TO THE POINT I have a suspicion that there are quite a few TOGS out there. For those not in the know, this stands for Terry’s Old Geezers and Gals, stalwarts of Sir Terry Wogan’s Radio 2 breakfast show which ran for many years until he hung Stefan Reynolds up his weekday microphone in 2009. I must Editor & Publisher admit to having been a regular listener on my commute to Richmond before starting the magazine, finding his genial manner and amusing banter a perfect tonic to the A3 and the south London school run. The trip home was with THE ONLY Johnnie Walker, which was equally enjoyable, MAGAZINE both of them masters of radio broadcasting. ROYAL MAIL DELIVERED

pleasure. Surprisingly he seemed a little ill at ease to start with, this being his first live ‘An Evening With’ but he soon relaxed and entertained us with amusing anecdotes about Eurovision (of course), the BBC and life in general. He is wonderfully self-deprecating and seems still to be quite surprised that he has ended up as a national treasure, having never really had, as he says, ‘a proper job’ since he left the bank in Ireland in his 20s. These ‘celebrity’ evenings are always good fun. In the past few years I have seen locally Sir Roger Moore, Henry Blofeld, Dawn French, Sandi Toksvig and the great Barry Cryer. All were good fun, and well worth spening an evening with. Contact the editor: stefan@vantagepublishing.co.uk

- YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD

This month, four voluntary groups that we happily promote through these pages have been recognised for their wonderful work in the community. The West Horsley Wheel of Care, the Brigette Trust based in Dorking, Guildford Street Angels and Tilford’s Rural Life Centre have all been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for voluntary groups. This got me thinking about the number of organisations we have in our community that exist purely because people are prepared to give up their time to help less fortunate people. Most of these organisations don’t of course get official recognition but their importance is no less diminished because of that. There’s a temptation to think that in this day and age people don’t care about each other as they used to. When I read about the multitude of organisations that do so much good work, I realise that this is clearly not the case. I don’t know about you but I find this enormously comforting. Looking ahead for the month, there’s still plenty of summer activities, so get out as much as you can and enjoy yourselves! Evolve Summer Exhibition takes place from Tuesday 9th June to Friday 24th July 2015 at Creative Response in Farnham. Evolve is the cumulative efforts of all at Creative Response. Including ceramics, paintings, textiles, wirework, prints and sculptures, there is sure to be something which ignites and inspires everyone. Feel free to browse and experience the ambience of Evolve from Tuesdays to Fridays from 10am to 2.30pm. Tel: 01252 716876 or visit www.creativeresponsearts.org for more. Dr Jennie Jewitt-Harris is exhibiting artworks created during her role as Artist in Residence in a solo exhibition at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village in Compton. The exhibition opened on 16th June and closes on Sunday 19th July. Intricate sketches and humorous vintage-inspired collages clash in a riot of colour. Focussing on subjects such as the passage of time, what it means to be British and the

10>

psychological implication of memory, Jennie creates art with a social conscience. If you have dementia or care for someone with dementia there is help available from The Alzheimers Society. They have recently launched a new triage service giving help, information, advice and signposting for all their services across Surrey. For more information on these services call 01932 855582 or email surrey@alzheimers.org.uk . Elstead Afternoon W.I. will hold their next meeting on Thursday 2nd July at 2.15pm In Elstead Village Hall. On this occasion there will be a talk given by Mr. D. A. Fulford entitled ‘Antique Clocks and Watches’. If this makes you curious do go along to hear what it is all about. All visitors and new members will be made very welcome, and they offer a delicious tea! Contact: Helen White on 01252 710039. If you’re wondering what to do on a Friday evening throughout July, I may have the answer. Farnham Maltings is holding ‘Grills and Guitars’ evenings every Friday throughout July ending on 7th August. It takes place outside next to the river and local talented musicians will be playing different types of music. The gigs are free (ticket required) and the cafe will be running an all you can eat BBQ at the same time. Should be a perfect way to spend a summer’s evening. Lots of really good acts have been signed up with more to come. More information at www. farnhammaltings.com. Hothouse 5, the best of emerging talent in the UK today takes place at New Ashgate Gallery, Waggon Yard, Farnham GU9 7PS from Friday 3rd July until Saturday 15th August. It’s a Crafts Council initiative where 39 makers have been selected to take part in the six-month programme which is delivered in partnership across four regions in the UK. The New Ashgate gallery is delighted to partner the Crafts Council in the Hothouse initiative. For their visitors,

Teenie weenie polka dot bikini? Maybe not…but a summer wardrobe means the dreaded swimwear shop and fashion stylist, Kirstie Smillie, has found there is an easier way. High on the scale of scary summer dressing is swimwear. Really, must we? Yes we must, as holidays and water are essential life motivators so it is crucial to put some time into what you wear. Enter lingerie and swimwear expert, Nicola Hansford, owner of Loncherie. Working in the lingerie industry for over 25 years, Nicola, has experience of both buying and selling body garments, offering her expert advice in Farnham for over five years, firstly from the

The store has the largest selection of swimwear in the surrounding counties, with brands covering cup sizes, from an A-G and in body sizes 8-24. All the labels have been thoroughly researched to suit her customers’ needs and to suit certain shapes. A fuller breast or rounded tummy need a certain cut, not all suit everyone.

“I only buy certain styles in selected sizes, because I know what works for each customer” Glamorous brands include Roidal and designer Maryan Mehlhorn, where the quality and prices are high but reflect the internal courtesy, form fitting linings and pattern placements that complement the body for a skilful effect.

