News Keynote address emphasizes triumphs of women in Civil Rights movement

by Julie Thornes anchor news editor "Without the women, there never would've been a Civil Rights m o v e m e n t ! " announced Bernice Johnson Reagon as she commenced her keynote speech, "Women as a Cultural Force in the Civil Rights Movement."

Her outfit w a s of a soft blue color, but a striking red turtle-neck set off by bright red earrings added a spark that paralleled her personality.

"Things w e (women) do are not valued in society's structure!" Reagon said. She then continued to list black women and the unknown but crucial parts they played in the Civil Rights movement.

Songs were an integral part of the m o v e m e n t s i n c e it w a s through the old songs that s l a v e s had the freedom to express their hatred for slavery. Betsy Jones, who sang with a group in Georgia, said, a c c o r d i n g to Reagon, "To be a slave w a s to be trapped in no existence...but w e did it...we did it through the old songs, and w e still sing them the way (slaves) did."

The songs were the first step toward a unified protest against racial discrimination.

From that point, the beginning stages of the movement were handed to Black women like Septima Clark who pulled the nation, up a few more notches toward a war against inequality.

Septima Clark graduated from high school and immediately began working as principal of John's Island School off the coast of Charleston, S C. She had one teacher under her along with over one hundred students in a ramshackle, one-room schoolhouse. She w a s forced to work in these conditions because Charleston would not hire black teachers.

Clark did not accept these stan-

dards She fought back in 1919 by obtaining 10,000 signatures in support of hiring black teachers She won that c a s e but w a s not finished yet. Next, she sued the state of South Carolina for equal pay since that disparity w a s yet to be overcome. As a result, her pay increased from $35 a month to $400 a month.

In 1952 Clark w a s fired for being "too radical." She even lost her pension. At this point, she set up citizenship schools across the South. She w a s 75 years old when she retired, and then Septima Clark ran for the school board and won. Clark sat on the school board until she became ill. Her life's work served a s a strong example of what w a s possible to accomplish for those who followed her.

"I didn't think of myself largely as a woman. I thought of myself as an individual with a certain amount of sense of the need of people to participate in the movement. That is the territory that women operate in.

That is what women do and that is women's work!" Such are the words of Ella Baker a s stated by Bernice Johnson Reagon.

Congress needs money for pastor's meal plan

Student Congress has cooperated with a six-church program in bringing a South African pastor to Hope to study at the Western Theological Seminary. This provides an opportunity for the pastor to live and study in a peaceful environment based on equality. Hope students also benefit from the cultural influence and knowledge the visitor brings.

In support of this process, and appreciation for the pasjipr's presence at Hope, in the past,

Student Congress has purchased a 15-meal plan for the pastor.

With the budget crunch this year, h o w e v e r , the Appropriations Committee decided that Student Congress could not cover it alone.

Food Service agreed to pay for the half of the ticket that c o v e r s the food. The other iialf concerning overhead, such a s electricity and dishes, is being billed to the business office.

Student Congress is currently raising money with voluntary contributions in order to help provide for the pastor. Âťi S a m u e l M a l u l e k e is t h a t pastor. His wife Noelle, three-

year-old daughter Hanganai and seven-week-old daughter Nkateko have recently joined him from South Africa. All are sharing a 21-meal plan.

Sam Maluleke is from the Johannesburg area. He has a Masters of Theology and is presently s t u d y i n g ^ P r a c t i c a l Theology and Pastoral Care at Western Theological Seminary.

The church of which he is a m e m b e r is the E v a n g e l i c a l Presbyterian Church in South Africa. This is Calvinist and, thus, similar to Reformed.

Pinkham appointed as new alumni director HOPE -- Janet Pinkham has joined the staff of Hope College as the new alumni director.

A 1984 H o p e g r a d u a t e , Pinkham brings her abilities and training in communication, and her e x p e r i e n c e s w i t h and memories of Hope, to the position, which she started on Jan. 9.

While at Hope, she earned majors in German and communication. In her graduate work at the University of Kansas, she earned a master's degree in organizational communication.

Since graduating, she has not only earned her Master s degree 'out also worked as a service representative for Manpower of Southeast Michigan and most recently a s a marketing advisor for Avfuel Corporation in Ann Arbor, Mi. Her title at Hope is assistant director for college advancement, and she works out of the public relations office. " I ' m l o o k i n g f o r w a r d to meeting more Hope graduates, working more closely with them in planning their activities so that their meetings m a y bring the most benefit and joy to Uiem possible," Pinkham said. ^I'm

While a Hope student, P i n k h a m w a s involved with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship, w a s a disc jockey wi(h the college's radio station, participated in Nykerk and was a m e m b e r of the German Club and International Relations Club.

Her current interests include several outdoor activites. "I enjoy the outdoors quite a bit. I am an'avid tennis, c a m p i n g and biking fan. I'm a l s o a figure skater," she said.

Pinkham's husband, Steve Pinkham, is a 1983 Hope College graduate. He w a s a German major at Hope, and in October earned his master's d e g r e e in German from the Unversity of Kansas.

Pinkham explained that she intends to maintain an "open door " policy with the Hope alumni. "I think it's very important that if you're an alumni director that you be accessible to the alumni," she said, ' i want alumni' to feel free to call or visit m e . "

Every fall they put out "Felicitations" for the incoming freshman to cover their operating costs for the year.

Pledging takes place over a six week period with one or two events each week. There is no hazing involved a s the f r a t e r n i t y is against it. Jekel elected national secretary HOPE - Dr. Eugene Jekel, the Edward A. and Elizabeth Hofma Professor of chemistry at Hope College, has been elected treasurer of Alpha Epsilon Delta, a national honor society for students enrolled in college premedical programs.

Dr. Jekel serves as faculty sponsor to the Hope College chapter of Alpha Epsilon Delta.

He also serves as the college's chief advisor to Hope students planning to e p ^ r the health professions.

