THE EDITOR'S NOTE I am really delighted with our lead article this month on Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, which I hope will shed some light on not only this important community role but also some of the people behind it. It has been a pleasure to have met both Michael More-Molyneux and Bill Biddell and there is no doubt that they are two of the most dedicated people you could hope to meet. I know that they work enormously hard, take their responsibilities very seriously and give of their time freely, like so many others who also play an active, if less formal and high profile, role in community life. We are lucky to have them representing us. We should also thank Sarah More-Molyneux and Bridget Biddell for the support they give to their husbands. Attending lots of engagements and functions is really not as glamorous as it sounds! One of the Lord-Lieutenant’s roles is to present the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services to volunteer groups and I am pleased that so many local groups whom we have and continue to support in VantagePoint have been honoured with this prestigious award. It is a real thank you to everyone involved in those groups and I know first-hand just what receiving this award means to them.

Albury Organic Vineyard

Phil Kemp meets the team who are passionate about organic viticulture and biodynamics – and discovers many other surprises too. THE FAMILY-OWNED Albury Vineyard nestles on the southfacing slopes of the North Downs in the picturesque Surrey Hills, right alongside the supposedly ghostly Silent Pool. They produce award-winning wines, but perhaps what makes them stand out from the growing number of successful English vineyards is their bold and imaginative engagement with organic and biodynamic wines.

school’s prize for economics on speech day. We were allowed to choose the book we were to be awarded - and much to his annoyance I had chosen The World Atlas of Wines and Spirits! But it took me some 35 years or so before I actually realised my dream.”

I was invited to meet Nick Wenman and Lucy Letley, the father and daughter team who founded the vineyard in 2008, to discover what is motivating them in what is undoubtedly a challenging but successful journey. The response to my initial question as to how it all started was to set me on the path of a fascinating story.

Seated in their vineyard barn, which serves both as their wine and cheese tasting venue and shop, I had a good view of the vines stretching up the slopes towards the top of the downs.

“My dream of owning a vineyard started in my late teens,” Nick explained. “I still have the wonderful memory of my headmaster’s expression when he presented me with the

“Growing vines is an extremely long-term business. Our original plan was for a 12 or 13-year return on our investment,” Nick explained, and turning towards his daughter added: “But I now see it in terms of generational – so no pressure there then Lucy!” They both laughed out loud. I did however get a very quick impression of how committed the whole team are, which includes their vineyard manager Alex Valsecchi and her assistant Dominic Travers. From my visits to other English vineyards, I was already aware of the considerable threats that viticulturalists face in successfully growing their vines, but at Albury they have extra challenges. “In common with all vineyards, in the growing season we have to guard against both downy and powdery mildews. However, growing organically means we can’t use

ALBURY ORGANIC VINEYARD earth and the plant and the cosmos. And I guess there are broadly two things that we do to try and achieve that. One is that we do our best to follow cycles of the moon and its position in the cosmos. The moon’s gravitational impact will affect the sap flow of the plants so that there are certain days when we might prune, spray or pick for example. And the other thing we do is make lots of natural spray teas and use natural plant preparations in our compost which we make here. The tea we spray over the vines improves their vitality and suppresses disease.” I must confess that this was a new concept for me and I could perhaps understand why, in Lucy’s words, some people might think it sounds a bit crazy. But I was genuinely intrigued, and what Nick explained next reeled me in. He pointed to a large cow horn mounted to the wall behind us. “We gather together cow horns and stuff them with manure from a cow that has recently given birth and is therefore rich and organic manure. We then bury them in the vineyard to over-winter. Come the spring we dig them up by which time they will have fermented and absorbed all of the sub-micro elements from the vineyard.” They then remove the contents and make a tea to spray on the vineyard to improve its vitality. What a concept - but it actually originated at the beginning of the 20th century in Austria in response to increasingly sterile soil on farms. “By the look on your face I’m surprised you haven’t asked if we dance naked on the vineyard too!” laughed Lucy. “But in reality, many great wines of the world come from biodynamic vineyards.”

