• THE EDITOR'S NOTE Our main article this month is on the benefits of walking, to which I can attest. I have long been interested in walking, ever since my dad would take out of an evening for a stroll and then reward me with a portion of chips which we would share as we walked back home. Having a young Labrador means that I now walk more than ever, with a minimum of two walks a day. According to technology, I am averaging 5.5 miles a day which is certainly good for my health. It is also good for general well-being, giving you a chance to reflect, to see what is around you, to keep away from your phone, and generally appreciate the beauty that surrounds us in this lovely part of the world. Since we started our magazine in 2009, we have always published a monthly walk and will continue to do so to encourage people to get out and about. There are a number of groups like the Ramblers and Walking for Health that enable people to not only get out, but meet other likeminded people. Many of them feature in our Jottings every month, so do think about trying them out. While I will always extol the value and delight of having a dog, it is not the only reason to get out and about. We now have over 12,000 subscribers to our monthly e-newsletter which goes out no more than twice a month with a preview of our next edition, our forthcoming competitions and some of the offers provided by our advertisers, some of which are exclusive to subscribers. If you don’t want to miss out and want to receive this, please go to our website at www.vantagepointmag.co.uk and sign up there.

Watch their weight! Obesity rates are increasing for our pet dogs, says Zoe Blake SO IT’S that time of year when we all make those New Year’s resolutions. Lose some weight, eat better and try and have a healthier lifestyle... sound familiar? But what about our dogs. Is it time for them to have a new lease of life? Sadly current scientific literature states that 40% of dogs are overweight, so with an estimated 9.3 million dogs living in the UK that’s approximately 3.7 million dogs that are potentially suffering with health and welfare issues. Obesity is the most concerning disease of our modern time and causes a range of illnesses and seriously affects quality of life. Every day on the news, in the magazines and on social media there will be something highlighting this. We can speak up and seek help and advice but what about our dogs? We need to be responsible for them and act accordingly. Like with us, if they eat too much and don’t do enough exercise they will naturally put on weight. As the weight starts to escalate so does the strain on the heart/joints and other body organs. So what can we do to help our canine friends? Firstly we need to actually assess whether they are overweight and then evaluate their feeding and lifestyle. The dog world is full of so many different breeds and crosses and so relying on ideal breed weights is not really the best approach. Yes it’s good to have an ideal weight target however the modern approach is to body condition score. Anyone can do this, you basically match your dog’s shape and description to the chart and then it gets a score.
So you have been told your dog needs to lose a few kgs, what now? I would firstly go home and sit down and actually write down what your dog is fed on a daily basis ensuring you ask every member of the household, include in this how much exercise they have. Then have a realistic look and see how this could be improved. • Start to measure their daily food rations and divide into small frequent meals (3-5 is ideal), following the manufacturers guidelines on feeding quantity • Cut out any human leftovers that may sneak into the bowl • Reduce the treats you give...these easily accumulate • Increase the exercise, add in an extra walk if you can. Shorter frequent walks are more effective than one long marathon. Try these for a month, reassess, if the weight is not starting to reduce then seek further help. Most veterinary practices should have a nurse who has been trained in weight management. Alternatively please feel free to get in touch with me.
If you feel like you would like to do this for yourself please visit www.royalcaninhealthyweight.co.uk/pet-obesity. Your veterinary surgeon/nurse should be using BCS along with their bodyweights to advise whether they think some weight loss may be beneficial. If you haven’t ever heard of this then please ask next time you visit your surgery.

prints, books and manuscripts from such prestigious lenders as the British Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Tate.
Some of Blake’s greatest works, from poetry to painting, will be displayed at Petworth this winter in a major new exhibition that celebrates the famous artist’s relationship with Sussex. William Blake moved to Felpham, near Bognor Regis, in 1800. He soon described his rented cottage there as “the sweetest spot on earth” and it was to be the only place outside of London where he would ever live. Blake’s three years in Sussex inspired a wide body of extraordinary work, done for new and existing patrons and ranging from the familiar to the rarely considered. Aside from the work associated with Felpham, the Petworth collection includes three major paintings by Blake – otherwise unrepresented in other grand houses – along with related prints, books and archival material. It is, therefore, particularly fitting that the first exhibition devoted to all dimensions of the artist’s associations with Sussex should take place here. Along with the Petworth collection of Blakes, the exhibition will also include paintings, drawings,

