Dean's List Achieved by 496 Students T h e D e a n ' s List of s t u d e n t s in high academic standing h a s been a n n o u n c e d this past week. F o u r hundred-ninety-six s t u d e n t s attained the h o n o r for the fall semester.

In o r d e r to be p l a c e d o n the D e a n ' s List, a s t u d e n t m u s t c a r r y a 1 2 - h o u r subject l o a d , a n d h a v e a g r a d e point a v e r a g e of 3.0.

S e n i o r s d o m i n a t e d the list with 4 5 per cent of the s e n i o r c l a s s m a i n t a i n i n g a 3.0. T h e j u n i o r s listed 3 5 per cent of their c l a s s , s o p h o m o r e s rated 2 5 percent, a n d the f r e s h m e n placed 2 1 per cent of their s t u d e n t s o n the list. A p p r o x i m a t e l y 3 0 per cent of the c a m p u s a t t a i n e d a B a v e r a g e , with w o m e n o u t n u m b e r i n g m e n b y a significant margin.

We h a v e waited o n e h u n d r e d y e a r s f o r a law to m a k e l y n c h i n g illegal. T h e white s y s t e m p u t s m o r e v a l u e o n two pieces of c a r d b o a r d t h a n o n m y m o t h e r ' s life -- A n d we a r e g o i n g to t a k e this c o u n t r y apart, house by house, brick b y brick!"

Chapel Problem Has Long History

A 1912 a n c h o r article s t a t e d , " A l t h o u g h a t t e n d a n c e is not c o m p u l s o r y , n e v e r t h e l e s s the s t u d e n t s a r e e a r n e s t l y u r g e d to c o m e . " T h e article f u r t h e r stated t h a t since " s o m e students a p p e a r occasiona l l y , " it is t h e n the r e s p o n s i b i l i t y of the students " t o d o all in their p o w e r to s t i m u l a t e a n interest in chapel a n d set a n e x a m p l e . " M I S S J A N E T B. M u l d e r of the L i b r a r y A r c h i v e s D e p a r t m e n t noted that, a c c o r d i n g to the 1 8 8 4 - 8 5 College C a t a l o g , a n e x c u s e f r o m the President w a s needed if a student c o u l d not a t t e n d S u n d a y w o r s h i p services. E a c h s t u d e n t at t h a t time w a s expected to attend m o r n ing c h a p e l e a c h m o r n i n g in a d d i tion to S u n d a y w o r s h i p services.

An a n c h o r e d i t o r i a l , d a t e d Oct. 2 0 , 1 9 1 5 , s t r e s s e d the two v a l u e s of d a i l y c h a p e l w o r s h i p : the relig i o u s v a l u e a n d the social v a l u e .

The editorial stated, " t h e r e l i g i o u s v a l u e is h a r d l y a p p r e c i a t e d to the J u l l extent b y u s s t u d e n t s . " It continued that H o p e should be p r o f o u n d l y g r a t e f u l t h a t it is a

" C h r i s t i a n college, that it h a s in its f a c u l t y m e n of s t r o n g a n d c o n s t a n t p r i n c i p l e s , a n d t h a t the exercises of e a c h d a y a r e b e g u n b y a sincere d e v o t i o n a l s e r v i c e . " A N O T H E R V A L U E OF daily c h a p e l w o r s h i p w a s social, it continued. Reaction Varied

Faculty Considers Trimester

By Ken Nienhuis anchor Reporter D u r i n g t h e c o u r s e of t h e p a s t several y e a r s m a n y colleges a n d universities t h r o u g h o u t the United S t a t e s h a v e a b a n d o n e d t h e traditional two semester academic y e a r i n f a v o r of a q u a r t e r s y s t e m , t r i m e s t e r , o r o t h e r t y p e s of college calendars. Although opinions are varied, several Hope College faculty m e m b e r s h a v e indicated t h e y w o u l d f a v o r a c h a n g e in Hope's calendar.

O n e of t h e chief c r i t i c i s m s of the t w o s e m e s t e r s y s t e m is t h a t t h e vacations are inconveniently s p a c e d . T h e C h r i s t m a s b r e a k usu a l l y f a l l s a b o u t t h r e e w e e k s bef o r e f ir st s e m e s t e r f i n a l e x a m s .

D R . D A V I D M A R K E R of t h e p h y s i c s d e p a r t m e n t s a i d t h a t these weeks are characterized by a "lack of i n e r t i a . " B y the t i m e s t u d e n t s a n d f a c u l t y h a v e r e a d j u s t e d to a c a d e m i c life, e x a m s a r e g i v e n .

