• THE EDITOR'S NOTE Since we started publishing local community magazines, we have always been pleased to support the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), given the good work it does and the fact that their main garden is local to us in Wisley. My links to the RHS started many years ago. As a book buyer for a local company called Colour Library Books (older readers may remember them!), I used to buy lots of RHS-branded books from Dorling Kindersley (DK), the main publisher of gardening books in association with the RHS. When I subsequently was asked to join Dorling Kinderley as business development manager, I found it quite easy to sell thousands of copies of RHS books, such was the quality of the products developed by the two companies. I still remember my best deal, which was a single order for 50,000 copies of the RHS A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants, a book that cost DK over £4 million to produce, then an unheard of sum for an illustrated book. As publisher of VantagePoint, I have been very lucky and grateful to be invited to attend Chelsea Flower Show, which is always a great highlight. It will be even more so for me this year, as one of our very longstanding advertisers will be designing a show garden for another longstanding advertiser. David Neale from NealeRichards is designing a garden for Silent Pool, our local gin distillers, which promises to be a fabulous collaboration. Please read Beth Otway’s column all about it in this month’s issue and keep your eyes peeled when Chelsea opens on the 21st May.

motorhome heaven With sales increasing, Stefan Reynolds borrows a motorhome for a weekend to check it out MEET ‘HENRY’. He is an Autotrail Imala 715 2-4 berth motorhome which I borrowed for a long weekend just before Easter, when I headed up to the Cotswolds for a couple of nights to check out the popularity of these moveable homes.

California campervan with no bathroom is more than £43,000. There is a good secondhand market and while these vehicles do retain their values, you can get older models for slightly more sensible money.

I have always had an affinity for campervans, as they used to be called. My second vehicle at the age of 19 was a Toyota HiAce. It was pretty slow, guzzled petrol but slept four people, had a cooker, sink, fridge and was an ideal vehicle for holidays, weekends and house parties, where my friends and I could just sleep off our beers and then drive home in the morning.

There is another way to enjoy the motorhome experience and that is to hire one for a long weekend or more. The locally based Motorhome Heaven was set up by Maureen and Allen Ruddock to fill a gap in the market, and they now offer three different models – Henry, Emilie and Bella. Each one is differently configured to suit a family of up to six or just a couple.

Motorhomes have moved on from campers and can now come with every conceivable ‘luxury’. Henry comes with a proper bathroom, a fixed double bed (no ladders involved!), a 4-ring hob with oven and separate grill, microwave, and a television/ DVD player, making it very much your home-from-home. They are also getting more and more popular. Sales of motorhomes rose by 14% in 2017, with more than 13,000 vehicles registered. Commenting on the figures, John Lally from the UK trade body for the motorhome industry said: “Holiday behaviour is changing; ‘staycationing’ is retaining even increasing - its appeal. We are going on more frequent, shorter holidays. Motorhomes are perfect for this”. It is not hard to see the appeal. Some good family friends, Jan and Rob, have had a motorhome for a few years following retirement and think nothing of spending a couple of months in France every summer in theirs, while another friend simply jumps into his with the dog for impromptu weekends in different parts of the UK. Of course, motorhomes and campers do not come cheap. Henry comes in at just over £50,000 and even a new VW

