DEAN FOR Academic Affairs Morrette Rider s u b m i t t e d his "Proposed Pattern of G e n e r a l Course Requirements for the H o p e College B a c h e l o r of A r t s D e g r e e " in D e c e m b e r .

The other new proposal, simply entitled " C o r e Requirem e n t , " was c o m p l e t e d by C h a n c e l l o r William Vanderlugt last week.

R I D E R ' S p r o p o s a l places the general r e q u i r e m e n t s u n d e r f o u r m a i n divisions; " I n t r o d u c t i o n t o Liberal S t u d i e s , " " C u l t u r a l Heritage," "Man and the Contemporary W o r l d , " a n d " S y n t h e s i s Senior Seminar."

In g e n e r a l , the p r o p o s a l attempts to better integrate the general r e q u i r e m e n t s by r e p l a c i n g s o m e of t h e p r e s e n t c a t e g o r i e s

by Bob Roos H o p e ' s a d m i n i s t r a t i o n is still in a q u a n d a r y as t o t h e a m o u n t s t u d e n t fees s h o u l d be raised f o r the 1972-73 school year, according t o E x e c u t i v e Vice P r e s i d e n t Clarence Handlogten.

T H E R E A S O N f o r (he u n c e r t a i n t y , H a n d l o g t e n said, is the a m b i g u i t y of the federal Price C o m m i s s i o n ' s s t a n c e on cost h i k e s in h i g h e r e d u c a t i o n .

"There's some question w h e t h e r we h a v e t o f o l l o w the 2.5 percent general price guideline e s t a b l i s h e d by t h e Price C o m m i s i o n , " he w e n t o n . He said t h a t W a y n e S t a t e U n i v e r s i t y was recently granted permission f r o m t h e Price C o m m i s s i o n t o raise its fees 1 7 p e r c e n t .

HANDLOGTEN saw the W a y n e S t a t e d e c i s i o n as s i g n i f y i n g a general willingness o n the part of the Price C o m m i s s i o n to m a k e e x c e p t i o n s f r o m t h e 2.5 p e r c e n t guideline. " I f t h e y can a l l o w a 17 p e r c e n t increase at W a y n e S t a t e , what can t h e y say t o o t h e r s c h o o l s ? " he said. "I t h i n k t h e W a y n e S t a t e d e c i s i o n s p e a k s m o r e clearly of the Price C o m m i s s i o n ' s i n t e n t t h a n a n y t h i n g else w e ' v e s e e n . " A S F A R AS H o p e is c o n cerned, the Wayne State decision is a g o o d sign, H a n d l o g t e n indic a t e d , b e c a u s e t h e college " n e e d s

m o r e t h a n a 2.5 p e r c e n t increase.

T H E P R E P A R A T I O N began f o l l o w i n g f i n a l i z a t i o n Dec. 19 of an agreement for Hope to purc h a s e Mrs. M a r g u e r i t e P o l l o c k ' s p r o p e r t y at 1 4 6 E. G r a v e s PI. T h e agreement ends the threat that litigation c o u l d p o s t p o n e c o n s t r u c t i o n of t h e c e n t e r .

Mrs. P o l l o c k filed suit in O t tawa C o u n t y Circuit C o u r t Sept. 7 c h a r g i n g H o p e College a n d t h e Holland Zoning Appeals Board w i t h v i o l a t i o n of t h e c i t y z o n i n g o r d i n a n c e . With t h e p u r c h a s e , t h e suit was d r o p p e d .

C O N S T R U C T I O N of t h e center will c o m m e n c e i m m e d i a t e l y u p o n c o m p l e t i o n of site p r e p a r a t i o n , a c c o r d i n g t o E x e c u t i v e Vice President Clarence Handlogten.

T h e p r o j e c t e d c o m p l e t i o n d a t e is August 1973. The construction will be d o n e by P i o n e e r C o n s t r u c t i o n C o m p a n y of G r a n d R a p i d s .

