Former Mayor Byrne Strayed,but Captivated the Audience Tuesday morning keynote speaker Jane Byrne commenced Hope College's W o m e n ' s Week with her speech entitled " W o m e n and E x c e l l e n c e . " Students, faculty, and visitors crowed into the Dewitt T h e a t r e w e l c o m i n g the f o r m e r M a y o r of Chicago.

A f t e r a short b i o g r a p h i c a l introduction, Ms. B y r n e a p p r o a c h ed the podium to the e x p e c t a n t a p p l a u s e of the a u d i e n c e . She began her s p e e c h by a d d r e s s i n g the w o m e n in the g r o u p solemnly urging their i n c r e a s e d involvem e n t in the a f f a i r s of our nation. ' T h e r e is a n e e d for w o m e n to b e c o m e m o r e heavily involved in life about t h e m in its t o t a l i t y . " she s t a t e d . " W e m u s t r e a l i z e our abilities and t h a t which we h a v e

to offer to our society." "The roles of women have been projected and filled for many years without question.," she continued. "We were just 'go along' people. Many of you students are too y o u n g to r e m e m b e r the changes that have taken place," she alleged a s s h e p r o v i d e d a h i s t o r i c a l d i s c r i p t i o n of t h e challenges, confrontations, and disruption our nation has undergone during the past

Quoting this p o w e r f u l and well-respected city l e a d e r , Ms. B y r n e spoke of a d a y in 1970, a y e a r w h e n g a n g s a n d riots p l a g u e d t h e city of Chicago, when Daly c o n f r o n t e d his a i d e s with the q u e s t i o n : " W h e r e a r e the w o m e n ? M a y b e I ' m oldf a s h i o n e d , " h e s a i d , but m y m o t h e r a n d p e o p l e of t h a t g e n e r a t i o n t r u l y believed t h a t t h e h a n d t h a t r o c k s the c r a d l e truly rules the world." T h e College Board of T r u s t e e s at its w i n t e r m e e t i n g which concluded F r i d a y , J a n u a r y 31. approved a s t a t e m e n t d e s c r i b i n g the opening for the p r e s i d e n c y of the college and authorized the P r e s i d e n t i a l Search C o m m i t t e e to proceed in active soliciatation of qualified c a n d i d a t e s .

Dr. G o r d o n J . Van Wylen, who h a s s e r v e d a s the college's ninth p r e s i d e n t since 1972, plans to r e t i r e at t h e end of the 1986-87 acedemic year.

Cosmos Get More Flak From Faculty end Students Over Rush Poster Dear Mr. VerBeek: I a m writing w i t h r e g a r d to y o u r r e s p o n s e to c o m m e n t s m a d e by f a c u l t y a n d s t u d e n t s about y o u r R u s h p r o g r a m promotion poster. As I a m s u r e you a r e a w a r e , I w a s one of t h e f a c u l ty who found y o u r p o s t e r offensive.

I a p p r e c i a t e a good joke a n d I a p p r e c i a t e y o u r i n t e s t i n a l fortitude a n d c o u r a g e f o r being a b l e to tell a good joke. I h a v e e v e n been known to s m i l e o n c e in a while. Additionally, v i n d i c t i v e a s I a m , even I w a s a b l e to d e d u c e the association b e t w e e n y o u r f r a t e r n i t y a n d t h e COSMOPOLITAN m a g a z i n e . I understand that Chrysler, Virginia Slims, a n d P e p s i et al. u s e s i m i l a r t y p e s of i m a g e s in their a d v e r t i s i n g c a m p a i g n . I also a g r e e with you t h a t ( y o u r l a n g u a g e on t h e p o s t e r a s i d e ) you did nothing m o r e or less t h a n one of t h e a b o v e n a m e d o r g a n i z a tions.

Now t h a t w e h a v e c o m e to t e r m s of a g r e e m e n t , I feel it n e c e s s a r y to i n d i c a t e w h e r e w e do not a g r e e . " It is v e r y i n t e r e s t i n g to note that an almost exact quotation w a s m a d e by one of t h e c e n t r a l f i g u r e s in the m o v i e " N o t a L o v e S t o r y . Last week's editorial on the divestment controversy at Hope has caused some problems through a misstatement of fact. Bishop Tutu has said that divestment is the last peaceful means of eliminating apartheid before revolution, not that divestment was a means of bringing revolution about. This, divestment bringing about revolution, was the opinion of the Anchor.

S e x i s m , in w h a t e v e r f o r m it takes, proliferates false images of both m e n a n d w o m e n . It contributes negative attitudes t o w a r d r e l a t i o n s h i p s . And it f o c u s e s on t h e p h y s i c a l diff e r e n c e s r a t h e r t h a n the intellectual, e m o t i o n a l and s p i r i t u a l similarities between men and women.

J a m e s G e n t i l e in r e s p o n s e to the C o s m o p o l i t a n F r a t e r n i t y r u s h p o s t e r . It is unfortunate that Dr. Gentile h a s allowed his own p r e j u d i c e a g a i n s t G r e e k o r g a n i z a t i o n s to m a n i f e s t itself in s u c h a profoundly n e g a t i v e w a y . It h a s c o m e to m y k n o w l e d g e t h a t h e h a s instilled his own opinions to the Hope population to a m u c h g r e a t e r e x t e n t t h a n is p r u d e n t of a m a n in his position.