I picked up Henry on a Thursday afternoon and was shown round by Allen. It is a big vehicle at about 7 metres in length and 2 metres wide but this allows for a very comfortable interior with space for a couple and a couple of small children. The cooker, heater and hot water work on both electric and LPG gas while the solar powered leisure battery will keep the fridge and other electrical appliances working for a couple of days if you are without an electrical hookup. The water tank contains 135 litres for the sink and bathroom, which has a proper shower, sink and toilet. In addition to the fitted ‘French’ bed, there is a double bed over the cab, a couple of fixed seats and front seats which swivel to allow for five people to eat around the (moveable and extendable) table. HOW WILL INVISALIGN GO STRAIGHTEN MY TEETH? Invisalign will create a unique, digital treatment plan that maps out the exact movements of your teeth – so you can see the end result before you have even begun! Your Invisalign clear aligners are then designed to apply the right amount of force to the right place at the right time, moving your teeth into their new position little-by-little. WILL ANYONE BE ABLE TO TELL I’M WEARING BRACES? Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, so you can undergo the whole treatment with little worry that people will even notice you are wearing them! HOW MANY HOURS PER DAY SHOULD I WEAR MY ALIGNERS? In order to achieve the best results, we recommend you wear your Invisalign GO clear aligners 20-22 hours a day - only removing them to eat, drink and clean your teeth. HOW OFTEN TO I CHANGE MY ALIGNERS? AND, HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO COME IN TO THE PRACTICE? You will change your aligners yourself at home weekly - at each appointment we will usually send you away with 4-6 weeks’ worth of aligners to keep you going until your next visit to us here at Astek Dental Centre. HOW DO I GET STARTED WITH INVISALIGN TREATMENT? Give us a call or email to book your FREE consultation and see if Invisalign is for you! Call 01372 377678 now!

MOTORHOME HEAVEN storage with many overhead cupboards and a good-sized wardrobe for clothing. A neat touch is the television/DVD player, which swings down from the middle of the cab when needed but takes no space when not used. I was pleased by how easy it was to drive. You need to get used to the size and the overhang at the back but the 130bhp 2.3 litre diesel engine offers plenty of torque to keep up with the traffic and cruise comfortably on the motorway at 70mph. The steering is light and easy. Because there is no rear window, the ‘rear view mirror’ is actually a camera which is useful for reversing but not for driving, so you need to make good use of the side mirrors. My destination was the fabulous Cotswolds, and a tree-lined Caravan and Motorhome Club site just outside Moreton-inMarsh. The cost for a pitch and full use of the facilities is just £7.40 per person per night, £7.70 for the pitch per night and a £12 per night surcharge as a non-member. The facilities were good and included excellent showers, toilet block, play area for children, field for dogs, washing up stations and a small shop. You also get electricity hook-up for the van as well as areas for getting fresh water and disposing of your waste water and the toilet cartridge. Despite being the weekend before Easter, the site was almost full, with an even mix of motorhomes and caravans. The age range was mainly retired people but there were a

An early evening dog walk showed most people happily ensconced in their van, preparing food and watching Eggheads, before closing their black-out blinds, pouring a glass of wine and enjoying their evening. Just like being at home. And that I think is the point and the great attraction. A home on wheels, wherever you want to go. Borrow one for a long

Behind the scenes at the

The Surrey County Show Phil Kemp meets the show organisers to find out what makes this agricultural event so popular ON THE 28th May, Guildford’s Stoke Park hosts the country’s biggest one-day agricultural show welcoming visitors from far and wide – visitors who not only want to enjoy the excitement of watching competitive events and live entertainment, but to also have the chance of getting up close to farm animals and take part in hands-on activities. The show has been run by a dedicated team of enthusiastic volunteers from the Surrey farming community for over 60 years with the aim of bringing the countryside and rural life into the heart of Guildford. I was invited by the Surrey County Agricultural Society to meet with their chairman Angus Stovold and chief executive Tracey Longhurst, who are both at the heart of the organisation making this annual event the great success that it is.

spring, and one in the autumn. We also have farming competitions throughout the year.” Held every year on the spring bank holiday in Stoke Park, a 66-acre site that provides not only ample space to stage an event of this size but also given its proximity to Guildford town centre and a station a few minutes’ walk away, it is an unbeatable location to help the society literally bring farming into the urban community. Or as Angus proudly puts it: “It’s a case of 'the country goes to town’!”