For excellent quality but lower price points, from £85, David has a range with power mesh linings and Sunflair offer great prints in form-fitting styles. Bikinis are sold in sets from £65 with integrated busts and gorgeous up-lifting prints.

There are vastly expensive luxury silk and lace nighties for those extra special nights to a very sweet pink design by Vanilla from £52. You can even buy the man in your life his swimming trunks so he can leave his ancient speedos at home.

Swimwear, like lingerie is a tricky one to buy online, you need friendly expert advice to get it right. So lets forget our British bashfulness and start enjoying the sun in our glorious swimmers.

You can either just pop in or book an appointment, allowing plenty of time to try on various shapes to find your ideal fit. The large changing rooms offer a discreet space for the coy and with Nicola’s passion for correct bra fitting and non pushy personal service you will most probably actually enjoy the process. Booking your holiday? Internet or local travel agent? Phil Kemp investigates for you... Never before has there been so much choice for travellers when it comes to researching and booking holidays. The internet has brought a mind-boggling explosion of outlets offering price comparisons for flights, accommodation, and holiday packages. The advent of mobile devices has also provided the ability to plan breaks away using everything from flight booking and budget hotel apps, to food spotting and translator apps when you’re on the ground and exploring your holiday destination. In the days before the internet broke free from its chains, we used to walk in to a travel shop and sit down in front of a real person. We would seek help and advice on everything from choice of destination, excursions and flights, and have the agent make our booking for us. So what has become of the traditional high street travel agent? I decided to find out by visiting local walk-in independent travel specialists. What I found was that not only are these travel retailers very much alive and kicking, they are also providing an incredible tailor-made personal service. Travel Dream in Bramley is owned by Jo Wishart and Pam Jackman, who between them have over 59 years’ experience in the travel industry. Their spacious Bramley office provides the chance to chat over a coffee and feel comfortable and reassured that you are in safe and experienced hands. “We are immensely proud of the fact that the majority of our clients come back year after year to take advantage of our completely hands-on and personal service for their holiday bookings,” said Jo. “We can instinctively match their travel aspirations, guided by decades of hard-earned experience of exactly what makes a holiday special. That is most important to us.” All of the agents I visited provide an exciting range of destinations and a good choice of different ways of getting there. Travel Dream’s latest magazine has holiday temptations ranging from sailing on a traditional sailing gulet in the Mediterranean, to the elegance of travelling by rail across Asia on the Eastern & Oriental Express. And much more besides. 12

They also talk of a new buzz word in luxury travel, this being ‘experiential’ and illustrate with opportunities for an intimate dinner for two on the Great Wall of China, or a stay in the Ice Hotel in Sweden whilst being mesmerised by the Northern Lights. “We know our clients personally. We find out exactly what their expectations are. Not just their likes and dislikes, but also their individual tastes when it comes to what is genuinely adventurous to them. We hand-deliver their tickets. We even remind regular clients when their passports are due for renewal. Our clients have our mobile numbers and we are available whenever they need us. You couldn’t dream of a much more personal service could you?” The Godalming Travel Company has at its helm Amanda Gore and Penny Brown, both with a great deal of experience in providing a personal service to holidaymakers. Between them they have travelled to many of the major holiday destivantagepointmag.co.uk

talk to us face-to-face in a really friendly, comfortable environment,” said Penny. “He felt as though he was sitting at home in his lounge chatting with a friend. That’s definitely something the internet cannot provide!” This standard of service undoubtedly makes for very special tailor-made holidays, right down to having dinner bookings made, excursions planned to slot effortlessly into your itinerary, and that welcome bottle of bubbly chilling in your room to mark a special occasion.

nations in the world and have a good rapport with tour operators and hoteliers. Like the other agents I visited, this makes providing travel advice so much more dependable. And they also go that extra mile to provide a special and personal service. “I can give you a perfect example of just how personal our approach is,” said Amanda. “A client’s son needed to visit American universities he had applied to. They had six days to visit five universities scattered across several states and were struggling to make the trip workable. With a lot of research and careful planning we put an itinerary together that worked for them. What made all the effort worthwhile was the call from a very proud father to let us know that his son had got into his chosen university and starts in August!” They too thrive on being able to sit with their clients and talk through travel plans in person. “One of our regular clients recently commented how lovely it was to be able to come in and July 2015

Over at Haslemere Travel, where they have a team of advisors and support staff, the message is also one of ensuring that all of their clients receive a highly personalised service. Managing Director Gemma Antrobus knows just how important this is, especially as she is also the Chairman of AITO. This is an association of independent travel agents, and Gemma is in the hot seat of knowing exactly what makes their 130 member companies successful and also what daily challenges they face. “Fly and flop beach holidays for families are very popular, but we have a range of options that go way beyond the standard brochure choices,” said Gemma. “We fully cater for those who want a taste of adventure or perhaps prefer culture-focused destinations. Short breaks, or year-long round-the-world tours. Honeymoons in exotic locations, or special excursions for groups with a particular focus. It may surprise you to know that we even book National Express tickets for some of our regular clients.” The latest edition of their Pure Shores newsletter illustrates what a remarkable range and exciting variety of holiday experiences is available. Quality and value for money is very important to their clients, as is the reassurance of a one-to-one personal service from a highly experienced team. “Forget all of the technology for a moment. The world maps we have hanging on the wall of our office are a brilliant focus for discussing destination, climate and time zones. Standing alongside these with our clients invariably stimulates much animated discussion and starts to vividly bring their holiday plans to life.” 13