I feel t h a t it is t i m e for D r . Gentile a s well a s H o p e ' s s t u d e n t s to h e a r a little f r o m t h e o t h e r point of view, a view t h a t h a s been a s s a u l t e d a n d u n d e f e n d e d in his c l a s s e s , and c o n d e m n e d in his a r ticle.

His r e m a r k s , as f a r a s I c a n tell, a r e c o n c e r n e d with t h e line, " e a g e r b e a v e r " , t h a t a p p e a r s on the poster. Gentile's article r e f e r e d to t h i s p o s t e r in g e n e r a l a s being " r e p l e t e with v e r y thinly veiled s e x u a l i n n u e n d o s a s well a s d e r o g a t o r y ' g u t t e r s l a n g ' , street language often employed in r e f e r e n c e to w o m e n . If we a r e to c o n d e m n this poster, then we m u s t also condemn a vast s e g m e n t of advertising in general. If Dr. Gentile's way of interpreting a d v e r t i s i n g is the norm, then m o s t advertising is, in his own words, " a f l a g r a n t d i s r e g a r d for the concerns of women on this c a m p u s and women world-wide." One need not go very f a r to find exa m p l e s of advertising t h a t would b e c o n s i d e r e d o f f e n s i v e if scrutinized in the s a m e m a n n o r a s our poster. Using the mentality that Dr. Gentile p r o f e s s e s .

Hope's very own S.A.C. advertisement for the p a s t movies A Sure Thing and S o m e Like it Hot should surely be torn down for their offensiveness towards women.

In conclusion I would like to say that Dr. Gentile is entitiled to his own opinion on issues of Hope and the world, but he o v e r s t e p s his duties a s an e d u c a t o r when he deliberately d o w n g r a d e s a capm u s group in front of an entire class of students without that group p r e s e n t and able to defend itself.

Clarifieations Made on Anchor Editioral To the E d i t o r : With your editorial in last wek's Anchor, you h a v e m a d e some faulty i n f e r e n c e s about divestiture, the Anti-Apartheid Action Coalition (AAAC), Hope College, and South A f r i c a .

You mentioned t h a t the task force c r e a t e d last y e a r by the Board of T r u s t e e s w a s an effective m e a n s for looking into the South A f r i c a n situation. And you also s t a t e d it had the power to consider divestiture. It does, but only now, and only b e c a u s e of a reaction to the t h r e a t of a sit-in by concerned students.

The Anchor n e v e r m a d e it clear that the m e e t i n g of t 4 persons with specific responsibilities and c o n c e r n s " about South Africa was called only a f t e r R o b e r t Hoke r e s e r v e d DeWitt lobby for a sit-in. In fact, Hoke w a s notified s e v e r a l hours a f t e r he m a d e himself known to the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n .

Similarily, the concession by Dr. Van Wylen t h a t the Task F o r c e could expand its a g e n d a to include discussion of divestiture ocurred only b e c a u s e of complaints during the m e e t i n g by a Task Force m e m b e r and r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s of AAAC t h a t the Task F o r c e was " t o o t h l e s s " . Acc o r d i n g to a T a s k F o r c e m e m b e r , this was true: divestiture was not to be discussed. B e c a u s e of that t h r e a t of a sitin, though, the f u t u r e m i g h t be different.

More importantly,, your editorial misrepresented Anglican Bishop D e s m o n d Tutu.

It is implied t h a t Tutu, who most of know w a s a w a r d e d the 1984 Nobel P e a c e Prize, is a revolutionary and that he views divestiture a s a m e a n s to bring about revolution. Its design f e a t u r e s an a t t r a c t i v e architectural • style intended to compliment n e a r b y Voorhees and G r a v e s Halls.

The available s pac e in the new library will be 92,000 s q u a r e feet, m o r e than double the p r e s e n t library. The u p p e r two floors of Van Zoeren will be r e n o v a t e d to house a c a d e m i c d e p a r t m e n t s , including the E d u c a t i o n D e p a r t m e n t . The lower level of the present library will be r e m o d e l e d to house the college's growing archival collection.

This will be the first senior banquet of its kind and its objective is to congratulate, celebrate, and commend all graduating seniors and serve as somewhat of a "farewell feast."

In c a s e you h a v e been wondering w h a t P r e s i d e n t Van Wylen h a s been doing these last few weeks, take a look a r o u n d you.

Have you noticed how the c a m pus scenery h a s c h a n g e d ? According to Van Wylen, m o r e c h a n g e s a r e to come b e f o r e this s e m e s t e r ends.

F i r s t of all, the foundations of our library will be set. The construction c o m p n a y bidding took place earlier this month with the lowest bid c o m i n g f r o m P i o n e e r Constructin Co.. This c o m p a n y f a s h i o n e d o u r m o d e r n Dow Center and r e m o d e l e d the Dewitt building. A f t e r the bidding h a s been a p p r o v e d , construction will begin a s e a r l y a s M a r c h .

