As we face the changing of seasons’, I want to wish you all the best and hope that everyone had a good thanksgiving. Your continued support is greatly appreciated as we continue to strive towards making changes for a better future. One of the initiatives that we are working hard on is communication. Changes are coming to the McLeod Lake website; allowing us to communicate meetings, agenda’s and any supporting documents. Please visit www.mlib.ca to ensure you are kept up to date with recent meetings and decisions. We have seen a lot of change in recent years, which has resulted in being recognized as one of the most successful businesses across Western Canada. This success has allowed all MLIb members to benefit and we continue to grow and diversify in order to bring future benefits to our community and members. We look forward to the future to ensure improvements are made to current programs and new programs are implemented.

2014 Annual General Assembly – AGA! On August 6-8, 2014 I attended and participated in the McLeod Lake General Assembly. On August 7th Chief and Council presented the McLeod Lake Indian Band 2013 Financial Statements to members and answered related questions. McLeod Lake Indian Band continues to improve Owners Equity (overall value of MLIB). At the AGA quite a number of members said that the Chief and Council Policy needed to be reviewed and amended for stronger governance and accountability, and said they would like to participate and be part of the review. Chief and Council welcomed the request by members to get involved, and have, as a result, identified a draft plan and Budget to review the Council Policy, Membership Code and Election Code. August 8th I attended the Family Day at the Historic Site. It was a great day with family, friends and food. For the first time, since I can remember we got rained on, however, it did not spoil spirits. Coincidently the entry gifts were umbrellas!

GRAND OPENING Tse’khene Food & Fuel Ltd.’s Grand Opening took place on September 20, 2014 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. People attended from Mackenzie, Bear Lake and Prince George, as well as people who were driving by and saw the sign and balloons at the highway. CHMM broadcast live from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Kandy Klijnsmit prepared hot dogs, chili and bannock for lunch and Anita Vallee made additional bannock on-site. T-shirts were given away as prizes and at the end of the day 3-$50 gas cards were given away as prizes. The gas cards went to Henry Honkanen from Mackenzie, Carol Smolski from Mackenzie and Shelby from Bear Lake. Thank you to everyone who helped out and contributed to the success of the grand opening, including: Band members who came out to show their support; Emcee Russ McLoud, Chief Derek Orr; Councillor Elizabeth Solonas; Councillor Destiny Bear; Elder Josie Tyler for cutting the ribbon; The TF&F Board of Directors Ken Solonas, Minnie Isadore, Kandy Klijnsmit, Russ Boyko, Rod Inglis; Mayor Stephanie Killam; CHMM for the live coverage; Rod Inglis for designing the t-shirts (I GOT GAS…); Marc Klijnsmit for having the t-shirts made and donating them for prizes; TF&F staff Anita Vallee and Jenine Solonas for working and providing their assistance; Kandy Klijnsmit for volunteering her time to prepare lunch; Anita Vallee for making bannock; and many, many others.
TSE’KHENE FOOD & FUEL NEWSLETTER October 2014 September was a busy month as more people heard we have a gas bar on-reserve. Staff were busy preparing for our Grand Opening, which was a big success for our band (see inset at left). Our tobacco license was granted three days before the grand opening, and now sell cigarettes. Government regulates the amount of tobacco products a First Nation can sell per month, based on its on-reserve and community population. TF&F has split its quota so that we make a weekly order. This will ensure that the store will have cigarettes throughout the month, and there will a minimal amount of inventory held at the store. There are 3 Band members employed at the gas bar. Anita Vallee is the only full time staff person with Amanda Isadore and Jenine Solonas filling in the remaining 27 hours. TF&F posted for the position of Store Manager with five people applying for the position. The position was offered to a Band member but this person declined due to another employment offer. A second Band member was offered the position but also declined the offer. Marc Klijnsmit has been on contract since midJuly, training staff for the management position. Marc’s contract will continue until one of the staff is ready to take on the Store Manager role. Sales have increased since the grand opening. Customers are getting to know our hours of operation and know that we will be open during those hours. Customers have commented on how clean and organized the store is (for such an itty-bitty place). All staff are very proud to be a part of such a great operation. The Operations committee continues to meet every Friday at 9am, to give updates and to see how the store is running. Tse’khene Community Development Corporation Board of Directors On September 25, 2014, Chief & Council appointed the following Band members to the Tse’khene Community Development Corporation Board of Directors, and the Tse’khene Food & Fuel Ltd. Board of Directors: Ken Solonas (returning) Minnie Isadore (returning) Kandy Klijnsmit (returning) Nathan Paul Prince (new) Jenine Solonas (new) The new Directors will receive Director training. The first Board meeting will be scheduled for the beginning of November. Meetings are open to Band members – we ask that you notify us in advance so that we can plan meals accordingly.

Tse’khene Community Development Corporation Annual Report - 2014 Annual Report This is a narrative report for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014 and is a companion document to the presentation of Auditor Jane Newman at the September 20, 2014 Annual General Meeting of Tse’khene Community Development Corporation (TCDC) in McLeod Lake, BC. TCDC was originally the McLeod Lake Indian Band Development Corporation. The new name was registered on November 14, 2013.
Annual Report Background Annual Report TCDC was established for the purposes of pursuing new community businesses. McLeod Lake Indian Band is ideally situated in a part of Canada that is experiencing strong economic growth. There is a great deal of opportunity to develop economic ventures around the tourism industry. McLeod Lake Indian Band’s Chief & Council will be announcing the new Board of Directors of the TCDC at the Annual General Meeting. This group meets a minimum of four times per year to review the financial and operational performance and to approve the strategic plan. Outgoing Directors are: Ken Solonas, Minnie Isadore, Russ Boyko, Kandy Klijnsmit, and Rod Inglis. TCDC is managed by Lucy Martin, hired in February 2014. She assists with the management of Tse’khene Food & Fuel Ltd. and promotes new business opportunities as they arise.

Applications for the Teck Canadian Aboriginal Bursary Award now open Twice per year, Teck partners with Indspire to offer up to $10,000 in bursaries to Aboriginal students, with a preference given to those living in areas where Teck operates. The Teck Canadian Aboriginal Bursary Award supports Aboriginal students who are attending a full-time certificate or diploma program from an accredited post-secondary institution and demonstrate financial need. To learn more about Teck, go to www.teck.com. To learn about Teck’s approach to sustainability, go to www.tecksustainability.com The bursary is organized and distributed by Indspire through their Building Brighter Futures Bursary and Scholarship Awards Program. Indspire is a charitable organization that is dedicated to raising funds to deliver programs that provide tools for indigenous peoples. There are several bursaries offered through Indspire. To apply for the Teck bursary, fill out the application form on indspire.ca and check the “Postsecondary Education� (PSE) box.