Gemma was also keen to negate a common misapprehension. Independent agents do not charge their clients a fee for their booking services. In my visits I was also keen to find out what our independents felt about the internet. Gemma from Haslemere Travel had a very clear and positive response. “We embrace the internet because our experience has shown that many of our clients come in with some exciting ideas they have researched on the web. The task they set us is to meet their expectations and we enjoy exceeding them. Talking them through all the options and watching their approval when we not only make their itineraries work, but also meet their budgets too.” Penny from Godalming Travel gave me examples of where ‘budget’ bookings online can result in inferior accommodation, with hoteliers favouring clients of the travel operator they know personally. This relationship with the walk-in retailers can often ensure that upgrades are made, and in some cases at a cheaper price too. “What troubles us most are the stories we hear when things go wrong,” said Pam of Travel Dream. “Booking direct with travel providers on the web can leave travellers literally stranded when things go wrong. In most cases, using our contacts and inside knowledge of how the industry works, we’ve been able to help them out. It’s important to have the protection of booking with a fully licensed travel agent like ours. Your money is protected.”

The Godalming Travel Company

Booking directly online does potentially increase the risk of fraud. The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) reported that there were 1,569 cases of holiday fraud reported to them in 2014, with fraud relating to holiday accommodation being the most common. The advice from all three travel agents was clear and simple. Make sure you have the security of using an agent that is fully bonded and licenced. ABTA, the association of travel agents and tour operators, ensures that all members adhere to a code of conduct. ATOL is a Government guaranteed financial protection scheme for UK tour operators. Also for peace of mind check out the company thoroughly to find out they are who they say they are. Online forums can be helpful particularly if you’ve chosen a web provider for your holiday, although sometimes these can be used for gripes between operators - and a regular batch of glowing reports may suggest the reviews aren’t genuine. A lack of a real address or telephone landline should ring alarm bells. For my money, sitting in front of a real person with buckets of experience in a real office, and sipping a cup of coffee is absolutely unbeatable. You benefit from their extensive network of 14

GUTS MOTOR TOUR 2015 Come and join the four wheeled fun on 6th September

The 12th annual GUTS Motor Tour takes place this year on 6th September and will be visiting Cowdray Park and finishing at the Weald & Downland Museum near Chichester. The tour usually comprises up to 60 veteran, vintage and classic cars and it will travel around 50-60 miles through lovely countryside with a fiendish picture quiz to keep entrants on their toes. The reason they do this, apart from the joy of driving fabulous cars through beautiful countryside alongside like minded enthusiasts, is to raise money for GUTS (Guildford Undetected Tumour Screening). GUTS was founded in 1983 and initiated one of the first bowel cancer mass screening programmes in the UK, reaching 20,000 patients from GP practices in the Guildford area in its first year. Since then GUTS funding has been pivotal both in research to advance screening and detection, and in improving the care, treatment and outcomes for patients from across the south of England. Their screening programme has sent out over 50,000 blood testing kits across southern England, and GUTS-funded

research projects have contributed to a better understanding of colorectal cancer. Since the motor tour was first started by Sarah Grillo, it has raised over £30,000 for GUTS. The tour raised over £2,000 last year thanks to entrants and companies who helped donate raffle prizes. These included Swain & Jones, Mercure Burford Bridge Hotel, Silver Mist Leisure, Bel & the Dragon, Grayshott Spa, Forest Foragers, GLive and Champneys. So if you would like to join them this year on 6th September, please email gutsmotortour@ gmail.com or call Stefan Reynolds on 01483 421601 for a booking form. Places are limited to 60, so bookings will be on a first come first served basis.

Picnic to Music in the Park is taking place this year on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July, at the King George V Playing Fields in Farnborough; the event will feature two sensational tribute acts, along with Britain’s biggest Motown phenomenon. Saturday’s line-up boasts the Counterfeit Stones, whose popularity has gained them bookings from British royalty and famous international celebrities, and led them to be dubbed by Mick Jagger himself as ‘the most famous Stones band in England’ – and the stunning Counterfeit Police, one of Europe’s principal tribute bands whose lead singer’s uncanny resemblance to Sting will have you believing you’re watching the real thing! On the Sunday, The Magic of Motown will then take to the stage, celebrating 50 years of Motown music with classics from the Four Tops, Supremes, Jackson 5,

Dennis Brothers - the post war years Britain’s oldest vehicle manufacturer was established in Guildford. In the second in a series, Andy Goundry continues the story. The end of the Great War brought a sudden and dramatic change to the fortunes of the Dennis company. From working almost flat-out producing trucks for the War Department, the order book vanished almost overnight as the vast fleet of vehicles which Dennis had toiled so hard to produce began to find their way back to Britain, to be sold off for civilian use, thereby reducing dramatically the opportunities for new vehicle sales. This left Dennis with an almost insurmountable problem: they had one of the biggest truckmaking factories in Europe, capable of building around 2,500 trucks per year, and a very limited market. Lesser companies might have thrown in the towel there and then, however the Dennis brothers picked themselves up and set out to develop both new markets and new models. The latter was an inspired move, for if WWI had done nothing else, it had firmly established the superiority of trucks rather than horses to move goods. Whilst the market was saturated with large numbers of ex-military trucks, they were limited to a 3 tonne payload. Dennis realised that higher capacity models would generate sales, and so introduced both 4 and 5 tonne versions of the original army truck. These were successful in recovering some of the lost sales; then, as now, the concept of one man, or truck, being able to do more than his competitors, was attractive to customers. Raymond Dennis also set out on a marathon 60,000 mile world tour to promote Dennis products, highlighting the reliability of the military vehicles, to say nothing of the fire engines whose performance was becoming legendary. Indeed, in 1917 a Dennis fire engine had pumped water continuously for 17 days to help combat a huge fire in Salonika (now Thessaloniki) in Greece. In seeking new markets, Dennis astutely investigated opportunities to offer innovative products into markets where the Dennis brand was already well understood and respected. 20

