DEAN FOR Academic Affairs Morrette Rider s u b m i t t e d his "Proposed Pattern of G e n e r a l Course Requirements for the H o p e College B a c h e l o r of A r t s D e g r e e " in D e c e m b e r . The other new proposal, simply entitled " C o r e Requirem e n t , " was c o m p l e t e d by C h a n c e l l o r William Vanderlugt last week. R I D E R ' S p r o p o s a l places the general r e q u i r e m e n t s u n d e r f o u r m a i n divisions; " I n t r o d u c t i o n t o Liberal S t u d i e s , " " C u l t u r a l Heritage," "Man and the Contemporary W o r l d , " a n d " S y n t h e s i s Senior Seminar." In g e n e r a l , the p r o p o s a l attempts to better integrate the general r e q u i r e m e n t s by r e p l a c i n g s o m e of t h e p r e s e n t c a t e g o r i e s

Administration still uncertain how much to hike 1972-73 fees by Bob Roos H o p e ' s a d m i n i s t r a t i o n is still in a q u a n d a r y as t o t h e a m o u n t s t u d e n t fees s h o u l d be raised f o r the 1972-73 school year, according t o E x e c u t i v e Vice P r e s i d e n t Clarence Handlogten. T H E R E A S O N f o r (he u n c e r t a i n t y , H a n d l o g t e n said, is the a m b i g u i t y of the federal Price C o m m i s s i o n ' s s t a n c e on cost h i k e s in h i g h e r e d u c a t i o n . "There's some question w h e t h e r we h a v e t o f o l l o w the 2.5 percent general price guideline e s t a b l i s h e d by t h e Price C o m m i s i o n , " he w e n t o n . He said t h a t W a y n e S t a t e U n i v e r s i t y was recently granted permission f r o m t h e Price C o m m i s s i o n t o raise its fees 1 7 p e r c e n t . HANDLOGTEN saw the W a y n e S t a t e d e c i s i o n as s i g n i f y i n g a general willingness o n the part of the Price C o m m i s s i o n to m a k e e x c e p t i o n s f r o m t h e 2.5 p e r c e n t guideline. " I f t h e y can a l l o w a 17 p e r c e n t increase at W a y n e S t a t e , what can t h e y say t o o t h e r s c h o o l s ? " he said. "I t h i n k t h e W a y n e S t a t e d e c i s i o n s p e a k s m o r e clearly of the Price C o m m i s s i o n ' s i n t e n t t h a n a n y t h i n g else w e ' v e s e e n . With t h e p u r c h a s e , t h e suit was d r o p p e d . The low bid was about $ 8 0 0 , 0 0 0 b e l o w the $ 3 , 2 5 0 , 0 0 0 e s t i m a t e d c o n s t r u c t i o n cost u s e d b y t h e college, H a n d l o g t e n s t a t e d . H e said t h e d i s p a r i t y w a s e m b a r rassing b e c a u s e t h e college h a d b e e n soliciting f u n d s l a t e i n t o t h e fall t o m a t c h t h e b u i l d i n g ' s estimated cost.

Werkman is appointed Hope business manager The appointment of Barry W e r k m a n as H o p e ' s b u s i n e s s m a n ager h a s been a n n o u n c e d by Clarence Handlogten, executive vice p r e s i d e n t . W e r k m a n , 29, h a s served as assistant business manager at H o p e sine J u n e 1 9 6 9 . He was f o r m e r l y a f a c u l t y m e m b e r in t h e department of e c o n o m i c s a n d business administration. A chicago native, Werkman holds an A.B. degree from H o p e a n d a M.B. d e g r e e in b u s i n e s s a d m i n i s t r a t i o n f r o m the University of W y o m i n g . H e t a u g h t in t h e S c h o o l of C o m m e r c e at F e r r i s State College before joining the Hope staff.

T H E NEW B U I L D I N G , part of t h e c o l l e g e ' s $ 1 0 million C e n t e n nial D e c a d e M a s t e r Plan, will h o u s e the d e p a r t m e n t s of b i o l o g y , chemistry, geology and psychology. It will be l o c a t e d o n College A v e n u e b e t w e e n 12th S t r e e t a n d G r a v e s Place. The Academic-Science Center will r e p l a c e t h e e x i s t i n g s c i e n c e b u i l d i n g w h i c h w a s c o n s t r u c t e d in 1942 w h e n t h e college had an e n r o l l m e n t of 5 0 0 s t u d e n t s . E n r o l l m e n t this y e a r is 2 , 1 0 0 . T h e e x i s t i n g s c i e n c e b u i l d i n g will be remodeled for other instructional purposes. T H E F I R S T F L O O R of t h e new b u i l d i n g will c o n t a i n m e c h a n ical a n d s t o r a g e r o o m s , g e o l o g y laboratories and a wood shop. O n t h e m a i n level will b e classrooms, a library and instructional r e s o u r c e s c e n t e r w i t h s t u d y carrels, large l e c t u r e halls t h a t will be available f o r g e n e r a l i n s t r u c t i o n a l purposes, seminar rooms, and exhibition space. T h e s e c o n d f l o o r will h o u s e t h e b i o l o g y d e p a r t m e n t , its l a b o r a t o r i e s , a m u s e u m , t w o special p r o ject l a b o r a t o r i e s , a n d a h e r b a r i u m .