Featuring over fifty exhibits, William Blake in Sussex traces the artist’s connections with the county. Initially encouraged to come south by the Sussex poet William Hayley, Blake set about a number of projects under the employment of his new friend. Ultimately, however, he found the engravings and paintings requested by Hayley increasingly distracting from the more visionary work which was his calling. Blake continued with projects such as the remarkable biblical watercolours for his London patron Thomas Butts, and developed his two greatest illustrated epic poems, Milton and Jerusalem, each of which overtly references his Sussex experiences throughout: “In Felpham I saw Visions of Albion” he writes in the latter. Chief among the events which profoundly affected Blake in Sussex was his arrest and trial for sedition, of which he was ultimately cleared.

puts the Blake collection at Petworth into context with related works and demonstrates how the artist’s Sussex experiences were of continuing importance for the rest of his career. Amongst the highlights of the exhibition are hand-coloured pages from the poem Milton, of which only four copies are in existence. These feature the lines ‘And did those feet in ancient time…’ which were later adapted for the hymn Jerusalem. Other pages on display show the cottage at Felpham and the spirit of John Milton, the author of Paradise Lost, in the shape of a comet landing on Blake’s ankle, symbolising the moment which inspired him to write Milton. Also featured is the outstanding watercolour, A Vision of The Last Judgment, along with related works and Blake’s own hand-written description of the events it depicts. This scene of the apocalypse, inspired by Michaelangelo’s Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel, depicts the Angels of Judgement Day, sounding trumpets and encircled by the blessed rising to Heaven and the damned descending to Hell. The picture is one of two which were commissioned from Blake by Elizabeth Ilive, the estranged wife of Petworth’s third Earl of Egremont. The third Earl was one of the magistrates at Blake’s first hearing in 1803, held in the building which is now Petworth’s Leconfield Hall, when the artist was charged with assault and sedition for throwing a drunken soldier out of his garden at Felpham. Some of the key documentation associated with his arrest and trial is included in the exhibition. For the first time, examples of all the books which Blake illustrated for his Sussex patron William Hayley are exhibited together, along with major paintings made to decorate Hayley’s library. Also included is the most famous portrait of Blake, done by Thomas Phillips, which is now in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. Blake’s mysterious The Sea of Time and Space, a late watercolour of a coastal scene, is featured among a group of works which seem to reflect the artist’s earlier Sussex experiences. Discovered at the National Trust’s Arlington Court above a wardrobe in the housemaid’s pantry when January 2018
the house was donated in 1947, little is known of how – or why – it came to be there. It is unlikely that this incredible body of material will ever be reassembled again, making William Blake in Sussex an exhibition not only of local interest but also of national significance. In addition to this, a parallel exhibition in Petworth House showcases the drawings made by the author Philip Pullman, President of the Blake Society, for his internationally acclaimed His Dark Materials trilogy, alongside a display devoted to the fascinating figure of Elizabeth Ilive, who directly commissioned two of Petworth’s paintings from Blake. 10 reason to LOVE WALKING Could you find time for a brisk 30 min walk daily? The benefits can be truly inspirational, says Linda Routledge IN GENERAL terms we all know that walking can be a great form of exercise, and the majority of us may well concede that we don’t walk nearly enough. Whilst sitting here writing this article I am feeling somewhat guilty that I haven’t managed a brisk walk today (must get out for lunch!). The majority of us walk simply to get from A to B. Walking has become the casualty of our modern lifestyle, being replaced by cars in the fast paced world. Unfortunately as we walk less, so the rate of chronic diseases increases dramatically. In this modern era of energy saving devices it takes a little bit more effort and organisation to find the time for a brisk walk, however if we do the benefits can be truly spectacular. MOOD Stress and depression in the workplace are increasing at an alarming rate, accounting for 35% of all work related ill health cases, and the use of antidepressants has risen dramatically in recent years. You know that feeling when you have had a tough day at work and it takes a glass of wine or a little chocolate to wind down. Walking is a much healthier alternative with the same benefits. Research has shown that regular brisk walks can have a dramatic