The estate office of Angus’ farm provided a perfect setting for my glimpse into what happens behind the scenes, with bookshelves laden with the history of the society’s many events, and black and white photos adorning the walls. “The society’s first show was held at Eashing Farm, Godalming in 1954. Formed by the amalgamation of the Surrey Agricultural Association and the Redhill Agricultural Society, both founded in the 19th century, the thriving society we have today aims to promote agriculture through education and competition,” explained Angus. “And we achieve that through two agricultural shows. Have you got a special event coming up? ‘Farm Buildings’ development prize in 1993. Such is the quality of the workmanship of the main barn, many visitors to Gildings Barn reasonably presume it to be centuries old. The most recently built structure, the Granary, stands at the rear of the main barn. The beauty of the main barn quickly captured the hearts of many local people, and from its completion in 1993 it has been in high demand for weddings and other events.

Gildings Barns in Newdigate is a beautiful events venue located at Gildings Farm, originally part of the Cudworth Manor Estate. Gildings Farm was sold in 1957 to the late Peter Hall and was subsequently farmed as part of Green Lane Farm, just half a mile away. Peter built the main barn using traditional carpentry techniques and materials. The timber was salvaged from nearby Holmwood Common after the storms of 1987 and 1990 and in recognition of the quality of workmanship Peter was awarded the prestigious

Nowadays Gildings Barns is owned by Penny Graepel, Peter’s daughter, and her husband, Richard. Penny spent her childhood riding ponies in the woods at Gildings, and nowadays still rides horses. Richard is a passionate farmer, and lambs have recently been born at the farm. Tracey is also from the farming community and specialises in rare breeds, working what she cheerfully describes as “a large smallholding or a small farm, depending upon your viewpoint!”. As the society’s chief executive, she manages the team of volunteers and is keen to engage not just with the farming community but also with the public generally. “Volunteering, for example as stewards helping to run the show on the day, provides a great opportunity to gain experience from dealing with show visitors,” said Tracey. “This year we are opening up stewarding and volunteering to the broader public. We’ll provide training and support and they’ll really enjoy the day too. Anyone that wants to get involved can contact us on our website.” The show this year boasts an exciting display of different activities and entertainment in two arenas and three show rings. Across the showground too are avenues of marquees and demonstration areas with all manner of things to see and do.

We tweak the programme every year, with the intention of making the show different and bringing a different character to what’s happening

“We tweak the programme every year, with the intention of making the show different and bringing a different character to what’s happening.” said Tracey. “We’ve got some exciting surprises this year. The Guildford Fringe Theatre are taking over the bandstand area and are going to be putting on a full day of entertainment with music and theatre. Much of it will be a surprise on the day, and there’s a good chance that members of the public all across the showground may have unexpected encounters. I can’t wait to see what happens!”

Looking through the show’s programme I could see that at the heart of the full day’s events not surprisingly were all things rural and agricultural. Cattle, sheep, pig, goat, donkey and horse competitions. Beekeepers, a milking parlour, coppicing, falconry, duck and ferret racing, showjumping and dog agility. And of course all manner of rural crafts, food tents and exhibitors of every description. But the Agricultural Society doesn’t stop there. “We also aim to mix interesting and educational elements with those that are pure entertainment,” Tracey enthused. “This year we’ve got the Bolddog Lings motorbike stunt team to provide the kids with what we call the ‘whizz bang’ element that they so love. We’ve also got a heavy horse village. The heavy horses will be taking part in the grand finale to mark the centenary of World War One. And throughout the day the kids will have an opportunity to get involved with them which will make the finale very special.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE SURREY COUNTY SHOW

“We’ve also got a First World War re-enactment team encamped in the middle of the showground all day. Children can sign up for the King’s Shilling, learn how to march, try out gas masks that were used in the trenches – and of course their parents can take part too!” From my previous visits to the County Show I’ve tended to dwell, perhaps a little too long, in the food and drink sections. And by the sounds of it I might be spending even more time there this year. “Of course, what is really big at the show are the superb food and drink stalls. It is understandably a very popular tent,” added Angus, perhaps showing off his mindreading skills to boot. “We have Brian Turner the celebrity chef coming along to do some demonstration slots in the food theatre. He will also be going walkabout to meet people, members of the public. This year we’ve taken the food theatre out of the food hall – which means that there are going to be even more food stalls.” I had also noted that there are going to be Silent Pool Gin tastings and an Albury Vineyard presentation on English sparkling wine in the food theatre, but I thought it best not to dwell any longer in case my hosts started to get the wrong opinion of me.

