Do we a d v o c a t e e l i m i n a t i n g all r u l e s a q d h a v i n g c o m p l e t e a n a r c h y ? Of c o u r s e n o t . The statement further said, " There are certain basic laws that m u s t b i n d m a n k i n d . We s h o u l d s t r e s s t h a t it isn't the b i g r u l e s t h a t stifle us, it is the c r e e p i n g little o n e s . L a w s t h a t h a v e a b a s e are necessary. " A n d t h a t is h o w we s e p a r a t e the i m p o r t a n t o n e s f r o m the triv i a , b y a s k i n g the q u e s t i o n : W h a t is the l o g i c a l f o u n d a t i o n of this rule. Barb Timmer and Jan Sebens, a s c o - c h a i r m e n of t h e m e e t i n g , s u g g e s t e d t h a t c o m m i t t e e s be o r g a n i z e d to d r a f t a g e n e r a l p r o p o s a l of c h a n g e s w h i c h w o u l d b e p r e s e n t e d to AWS f o r c o n s i d e r a tion. C o m m i t t e e s u n d e r t h e h e a d i n g s of t h e H a n d b o o k , A W S officers, d o r m r e g u l a t i o n s , a n d o t h e r regulations, (which included subc o m m i t t e e s o n h o u r s , e a t i n g off c a m p u s , dress, permissions and s m o k i n g ) , w e r e set u p .

O N E G I R L WAS a p p o i n t e d chairman of e a c h c o m m i t t e e , w h i c h will meet to d i s c u s s specificp r o b l e m s . C o m m i t t e e results will be r e p o r t e d at a g e n e r a l m e e t i n g next W e d n e s d a y n i g h t . These res u l t s will be i n c o r p o r a t e d i n t o the final p r o p o s a l p r e s e n t e d to AWS. Miss T i m m e r e m p h a s i z e d t h a t the k e y to these m e e t i n g s a n d s u b sequent proposal was organization. "We can't d o a n y t h i n g by a little o u t b r e a k h e r e o r a little sneak p l a y there," she comm e n t e d . Miss S e b e n s a n d Miss T i m m e r expressed their intention of v i s i t i n g Mrs. Isla V a n Kenen a a m , Dean of W o m e n , to e x p l a i n the g r o u p ' s g o a l .

Several students voiced displeas u r e with the w a y AWS r e p r e s e n t a tives w e r e elected. " W e were g i v e n a list of n a m e s at a d o r m m e e t i n g a n d w e r e told o u r A W S r e p r e s e n t a t i v e w o u l d be d e c i d e d b y a n

o n - t h e - s p o t v o t e . We h a d n o p a r t in d e c i d i n g the n o m i n a t i o n s . " O n e girl stated that such n o m i n a t i o n s w e r e d e c i d e d b y the h o u s e m o t h e r a n d the RAs. M A N Y G I R L S W E R E concerned a b o u t the f a c t t h a t A W S r u l e a n d p o l i c y c h a n g e s w e r e not k n o w n a b o u t until a f t e r t h e y h a d been p u t into effect. " W e k n o w n o t h i n g a b o u t the origin or content of the o r i g i n a l p r o p o s a l s , " o n e girl c o m p l a i n e d . A m e m b e r of the AWS c o u n c i l p r e s e n t at the meeting, said that there w a s no reason for such u n a w a r e n e s s as all AWS m e e t i n g s were o p e n .

It w a s t h e n s u g g e s t e d t h a t a g r o u p of w o m e n a t t e n d t h e next meeting on T u e s d a y . Such action w a s stymied after thecouncil member revealed that Tuesday's (Continued

Committee Asks Limited Pass-Fail System Views Building Plans At its m e e t i n g l a s t M o n d a y n i g h t the S t u d e n t S e n a t e r e f e r r e d a p r o p o s a l a d v o c a t i n g the i n s t i t u t i o n of a limited p a s s - f a i l s y s t e m to the E d u c a t i o n a l Policies C o m mittee.

The pass-fail system, p r o p o s e d b y Pete S m i t h , c o o r d i n a t o r of N a tional Student Assn. on c a m p u s , would allow j u n i o r s a n d seniors to elect o n e p a s s - f a i l c o u r s e p e r semester.