P i o n e e r C o n s t r u c t i o n was selected f o l l o w i n g b i d d i n g Nov. 17 at w h i c h seven f i r m s s u b m i t t e d b i d s .

T h e Grand Rapids firm submitted a low bid of $ 2 , 4 4 5 , 4 0 0 . H o p e contracted with Pioneer Construct i o n Dec. 19.

T H E NEW C E N T E R was designed by Tarapata-MacMahonP a u l s o n A s s o c i a t e s , Inc. of B l o o m field Hills, Mich. P i o n e e r also built the Hope physics-mathematics hall in 1 % 4 .

The low bid was about $ 8 0 0 , 0 0 0 b e l o w the $ 3 , 2 5 0 , 0 0 0 e s t i m a t e d c o n s t r u c t i o n cost u s e d b y t h e college, H a n d l o g t e n s t a t e d .

H e said t h e d i s p a r i t y w a s e m b a r rassing b e c a u s e t h e college h a d b e e n soliciting f u n d s l a t e i n t o t h e fall t o m a t c h t h e b u i l d i n g ' s estimated cost.

Werkman is appointed Hope business manager The appointment of Barry W e r k m a n as H o p e ' s b u s i n e s s m a n ager h a s been a n n o u n c e d by Clarence Handlogten, executive vice p r e s i d e n t .

W e r k m a n , 29, h a s served as assistant business manager at H o p e sine J u n e 1 9 6 9 . He was f o r m e r l y a f a c u l t y m e m b e r in t h e department of e c o n o m i c s a n d business administration.

A chicago native, Werkman holds an A.B. degree from H o p e a n d a M.B. d e g r e e in b u s i n e s s a d m i n i s t r a t i o n f r o m the University of W y o m i n g . H e t a u g h t in t h e S c h o o l of C o m m e r c e at F e r r i s State College before joining the Hope staff.

T h e college also received a $ 2 million longt e r m , l o w - i n t e r e s t loan u n d e r T i t l e III of the s a m e g o v e r n m e n t act.

T H E NEW B U I L D I N G , part of t h e c o l l e g e ' s $ 1 0 million C e n t e n nial D e c a d e M a s t e r Plan, will h o u s e the d e p a r t m e n t s of b i o l o g y , chemistry, geology and psychology. It will be l o c a t e d o n College A v e n u e b e t w e e n 12th S t r e e t a n d G r a v e s Place.

The Academic-Science Center will r e p l a c e t h e e x i s t i n g s c i e n c e b u i l d i n g w h i c h w a s c o n s t r u c t e d in 1942 w h e n t h e college had an e n r o l l m e n t of 5 0 0 s t u d e n t s . E n r o l l m e n t this y e a r is 2 , 1 0 0 . T h e e x i s t i n g s c i e n c e b u i l d i n g will be remodeled for other instructional purposes.

T H E F I R S T F L O O R of t h e new b u i l d i n g will c o n t a i n m e c h a n ical a n d s t o r a g e r o o m s , g e o l o g y laboratories and a wood shop.

O n t h e m a i n level will b e classrooms, a library and instructional r e s o u r c e s c e n t e r w i t h s t u d y carrels, large l e c t u r e halls t h a t will be available f o r g e n e r a l i n s t r u c t i o n a l purposes, seminar rooms, and exhibition space.

T h e s e c o n d f l o o r will h o u s e t h e b i o l o g y d e p a r t m e n t , its l a b o r a t o r i e s , a m u s e u m , t w o special p r o ject l a b o r a t o r i e s , a n d a h e r b a r i u m .

"Even though students may not get t h e i r p r o p e r t y b a c k right a w a y , t h e r e p o r t s are i m p o r t a n t t o help us a n a l y z e w h e r e f u r t h e r i n v e s t i g a t i o n or p a t r o l is n e e d e d , " B a r e m a n said.

A F T E R A N o f f e n d e r is a p p r e h e n d e d , t h e s e c u r i t y f o r c e prepares a c o n f r o n t a t i o n report conc e r n i n g t h e i n c i d e n t and t h e n rec o m m e n d s a c t i o n t o the d e a n of students' office.

