Brown takes 'anchor'helm The Student Communications Media Committee has appointed Peter Brown as editor of the anchor for the second semester of the 1972-73 year. Brown, a junior pohtical science major f r o m Somerville, New Jersey, replaces Jvlary Houting who resigned last month.

Brown's previous experience on the paper includes a stint as a reporter on the paper during his freshman year and as a political columnist during the first semester of this year.

Other members of the editorial staff are Dave DeKok, Paul Timmer, Dirk Bloemendaal, Margie DeKam, and Gary Gray. DeKok, a sophomore political science major from Holland, Michigan, will be the new associate editor.

Timmer and Bloemendaal, both freshmen, are news and copy editors^respectively. Gray and Ms. DeKam will serve as editorial assistants.

Commenting on the new staff.

Brown said, "while inexperience is

the biggest problem, next to salaries, with the aid of the previous editors on the first issue the anchor will maintain its high level of journalism."

The new editor also stated that "many students are showing an interest in joining the staff, and we are continually expanding."

"THOSE WERE THE DAYS" is the theme of this year's Winter Carnival, scheduled by the Student Activities Committee (SAC) to run next week.

Highlight of the week's festivities will be an all campus party Friday night, at the DeWitt Cultural Center complete with a mobster-run speakeasy and 5^ malts. Booths sponsored by campus organizations will transform the Kletz area into a 1950 State Fair grounds.

THE CENTER ballroom will be the scene of a dance contest for those twisters and jitterbuggers in the crowd. Admission is $1 or a costume from the '20's, ^O's, MO's, or 'SO's. Those late night owls still around at 2 a.m. after the dance can obtain breakfast in the Kletz with their ID's or 25tf.

Preceding the dance is a Volkswagon race from the Health Center to the DCC. A $25 gift certificate f r o m Skiles will be awarded to the fastest-pushing team. To enter, teams should call Molly Gates, Bill Whitlock, or George Happe.

THE WEEK'S activities kick off Monday with the beginning of

the snow sculpture competition, open to all residence halls and organizations.

Those desiring more information should contact Chairmen Mike Carpenter or Bill Whitlock.

Also starting Monday is a week-long broomball tournament for both men and women. Participating teams should contact either Jim McFarlin or Duncan Crandall.

CAROUSEL MOUNTAIN Ski Resort will host Wednesday's ski events which range in variety from a dual slalom race to a tray race for professors. J u n e will be busting out early in t h e bikini ski race.

Prizes feature a season's pass at Carousel for the winner of the dual slalom and a gift certificate from an area ski shop for the runner-up. The winner of the silly slalom will receive a pizza and a pitcher of beer from Skiles. T o enter an event interested skiers should contact either Tom Hutchings or Mike Bueter.

FOR THOSE who can never get enough dessert, there is a pie-eating contest Thursday evening at 10 in Phelps dining hall.

Saturday afternoon broomball play-offs will top the week's activities, followed by a special serenaded dinner at Saga.

Decision by Supreme Court allows abortion to 6 mos.

While officials for Grand Rapids Planned Parenthood were laying groundwork for an abortion clinic, Governor Milliken announced Wednesday that Michigan's old abortion law is technically still in effect until Feb. 16.

Milliken also warned that doctors who perform abortions may be subject to prosecution.

The Governor said, " I t is my understanding . . . that the current law is still operative within 25 days after the Supreme Court decision was handed d o w n . " Monday's landmark decision by the Court held that women have the right to secure an abortion for

medical reasons during the first six months of pregnancy. The vote by the Court was seven to two.

Frederick S. Burd, Director of Holland City Hospital, told the anchor that Holland Hospital is "doing nothing with regards to the recent Court decision." He stated that they are awaiting word from the State Board of Health.

Dr. Riezen, Director of the State Board of Health, summed it all up by saying; "The whole abortion issue in Michigan is in a legal limbo now, but it is certain that the Michigan abortion law as it reads now will not stay in effect."

Jose Ferrer to direct 'Cyrano de Bergerac' here

by Paul Timmer Three giants in the field of theater and film have arrived on Hope's campus to help mount the upcoming production of Cyrano de Bergerac.