the effective systemic chemicals but have to take preventative measures using organic friendly sprays without herbicides and pesticides, which makes life a lot harder. And it’s the same in the winery too where the grapes are processed.” Lucy had placed a selection of bottles on the table to show the range of wines they produce, with these including their gold award-winning Sparkling Rose, Classic Cuvée and Blanc de Blancs. However for me one immediately stood out. Their Biodynamic Wild Ferment. “Ah, I wondered when you were going to ask about that!” Nick quipped. “Put simply, biodynamics is a sort of holistic approach to horticulture and viticulture. What we’re trying to do is get a harmony between the

And there was much, much more, to come. However, as space here doesn’t allow I’d thoroughly recommend a visit. You won’t be disappointed. Whilst there be sure to ask about the half a million bees they have in hives - and do taste their Albury Honey and Surrey Hills Mead. Don’t miss out on the brandy that they make from late pressings of their grapes and ferment in little oak barrels. 5 Easy-to-make Christmas Cards DIFFICULTY:  (easy)

FUN: 

(lots!)

COST:  (£0-£3)

WITH CHRISTMAS just around the corner many of us are busy writing greeting cards for our friends, colleagues, and loved ones. This month I’ll show you how to make some really easy and stylish cards using reusable materials that you can easily gather from around your house. This little project can also turn into an activity with your children from the age of 4 onwards. Gather all of the materials. You will need: some thick card, some white paper, some brown packing paper, a page from an old newspaper or magazine, (or old musical sheets if you have any) some tin foil or gift wrapping paper (a sparkly one would work really well). You will also need a glue stick, PVA glue, and a few different scissors: one with a decorative edge, one for paper and some small metal scissors. Also a black ink pen and some glitter. Firstly, with your plain paper scissors, cut out the thick card (e.g. size: 5.8 x 8.3 in) and fold it in half. Then, with your decorative edge scissors, cut the brown packing paper into a smaller square or rectangle and stick it on the front of your card using the glue stick.

1

Heart Decorations Cards

Cut out little hearts or stars using either the magazines, the musical sheets, the foil, or the wrapping paper. You will only need a few for each card. To ensure that the hearts are symmetrical, fold the paper in half and cut just half of the heart from the edge. Stick one half down and leave the other half unglued; this will give your card a three dimensional element to it.

2

Silver Stars Cards

Cut out little stars and stick them in the middle of your card using a drop of PVA glue just in the middle and leaving the ‘arms’ of the star detached from the surface. Once again, you can use foil, musical sheets or Christmas wrapping paper for the star.

3

Snowflakes

These are quite intricate little designs; so I would recommend using small metal scissors (eg: bathroom scissors). If you are doing this project with your children, cut out the shapes for them and get them to stick them on the card. Once again, fold the square piece of paper into triangles and cut half of the snowflake from the edge.

4

Christmas Trees

Cut out three triangles (small to large) using either tin foil or cup cake wrappers. Stick them on the card with PVA glue on the front of your card. Let it dry for about one hour, then apply some final touches with the black ink pen. A star on the top of the tree, a tree trunk, and decorative motives such as words and dots.

5

Little Christmas Presents

Cut little squares out of some Christmas wrapping paper. Stick them on the front of the card. Then, cut out little pieces of ribbon and stick them in a cross on top of the squares. Draw the little bow on top of each Christmas Present. Add words to further decorate your design.

Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey Phil Kemp discovers what duties our representative of the Crown undertakes and how these directly benefit the local community. I was invited to meet Michael MoreMolyneux, who was appointed LordLieutenant in 2015, to explore the multiple roles he undertakes on behalf of The Queen. We were joined by his Vice Lord-Lieutenant Bill Biddell on what for me proved to be a very engaging journey. I must confess that, probably in common with many other Surrey residents, having seen their military-style uniform at events, I assumed all the activity was just handshaking pomp and little more. I very quickly started to appreciate that their responsibilities far exceeded my very simplistic view. “The position of Lord Lieutenant is one of being the Queen’s representative for the county,” Michael started to explain. “There are several responsibilities. Number one are the royal visits, and we have something like 30 royal visits a year to manage. We are also actively involved with local charities, volunteer groups, local businesses and the magistracy.” I knew that the Lieutenancy had its origins during the 16th century and to put

everything in context asked for a potted history. “It started in Henry VIII’s time and was essentially a military position. Although nowadays we don’t have any direct military involvement, we do still have a uniform based on a general’s rank,” said Michael. “Originally the High Sheriff was responsible for raising the army, the taxes, and was in charge of law and order. Henry VIII thought that this level of power was wrong so repealed the Sheriff’s powers and gave the military responsibility to the Lieutenancies. And in fact it wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that the military connection was removed.” I must in passing say at this point that both Michael and Bill very gracefully ignored my regular mispronunciation of ‘Lieutenant’ confusing this occasionally with the Americanism of ‘lootenant’ - although I think Michael’s dog who came to join us and sat close to me for a while was less forgiving, if his regularly raised eyebrows were any indication! As the Queen’s representative for Surrey there is a lot to get to grips with, and this was effectively emphasised by Michael as he picked up and leafed through a rather hefty handbook he had been issued when taking up the appointment. He smiled seeing my reaction. “As well as being formally responsible for upholding the dignity of the Crown in the county, when you break the job down into all of its different facets it then makes much more sense.” “If you looked at the Lord-Lieutenant’s diary you’d be amazed at the variety of things that we get involved

in,” Bill added. “It’s colossal, it really is, and a lot of it is recognising what’s going on all over the county. It touches every area, be that recognising volunteers and charitable activities, or education, media and business. They’re all represented, and most of it I feel is hidden under the surface. You’ll see the photo of the Lord-Lieutenant in his uniform looking magnificent presenting something, but that’s the tip of the iceberg. There’s so much also going on underneath it all.” I suggested we start with what’s involved in the royal visits and what benefits these bring for the local community. “So, for the royal visits we have to decide which of the many representations we get, whether it’s from a charity or a business or another organisation, will be submitted as a bid. These bids are for several royal households and we are planning many months ahead of course,” Michael explained. “Once a visit has been confirmed a lot of additional planning is involved. We meet up with representatives from the royal household, the police, and the venue and walk the course often refining the visit so that literally every minute is catered for. They of course also have security in mind. It’s a huge job just organising a visit. The number of people involved is incredible.” In response to my question as to the benefits that these visits generate Bill was quick to answer. “All visits generate so much goodwill. Everyone involved comes away feeling about six inches taller, they are walking on air. You cannot underrate the value that brings for that organisation, the hospital or whatever it might be.” Bill was looking visibly moved as he recounted a visit by the Queen to the new veterinary school at Surrey University. “It was remarkable.

There were people at every single window, and people were crammed down every corridor we went down. The noise of people cheering and shouting. The waving of Union Jacks. It was just like Wembley Stadium.” Both Michael and Bill were smiling broadly at the memory. When I asked Michael to give a brief description of the military uniform they both wear at the more formal events he explained about the difference from a serving general’s uniform, which in essence is in the crown motif and pips on their shoulder-boards as well as the fact that they carry a curved sword. But this triggered a good bit of laughter between the two Lieutenants when they recalled visits, especially to schools where pupils will often ask about their swords. “When asked why I’ve got a sword I’ve been known to jokingly reply: ‘It’s in case I’ve got a problem here at school!’ and in response to ‘How often do you clean it?’ my retort of ‘Well, it depends how often I have to use it!’ always gets a laugh!” said Michael laughing. “My ‘I can get four chickens on mine for the barbecue!’ always goes down well too,” added Bill. “On a serious note though,” said Michael. “Our visits to schools always generate a lot of interest and give them something