Bareman emphasized the need t o s t o p o f f e n d e r s early s o t h e college c o u l d w o r k w i t h t h e m b e f o r e it w o u l d b e c o m e n e c e s s a r y t o call in t h e p o l i c e . H e said his f o r c e p r e f e r s t o deal w i t h p r e v e n tion rather than apprehension.

D R U G O F F E N S E S on c a m p u s are h a n d l e d by b o t h C a m p u s Security and the dean's office.

B a r e m a n said t h e d e a n ' s o f f i c e is q u a l i f i e d t o h e l p s t u d e n t s if t h e y are a p p r e h e n d e d in t i m e , b e c a u s e t h e college can deal w i t h misd e m e a n o r s . F e l o n i e s , h o w e v e r , are reported to the Holland police.

With so m a n y Hope s t u d e n t s t a k i n g a d v a n t a g e of t h e n e w law, t h e p r o b l e m of s e a t i n g t h e n e w t i p p l e r s has m a d e t h e m a n a g e m e n t s of both establishments more stringent about checking for p r o p e r identification. Both claim t h e y will try t o please all t h e i r c u s t o m e r s as m u c h as possible, however.

Weeding o u t The recent submission of t w o new c u r r i c u l u m r e f o r m proposals t o the Chairmen's Council b r o u g h t the t o t a l number of proposals before the campus t o f o u r . T h e Academic A f f a i r s Board, w h i c h w i l l be faced w i t h t h e task of discussing the proposals and h a m m e r i n g o u t a c u r r i c u l u m revision plan acceptable to the f a c u l t y and the rest of the college c o m m u n i t y , has a d i f f i c u l t semester ahead. However, the board may s i m p l i f y its w o r k by immediately n o t i n g the most obvious defects in the newest r e f o r m proposals.

Dean Rider's proposal, s u b m i t t e d d u r i n g December, appears t o be the most wellthought o u t and innovative of the new crop of proposals. B y creating several new

interdisciplinary courses involving teamteaching methods, i t attempts t o mitigate the f r a g m e n t a t i o n and confusion that the student experiences in his program of required courses. Also, by allowing high school courses to satisfy basic college requirements in science, m a t h and foreign languages, the proposal prevents r e p e t i t i o n and insures t h a t the student has a suitable background f o r the interdisciplinary courses he must take.

However, w h i l e accepting the w o r t h of the k i n d of interdisciplinary courses Rider proposes, the question remains whether such courses, w i t h the team-teaching they involve, w i l l n o t create prohibitive administrative problems. A course such as Rider's proposed " M a n and His A r t i s t i c Express i o n , " taught in three-week segments by professors f r o m d i f f e r e n t departments, could become an administrative nightmare.

A d m i n i s t r a t i v e feasibility should be a major factor in the board's consideration of Rider's proposal.

The proposal s u b m i t t e d by Professor of Philosophy D. Ivan D y k s t r a is attractive in its brevity. It simplifies the core c u r r i c u l u m by requiring just 24 hours f r o m the three general areas of natural science, social science and the humanities, plus a three-

hour freshman course on the meaning of a Christian liberal arts education. However, the latter section needs e l a b o r a t i o n , f o r there is no indication of the specific content of the course or teaching p r e cedure. Also, Dykstra's proposal leaves the problem of integrating the required courses entirely t o the student. The board's handling of all the proposals w i l l depend largely on their decision whether the task of integration should be left t o the student or should be done for h i m t h r o u g h interdisciplinary courses, team-teaching and so on.

W i t h i n a little over one week of the lowering of the age of m a j o r i t y in Michigan it has become apparent that Holland's t w o student bars can n o t accomodate the increased number of legal student drinkers.

On week nights this week students at times have been unable to f i n d seats in either the Hollander Pub or Skiles Tavern. By Friday night some students were driving t o bars distant f r o m campus to d r i n k in less crowded conditions, and others, legally able to d r i n k in a tavern, were taking the short t r i p d o w n C o l u m b i a Ave. to purchase packaged booze they c o u l d tote back to their d o r m rooms.