After e x a m s , a n o t h e r short b r e a k o c c u r s . Dr. M a r k e r s a i d t h a t he p e r s o n a l l y felt t h a t it w o u l d be d e s i r a b l e to " q u i t f o r C h r i s t m a s a n d be d o n e . " T h i s o p i n i o n is s h a r e d b y m a n y other faculty members.

H o w e v e r , Dr. M a r k e r said that the present s y s t e m s h o u l d be m a i n t a i n e d if s t u d e n t s w h o h a v e e x t e n sive l o n g - r a n g e a s s i g n m e n t s or t e r m p a p e r s feel the v a c a t i o n is n e c e s s a r y to c o m p l e t e their w o r k .

In a d d i t i o n , Acting D e a n for A c a d e m i c Affairs William V a n d e r L u g t said the C h r i s t m a s b r e a k presently gives students a chance to c r y s t a l l i z e t h e i r t h i n k i n g in all courses.

A N O T H E R COMPLAINT about t h e t r a d i t i o n a l s y s t e m is t h a t students take t o o m a n y different c o u r s e s at t h e s a m e time. Dr. J o h n H o l l e n b a c h , c h a i r m a n of t h e E n g l i s h d e p a r t m e n t , s a i d t h a t he felt that t a k i n g "six or seven courses was too much fractioning."

A possible s o l u t i o n to this p r o b l e m is the " t h r e e b y t h r e e " p r o g r a m w h i c h will be put i n t o effect a t C e n t r a l C o l l e g e n e x t y e a r .

U n d e r this p r o g r a m , c o n s i s t i n g of t h r e e t e n o r e l e v e n w e e k t e r m s , s t u d e n t s w o u l d b e a l l o w e d to c o n centrate m o r e o n their courses.

H O W E V E R , DR. M a r k e r point

e d o u t t h a t in s o m e c o u r s e s it is a d v i s a b l e to h a v e a l o n g e r p e r i o d of t i m e t o a l l o w m o r e o p p o r t u n i t y f o r m a t e r i a l to s o a k in and "digest."

F e w faculty m e m b e r s seem to f a v o r a strict t r i m e s t e r p r o g r a m , in w h i c h t h e e n t i r e c a l e n d a r y e a r w o u l d be divided into three traditional length semesters.

Difficulties a r e f o r e s e e n in att r a c t i n g e n o u g h s t u d e n t s or fac u l t y t o m a k e the s u m m e r s e s s i o n w o r t h w h i l e . I n a d d i t i o n , with t h e winter-spring semester e n d i n g b y M a y 1, t h e s p r i n g s p o r t s p r o g r a m m i g h t b e c u r t a i l e d o r e v e n eliminated.

M O R E E N T H U S I A S M is g e n e r a t e d b y t h e p o s s i b i l i t y of " f o u r o n e - f o u r " p r o g r a m , such a s the o n e a d o p t e d by C a l v i n this y e a r .

I n t h i s t y p e of p r o g r a m the f i r s t s e m e s t e r b e g i n s in e a r l y S e p t e m b e r a n d e n d s at C h r i s t m a s . A student concentrates o n only four •courses d u r i n g this term, which should be only slightly shorter t h a n the p r e s e n t H o p e s e m e s t e r .

After Christmas b r e a k , one m o n t h is d e v o t e d t o c o n c e n t r a t e d s t u d y o n o n e p r o j e c t . D u r i n g the second full semester students a g a i n take four subjects. The a c a d e m i c y e a r e n d s at a p p r o x i m a t e l y the s a m e t i m e a s the present one.

The one month concentrated s t u d y period offers m a n y possibilities f o r creative e d u c a t i o n a l p r o j e c t s . Dr. P a u l F r i e d , H o p e ' s D i r e c t o r of I n t e r n a t i o n a l E d u c a tion and history depcutmentchaira n , s a i d t h a t g r o u p s of s t u d e n t s c o u l d c o n c e i v a b l y e n g a g e in a meaningful foreign experience d u r i n g t h i s time. B y a l s o m a k i n g u s e of C h r i s t m a s v a c a t i o n , a t o t a l of u p to six w e e k s c o u l d be spent overseas.

S T U D E N T S W O U L D be a b l e t o t a k e a d v a n t a g e of w i n t e r r a t e s a n d w o u l d n o t h a v e to g i v e u p a s u m m e r ' s e a r n i n g s to p a r t i c i p a t e in a f o r e i g n e x p e r i e n c e .