with a leaderboard throughout the day. And I’m sure the whole family, rather than just the kids, can take part.” Angus immediately piped up: “I want a go!” To which the retort back from Tracey resulted in a laughing fit between them both. But of course it would be wrong to ignore the main reason for the show being staged every year. It is to enable the visitors, who are mostly from urban backgrounds, to have the chance to understand what farming contributes to our everyday lives, and also to see first-hand what agriculture is all about. “We are providing a real showcase to show where our food comes from, with the farmers telling the story,” concluded Tracey. “Providing a milking parlour so kids can see where the milk comes from. Having Merrist Wood smallholders run the petting farms where they will be able to see chicks hatching on the day and get to be hands-on with pygmy goats and sheep - and a host of other things. It really does bring it all to life.”

“What really excited me is when a teacher from one of the local schools contacted me,” said Tracey. “Elisabeth Gill and a friend of hers are going to be rowing across the Atlantic in December to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund, and Eikon - a Surrey charity that provides counselling for schoolchildren. They will be at the show with their boat, the Atlantic Albatross.”

Phil Kemp is a Godalming-based writer and photographer. www.weyriver.co.uk.

“Ah, and another surprise is the fact we’ve got the Surrey Storms netball team running a celebrity shoot-out,” added Tracey. “It involves a trampoline which the kids will love, and there will be competitions for them to take part in, and

I FIRST interviewed Surrey-based Garden Designer David Neale, of NealeRichards Garden Design, for the November 2015 edition of VantagePoint Magazine. During this interview, David Neale spoke about his hopes for the future and his ambition to design and build a garden for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. I caught up with David earlier this year, when I was thrilled to discover that David’s dreams have come true. As you’re reading this article, David is now at Chelsea, building the Silent Pool Gin Garden, which David designed for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018! David particularly wanted to work with Silent Pool Distillers. He lives in a nearby Surrey village, and had noticed many parallels between Silent Pool’s ethos and the motivation behind NealeRichards Garden Design – they both use high quality products, pay great attention to detail, and are very customer-focused. Both companies really care about their work, taking pride in the quality of their finished products. Realising that we all need a place to relax and unwind from the stresses of our daily lives, David designed The Silent Pool Gin Garden as an urban retreat for a professional couple, living in the city. It’s a space to recharge and enjoy a drink together, filled with water and beautiful plants, set under the canopy of native, multi-stemmed trees, built with quality, UK sourced, sustainable materials. David has taken inspiration both from Silent Pool’s gin making processes, and the company’s alluring location in his design. The Silent Pool Gin Garden features a raised pool that ebbs and flows into a reflective pool below. This is reminiscent

16 VANTAGEPOINT

of the pools at the company’s base within the Surrey Hills. Silent Pool use their water in the distillation process, and they use copper gin distillation helmets and oak timber too, so David will also be using these materials in the garden. The boardwalks in the Silent Pool Gin Garden were inspired by the boardwalks at Thursley National Nature Reserve, an area that’s close to David’s heart, as he used to live nearby. David sourced the sustainable English oak for the Silent Pool Gin Garden from Norbury Park, which is part of the Surrey Wildlife Trust. The design of Silent Pool’s bottle, with its elegant floral pattern, denoting the 24 botanicals that go into the making of their gin has also influenced the garden’s design. You’ll be able to see some of the gin’s ingredients, including chamomile and angelica growing in the garden. Orris root, or iris root is another ingredient, hence Iris fulva will feature in the planting. Iris fulva produces intensely coppery coloured flowers, which also references the copper used in the distilling process used to make Silent Pool gin. I am so happy that David Neale has realised his Chelsea ambition, I cannot wait to see his garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show! LEST WE FORGET In the first of two articles to commemorate 100 years since its end, Andy Thompson reflects on WWI. WHEN THE guns of WWI finally fell silent at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 Britain began to count the cost. Of the 6 million men who had been mobilised during the conflict, over 1 million lay dead on the battlefields of the world or in the oceans fought over by the navy and merchant seamen with the vast majority lying in shallow graves on the Western Front – a 100-mile strip of land winding through Belgium and Northern France. In 1915 the British army had taken the decision that no man would be returned home but would be buried near to where they fell. In 1917 the Imperial War Graves Commission (IWGC) was formed and tasked with giving those who had made the supreme sacrifice for their country a permanent resting place. Belgium and France gave land to the British people ‘in perpetuity’ and during the 1920s, the 500,000 who could be found and identified were buried beneath a Portland headstone. The bodies that could be identified have a headstone with their name, rank and regiment, those bodies that could not be identified became ‘A Soldier of the Great War. Known unto God’ and their