This lovely old Dennis Dart belongs to the company, and can often be seen around Guildford. Shown here on wedding transport duty with the author in the front seat.

He also targeted markets which could make use of some of their existing technology, thus avoiding too much of a leap into the dark. Two interesting new ventures sought to strengthen the Dennis relationship with local authorities, quickly becoming successful businesses in their own right. Firstly, drawing on their experience with fire pumps, they launched an innovative vacuum cesspool emptier which was quickly taken up by their target local authority market. This laid the foundations for the municipal vehicle market for which Dennis subsequently became a by-word. The other new venture was into the manufacture of motor mowers, and specifically large machines which enabled the local authorities to keep their many hectares of parkland in trim. Again, Dennis were quick to promote the efficiency benefits of their product, proudly proclaiming that one man with a Dennis mower could cut in a day as much as two men and a horse could cut in two days. Dennis mowers went on to carve out a successful business for over 50 years, indeed they are still manufactured, although no longer part of the original Dennis empire, having been sold off in 1976. Despite these brave efforts to regenerate the business, orders for Dennis trucks remained in the doldrums until the mid-1920’s, when the company launched a successful new 30cwt (1.5 tonne) payload truck, set apart from its competitors by the use of robust truck components compared to the lighter and shorter-lived car components used by others. This approach was, interestingly, mirrored by the company almost sixty years later when the Dennis Dart midibus took the bus market by storm. vantagepointmag.co.uk

These are still widely used today (photo: Dennis Mowers); Development of a lowered chassis frame meant that double-deckers could at last have a solid upper deck roof to protect the passengers from the elements (photo: Showbus); This superbly restored Dennis Ace fuel tanker is locally owned by Joe Devanny, and can regularly be seen at the Goodwood Revival. Photo: J Devanny

The latter half of the 1920’s saw the Dennis market for buses and coaches grow significantly, with new models appearing regularly, championing the latest technology. The first bus to be equipped with pneumatic tyres, for example, was a Dennis, as was the first bus fitted with four-wheel brakes. Development of specific models aimed at carrying passengers rather than goods also meant that floor levels were lowered, meaning fewer steps for the passengers to climb. 1927 saw the introduction of another first for Dennis – their purpose designed double-decker. Although double deckers had been around for some time before this, in both horse-drawn and later motorised form, they were invariably based on a goods vehicle chassis. This meant they were comparatively tall, making a solid roof impractical. The Dennis H Type of 1927, in contrast, had a low frame, enabling a solid roof to be fitted, setting the scene for the widespread adoption of double deckers in years to come. As the 1930’s dawned, a relentless introduction of new and enhanced models continued apace, all promoting the traditional Dennis virtues of quality, performance, and reliability. These benefits came at a price, making Dennis products amongst the more expensive in the market. By this time, however, the world was sliding headlong into the Great Depression, and in those times of austerity, the expensive Dennis products, however good, were finding fewer customers. Once again, Dennis were forced to rethink their product strategy, and rapidly introduced the Lancet, a low-cost single deck bus, which sold for £595 against their previous single decker, which was massively more, at £1,095. Unsurprisingly, the Lancet became a great success, doing much to see the Dennis business through the gloomy days of the Depression, particularly with the truck-making arm of the business struggling due to the economy. Indeed, throughout the history of Dennis, the bus business proved to be surprisingly resistant to economic depression, and this was not the only occasion where it kept the company afloat. Other noteworthy Dennis models of the 1930s included the Dart bus, of which one survives today in the hands of the company, and which can often be seen at rallies. On the truck side, Dennis produced a rather unusual-looking, but very successful range called the Ace. Key to the Ace was that July 2015

the front axle was set well back, giving excellent manoeuvrability, but meaning that the engine and radiator were positioned well forward like a snout. Small wonder that the Ace soon became unofficially named the ‘Flying Pig’. In 1934, Dennis acquired land around the Woodbridge factory on which to build homes for their increasing number of workers. The resulting estate, Dennisville, has most of the roads named after senior Dennis people, notably Raymond Crescent & St John’s Road. Overall, Dennis had coped well since WWI, rising well to the challenges of the lack of new vehicle orders, the years of recession and fending off the growing number of competitors such as Leyland and Bedford. Sadly, however, in May 1938 Sir Raymond Dennis passed away at the early age of 59, followed only three months later by his brother John, precipitating the company into major changes at the top. At the same time the gathering storm clouds of WWII were about to force Dennis into yet more major upheaval. ABOUT THE AUTHOR About the author: Andy Goundry spent his working career in vehicle design and development, with almost 20 years in senior engineering and management roles at Dennis. Since retirement he has continued a close involvement with vehicles, writing for specialist magazines and websites, as well as producing his own motoring website www.autonews. uk.com. © Andy Goundry December 2014