effect on our mood, actually modifying our nervous system such that we experience less stress, depression and even anger. What’s more, when walking outside there is much more exposure to natural sunlight (severely lacking in our modern officebased life) that can counter the effect of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Walking with another person or a social group can also help to promote the feeling of being connected with others, boosting mood. CREATIVITY & PROBLEM SOLVING Some days you just cannot get your brain in gear, problems seem insurmountable and solutions much harder to find. On these days what we really need is a brisk walk. Research has shown that people come up with more creative ideas while walking than sitting. And even better, the effects carry on for a while, meaning you think more creatively when you return to your desk as well. Getting away from your desk and boosting blood flow to the brain with a moderately active walk can be really beneficial but do not do too much, as high intensity walking can be detrimental to the thinking process. pound the streets alone or get to the gym. Although many of us wouldn’t immediately consider walking as a weight loss exercise, it does in fact improve the body’s response to insulin, which can help to reduce body fat. Also, did you know that walking burns the same calories as running; it just takes longer to cover the same distance? So a brisk 30 minute walk every day (about 2 miles) burns exactly the same calories as running 10km twice a week. And walking tones the areas of the body that we often want to focus on, like legs, bums and tums. Walking is also one of the most cost effective low-impact exercises to increase metabolism and start weight loss. SLEEP & ENERGY How often do you find your day is spent yearning for your bed, only to toss and turn all night, waking up feeling groggy and drained? Modern life can be so fast paced and draining that turning off at night just becomes a battle. Unfortunately this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as we are so groggy during the day that we cannot function effectively and worries follow us to bed. You might be surprised to learn that a regular brisk walk can boost daytime energy levels which in turn can help you sleep deeper and longer at night. However be cautious about timing your walk, brisk exercise can boost energy levels so much that it becomes difficult to fall asleep. Better to schedule the walk for earlier in the day (lunchtime is ideal) to boost afternoon energy levels and help with falling asleep later. BONE HEALTH So much of our day is now spent sitting down that there is very little stimulus for our bodies to build strong healthy bones, increasing our risk of developing osteoporosis (decreased bone density). Our bones are not fixed structures but in fact undergo constant remodelling to suit our needs. Our sedentary lifestyle is resulting in a chronic reduction in bone density amongst the general population, the overall result being more fractures. Walking, however, can reduce the risk of hip fracture by 30%. Walking adds

more load to the bones, stimulating the production of more bone cells. But studies have gone even further and found that if you increase your pace (have a brisk walk rather than stroll), change direction regularly during your walk, or include a steep hill you can give even more protection against osteoporosis and fractures. HEART DISEASE As one of the biggest modern-day killers, there is a huge amount of research supporting the prevention of chronic heart disease. Studies have now proven time and time again that simply walking every day can dramatically reduce your risk of developing chronic heart disease. A daily brisk walk results in a reduction in blood pressure, reduces cholesterol levels and can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease or stroke. In fact, a study investigating high risk adults found that an extra 2,000 steps a day beyond their normal was associated with an 8% reduced risk of having a cardiovascular event. CANCER & DIABETES You may be surprised to read that walking can alleviate chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes but the effects are now well documented. A brisk walk can help manage and even prevent Type II Diabetes. The body’s response to insulin is improved, and even a small reduction in weight can delay or prevent onset of this disease. Walking may also reduce your chances of developing some cancers including breast, prostate and bowel cancer. These types of cancers are the most influenced by a