HIGHLY-ACCLAIMED actordirector Jose Ferrer and awardwinning songwriters George Forrest and Robert Wright will be collaborating on an original musical version of Edmond Rostand's 19th century romantic drama to be presented here March 1-10.

The three artists had been working on a new production for several years and were nearing completion when Assistant Professor of Theater Donald Finn contacted Ferrer about playing the role of Cyrano as part of Hope's artist-in-residence program.

F E R R E R EXPRESSED interest in the production but declined to accept an acting part. "We invited Mr. Ferrer to Holland t o

discuss the possibility of his directing an original production," Finn stated. " A f t e r several trips to Hope, including a visit from Mr. Wright and Mr. Forrest, the new version of Cyrano was agreed to be undertaken h e w , " Finn continued.

Before he had talked to Ferrer, Finn had a professional actor lined up to play the lead role. He cancelled and with no one to play Cyrano and rehearsals scheduled to begin after Christmas vacation, the outlook for the production was bleak.

THEN, AS SOME of the theater faculty were relaxing at a local establishment discussing what to do next, someone suggested, "Why not go to the t o p ? " "When people think of Cyrano, Jose Ferrer immediately comes to mind," Finn said. Indeed, Ferrer received a Tony award for his performance of the role on Broadway and an Oscar for the film version. He has also starred in

such noted movies as The Caine Mutiny, Lawrence of Arabia and Ship of Fools.

His directing credits include the Tony awardwinning plays Stalag 17 and The Shrike.

COMPOSERS WRIGHT and Forrest have won, among other awards, a Tony for their music and lyrics in Kismet, and were nominated for an Oscar for the song ''Donkey Serenade" from The Firefly. They also wrote the music for the recent film Song of Norway.

The timing of Finn's contact with Ferrer was perfect, since Wright, Forrest, and Ferrer were

looking for a place to stage their new production. "The three were sufficiently impressed with our theater facilities and the cooperation between the music and theater departments," Finn said.

THE PRODUCTION will combine the talents of the music and theater departments. Associate Professor of Music Robert Cecil will conduct a 14-piece orchestra, and the Wright-Forrest score is being arranged for orchestra by Assistant Professor of Music Roger Davis.

major roles of Cyrano, Roxanna, and Christian. Hope's philosophy of involving professionals in its theater productions was stated by Finn: "Many people don't get an opportunity to work with professionals in their college experience.

Sex seminar, The Human Experience, begins Sun. The Association of Women Students begins its second colloquium for the discussion of human sexuality Sunday night.

The four-part series is loosely titled The Human Experience . . . with each presentation taking a specific focus at one aspect of what it means to be a human, sexual being interacting with other human, sexual beings. The series is planned for Jan. 28, 29, 31, and Feb. 1.

THE F I R S T PROGRAM features the film "Diary of a Mad Housewife."

It will serve as a basis for discussion of the male and female roles and their relationships in m o d e m America. The film begins at 7 p.m. in the DeWitt theater and will be followed by discussion and refreshments in the faculty lounge upstairs. Admission to the film is $ .50.

Anti-war activist Pontier freed from federal mison Glenn Pontier, a Hope graduate who last fall staged an extended water fast at the Federal Correctional Institute at Danbury, Connecticut, was released f r o m prison last Monday, according to his father. Rev. Raymond J. Pontier.

Pontier was arrested for evading the draft after refusing on moral grounds to obtain a conscientious objector deferment in 1971 while a student at the New Brunswick Seminary in New Jersey. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced to a year m federal prison in March 1972. Pontier spent a total of 10 m o n t h s in federal prisons at Danbury, Springfield, Missouri, and Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

Rev. Raymond Pontier, the anti-war activist's father, expressed thanks on behalf of his son to the many people who responded t o the protest and pledged their support. He expressed his feelings by saying, " I t is now the Year of our Lord 1973. The War goes on, the terror of bombing intensifies, the toll of dead and wounded mounts, the devastation is increased, and we dwell in the midst of continuing deception and oppression. Till peace and j u s t i c e the struggle."

Several o t h e r resource people will be available for discussion, showing films and displays. Dr. Kenneth VanderKolk, a gynecologist and obstetrician f r o m Grand Rapids, will discuss birth control.