Meet the Producer Whether the weather is hot or cold, children and adults flock to Dylan’s ice cream van at the Farnham Farmers’ Market. Farnham Town Council met up with Ben to discover what makes the ice cream so popular. Dylan’s ice cream was founded by Ben Govier and is named after the family’s much-missed black Labrador. Ben has been making ice cream since he was a boy and uses only the freshest of ingredients to make the best possible ice cream. Much of the fruit is sourced from local growers – strawberries come from Bishops Waltham, blackberries from a smallholding in Guildford and rhubarb from Ben’s Mum’s allotment. The milk comes from a farm in Froxfield and the sugar is British-grown beet. The ice cream on offer changes to suit the season. Naturally ripened fruit gives the ice cream an intense delicious flavour, which conjures up fond memories of long summer days or beautiful, crisp autumn mornings. Ben’s mission is to make the best ice cream using natural ingredients and local produce to make unique flavours. If you have an idea for a new flavour, let Ben know and he’ll be happy to give it a try. Ben has been attending the Farnham Farmers’ Market for several years. He plans to be at the July market along with supplies of tayberry ice cream but be quick as the fruit is only in season for two weeks! For more information about the Farnham Farmers’ Market visit www.farnham.gov.uk. To find out more about Dylan’s ice cream, the ice cream parlour at Haslemere or to book a Dylan’s ice cream van for an event, visit www.dylansicecream.co.uk.

Spruce up Farnham It’s the twenty-fifth anniversary of Farnham in Bloom and the judges will soon be here. Please help us to show Farnham at its best by picking up litter, having a window box or making a special effort in planting your front garden. Please also tell us about any graffiti you see at www.farnham.gov.uk/report. We will find out the result in September and will publish it on our website as soon as we hear.

Update on Farnham’s neighbourhood plan Following the end of the public consultation in December, we have been busy consulting with statutory consultees such as Natural England, Surrey Highways, Surrey Education, Thames Water and South East Water. The consultees were asked whether there would be provision and/or ability for services to cope with the additional number of people that would result from the proposed site allocations. The feedback will be used to inform the final draft of the neighbourhood plan. The next stage of the plan involves us having further meeting with landowners. We will also be meeting again with Natural England and Waverley Borough Council to discuss suitable green spaces that would support the housing proposals. To register to receive updates on the neighbourhood plan, please email neighbourhood.plan@farnham.gov.uk.

BECOME A LOCAL DETECTIVE A Farnham business holds the clues to summer fun

Love treasure hunts? Fancy being a local detective? There are two new treasure trails to tease your clue-hunting skills around Farnham this summer and they are suitable for youngsters and adults alike. The trails follow a set route (‘Castle and Town’ or ‘Maltings and Meadows’) and each has a mystery story behind it with a puzzle to solve. Intrepid trail goers are encouraged to follow directions and hunt for clues as they eliminate answers in the trail booklet. Get the answer correct and your name will be entered into a £1000 national prize draw, courtesy of national publishers Treasure Trails (www.treasuretrails.co.uk). “The two things I love most about Treasure Trails,” comments Kathy Brown, a local resident and creator of the two Farnham trails, “are that they help you to see the curiosities on your doorstep which you have never noticed before; and secondly, that they are such great conversation starters. They are a brilliant activity for grandparents to do with grandchildren, for example, to share an experience and prompt discussion on all sorts of topics as you explore a neighbourhood and solve the puzzle together.” Kathy’s Farnham-based company Discovery Games Ltd is all about treasure hunts and games, and not just for families either. As well as writing the treasure trails for Farnham, London, Kent, Essex and the Isle of Wight (they are the authorised Treasure Trails gold partner for the region), they offer treasure hunt activities for school groups and for businesses. Their catalogue of packaged puzzle trails and games for teams (www.discoverygamesuk.com) is popular with school parties and foreign student groups visiting Britain who are looking for a different way to explore, learn and have fun. “We’ve got some brilliant games in London, Cambridge, Oxford and Canterbury that cater for larger groups and non-native En-

glish speakers. We’ve just published a Rochester ‘Dickens’ mystery and our next game will be a codebreaker challenge set in Old Portsmouth and Southsea. These are great for schooltrips as they combine history and geography, numeracy, literacy and logic skills – all out in the fresh air. Not to mention the soft skills that students develop through teamwork.” Teamwork is key to other areas of the business too. Under the banner of London Business Games (www.londonbusinessgames.com), Kathy provides clue-hunting team building games for businesses of all sizes. “We’ve catered for teams from all sectors – government, manufacturing, retail and charities, inside and outside of London, on foot and in vehicles,” she explains. “Clue-hunting street games are an ideal and inclusive way to put your staff ’s teamwork skills to the test. We incorporate techniques which build on crucial areas such as communication, decision-making and role development.” Size of group is no obstacle either; in 2012 Kathy was an Ambassador for the London Olympic Games and put together a record-breaking treasure hunt with 466 participants, all Team London Ambassadors, around the City of London. Discovery Games has also been commissioned to create a number of bespoke clue-hunt activities for communities across the south east. These include trade associations, conferences, county fairs and summer shows, campsites, housing estates and local community groups. HINTON AMPNER