(HOPE) - The Hope College cheerleading squad will sponsor its 18th annual clinic for high school cheerleaders Saturday, January 28. Approximately 500 freshman, JV and varsity cheerleaders from high schools throughout Michigan will participate in the clinic, to be held in the Dow Center.

by Jon Hofman anchor staff writer When the Holland Fire Department reached Durfee 219, Sunday afternoon at 3:30, the only evidence there had been a fire was the melted remains of an aquarium power filter, the ashes of a half burnt Domino's pizza box and the residue left by a fire e x t i n g u i s h e r w i e l d e d by freshman Jay Bomers.

Bomers had been studying in his room when the fire alarm went off at 3:21 p.m. Stepping into the hallway, he smelled smoke coming from the room opposite his and opened the door to investigate. "When I saw the fire, I got the extinguisher and put it out," Bomers later said, playing down his level-headed handling of the situation. The fire extinguisher was in a wall cabinet less than ten feet down the hallway.

Sophmore Mark Van Maanen, who lives in room 219, w a s down the hall watching a movie when the alarm went off. While leaving the building, he noticed B o m e r s s p r a y i n g the extinguisher into his room Van Maanen, who is a student Public Safety Officer, went to assist but found that Bomers had already succeeded in extingushing the flames.

Higher Horizons is popular program at Hope College

by Carrie Maples anchor assistant news editor In the spring of 1964, two Hope professors and several students felt there was a need to make the college and community closer.

They c a m e up with the idea of tutoring neighborhood kids. Over the y e a r s , Higher Horizons developed into more of a Big Brother-Big Sister type program. By 1974 the program had grown beyond what the college could easily m a n a g e and w a s given to Child and Family Services.

Child and F a m i l y Services is a private, non-profit organization that handles everything from adoption to substance abuse.

Hope still provides office s p a c e in Mulder Cottage and s o m e funding. Forty to fifty percent of Higher Horizon's volunteers are Hope students and thirty percent of the kids in the program still come from the neighborhood.

The kids involved in the program are a g e s 5-15 and often come from a single parent h o m e where the parent just doesn't have the time he-she feels the child needs. Children are also r e c o m m e n d e d * by s c h o o l

counselors, t e a c h e r s , and ministers for many reasons.

Higher Horizons then tries to match the child with a volunteer who shares the s a m e interests.

Often the two keep in touch long after the volunteer graduates.

The process of uniting the two is f a i r l y s i m p l e t h o u g h sometimes it takes quite a while.

1. Jim Johnson, coordinator of the program, m e e t s with the child and family to get to know the child and the circumstances.

2. A volunteer fills out an application and the office checks into his or her background.

3. The volunteer interviews with Jim Johnson.

4. The volunteer and Jim select a child to meet and then Jim arranges a meeting.

From then on it's up to the volunteer to get together with the child though the office monitors the relationship. The two usually spend four to five hours a week together and Higher Horizons occasionally plans group activities.

Jim Johnson stressed the great need for volunteers, especially male, to match up with the 136 children in the Holland area waiting for a friend. If you are interested in being that friend contact 4 Jim at 394-7875.

More News Many factors contribute to hike in Hope's tuition

by Glen Oosterhoff Special to the anchor In addition to all the normal activities at Hope this Thursday and Friday, something else is happening on campus that affects each and every student, especially those returning next fall. For two days the Hope College Board of Trustees will meet to discuss the plans and recommendations of the Administration c o n c e r n i n g various academic and financial matters.

The Board of Trustees is the highest governing body of the college and is composed of r e s p e c t e d Hope alumni and friends from all across the nation. The Board also contains four standing committees, each of which deals with a specific aspect of the college's management.

Behind all the closed doors, b u s i n e s s s u i t s and c a t e r e d meals, very important decisionmaking a c t i u l l y takes place at their periodic meetings. Among other topics, the Board will discuss such things as faculty promotion r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s , tenure decisions, honorary d e g r e e s and i n v e s t m e n t strategies. • The discussions of the Business and Finance Committee will be of particular interest to the student body since on Thursday afternoon the Board will study the financial forecast for the college and act on the Administration's recommendations concerning tuition, fees, employee compensation and all other costs.

These budget decisions will then determine our tuition and room and board costs for 1989-90.

Although a raise in tuition really would not surprise those of us who have been at Hope for a couple of years, it is important that the students understand what influences the decisions of the Administration when they prepare the budget and determine what it will cost each of us.

For this reason. President Jacobson and Bill Anderson, the Vice President for Business and Finance, responded to concerns raised by Student Congress last year about the tuition hikes by consenting to meet with m e and the Student Congress officers throughout the fall semester to explain this process and enable us to voice our opinions. Here are some of the factors that will contribute to this year's decision: First of all, enrollment projections for next year have been studied. Although the number of new students at Hope has steadily increased the past few years, the college does not plan to let it grow any further. Consequently, the extra tuition and fees Hope has received from a growing student body are not expected next year, resulting in higher costs per student.

More important are the projected increases in the various operating costs that the college incurs throughout the year. One e x a m p l e is t h e V a n W y l e n library. Although gifts to the College completely paid for its original construction, the annual operating and maintenance costs are part of the overall yearly budget, which is 70 percent driven by student tuition. The maintenance and operation of the library costs about $100 per student, not including the student

and faculty salaries associated with its services. Continued conern is expressed for ongoing repairs and upkeep of our campus, although the college community will benefit from a more valuable and attractive campus.

In addition, costs for new, state-of-the-art equipment have increased exponentially in the past few years, and Hope's struggle to keep up with technology is expensive.

However, students here enjoy things such as excellent research facilities, a free campus-wide mainframe computer, free laser printing and many new microcomputers, all of which facilitate the learning process at Hope and are not universally offered at other schools.

Considering recent events at the college, it has also been decided to place campus safety as a top financial priority. Staffing and patrols have been increased, new locks h a v e been installed in m a n y women's dorms, lighting on campus has been increased, emergency phones have been added throughout c a m p u s and professional safety consultants w e r e hired to help secure our campus.