Houses will still be r e a r r a n g e d until the G u e s t house sits on the c o r n e r of 13th and Columbia, a n d the Admissions house m o v e s to 14th street. This building will t e m p o r a r i l y serve as housing and then be converted into t h e Nursing D e p a r t m e n t . This a r r a n g e m e n t will open up two new student p a r k i n g lots: open will b e behind the G u e s t house on 13th, a leveled house will m a k e room for a 42 s p a c e p a r k i n g lot, a n d t h e other is a s p a c e behind B r u m l e r a p a r t m e n t s t h a t will y e i l d another 60 spots to be a d d e d to the lot a l r e a d y t h e r e .

That's good news for those who h a v e p u t up with p a r k i n g tickets and t h e Siberia p a r k i n g lot for so long.

To m a k e all of this possible, t h e c a m p a i g n for Hope will r e m a i n in full swing until D e c e m b e r of 1986. Currently, the c a m p a i g n is 22.8 million t o w a r d s the goal of 26 million and it is to be e x t e n d e d to cities a c r o s s the country. P r e s i dent Van Wylen will be t r a v e l i n g to these cities d u r i n g the n e x t four m o n t h s with an exciting b u t extensive i t i n e r a r y . Though his work will b e for Hope, he r e g r e t s t h a t it will t a k e him f a r f r o m this fever-changing c a m p u s .

Follow-up on Fantasia Winter F a n t a s i a 1986 "A Touch of C l a s s , " once a g a i n h a s been toted a s H o p e ' s biggest and best social e v e n t . T h e S.A.C. c o m m i t tee did an excellent job in covering all points of the e v e n i n g ' s festivities f r o m t h e d i n n e r m u s i c p r o v i d e d by h a r p i s t H a r v i G r i f f i n to the L a s V e g a s style c a s i n o action t h a t took p l a c e l a t e r in t h e e v e n i n g . An initial s c a r e for coo r d i n a t o r of the f o r m a l Scott Wolterink w a s a n e a r no-show by the b a n d " C l a s s " who, it w a s later revealed, had major car t r o u b l e s yet n e g l e c t e d to get in c o n t a c t with a n y o n e to tell t h e m the p r o b l e m . T h e p a r t y w e n t well p a s t t h e m i d n i g h t hour when m a n y of t h e g u e s t s e i t h e r

Then, later, a s I w a s walking a r o u n d c a m p u s , I saw t h e c a r s on the road, the people walking, and thought, " L i f e still goes on in its m a d rush to w h e r e v e r A % G R O U P it's going. Nothing s e e m s to really a f f e c t a s m u c h a n y m o r e . We think " h o w s a d " a n d t h e n dismiss it f r o m our m i n d s . " Now I ' m not intending for us to dwell on the topic of deth and I certainly don't w a n t to b e c o m e morbid.

I just w a n t to e x a m i n e a little m o r e closely what it is, when a t r a g e d y like the Challenger blowing up occurs, that m a k e s us p a u s e for a m o m e n t , stunned by the event.

I believe the a n s w e r can be found within ourselves. We all to one d e g r e e or another f e a r the unknown and what is m o r e unknown and final than d e a t h ?

Couple the f e a r of the unknown with the sudden realization of the fragility of life and your sense of loss b e c o m e s clear. None of us like to be r e m i n d e d about the f r a g i l e n e s s of life, especially our own.

E v e n those of us who believe in an a f t e r l i f e - h e a v e n and hell-have deep down within us f e a r s about death.

But t h e r e is more. When you h a v e realized your f e a r s about death, do you jsut dismiss t h e m ?

I hope not b e c a u s e your f e a r s and thoughts about d e a t h can be radically altered by coming f a c e to f a c e with J e s u s Christ and His plan for your life a f t e r d e a t h .

With those words, seven h u m a n beings died in an o r a n g e white fireball a b o v e the Atlantic Ocean.

And a nation b e g a n to c r y .

Last Tuesday, my r o o m m a t e P e t e r took a m e s s a g e for m e while I was busy doing s o m e t h i n g t h a t p r e c l u d e d m y being able to c o m e to the phone.

When I asked w h a t it w a s , he looked at m e with a horrible, h a u n t e d e x p r e s s i o n a n d said ' G r e g Olgers jus t called. The s p a c e shuttle blew up.'

It s t a r t e d then, t h e grief. I held it in long enough to t a k e dictation f r o m Greg and get the s t o r y in the p a p e r . It built up o v e r an afternoon a s the day j u s t got w o r s e and w o r s e and worse.

T h i n g s b e c a m e trite, t r i v i a l i m p o r t a n t m a t t e r s of h o u r s ago w e r e n ' t so i m p o r t a n t a n y m o r e .

Bob Brink said it best, last T u e s d a y a f t e r n o o n : 'Its not fun when a national symbol goes up in smoke.'

I really only lost it twice, which suprised m e .

The first t i m e c a m e when, w a t c h i n g the news for the first t i m e t h a t a f t e r n o o n , I saw it happen all over again.

Then I saw, courtesy of ABC, the children f r o m Concord High a s the w a t c h e d their t e a c h e r die. I went into an i n s t a n t r a e o v e r how a n y o n e could put those children on television a f t e r d e a t h h a d just r e a c h e d out and touched their souls. The second t i m e c a m e while watching the evening news and the t a p e of the P r e s i d e n t ' s s peech.

