changes rather than expecting the pain to reduce. Once again gradually increase your activity levels and do things at your own pace, monitoring your improvement over time.

With long term conditions you can have good and bad days. Monitor your activities based upon how you feel and don’t get overly concerned with the bad days, they will come and go. If you are unsure always talk it through with your GP or Physiotherapist. Exercise should be gradually introduced to allow your body to get used to the increased activity. Remember ‘Health is wealth’ so take time out of your schedule to pay attention to your body. Get moving, enable those natural feel good chemicals to flood your body and melt away your tension. Tesla Model 3 The wait is nearly over

T

he first electric car went on sale as long ago as 1884, yet it was not until 2012 that the first electric car with a decent range arrived in the form of the impressive Tesla Model S.

taller passengers might find headroom a bit tight.

It’s aimed at beating prestige models such as the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, however, it has been a long time in coming, allowing other manufacturers to develop their own electric models.

So, on the surface, the Model 3 is indeed an attractive mid-size saloon. Under the skin, of course, the Tesla is a very different beast to conventional competitors, with much of the hi-tech underpinnings developed from the upmarket Model S. The batteries, for example, are of an evolved design and are warranted for 8 years. However, Tesla confidently expects a 20-year life without serious degradation.

We were delighted to be offered a preview of the Model 3 recently at Tesla’s flagship facility in Chiswick. From the outside, the Model 3 shares much of the clean styling of the bigger Model S, but is usefully 300mm shorter and 100mm narrower.

Every Model 3 contains over 20 cameras and sensors, allowing a completely self-driving mode to be unlocked when legislation allows. At present, a degree of semi-autonomous driving can be specified.

Clean, almost Swedish styling extends to the interior of the car, which has a unique fascia design with no instrument panel facing the driver. Instead, everything is viewed and controlled via a huge centre-mounted touchscreen. Essential driving information, such as speed, is grouped in the top right corner of the screen (on UK cars). This keeps the content neatly within the driver's eye-line and works surprisingly well.

Model 3 sales have already started in the US, with UK right-hand-drive cars due in the showrooms shortly. Initially, only the top-spec model will be offered, priced around £55,000 with a range of over 300 miles. Other models will soon follow, starting from £30-35,000 and with a 220mile range.

Good as the Model S is, its £75,000+ price puts it out of reach of most of us. So Tesla’s smaller mid-priced Model 3 saloon has been eagerly awaited. Indeed, at one point, the global advance orders totalled over 400,000!

No mistaking the Model 3's dashboard with its 15" centre screen (left-hand-drive model shown). The centre screen in more detail (left-hand drive model is shown, UK cars will show speed in the top right-hand corner).

April's gardening opportunities

A

pril is a magical time in the garden. This month offers us so many wonderful opportunities. There are so many seeds you can sow now, so whether you favour growing vegetables, herbs, fruit, or flowers, don’t miss this chance to grow the plants that hold a special place in your heart. Viola tricolor, often known as ‘Heart’s Ease’ is a dainty, yet easy-to-grow plant, which produces edible and very pretty purple, yellow, and white flowers that have an attractive painterly quality. These edible flowers have a delicate flavour, which is rather like young salad leaves – sweet but mild. Viola tricolor flowers are ideal for decorating salads. The more flowers you pick, the more your plants will produce. This wild flower has medicinal properties which can help to strengthen blood vessels. Viola tricolor flowers were said to heal broken hearts. They were frequently used as an ingredient in love potions. I find that this grows almost anywhere, in sun or shade. It’s a sweet little plant, ideal for window boxes or containers. Seeds can be sown direct this month. Choose a spot where you can be charmed by these pretty flowers’ whiskery faces, which smile at us so cheerfully, whatever the weather. Nasturtium ‘Summer Carousel’ produces vibrant flowers in shades of shocking pink and creamy yellow. Nasturtiums produce edible flowers and seeds with a spicy, peppery taste. They’re great plants for wildlife: the flowers attract bees and the leaves are a food plant for the cabbage white butterfly. Seeds can be sown directly in the ground or in containers. Another plant that’s good for bees and butterflies is Ammi daucoides. This hardy annual produces charming lacy domes of ivory flowers which are popular with bees, butterflies, and other insects. The blooms are complemented by fresh, green lacy foliage, and it makes a fabulous cut flower. Sow seeds directly in the soil in full sun or partial shade. Add some twiggy pea sticks to support your plants, which will grow to around 1m (3.3ft) tall, depending on your soil. Broad bean ‘Express’ is a really fast-growing broad bean, and if you have room in your garden or allotment, this is an ideal variety to sow directly in the soil this month. Alternatively, ‘Robin Hood’ is a productive dwarf broad bean that’s a great choice for container growing. Broad bean plants often attract black bean aphid. If your plants succumb to this pest, don’t worry, just pinch out the top of your plants and they’ll soon disappear – I promise!