See Tudor history revealed, plus explorer trail and maze

This summer visitors to the National Trust’s idyllic Hinton Ampner estate in Hampshire can take part in an exciting moment in history as archaeologists excavate the foundations of Hinton Ampner’s original Tudor house. Chat with the team as they gradually reveal this 16th century building, have a go at excavating with the team, and take in the Big Dig site. Plus there are amazing views over the South Downs - from a scaffold platform (minimum height 1m 20cm). There are mini excavation pits and tools for children, and an Indiana Jones-style trail that takes children on an adventure leading to hidden treasure in the park’s straw bale maze. Louise Washington, Hinton’s visitor experience and events officer, said “We’re really excited about hosting such an important archaeological dig, and even better, to be able to share it as it happens, with our visitors. We have no idea what we’ll find, but people will be able to chat with the archaeology team as they work, and find out more about the equipment they’re using and what they’ve discovered.” “You’ll get a good view of the site from the ground, but a fabulous aerial view from our scaffold platform on the

house, which also takes in huge views over the South Downs” reveals Louise. “Children can use smaller tools to dig for ‘treasure’ in our mini excavation sandpit sites, and on top of that, we’ve got our explorer trail, which runs throughout the school holidays and takes children on a real adventure through the gardens and into our ancient parkland where we’ve built a huge straw maze.” The Tudor house at Hinton Ampner has one of the best documented ghost stories in our history, yet very little is known about the house’s appearance, and until last year, the whereabouts of the foundations were also a mystery. A recent geophysical survey has now revealed that the remains of the house lie underneath the East Lawn. The Big Dig: excavation in action from 15th – 19th July. Scaffold tours and summer explorer trail from 15th July – 1st September. Normal property charge, plus donations for scaffold tour and trail. FIND OUT MORE

GARDEN

After Chelsea

With Beth Otway

Each of the gardens at this year’s Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show were so different, all of them having a beauty, style, inspiration and charm of their own. It’s quite incredible how all the plants and materials for the show gardens are brought into the Royal Hospital Grounds at Chelsea; the gardens are then expertly created in just a matter of weeks. Of course, what is so amazing about being able to bring gardens into the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in this way, is that the gardens can be removed in the same carefully planned way, and they can then be rebuilt elsewhere for many more people to enjoy in the future.

This award-winning garden was designed to be a welcoming, peaceful space; a place of retreat and comfort for people affected by breast cancer.

Sensational strawberries It must be summer because Secretts Pick Your Own (PYO) is now open and the strawberry crop is ready for picking! The epitome of English summer time, fresh strawberries still hold the title of the nation’s favourite field fruit. And there can be no denying that the very best way to enjoy them is to get out there and pick your own…it’s simply not possible to get them any fresher! This year a careful planting programme of ‘60 day plants’ means that the strawberry crop will continue throughout the PYO season until mid September. All strawberries are now grown using a tabletop system in polytunnels at Secretts Farm. The resulting benefits are that picking need not be affected by the odd rainy day and there is no more crouching on the ground…what’s not to like! VantagePoint readers can enjoy a discount of £1 off per kilo of strawberries picked at the PYO this summer. Just bring along your copy of the magazine to claim the discount. Whilst we all enjoy strawberries served simply with a sprinkle of sugar and a dollop of double cream, if you fancy trying something different why not experiment with one of these simple recipes…..

Strawberry, Smoked Chicken & Fennel Salad Ingredients 200g smoked chicken breast 1 bulb of fennel (trimmed, cored and cut into fine strips) 1 bag of Secretts Rocket leaves 200g Secretts strawberries (hulled and halved) Dressing 4 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 tsp wholegrain mustard 1 tsp runny honey Method • Combine all of the dressing ingredients by whisking together in a small bowl or jug. • Combine all of the salad ingredients and arrange the sliced smoked chicken on top. • Just before serving drizzle with the dressing and a good grind of black pepper. • Serve with crusty wholemeal bread and a glass of prosecco! 38

FOOD Strawberry Ice Cream Ingredients 500g ripe Secretts strawberries 200g caster sugar 500g tub of crème fraîche Method • Remove the hulls from the strawberries and crush with a fork to form a rough puree. • Combine the strawberries with the crème fraîche and decant into a freezer proof tub. • Pop in the freezer for around 90 minutes, then whisk thoroughly before returning to the freezer for another 60 minutes. Remove and whisk again and then return to the freezer cover and allow to freeze right through. • Transfer the container to the fridge about 20 minutes before serving to allow the ice cream to soften slightly. • Serve in cones or sundae dishes with a sprinkle of chopped almonds and pistachios.

Secretts Summer Pudding Ingredients 800g of summer fruits from Secretts PYO; a mixture of strawberries, raspberries, black and red currants works best. 150g caster sugar 7- 8 slices of white bread Clotted cream to serve

• Rinse the fruit and combine with the sugar in a saucepan. Cook gently over a low heat 8-10 minutes until the sugar has dissolved and the fruit is slightly softened. • Butter a 1.5 pint pudding basin and line with the bread slices ensuring there are no gaps. • Pour the fruit and most of the juice into the basin on top of the bread (reserving about a cupful of juice).

• Cover the fruit with another slice of bread and then cover with a small plate or saucer. Weigh the plate down with a 3-4lb weight and leave in the fridge overnight. • To serve turn the pudding out onto a serving dish and spoon over the reserved juice. • Serve with an enormous dollop of Cornish clotted cream!