R e a g a n looked a s shitty a s I felt, and when he said t h a t seven h e r o e s had 'touched the f a c e of God' I broke down and s c r e a m e d everything that had been building up into a s y m p a t h e t i c d u s t y old couch cushion.

There was pain everywhere t h a t day. A m u t u a l hurt, v a r y i n g in degrees, but t h e r e all the same.

Why? A p a r t of the national p r i d e died; t h a t ' s s o m e of it. T h e pain of the children is a n o t h e r for some.

The t r a g e d y h a s been l i k e n e d to t h e K e n n e d y assassination, rightly, I think, but why does it h u r t so m u c h ?

One person lies a t the core.

T e a c h e r s a r e for m e n e a r deity. The m o s t i m p o r t a n t people in m y life h a v e been, e x c e p t i n g m y p a r e n t s , m y t e a c h e r s . T h e imp a c t of a t e a c h e r w h e t h e r good or b a d is n e a r l y u n i m a g i n a b l e . We h a v e , for a b o u t 18 y e a r s now, b e e n working with a n d for t e a c h e r s and p r o f e s s o r s for nine m o n t h s of e v e r y y e a r , n e a r l y every, day in those m o n t h s , five

d a y s a week. They e v e n b e c o m e in s o m e c a s e s a s close or closer than family itself.

S o m e of u s will b e c o m e t e a c h e r s , a n d help little children, big children, a n d a d u l t s like ourselves to l e a r n a n d grow a s we m u d d l e o u r w a y t h r o u g h life.

Liked or not, r e s p e c t e d or not, t e a c h e r s a r e i m p o r t a n t p a r t s of our lives, a n d one died T u e s d a y last. S o m e w h e r e in everyone, t h a t h a d to h u r t .

She w a n t e d to go out into s p a c e to help 'bring b a c k t h e w o n d e r of it all,' especially for t h e children she taught, a n d all those she would t e a c h f r o m s p a c e . A m o r e noble quest n e v e r r e a l l y existed.

Bringing b a c k the w o n d e r of it all is s o m e t h i n g t h a t w e should all t r y to do.

She died t r y i n g to do it. T h a t m a k e s h e r a h e r o in m y book.

One t h a t will be r e m e m b e r e d for a s long a s I a m alive.

T h e r e a r e now, of course, quiet m o v e m e n t s to h a c k at NASA's p u r s e s t r i n g s . They a r e , a f t e r all, opponents s a y , d a n g e r o u s . J u s t look at w h a t h a p p e n e d and all will a g r e e : going into sp a c e is dangerous.

So was crossing the Atlantic.

As was t r a v e l l i n g f r o m the s a f e New E n g l a n d h a v e n s to the edge of the P a c i f i c . And the exploration of the Arctic, the A n t a r c t i c , South A m e r i c a , North A m e r i c a , the edge of s p a c e , b r e a k i n g the sound b a r r i e r , and the first step on the moon.

Yeah, l e a r n i n g is a d a n g e r o u s thing, a s those seven well knew.

Nothing is without risk, especially if it is worthwhile. Blowing your nose could be considered a d a n g e r o u s thing, if you do it wrong.

Would it be r i g h t to stop now? I think not. NASA will s e a r c h for their a n s w e r s , a n d when they a r e found, t h e r e will p r o b a b l y be s o m e r e c i m i n a t i o n s , s o m e corrections, a n d the q u e s t will then go on. T h a t is our n a t u r e , a s h u m a n b e i n g s ; to continue on, a g a i n s t risk, d a n g e r , t h r e a t of death.

Worlds of knowledg e lie out t h e r e beyond our a t m o s p h e r e .

Anyone who believes we a r e it is wrong.

O t h e r worlds, o t h e r peoples. S o m e w h e r e . Giving up the d r e a m now would be a slap in the f a c e of all those who h a v e died trying to give it to us, the people of all l a n d s for a s long a s there has been history.

T h e r e is pain, t h e r e is grief.

And t h e r e a r e s e v e n heroes, gone to s o m e p l a c e b e t t e r now.

We owe it to t h e m , to ourselves, to all m a n k i n d , to k e e p the d r e a m t h a t they h a d alive.

To bring b a c k t h e wonder of it all.

Means its been worked o v e r by something.

But what?

Only think I c a n r e a l l y sy for c e r t a i n that p r o c e s s e s a n y t h i n g is a cow when it chews its cud. I s t h a t what h a p p e n s with my d i n n e r ?

They feed a b u n c h of d i f f e r e n t kinds of c h e e s e s to s o m e bozo off the street, h a v e him h i c c u p a lump of it b a c k up, stuff it in a can, slap a lid on it followed by labelling the s u c k e r ' P a s t e u r i z e d Process A m e r i c a n Cheese F o o d . Uiey call it c h e e s e food. I know cheese is food, and, I would a s s u m e , so does e v e r y o n e else.

Cheese is cheese, but w h a t t h e heck is cheese food?

All this m u s i n g on m y d i n n e r got m e to w o n d e r i n g j u s t w h a t else lurked in m y kitchen, a n d so I went a searching.

I found s y r u p p r o d u c t . M r s .

B u t t e r w o r t h ' s S y r u p P r o d u c t , to be e x a c t . What the hell is s y r u p product, a n d w h a t ' s it doing in m y kitchen? F u r t h e r down on the label it s a y s .4 p e r c e n t b u t t e r .