“The Queen’s Award for Enterprise is also very important,” Michael added. “We get to present awards to local businesses with 80 per cent of these being small and medium-sized companies. They get to use the Queen’s Award logo which really boosts their profile and helps their business, especially those exporting all around the world. It really is important to say ‘We’re a British company, and being British means quality’. I could give lots of examples, but we’ve presented twice to a company in Artington that exports cutting-edge MRI scanners, and then in Shackleford, which has to perhaps be the sleepiest village in the county (both laugh at his quip) to a hightech communications business operating out of Stovolds Barn.” “I chair the Advisory Committee on Justices of the Peace every three months and I’m full of admiration for what JPs do, especially when you see the cases that they have to deal with - and all unpaid? Did you know that?” I must confess that I didn’t. Both Michael and Bill spoke highly of the support that they get from the 40 or so Deputy Lieutenants and from Caroline Breckell, Deputy Clerk to the Lieutenancy who has been in post for over 25 years. I must say that overall my departing impression of the Lieutenancy was one of their commitment and service, not just to Her Majesty The Queen but equally to the communities of Surrey.

else to learn and discuss. We get many appreciative comments from the teaching staff.” And what of the other Lord-Lieutenancy roles? “Well, the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services is very important,” explained Bill. “We have the most fantastic groups of volunteers in Surrey that have been put forward for this. Nominations go through the Cabinet Office and the successful awards really do put a feather in their caps. A great example is Frensham Pond Sailability where volunteers educate and train disabled sailors. I think Surrey is very fortunate to have really good groups of volunteers in all sorts of areas spread right across the county.” December 2018

Smoked salmon tasting - our verdict! AT A recent editorial meeting, it was our Lauren who came up with the idea of tasting various smoked salmon in the December issue and give our verdict to readers. As you can imagine, we all warmly embraced the idea. I researched the contact details for all the major supermarkets in the VantagePoint area, and also contacted a couple of mail order specialists. The first person to get in touch was Lance Forman from H Forman & Sons in London, the world’s oldest producer of smoked salmon. He immediately offered to provide some of their salmon but insisted on bringing samples down himself so that he could talk to us about the evolving history of smoked salmon and offer tips on what to look for when doing a tasting like this, to which we readily agreed. H Forman & Sons was founded in London’s East End by Lance’s great-grandfather, Aaron ‘Harry’ Forman, in 1905 and is the last surviving smokehouse in London. A Russian émigré from Odessa, he saw potential in the curing of fresh salmon as a means of preserving the fish. The fish used originally originated from the Baltic but they soon started using Scottish salmon, which became very popular and Britain’s first home-grown gourmet food. The secret was the ‘London Cure’, which was and is a very simple recipe which preserves those wonderful flavours – the freshest salmon, a little salt, just the right amount of oak smoke. Nothing else. ‘London Cure Smoked Salmon’ is the only smoked salmon in the world with the highly prized protected name (PGI) status, and London’s first ever food or drink to achieve this coveted recognition. The popularity of smoked salmon and its introduction to supermarkets and a wider audience saw big changes in the industry. Salmon farms started, and bigger, more commercial