Hope College w o u l d be foolish not to respond to this new situation. A n d responding does not mean shoving the drinking issue under the carpet to hide it f r o m concerned a l u m n i . A l t h o u g h unsavory to some people, it is a fact that many Hope students occasionally consume alcohol. It is also a fact that Holland's t w o local bars

Perhaps the least c o m m e n d a b l e aspect of the chancellor's proposal is the requirement that students take separate courses in the theology of the O l d and N e w Testaments. Such a requirement w o u l d drastically l i m i t the knowledge about religious behavior and the role of religion in society that students can acquire w i t h the present range of courses that satisfy the requirement. Aside f r o m this, administrative problems w o u l d probably result f r o m large numbers of students t r y i n g to waive the requirement.

A A B members w i l l ease the d i f f i c u l t task facing them if they q u i c k l y decide w h i c h provisions of the r e f o r m proposals are impracticable or t o o vague to m e r i t immediate consideration. Proposals w i t h such problems should be m o d i f i e d or returned to their authors for revision.

T o respond means that Hope College should seriously explore the options for p r o v i d i n g students w i t h more places t o d r i n k legally. The o p t i o n s include: • -Hope allowing d r i n k i n g in d o r m rooms. This is the new p o l i c y at Grand Valley State College.

- H o p e securing a private liquor license for d i s t r i b u t i o n of beer to students in the D e W i t t Student and C u l t u r a l Center, or elsewhere on campus.

- H o p e using its cor por ate influence to help persuade the H o l l a n d C i t y Council to okay a liquor license for another bar w i t h i n w a l k i n g distance of campus.

The Campus Life Board's h u r r i e d consideration last fall of possibly changing Hope's d r i n k i n g policy should be f o l l o w e d n o w , in light of the present situation, w i t h an in-depth study of student, f a c u l t y and alumni attitudes towards liberalizing Hope's d r i n k i n g rules.

A c e r t a i n a m o u n t of i n s e c u r i t y a n d s t a t u s s e e k i n g is a p a r t of t h e r e a s o n f o r j o i n i n g organizations, but not the p r i m a r y motive.

It m u s t also be n o t e d t h a t e v e r y s o c i e t y in h i s t o r y has w i t n e s s e d t h e e x i s t e n c e of o r g a n i z a t i o n s a n d has p r o g r e s s e d as a result, B l a n t o n s e e m s t o suggest t h e f u t i l i t y of o r g a n i z a t i o n s in g e n e r a l . But w h a t is t h e a l t e r n a t i v e ? Is it a p e r s o n a l i n d e p e n d e n t , isolationist existence? T o advocate such a p r e m i s e is failing t o r e c o g n i z e t h e basic c o m m u n a l n a t u r e of m a n . P e r h a p s B l a n t o n s u p p o r t s s u c h an o p i n i o n , b u t I h o p e n o t .

Two new entries

Curriculum proposals abound continued from page 1 p r o p o s a l t o t h e A A B in A p r i l 1970.

A slightly revised v e r s i o n of t h e p r o p o s a l was passed b y t h e A A B in Nov. 1 9 7 0 , b u t was a f t e r w a r d rejected by the faculty c o m m i t t e e of t h e w h o l e .

T H E F A C U L T Y a c c e p t e d in p r i n c i p l e t h e first t w o s e c t i o n s of the proposal, which stated the college's educational philosophy and objectives, but vetoed the a c t u a l p r o p o s e d c h a n g e s in t h e requirements. These were sent bac k t o t h e A A B f o r r e v i s i o n .

T h e A A B is still d e b a t i n g h o w t o revise t h e s e c t i o n of t h e p r o posal w h i c h t h e f a c u l t y r e j e c t e d .

In its p r e s e n t f o r m t h e p r o p o s a l would establish a "Liberal S t u d i e s Program" for freshmen which w o u l d c o n s i s t of eight t o ten h o u r s of r e q u i r e d c o u r s e s .