names were recorded on one of 28 memorials created to list the names of those ‘denied a burial given to their comrades in death’. Whilst many family members made the personal pilgrimage to visit their loved ones before and after WWII it was the onset of fast channel crossings, the euro and the internet that generated a huge upsurge in visits to the hundreds of cemeteries in Flanders. The 100th anniversary commemorations organised between 2014-18 have seen unprecedented visitors from around the Commonwealth travelling to the battlefields, many remembering family members who died but many wanting to understand more of what happened in the mud, chaos and terror that was trench warfare.

Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, by Thursley-born Sir Edwin Lutyens, commemorates more than 72,000 men of British and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20th March 1918 and have no known grave, the majority of whom died during the Somme offensive of 1916.

Whilst the cemeteries dotted along the Western Front (the smallest 12, the largest 12,000) all tell a story, the centrepiece of pilgrimage for the British army was always going to be the Menin Gate. Most British soldiers marched out of the Belgian city of Ypres through the gate and hundreds of thousands did not return. The glutinous mud of the Ypres Salient had sucked thousands of men to their death where they remain to this day. To remember them it was agreed that memorials would be constructed with panels containing the list of names of the ‘Missing of the Salient’. Almost 60,000 names are carved on the 60 panels on the gate, confirming the sheer scale of the loss from around the Empire. When the army finalised its list of those missing in the Ypres area in 1924 a further 47,000 names had to be added to two other memorials at Tyne Cot Cemetery and Ploegsteert. The Menin Gate was unveiled on 24th July 1927 and buglers played the Last Post in ‘Memory of the Missing’. The city of Ypres decided to play the Last Post every day to remind the youth of Belgian the debt they owed the British army and on Wednesday 4th April this year, the buglers played the Last Post for the 30,000th time. Whilst the Menin Gate became the main place of pilgrimage, each nation of the Commonwealth honours its dead where they fell. The Australians gather on 25th April at Villers-Bretonneux and at Gallipoli, the Canadians at Vimy Ridge on 9th April, the New Zealanders commemorate ANZAC Day on 25th April and the South Africans remember their sacrifice at Delville Wood on 1st July. The Great War changed the world. H G Wells predicted, in 1914, that it would be ‘The war May 2018

that will end war’ and the numbers reflected the colossal destruction of warfare on an industrial scale. The estimated casualty figure for all the 89 combatant nations was 41 million with 18 million being killed, millions more died in the Spanish Flu pandemic that swept the world between 1918-20. Surrey suffered thousands of casualties with almost every community losing men, and in some cases, women. Some of the most powerful stories of the those killed were Surrey men. Dorking lad, Valentine Joe Strudwick (killed in January 1916) was only 15 when he was killed by a German sniper and is believed to be one of the youngest English casualties. Henry Webber, a Horley man, was killed during the Battle of the Somme and at the age of 67 is believed to be the oldest casualty of all those killed during the war. Harry Farr (pictured left) was sent back to the front line the autumn of 1916 when he was very obviously suffering from shell shock. When he refused to march to the front line, he was shot by firing squad for cowardice. It was Harry Farr’s Farnham family who led the campaign to have those executed for desertion or cowardice pardoned and of the 346 shot at dawn, 306 were pardoned in 2006. Fabulous British Asparagus • FOOD & DRINK