lack a physical activity, and even a small amount of activity improves natural antioxidants and lymphatic filtering, both of which eradicate pre-cancerous cells before they can take hold. DIGESTION Exercise in general is critically important for our digestion. Whilst we breathe, our diaphragm presses down on the digestive tract, massaging it and helping the digestive process. Unfortunately when we sit for long periods of time, our intestines are actually squashed and the diaphragm cannot descend fully so cannot help digestion. Not only does walking help healthy digestion, it can have impressive results for those with bowel conditions. Studies have shown that regular exercising including walking saw a dramatic improvement in abdominal pain and other symptoms for those with IBS. PREVENT DEMENTIA Currently around 1 in 14 of us will develop dementia over 65 and that number decreases to 1 in 6 over the age of 80. Worldwide one new case of dementia is diagnosed every four seconds, making cognitive decline the most pressing issue of the 21st century. Crucially there is now a wealth of evidence to show that walking regularly can improve the health of our grey matter and even bring back some grey matter that has been lost! ANTI-AGING We all want to look and feel younger but walking can actually achieve this. A study presented at the European Society of Cardiology congress provided evidence that regular aerobic exercise triggers an anti-aging process that helps to repair old DNA, suggesting that it may delay the aging process. Walking is one of the simplest and easiest ways to get active, and is eminently suitable for so many people for so many reasons. Take your first step today! Bright Shadow - ageing reimagined • HEALTH are privileged to witness some of the moments of joy and self-expression that come about as a result of engaging with arts and so Zest Communities are a way to allow friends and family to be part of those precious moments too. Surrey groups meet on alternate Wednesdays at the URC church Woking and at the Baptist Church Godalming. You can find a full list of dates at: http://brightshadow.org.uk/zestworkshops/zest-communities/zest-communitiessurrey/. Is it only for people with dementia?
BRIGHT SHADOW exist to enable people living with dementia and those who love and care for them to live well and to thrive. Founded eight years ago by drama graduates Katy Hirst and Rhiannon Lane, Bright Shadow set out to ensure that there were opportunities for brightness and fun for all older people at every stage of life. Using performance activities and good doses of imagination, Bright Shadow’s Zest workshops offer opportunities for self-expression, exposure to new art forms and experiences, as well as the chance for families and friends to enjoy each other’s company. What is Zest? Zest is an approach to activity that has been developed by Bright Shadow through practice and evaluation. Each Zest workshop has its own theme, such as a Desert Island, or Diwali. Within each workshop highly skilled facilitators deliver singing, music, movement and story-making activities. These facilitators have the ability to enable engagement, no matter what physical or memory problems a person is experiencing. Zest workshops run in care homes and in the community by adapting the content to provide appropriate levels of challenge for the people taking part. Bright Shadow believe in people centred approaches and their facilitators are always open to including activities that reflect the personalities of the people in the group. Zest Communities are award winning groups that meet fortnightly in communities across the South East of England. In January 2016, Bright Shadow started with one community in Kent. 18 months on they now have groups in seven towns in Kent and Surrey. Zest Communities are designed for people living with dementia and their carers, friends and family to come along to. Bright Shadow feel that they

Bright Shadow has worked with thousands of older people and not all of them have dementia. They have worked with people in their 40s and 50s right up to people who have a telegram from the Queen! Their skilled facilitators make sure that it is an inclusive group that everyone can enjoy. There is now a lot of research that shows the benefits of taking part in arts activities. Movement and dance help keep you fit and balanced, singing has been proven to have numerous benefits for speech and mood, cognitive and imaginative activities help the elasticity of the brain which enables it to cope with dementia diseases better and social activity has numerous benefits on wellbeing. There has been such a dominating image of older age in the media but it is beginning to change and Bright Shadow is right there at the forefront, re-imagining and redesigning what ageing and living well with dementia can look like.