T H E P R O G R A M would form a separate department administered by a d i r e c t o r a n d a c o m m i t t e e of three faculty members.

T h e 1 9 7 0 p r o p o s a l w o u l d retain t h e p r e s e n t s e n i o r s e m i n a r p r o g r a m w i t h little c h a n g e , b u t it would alter the arrangement which n o w requires a specified n u m b e r of h o u r s in t h e a r e a s of l i t e r a t u r e , a r t , h i s t o r y , social science and mathematics, foreign l a n g u a g e , religion, and p h y s i c a l education.

I N S T E A D , it w o u l d e s t a b l i s h f o u r m a i n c o u r s e areas - t h e I n h e r i t e d World, the B e h a v i o r a l World, t h e N a t u r a l W o r l d , a n d t h e S y m b o l i c World - and r e q u i r e nine h o u r s f r o m each area.

A " C o n t r a c t C u r r i c u l u m " also f o r m s a m a j o r part of t h e 1 9 7 0 proposal. This would allow a l i m i t e d n u m b e r of s t u d e n t s t o w r i t e t h e i r o w n c u r r i c u l u m in c o n s u l t a t i o n with a f a c u l t y m e m ber. T H E C O N T R A C T curriculum would a t t e m p t to m a k e a greater allowance f o r individuality by perm i t t i n g s o m e s t u d e n t s t o use a curriculum which does not conf o r m completely with the general requirements.

T h e p r o p o s a l d r a w n u p in 1 9 7 0 was t h e o n l y o n e u n d e r c o n s i d e r a t i o n u n t i l last N o v e m b e r , w h e n P r o f e s s o r of P h i l o s o p h y D. Ivan Dykstra submitted a new one to the AAB. D Y K S T R A ' S proposal would cut r e q u i r e d h o u r s t o 2 4 , with t h e stipulation that the student take at least o n e c o u r s e f r o m each of the t h r e e areas of n a t u r a l s c i e n c e , social s c i e n c e a n d h u m a n i t i e s .

D y k s t r a w o u l d also r e q u i r e s t u dents to take a three-hour course d u r i n g t h e i r first s e m e s t e r t o p r o vide " c l e a r o r i e n t a t i o n i n t o t h e m e a n i n g of ' H o p e College o f f e r s a liberal a r t s e d u c a t i o n in t h e c o n t e x t s of a C h r i s t i a n f a i t h . T h e b u z z i n g of c o n v e r s a t i o n , the gurgling of c o f f e e p o t s a n d the i n c e s s a n t r i n g i n g of t e l e p h o n e s w h i c h c h a r a c t e r i z e d a c t i v i t y in the " P s y c h H o u s e " have given way t o the r u m b l i n g s of b u l l d o z e r s and the shouts of w o r k m e n : the f o r m e r M a c B r y d e C o t t a g e , which for years h o u s e d H o p e ' s psychology d e p a r t m e n t , n o w lies in rubble.

U N H O U S E D BY p r o g r e s s , the psychology d e p a r t m e n t has taken u p r e s i d e n c e in t h e c o f f e e - s t a i n e d old K l e t z , a n d t h e o l d K l e t z will never be t h e s a m e , p a r t l y b e c a u s e of t h e d e p a r t m e n t ' s f i x a t i o n at an earlier s t a g e of d e v e l o p m e n t . " W e have saved a f e w r e m n a n t s of t h e old b u i l d i n g , " r e m a r k s Dr. David M y e r s , a s s o c i a t e p r o f e s s o r of psychology. "Some people were a t t a c h e d t o t h e h o u s e , and m a n y of us b e c a m e scavengers, p i c k i n g u p a r t i f a c t s at r a n d o m , " he c o n t i n u e d , p o i n t i n g t o a large piece of o n e of the c o l u m n s of t h e old s t r u c t u r e w h i c h n o w o c c u p i e s a p r o m i n e n t place in t h e p s y c h offices.