Morrocan Crusted Salmon Rib Eye Steak with British and Asparagus Salad Asparagus and Teriyaki

Ingredients:

For the salmon: 1 tsp crushed cumin seeds, 1 tsp crushed coriander seeds, 1 tsp sesame seeds, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1 tsp allspice, 1 tsp soft light muscovado sugar, small bunch parsley roughly chopped salt and cracked black pepper, 4 pieces of salmon fillet, scales removed, 4 tbsp olive oil. For the salad: 2 bundles of asparagus trimmed, 1 preserved lemon, seeds and flesh removed, 1 shallot thinly sliced, 1 red chilli, deseeded and sliced, 2 plum tomatoes cut into chunks, 2 handfuls rocket washed, 4 tbsp Greek yogurt extra virgin olive oil for drizzling. Serves 4.

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 180°c, gas mark 6 2. In a bowl, mix the cumin, coriander, sesame seeds, paprika, allspice, sugar and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Sprinkle the mixture all over the flesh side of the salmon and drizzle over the olive oil. 4. Bring a medium-sized pan of salted water to the boil. Place in the asparagus and cook for 2 minutes. Drain then cool and set aside. 5. In a hot non-stick frying pan seal the salmon skin side down first, then place in the oven for 6-8 minutes. 6. While you are waiting for the salmon to cook, chop the lemon skin and place in a medium-sized bowl. Then add the asparagus, shallots, chilli, tomatoes, rocket and a splash of extra virgin olive oil, season and mix. 7. When the salmon is cooked, divide between 4 warm plates, top with the salad. Finish with a spoonful of yogurt, cracked pepper and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

Ingredients:

For the Teriyaki sauce: 75ml soy sauce, 75ml mirin, Japanese sweet rice wine, 75ml sake, 1 tbsp sugar. For the rest: 2 x 150g rib eye steaks, 1 tbsp vegetable oil plus a dash more for cooking the British asparagus, sea salt and black pepper, 1 packet of British asparagus, trimmed of woody ends, a pinch of cayenne pepper, and white and black sesame seeds to serve. Serves 4.

Method:

1. To make the Teriyaki sauce, combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Stir the mixture well. Put it on medium heat and bring to a boil. Turn the heat down to low and simmer for a couple of minutes. Stop the heat and cool the mixture. It’s now ready to use but if you have any left you can store the sauce in a clean bottle in the fridge. 2. Heat a griddle pan until really hot and almost smoking. Rub the steaks with the oil, salt and pepper. Griddle the steaks for 2 minutes on each side so that they’re medium rare. Leave to rest. 3. While the beef is resting rub the British asparagus with a little oil then lay on the griddle and grill for 2-3 minutes, turning every now and then until they start to soften but still have bite and have little chars on them. 4. Split the asparagus between two plates. Carve the steaks into 1cm strips and lay on top of the asparagus pouring over the meat juices left from resting. Cover each steak with a few tablespoons of Teriyaki sauce and sprinkle with the cayenne and sesame seeds.

Farnham Lines and Trails This walk explores some hidden and unusual aspects of Farnham’s history and celebrates the launch of the town’s second free walking festival which runs from May 20th-June 3rd. Farnham has an interesting part in ensuring walkers’ rights of way, played a key part in the 1940 invasion defence preparations and is at the start of a national trail. Those connections and other interesting facts will be explored during the course of this short introductory walk. Visit www.vantagepointmag.co.uk/walks for the walk map. More information about the festival can be found at www.farnham.gov.uk/walkingfestival and bookings for each walk can be placed online.