‘Tokyo Cross’ is a versatile and fast-growing turnip. Every part of this plant is edible, the leaves and roots are both very tasty. Roots can be harvested when they’re radish-sized, as baby veg, or left to grow on and harvested between radish and tennis ball size. Sow a number of ‘Tokyo Cross’ seeds every week or two, from spring until autumn, for a regular supply of mild, creamy white turnips and sweet, tasty greens. Seeds can be sown directly where they are to grow, either in containers or in the ground. It’s lovely to grow your own lettuces and salads. I mix seeds of my favourite lettuce varieties, perked up with a few fennel and basil seeds and sow in window boxes. I enjoy baby leaf salads, I cut the leaves just above soil level after just a couple of weeks’ growth. For a continuous supply, I harvest the leaves from one container one week, and leaves from the other planter the following week. Keep your plants well-watered and they’ll provide you with crisp, fresh- tasting salads, all spring and summer long. Are you growing any tomatoes? The sooner you sow your tomato seeds the better, as your plants need a considerable amount of time to grow and develop. You’ll find lots of information about tomato varieties on my website at www.pumpkinbeth.com. Tomatoes can be started off inside a glasshouse or on a bright windowsill. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed, at the end of May or beginning of June. Alternatively, you could purchase tomato plants at your local garden centre or nursery. If you’re on the lookout for some new plants for your garden, Loseley Park near Guildford are holding a Spring Garden Show on Friday 26th, Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April 2019. This fabulous show gives visitors the chance to purchase a wide range of plants, garden furniture, pots, ornaments, and food from a April 2019

variety of stalls, growers, artisans, and producers. Visitors also get the chance to enjoy a relaxing stroll through Loseley’s beautiful gardens, which include one of the most amazing wisterias you’re likely to find. Loseley’s specimen is vast. Planted along the length of one of the garden’s walls, this wisteria looks as if it’s part of the scenery from a magical fairy story. Its ancient, twisting, twining branches are gnarled and full of character and beauty.

Method: 1. Pre-heat oven to 130°C. Using an electric whisk, whip the egg whites until they become stiff. Gradually add spoonfuls of sugar, whisking well in between each spoonful until all the sugar is combined and the whites are stiff and glossy. 2. Spoon the meringue onto a baking sheet lined with silicone paper and spread into a circle. Build up the sides of the pavlova so when cooked, there is a well in the centre for the cream. Place on the middle shelf of the oven for 1 hour. 3. To prepare the fruit, slice the strawberries and combine them in a bowl with the other berries and 1tsp caster sugar and set aside to marinate. 4. After 1 hour turn off the oven and leave the meringue in to cool. It should be crisp and slightly golden, but it will still be soft in the middle. When it’s cool, carefully slide off the paper onto a serving plate. 5. Beat the cream to soft peaks and spread in the middle of the pavlova. Drip and drizzle the lemon curd over and top with the berries and give it a final dusting of icing sugar and serve.