CRAFT
INSPIRATION Reusable bags these days are more and more becoming a trending alternative to single-use plastic bags. This month Giulia Mauri shows you how to decorate an ordinary blank canvas bag to make it into something special to be carried around the high street with pride. It's an ideal project to be done with children from the age of 3 onwards that will literally help you reduce your carbon footprint!
DIFFICULTY: (easy)
FUN:
Gather all of the materials. Blank canvas bags can be purchased online for as little at 60p each. There are so many different sizes and models; with short or long handles and canvas thickness varies as well. If you are handy with a sewing machine you could indeed sew your own too.
1
As for the fabric paint, it’s available in so many different colours, but to minimise the cost of this project, you could just buy primary (red, blue and yellow) and create secondary colours (purple, orange, green) by mixing them together. You’ll also need a medium size paintbrush, a couple of dishes to mix the colours in.
(lots!)
COST: (£3-£10)
When the hand/foot has completely been painted you are ready for the printing! Position the hand just above the canvas and then gently rest it on the fabric of the bag and press it against it. (Tip: You want to make sure that even the paint in the concave part of the hand is touching the canvas as well otherwise you’ll end up with a gap).
4
Wash or wipe the hand or foot before painting the other one. To fix the print permanently on your bag, turn it inside out once dry and iron it using a high heat setting.
5
Prepare the area you are going to be working in. Newspapers or an oilcloth would be ideal. If you are choosing to decorate with your children’s footprints you definitely want to carry out this project in the bathroom to avoid rainbow prints all over your lovely house.
2
Begin by painting rainbow stripes on your child’s hand or foot. This process needs to be done fairly quickly to avoid the colour drying out. For an educational twist ask your child to pick the orders of which they would like the colours to be on the print beforehand. If they are a little bit older you could get them to stir the colours in the pot as well.

Excellent experience from beginning to end, good price versus competitors, no hard sell for example price was price and didn't magically reduce by half "just for me" which seems common in this business,. Good and genuine advice, honest and very pleasant service. Work completed as planned (lead time a bit shorter than competitors) and worth every penny. I would recommend any day, I love my blinds and my shutters even more. Thanks Jamie and Martin. Customer in Woking The blinds exceeded all my expectations and Richard, Jamie and Valerie provided a very customer-focused experience. All three were a delight to work with! The blinds were of excellent quality and Richard provided a very professional, efficient and tidy quote and fitting service. Jamie was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful during the quote process for the kitchen. Thank you so much for such a professional service and you have already been recommended to family and friends. Customer in Haslemere
Absolutely first class in every respect. Product is of excellent quality, and the fitting is faultless. Polite, efficient and courteous fitter (Jamie) and the whole thing was less than half the cost of Sandersons, who offered a very inferior UPVC product. If you want absolutely the best shutters, this is the company to use. Brilliant! Would definitely use in the future Customer in Virginia Water This is a remarkable company in every respect. The work was completed to the highest possible standard, real craftsmanship. I have no hesitation in recommending CBS Ltd to anyone who wishes for excellence. Customer in Guildford

Happy New Houseplant • GARDENING
With Beth Otway Simply remove a fully developed leaf, and pot it up carefully in gritty, well-drained compost, ensuring that the base of the leaf is touching the compost. Cover with a clear plastic bag if you wish, but it's not essential.
NOW THAT the Christmas decorations have been taken down, if you find yourself wondering how to add a renewed freshness to your home, if you dream of an energising, yet relaxing sanctuary, then you might wish to consider growing some new houseplants and bringing some living greenery to your home. It's best to work with the conditions that your home can provide. I find I can more accurately determine the brightness of a room if I am not trying to match it to a coveted plant that I am trying desperately to place. Don't worry, I can assure you that there are fabulous houseplants for any situation. I must also tell you that I recommend collecting rainwater to water all indoor plants - it can be awkward I know but worth it!
If your home offers somewhat shadier conditions, don't despair, there are plenty of beautiful and stylish houseplant companions that will love and enhance your room. Spathiphyllum wallisii, known as the peace lily, is such a darling of a houseplant. It’s easy going and great to be around, complementing any style of decor. Thriving in partially shaded, to shaded conditions, peace lilies have a fresh look and feel; they also purify the air, removing toxins. The more plants you install in a room, the greater the purifying effect and the sumptuous decadent feel. If your room is really rather shaded, opt for a houseplant that will favour these conditions. Zamioculcas zamiifolia, the ZZ plant, is quite amazing, it thrives in partially shaded to deeply shaded conditions and can be grown in rooms with only artificial light. Its green, shiny leaves add a charming presence and life to any dimly lit room. If your interest in houseplants tends to wane during the summer months, then you'll be glad to know that the ZZ plant is remarkably tolerant of neglect. All of these plants will all be happy in temperatures Left: African violet. Above: ZZ plant. from 15C-25C. Below from left: Aloe Vera (Beth Otway) and a peace lily.
If your home is bright and full of natural light, a fabulous Aloe vera plant might tempt you. This beautiful, architectural succulent will provide you with fleshy leaves, which you can remove as and when their inner gel, with its cooling and soothing properties, is required to treat sunburn and other minor injuries. Saintpaulia, or African violets, are often perpetual bloomers on windowsills; they even grow well above radiators. Place your African violet container on a saucer, and top the saucer up with water when the surface of the plant's compost begins to dry out. Deadhead regularly for optimum flowering. Take leaf cuttings to create new plants.