T h a t m e a n s four p a r t s in one thousand of this m i x t u r e a r e butter, and that m e a n s you'd need an analytical c h e m i s t r y set u p to really a c c u r a t e l y find t h e stuff.

M a k e s you. w o n d e r just how m u c h b u t t e r is in s o m e t h i n g t h a t isn't b u t t e r w o r t h .

And product. Again, w h a t is a s y r u p product? t h e r e a r e products f r o m a l m o s t e v e r y t h i n g , including h u m a n beings, a n d we deposit them in c e r t a i n p l a c e s e v e r y few d a y s or so. Cows h a v e

products, o t h e r t h a n calves, a n d well call t h a t milk.

Can you milk a s y r u p ? Does it h a v e an u d d e r ? Is a s y r u p a thinking a n i m a l , or is it a kind of plant t h a t j u s t h a n g s out in specially designed greenhouses, waiting to be exploited for i t s products.

That I can see: something t h a t lives to be exploited. I know s o m e people like that.

Anyway, m y f u r t h e r s e a r c h e s t u r n e d up a c a n of g e n e r i c Artificially F l a v o r e d F r u i t P u n c h Drink Mix. Nice n a m e , h u h ?

Wait'll you s e e w h a t all they p u t in this s u c k e r .

We got s u g a r , dextrose, c i t r i c acid, n a t u r a l and artificial flavors, artificial color, a s c o r b i c acid, a n d p a r t i a l l y h y d r o g e n a t e d coconut a n d cottonseed oil. Ack. One by one, lets see w h a t it m e a n s . The first two a r e s u g a r s of one type or a n o t h e r , a n d the third is a n a t u r a l l y o c c u r i n g compound found in c i t r u s f r u i t s such a s o r a n g e s and lemons.

N a t u r a l and artificial f l a v o r s a r e

just t h a t : they h a p p e n e i t h e r cuz n a t u r e m a d e e m or w e did, a n d they h a v e t a s t e . Artificial color we m a k e in a l a b s o m e w h e r e (in this c a s e its a kind of l u m i n o u s red) a n d t h e a s c o r b i c acid is some sort of c h e m i c a l p r e s e r vative.

Then t h e r e ' s the k i c k e r . P a r tially h y d r o g e n a t e d m e a n s its been organically s o a k e d in stuff to p u m p a c o u p l e e x t r a hydrogens onto a n o t h e r w i s e innocuous kind of p l a n t oil.

As a m a t t e r of f a c t , you c a n m a k e all of this stuff in an organic c h e m i s t r y l a b without a whole lot of e f f o r t . You could probably m a k e it out of s y r u p product, if the spirit so m o v e d you, or saliva or t h a t m a t t e r .

My r o o m m a t e p r o t e s t e d his b r a i n s out when I v e n t u r e d t h a t opinion. What about the s u g a r , he yelled. E v e r h e a r d of blood s u g a r s , Dave? We gots plenty o' those. T h a t ' s one of the m o r e simple reactions, I ' d s a y .

Still, I c a n ' t help but wonder about t h a t B u t t e r y F l a v o r e d Popping Oil I saw j u s t a few d a y s ago. M a y b e its for the best t h a t I don't. Too m u c h of this and I may never eat again.

1 didn't go to all the event I could have, such a s J a n e B y r n e ' s workshop on ' W o m e n in Polities', the chpel services, or t h e SAC movies. (My interest in politics faded once I got to Hope, And | organized religion and I h a v e n ' t gotton along too well in t h e last couple of y e a r s - a l s o p r e t t y m u c h I since I c a m e to Hope, but t h a t ' s a [different story.)

I did listen to t h e f o r m e r m a y o r |of Chicago's keynote a d d r t e s s , took in both a r t shows, h e a r d Ms. Sergio's l e c t u r e on 4 The P o w e r Women Have Not Used' a n d at|tended Ms. Brooks' p e r f o r m a n c e | in the Dewitt T h e a t r e . I found Ms. Sergio to be delightful and c h a r m i n g . The p o w e r she focused on--the vote, our education. an innate sensitivity she felt Web common to all w o m e n appeared valid, especially with regard to the vote. AT t h e s a m e time, however, I left the lecture feeling that even if w o m e n a r e

w a n t e d to " g o " again. H e w a s tired. When she a s k e d h i m why, pointing to the movie in which she h a d seen him c o m e five t i m e s in one hour, he replied, " T h a t movie took five w e e k s to f i l m . " Humorous? perhaps. But the point is c l e a r : porn c r e a t e s u n r e a l i s t i c i m a g e s of m e n a n d sets up u n r e a s o n a b l e e x p e c t a tions.

Denying or avoiding t h e f a c t t h a t m e n a r e negatively a f f e c t e d by p o r n o g r a p h y a s well a s w o m e n , t u r n s It into a w o m e n ' s issue r a t h e r t h a n a s h a r e d issue.

Both m e n and w o m e n n e e d to b e concerned about the e f f e c t s of p o r n o g r a p h y h a s on the whole of society, not b e c a u s e w o m e n a r e the w e a k e r sex a n d a r e n ' t a s able to fight a g a i n s t evil ( I ' m being s a r c a s t i c ) , but b e c a u s e both h a v e a v e s t e d interest in t h e outc o m e of t h a t battle.