A c c o r d i n g to R o b e r t Cecil of the music d e p a r t m e n t , a G L C A p r o p o s a l now under consideration, which would provide for s e m e s t e r s t u d y in N e w Y o r k , c o u l d a l s o be modified to m a k e a f o u r week s t a y possible.

B u t he d i d s a y that one m o n t h might be better t h a n n o t h i n g .

I N A D D I T I O N , Coach Russ De Vette, of t h e p h y s i c a l e d u c a tion d e p a r t m e n t , indicated that if a c h a n g e in t h e c a l e n d a r w e r e to be m a d e , the f o u r - o n e - f o u r w o u l d p r o b a b l y least interlere with t h e i n t e r c o l l e g i a t e a t h l e t i c program.

W h i l e the o n e m o n t h p e r i o d off e r s m a n y p o s s i b i l i t i e s , it c o u l d also provide m a n y problems. The g r e a t e s t of t h e s e , a c c o r d i n g t o Dr. F r i e d , is i n s u r i n g t h a t e d u c a t i o n really takes place. The present domestic and foreign crises facing the United States represent the greatest challenge to A m e r i c a n stability a n d progress since the Civil War. Embroiled in a seemingly endless bloodbath on the Asian continent and facing the possibility of a c o m p a r a b l e t r a g e d y in its own cities within die next ten years, America must rely on the leadership of one ol the most u n p o p u l a r Chief Executives ot its history.

IVING IN such cataclysmic times, there is a g r e a t temptation tor every individual to withdraw intotheshell ot his own little world of self-esteem and private concern. "Let s o m e b o d y else w o r r y a b o u t it,' 1 is the cry. " T i n too b u s y . " This lack ot concern Ls a c o m m o n m a l a d y a m o n g the students ot H o p e College.- There is a g r e a t tendency here to m a k e college a tour-year escape trom the realities of society a n d confine one's thought and concern within a selfish litde cocoon bordered by 8th Street and River Avenue.

The a v e r a g e H o p e student's interests are generally limited to course w o r k , d a t i n g and traternities or sororities. He would rather throw a snowball t h a n read a newspaper.

The Seedling By

In a l a n d w h i c h is s o f a r a w a y that it s e e m s to exist o n l y in d r e a m s , t h e r e w a s a g r o v e of tall, s t a t e l y trees. It w a s a sec l u d e d p l a c e w h i c h h a d never witnessed a d i s t u r b a n c e . In the m i d d l e of this g r o v e , b e n e a t h a l a y e r of rich soil, l a y a s m a l l seed i m p l a n t e d t h e r e b y a w h i m of n a t u r e .

T H I S S E E D was untouched and u n s e e n b y a n y l i v i n g t h i n g . It s l o w l y g a t h e r e d s t r e n g t h f r o m the e a r t h which c r a d l e d it. When its needs d e m a n d e d m o r e nourishm e n t , it p a s s e d a l o n g r o o t d e e p into the soil.

I n e v i t a b l y , the seed b e g a n to d e v e l o p . It w a s a p r o c e s s of m i n ute changes which always d e m a n d e d m o r e of its e n v i r o n m e n t . T h e o n e r o o t b e g a n to s e n d o u t m a n y l i n y b r a n c h e s which d r e w u p o n the u n u s e d r e s o u r c e s w h i c h s u r r o u n d e d it.

As time p a s s e d , the little seed b e g a n t o e x t e n d itself u p w a r d s t r y i n g to b r e a k o u t of its d a r k existence. A l m o s t i m p e r c e p t i b l y , it e d g e d t o w a r d the s u r f a c e until it finally e m e r g e d into the q u i e t of the g r o v e .

F O R T U N A T E L Y , T H E light w h i c h the t o w e r i n g trees a l l o w e d to p e n t r a t e their l i m b s w a s sufficient f o r the little seed ( n o w r i g h t ly called a s e e d l i n g ) to c o n t i n u e its g r o w t h . C o m p a r e d w i t h i t s e a r lier p r o g r e s s , the s e e d l i n g practic a l l y e x p l o d e d into the m i d d l e of the g r o v e . D r a w i n g s u s t e n a n c e f r o m the soil a n d e n e r g y f r o m

the s u n l i g h t , it r a p i d l y d e v e l o p e d into a f l o w e r .

T h i s d e v e l o p m e n t did n o t e s c a p e the notice of the trees. T h e y w e r e very surprised (or maybe s h o c k e d ) to see w h a t w a s h a p p e n ing in their g r o v e . A g a i n s t a b a c k g r o u n d of b l a c k d e c a y i n g l e a v e s , the ancient o n e s noticed the e m e r gence of the g r e e n s e e d l i n g w h i c h d i s t u r b e d the u n i f o r m i t y of their world.

