O l i v e r N o r t h , m o s t k n o w n for his testimony in the I r a n - C o n t r a s c a n d a l , is c o m i n g to H o p e C o l l e g e o n April 8. N o r t h , a M a r i n e l i e u t e n a n t c o l o n e l , lost the 1994 race f o r a Virginia U.S. S e n a t e seat and has a daily s y n d i c a t e d r a d i o talk s h o w b r o a d cast n a t i o n w i d e . H o w e v e r , his c l a i m t o f a m e w a s his c o n n e c t i o n to and testimony in the IranC o n t r a scandal. It is no big secret that p a r k i n g can b e a nightm a r e on c a m p u s . H o w e v e r , this p r o b l e m extends b e y o n d the c o n c e r n s of students a n d a f f e c t s faculty, staff and e v e n m e m b e r s of the community. As of D e c e m b e r , Public Safety had issued 3 3 9 m o r e p a r k i n g tickets than it h a d by that t i m e the p r e v i o u s year. A l t h o u g h the n u m b e r of tickets are s k y - r o c k e t i n g , the n u m b e r of students receiving tickets is n o t necessarily on the rise. T h e m a j o r i t y of t h e s e tickets are being issued d u r i n g the day to n o n - r e g i s t e r e d vehicles, said D u a n e Terpstra, Director of Public Safety. " M a n y visitors p a r k in faculty and staff lots
during meetings and conferences. I would speculate that these are the cars being ticketed," T e r p s t r a said. O f t e n , H o p e will not receive any revenue f r o m tickets issued to n o n - r e g i s t e r e d vehicles. " W e really do not have any authority over nonstudents. S o l v i n g this p r o b l e m is n o t easy. Everts suggests assigning lots to f a c u l t y m e m b e r s a n d d e s ignating m o r e s p a c e s in o n e lot f o r visitors only. " A s a f a c u l t y m e m b e r , I w o u l d like a g u a r a n teed spot e v e n if it is not the m o s t c o n v e n i e n t o n e , " Everts said. O t h e r possibilities i n c l u d e limiting the n u m b e r of student cars or p l a c i n g gates on lots. But until a solution is d e v e l o p e d , it is e v e r y driver for himself.