In addition to h u r t i n g e a c h sex individuality, p o r n o g r a p h y e a t s a w a y at t h e network of relationships between m e n and w o m e n .

It p r o m o t e s false i m a g e s , i m a g e s both sexes m u s t fight a g a i n s t within their relationships. It enc o u r a g e s selfgratification on the p a r t of m e n and silent submission on the p a r t of the w o m e n . It lies, c h e a t i n g those who w a t c h it out of any r e a l defintion of love.

It ignores all but the physical e l e m e n t s of an individual, forgett i n g that people a r e also emotional, intellectual and spiritual beings.

It t e a c h e s degrading, violent behavior, especially toward women, a n d depicts false enjoym e n t o f pain.

n a t u r a l l y w e a k e r b u t m o r e sensitive t h a n men, it is also t r u e t h a t both s t r e n g t h a n d sensitivity c a n be l e a r n e d .

Apart from WOMEN'S WEEK, a t least t h e s e event w e r e n ' t listed in their c a l e n d e r of event, I witnessed the sit-in s t a g e d by t h e Anti-Apartheid Coalition, listened to s o m e of t h e s p e a k e r s a n d p r a y e d with t h e m . I saw a film entitled 'Not a Love Story', a d o c u m e n t a a r y about porn o g r a p h y in A m e r i c a . I also p a r ticipated in one of t h e discussion groups held a f t e r w a r d s .

The e v e n t s d u r i n g W o m e n ' s Week brought s e v e r a l questions to the s u r f a c e of m y thinking, questions I'd been wrestling with o v e r the last y e a r a n d a half, but h a d avoided. T h e s e questions focused on my role a s a w o m a n v s my role as a p e r s o n , the reality of w o m e n ' s ( a s opposed to h u m a n ) issues a n d the quality of m y relationships.

I found myself feeling a n g r y during m u c h of W o m e n ' s Week.

And it took m e a while to underst a n d w h a t was at the root of m y a n g e r . I felt isolated f r o m o t h e r s and alone in m y f e a r s and t h a t isolation. Along with these feelings, I h a d the sense that the isolation t h a t I w a s e x p e r e n c i n g had something to do with being labeled a w o m a n , a n d t h a t caused my a n g e r .

s t a t e m e n t to m a k e , but m a n y of m y " s i s t e r s " do h a t e m e n (and m a n y m e n feel they a r e t h e obj e c t s of t h a t h a t r e d ) . I do not a g r e e with the choice to hate, but I c a n u n d e r s t a n d the r a g e t h a t f e e d s their h a t r e d .

I ' v e been t h e r e - I am there.

Seeing 'Not a Love S t o r y ' , during W o m e n ' s Week, p u t m e in touch with s o m e of t h e a n g e r , the r a g e , I feel toward sexist behavior. In this c a s e the focus was pronography.

On the a v e r a g e , people who s p e a k our a g a i n s t p o r n a g r a p h y c o n c e n t r a t e on the h a r m f u l eff e c t s it h a s on w o m e n . Truly, w o m e n a r e m o r e often the subj e c t s of p o r n o g r p a h y a n d m e n a r e the p r e d o m i n e n t c o n s u m e r s .

Women a r e often r a p e d , beaten, g a g g e d , h a n d c u f f e d a n d even killed for the s a k e of producing pornography.

Too often society's reaction to pornography places an unfair b u r d e n on m e n . B e c a u s e they a r e the p r i m a r y c o n s u m e r s , society (mostly w o m e n ) tends to l u m p all m e n into one selfcentered, d o m i n e e r i n g group.

We m a k e t h e m the sole villians and think t h a t women a r e the only victims. Not true.

In a r a t h e r h u m o r o u s anecdote f r o m 'Not a Love Story', f o r m e r porn actor explained one of the n e g a t i v e e f f e c t s porn h a s on m e n . He h a d just finished h a v i n g â&#x20AC;˘ I do not hate m e n . Now, t h a t sex with a w o m e n who h a d seen m a y sound like a p r e t t y s t r a n g e him in one of his films. She

Education is the key s t a r t i n g point o fight p o r n o g r a p h y . Exposure to the p r o b l e m through d o c u m e n t a r i e s like 'Not a Love Story' m a y be painful a s well a s s h o c k i n g . B u t this kind of a w a r e n e s s is n e c e s s a r y if we a r e going to be a b l e to expose porn o g r a p h y as t h e evil it is. Men a s well a s w o m e n a r e victims.

T h e s e x i s t a t t i t u d e s pornography p r o m o t e s and s u p p o r t s - t h e a u t o c r a t i c submis-. sion of w o m e n , the s u p e r m a n virility of m e n , the elevation of the physical a t t h e e x p e n s e of the emotional. Intellectual, and spiritual, and the e r r o n e o u s defintions of l o v e - s h o u l d not be tolerated at any level, p e r s o n a l l y - w l t h l n our families and friendships, and c o m m u n a l l y - w i t h i n our schools, our g o v e r n m e n t s , our c h u r c h e s , our work places and our n e i g h b o r h o o d s , w e n e e to e d u c a t e one a n o t h e r , WE need to join f o r c e s a n d fight the e n e m y r a t h e r than e a c h other.