Although these costs are significant, the largest expenditures of the college are related to the salaries of its faculty and staff. Faculty salaries at Hope have been traditionally lower than compensation at similar institutions and the College has continuously struggled to "catch up". Even though many professors who teach here do so for several reasons other than the money they receive, it is important that they receive

fair compensation to promote faculty retention and morale.

Each year salaries must be adjusted for inflation and cost of living increases, as well as for pay raises associated with merit or promotion. In addition, the Administration needs salaries that are competitive with other institutions to attract the high quality faculty to which we have become accustomed.

Hope also finds it important to offer many other "value added" services that cost a little extra but whose benefits far outweigh their costs. For example, student help centers such as the Academic Support Center, the Job P l a c e m e n t Office, and the Chaplain's office each cost the individual student $25-50 per year.

There are also sports teams, choir trips and recreational facilities that contribute to the general budget.

Unfortunately, the burden of increased costs falls directly on the shoulders of the student body.

Although about 30 percent of the cost of a Hope education is absorbed by gifts, bequests, endowment fund proceeds and other peripheral activities such a s summer conferences, our f e e s are the only figure the college can truly regulate and control.

The endowment fund, money permanently invested by the College, is roughly a tenth of other GLCA schools, partly because of a college policy to not use tuition money to increase the endowment.

Increased costs also must be balanced with increased financial aid, one of the fastest growing budget a r e a s due to federal and state cutbacks. Approx-

imately 60 percent of all students here are on s o m e form of Hope financial aid, compared to about 30 p e r c e n t in o t h e r GLCA schools.

And increased costs have become a necessity at col leges nationwide.

Based on a survey done by another Michigan college, Hope's proposed increases in total tuition and f e e s are not in the highest, but rather in the lower middle range a s compared to other school's projections, which run as high a s 15 percent (Last year's increase was around 8 percent.)

As 44 the a n c h o r " recently noted, Hope is progressively becoming a better institution each year, where one can enjoy a quality learning atmosphere within an attractive c a m p u s and receive an excellent education from dedicated professors. Collectively we are helping Hope College strive for excellence and build upon our national reputation. It will continue to cost more m o n e y , but a f t e r discussing these issues with the President and Bill Anderson, it s e e m s ob vious that the Administration is sincerely trying to keep Hope Collge affordable, continuing a strong c o m m i t m e n t to affordability and suffiencient financial aid, and to m a k e any inc r e a s e s a s reasonable as possible.

Inn comfy but disappointing If y o u ' r e l o o k i n g f o r a r e s t a u r a n t with g o o d food, reasonable prices and decent service, the Beechwood Inn m a y not be for you.

A p p e a r a n c e s are definitely d e c e i v i n g . D r i v i n g by, the Beechwood Inn looks to be a cozy, quaint little place.

Sometimes at night they even have Christmas lights on the trees outside. Perhaps the owners actually had the intention of making it look like the Hatch or Point West, or maybe it is just a g o o d w a y t o b r i n g in customers. Either way, the inside is nothing like the outside.

To begin, the inside of the restaurant is reminiscent of family-style restaurants like the Parkway. In the Parkway's case, it works. At the Beechwood Inn, though, it just s e e m s a bit disap-

pointing.

The food is a bit disappointing as well. The prime rib is nothing like you would expect for the price, for example. E v e n if it hadn't been lukewarm, it still would have been tough.

The s e r v i c e isn't the best either. Waiting fifteen minutes just for silverware isn't anyone's idea of a good time, and the waitresses apparently don't like to check back with the customers to see how the meal is going. If you want to get one's attention at the Beechwood Inn, you'll probably have to get up and ask.

The one r e d e e m i n g factor about the Beechwood Inn is that they have a fairly extensive drink list. Everything from Daiquiris to Blue Hawaiians is on the menu. However, that doesn't matter to most college students.

The fact that this restaurant is a family restaurant that happens to serve drinks doesn't make the Beechwood Inn very appealing to the a v e r a g e college student. In fact, it's hard to see what anyone would find appealing about this restaurant, other than the fact that you don't have to cook the food yourself.

On second thought, maybe you'd be better off if you did.

However, the amount of money granted to students also rose during the s a m e period. Much of the increased loan money was given to middle-class students, who had been m a d e eligible for student loans for the first time.

Student life, regardless of who started the shift to loans, has been changed a s a result.

Liberal arts students, for example, changed their majors from lower-paying careers like teaching to more lucrative fields because they knew they'd need to repay loans, some said.

"Students know they are going to graduate with large debt, and that affects what classes they pick, what majors they choose, what jobs they select when they graduate," claimed Arlette Slachmuylder, president of the State Student Association of N e w York.

Tuition primed to go up

by Michael O'Keefe (CPS) - Tuition appears to be primed to rise again nationwide.

While nothing is official yet, a look at the budgets now being considered by state legislatures, regents and trustees around the country suggest that the prices of c o l l e g e will be significantly higher next year.

Oregon Gov. Neil Goldschmidt, for example, Submitted a budget Jan. 4 to his state legislature that, if passed, would translate

into a 5 percent hike for most state students and a 10 percent hike for studnts at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University.

"A 6-to-8 percent increase is a s good a guess a s any" for students nationwide, said Art Hauptman, an education consultant to the American Council on Education, after scanning such early indicators.

Tuitions for 1968-89 rose an average 7 percent over 1987-88, according to the College Board

The inflation rate in the United States - the increase in prices for general items from c a r s to shoes - w a s "only" 4 percent during the s a m e time.

As a result, the average 4-year public school student is paying $1,483 in tuition this year, while students pay an a v e r a g e $6,457 to go to private 4-year colleges, $750 to got to public 2-year colleges and $4,415 to g o to private 2-year campuses, the College Board figured last fall.

