Former Mayor Byrne Strayed,but Captivated the Audience Tuesday morning keynote speaker Jane Byrne commenced Hope College's W o m e n ' s Week with her speech entitled " W o m e n and E x c e l l e n c e . " Students, faculty, and visitors crowed into the Dewitt T h e a t r e w e l c o m i n g the f o r m e r M a y o r of Chicago. A f t e r a short b i o g r a p h i c a l introduction, Ms. B y r n e a p p r o a c h ed the podium to the e x p e c t a n t a p p l a u s e of the a u d i e n c e . She began her s p e e c h by a d d r e s s i n g the w o m e n in the g r o u p solemnly urging their i n c r e a s e d involvem e n t in the a f f a i r s of our nation. ' T h e r e is a n e e d for w o m e n to b e c o m e m o r e heavily involved in life about t h e m in its t o t a l i t y . " she s t a t e d . " W e m u s t r e a l i z e our abilities and t h a t which we h a v e

to offer to our society." "The roles of women have been projected and filled for many years without question.," she continued. "We were just 'go along' people. Many of you students are too y o u n g to r e m e m b e r the changes that have taken place," she alleged a s s h e p r o v i d e d a h i s t o r i c a l d i s c r i p t i o n of t h e challenges, confrontations, and disruption our nation has undergone during the past

K e n n e d y , s h e s t a t e d t h a t women have emerged from that e r a m o r e a w a r e of t h e m s e l v e s a s individuals but still u n s u r e of their roles as w o m e n in our societyThis e n e r g e t i c w o m a n p r o v k e d nods and m u r m u r s oi a p p r e c i a tion as she d e s c r i b e d her own initiation into politics; her exp e r i e n c e s a s a m e m b e r of the Kennedy A d m i n i s t r a t i o n and aid to the l a t e R i c h a r d Daly, f o r m e r m a y o r of Chicago. Quoting this p o w e r f u l and well-respected city l e a d e r , Ms. B y r n e spoke of a d a y in 1970, a y e a r w h e n g a n g s a n d riots p l a g u e d t h e city of Chicago, when Daly c o n f r o n t e d his a i d e s with the q u e s t i o n : " W h e r e a r e the w o m e n ? M a y b e I ' m oldf a s h i o n e d , " h e s a i d , but m y m o t h e r a n d p e o p l e of t h a t g e n e r a t i o n t r u l y believed t h a t t h e h a n d t h a t r o c k s the c r a d l e truly rules the world." Stressing t h e s i g n i f i c a n c e of this s t a t e ment, Ms. B y r n e continued urging action. T h e College Board of T r u s t e e s at its w i n t e r m e e t i n g which concluded F r i d a y , J a n u a r y 31. approved a s t a t e m e n t d e s c r i b i n g the opening for the p r e s i d e n c y of the college and authorized the P r e s i d e n t i a l Search C o m m i t t e e to proceed in active soliciatation of qualified c a n d i d a t e s . Dr. G o r d o n J . Van Wylen, who h a s s e r v e d a s the college's ninth p r e s i d e n t since 1972, plans to r e t i r e at t h e end of the 1986-87 acedemic year. The s e a r c h c o m m i t t e e of nine p e r s o n s r e p r e s e n t i n g the b o a r d of t r u s t e e s , the a d m i n i s t r a t i v e s t a f f , the faculty, the a l u m n U a e ) , and the s t u d e n t body h a s concluded its p r e l i m i n a r y t a s k s of o r g a n i z i n g the p a t t e r n of t h e s e a r c h a n d p r e p a r i n g a descript i o n of t h e p o s i t i o n w i t h b a c k g r o u n d m a t e r i a l s for B o a r d action. After a n a l y s i s of the key f a c i n g the college in the next d e c a d e , the following q u a l i f i c a t i o n s for the presidency emerged: strong a c a d e m i c c r e d e n t i a l s , including an e a r n e d d o c t o r a t e ; a distinguished record of achievem e n t , p r e f e r a b l y in h i g h e r e d u c a t i o n ; c o m m i t t m e n t to t h e Lordship of Christ; c o m m i t t m e n t to u n d e r g r a d u a t e liberal a r t s e d u c a t i o n in a C h r i s t i a n con-

text; demonstrated adm i n i s t r a t i v e ability, p r e f e r a b l y in h i g h e r e d u c a t i o n ; ability to r e l a t e to the college's d i v e r s e constituencies, including the R e f o r m e d Church in A m e r i c a ; financial insights; and l e a d e r ship abilities to a r t i c u l a t e and i m p l e m e n t effectively the mission of t h e College. T h e deadline for r e c e i p t of applications is August 1.