T H E C O U R S E ( O U L D not be a required one a n d would have to fall o u t s i d e the s t u d e n t ' s m a j o r field a n d r e q u i r e d c o u r s e s . T h e student could receive r e g u l a r g r a d e s o n w o r k d u r i n g the s e m e s ter; h o w e v e r , o n l y a p a s s o r fail m a r k w o u l d be g i v e n a s the f i n a l grade.

THE I N T E R E S T from the b o n d w a s u s e d to p u r c h a s e a similar bust a w a r d e d every three y e a r s to the H o p e s t u d e n t delive r i n g the best o r i g i n a l patrioticaddress. The contest was custom a r i l y held o n o r a b o u t F e b . 2 2 a n d in 1 9 3 2 w a s held o n the bicentennial of George Washington's birthday.

The original W a s h i n g t o n bust, n o w r e s i d i n g in the C o l l e g e A r c h ives. w a s c a s t in F r a n c e , u s i n g the sculptor Jean Antoine H o u d o n ' s o r i g i n a l m o l d , it is c o n s i d e r e d to be a perfect r e p r e s e n t a t i o n of Washington.

H o u d o n spent three weeks at Mt. V e r n o n , d u r i n g w h i c h t i m e he l o o k all m e a s u r e m e n t s of W a s h i n g t o n ' s h e a d n e e d e d f o r the b u s t .

Neckers Publishes New Organic Chemistry Text Dr. D o u g l a s C". N e c k e r s of the H o p e College Chemistry Department has published a chemistry t e x t b o o k entitled " M e c h a n i s t i c Organic Photochemistry."

M a n y t i m e s the i n d i v i d u a l is c o m p e l l e d to m i n o r in a school r e q u i r e m e n t , w h i c h he would not ordinarily select, s i m p l y b e c a u s e he h a s n ' t t i m e to fit in the n e c e s s a r y c o u r s e s in a n y o t h e r field.

One p e r s o n w h o h a s t r a n s f e r r e d h a s written to s a y t h a t s h e w a s v e r y i m p r e s s e d b y the a d v i c e a n d v a r i e t y of c o u r s e s a v a i l a b l e at h e r new s c h o o l , m a n y t i m e s the size of H o p e .

H o w e v e r , it is n o t just the r u l e s a p p l y i n g to c a m p u s life t h a t h a v e c o n c e r n e d the t r a n s f e r s , b u t t h o s e w h i c h restrict n o n - c a m p u s life.

O n e s o p h o m o r e girl s t a t e d " Y o u c a n ' t g o to visit a city, y o u h a v e to g o to visit s o m e o n e there. A n d then t h e r e a r e the o r a n g e s h e e t s , the y e l l o w s h e e t s , the white s h e e t s , and the invitation r i g m a r o l e . " T H E THIRD AREA concerns the s o c i a l life at this s c h o o l , o r l a c k of it. Most e v e r y o n e a g r e e d t h a t if y o u a r e g o i n g with s o m e o n e o n c a m p u s , it c o u l d be g r e a t .

However, if y o u a r e m e r e l y s e a r c h i n g a n d h o p i n g -- it's a different s t o r y .

In s e v e r a l d i s c u s s i o n s , t h e r e s e e m e d to be a c o n c e n s u s t h a t bigger towns a n d bigger schools d o h a v e m o r e to offer in the w a y of e v e n t s off a n d o n c a m p u s . A s o p h o m o r e c o m m e n t e d that what the C o l l e g e o f f e r e d w a s excellent but t h a t the t o w n h a d little to offer.

A s o p h o m o r e girl s a i d " I t ' s either the d a t e o r the d o r m a n d the d o r m g e t s p r e t t y t i r i n g . T h e t o w n d o e s n ' t help m a t t e r s e i t h e r . " As a n o t h e r girl q u e r i e d u n b e lievingly " T h e g u y s s a y they can't get d a t e s ? " S e v e r a l g i r l s t r a n s f e r r e d to " b e c l o s e r to s o m e o n e b a c k h o m e . " OTHER REASONS CITED were d i s t a n c e f r o m h o m e , m a r riage, expenses, and uncertainty a b o u t the f u t u r e .