Secretts PYO is open 7 days a week from 9am – 5.30pm. They are delighted to launch the PYO café new for this season, serving light lunches, teas and coffees. Don’t forget to take your copy of VantagePoint to get your £1 discount per kilo on PYO strawberries! July 2015

The Carillon Singers based in Badshot Lea have recently completed their bi-annual tour this year visiting the lovely green and rolling landscape of Devon. Their first concert proved to be a tremendous success as it was a ‘first-off ’ for not only the Choir but HMP Dartmoor! Apparently, the captive audience was hugely appreciative! The choir rehearses in St George’s Church Hall in Badshot Lea on Thursday evenings from 7.30 to 9.45pm. The Carillon Singers have become well known in the area giving regular concerts in their ‘home church’, other churches, halls and residential homes raising funds for charities and other organisations. They are booked to present a Summer Concert at one of their regular venues and have further bookings for a number of Christmas Concerts including St George’s. They are a friendly group and always welcome new members (especially men!). Visit the website where there are contact details for anyone wanting to go along and give the choir a try. www.carillonsingers.co.uk. The event takes place on Friday September 4th and includes coach travel from Guildford Rugby Club, with refreshments served at the club prior to departure. The state rooms are furnished with many of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Van Dyck and Canaletto, sculpture by Canova, exquisite pieces of Sèvres porcelain, and some of the finest English and French furniture in the world. Tickets are £60 and are available to purchase online at www.gutsfbc.co.uk/events or call the GUTS fundraising office on 01483 408316. All profits from the event will support the charity’s work, which aims to improve bowel cancer survival rates through better screening and treatment, and by raising awareness of the disease. Phyllis Tuckwell’s hugely popular Dash of Colour will be taking place again this year, on Saturday 5th September. It’s a Fun Run with a difference – at every kilometre mark along the 5k route, participants are showered in colourful powder paint, symbolising the colour which Phyllis Tuckwell brings to the lives of its patients and their relatives. The event is open to everyone aged five upwards but, even though the paint is completely harmless, the charity advises that it will be noisy, messy, and may be overwhelming for younger children. The event was launched last year and over 800 people took part, raising an amazing £41,500 for the Hospice Care charity, which supports patients and relatives facing a serious progressive illness, such as cancer or motor neurone disease. Chawton - figure of eight This walk takes you through pretty woods and fields around Chawton in Hampshire. You may, of course, choose to tackle only one of the loops and spend time visiting Jane Austen’s house. The walk was submitted by Guildford Rambling Club (see guildfordramblingclub.org.uk).

The walk Option 1 – 4.5 miles - Chawton to Farringdon. 1. Start from the centre of Chawton in the small car park beside the Cassandra’s Cup café (10am to 4.30pm, but only lunches between 12 noon and 2.30pm). On leaving the car park turn left into the dead end road. Pass the school and later the church (on your left). Also see Chawton House on the higher ground behind the Church of St Nicholas. In the churchyard, at the back, are the graves of Jane Austen’s mother and her sister, Cassandra. The building is Victorian since the church was rebuilt in 1871 after a disastrous fire. 2. Continue along the road to its end and then on along a path in trees. Quickly reach a stile, left, onto a broad grassy track. Go right and parallel to the A32. (This used to be the Gosport turnpike road in Jane Austen’s time). Another stile takes you half-right across a field and through Noar Copse, leading to higher ground beyond. Keep straight on to Berryhill Plantation and continue along the track which is bordered by tall Wellington trees, giving way to yew trees as you descend into Upper Farringdon. 3. Turn left at the edge of the houses. Go through a farmyard with Manor Farm house on your left. Turn right, just beyond a barn on mushroom pillars, towards a large red brick building and then left into the churchyard (hidden in trees) of All Saints. Walk forward from the church porch to a lane. Turn left and, after a short distance, turn right into Crow Lane. Continue along this to reach the Rose and Crown Inn at the T junction with Hall Lane. Turn right and continue straight on between attractive cottages on either side. 4. Turn right into Church Road and take the footpath by the telephone box at the entrance to Parsonage Close and then, on passing the playground, again turn left along track. Reach and 42

cross the A32, with care. Follow the road opposite until a footpath leads off to the right, just before a bridge. 5. Follow this path as it takes you down and along the disused Meon Valley railway line which ran between Alton and Fareham. Continue to the end of the railway track and then along a field edge to the far side where the path turns right. After 50 yards the path turns left into a clump of trees. Go through and on the far side follow a green St Swithun’s Way arrow right. Reach steps down to the A32. Cross, with care. Go up steps and left over a stile and continue along a fenced corridor to Ferney Close. Turn left at the end and walk into the village. You could lunch in Chawton or you could picnic in the little park next to the car park. Option 2 – 5 miles - Chawton to Chawton Park Wood 1. Walk back up to the A31 roundabout. Go straight across and up the road opposite. Go under a railway bridge (the Watercress Line) and, a little way beyond it (point * for later in the walk) , turn left along a lane, National Cycle Route 23. Walk for over 1.25 vantagepointmag.co.uk

WALK

miles whilst you pass a few houses, the lane becomes a track, you ignore rights, you pass a Chawton Farm information plaque and go through various gates. Much of this will have been on a wide straight track through Chawton Park Wood. Eventually the trees are further back from the track and you pass a wide grassy track left, up into the trees. 2. Then, 250 yards later, you take another wide dirt track left and climb a long slope. At the top, at a cross path (wide on the right, narrow on the left), go left. The path winds through close trees and then across a more open stretch with lumps and bumps. Reach a T junction with a wide dirt track and go left. You are on Peter Wyke’s Way and you will walk along it for about 1.25 miles. The first 600 yards bring you to Bricklin Farm. You go straight through and follow the path past Tongham Auto Club’s race track and eventually emerge on the road close to point *. Turn right, walk to the A31, cross and walk back to the start. PROFILE