"Sex is never an emergency," explains Dr. Elaine C. Pierson in her book Sex Is Never An Emergency, a candid guide for college students. Copies of her book will be given t o those attending Monday night's program. Additional copies will be available Wednesday and Thursday f o r $ .50 each.

Hope students are now one step closer to an extension in parietals following action by the Student Conduct Committee at its meeting Wednesday. T h e proposal must now be passed by the Campus Life Board before it can take effect.

THE PROPOSAL sent to the CLB is a revision of the one originally submitted by Student Congress. Under the terms of the revised proposal, parietal hours would be f r o m 1 to 11 p.m. on Sundays, 7 to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, and 1 p.m. to 1 a.m.

There was some criticism of the poll taken by Student Congress to determine student attitudes on drinking and parietals.

Gifts from Gregorys

Hope receives $500,000 Spring Lake land tract A gift of 89 acres of property along Spring Lake in Ottawa and Muskegon counties has been given to the college by Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Gregory, long-time summer residents of the area.

THE WOODED TRACT, located in Spring Lake and Fruitport townships, includes approximately 4,000 feet of lakefront property on Spring Lake. The property has been valued at more than $500,000, according to college officials.

The- gift was presented to President Gordon J. Van Wylen and Board of Trustees Chairman Hugh DePree. ktl have thoroughly enjoyed the many meetings we have had with Mrs. Gregory," DePree remarked, "and I hope both he and his wife will increasingly have a vital interest in the mission and activities of Hope."

"WE ARE MOST grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Gregory for this generous gift," said President Van Wylen. "Their interest and enthusiasm for Hope College is a source of encouragement for all of us. We will use this gift as wisely as we can to ensure the continued strength of Hope."

IN THE MID 1920^ the property was given prime consideration by President Coolidge as the site of his summer White House. It was also frequently visited by U.S. Vice President and Mrs. Adlai E. Stevenson between 1893-97.

Mr. and Mrs. Gregory have been interested in the college for a number of years and were close personal friends of former President Calvin Vander Werf and his wife, Rachel. College officials said they plan to sell the property, with the proceeds going toward the Build Hope fund.

DON STOLTZ, member of the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners, told the anchor that the Board is considering the property as a possible site for a recreational park. Stoltz said that the Board was going to engage the services of a specialist in outdoor recreation from Michigan State University to advise them as to the feasibility of creating a recreational area out of the estate.

If the site is deemed desirable, the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners, along with other interested parties, will eventually bid on the estate. Stoltz stated that the land along Spring Lake is

rare and eagerly sought after by housing developers. Officials at Hope said that they have not yet received any offers to buy the estate.

Auditing cost reduced for students, others Dean for Academic Affairs Morrette Rider announced recently that members of the Hope and Holland communities will now be able to audit courses at a cost of $25 per credit hour, reduced from the normal fee of $67.

RIDER SAID that students at Hope may choose to supplement their schedule of credit courses with those audit courses wnich would be "taken merely for the enjoyment and pleasure of learning about a specific topic which the student might not have room for in his regular schedule."

Previously, fees for audit and credit courses were identical, $67 per credit hour. Registrar Jon Huisken described this as an impracticality: "Students did not elect audit courses as long as the fee charged was the same as for a credit course."

"MEMBERS OF the Holland community who might have taken classes here at Hope for their own self-worth were also slow in their response because of the high cost per credit h o u r , " Huisken added.

"In order to alleviate this, we have lowered the fixed f a c t o r - t h e cost."

This fee would apply to full time students registering for a course on an audit basis above their normal full time load and to all part time students.

REGISTRATION of any student auditing a course will take place following the normal regis-

tration for that semester and will be accepted on a space-available basis only. No student may register for a course on the audit basis after the first two weeks of a semester.

Since this is the first semester the lower rates will be implemented, however, the deadline has been extended to Jan. 30. A student registering to audit a course may not request credit for the course after that time.

THE EXTENT to which an auditing student may participate in a course is left to the discretion of the faculty member teaching the course. Normally, the student is not permitted to take tests, write term papers, or participate in other projects which would require an extensive amount of faculty time.