WEEKEND WALK

Hascombe and Hydon’s Ball This is a varied walk with one or two steep ascents. It passes through some of the most delightful woodland. It is fine at any time of the year, but especially in the spring because of the lambs and the bluebells. For larger map, please visit www.fancyfreewalks.org.uk. 1. Take the very wide new sandy path leading from the car park away from the pub across a field. On reaching a hedge, turn right on a path that runs between the hedge and a meadow. Follow it into woodland and, in 20m, fork right to a driveway. Follow the driveway away from a house for 60m and then go left up some wooden steps through a small wooden gate into a meadow 2. Turn immediately upwards right, almost doubling back, going over a stile or through a gate and onto a path through hollies and up a bank. In 50m, you meet a wide level grassy path at a bend. Turn sharp left here and follow this path through beautiful woodland with occasional tall pines. In about 200m, ignore a wide (rutted) path left and in 20m ignore a path forking right. Continue through woodland which in spring is carpeted by bluebells. The path leads down to a stony track bordering a field. Turn right on it, crossing a tarmac lane in 100m, onto another wide track and follow it up to a gate. 3. Through the gate, there is a culture shock. You are now in a road leading past expensive dwellings, many fenced off from view. There are fine views left and the good road surface makes the going easy. Ignore all turnings off while the road bends a few times and reaches a long straight stretch with tall pines and leads to a main road. 4. Do not cross the main road but turn sharp left almost looping back. This drive leads to houses (The Old Dairy and High Barn). Just before them, fork right on a darker signposted straight path. You will be staying on this path for 1 km total, avoiding the great joys of springtime. The bluebell seen in suburban gardens is often the bluebell which branch-offs. has larger, paler flowers and no path scent andcurves is regarded as a allSpanish unmarked Your round serious threat to the native species. majestic tall pines. Your path ends at a junction with a curving wide surfaced track. 5. Turn sharp left on this wide track and, in only 25m, fork left on a narrow path (which may be a little overgrown and difficult to see). Your path goes steeply uphill and runs alongside the boundary of a sheep meadow on your left. It quickly levels out, passes through a young coppice (trees cut down to the roots, now partly harvested), takes you through a new wooden gate, curves right and meets a road via another wooden gate. 6. Cross the road to a footpath into the woods directly ahead. You are now on Hydon Heath, with Mallard Wood on your left. The footpath leads through coppices, with diversions through the trees in case of mud. In about 200m you go through an earth bank and over a crossing path. Your narrow path continues directly over. In less than 100m more, the coppice ends abruptly and your path is joined by a path from the right as it enters thick natural woodland with holly and tall pines. In another 60m, you meet a post bearing the symbol of the Octavia Hill Trail, joining a path from the right. A second post is in 10m and a third post in a further 25m. 10m after this third Octavia Hill post, your path comes to a narrow and rather obscure oblique crossing path. Turn right here through bracken. 7. Follow this narrow winding path for about 100m to a T-junction with another narrow path and turn left on it, immediately coming out to a very wide dirt track. Almost directly opposite is another broad track. Follow it steeply uphill, keeping to the right of a green box, to reach Hydon's Ball where there is a stone seat and good views across the Weald and west to Black Down. 8. Turn left and go just to the left of a triangulation pillar on a wide sandy path downhill. At the end of the path, elbow left by an Octavia Hill post and continue for another 40m to reach a T-junction with a major track, by a National Trust sign. Turn right on the major track for 40m and turn left at a post on a track leading towards a field. In just 15m, by a wooden seat, turn left again so that you are walking alongside the field on your right. In 120m, you meet a crossing with a sunken path ahead by a post with a blue arrow. 9. Turn right here between fields. (In case this path is waterlogged, it is possible to scramble past through trees and roots on the left. Alternatively, go back and turn left round three sides of the field.) This track goes for some distance and becomes a

darker sunken trackway. After 400m or so in total, it emerges at a T-junction with a wide open track. Turn left here. You are now on the Greensand Way. The track curves right and reaches a farm and a house, Little Burgate, at a road. 10. Go over the road, opposite the house, and take a narrow unmapped horse path opposite. This path bends right, at first parallel to the road, then quickly curves away from the road and veers left up a bank. It leads up through a moist wooded valley, obviously well-trodden by riders. Stay at all times on the main path and follow it as it turns sharply left near the top. It emerges into beautiful open woodland where it continues straight ahead on a grassy path. In 50m, at a T-junction with another pleasant grassy path, turn right. 11. You are now in the Hurtwood and nearing the end of the journey. In 230m, the light wood and sparse saplings give way, at a broad crossing path, to a coppiced area which has been completely felled. Continue straight ahead with the felled area on your right and some dark green spruces on your left. In another 200m, at the next wide crossing path, turn right. In 70m, go over a crossing and, in another 90m, turn left at a major crossing path which is very broad and unmistakable. 12. You are now back on the Greensand Way. The path crosses another broad path where there are blue arrows and a GW symbol. In 180m, avoid a path that forks right, after which your path becomes narrower. The path eventually acquires a new grey