Wrecclesham Community Centre Situated in Greenfield Road, Wrecclesham Community Centre is a community project that is providing valuable services and social activities for many local people. Activities at Wrecclesham Community Centre Every Tuesday morning a group of local people meet up at the Centre for a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits or home-made cake. Some of them live alone and it is a valued opportunity for them to get out and enjoy the company of friends and neighbours. Later in the day there is a yoga and a gentle exercise class, much appreciated by those who take part. On Wednesdays, Sure Start welcomes single parents with small children and on Thursdays there are IT classes for the over 50s and for people looking for a job. The Citizen’s Advice Bureau holds a clinic at the Centre on Thursday mornings. Three times a week Farnham Dance organises ballet and tap dance classes for young children. The Centre is also the permanent base for the Farnham and District Model Railway Society. Once a month volunteers cook Sunday lunch for up to 30 local residents who live on their own. Members of the Grace Baptist church worship there on Sundays. All this and more in a building that a few years ago looked like it would be abandoned and possibly demolished. About Wrecclesham Community Centre The Centre was originally owned by Surrey County Council and used as a Youth Centre. In 1998 the Council closed the building because of policy changes. Realising the need for some sort of community facility, a group of volunteers from St Peter’s church set up a committee to rescue and revitalise the Centre. For some years they continued to operate the Youth Club but in 2003 Surrey decided to sell the building. With the generous help of Sir Ray Tindle it was bought from the Council. A section of land was sold off for development to recoup the cost, and subsequently the centre was donated in 2007 to Farnham Town Council. Meanwhile the Management Committee 44

had registered the Centre as a Charity, as a resource for the whole community, and a 10-year lease was signed between Farnham Town Council and the Trustees. Having been built in the 1960s, the building was beginning to look shabby and needed regular maintenance. This was generously undertaken by Farnham Town Council. Gradually more users came along but wider usage was restricted by the deteriorating condition of the facilities, particularly the kitchen and toilets. In spite of this, in 2011 the Wrecclesham Community Project was successfully formed with representatives from Waverley Borough Council, local schools and other interested parties in order to encourage greater participation by the local community. In 2012 it merged with the Management Committee to form a single organising body. In 2013 Farnham Town Council and the Trustees decided that the future of the Centre was conditional on a major refurbishment. Applications were made to grant-giving organisations for the £200,000 needed to update the building and make it user friendly. There was generous support from the Landfill Funds, Veolia and SITA together with Surrey County Council, Waverley Borough Council, Farnham Town Council itself and local charities including The Farnham Institute Charity and Isabella Schroder Trust. Once the funds were raised the work was carried out in 2014. The leaky flat roof was replaced by a more practical and attractive sloping one, a new storage area was built and the interior was extensively refurbished and redecorated. The ‘new’ building was reopened in May 2014 by local MP Jeremy Hunt. Since then new users have come in and the Centre is currently host to a wide range of educational and leisure activities. It is increasingly popular as a venue for birthday parties and other private celebrations by local residents. A once dying asset has been brought to useful life again by the commitment of volunteers and local government funders. FIND OUT MORE

I know it seems ages away, but I thought I’d let you know that the world’s most famous Beatles tribute band, The Bootleg Beatles, are returning to G Live in Guildford on Wednesday 23rd March 2016. We went to see them last time and they are fantastic. I gather that you can book tickets now; just don’t forget that you booked them come next March! There is a growing excitement amongst therapists about the benefits of structured LEGO clubs for building social and communication skills amongst children, especially children who struggle in this area. St Mark’s Church in Upper Hale has decided to give this a go, but volunteer helpers are needed to make the project a success. . The children are in groups of three with an adult supervisor. LEGO enthusiasts are wanted for a few hours a month to help run this exciting new venture. Full training will be provided and there will be a requirement to be DBS checked and to attend safeguarding training. For more information call Jane Voake, on 07827 567014 or email: jane.voake@cofeguildford.org.uk. Walking is a wonderful form of natural exercise; simple and effective. A small gremlin crept into last month’s issue on the 100th birthday of the WI and it is best not to upset them as Tony Blair did a few years ago! So we have been asked to clarify that Churt WI meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 2.30pm in the Churt Village Hall and not as published. Churt WI is one of the longest running WI’s in the this area, having been founded in July 1919, and so will be celebrating their own 100th Birthday in just 4 years time. A word of warning so readers are not caught out. The National Trust looks after Frensham Little Pond and has recently taken the decision to introduce car parking charges to visitors. Since the repair of the medieval dam in 2013, which cost nearly £350,000, and the opening of the Tern café in 2015, Frensham has seen its visitor figures increasing year on year. Conservation and care of the natural environment are the key concerns of Britain’s largest conservation charity and by introducing a set car parking charge of £4 per car, the Trust will be able to go some way to fund the extensive and expensive care of this Site of Special Scientific Interest. Visitors are able to become members of the National Trust at the Tern café at Frensham Little Pond, or at nearby Hindhead Commons and the Devil’s Punch Bowl. Car parking is free for National Trust members at all of their sites. Alternatively, visitors will be able to pay £4 to park at Frensham Little Pond at the car parking machines in the car park, using either coins or the “Ringo” telephone system. FIND OUT MORE