He is an observer in the course, and is permitted to participate in discussions within scheduled class time.

STUDENTS WILL not be accepted on an audit basis in laboratory courses, applied music, studio art and other courses for which a laboratory fee is normally charged.

Rider summed up the situation: "There exists within this plan a potential to provide continuing adult education at no cost to the college, and no additional effort to the faculty, and at the same time, to provide a small amount of additional revenue to the college budgets."

Double jeopardy Now that the war is finally ending, two prevalent American moods have emerged: confusion and frustration.

The confusion comes from the years of the conflicting stories of administration and press, while the frustration is a result of fruitless protest by activist demonstrators.

Both confusion and frustration have produced apathy. Americans don't know who or what to believe, and those that have been able to form an opinion, can't seem to accomplish anything.

The debilitating war has done more than fill countless graveyards.

It has damaged the spirit of the young, and' caused massive distrust of the expanding executive branch.

Americans have become apathetic to death and destruction. Through

the many years of the war, the public was told that South Vietnam must be allowed the right of selfdetermination. Tuesday night when Nixon announced the peace agreement, the very future of South Vietnam as a non-communist regime remained in doubt.

"Peace with honor and not with surrender," Nixon has exclaimed.

But with hundreds of thousands killed, Vietnam bombed nearly to ruins and the very humanity of Americans undermined, it is perverted to refer to the end of the war as honorable.

Nixon may not have "surrendered" to the North Vietnamese but he has surrendered to a dogma, and the American people are, in reality, the losers.

Tommy': new look at Townshend's pinball wizard This week's review is written by anchor music critic G.M. Thompson, Jr. He reviews the new version of Tommy done by the London Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir with guest soloists Peter Townshend, Sandy Denny, Graham Bell, Steve Winwood, Maggie Bell, Richie Havens, Merry Clayton, Roger Daltry, John Entwistle, Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart and Richard Harris.

At t h e end of World War I, a w o m a n b y t h e n a m e of Walker gave b i r t h t o a baby b o y . The b o y ' s f a t h e r was missing in action; presumed dead. Ten years later Captain Walker returned h o m e , only t o find his wife in t h e arms of another man.

WHILE LOOKING in a mirror, the y o u n g b o y saw his f a t h e r kill his m o t h e r ' s lover. T h e sight of the murder and his parents insistence t h a t h e tell n o one drives t h e boy t o a state of being deaf,

d u m b , and blind. F r o m this account comes the story for " T o m m y , " the rock opera by the Who. The original version of " T o m m y " was released in 1969, a landmark f o r its creator, Peter T o w n s h e n d , for the Who, and f o r all of rock music. N o w there is a new " T o m m y " . On Ode records, t h e new " T o m m y " differs f r o m the original's hard rock in that the new recording features the Lond o n S y m p h o n y Orchestra and Chamber Choir with guest soloists. Suddenly it becomes a real opera, an intense dramatic work and a t r i u m p h all over again.

THE F I R S T most people knew of the new version was when Rod Stewart's p e r f o r m a n c e of "Pinball Wizard" was released as a single. It seemed overly orchestrated and lacking the excitement and drive

The article examines the stereotypes-chiefly negative-of t h e Arab peoples of t h e Middle Eastern countries, embodied in t h e works of English and American fiction writers, travellers, and scholars of t h e nineteenth century.

Hollenbach is currently on sabbatical leave t o continue his research on a larger s t u d y of which t h e "Muslim World" article is a part. He leaves for L o n d o n ,

His interest in t h e Middle East has been generated primarily by the three years he and his family spent there as teacher and administrator at the American Universities of Cairo ( 1 9 5 5 - 5 7 ) and Beirut (1965-66). Hollenbach is on the Middle East advisory committee of the Great Lakes Colleges Association and in recent years has been active in national programs of the Middle East Studies Association.

Listening t o the album one realizes that t h e weakness is n o t in Stewart's performance but in the fact that he is forced to stand alone. The songs and performances are woven into such a tight theatrical piece that t o take one song out is to shatter the strength of b o t h the opera and the song.