During W o m e n ' s Week, I h e a r d the t e r m s sexist and s e x i s m tossed a r o u n d a lot. I hope I live to see a day when W o m e n ' s Week will no longer be n e c e s s a r y . By then these t e r m s will h a v e lost their i m p o r t a n c e a s well. I wrote this article within the context of W o m e n ' s Week b e c a u s e of those feelings, to i l l u s t r a t e - s o m e h o w the issues c u r r e n t l y thought of a s " w o m e n ' s i s s u e s " , such as pornography, a r e issues that actually involve the whole of our society-both m e n and w o m e n .

Hope's Lacrosse Club begins New Season with a Brighter Outlook"^

Perhaps many have n e v e r h e a r d of l a c r o s s e . T h i s is rather unfortunate because d e s p i t e its lack of recognition, l a c r o s s e p r o v i d e s all the v i e w i n g p l e a s u r e t h a t any o t h e r p h y s i c a l ly a g g r e s s i v e c o n t a c t s p o r t does.

The protective equipment that the p l a y e r s w e a r is a good indication of j u s t how b r u t a l t h i s s p o r t is.

M a t t N e i l ' s t e a m c a m e off a n ex-^ citing victory o v e r Calvin and* p r o m p t l y a t t e n d e d to t h e b u s i n e s s a t h a n d . They c o n t i n u e d t h e i r winning w a y s with an imp r e s s i v e 93 to 76 victory, boosting t h e i r r e c o r d to 5-7.

It w a s a b a t t l e of t h e big m e n a s D a n Olson led H o p e ' s s c o r e r s , for t h e second g a m e in a row, with 24. A l m a ' s c e n t e r , J o h n M o h r e led e v e r y o n e with 25. It w a s n ' t enough, however, as A l m a d r o p p e d to 3-9.

In t h e V a r s i t y m a t c h u p , 1,650 f a n s p a c k e d t h e m s e l v e s into t h e Civic C e n t e r in a n t i c i p a t i o n of a D u t c h m e n victory.

I t w a s a m u s t - w i n s i t u a t i o n for t h e D u t c h m e n in JJieir j o u r n e y t o w a r d a sixth s ^ a i g h t MIAA c r o w n . H o w e v e r , i f y o u shoot only 46 p e r c e n t f r o m ^ i e floor, you will not win m a n | > g a m e s , exp e c i a l l y w h e n tho 1 . o t h e r t e a m shoots 56 p e r c e n t .

Such was the case Wednesday a s H o p e s u f f e r e d t h e i r second c o n s e c u t i v e loss.

It h a s been a D u t c h m e n -

d o m i n a t e d s e r i e s , with H o p e winning 75 of the p r e v i o u s 115 g a m e s b e t w e e n the two c o n f e r e n c e r i v a l s . T h e l a s t Scot v i c t o r y c a m e in 1981 by t h e s c o r e of 79-72.

A l m a b r o u g h t in two of the M I A A ' s top ten s c o r e r s in M a r k Bussell and Scott Lewis. In the f i r s t half they r e m a i n e d t r u e to f o r m . Bussell p o u r e d in 18 points a n d L e w i s hit six.

H o p e h a d b a l a n c e d s c o r i n g in t h e f i r s t s t a n z a , but it w a s n ' t q u i t e enough. Bill V a n d e r b i l t h a d e i g h t while T i m D e n n i s o n a n d Todd M a r s m a n e a c h h a d five.

If Hope h a d s c o r e d on all t h e i r s h o t s it would h a v e b e e n a diff e r e n t b a l l g a m e . I t ' s h a r d to get a l e a d w h e n you shoot 37 p e r c e n t .

As a result, H o p e w a s d e f e a t e d 83-77.

On a m o r e p l e a s a n t note f o r t h e D u t c h m e n , in t h e f i r s t half t h e y m a d e 11 out of 16 f r o m t h e f r e e t h r o w line.

Todd M a r s m a n also had a j a m t h a t b r o u g h t t h e c r o w d to life in an o t h e r w i s e one-sided f i r s t half.

In the s e c o n d h a l f , H o p e hit 12 out of 16 f r e e t h r o w s to e n d t h e g a m e a t 72 p e r c e n t .

A l m a c e n t e r M a r k B u s s e l l hit a g a m e high 30 p o i n t s to h e l p t h e

Alma cause immensely.

Hope did m a k e a r u n a t the l e a d t o w a r d t h e end. Scott G e l a n d e r p r o v i d e d t h e hot h a n d in the second h a l f . He hit s e v e r a l key b u c k e t s down t h e s t r e t c h and e n d e d t h e g a m e with 20 points. If of those c a m e in t h e s e c o n d h a l f .

Fouls eliminated Todc M a r s m a n but by t h e n it w a s al b u t o v e r . T h e i r r e c o r d nov s t a n d s a t 4-2 in t h e MIAA, a n d 10 7 overall.

T h e only consolation for H o p e is t h a t it is possible t h a t Calvin could lose two m o r e g a m e s s o m e w h e r e down t h e r o a d .

I t ' s possible, b u t highly unlikely.

Calvin s h o w e d no ill e f f e c t s of t h e close g a m e a g a i n s t H o p e l a s t week a s t h e y d u m p e d K a l a m a z o o 91-60.