T h o s e w h o d r o p p e d out b e c a u s e of the last r e a s o n stated t h a t t h e y felt t h e y w e r e w a s t i n g t i m e a n d money drifting through school.

T h e y felt t h a t b y w o r k i n g they c o u l d f i n d a m o r e definite interest.

T h e a b o v e f a c t o r s all p l a y e d a p a r t in the d e c i s i o n s of t h o s e w h o left H o p e . H o w e v e r , it w a s not o n e specific r e a s o n b u t a c o m b i n a t i o n of these f a c t o r s t h a t 1 p r o m p t e d the d e c i s i o n s . l t w a s a n i n t e r r e l a t i o n of these r e a s o n s t h a t c a u s e d the i n d i v i d u a l s to re-evalu a t e the s c h o o l a n d t h e i r relat i o n s h i p to it.

T h e a r t i c l e d e a l i n g w i t h t h e acad e m i c s h o w i n g of t h e f r e s h m e n p o i n t s o u t t h a t a g r e a t m a n y of t h e m e n h a v e simply been u n a b l e to cope with the d e m a n d s of t h e i r c o u r s e s . At t h e s a m e t i m e t h e vast m a j o r i t y of the w o m e n h a v e h a d c o m p a r a t i v e l y little t r o u b l e .

P e r f o r m a n c e by t h e m e n is also p o o r e r t h a n t h a t of m a l e f r e s h m e n in t h e past.

Admissions records show that both the m e n a n d w o m e n entered H o p e with the same potential for academic a c h i e v e m e n t . T h e i r r e c o r d s in h i g h school c o m p a r e d f a v o r a b l y to t h o s e of p r e v i o u s classes of m e n . T h e p r o b l e m m u s t lie in w h a t h a p p e n s to t h e m e n a f t e r they a r r i v e a t H o p e .

T h e article a t t r i b u t e s the superiority of t h e p e r f o r m a n c e of t h e wom e n to t h e r e s t r i c t i o n s o n t h e m w h i c h encourage studying. T h e men exhibit a m a r k e d i m m a t u r i t y a n d lack of m o t i v a t i o n in c o m p a r i s o n t o t h e coeds.

T h e o b v i o u s s o l u t i o n to t h e p r o b lem of t h e f r e s h m a n m a l e w o u l d seem to b e t h e e s t a b l i s h m e n t of some f o r m of r e g u l a t i o n s w h i c h w o u l d restrict his h o u r s a n d force h i m t o a d o p t b e t t e r s t u d y h a b i t s . W e feel, h o w e v e r , t h a t this w o u l d b e a b a c k w a r d s t e p at a t i m e w h e n H o p e m u s t c o n t i n u e to m o v e forw a r d in o r d e r to c o m p e t e for s t u d e n t s w i t h o t h e r colleges.

T h e A d m i s s i o n s Office r e p o r t s t h a t m a l e a p p l i c a t i o n s a r e d o w n 10 p e r c e n t f r o m last y e a r ; t h e c r e a t i o n of h o u r s f o r m e n w o u l d h a v e a d i s a s t r o u s effect on t h e a l r e a d y d i m i n i s h i n g n u m b e r of m a l e s t u d e n t s s e e k i n g a n e d u c a t i o n at Hope.

H E A R T I C L E also points out that academic standards have t i g h t e n e d t h i s year, c o n t r i b u t i n g to t h e p o o r p e r f o r m a n c e of f r e s h m e n .

W e feel t h a t this u p g r a d i n g of s t a n d a r d s is h i g h l y b e n e f i c i a l to the school.

A h i g h e r a c a d e m i c s t a n d a r d will attract a h i g h e r c a l i b e r of s t u d e n t .

W h a t t h e n is t h e s o l u t i o n ? T h e s i t u a t i o n is i n t o l e r a b l e as it n o w s t a n d s .