• THE WALK 1. Start at the Shepherd & Flock public house which is located within the roundabout bearing the same name at the end of the A31 Farnham bypass. Limited parking is available in the road here or, if you’re using the pub, in its car park. Walk in front of the pub towards the houses and turn left down an unmade lane through this strange “island village” isolated from the rest of Farnham by the incessant traffic. Continue along the lane through an interesting mix of quirky building styles until you are in the shadow of the bridge carrying the main A31 road over the lane. To your left is an Edwardian lodge building and this was the scene of a confrontation on the 17th January 1897 when Sir William Rose of Moor Park House (see later) attempted to close off the lane to public access. The lane leads ultimately to Waverley Abbey, a popular spot for Sunday strollers, then and now. This action led to an event which has gone down in the annals of town history as is well recorded in W Ewbank Smith’s ‘Victorian Farnham’: “Farnham’s miniature battle was fought out in the cold January weather. Sir William’s men duly closed and chained the gates early on Sunday morning and a crowd of some four or five hundred townsmen, and a sprinkling of women, gathered outside. The snow lay on the ground; this came in useful as ammunition for those who were not armed with sticks, crowbars, sledgehammers and other assorted ironmongery. Herbert Frost and his rural colleague, John Stedman, (council surveyors) were cheered as they forced the chains with crowbars. The defenders, consisting of a handful of lodgekeepers and other servants, though reinforced by the six exCity policemen, were clearly no match for the superior strength of the attackers, who by sheer weight of numbers breached the gates and won for the town a victory that has never since been challenged.” 2. Continue along the lane under the road bridge and, further on, below the railway. 50m after the railway bridge look to your left where you will see partly hidden among the vegetation on the bank a rock-lined cleft. Once an ornamental waterfall in the grounds of Rock House on the bluff above, its origin is the outfall from a watermill that predated the house itself. Further along the lane take the right turn between fences towards High Mill. This is another of the town’s ancient mills and this

22 VANTAGEPOINT

one, whilst now purely a residence, is believed to still contain a full set of milling machinery. Walk across the forecourt of the mill and exit through a set of gates into a track between meadows. Continue down the track to cross the river Wey via a footbridge beside a ford. 3. Walk along the path ahead into the edge of woodland where you will soon see a path to your left signed ‘North Downs Way’. Take the North Downs Way, a national trail leading from Farnham to Dover, through young woodland to emerge onto a narrow road and turn left. Walk, with care, along the road turning first left to re-cross the river by a small bridge. Continue ahead, noting the large antitank cylinder obstacle in the left verge, to crossroads at the foot of a steeply rising sunken lane. 4. Turn right here, leaving the North Downs Way, joining the Greensand Way through the large gates to Moor Park House. Walk along the drive between more concrete anti-tank cylinders to reach the main entrance to the large house. Now split into luxury apartments with grounds sweeping down to the river, this was formerly a country house owned by Sir William Rose of the right-of-way dispute above. Built in 1630, earlier occupants included Sir William Temple who employed one Jonathan Swift as his secretary. Swift wrote A Tale of a Tub and The Battle of the Books while living here though many will know him better through Gulliver’s Travels. Later the house became a Christian Adult Education centre. 5. Continue walking along the lane ahead which gradually narrows to become a path between the foot of the slope and the fenced fields on the right. After about a third of a mile you will find a pillbox adjacent to the right hand fence. This is part of the GHQ defence line erected rapidly (over approximately six months) in 1940 when the threat of German invasion was at its height during World War Two. The line runs through Farnham from Ewshot to Waverley and then continues through Elstead and Godalming. This pillbox was designed for a maximum garrison of nine men with five light machine guns and two rifles. It is positioned to provide covering fire to a larger anti-tank gun emplacement further along the path. 6. A little further along the path, where the ground