Miso broth with rice noodles I make this dish at least once a week for dinner – it’s a very satisfying meal and also makes you feel really cleansed! It’s so quick and easy, too; you can even make it in the advert breaks, if you are having a TV dinner. Mix it up with your favourite veggies; courgettes, sugar snaps, peas, all work, or try adding some tofu. My guilty pleasure is a splash of Thai sweet chilli sauce.

The Modern Vegetarian FOOD & DRINK •
Butternut Squash Tagine Here is my version of the amazing tagines I’ve had in Morocco. You can, of course, use any other variety of squash available or substitute carrots, turnips or courgettes. (The cooking times will vary slightly for each.)
Ingredients: 1 medium-sized butternut squash, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 onion, finely chopped, 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped pinch of salt, pinch of saffron threads, 3 teaspoons ground cumin, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 2 teaspoons paprika, 2 teaspoons coriander seeds, crushed, 2 x 400g tins tomatoes, crushed by hand, 2 red chillies, split lengthways, 1 cinnamon stick, 1 tablespoon honey, 500ml water, sea salt and black pepper, half a small bunch of coriander, finely chopped, 50g roasted flaked almonds, to garnish. Serves 4.
1. Peel the butternut squash with a potato peeler. Cut in half widthways, then again lengthways, scoop out the seeds with a spoon, then cut into approximately 2cm chunks. Reserve the peel and trim for stock. 2. Heat the olive oil in a pan, sauté the onion until softened, add the garlic and all the dry spices and cook ‘out’ for 2 minutes, until fragrant. Add the tomatoes, chillies, cinnamon stick, honey and water
and bring to the boil. 3. Add the butternut squash, season with sea salt and black pepper and simmer for 30 minutes until the mixture has thickened and the squash is tender, adding more water if necessary. Stir in the coriander and adjust the seasoning. 4. Sprinkle with almonds and serve with Buttered Chilli and Date Couscous (see below). And beware of the chillies!
Buttered Chilli Couscous In Morocco, couscous is traditionally lovingly prepared in a couscoussière; it is an art form – a prolonged process of steaming and dredging. The result, however, is sublime! Here is my simple, quick version using instant couscous.
Ingredients: 350g instant couscous, 50g butter, diced, finely grated zest of 1 lemon, 1 green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped pinch of salt, 350ml boiling water, 75g dates, pitted, finely sliced, half a small bunch of coriander, finely chopped. Serves 4.
1. Place the couscous, butter, lemon zest and chilli in a bowl. Add a pinch of salt and pour over boiling water. 2. Cover with clingfilm and leave for 2–3 minutes to
steam. Remove the clingfilm and fluff with a fork to loosen the couscous grains. 3. Stir in the dates and coriander. Serve with the Butternut Squash Tagine as above.