T h e f r e s h m a n m a l e is a n i m m a t u r e i n d i v i d u a l w h o is set loose on his o w n

to p u r s u e his c o u r s e s w i t h l i t t l e or n o s u p e r v i s i o n . M a n y of t h e f r e s h m e n c o u l d n o t h a n d l e this a d j u s t m e n t t o self-discipline w h i c h H o p e College dem a n d s . I n his difficulty, t h e f r e s h m a n f o u n d few w i t h t h e t i m e o r t h e m o t i v a t i o n t o h e l p h i m ; m o s t of t h e f a c u l t y advisors w e r e u n c o n c e r n e d a n d t h e resid e n t a d v i s o r s w e r e t o o busy w i t h o t h e r activities.

T h e selling p o i n t of H o p e C o l l e g e has always b e e n its sense of c o m m u n ity a n d c o n c e r n . T h e f r e s h m e n m e n seem t o h a v e b e e n left t o t h e i r o w n devices o n t h e o u t s i d e of t h i s c o m m u n i t y .

N e x t year t h e C o l l e g e m u s t i m p r o v e its a d v i s i n g system. If t h e w o m e n a r e moved o u t of t h e c o t t a g e s as is p r e s e n t l y p l a n n e d , n e x t year's f r e s h m e n w i t h t h e p o o r e s t p r e p a r a t i o n s h o u l d be p l a c e d in t h e c o t t a g e s w i t h a n R A r e s p o n s i b l e f o r only 10 t o 12 s t u d e n t s . R A ' s s h o u l d only be selected w h o h a v e b o t h t h e a b i l i t y a n d t h e t i m e to serve as effective advisors. As m a n y u p p e r c l a s s m e n as p o s s i b l e s h o u l d b e p l a c e d in Kollen H a l l in o r d e r t o p r o v i d e a s t a b i l i z i n g factor for the f r e s h m e n .

O R T H E P R E S E N T , it is i m p e r a tive to t i g h t e n d i s c i p l i n e in Kollen H a l l . T h e a b s e n t e e i s m of t h e R A ' s h a s c o n t r i b u t e d to f r e s h m e n p r o b lems a n d m u s t cease. P e r h a p s it is necessary to assign m o r e R A ' s to K o l l e n H a l l . At a n y r a t e , d r i n k i n g in t h e r o o m s c a n n o t b e p e r m i t t e d to c o n t i n u e under any conditions. F u r t h e r m o r e , an e x t e n s i v e t u t o r i n g system m u s t be est a b l i s h e d to h e l p t h e m e n w h o h a v e h a d difficulty w i t h g r a d e s .

T h e p e r f o r m a n c e of t h e girls seems to i n d i c a t e t h a t they a r e m a t u r e e n o u g h a n d possess g o o d e n o u g h s t u d y h a b i t s to p e r m i t a r e l a x a t i o n of t h e rules restricting them. I h a d the g o o d f o r t u n e to s p e a k t o a C I A m a n o n a p a r k b e n c h in L a f a y e t t e S q u a r e . I k n e w he w a s a C I A m a n the m i n ute I s a w h i m b e c a u s e he w a s c o u n t i n g o u t $ 1 0 0 , 0 0 0 in c a s h to g i v e to s e v e r a l s t u d e n t s w h o were p i c k e t i n g the White H o u s e to s t o p the b o m b i n g in V i e t n a m .

O n e of the bills blew a w a y , a n d w h e n I r e t r i e v e d it for the a g e n t , he told m e to k e e p it a n d invited m e to sit d o w n .

Students Protest Chapel Talk, Escalate Mice War This M o n d a y Wesley Michaels o n held a chapel talk 'that w a s m o s t d i s a p p o i n t i n g . Wesley t o l d u s t h a t , o n r e q u e s t of the D a n forth f o u n d a t i o n , he interviewed some students from K a l a m a z o o College last weekend.

The students he interviewed were, a c c o r d i n g to h i m , m a r k e d b y a n a t t i t u d e of c y n i c i s m a n d distrust t o w a r d s their a d m i n i s t r a t i o n a n d t h e i r c o l l e g e . Wesley rem a r k e d t h a t , a l t h o u g h the K a l a m a z o o s t u d e n t s h a d m o r e freed o m t h a n H o p e students, they felt r e s t r i c t e d a n d c o n f i n e d b y their c o l l e g e .