T h e only cuts that could possibly survive as singles are Richie Havens (as t h e Hawker) doing "Eyesight T o T h e Blind", Merry Clayton (the G y p s y ) with " T h e Acid Q u e e n " and maybe Peter To w n s h e n d ' s (the Narrator) "Amazing J o u r n e y . " O N E THING that helps the dramatic aspect of the new version is the fact that each part is sung by a different voice as opposed t o the f o u r members of the Who taking all the parts in the original. The cast is impressive and is, in order of appearance: Peter Townshend (Narrator), Sandy Denny (Nurse), Graham Bell

Due t o the demise of Van Raalte Hall, classes are being held in bizarre and unsuitable places. T h e gurgling of overhead pipes in basement classrooms are more distracting than those falling bricks at Van Raalte ever were. T h e new makeshift classrooms certainly w o n ' t impress prospective new freshmen on campus t o u r s either.

THE REHABFTATION of Van Raalte Hall may be an i m p r o v e m e n t . T h e danger of occupying the condemned building could be minimized by scheduling crumble drills. Crumble drills resemble fire or air raid drills and would prepare students and faculty f o r t h e u n e x p e c t e d .

Ringo Starr hardly achieves a vocal victory, but firmly establishes the image of Uncle Ernie as a grubby old pervert. Roger Daltry has been T o m m y since the part was born.

HIS P E R F O R M A N C E on the original and following concert performances " . . . turned Roger into much more of the kind of person he needs to be on stage; it gave him something more to get i n t o - i t gave him a part, an identity. It really solidified him within the Who and it challenged him t o sing well, as well," says Peter Townshend.

Included in the album is a full color booklet that includes the complete lyrics and illustrations by noted pop artists, like David Edward Byrd, characterizing the soloists in their roles. T h e album design centers around the pinball and pinball machine.

Peter Townshend is one of the greatest creators and artists that rock will ever see. He has not only created this masterful work, but has now re-created it t o achieve an even greater mastery. T h e t w o versions of " T o m m y " are completely different, the first being almost perfect rock the second establishing the rock opera as a serious, dramatic and powerful musical media. Music owes a lot to Peter Townshend and to " T o m m y " . " T h a t deaf, d u m b , and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball."

'Civilisation series to continue Monday The art of 17th century Holland will be the subject of the eighth Civilization series film to be shown Monday at 4 : 3 0 and 7 : 3 0 p.m. and Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium.

The paintings of Hals, Vermeer, de Hooch, Saenredam and Rembrandt, advances in mathematics and science, and the search for light and t r u t h are all woven together in a presentation entitled " T h e Light of Experience," which stresses what amounts to an age's obsession with light.

AdAB pushes shortening of fall, semester breaks

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and receive input on the proposed college calendar for 1973-74. Most of the discussion dealt with the question of fall

recess. It was believed by many of those present that if two breaks are given in the first semester, one reasonably long and the other short, those students living a great distance from Holland are presented with transportation problems.

ALSO, HAVING the semester broken into two blocks prevents continuity in class sessions and adds to teaching difficulties. Furthermore, class attendance usually drops before each break.

Morrette Rider presented the proposed calendar changes. He stated, "I had to consider the question, 'Can we start classes after Labor Day, or can we take off on this day?' " Rider told the Board that the required number of class days can not be met if classes are not held on Sept. 5. enour A recently published book of essays honoring James Leon Kelso, well known Biblical archaeologist, was conceived, compiled and edited by Dr. Robert A. Coughenour, associate professor of religion.

The volume, " F o r Me to Live," was recently presented to Kelso on his 80th birthday.

Kelso was Professor of Old Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He was a writer for many years of Biblical and archaeological articles for the Sunday School Guide. He also gave special lectures at Western Theological Seminary in the late 1940^.

The book attempts to disclose something of the breadth and depth of Kelso's life work and influence through original essays

of his students, according to Coughenour. In addition, the essays are contributions to the academic fields of the professors and churchmen who authored them.

The book has three major sections: Biblical Studies and Biblical Archaeology, Theology and Ethics and Church and Ministry. All three sections are introduced by Coughenour. The 14 essays of the volume were written by prominent evangelical Christian scholars who were students of Kelso.