H Forman & Sons

smokehouses started up, mostly in Scotland to be nearer the source of the fish. The way the fish was preserved also became more commercial for a number of reasons - to reduce costs, increase margins, meet price points and generally keep the product affordable for most consumers. As you can imagine, this has an impact on the flavour. Three quarters of all smoked salmon in the UK now comes from Norway, and while it is 10-15% cheaper, it also takes much longer to arrive, compromising the freshness of the fish. The rest comes from Scotland, almost all of which is now farmed, as there are currently some curbs in place over the fishing of wild salmon, making it very much more rare and thus expensive. Do remember to check the packaging and note that ‘Scottish smoked salmon’ is not the same as ‘Smoked Scottish salmon’! When deciding what product to buy, the key ingredient to look out for is sugar. This is used for a number of reasons - to reduce the taste of additional salt sometimes used to prolong shelf life or to add weight to the fish by retaining more of the water in it to make it a cheaper product. It may also be used to counteract excessive smoking on fish that is perhaps not as fresh as it could be - the smoke helps disguise the flavour. Purists insist that quality smoked salmon should contain no sugar at all, unless it is Gravadlax which is not smoked and has a completely different curing process. The two main complaints about smoked salmon tend to be that it is too smoky and/or too slimey. Good quality salmon should be neither. See overleaf to see how the whole team got on with our tasting, which took place at the beginning of November...

London Cure Smoked Salmon (H Forman & Sons)

This really was excellent. Lovely light colour, very slightly smoked with a great, almost buttery salmon flavour, not overly salty. A lovely soft texture. We tried two versions, a ‘lean’ cut and a ‘fatty’ cut which come from different parts of the same salmon, both having their devotees. You can specify when ordering or the standard packs will have some of both. We also tried the Royal Fillet, which was exceptional.  £12.95 for 200g. www.formanandfield.co.uk

2

Bradam Orach Smoked Salmon (Loch Fyne)

This was not too smoked with a good texture. Very meaty and a good flavour, reasonably salty but not excessive. Light colour. Very enjoyable. Winner of the Fish & Seafood category of the Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards 2018.  £10.50 for 200g. www.lochfyne.com

3

Twice Smoked Scottish Lochmuir Smoked Salmon (M&S)

This was perhaps a little chewy but not too smoky, very lean, with a good salmon taste, smooth texture. Attractive colour. Very good.  £5 for 100g. www.marksandspencer.co.uk

5=

Sliced Smoked Salmon (Aldi)

This looked as if it had been previously frozen and it was a little mushy on the palate. Quite lean, lightly smoked, a little greasy perhaps but a good flavour. The fish is Norwegian.  £3.99 for 200g. www.aldi.co.uk

4

Finest Mild and Delicate Smoked Scottish Salmon (Tesco)

Quite gamey, good texture, quite lean and not over smoked. Pale colour. A bit oily and salty but very pleasant.  £4 for 100g. www.tesco.com

5=

Chestnut Smoked Scottish Salmon (Waitrose 1)

Quite a good texture and very lightly smoked. Not a great deal of flavour and certainly no chestnut. Very lean, pleasantly thin slices. Not bad at all.  £5.99 for 100g. www.waitrose.com

The others: Finest Strong and Robust Smoked Scottish Salmon (Tesco)  Very smoky flavour, quite chewy, salty and not comparable to their other salmon. Deluxe Scottish Smoked Salmon (Lidl)  Quite smoky, very chewy, not a good texture and not much flavour. Odd colour. Maple Cured Scottish Smoked Salmon glazed with Maple Syrup & Orange (Sainsburys)  The salmon flavour drowned out by an overly sweet glaze which was not great. Good texture though. Specially Selected Smoked Salmon (Aldi)  Did not taste very fresh, quite tough, very smoky, greasy and not a great aftertaste. December 2018