Finals still a nightmare for some (CPS) - Finals m a y s e e m like a bad dream to m a n y students.

Now a professor has found they're a nightmare that doesn't go away.

Many people report still having nightmares about finals 20 years after graduating from college.

Dr. Anne Shurling, a psychology professor at T r a n s y l v a n i a University in Kentucky, reported Jan. 9.

Shurling surveyed people who graudated from Transylvania from 1968 to 1978, and found that 27 had bad dreams about finals while they were in school. Of the people who had the dreams, 82 percent said they still occasionally have nightmares about the tests.

Finals, Shurling said, consist of "three or four days of intense pressure that is repeated at the

end of each semester. A student who successfully completes four y e a r s of c o l l e g e will h a v e undergone a s many a s eight sessions of final e x a m i n a t i o n s .

Repeated pressure of that nature can very easily have a lasting effect."

The most c o m m o n dreams were of not being able to find the classroom where the test was to be given and of forgetting to drop the class.

Performing with different puppets and dummies including a large banana, a parrot, an Irish leprachaun named Bob and B o b s grandpap, Wedgewood played the straight man to the puppets' jokes Wedgewood was at his funniest when he had his dummies in teract with audience members mainly by making c o m m e n t s about them. While Wedgewood feigned embarrassment his par rot m a d e m i l d l y l e c h e r o u s remarks to differnet coeds who took the good humored com ments in stride Pal, the leprachaun, broke up the audience when he started talking to a college student in the audience who was laughing even before the punchlines of the jokes.

Wedgewood, had Pat throwing out the first lines to old jokes like "Why did the chicken cross the road." When the lady laughed from embarrassment, Bob said, "She's e a s y , " referring to how easy it was to a m u s e her.

When he squeezed and the mouths opened, he sang a rap as if they were his dummies After Wedgewood finished his f o r t y - f i v e m i n u t e a c t , SAC started the Casino Night proper with Black Jack tables, a raffle, a horse racing wheel and a roulette wheel. Each student or sibling received fifteen chips at the door to play with at the different tables.

Gambling continued for two hours until midnight with all the tables doing brisk business.

On the Write Track: Confessions of a computer skeptic Is there anyone, but m e , who has never written a paper on a computer? My 1989 New Year's resolution w a s "no more handwritten, revised, rewritten, typed, proofread, and retyped papers."

For a long time, I have known the benefits of writing papers on a computer. E v e n just using the computer a s a typewriter allows you to adjust margins and m a k e corrections after the paper is finished. You can also c o m p o s e a rough draft on paper, type it into the computer, m a k e revisions, print it out, show it to your professor or a writing consultant at the Academic Support Center, and then g o back and m a k e revisions quickly and easily. Some writers c o m p o s e papers at the computer. This helps them to write quickly, a s ideas c o m e to them. Later they can go back and cut u n n e c e s s a r y information.

But this is old news. If writing with a computer is so fantastic, then why are there still people like m e who write each draft by hand and then type out a final version on a typewriter?

Perhaps it is because w e aren't sure how to get started. To find out where to begin, I went to Computer Services. They explained that Hope College computers are equipped with Word P e r f e c t w o r d p r o c e s s i n g software. You can use Word Perfect on either the VAX mainframe or the Zenith micro computers.

Learning to use these s y s t e m s is much easier than I thought.

Even a computer skeptic can be using Word Perfect in less than half an hour. To learn how, you can go to the terminal room in Kollen or in VanderWerf and ask a. consultant there to show you

The ad, which features three women in Budweiser bathing suits provocatively sprawled on a Budweiser towel, has run in scores of publications on other campuses without much formal comment.

Mike F l e m i n g of Fleishman Hillard, the company's St. Louis public relations firm, contended he's received no other complaints about the ad.

But at FAU, a group largely from the Women's Studies Department, circulated petitions asking students not to "consume

There are also manuals available in the bookstore for $1.50 that explain how to use Word Perfect at Hope (yellow cover). I found the manual wellwritten and easy to follow.

I encourage other computer skeptics to use a computer just once this semester. Like me, you may find that the benefits of writing papers on a computer outweigh the initial cost of learning how.

Chemical bomb explodes in Emersonian dorm

by Mpine Qakisa anchor staff writer Two chemical bombs that exploded in front of the Emersonian Hall head resident's door last week c a u s e d d a m a g e estimated at more than $1000. No injuries w e r e reported, however, according to Director of Public Safety Ray Gutknecht.

The head resident of Emersonian, Steve D e Jong, said that the chemical bombs ate a w a y at the carpeting and sprayed the walls and windows in front of his door, when they exploded on Saturday, January 14 at about 1:10 a.m.

Steve Boeve, a resident assistant at Emersonian, said that he was in the basement with a friend when the first explosion went off. They quickly went upstairs to s e e what w a s happening, he said.

"We found one pop bottle lying

on the floor and the other bottle had started to expand," Boeve said. "We went around and looked through the window and saw the second bottle exploding."

The fumes from the bombs apparently filled the hallway, and Boeve explained that they quickly opened the doors to let the smoke out before the fire alarms went off.

-protected American medical students and achieved a minor military victory by ordering the invasion of Grenada.

-helped turn the economy around; inflation dropped, unemployment leveled off somewhat, interest rates fell and purchases of housing increased.

-established a foreign policy platform leading to a near-ending to the ''cold war** and renewed SALT negotiations.

-hammered out a treaty with the USSR over the limitations of medium-range ballistic missiles in Europe.

-stood up for American safety abroad by bombing Libya after a Libyan terrorist attack.

-sent relief to Mexico and Armenia after their disastrous earthquakes.

-alienated Central Americans by attempting to extradite and prosecute Manuel Noriega.

-attempted to abolish the United States Department of Education, -attempted to coerce colleges to adopt courses incorporating "family values" into their schedules.

-approved tax breaks for Bob Jones University, a private religious college that forbids interracial dating.