AS T H E S E E D L I N G r e a c h e d maturity a n d became a flower, the trees' s u r p r i s e e a s i l y d e v e l o p ed into a n g e r . T h e y felt t h a t the flower h a d n o r i g h t to i n t r u d e u p o n their w o r l d a n d try to e s t a blish a p o s i t i o n there. It did not m a t t e r t h a t the flower was m e r e l y a p r o d u c t of n a t u r e a s they were.

They would abide nothing that i n t i m a t e d t h a t t h e r e w a s a n y existence o u t s i d e of their o w n .

The flower now became a constant s o u r c e of i r r i t a t i o n to the trees. It f l o u r i s h e d in their m i d s t , growing straight and unfolding itself to r e v e a l b e a u t i f u l white petals tinted red at the e d g e s . It w a s t o o m u c h of a c o n t r a s t , a n d the trees tried to s p r e a d their l e a v e s to e l i m i n a t e the light a n d t h e r e b y d e s t r o y the f l o w e r . H o w e v e r , their a t t e m p t s to rid the g r o v e of the flower were futile f o r the f l o w e r h a d n o d e s i r e to r e l i n q u i s h its position.

O N E DAY, T H E trees' p r a y e r s were a n s w e r e d . A m a n , lost a n d o b v i o u s l y b l i n d , c r a w l e d into the g r o v e o n h i s h a n d s a n d knees.

T h e c a p t u r e of the palace s e e m e d to s i g n a l the coll a p s e of h e a v y e n e m y resistance in the 2 4 - d a y b a t t l e f o r the city.

As the w a r c o n t i n u e s in Vietn a m , the g o v e r n m e n t in neighb o r i n g L a o s is p o n d e r i n g the m e a n i n g of new C o m m u n i s t m i l i t a n c y in this l a n d l o c k e d k i n g d o m . In the p a s t few weeks, units of the C o m m u n i s t Pathet L a o , a u g m e n t e d b y N o r t h Vietnamese troops, have moved a g g r e s s i v e l y o n a n u m b e r of p o s t s a n d t o w n s held b y the g o v e r n m e n t . A l t h o u g h there has been a routine, seasonal Pathet L a o o f f e n s i v e , this y e a r s action h a s given a m u c h s h a r p er e d g e to the C o m m u n i s t t h r u s t s . R e p o r t e d l y , the s o u t h e r n t o w n of S a r a v e n e h a s sustained m o r t a r a n d small a r m s fire, a n d it is felt that if the C o m m u n i s t s s h o u l d seize S a r a vene, this w o u l d d i s r u p t the delicate a r r a n g e m e n t b y which w a r in L a o s h a s been k e p t in low key.

o t i a n f o r c e s f i g h t i n g N o r t h Vietnamese and Laotian communists s e e k i n g to' e x p a n d their b a s e s f o r i n f i l t r a t i o n of S o u t h V i e t n a m . T h i s is the first time the U.S. h a s g i v e n direct a i r s u p p o r t to f o r c e s of n e u t r a l i s t but pro-western L a o s .

Washington In a n u n e x p e c t e d m o v e , Michigan Governor George Romney w i t h d r e w f r o m the r a c e for the Republican presidential nomin a t i o n . In a n a n n o u n c e m e n t to the N a t i o n a l G o v e r n o r ' s C o n f e r e n c e , R o m n e y said the f a i l u r e of his c a n d i d a c y to gather nationwide appreciable s u p p o r t p r o m p t e d h i m to m a k e this m o v e , which o p e n s the w a y for a c t i o n f r o m the R e p u b l i c a n G o v e r n o r s in s u p p o r t of s o m e m o d e r a t e R e p u b l i c a n . " T h i s is not m y last p r e s s c o n f e r e n c e , " a n s w e r e d m a n y q u e s t i o n s a s to Mr. R o m n e y ' s f u t u r e role in politics 19G8. N o t b e i n g a b l e to see the b e a u t y of its petals, he tossed the flower to o n e side a n d c o n t i n u e d o n his way.

T h e flower did not l o n g k e e p its b e a u t y . T h e trees s h o o k their l i m b s with j o y a s the c o l o r s left the petals, a n d the stem t u r n e d to b r o w n . In a few d a y s , the flower h a d a s s u m e d the s a m e c o l o r s as the l e a v e s u p o n which it l a y .

T h e r e w a s n o t h i n g in the g r o v e which m o u r n e d the d e a t h of the flower. F i n a l l y , e v e r y t h i n g w a s the w a y it h a d been, a n d all w a s good.