Among them are William H. Brownlee, one of the first men to work on the Dead Sea Scrolls; John A. Thompson of the American Bible Society; Addison H. Leitch, columnist for Christianity Today; Theophilus M. Taylor,

Holmes leaves for Colorado, GVSC professor to fill in Dr. Jack Holmes, assistant professor of political science, has been granted a six month leave of absence in order to head U.S. Representative Donald Brotzman's Colorado office.

Brotzman, a Republican representing Colorado's Second Congressional District, has indicated that the Hope professor will be involved with constituency affairs and problems.

Holmes, who recently received his doctorate from the University of Denver, has been a member of the Hope faculty since 1969. Due to the suddenness of Holmes' departure. Dr. James Zoeteway, chairman of the political science department, has recently engaged the services of Grand Valley State College professor William Thompson to teach international relations.

Zoeteway has also increased the course load for the other departmental professors.

and students last week before his departure. At the party he expressed his desire to return to Hope sometime in the future.

Because instructors must meet for all classes, there will be less temptation for instructors to finish early," he added.

Following Schmidt's proposal Gary Demarest III, Director of the Counseling Center, suggested that spring recess begin Friday, March 8, as opposed to March 21.

HE STATED, "A vacation around this time is needed because of the long duration of classes from Jan. 9 to March 21.

From experience, I've found that this is the most depressing time for students." If this proposal is implemented only two days vacation will be given at Easter.

As the calendar now stands, the six week session is scheduled for June 25 through August 3. The first three week session will be held from June 25 to July 13 plus a Saturday, the second from July 16 to August 3 and the third from August 6 to August 24. The eight week foreign language session has been dropped.

A FINAL exam week proposal was made by Assistant Professor of Physics Dr. Chris Schmidt. He suggested to the board that final exams be held during the last three class days.

Hope cage team finishes 1-2 in GLCA Classic

by Dirk Bloemendaal* Hope College's y o u n g basketball team does not lack in flavor this winter, but the flamboyance and color that radiates f r o m Coach Russ DeVette's squad cannot make up for the experience that just isn't there.

THAT FACT was sorely evident as the Flying Dutchmen hosted Oberlin, Ohio Wesleyan, Wabash, DePauw, and Kalamazoo in the Great Lakes College Association Classic during Christmas vacation, a tournament in which the Dutch barely escaped with

their lives, eking one win out of the three-day tourney.

T h e first night, Hope played the role of t h e congenial host, bowing t o Oberlin College of Ohio, 86-75. Oberlin shot a peppery 53 percent in leading Hope the entire game. T h e Yeomen, coached by former Olympic 220-yard dash gold medalist Tommie Smith, sank 39 of 71 att e m p t s in the contest.

The score at the end of regular play was 57-all, after being tied 11 times in the first half and eight times in the second.

by Merlin Whiteman Tommie Smith is living proof that fame, or more applicable in his case, notoriety, is fleeting.

By the time the Mexico City Olympics of 1968 had elapsed, most Americans could tell you that Smith and friend John Carlos were the two black athletes who bared black socks, bowed their heads, and shoved black-gloved fists into the air on the 2 2 0 yard victory stand.

HOWEVER, ONLY a sports fanatic would know that after he gave up track. Smith languished for a couple of years in pro-football; he had the speed, but was hampered by injuries and paddlehands. And if you knew that he is presently head basketball and track coach at Oberlin College, you are either a trivia nut, or were present at the GLCA Basketball Classic held in Holland over the holidays.

Smith was born in Acworth, Texas on D-Day, 1944, but spent his early years in California. He graduated from Lemoore High School and entered San Jose State on a basketball scholarship. In addition to setting world track records while at SJS, he was also a member of the Blue Key honorary society. He is presently completing his master's degree in social sciences at Harvard.

ON THE A F T E R N O O N of the second round of the tournament, 1 talked with Smith after his team had finished practice. T h e night before, his Yeomen had defeated a flat Dutch team, 86-75.

What about Mexico City and your clenched-fist protest? "It was something people didn't have t o approve, because it was right. The act was more an athletic protest than anything else. Black athletes were being used; also it was against the professionalism that had prevaded the Olympics."

HAVE THINGS CHANGED much since 1968?

"There has been progress, things have gone forward, but this doesn't mean progress should rest or that it is finished."

