Faculty Rejects Midmorning Chapel Service B y C a n d y M arr a n c h o r Reporter A faculty vote has eliminated the p o s s i b i l i t y of c h a p e l s e r v i c e s at 10 a . m . f o r at least a n o t h e r semester. At t h e J a n u a r y 2 0 f a c u l t y meeting the p r o p o s e d T u e s d a y - T h u r s d a y 10 a . m . c h a p e l p l a n w a s vetoed b y a v o t e of 7 0 to 3 0 , a n d sent b a c k to t h e Student Life Board. T H E PROPOSAL, which would h a v e p r o v i d e d for a one-semester e x p e r i m e n t with a m i d - m o r n -

i n g w o r s h i p s e r v i c e twice a week a s a n a l t e r n a t i v e to the p r e s e n t 8 a . m . c h a p e l , w a s put f o r t h a s a p o s s i b l e m e a n s of m a k i n g the current chapel program more m e a n i n g f u l a n d i n c r e a s i n g student interest a n d p a r t i c i p a t i o n , e s p e c i a l l y a m o n g j u n i o r s a n d seniors. O p p o s i t i o n to the p r o p o s a l w a s v i g o r o u s at the m e e t i n g a n d motives were v a r i e d . T h e f e e l i n g w a s e x p r e s s e d a m o n g m a n y of the science f a c u l t y t h a t the p l a n w a s u n d e s i r a b l e b e c a u s e a 10 a . m . service would interrupt labora-

tory p e r i o d s , t h u s f o r c i n g the u n d e r c l a s s m e n e n r o l l e d in s u c h l a b s to a t t e n d c h a p e l o n M o n d a y s and Wednesdays. T H E R E WAS A L S O s t r o n g opp o s i t i o n f r o m s o m e q u a r t e r s bec a u s e of t h e s c h e d u l i n g p r o b l e m s f o r e s e e n in d e p a r t m e n t s where c l a s s e s meet m o r e t h a n t h r e e d a y s a week. T h e feeling w a s t h a t stud e n t s w o u l d h a v e d i f f i c u l t y rem e m b e r i n g w h i c h d a y s their c l a s s met at 8 a n d w h e n it c o n v e n e d at 8 : 3 0 a . m . , a c c o r d i n g to f a c u l t y m e m b e r s w h o a t t e n d e d the meeting.

Other reasons expressed by t h o s e w h o v o t e d a g a i n s t the p r o p o s a l r a n g e d f r o m t h o s e w h o felt c h a p e l s h o u l d b e held at 10 a . m . e v e r y d a y , a s o p p o s e d to o n l y T u e s d a y a n d T h u r s d a y , to t h o s e w h o felt t h a t 8 a . m . w a s the p r o per t i m e f o r c h a p e l a n d were opposed to a n y experimentation with the p r e s e n t s y s t e m . T H E A R G U M E N T WAS a l s o put f o r t h t h a t the 10 a . m . t i m e period would virtually preclude the p a r t i c i p a t i o n of a n y c h o r a l g r o u p in s u c h a s e r v i c e b e c a u s e t h a t w o u l d be insufficient t i m e f o r r o b i n g and w a r m i n g up. F u r t h e r o p p o s i t i o n w a s registered b e c a u s e t h e r e w a s a f e e l i n g that j u d g i n g f r o m the r e s u l t s of the 2 1 0 0 p l a n the p r o p o s a l w o u l d p r o b a b l y h a v e little r e a l effect ins o f a r a s i n c r e a s i n g s t u d e n t interest a n d v o l u n t a r y p a r t i c i p a t i o n . T h e fact w a s i d s o b r o u g h t u p t h a t a s i m i l a r p r o g r a m w a s tried s e v e r al y e a r s a g o with g e n e r a l l y n e g a tive r e a c t i o n s f r o m b o t h s t u d e n t s a n d faculty. itiated it, t h a t it w o u l d p e r h a p s help to m a x i m i z e b o t h p a r t i c i p a tion a n d m e a n i n g f u l n e s s in the c h a p e l services. T h e r e w e r e s o m e faculty m e m b e r s t o o w h o , alt h o u g h not p a r t i c u l a r l y in f a v o r of t h e p r o p o s a l , felt it at l e a s t des e r v e d to p r o v e o r d i s p r o v e the v a lidity of t h e r a t i o n a l e b e h i n d its presentation a n d therefore voted in f a v o r of it. The plan was originally proposed b y the B l u e R i b b o n C o m m i t t e e on the c h a p e l issue last y e a r a n d had p a s s e d t h e R e l i g i o u s Life C o m m i t t e e a n d t h e C a m p u s Life Board before coming up before the f a c u l t y . T H E 10 A.M. P L A N a s pro^ posed, was a c o m p r o m i s e between t h o s e w h o w i s h e d to see c h a p e l at 8 a . m . first s e m e s t e r a n d at 10 a . m . s e c o n d s e m e s t e r a n d t h o s e w h o were r e l u c t a n t to t r y o n e full s e m e s t e r of e x p e r i m e n t a l 10 a . m . chapel. The committee, headed by T r u s t e e A. Dale S t o e p p e l s , interv i e w e d a n u m b e r of m e n d i r e c t l y a n d i n d i r e c t l y i n v o l v e d with H o p e athletics. " W e were a s k e d to e v a l u a t e the p l a c e of i n t e r c o l l e g i a t e athletics at H o p e , " s a i d Mr. Stoeppels.