-asked librarians at colleges to report which foreign students and library patrons checked out what books.

-lost many cohorts and staff m e m b e r s to resignations and-or criminal trials and convictions, including Haig, Watt, Stockton, Weinberger, Meese and Regan.

So, in retrospect, was Reagan really the "great communicator," or w a s he just the "teflon president?" And will George Bush be any better or any worse than Ronald Reagan? In any event, it will be hard for Bush to continue to balance the bad with the good as Reagan s e e m s to have done s o effectively. Rather, it is more likely that Bush's y e a r s in office will be judged to be either primarily good or primarily bad, effective or ineffective.

This article w a s written as a satire of an e s s a y , w r i t t e n in 1729, by Jonathan Swift. Inklings school of medicine 50 beagles were closed in wood boxes. They were then irradiated with different levels of X-rays. The dogs vomited, had diarrhea, and lost their a p p e t i t e s . L a t e r t h e y hemorrhaged from their mouths and anuses. Twenty-one dogs died within 9 and 39 d a y s after the experiment. The experiment determined the lethal dose at which 50 percent of the animals will die (LD50).

Kurt tells us that scientists would never h a v e to wonder whether a given product e f f e c t s humans the s a m e a s the animal they kill.

In experiments for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration 30 beagles and 30 pigs w e r e given massive doses of a pesticide, called methoxychlor. It w a s put in their food e v e r y d a y for six months. Within e i g h t w e e k s eleven dogs showed signs of unusual b^iavior such a s nervousness, s p a s m s , and finally convulsions and collapse. After a dog recovered from convulsions it was appeared blind and uncoordinated. Any further stimulus such a s squirting it with water, touching, or stomping on the floor near the dog initiated another convulsion. After experimenting on 20 m o r e dogs the scientists concluded that methoxychlor produces different

I don't think that Bouman's article can be called a satire of Swift's essay. It is a perversion.

It's hard to believe that it's only a few m o r e months to graduation. If you're graduating in May, too, you know exactly what I mean. It s e e m s like just a few days ago, I was starting m y freshman year at Hope.

I t ' s r e a l l y s o r t of s a d , graduating. No matter how much I complained, skipped c l a s s or pulled all-nighters, I wouldn't trade m y Hope College experience for anything. I've learned so much in just four years, Maybe it's time to pass on s o m e of that knowledge.

So here's a sampling of s o m e of the things I've learned in m y four years at Hope: - E n g l i s h and History: World Lit I will help you with Ancient History, but the s a m e is not always true for World Lit II and Modern. Maybe that's because World Lit I, Ancient History and Modern History are all boring, while World Lit II is actually tolerable.

-Political Science: I'm a liberal.

But not necessarily when it comes to clothing.

- E c o n o m i c s : "Disposable inc o m e " doesn't mean that you have to spend it all.

-Accounting: If you're not sure, call it a fixed cost.

- P o e t r y : It doesn't have to r h y m e - o r m a k e sense.

-Philosophy: It doesn't have to rhyme or m a k e sense either.

- B r i t i s h Literature: If your course is titles "Dryden to Austen" or something similar, chances are you'll read little of either author.

- A r t : Art of the Cinema is a lot more interesting than Art of the Renaissance.

- B i o l o g y : The grade looks just as bad when they use your social security number instead of your

- I n s t e a d of dialing the campus operator and asking for your friend's phone number and then dialing it yourself, have the operator connect you directly, Saves wear and tear on the phone, which means you won't have to call technical services, Not that they'd return your call anyway.

After a few daysof asking the operator to dial the number for you, they'll gladly send you a s many copies as you like.

- I m m e d i a t e l y after your semester's tuition is paid, submit a "change of address" form listing your c a m p u s address a s your permanent one. Then change it back again a few days bgfore the next semester, so that your grades don't get sent home.

This works especially well if your parents have a habit of opening your grades up and claiming that they "thought it w a s another bill from the college."

- S i t either in the very front of the class or on the sides. It's a wellknown fact (honestly) that those are the best places to sleep unseen. Of course, the best place to sleep unseen is back in your room.

Seriously, though, Hope's a great place to live and work, and the best tips of all are to have fun, study hard, keep yourself involved and make the most out of your time here. After all, four y e a r s will have gone by before you know it.

JIM M O N N E T T After rush ends, there will be many new pledge c l a s s e s for the sororities and fraternities. This in itself is hardly earth shattering or even directly relevant to the topic at hand except as an example or a phenomenon that piques my curiosity.

Supposedly at Hope and across the country, there is s o m e mysterious social force that transforms people when they accept pledge bids into the stereotype of that organization, Once you join a greek fraternity or sorority you're supposed to suddenly become the stereotype of that organization. This is labeling, folks, and it goes on all the time.

Women's Week?

I use the greek s y s t e m a s an example just a s a stepping stone.

Just as each fraternity carries a reputation, whether or not it has anything similar to truth not withstanding, everybody gets labeled by others. And personally, the whole process is starting to ruffle my feathers (if I speak like that, how do you label m e ? )

Labels come from the outside and often stick with us long after they are initiated. Some people like Nixon m a y never live their label down. E v e n if Nixon never lies again, he will forever be and women will only be conknown as a liar. Maybe it's because a f e m a l e is still sized up in terms of her "knockers" and because she is c a l l e d a " g i r l " until she graduates from college. do with personality. But when w e label people with s o m e racial slur even in jest, we're continuing the label and the stereotype.

If labels are going to be used wouldn't it be a lot better to label people with good labels like f r i e n d l y , c a r i n g , happy, intelligent etc., none of which has anything to do with skin color or greek letter Let m e turn back to the pledging for a moment. E v e n after pledges have been labeled with the stereotype of that organization, they are labeling others the s a m e way by those charming n i c k n a m e s for I n d e p e n d e n t s most of which can never be printed here (I m a y publish a list later if there's enough interest).

