Want New AWS Regulations By P a t C a n f i e l d "We are meeting tonight for a r e a s o n : we a r e d i s t u r b e d with the p e t t i n e s s of the r u l e s t h a t restrict the w o m e n o n H o p e ' s c a m p u s . Do we a d v o c a t e e l i m i n a t i n g all r u l e s a q d h a v i n g c o m p l e t e a n a r c h y ? Of c o u r s e n o t . " W I T H T H I S S T A T E M E N T of p u r p o s e in f r o n t of t h e m , s o m e 5 0 g i r l s met W e d n e s d a y n i g h t to d i s c u s s w a y s in w h i c h A W S c o u l d b e c o m e m o r e r e l e v a n t d i r e c t l y rel a t e d to the p r o b l e m s a n d n e e d s of H o p e w o m e n . The statement further said, " There are certain basic laws that m u s t b i n d m a n k i n d . We s h o u l d s t r e s s t h a t it isn't the b i g r u l e s t h a t stifle us, it is the c r e e p i n g little o n e s . L a w s t h a t h a v e a b a s e are necessary. " A n d t h a t is h o w we s e p a r a t e the i m p o r t a n t o n e s f r o m the triv i a , b y a s k i n g the q u e s t i o n : W h a t is the l o g i c a l f o u n d a t i o n of this rule. Barb Timmer and Jan Sebens, a s c o - c h a i r m e n of t h e m e e t i n g , s u g g e s t e d t h a t c o m m i t t e e s be o r g a n i z e d to d r a f t a g e n e r a l p r o p o s a l of c h a n g e s w h i c h w o u l d b e p r e s e n t e d to AWS f o r c o n s i d e r a tion. C o m m i t t e e s u n d e r t h e h e a d i n g s of t h e H a n d b o o k , A W S officers, d o r m r e g u l a t i o n s , a n d o t h e r regulations, (which included subc o m m i t t e e s o n h o u r s , e a t i n g off c a m p u s , dress, permissions and s m o k i n g ) , w e r e set u p .

O N E G I R L WAS a p p o i n t e d chairman of e a c h c o m m i t t e e , w h i c h will meet to d i s c u s s specificp r o b l e m s . C o m m i t t e e results will be r e p o r t e d at a g e n e r a l m e e t i n g next W e d n e s d a y n i g h t . These res u l t s will be i n c o r p o r a t e d i n t o the final p r o p o s a l p r e s e n t e d to AWS. Miss T i m m e r e m p h a s i z e d t h a t the k e y to these m e e t i n g s a n d s u b sequent proposal was organization. "We can't d o a n y t h i n g by a little o u t b r e a k h e r e o r a little sneak p l a y there," she comm e n t e d . Miss S e b e n s a n d Miss T i m m e r expressed their intention of v i s i t i n g Mrs. Isla V a n Kenen a a m , Dean of W o m e n , to e x p l a i n the g r o u p ' s g o a l . Several students voiced displeas u r e with the w a y AWS r e p r e s e n t a tives w e r e elected. " W e were g i v e n a list of n a m e s at a d o r m m e e t i n g a n d w e r e told o u r A W S r e p r e s e n t a t i v e w o u l d be d e c i d e d b y a n

o n - t h e - s p o t v o t e . We h a d n o p a r t in d e c i d i n g the n o m i n a t i o n s . " O n e girl stated that such n o m i n a t i o n s w e r e d e c i d e d b y the h o u s e m o t h e r a n d the RAs. M A N Y G I R L S W E R E concerned a b o u t the f a c t t h a t A W S r u l e a n d p o l i c y c h a n g e s w e r e not k n o w n a b o u t until a f t e r t h e y h a d been p u t into effect. " W e k n o w n o t h i n g a b o u t the origin or content of the o r i g i n a l p r o p o s a l s , " o n e girl c o m p l a i n e d . A m e m b e r of the AWS c o u n c i l p r e s e n t at the meeting, said that there w a s no reason for such u n a w a r e n e s s as all AWS m e e t i n g s were o p e n . It w a s t h e n s u g g e s t e d t h a t a g r o u p of w o m e n a t t e n d t h e next meeting on T u e s d a y .