I C O N T E N D T H A T Hope Col lege, in its b l i n d a d h e r e n c e to these y e a r l y r i t u a l s , is s u f f e r i n g f r o m a f a m i n e in a m e a n i n g f u l c l i m a t e .

T o r e s c u e the c o l l e g e f r o m this b l i g h t , we m u s t e v a l u a t e t h o s e activities w h i c h s e r v e little p u r p o s e in p r o p o r t i o n to the time t h e y d e m a n d . And no church sustained comm i t m e n t s t h e n . His c h u r c h t a l k e d w a r , b u t M u s t e t a l k e d p e a c e . His c h u r c h i n v o k e d the e a s y s a n c t i ties of n a t i o n h o o d ; M u s t e w r e s tled t o w a r d a h i g h e r r i g h t . T h e church's magic word was "patriotism;" Muste's magic word w a s " l o v e . " With his c h u r c h a b s o r b e d in its t h e o l o g i e s , M u s t e l i v e d b y a c t i o n . W h e n his c h u r c h s o l d o u t f o r p u b l i c respect, M u s t e d r e a m e d o n l y of r a d i c a l justice.

RANK IN CLASS breakdowns s h o w t h a t 9 0 p e r cent of the w o m e n w e r e in the t o p two fifths of their c l a s s a s o p p o s e d to 7 5 p e r cent of the m e n . While this indicates a slight edge among t h e w o m e n in p a s t p e r f o r m a n c e , it d o e s not e x p l a i n the d i s c r e p a n c y f o u n d in the p r e s e n t s i t u a t i o n w h i c h f i n d s 16 f r e s h m e n ineligible in o n e w i n g of K o l l e n Hall while t h e f r e s h m e n w o m e n of V a n Vleck H a h a v e r a g e d o v e r 2.9.

T h e s i t u a t i o n c a n n o t be exp l a i n e d t h r o u g h a n a n a l y s i s of a p p l i c a t i o n s either. Resident A d v i s o r B o b T h o m p s o n s u m m e d it u p a s a " l a c k of s e l f - d i s c i p l i n e " a m o n g the f r e s h m e n . He s a i d t h a t the freshmen "don't know how to s t u d y . " S e n i o r RA Wes M i c h a e l s o n noted t h a t the f r o s h m e n h a v e not r e a c h e d the s a m e level of m a t u r ity a s t h e w o m e n . D e a n of Academic Affairs William M a t h i s c o n c u r r e d with h i m a n d n o t e d the i r o n y in the fact t h a t H o p e i m p o s e s restrictions on f r e s h m a n coeds while a l l o w i n g complete f r e e d o m to the m o r e i m m a t u r e f r e s h m e n men.

Most of the f r o s h m e n a t t r i b u t e d t h e d i s p a r i t y b e t w e e n g r a d e s of m e n a n d w o m e n to the rules imp o s e d o n the w o m e n . " T h e y h a d to be in the d o r m at 10 p . m . d u r i n g the week a n d w e r e s u p p o s e d to h a v e l i g h t s out at 1 1 p . m . , " o n e f r e s h r r t a n with a 1.8 g r a d e point noted. " T h e y knew t h e y h a d to get t h e i r w o r k d o n e a n d d i d n ' t h a v e t i m e to p r o c r a s t i n a t e , " he a d d e d .

I T IS A C O M M O N o c c u r e n c e to h a v e f r e s h m e n in K o l l e n s t a y i n g u p to two a n d t h r e e in the

m o r n i n g playing cards or records o r j u s t t a l k i n g , a c c o r d i n g to the RA's. In the w o r d s of o n e ineligible, " W e j u s t g o o f e d off l a s t s e m e s t e r a n d n o w we h a v e to p a y f o r it." T h o m p s o n p o i n t e d o u t the f r e e d o m the f r e s h m e n h a d : " W e g a v e them e n o u g h rope, a n d they s e e m to h a v e h u n g t h e m s e l v e s . " A m o r e subtle p r o b l e m often c a m e u p w h e n f r e s h m e n were interviewed. M a n y expressed an "1 don't c a r e " attitude. Others noted t h a t t h e y f o u n d it difficult to a d j u s t to c o l l e g e life. T h e y s e e m e d u n a b l e to a c c e p t the r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s of r u n n i n g t h e i r o w n lives.