Often though the independents choose to refer to t h e m s e l v e s as a special type of proud independent. I've e v e n seen greek-like sweat shirts with forms of independents written on them. Me, I think I'll just stay a plain independent.

Labeling though often happens in reverse. Many independents like myself h a v e chosen not to rush for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with any dislike of the greek s y s t e m or any fraternity or sorority in particular. But by not rushing, w e are often labeled using stereotypes just a s the greek organizations are. It's a great two-way street that should be repaved.

Not that I've escaped labeling. I get one response from people when they know that I'm no one special and another when I'm introduced a s "that guy who writes those columns in 4 the anchor'." I'm not complaining because it's better than m y label in high school which w a s similar to the fastest smart mouth in the west.

"So what's the point?" you may ask. I don't rightly know, but m a y b e w i t h a l i t t l e awareness of labels w e could avoid them.

Wouldn't w e all rather be known for who w e are everyday rather than what w e do or the letters w e wear on our sweat shirts. I think it would at least be fun to try. Arts Faculty performs Sunday Musicale

by Christine Modey Special to the anchor The first Music Faculty Sunday Musicale of the spring semester took place in Wichers Auditorium at 4 p.m. last Sunday. It was a rare treat for the classical music lover who is looking for quality concerts to attend on campus. Seven full-time and part-time m e m b e r s of the Music Department presented a delightful variety of instrumental and vocal music of the Baroque. Classical and Romantic periods to a near-capacity aud i e n c e of b o t h c o m m u n i t y members and Hope students.

To open the concert, John Gilbert, violinist, and Laurie Loper, pianist, p e r f o r m e d Mozart's Sonata in D Major.

Achieving a nearly f l a w l e s s technical performance, the duo also played the third movement, marked Allegretto, especially well, contrasting light, delicate, dance-like figures with intense, deliberate, martial passages.

The next two pieces, 4i Le Bonheur est chose Legere" by Saint-Saens and t 4 Flammende Rose" by Handel, were performed by the trio of John Gilbert, Joan Conway, pianist, and Laura Floyd, soprano. This is an interesting combination of instruments and voice which w a s used more effectively in the se-

cond piece than in the first.

Floyd's fine soprano voice w a s too often overshadowed by the piano and violin in the Romantic French composition of SaintSaens, but in the " F l a m m e n d e R o s e " it s o a r e d o v e r t h e beautiful, stately, baroque melodies that so characterize Handel.

Stuart Sharp, tenor, and Charles Aschbrenner, pianist, combined to perform five songs of German composer. Johannes Brahms. Sharp's clear tenor seemed perfectly suited to the simple, expressive melodies and Aschbrenner's accompaniment provided sensitive balance to these songs about love and longing.

Robert Ritsema, cellist, and Joan Conway closed the program with Felix Mendelssohn's Sonata in D Major, a delightful piece in four movements made all the better by Ritsema s rich, w a r m tones and Conway's polished, exciting accompaniment. The duo played e x p r e s s i v e l y and enthusiastically; both they and the audience had a splendid time with the composer's challenging and charming composition. Contrasting soaring melodies with rollicking rhythms, Ritsema and Conway brought an afternoon of delightful music to a rousing close.

Mayer lectures on what he does

Bill Mayer of the art department was the featured speaker at the Arts and Humanities Colloquium on January 17. Mayer's topic was "Why I Do What I Do." Mayer, who joined the Hope faculty in 1978, recently had a one-man show in Minneapolis.

Mayer's lecture consisted of slides ranging from projects done in his early childhood to recent works.

The first portion of his lecture, entitled "Spy Stuff," consisted of timebombs and radio sculptures inspired by his intrigue for the television show "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." when he was a child. These sculptures were made from everyday objects such as broken transistor radios and Sucrets boxes.

Even from the beginning, Mayer's works have consisted of taking different parts and putting them together.

Mayer showed slides of some

of his smaller pieces, such a s "Writers B l o c k , " " D i a m o n d Head" and "Measure of a Man." Slides were also shown of s o m e larger works seen around c a m pus: "Big House " and "Bell Washer," which just c a m e back from a show in Washington, D.C.

Mayer also shared some samples of his postcard collection as well as showing slides of some birdhouses he has built.

Mayer finds birdhouses fascinating because they are the only architectural thing we make for a wild animal. Some of Mayer's birdhouses include spaceship houses, decoy birdhouses (complete with shotgun shell perches), a valentine birdhouse and one entitled "First Church of the False Perch," a birdhouse resembling a church that has a false perch and entrance on the opposite side of the sculpture from the real entrance.

From his lecture, students and faculty may still not know why Bill Mayer does what he does, but it he made it quite obvious that he loves what he does.

Liszt expert Campbell to perform at Hope HOPE - Pianist Lawrence Campbell will present a guest recital Saturday, Jan. 28, at 8 p . m . in D i m n e n t M e m o r i a l Chapel at Hope College.

by Liszt, Bartok, and Schubert.

Since 1978 Campbell has been a member of the music faculty at Illinois W e s l e y a n University where he chairs the piano department.

A native of Tennessee, he holds degrees from Northwestern U n i v e r s i t y , f r o m w h i c h he graduated magna cum laude,

and from Indiana University, where he w a s awarded the Doctor of Music d e g r e e in perform a n c e "with highest distinction." Pianists with whom he has studied include Pauline Lindsey, Gyorgy Sebok, Alfonso Montecino, and the late Carlo Zecchi. Another major influence has been Clifford Curzon for whom he played during several months of study in London, England.

Campbell has performed extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. During 1986, the Liszt

centenary year, he presented some 30 recitals devoted exclusively to music of that composer. He w a s featured artist at conventions of the Missouri Music Teachers' Association and the Wisconsin Music Teachers' Assocation.

Campbell has been a winner or finalist in a number of competitions including the Chicago Young Artists' Competition, the Allied Art Piano Competition, the Talman Musical Arts Competition, and the international auditions of the Artists' Advisory Council.

