t h e beast held a pair of pink p a n t i e s , and so m o s t p e o p l e ass u m e d t h a t t h e a n i m a l was h u n g f r o m t h e ceiling as a b i z a r r e rej o i n d e r t o a n o t o r i o u s p a n t y raid of several w e e k s b e f o r e . O t h e r s w o n d e r e d if it was s o m e o n e ' s personal response to the c o m p u l s o r y c h a p e l c o n t r o v e r s y t h a t was raging at t h e t i m e .

I felt a l o n g t h e wall f o r a light s w i t c h but t h e r e was n o n e , so 1 c l i m b e d t h e stairs in d a r k n e s s .
T H A T ' S NO B U L L - T h a t ' s a S o u t h African water b u f f a l o , part of the c o l l e c t i o n o f skulls, b o n e s and relics in the Hope College m u s e u m on t h e f o u r t h floor of Van Raalte Hall. The c o l l e c t i o n has b e e n d w i n d l i n g , as occasional " l o a n s " from the m u s e u m result in stolen items.

A L S O D I S C U S S E D was a proposal f r o m t h e P r o f e s s i o n a l int e r e s t C o m m i t t e e of the f a c u l t y f o r f a c u l t y r e p r e s e n t a t i o n o n the Board. A second proposal from t h e f a c u l t y a s k e d f o r f u l l disc l o s u r e of n o n - c o n f i d e n t i a l i n f o r m a t i o n a n d d i s t r i b u t i o n of Board m i n u t e s t o t h e f a c u l t y . B o t h proposals were returned to the f a c u l t y f o r c o n s o l i d a t i o n a n d reconsideration. T h e E x e c u t i v e C o m m i t t e e of the B o a r d h e a r d t e s t i m o n y f r o m department chairmen Thursday m o r n i n g w h i c h d e a l t with the PIC proposal and s t a t e m e n t s concerning t h e P r e s i d e n t of t h e College. In a f o u r - p a g e p o s i t i o n p a p e r , t h e c h a i r m e n n o t e d t h e lack of direct communication between the Board a n d the f a c u l t y . T h e p a p e r f u r t h e r stated that " t h e President failed t o p r o v i d e a d e q u a t e f u n d s , " and t h a t he did n o t give " a c a d e m ic l e a d e r s h i p . " SEVERAL DEPARTMENT chairmen c o m m e n t e d alter the m e e t i n g t h a t , " w e s k i r t e d the issues. it was a v e r y a w k w a r d situat i o n , as all t h e p a r t i e s involved were p r e s e n t . T h e m e e t i n g really d l d l A c o m e t0 t o o m u c h T h e B o a r d later m e t in e x e c u . live' session a n d issued a letter t o ^ thanking them for c|la|rmen X h e l e t t e r , issued c o n c e r n ^ Board Secretary Willard w i c h e r s , c o n t i n u e d by saying t h a t g o a r c j " r e a f f i r m e d its c o n f i t|ie d e n c e in t h e P r e s i d e n t . " T h e Adm i n i s t r a t i v e C o u n c i l w a s given a similar s t a t e m e n t i m m e d i a t e l y following the Board meeting Friday. IN T H E I R M E E T I N G with t h e F x e c u t i v e C o m m i t t e e , the c h a i r men also s u p p o r t e d t h e idea of faculty representation on the Board of T r u s t e e s . T h e idea orig i n a t e d last y e a r , a n d was pres e n t e d as a p r o p o s a l by the PIC w e e k s ago. T h e p r o p o s a l asks
t h a t , " t w o f a c u l t y m e m b e r s be e l e c t e d at large by the f a c u l t y t o serve o n t h e Board f o r t w o y e a r s . " These faculty m e m b e r s would " p a r t i c i p a t e as v o t i n g m e m b e r s w i t h all r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s a n d privileges of Board m e m b e r s ( a n d ) report to the faculty unrestricted i n f o r m a t i o n regarding the actions of t h e B o a r d . " T H E P R O P O S A L A L S O asks t h a t " f o r each c o m m i t t e e of t h e B o a r d , t h e r e be o n e f a c u l t y m e m ber a p p o i n t e d by t h e S t a t u s C o m m i t t e e t o serve in a liaison m a n n e r between the faculty and that committee for a two year period." T h e r e s p o n s i b i l i t y of t h e liaison p e r s o n w o u l d be t o " r e p r e s e n t f o r m u l a t e d f a c u l t y o p i n i o n conc e r n i n g t h e m a j o r issues which c o n f r o n t the College, and f u n c tion as a r e s o u r c e p e r s o n for the Board c o m m i t t e e . " T h e r a t i o n a l e for t h e p r o p o s a l stated that "such representation will a l l o w the f a c u l t y t o particip a t e in t h e C o l l e g e ' s decisionmaking process, utilize faculty k n o w l e d g e in p o l i c y f o r m a t i o n and i m p r o v e B o a r d - f a c u l t y c o m m u n i c a t i o n . " The rationale further stated that, " s u c h participation will g u a r a n t e e t h a t all lines of c o m m u n i c a t i o n w i t h i n t h e College will be u t i l i z e d as College policy is d e v e l o p e d by t h e B o a r d . " A SECOND PROPOSAL, passed by t h e f a c u l t y earlier, a s k e d that the Board of T r u s t e e s d i s t r i b u t e m i n u t e s of its m e e t i n g s t o t h e f a c u l t y and t h a t the Board disclose additional information b e y o n d its g e n e r a l policy statem e n t s t o t h e f a c u l t y . T h e Board t o o k n o a c t i o n on t h e s e p r o p o s a l s , b u t r e c o m m e n d e d t h a t t h e y be c o m b i n e d or a l t e r e d . When it is r e - w r i t t e n , t h e n e w p r o p o s a l will be s t u d i e d by a c o m m i t t e e of the B o a r d o n College g o v e r n a n c e . In o t h e r a c t i o n , an o f f i c i a l s t a t e m e n t of the B o a r d said t h a t " p l a n s were d i s c u s s e d f o r a camp a i g n t o raise f u n d s t o v a l i d a t e the f e d e r a l grant a n d l o a n f o r c o n s t r u c t i o n of an a c a d e m i c science center."