M i c h a e l s o n n o t e d t h a t " a lot don't k n o w what they're doing here. T h e y d o n ' t t a k e a c a d e m i c interests seriously."

RA .lim S c h o o n c a l l e d it " a l i e n a t i o n " f r o m the l i f e o f H o p e C o l l e g e . T h o m p s o n s a i d t h a t these s t u d e n t s w h o were " l o s t " t e n d e d to " b l e n d t h e m selves i n t o a f r a t e r n i t y - t y p e a t m o s p h e r e , " b e c o m e i n v o l v e d in timew a s t i n g activity, a n d collectively i g n o r e their studies.

T H R E E I N E L I G I B L E fresh men labeled themselves as a " n e w b r e e d " of s t u d e n t at H o p e . " A lot of u s d i d n ' t k n o w the b a c k g r o u n d of either the s c h o o l o r the t o w n , " o n e said. They were disapp o i n t e d in the s o c i a l life a v a i l a b l e a n d s a i d it c o n t r i b u t e d to a " g e n e r a l l a c k of interest in the p l a c e . " RA Dick Shiels detected a " d i f ferent a t t i t u d e " a m o n g this y e a r ' s freshmen t h a n he h a d n o t e d before; " f r e s h m e n h a v e a l w a y s s t a r t e d s c a r e d " in the I n t r o d u c tion to L i b e r a l S t u d i e s c o u r s e ( f o r w h i c h he is a d i s c u s s i o n l e a d e r ) , b u t " n o t this y e a r . " " T h e y d o n ' t seem to be g e t t i n g a s i n v o l v e d in the c o u r s e a s t h e y used t o , " he a d d e d . M i c h a e l s o n p o i n t e d to a " l a c k of i n t e r e s t " in m a n y of the f r e s h m a n c o u r s e s a n d s a i d t h a t m a n y f r e s h m e n s e e m e d to resent h a v i n g to t a k e " s o m a n y required courses."

This attitude a m o n g f r e s h m e n , " he c o n t i n u e d , is a l s o " r e f l e c t e d in the n u m b e r of c h a p e l c u t s a m o n g m e n . " T a l k i n g with t h o s e w h o h a d gotten low g r a d e points, indicated t h a t the s a m e s t u d e n t s w h o w e r e getting low g r a d e s u s u a l l y cons i d e r e d g o i n g to c h a p e l a " c h o r e . "

T h e r e s i d e n t a d v i s o r s of the m e n t h i s y e a r a r e a m o n g bestk n o w n , m o s t liked a n d m o s t a c t i v e m e n o n c a m p u s . T h e y w e r e selected o n the b a s i s of t h e s e q u a l i f i c a t i o n s . In a d d i t i o n to t h e i r res p o n s i b i l i t e s to a s m a n y a s 5 9 m e n in a w i n g , t h e y f i n d themselves c o m m i t t e d to e x p e n d i n g h u g e a m o u n t s of t i m e in s u c h activities a s s t u d e n t g o v e r n m e n t , student c o u r t , v a r s i t y s p o r t s a n d f r a t e r n i t y l e a d e r s h i p a s well a s tryi n g to k e e p u p with t h e i r c o u r s e s .

FINAL EXAMS—Students labor over a final e x a m , but this year freshmen men did poorly as 40 percent of their number failed to achieve a two-point ^rade point average.

It w a s the u n a n i m o u s o p i n i o n of all s t u d e n t s q u e s t i o n e d , w h e ther they w e r e u p p e r c l a s s m e n o r f r e s h m e n , t h a t the s c h o o l h a d bec o m e h a r d e r a c a d e m i c a l l y this year and was more d e m a n d i n g in a l m o s t e v e r y a r e a . M o s t of the upperclassmen who had contact with f r e s h m a n c o u r s e s b y b e i n g lab assistants or discussion g r o u p l e a d e r s s e e m e d to feel t h a t the f r e s h m e n w e r e b e i n g " r e q u i r e d to p r o d u c e m o r e " a n d were b e i n g marked " m o r e severely." One question which c a m e up time a n d time a g a i n w a s the prob l e m of d i s c i p l i n e a n d o r d e r in the w i n g s of K o l l e n H a l l . O n e s t u d e n t with a l o w g r a d e p o i n t said that there w a s a g r e a t deal of r u l e b r e a k i n g in K o l l e n this y e a r , m o s t of it g o i n g o n w i t h o u t t h e k n o w l e d g e of the RA's. O n e f o r m this t a k e s is, of c o u r s e , drinking.