Volvo XC60 – the safest car in the world! • ROAD TEST
With Andy Goundry
VOLVO INTEND to make their cars among the safest on the road and have pledged that by 2020 nobody will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo. This quest has been so successful that safety experts Euro NCAP have just assessed the recently launched Volvo XC60 SUV as the safest car yet tested. Impressively, their rating was based on the car’s standard specification, unlike many manufacturers who rely on expensive option packs to boost safety. So, are the XC60’s safety features helpful or intrusive? We set out to find out. Volvo are now firmly established as a premium brand and the XC60 is beautifully finished inside and out. In true Scandinavian style, the cabin design is clean and minimalist with few physical switches, most functions being controlled through the portrait-format central touch-screen. A second screen replaces the traditional dials and incorporates a camera-based traffic sign display. As well as this visual speed limit display, an audible warning alerts the driver to exceeding the prevailing speed limit. Some lane departure systems give only an audible warning that the car is about to stray into another lane, unlike Volvo’s system which vibrates the steering wheel gently and nudges the car back into the lane if necessary. It also continually monitors for objects in the car's path and helps the driver to avoid them. Oncoming Lane Mitigation is also standard and is intended to prevent head-on collisions. If you move out of your lane
into the path of an oncoming car, the system will warn you of the potential danger, automatically providing steering assistance to guide you safely back into your lane. Blind spot warning systems are not uncommon, again Volvo's system goes much further than the usual warning light in the door mirror, and automatically applies the steering to bring the car back into the lane. Thankfully, none of the advanced safety systems needed to be put to the test in our time with the XC60. However, they reassure by their very presence. We did, however, try Pilot Assist, Volvo’s semi-autonomous driving option. This controls accelerator, brakes and steering to keep the car in the centre of its lane at a safe distance from the vehicle in front, and is intended to ease motorway driving. Activation of the system is made very clear by a prominent symbol illuminating on the driver's display screen. Once in operation, the system can be disengaged by a simple touch on the brake pedal and re-engaged by one steering wheel button press. Overall, Pilot Assist works extremely effectively and certainly makes motorway driving easier. So a big thumbs-up for the XC60 as a whole: not only very safe, also superb quality, spacious, quiet and refined, easy to drive, smooth and comfortable. Try one soon! At the top, emerge at a T-junction with a very wide track with a timber yard to your right. Continue forward along the wide track. 3. Soon take a path forking right which dips down and then back up to rejoin the track. Continue forward. Go straight across a big cross tracks and again continue forward. Look for a footpath forking right and down into the next valley. At the bottom the path swings left and reaches a multiway junction at the end of the valley. Continue forward (left) into trees and keep going until reaching a road opposite the end of Jelley’s Hollow. Cross, jinking right, to turn left and follow the Greensand Way (GS) up into trees. This takes you away from the road and then swings right (west) roughly parallel to it. 4. Follow the GS arrows for about ½ mile, along the way passing through the back of Hurtwood car park number 12, to reach Hurtwood car park number 6. Don’t be tempted by the branches left that would take you off down a steep valley side. The GS takes
you across the back of the car park then down to a road. Cross, jinking left, to turn right and continue forward. Pass a gate and then fork left at a 2-way signpost. Gradually descend. Go over a crossing track and continue to another cross-tracks. The signpost here points only left but should also point forward. Go forward, straight across. You are still on the GS. 5. Soon, reach a gate and, immediately before it, the GS takes you down to the left. Drop down a field towards a house and a lake. The path swings right and runs along the edge of the property and into trees. It reaches a T-junction where you turn right and then emerge on a drive. Continue forward (i.e. left) and quickly reach a road. Turn right, walk 100 yards and then take a footpath left, next to Stroud Farm. This is still the GS. Follow it until it passes a large house and reaches a T-junction with a lane. Turn left. Walk about 200 yards and then fork left, continuing forward to reach Shamley Green near the Red Lion and the green. For refreshments, you have the options of the Red Lion and the Bricklayers. 6. After lunch, walk towards the Bricklayers and the back of the green and take a narrow path, left, between Mellow House and the high Leylandii hedge of Summer Meadow. Follow this until it emerges on the tarmac lane that you traversed earlier. Continue forward to the far end of the lane and its T junction with a road. Cross, jinking left and taking a path climbing up to the right. Pass some steps and a gate on the right-hand side. Reach a cross-paths and continue on up the slope to reach a T-junction facing some barns. Turn right and take the track running along between fences. Soon look across to your left to see St Martha’s on the hill across a valley.