What about the f u t u r e of the black movement in America? "There'isn't just one means and one end.

Everybody has their own way of looking at equality. In the past, whites have set the pace. Today, a lot of blacks look at whites like whites looked at them in the past." " T h a t part of the brain which is oriented toward help has been so trampled that they reject whites.

When whites tell me they understand, I k n o w they probably d o n ' t . I dislike whites as a race, the color, but n o t necessarily individuals."

SHOULD THE OLYMPICS be a political f o r u m and what is its future? " I d o n ' t like to predict about myself or anything else. There will be a greater awareness about its problems. It shouldn't be a political f o r u m , but the Olympics have been injected with poison-professionalism. The Olympic officials and promoters w h o have the money are at fault. It has been a conglomeration since the Olympics started."

When 1 learned that T o m m i e Smith was coaching basketball, I was rather surprised. However, he did attend SJS on a basketball grant-in-aid and was the leading rebounder on ; tl)e freshman team even though he stood but 6'2 . He didn't go out his s o p h o m o r e year because the coach " s t i f l e d " his style of play.

WHY A R E N T T H E R E m o r e black basketball coaches? " Y o u d o n ' t find m a n y athletic directors like Jack Scott. People feel the younger the coach, or the more hair he has on his face, the more problems you'll have. And if there are blacks on the team, people feel this will create more problems." " T h e r e probably are several black coaches, but you d o n ' t hear much about t h e m because they are 4 just coaches.' I d o n ' t want t o be just a coach. You can build a robot to coach a player; I want t o be able t o talk t o h i m . " WHAT WAS YOUR G R E A T E S T thrill as a world-class runner? " I t wasn't necessarily the Olympics. My greatest accomplishment was the 19.5 on a 220 straightaway, not my 1 9 . ^ on a curve."

What about the proposed new pro track circuit? " T h e y sent me a standard contract, but it wasn't enough money. They would be using m y b o d y , so why be modest. I k n o w I'm one of the world's best, and I want that kind of m o n e y . " SMITH EXPRESSED HIS opinion about several f a m o u s people: HOWARD COSELL—"Howard's my man. He's okay."

In other action, DePauw stopped Ohio Wesleyan cold, downing the Battling Bishops, 76-57. Gary Pittenger scored 19 points for DePauw while Eric Morris and Jay Baksa led Wesleyan with 10 apiece.

KALAMAZOO bolstered some faltering MIAA prestige by trimming Oberlin, 69-68. Standout center Jim Van Sweden paced the Hornets with 28 points while steady forward Jed Margolis collected 2 3 f o r the Y e o m e n .

Kalamazoo, Ohio Wesleyan, and DePauw finished the GLCA with 2-1 records and Oberlin, Hope, and Wabash ended with opposite records of 1-2.

Dutch dealt league loss, Olivet tops MIAA race

O L I V E T ' S tenacious 2-3 zone defense forced Hope t o take quick shots and caused 17 turnovers.

Coach DeVette's squad failed t o stop Olivet's excellent fast break which gave t h e winners ample o p p o r t u n i t y t o score.

Hope's leading scorer, Lee Brandsma, was held scoreless in the first half by Olivet's fast double-teaming defense. T o m Wolters picked up the slack b y scoring 14 points in t h e first half.

WITH 13:37 to go in the game Brandsma scored hisfirstfield goal and continued t o score, finishing t h e game with the team high 16 points.

Olivet lived up to their reputation as a fine foul shooting team as they connected on better than 90 percent f r o m t h e line. T h e Comets were 10-for-10 f r o m t h e charity line in the first half.

WALKER, Olivet's fine forward, was the leading scorer with 21 popjjs. John Namath, the starting 6 8 center for Olivet scored 15 points.

BRIAN VRIESMAN, H o p e ' s talented sophomore forward, played an excellent game f o r t h e D u t c h , scoring 11 of his 14 p o i n t s in t h e second half and o u t rebounding a m u c h taller-Olivet front line.

In their MIAA opener, H o p e floored Kalamazoo College, 79-61, in what one of H o p e ' s all-time greats. Bob Ritsema, ' 5 8 , described as being the best game Hope has played in five years.