J I M K L E I N . chief j u s t i c e of the s t u d e n t c o u r t , s a i d t h a t the c o u r t h a d c o n s i d e r e d 15 c a s e s i n v o l v i n g d r i n k i n g the first s e m e s t e r , m o r e t h a n the e n t i r e t y of l a s t y e a r . Seven f r e s h m e n w e r e i n v o l v e d in these cases. T h e f r e s h m e n interviewed, h o w e v e r , said that there were m a n y more students drinking t h a n t h o s e w h o h a d been c a u g h t .

The general attitude was, howe v e r , t h a t the d r i n k i n g w a s a s y m p t o m of the g e n e r a l i m m a t u r ity a n d l a c k of d i r e c t i o n a m o n g the f r e s h m e n a n d not a direct c a u s e of t h e i r p o o r academicshowing.

ALTHOUGH SENIOR RA D a v e V a n d e r w e l t h a t t h a t he w a s

C O N S E Q U E N T L Y , they are u n a b l e to d e v o t e a s m u c h time to their w i n g s a s t h e y h a d w i s h e d they c o u l d . T h o m p s o n s a i d t h a t he h a d b e e n f o r c e d to a s k m e n in his w i n g to l e a v e his r o o m in o r d e r to get s o m e s t u d y i n g d o n e .

Interviews with freshmen b r o u g h t o u t the fact t h a t t h e m e n w h o h a d b e e n in t r o u b l e with g r a d e s at m i d - s e m e s t e r received little p r o m p t i n g a n d e n c o u r a g e m e n t f r o m either t h e i r f a c u l t y a d v i s o r s o r r e s i d e n t a d v i s o r s . While s e v e r a l s t u d e n t s s a i d t h a t their faculty m e m b e r s exhibited great c o n c e r n f o r their p r o b l e m s , the m a j o r i t y of s t u d e n t s q u e s t i o n e d said that their a d v i s o r s h a d m a d e n o a t t e m p t to c o n t a c t t h e m a f t e r a poor midsemester showing.

O N E S T U D E N T d e s c r i b e d his a d v i s o r a s " a g u y to s i g n y o u r schedule a n d that's it." Chuck Cizek, a s o p h o m o r e t r a n s f e r f r o m the I ' n i v e r s i t y of I o w a , s a i d t h a t e v e n t h e s o - c a l l e d i m p e r s o n a l state school exhibited " m o r e concern for the student t h a n y o u h a v e here." Dean Mathis places much of the b l a m e f o r the p o o r s h o w i n g of the f r e s h m e n m e n o n t h e i n a d e q u a c y of H o p e ' s a d v i s i n g set-up.

In brief, the p r o b l e m is r o o t e d in a c o m b i n a t i o n of m a l e f r e s h m a n i m m a t u r i t y , a l a c k of motiv a t i o n , a l a c k of d i s c i p l i n e in Kollen Hall, a general tightening of a c a d e m i c s t a n d a r d s , a n d the f a i l u r e of the s c h o o l to p r o v i d e the f r e s h m e n with a n a d e q u a t e a d v i s i n g s e r v i c e , e i t h e r b y RA's or by faculty.

T H E S U P E R I O R I T Y of the fem a l e s t u d e n t c a n be a t t r i b u t e d , not to a n y a d v a n t a g e in intellig e n c e o r p r e p a r a t i o n , b u t to the restrictions imposed o n them. The p a r a d o x lies in the fact t h a t the r e s t r i c t i o n s a p p l y to t h e f r e s h m e n c o e d s w h e n it is t h e i r m a l e c o u n t e r p a r t s w h o need it the m o s t .