and stony surface and leads down to a junction where you can see a steep descent ahead. 13. Keep straight ahead steeply down on a wide cinder path. In 50m, fork right up a bank on a much narrower path, as directed by a GW waymarker, and shortly veer left on a more comfortable level path with forest falling away to the valley on your left. 14. At a fork in the path, a GW sign leads you left very steeply down with wooden railings to a wooden gate in a field corner. Follow a fenced path along the righthand side of the field, through a wooden gate at a crossing path, back to the White Horse and car park where the walk began.

PROFILE

The Bourne Conservation Group

T

he Bourne Conservation Group - a group of volunteers who contribute to keeping our area attractive, by maintaining and improving local open spaces – has begun working with other groups in Farnham and the wider area to form a Biodiversity Partnership whose principle aim will be to develop a Biodiversity Action Plan for Farnham. The countryside around Farnham is unusually rich in diverse habitats, ranging from sandy heathland to woodlands on clay to the chalk of the Hogs Back; each habitat with its own characteristic flora and fauna. There are many local environmental hotspots - Frensham and Thursley Commons, Alice Holt Forest, Farnham Heath and The Bourne Woods. Within the town are large natural areas such as Farnham Park, Bishop’s Meadow and Tice’s Meadow. The northern branch of the Wey, which flows through the town, acts as an important green corridor for species to move through its urban area. As a result, the town’s biodiversity is remarkable – in one garden in South Farnham 633 species of moths have been recorded, and at Tice’s Meadow the numbers of birds seen now stands at 190 species. Farnham Park is a hotspot for the internationally

threatened great crested newt. Such flagship species are important, but they are sustained by the rich overall environmental biodiversity. ‘Biodiversity’ is an expression of the full richness of animal and plant species living in a region. The greater the variety of habitats within a region, the greater the number of species that will be found there. Recent reports have shown that globally very many species are declining - the planet may be entering a new era of extinction equivalent to the one that snuffed out the dinosaurs. To reverse this worrying trend local action as well as global action is urgently needed – this trend threatens us all. The Farnham Biodiversity Partnership will pool skills and resources to draw up a Biodiversity Action Plan for the town. The first tasks will be to assess the town’s natural assets, and to improve public awareness to the environmental impacts of litter, of improper use of chemical pest controls, of planting inappropriate hedges and invasive plants, and making gardens wildlife friendly. Simple actions can reap enormous wildlife benefits. For example, reporting sightings of Asian hornets or oak processionary moths will help to keep these dangerous invaders at bay. The aim of the plan will be to establish best environmental practice throughout the Town. Farnham was recently cited as the second most happy place to live in the UK. It has a rich cultural heritage, high quality schools and numerous social opportunities, but many people are unaware that the variety of the environments in and around the town is a major contributor to the quality of living. If this quality is to be preserved, its biodiversity needs to be conserved and enhanced; the Biodiversity Action Plan will offer the means to do this.

Usable all year round

“The conservatory is now used throughout all seasons of the year and is far more comfortable to sit in whatever the weather outside.” Mr & Mrs Gibson, Portishead

Cooler in summer

“You could have fried an egg on the table in there in the summer, I now look upon the conservatory as a new room. It is quiet, restful and cosy.” Carol Doyle, Surrey

“There is no doubt that the conservatory is much warmer than previously, and no, the room is not darker either!”

Reduces energy bills

“ I’ve already turned the underfloor heating down. Lovely job guys, thank you!” Anne Bird, Bristol

Quieter in bad weather

“ For the first time in 10 years we do not have to close the door to the conservatory when it rains, as the noise is minimal and before I found it difficult to hear the TV over the loudness of the rain on the old roof.” Mr & Mrs Bailey-Webb, Warsash