7. Follow the track for under ½ mile to reach a right turn through two gates to a road. Go straight across onto the wide vehicle track opposite, signed to Kilnhanger. Follow this track for about a mile passing Kilnhanger and also Mayor House Farm, ignoring lefts and rights and eventually reaching a road. Turn left and walk about 200 yards to a junction where the road turns sharp left. Here, at the start of Row Lane, turn right on a footpath between hedges and down a slope. At the crosspaths at the bottom go straight ahead and up a hill, Dick’s Hill, to cross a tarmac track and continue on down the other side. The path becomes very steep as you descend carefully to a deeply sunken path at the bottom. 8. Cross straight over the path, up over a bank. There is a gate immediately ahead but you turn left and walk across to the hedge to follow a path right and up a slope. Quickly reach a stile, left, and cross into a sloping meadow. Continue along the top edge of the meadow and, after 100 yards, go right and over a stile into a vineyard. Walk along the edge and, at the other side, go over a stile and turn right. Follow the path down to climb over a stile by a large wooden gate and into woodland. Immediately reach a T-junction with a track and turn right. Quickly reach a fork with yellow and blue arrows. Choose the left fork and walk with a wire fence on your right-hand side. Soon you are walking beside a large grassy meadow with good views of the North Downs. 9. At a large wooden gate, ignore a footpath on the left and keep straight on. The path continues past Knowle Farm and its house, over to your right. It then zigzags onto the concrete drive by Hound House with its long converted barn and reaches a road by the hound-pillared entrance gate. Turn right on the road and, because of the blind bend, walk on January 2018
the left. After 100 yards, turn left through a metal gate into a meadow, now with houses of Peaslake visible ahead. Avoid the wide track half-right across the centre and instead take a grassy path running along the left-hand side of the meadow. 10. After a small metal gate, the path runs beside a field. Another small metal gate is followed by another field, after which you emerge in a lane. Turn right to walk along the lane and for some 250 yards until you see a path forking off left. This cuts off a corner and takes you down to the starting car park.

Bury Court Opera • PROFILE Founded in 2007 by John Coke and Suzanne Lemieux with the aim of providing a springboard for professional young artists and those working behind the scenes in opera, Bury Court Opera has quickly become known for its innovative repertoire and high production standards – regularly receiving four-star reviews and audience acclaim. “The enterprise, flair and innovation of this charming venue…knows no bounds” (OperaNow Magazine, 2016).
Dominic Bowe (left) in the title role, Mad King Suibhne, 2017
Bury Court Opera in Bentley is banishing the January blues by gearing up for its 2018 season in early March and, after a successful 10th anniversary season with four star reviews for Cosi fan tutte and Mad King Suibhne ("The audience was spellbound"), is embarking on its most ambitious project to date, a shortened (3 hour) version of Handel’s much-loved masterpiece Julius Caesar (or Giulio Cesare in Egitto to give it its full title.) For much of the year, The Barn at Bury Court, just four miles west of Farnham, is a luxurious wedding venue, but every year in early spring a magical transformation takes place and the 180ft tithe barn (which is blessed with an exceptional acoustic) is converted into an opera house complete with tiered seating, custom-built stage and fabulous sets ready for Bury Court Opera’s annual ‘season’ – typically, five performances of one opera entirely directed, designed and performed by some of the best emerging Professional Young Artists.
John Coke and Suzanne Lemieux believe that the key to a successful production is an intimate setting and excellent casting, and are passionate about supporting young, up and coming professionals. True to that aim they do their best to spot the stars of the future and bring them to Bury Court. The 2018 season, which runs from 8th to 17th March, is no exception, and sees outstanding French-Swiss soprano and baroque specialist Marie Lys leading the cast in her role debut as Cleopatra. Marie only graduated in 2015, but is already in great demand throughout Europe, so this may well be a unique opportunity to see her at Bury Court. Marie described Cleopatra as her ‘dream role’. As Caesar, BCO have cast the former BBC Cardiff Singer of the World finalist Helen Sherman – again, making her role debut. The production will be directed by Greg Eldridge – who, at 27, was the youngest director ever to be accepted onto The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden’s Young Director Programme in 2015 and now divides his time between Ireland, Australia, Britain and just about anywhere else you can think of. Bury Court could not have been more delighted when he agreed to direct their 2018 production. Left: Marie Lys and the poster for the production
