Evergreen Roots Go Deep and Strong
In 1999, only months apart, the Numake family on Tanna and the Malas family on Efate, had a similar vision of how to showcase Vanuatu as a magical and happy place in the South Pacific. Being the only thriving locallyowned companies, it seemed natural for the founders to work together. It is just recently that I found that their stories are much deeper and more intricate than a common business vision.
Tanna Evergreen
The Numake family established Tanna Evergreen Resort, starting with 4 thatched bungalows with shared facilities, situated just under a huge banyan tree.Besides the bungalows, Merian and Sam Numake also operated as a tour company, having Mt Yasur and Custom Village as their main attractions; they now have 8 other tours to choose from. Their first target market was backpackers, but Merian and Sam soon felt that they had to reach higher to make their establishment more competitive and affordable. They started renovating thebungalows in 2004, to guarantee the ability to cater for a wider market.Tanna Evergreen Bungalows managed to escalate their exposure after winning the Vanuatu Tourism Award of Best Island Bungalows in Vanuatu 2006. The award entitled Numake the funds to develop their website and design brochures and business cards. Although the bungalow architecture is traditional, they now hold some western inspired qualities to make the stay as comfortable as possible. The waves crashing against the shore is a welcoming lullaby after a memorable day full of activities on Tanna Island.
Evergreen Vanuatu
Evergreen Vanuatu, now seen as Vanuatu’s leading indigenous inbound tour operator, was established by the Malas family. The head office is situated in Port Vila, the hub of tourism. Evergreen offers both half-day as well as full-day tours around Efate and the outer islands. “When we first started operating, we were only 5 men working”, says Phillip with a little chuckle. “Now look at us!