One of those l o s s e s could possible c o m e a t t h e h a n d s of t h e Dutc h m e n w h e n C a l v i n visit the friendly c o n f i n e s of t h e Civic C e n t e r on F e b . 19.

R e g a r d l e s s of t h e o u t c o m e of t h a t g a m e , H o p e will h a v e to r e g r o u p a n d win t h e r e s t of t h e i r g a m e s . T h e y ' l l a l s o h a v e to h o p e f o r t h e b e s t t h a t Calvin will lose a t l e a s t two g a m e s . Only t h e n c a n t h e y b e c o m e MIAA c h a m pions.

30 p e r c e n t of t h e p l a y e r s a r e now c o n s i d e r e d v e t e r a n s . G r e g g said, t h a t two of t h e l a r g e s t p r o b l e m s t h a t f a c e d t h e c l u b l a s t y e a r , and t h r e a t e n to do so this y e a r a r e the lack of s t u d e n t a n d f a c u l t y s u f c port, a s well a s l a c k of equipm e n t . If s u p p o r t i n c r e a s e s Hope m a y include l a c r o s s e a s a v a r s i t y sport. Since v a r s i t y s p o r t t e a m s a r e m o r e s u f f i c i e n t l y f u n d e d by t h e school t h a n a r e t h e c l u b s , this would help to e l i m i n a t e t h e lack of e q u i p m e n t . A n o t h e r b a r r i e r which t h e t e a m is s t r i v i n g to o v e r c o m e is t h a t of a historically " b a d r e p u t a t i o n . " It s e e m s as though a few y e a r s a g o t h e Flying D u t c h m e n w e r e k n o w n to be a bit e x c i t a b l e or p e r h a p s a little too a g g r e s s i v e . G r e g g a n d the t e a m will b e w o r k i n g h a r d this s e a s o n to o v e r c o m e t h e c l u b ' s n e g a t i v e l a b e l . In d o i n g so, the t e a m will b u i l d u n i t y , a n d ' utimately h a v e fun.

The lacrosse g a m e schedule does not s t a r t until a f t e r s p r i g ^ b r e a k , h o w e v e r , in the^ m e a r r t i m e w o r k o u t s will continue.

Women and Men Swimmers Overtake Calvin to Step Closer to MIAA Title

Hope got off to a p e r f e c t s t a r t as the 400 Medley R e l a y t e a m of Connie R r a m e r , P a m Sims, J e n nifer S t r a l e y , and Shelly Russell took first place. D i s t a n c e s w i m mers J a n e t Carlson, Betsy Andree, and J a n e t Hoogland s w e p t Uie looo y a r d freestyle, although b e c a i ! ^ of the scoring s y s t e m , only f i r s t and second p l a c e SFored. On the boards, Hope divers K a r l a Koops and Diane Vos showed good form, placing second and third respectively in both the one and t h r e e - m e t e r e v e n t s behind C a l v i n ' s Sari Brummel.

The 100 f r e e s t y l e w a s a v e r y close event, but Hope's Russell (56.3) and Houting (56.4) c a m e out on top, b e a t i n g Liesl V a n d e Creek of Calvin (56.9). K r a m e r ' s 200 back t i m e (2:20.7) w a s f a s t enough for first, Rubin a n d Hoogland c a m e in first a n d second respectively in the 500 f r e e , and in the 200 b r e a s t s t r o k e S i m s and Carlson placed second a n d third. The F l y i n g Dutch e n d e d a s perfectly a s they b e g a n , a s Houting, A n d r e e , B e r g m a n , and Russell won the 400 f r e e r e l a y in 3:50.7.

The victory over Calvin gives Hope's women s w i m m e r s a p e r f e c t 3-0 r e c o r d in MIAA action. This S a t u r d a y t h e D u t c h will travel to Alma f o r their fourth MIAA dual m e e t .

Hope s t a r t e d the m e e t on the r i g h t foot by winning the 400 m e d l y r e l a y with the t e a m of Geof G r e e n e i s e n , P e t e Tilden, M a r c e l Sales, a n d Rob Peel. Mike W e i r s m a a n d B r u c e Brown then finished second and third, r e s p e c t i v e l y in the 1000yd. free. T h e D u t c h m e n then regained their winning w a y s a s Dirk Van P u t t e n won t h e 200 f r e e , Rob Peel won the 50 f r e e , a n d P e t e Tilden won the 2001.M. Then T i m S u l l i v a n f i n i s h e d strong in t h e 200 fly to place second behind Hope's Dirk Van P u t t e n . P e e l won the 100 f r e e with M a t t Weigle finishing third.

Greeneisen a n d E r i c S h u g a r s then finished 2-3 in the 200 back as did W e i r s m a a n d Brown in the 500 free. Needing only two points in the final two e v e n t s Tilden a n d Kirt Van Overen p l a c e d 1-3 in t h e 200 b r e a s t to clinch the Dutc h m e n victory.

The t e a m will t r a v e l to A l m a next w e e k e n d and then swim their final h o m e m e e t a g a i n s t Adrian on F e b . 15. The t e a m needs to c a p t u r e t h e s e last two m e e t s to clinch a s h a r e of t h e MIAA title going into the l e a g u e m e e t on F e b . 20-22.