V. Leith Hill, Surrey - Hills, Mills and Gunpowder WEEKEND WALK

The perennially popular Ramblers Festival of Winter Walks is back, taking place this year from Friday 21st December to Sunday 6th January. Ramblers groups across the UK are offering a selection of free festive walks to give everyone the chance to enjoy the wonderful winter landscape in good company, and to make new friends at a time of year when many people can feel lonely or isolated. During the festival there are hundreds of walks planned across the country, so there is something for everyone, from short festive strolls to more strenuous walks: Visit www.ramblers.org.uk/winter for details of hundreds of free group walks taking place across the country. Our walk this month is taken with kind permission from the Ramblers. It is a circular route in the Surrey Hills AONB which passes sleepy Surrey mill hamlets and 'hammer' ponds and climbs to a 360-degree view from Leith Hill Tower. It follows wide, well maintained bridleways to Friday Street, then along narrower forest tracks. 1. With Holmbury St Mary bus stop (one stop after the Royal Oak) on your left, walk a short distance along the road then turn left into Pasture Wood Road. Walk past Bulmer Farm on your left and a minor turning on your right. As the road turns left take a right turn onto the Greensand Way. Follow the Greensand Way through Pasture Wood for approximately 20 mins until you reach High Ashes Farm. Go past the farm and turn right at the fingerpost and continue on the Greensand Way, but take the first left to cut a corner and rejoin the Greensand Way 5 mins later, where you turn left up the hill to a road. Cross the road, turn right and then turn left onto a footpath. Turn left again immediately, ignoring the wide main track. After approximately 2 mins turn right and after another 1 or 2 mins take the right fork, following a sign to the tower. After a further 2 mins fork left and continue on the upward path following more signs to the tower. The path joins a wide track which leads up to an open space and Leith Hill Tower (TQ139431). Leith Hill at 294 metres (965 ft) is the highest point on the Greensand Ridge, and is the second highest point in south-east England. Leith Hill Tower, an 18th century Gothic tower, stands on the summit with panoramic 23/10/2018 Print route - Ramblers views northwards to London and the English Channel Print route to the south. 2. From Leith Hill, with the tower on your left, walk Leith Hill, Surrey - Hills, Mills and Cake downhill on the Green Trail toGunpowder a crossroads where you turn left along the Greensand Way again. There 4 hours 10.5km / 6.5mi Moderate is developer: now Walk a pleasant descent through the woods Route Britain Route checker: approximately Steve Hull lasting 20 mins, passing a crossroads at Whiteberry Gate, past Warren Farm to the track junction.

3. For an optional 15 min detour to the source of the Tillingbourne and Brookwick Copse, turn right towards Tilling Springs (signposted), and then left at a finger post, passing across the bridge over the Tillingbourne and uphill to a staggered gate. Turn left downhill just before the gate and follow the poorly defined track passing through holly and bracken of Brookwick Copse which eventually becomes marshland. Use the boardwalk provided then follow the path uphill again to rejoin the Greensand Way at Pond Cottage. There are some fairly steep ascents and descents in this short detour and it can be muddy in places. The Evelyn family of Wotton dominated Surrey's milling industry from the sixteenth century. Over 400 years ago, George Evelyn learned the secret formula of producing cheap saltpetre during his military service on the Continent. The Evelyns were rewarded by Queen Elizabeth I when she granted them the monopoly for the manufacture of gunpowder. George wasted little time, and soon a number of large gunpowder mills, but also iron and paper works, sprang up along the banks of the river Tillingbourne. Many 'hammer ponds' – artificial basins – were gouged along its course to power the waterwheels. Against great opposition, Brookwick Copse was taken from the common land and enclosed by George Evelyn to power his mill at Abinger Hammer. 4. If you’re not taking the detour, continue along the Greensand Way past Pond Cottage down to a road and riding stables at Broadmoor. Turn left up the road to Broadmoor and turn right on the path next to the Parish Council noticeboard. Bear right at the first fork and left at a second fork and press on uphill to a T-junction. Turn left and across two small roads and past the sign for the Wotton Estate. Continue through the woods past Severalls Copse (National Trust) down to the road, turning left to the mill pond at Friday Street. Circle the pond round to the left and up to the Stephen Langton pub in Friday Street. Friday Street features a huge man-made pond, a hammer pond used to power a large waterwheel. Its pub is named after the thirteenth century Archbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langton, a member of the