rises, you will find the anti-tank emplacement designed to house a 2pdr gun, complete with its carriage, firing out through the large embrasure with a good view and field of fire across the river meadows below. Return to the path and continue along the terrace above swampy ground to the right and among mature trees. This area is a nature reserve and shortly you will come to a stream issuing from a gated cave mouth. This natural sandstone cave is known as Mother Ludlam’s Cave and is surrounded by numerous legends. They largely centre round a supposed onetime occupant, Mother Ludlam who was reputed to be the white witch of Waverley. The story goes that she often loaned out utensils to local people but was displeased when a large cauldron, now in Frensham church, was late in being returned. The cave originally extended around 200 feet in length and the brothers of Waverley Abbey dedicated the fresh water spring within to St Mary. Now it is home to Natterer’s, Daubenton’s, Long-eared and Greater Horseshoe bats. 7. From here retrace your steps back to the gates of Moor Park House (it is possible to continue on to Waverley Abbey but this involves crossing the busy Farnham to Godalming road). 8. At the crossroads, cross straight ahead into the made up lane. In the field to your left is another pillbox. Further down the lane, where it comes closest to the river, you will find a number of 'dragon’s teeth', small concrete cones from the defence line designed to prevent tanks from fording the river at this point. Continuing along the road you will come across another anti-tank gun emplacement on the right. After the war this was converted to a garage or shed. Just beyond are the buildings of Moor Park Farm. Just visible at the end of the track to the right is a very large block of former hop kilns now converted to luxury homes. May 2018

Continue on the lane alongside the fence passing another anti-tank concrete cylinder in the field on the left. 9. Continue on along the lane past the entrance to High Mill and beneath the railway and road bridges to return to your starting point at the Shepherd & Flock pub. This walk introduces a number of the themes that will feature in this year’s Walking Festival, sponsored by Breaking Free. They hope to welcome you on some of those walks to explore Farnham and its surroundings further.

THIS LITTLE society is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2018 and they have much to be proud of, says Diane Cooper.

From tentative beginnings at their inaugural meeting in Denbies, they have developed into a robust, well-managed, volunteer-led group that gets involved in many local initiatives and is now wellrecognised in Surrey’s conservation sector. They are often seen at local events, country fairs and interestgroup talks – in fact they attract most of their members when they’re out and about being involved with the community living in and around the Surrey Hills.

They have an ever-growing membership and crucially, manage to retain them as members year on year. Once involved with the Surrey Hills, it’s hard to leave! They’re always looking for new volunteer members but are fortunate to have a strong, dedicated management and trustee core team who always go above and beyond to support the society. So what are they all about? Surrey is very fortunate to have a nationally-designated protection known as the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) that’s been in existence for 60 years this year (both anniversaries coincide). Much preparation has been done to mark these anniversaries, including the creation of a Heritage Lottery Funded book produced by the society, looking at whether and how well the AONB designation has worked to preserve the environment. Happily the conclusion is that it has generally worked well and that, in many places, there has been little change to the smaller rural villages and countryside within it.

• Visit some of the most interesting properties that have stood the test of time that may not be generally open to the public • Learn about the fascinating characters who built and lived in them (like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle of Sherlock Holmes fame in Hindhead and Ralph Vaughn Williams, the composer, who lived in Leith Hill Place) • Assist local conservation groups with projects, such as bidding for Heritage Lottery funds to work on specific projects • Guided walks in the countryside, hills and rural villages, often learning about how these areas are managed for conservation • Help out with countryside volunteer tasks with other like-minded groups Some events are free and any income from others that they run is ploughed back to use in supporting causes they decide are relevant to their aims. They are also able to bid for funds to the Surrey Hills Trust Fund. They’ve a few celebrations lined up this year, such as a special celebration event at Speaker’s House in Westminster in early May, as well as a couple of ‘thank you’ events during the summer for members. They also support the North Downs Way National Trail partners who are celebrating 40 years of the trail, and are running a series of walks along the trail to celebrate jointly. They’re really looking forward to the next decade and whatever direction that takes the Society. Their members are a supportive lot and the events are often over-subscribed, so they need to be growing to keep pace and attract new volunteers who have an interest in conservation of this special landscape. Could that be you? Diane Cooper is Chair of the Marketing & Communications Committee, Surrey Hills Society FIND OUT MORE