The Toll stuns, yet offers no solutions

by Jim Monnett anchor entertainment editor Society's biggest horrors and hypocrisies are the lyrical topics of the Columbus band, the Toll's new progressive concept album "The P r i c e of Progression." The album is stunning and compelling, but without offering any solutions the listener is left destitute.

The songs deal with contem porary topics like marital rape, insanity, religious hypocrisy and repression, broken homes, loneliness, honor and the true story of Native Americans. Each song is so well written that the listener s heart wants to break, but the Toll offers nothing but pain.

'Reciprocal Images' opens

a circus gone wrong. Only after the song is over does the listener realize that the whole song is a metaphor for society and its conformity. The Toll's power c o m e s from their ability to draw the listener in so that he wants to go back and listen to the song again and again until the puzzle of metaphors and allusions c o m e s together into one picture. Fortunately, the music is well written and played so that it crescendoes with the lyric knives to keep the complex songs interesting.

The second song. "Jonathon T o l e d o . " is the s o n g that demands to be heard. It's over ten minutes long and talks about how the white man has pressed the N a t i v e A m e r i c a n s until "their backs are against the wall." The first line says, "How far has the white man gone - To drive the stake into the g r o u n d 9 "

The stake is holding the Indians down on the reservation. After three v e r s e s Brad Circone, the lead vocalist, starts a narrative that explores the Indians' point of view. Circone speaking in a sardonic tone s a y s at one point "And I bet the reason that they have their backs up against the wall is because they're afraid that we're going to stick another knife in em.

And then they would really have to fall."

Though the album has a lot o( truth in it, it is also quite brutal and graphic. The toughest song to listen to is "Anna-41-Box." It tells of a 41 years old woman trapped by an unloving husband in a box-like marriage. Anna retreats into her mind and her childhood where her life was bet ter Within the song's narrative there is a graphic description of how her husband rapes her. and

Bock-Tobolski tries to "resign the roles given to w o m e n in the Christian tradition ~ like those portraying woman a s either a Madonna or a fleshly sinner.

Bock-Tobolski w a s raised within the Roman Catholic church and t h i s i n f l u e n c e is r e f l e c t e d through the imagery in her work."

M a n y of t h e T h o m p s o n ' s photographs s e e m very disturbing at first glance. However, there is a story behind these p h o t o s of t h e " A d o l e s c e n t Nightmares" series. These photographs represent, in m a n y a s p e c t s , the a n x i e t y that children, especially f e m a l e s , experience as they mature and enter adulthood. The photos are shocking, but truthful.

E v e n with the m a n y differences between t h e s e two artists, there is an e l e m e n t which the two use to bring their work together through a c o m m o n theme. It centers around a searching for women's roles in this day and a g e - it is a struggle of hope and joy.

The Toll is quick to reject Christian religion, and yet they are offering the rebirth of warm weather in it's place. Hardly the answer their c h a r a c t e r s and their listeners are looking for Without any solutions the Toll's concept album, " P r i c e of P r o gression" has a lot to offer in its vivid pictures of society at its worst, but is overall terribly disappointing. Though the Toil promises much in their superb pictures of the dark side of life, they fail in the hard p a r t delivering solutions.

Poet giving Opus reading

by Anne Schloff special to the anchor "Reciprocal I m a g e s " is the title of the newest art exhibit at the Depree Art Center as part of this weeks Women's Week.

This exhibit, put together by the people in Hope's D e P r e e Center, is a first time duo exhibition for painter, Marilyn BockT o b o l s k i and p h o t o g r a p h e r , Karen Thompson, both out of Indiana Purdue University.

Jacqueline Carey, supervisor of this exhibit, discussed the importance of the exhibit in that it speaks of women's role's in contemporary America as it pertains to Christianity. In her work,

The hardest part about all these songs is that the Toll l e a v e s no hope for Anna or for any of the other characters in their songs.

The Toll c o m e s down hard on organized religion by pointing out the stereotypical faults of big churches like the Catholic school system Without any solutions or even alternatives the Toll loses credibility as a socially a w a r e rock group or even as revolutionaries against society.

Sports Dutchmen win in overtime

by Scott A. Kaukonen anchor staff writer On a cooi, sunny Saturday afternoon, most of the people who took a seat the the Civic Center fully expected to relax and watch the Dutchmen cruise to an easy win over the visiting Olivet Comets.

Instead, they encountered a tense battle that found them walking away breathing a sigh of relief. It looked as though the Dutchmen title hopes would receive a surprising blow, but the mystique of the Civic Center and the Hope tradition s e e m e d to e m e r g e from the rafters like a ghost ship and the Comets could only watch their , 4 almost" upset slip away in a 90-87 overtime fog.

For the second consecutive g a m e , the D u t c h m e n found themselves facing a barrage of long-range gunners Olivet connected from downtown 4 times early and held a 16-7 advantage.

The Dutchmen 14 D" tightened up and the offense found their way into the Olivet defense to get back into the game. Keyed by Bruce VanderKolk's 6 free throws the Dutchmen were able to regain the lead.

Hamilton had 17 points in the first half and Hope took a 41-39 lead into the locker room.

Hope looked ready to take charge early in the second half as Greg Mitchell hit 8 consecutive Dutchmen points and Hope led 53-48. But a chill breeze cut through the Civic Center and the Dutchmen went "stone cold," shutout for over five minutes.

Meanwhile, Olivet lit a fire enroute to 17 unanswered points and a 65-53 lead.

Following a timeout, Hope cut the lead to 3 but Olivet responded with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer to move back out to a 72-64 advantage. The Dutchmen reached back, however, and tied it at 72. But Olivet could smell the possible upset and with 40 seconds remaining, they led 81-77, had the ball and the Dutchmen faithful were shaking their heads.

But Olivet's inability to inbound the ball and a missed free throw opened the door for the Dutchmen.