baron's council which forced King John to sign the Magna Carta in 1215 at Runnymede. It is claimed Langton was born in Friday Street. 5. Carry on with the pub on your left up the lane and take the first right (unmarked footpath) at the gate into the woods of Abinger Common. Push through any overgrowth and climb the short steep woodland track which soon levels out. Continue (westerly), ignoring another path leading backwards, to reach a fork where you turn left (ignoring a small path to your right) to reach a five-way junction. Take the second right down through the woods, crossing another path (ignore the downhill path going slightly right here). Continue for another 5 mins ignoring small paths to right and left until you emerge on the road. Abinger Common bus stop is to your right (buses to Guildford and Dorking). To your left is a small green with a well, built by William John Evelyn (1893), and Goddards house, designed and built by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1898. 6. To continue back to Holmbury St Mary, cross the green and follow a well defined footpath through Pasture Wood, which starts nearly opposite the red phone box. Pasture Wood is one result of the drive to reforest the Surrey Hills started by the diarist John Evelyn in reparation for the damage done to the local environment by his ancestors. Ignore all turnings left and right and stay on the

main track, which undulates through the woods. Pass a plantation of large conifers on the right and stay on the main track until it narrows and starts to descend. Here bear left to leave the main track and head steeply downhill on a narrow forest path to a kissing gate (about 15 mins). Continue straight ahead across the path junction turning left on the main road to reach Holmbury St Mary and the Royal Oak pub. Continue along the maIn road to reach the starting point at the next bus stop. Please note that one walker had problems with locked gates on MOD land on last month's walk Aldershot and the Basingstoke Canal. It may be therefore be worth checking with the MOD beforehand.

PROFILE

Probus Club of Leatherhead

this December, the Club is proud to announce that our principal guest and speaker will be Sir Richard Stilgoe OBE DL, the well-known songwriter, lyricist and musician, best known for his humorous songs and frequent television appearances and for contributing to a number of Lloyd Webber musicals; a few spaces are still available. Next year, the summer event will feature a return of harpist Margaret Watson, and at Christmas, Ian Gallagher will sing to them. He does a quite brilliant impersonation of Frank Sinatra and appears in Europe, USA and also on the Cunard cruise ships, plus many venues around the country. He has even been invited to sing at Buckingham Palace for the Royals. In addition, in April the speaker will be Inspector Ken Wharfe who, for 11 years, was the chosen New Scotland Yard senior detective responsible for safeguarding Princess Diana and the two young Princes, William and Harry. Ironically, she stood him down just a few weeks before her tragic death in Paris. Lady guests will be particularly welcome at this event.

LEATHERHEAD PROBUS is one of the oldest Probus clubs in Britain which meets at Tyrrells Wood Golf Club on the first Tuesday of the month. They exist for men who are retired or semi-retired to meet with their peers in a friendly and relaxed setting over lunch and to have their brains exercised by listening to their speakers on a wide range of subjects which this year have included Brooklands, Local Challenges, British Airborne Operations on D-Day and indeed Brexit, although the club has no political or religious affiliations. The club also held the third in its series of Celebrity Sporting Lunches at which stars of cricket, rugby and golf have entertained our members and many guests. These together have raised approaching £10,000 for the Lord’s Taverners charity for disadvantaged children. Although the Club is for men, wives, partners, girlfriends or just female friends are not forgotten. Every year, they have at least two buffet lunches designed to cater for our lady guests. Last year, they had Chris Tarrant as speaker at their Christmas Lunch and this summer, the talk featured Gems and Gemmology. For their Christmas Lunch

Dorking & Leatherhead

Other speakers scheduled for the coming year include the Chief Executive of MVDC, Karen Brimacombe, their MP, Sir Paul Beresford, and the third in our series of non-partisan and informative talks on Brexit by Simon Usherwood of Surrey University. The club also holds informal lunch meetings half way through the month when a number of members gather at a local pub or restaurant. Most members bring along lady guests (although this is not compulsory). Visits to Leatherhead Theatre with a pre-show dinner are also organised. If you are a gentleman who might be interested in joining us, then please come along to one of the club meetings.