The overtime w a s a second life for the Dutchmen, a "could've been" for Olivet. Eric Elliot continued to e m e r g e as the man-inthe-clutch, hitting a pair of tough shots off the penetration and big rebounds by Tim Van Liere, Tom Livingston and Bart Ver Hulst, capped by a pair of free throws

Elliot led the Dutchmen with 23 points, Mitchell had 20, while Van Liere and Livingston hit for 12 and 10, respectively. Holman led Hope with 8 rebounds.

The Dutchmen will be on the road for the next two weeks b e g i n n i n g W e d n e s d a y with Adrian. The next home g a m e , a guaranteed sell-out, will be with Calvin, Wednesday, Feb. 8.

As the Super Bowl has grown, so has the hype during the week preceding the big g a m e . The fan is subjected to numerous g a m e previews, which basically all say the s a m e thing. Sports writers wish for something newsworthy to happen during this week so they can write about something other than the s a m e old g a m e angles. Well, this year they got their wish, and their reaction could only be described a s tasteless.

A series of riots w a s touched off in Miami's black a r e a s by a shooting with racial implications. The incident is now under review and the riots have since quieted, but through the whole inc i d e n t a11 t h e f h / J v n rt v n sportswriters could LflfZ A C C f k j C a s k is "What about the Super Bowl?'' Instead of being concerned about what w a s going on around them because of this tragic incident, all they cared about w a s the game. Have we forgotten what Martin Luther King taught us already?

After all, behind all its splendor, hype and pagentry, the Media hype Super Bowl is only a football game. It s e e m s to m e that these p e o p l e s t a r t e d rioting o v e r something with just a little more importance than any football game, world championship or not.

Bowl. It's hard to say whether progress is being made in the area of drug abuse in sports.

Stanley Wilson is just the latest case, but it doesn't s e e m to be improving. Last s e m e s t e r I wrote that athletes h a v e to realize that their actions are very visible to the public and that â&#x20AC;˘they must be responsible in their actions. One athlete that had the possibility to be a great influence on y o u n g p e o p l e w a s Roy Tarpley. Tarpley had fought his way back from drugs to become the NBA's best sixth-man last year. Unfortunately, Roy c a m e forward over the holidays saying he had had a relapse and w a s going back into treatment.

I don't want to say that progress isn't being made, because I believe it is. But I think that the problem w a s so much worse than anyone expected that I think it's going to take awhile to find a solution.

It's not like people aren t trying. The NCAA, NEL and NBA all have recently new "gettough" policies in places which seem to be helping. The sports community is helping also. In the past, it w a s too easy to joke about a player with a problem, rather than help him. That s e e m s to be changing, however. Mitch Albom

of the Detroit Free P r e s s was so saddened by the trend of the year that he didn't feel he could write his usual New Year's morning column. That column, which was usually one of Mitch's funniest, would t y p i c a l l y start "GET YOUR FACE OUT OF THE B E A N D I P ! " and go on to joke about s o m e o n e who had had "one too m a n y " the night before.

Albom said he didn't think he could condemn that sort of activity all the other days of the year and joke about it on New Year's.

I believe that this kind of action can only help speed the solution, but inevitably, after all the help from the leagues, newsmen and peers, the decision to use drugs or not rests solely with the player. I'll be here next week In the Crease.

'Accidental

by Diane Tague special to the anchor When a movie makes you laugh, cry, smile, and feel tense, you know it is a winner. Accidental Tourist is a success mainly because of the excellent acting by the trio of William Hurt, Geena D a v i s , and Kathleen Turner.

Describing the plot of Accidental Tourist is both very difficult and very easy. It is based on a novel by Anne Taylor. Director Lawrence Kasdan billiantly transforms this simple story of Macon Leary's life onto the screen. Leary (notice the fitting last name) writes meaningless, monotonous travel books for businessmen who would "rather be in their living room than traveling."

Leary is a man who cut himself off f r o m e v e r y t h i n g and everyone who exists outside his world. Leary lives his life exactly the way he writes about in his travel books. For e x a m p l e , Leary writes "Less is invariably more. Don't take along anything you could lose." Leary keeps himself securely sealed in a box, free from having to let either good or bad feelings in that would cause him to stray from his normal, mundane routine.

Even though Leary's character was extreme, 1 think that there is a bit of him in all of us, a part of ourselves who wants to escape from the trials and

Rounding out the trio of exLeary siblings. As the n a m e sugc e l l e n t a c t i n g is K a t h l e e n gests. the Leary's are suspicious of everyone from outside their own secure world. Even though their life is not really healthy, this interaction provides comic relief. For example, the family a l p h a b e t i z e d their g r o c e r i e s when they put them away, and they never answered the phone Since Macon w a s so cut off, I wondered if he did normal things such as showering, shaving, and grocery shopping.

Even though 1 saw him putting his dirty laundry in a basket, I could not imagine him actually doing it. While writing his travel b o o k s , M a c o n d i n e s at r e s t a u r a n t s and c h e c k s out nightclubs which he reviews, but i just could not get passed thinking of him as a reserved human being.

Offsetting this neatness and order in Macon's life is an eccentric dog trainer named Muriel P r i t c h e t t , p l a y e d by Geena Davis. Tacky is our first impression of Muriel. Her face looks like it used to test varying brands of

Turner. Turner plays Sarah, Macon's wife, who walks out on him because she cannot deal with her son's death and Macon's reluctance to face the world.

Although Turner is not on the screen a lot, a strong actress is needed to play Sarah because she makes such a strong impact in the film. Sarah is not a typical Leary, but she does symbolize stability to Macon. Sarah leaves Macon only to re-enter his life a

year later wanting to try again Macon is quick to return to this safe life with Sarah but soon realizes she has worked out her son's death alone, and he needs Muriel to help him.

The character of Macon is the m o v i e . Without Hurt, there would have been no movie. Hurt, as he typically does, executes his part beautifully. I felt priviledg ed and treated to watch Hurt play this challenging role.
